REVIEWS OF Halifax Citadel National Historic Site IN Dalhousie

Escobaria Gracilis

Nice historic place to visit and learn about the history of Halifax. Did not have great views because of the fog rolling in.

Vishnu Krishnakumar

A really good view of the city Halifax from the top both day and night!

Krystal Mccoy

Beautiful. Hard to walk up the hill if you're out of shape like me, but WELL worth the journey. Great guided tour and some very cool activities.

Alex TenWesteneind

Show up well before the gun fires at noon! This is a great historic site. All the re-enactors are friendly and helpful. Museum has awesome exhibits and displays. Truly a great historic site with great views of the harbor.

Scott Hayward

We had a great guide for the tour and were there for the noon firing of the cannon. If you are visiting Halifax you must check out the Citadel.

Lindsay Carter

Always a reenactment going on to catch your attention. Very friendly staff, ready to give tours in french or english included in your price. They are also walking around asking if you have questions.

Bubby Adams

Long walk from the pier, but great exercise, kept up nicely and great that children are free

Ellen MacDonald

An awesome place to walk in the city of Halifax. The rolling hills within the hill offers a great place for jogging and walking. The fortress itself is rich in history and worth a look especially if you are looking to learn more about our military and numerous missions. Watch out for the noon gun. It can give tourists a fright. At one time, the fortress on the hill protected the city, now the city protects the hill.

Jim Mangione

Awesome history lessons; historical items were plentiful and the stories told by the actors in period costumes were right on. Don’t miss this!

Richard Oxlade

Great little piece of history, the staff are all knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions about the site. It’s a great value for the price of admission and a fun way to spend an hour or two.

Ashleigh Woodward

We had a great visit here, having driven around it but never been inside. We found it helpful to be there for when it opened at 10 am, as we didn't have any concerns about parking, waiting in line, crowding, etc. Recommend visiting during good weather if possible. Our tour guide was a knowledgeable University student who went out of her way to answer our questions during our free 20-minute tour (offered in both English and French). Beautiful views from the ramparts, and a very safe-feeling excursion during Covid times as most visitors followed the protocol of masks on when indoors. The museum on the second floor was really interesting and full of treasures that you might not see elsewhere (Roman sword, Victoria Crosses). Staff were friendly and knowledgeable, definitely worth checking out when you are in Halifax!

The tour is great, the guide are knowledgeable. After the tour I have a deeper knowledge of the history of novascotia. Also they have a great view of the city

Kapil Bhalla

Historic site with a significance. You can see real fire shots.

Jarrod Kailef

This was a ton of fun, and the reenactments handled by the dedicated staff are really impressive. There's a lot to learn here, it's a legitimate piece of Halifax history that you shouldn't miss if you are visiting this great city.

Mike Diehn

Very, very well maintained citadel with excellent exhibits and reenactments and displays.

Mohawks and Tomahawks

It's a Star Fort! With canons! That will shake you to the core everyday at noon. What more do you want? Military Uniforms? Actors? Sure they've got that too! It's a great piece of NS History to be sure. 20 years ago, it was more impressive than it's current set up, but still a great afternoon to be had here. I visit every time I come to Halifax, and I'm sure I'll continue to do so.

sandeep pundari

Fantastic view of the Halifax harbour from all sides. One should not miss the Canon drill on the Citadel

Karem Gonzalez

It's a very interesting place to visit, everyone is dress depending on his roll in the Citadel. I was very happy because they know their history. I was able to talk with the teacher of the school, a soldier and a nurse (she looked like an angel). I was specially impressed by the man in the picture (He was a military) who was explaining the strategy used in war. The way he talks about the history make it feel like a story.

Alaa Benhammida

Very interesting site and lovely service by the student interns that teChed us so much abiut the history of the region.

Farid Yaghoubi

We had a great time wondering through the life of a royal artillery soldier around 1837

Anne Duncan

Very interesting place to visit. Would recommend the Army Museum, quite extensive. Views of Halifax from there are awesome!

Anushan Rajendran

A great national historic site. A must visit in halifax.

Ioan Pop

A great piece of history with re-enactments and lots of info, everyone is very knowledgeable and eager to help. The charge is not high for entrance and you can roam around freely and even interact with a lot of pieces and people.

Alvin J

Walking into the place is surreal. There is a lot going on within the fort for everyone to see. The staff are incredibly helpful and everyone is ready to answer questions or help you out. Make sure to come at 12pm to watch the cannon get fired, and check out the WW1 trenches as well.

Susan Plomp

They forgot to include four of our seven drinks in our drive-thru order. One of the first things we were asked by the attendant was did I give you a bag already? We went through mid-afternoon so it shouldn't have been a peak time.

Chaitanya Miriyala

Very informative historic place. The information board near the entrance gives us the clear idea of this historic place. The infrastructure and view of Halifax are very good.

Joy Fajardo

Enjoyed the view. We only spend a couple of minutes cause it’s raining but because there’s not a lot of people we captured some nice shots.

W E L

It's a great place sadly i didn't get the chance to explore inside.

Irene Gold

So interesting to walk through this living historical site. Would loved to have had more time to look through the museum, and for a guided tour.

James Whitehead

We took our three kids there on Remembrance Day. It was a great way to remember our veterans. The Juno Beach exhibit is powerful and the Military museum is incredible. Lest we forget.

Shahbaz

Loved this place, the meusuem and history and collection gave a good glimpse in past

Amanda Taylor

Loved it, although many things were closed or not running because of shortage of staff ☹ Hope they can get that back up to snuff! But we loved the fort and seeing the cannon go off!

Natalie Cantle

Great place to just sit, have a picnic, play with your dog, or just hang out ! Can sometimes get crowded ! But also a beautiful place to watch the sunset. Also a great place to get some exercise in or check out the historic site for a tour.

Mohamad cheayb

Perfect place to see the city from this fortress. There are old canons all around.

Steff Klingbeil

I loved the citadel! I was so pleasantly surprised by all the cool things you could see. Its so nice to walk through history. They had small museums to peruse. Make sure you go around 11/1130 in the morning so you can be there for the cannon blast at noon!

Mike Kennedy

Nicely preserved and a great piece of history. Well worth the visit. People in period costumes walking about and eager to tell you a story. Great way to spend the afternoon and a must see for any visit to Halifax.

Neill M

A very iconic park of Halifax, put this on your “must do” list. Lots of areas for the kids to run around and you’ll learn a thing or two about the history of Canada. I highly recommend watching the short film near the entrance to help explain the importance of the hill (be careful though, we noticed a lot of black specks of plastic on our ears and face after using their headphones)

Steve Wilson

A well preserved piece of essential Canadian history.

Josi Apps

Awesome!!!!! Thankyou for preserving places like this for the rest of the world to visit. Thankyou for allowing our dogs to visit with us.

Morten Andersen

Considering this is a historical site it is in remarkably bad condition. There’s not much going on up there and high rises blocks the view to the river. This should not be your priority in Halifax.

Pavel Sidakov

A very nice citadel museum site to visit. Towering up on the hill above the town, the rock solid site offers a clear view in all directions. While I did not come for any listed event in particular, I've enjoyed the gun and the cabin demonstrations. A military museum had nice selection of arms displays from world wars. While not for everybody, I think that military afeccionados and boys would enjoy it.

Haitham Chehadi

Great site, historical, museum and militarily items and tracking of wars

A Giant Panda

The place is huge. There is almost too much to look at. They have a huge army museum in the main building. Also has some of the best views of the city and a huge range of exhibits in the several museums on site

Frank Garufi Jr.

Loved seeing, visiting, and learning about Halifax Citadel. It's one of the options on the cruise we went on and I'm glad we opted for it. I highly recommend spending time here if you have the opportunity.

Lora Aroyo

The landmark historical site in the city. It looks more impressive from outside than from inside. There is very little to see. Interesting history, told by historically dressed guides, but beyond a few stories there is not much to see.

Melissa F.

Wasn't busy on a Sunday late morning, was wonderful to visit. Would have enjoyed historical plates and photographs of the certain buildings and posts of note for a more educational visit but there may have been hand outs we missed at the info booths that were closed. All in all. Wonderful historical place to visit.

Peggy Silletti

This citadel is a great place to see. They are under British rule so when you enter the fort they have the British soldiers at the entrance. We were there to see the changing of the guards It was very impressive. Inside the fort they were doing musket shots and the bag pipper was walking around playing. It was a very interesting place to see.If ever in Canada you should make a stop in.

Sifat Jamal Jisan

This is an excellent historical site as a part of Parks Canada. Check out Citadel Hill, as there is so much to see and do there! This is a good place for tourists from all over the world, or even a great place during a local staycation in Halifax.

Ruth-Ann Gordon

We went at a good time and was able to browse when it was not too busy— closer to the end of the day! Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Its a great spot to see the city. Quite steep so fun for the fit hearts. You can run or walk it. Id recommend doing the citadel while walking on your city tour. Driving is a quick in and out, but you cant really stop for extended periods of time, parking patrol are quite active! It’s interesting if you love history and seeing how they lived. It would be good to have printed in the Citadel brochure that Jamaican maroons built it. That is a very important part in the history of the fort!

Mitchell Curry

Really interesting and informative experience. I recommend joining one of their regular tours to get more information on the sites history. The guys who work here are so helpful and friendly.

tom a

From Japan :) Beautiful, historical and interesting place. Must visit in Halifax.

Bridget Cramp

Great place to visit for all the family. There were guided tours or you can walk around by yourself as the guide leaflet explains everything. The midday cannon is fantastic but get there early for a good position

Alexandre Desaulniers

Fun park, good for historians and kids but it get sooooo hot and there are no water fountains that I know of, so if your here to enjoy Halifax culture, bring a water bottle.

Stacy Bruce (ブルース寿帝士)

We absolutely loved our visit!

Jerome Christensen

I had no idea Halifax had such an important role in keeping our country safe for as long as it did. Love the facility and the information as it has been preserved. Great job!!

Citadel Hill is a hill that is a National Historic Site in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Four fortifications have been constructed on Citadel Hill since the city was founded by the English in 1749, and were referred to as Fort George—but only the third fort (built between 1794 and 1800) was officially named Fort George. According to General Orders of October 20, 1798, it was named after King George III. The first two and the fourth and current fort, were officially called the Halifax Citadel. The last is a concrete star fort. The Citadel is the fortified summit of Citadel Hill. The hill was first fortified in 1749, the year that Edward Cornwallis oversaw the development of the town of Halifax. Those fortifications were successively rebuilt to defend the town from various enemies. Construction and leveling have lowered the summit by ten to twelve metres. While never attacked, the Citadel was long the keystone to defence of the strategically important Halifax Harbour and its Royal Navy Dockyard. Today, Parks Canada operates the site as the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site of Canada. It has restored the fort to its appearance when built in the Victorian era.

Carlin Scuderi

Very cool historic landmark with great views of the city. It's a big place, but there are a lot of small rooms along the sides and in the middle with things to do (movies, photo ops, etc.). There was a really cool war time trench you can walk through that gives you an idea of what soldiers saw during that era. That was one of my favorite parts. Overall, you could spend a few hours here. We walked from downtown Halifax.

Noppawong Montri

It's wonderful to visit. Very nice very clean. Staff very friendly helpful and welcome with nice smile. Specially this year celebrated 150 Canada no entrance fee

Dave Kattler

A must see when you are in Halifax, an important Canadian historical sight with a great view of the city.

ian mobberley

Great atmosphere could spend all day there also the pipers

renita pinto

This place is a beautiful experience a walk down the memory lane. The staff all dressed to take you back in time and walking you through the events was a reliving history.

P Green

Lovely walk at the Citadel. We'll kept even in winter, with a great view of the city.

Alex Glukhov

A must visit in Halifax. Lots of history, amazing guides. Don't miss the noon gun!

Tara Elizabeth

Beautiful viewpoint in this historic city. Sometimes you feel like you are walking through Europe as you take in the historic buildings. Then you remember you are learning about the roots of Canada!

Eskimo Buddha

Pristine condition historic fortification. At noon, every day, they fire one pound of black powder (really!) from an ancient cannon with can be heard for miles which will scare the daylights out of you if unexpected. The locals use the surrounding grass to enjoy the sun. Must see.

Jer Green (Greener)

Such an amazing historic place to visit! The kids loved the noon gun and the cannons on display. They even had a couple of free charging stations for electric vehicles.

rebecca donnell

Parks Canada has done a good job of maintaining this site. Staff are helpful and the views are lovely. Walkway goes around the entire site that can be used free of charge.

Seth Wright

Very neat fort with really good views, interesting historical information.

Luis Miguel Gonzalez

A great way to learn more about the strategic importance of the city of Halifax during the last three centuries . Military history. Great place for pictures.

Dustin Walker

Amazing historical site with awesome displays walking you through the history of the Citadel. On the ramparts you have some great views of the Halifax down to the waterfront and you get a sense of just how important this site was especially if you visualize the taller buildings not being there. It also has the Canadian Army Museum which was great!

Paul Baker

Cool spot to visit for a couple hours. Try to time it so you see the moon gun being fired off and the bag pipe/drum marching band. Everyone there knows there stuff and the ww1 trench setup was too notch...detailed and well put together.

Willem Van Volkingburgh

Cool historical place!

Thea Amelia Stevens

My husband and I really enjoyed exploring this little city inside the citadel!

Arjan Jianfar

big fort and seems like many things are going on. the staff and the tours are great.

Rob Mirkovic

Cool slice of history with interesting exhibits, including the noon canon firing.

Tamar Drushka Hewitt

Kinda cool history to be glimpsed here. We enjoyed the tour - the guide pointed out some rather humorous aspects of the citadel’s history and the views of the city are nice.

Michael Bianco

Great historic site. Try and arrive for 11am, so you can see the gun firing demonstration and the noon canon gun.

Michael Valdivielso

Lots of displays and artifacts. Would take half a day to do a proper walk through but not something for everybody. If you are not interested in military history it is not likely for you.

Cynthia P

We have seen so many of forts and citadels, I wasn’t sure how this one would be different. The Citadel is very well restored, with costumed cast members, tours and rooms furnished as in the period. In honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day they have a display of Juneau Beach. There is an military museum that is well done. We spent 2 hours and could have easily spent more time if we could.

Sandy T

Wonderful place with so much history. The young man playing the pipes is so talented too. The view is amazing. Take time and join one of the tours to learn more about the history!

Stefan Klabe

Really good spot. Great exhibition, people wearing historical clothes, great view to Halifax.

Didar Nanakaly

Great place for visitors who want to know about the past and military troops and weapons used in the past when they discovered Canada, by the way it has a very beautiful view over there because of the hight of the Citadel.

Letitia C

What a great visit. A must do in Halifax. There were live exhibits happening throughout with many guides to give more information to visitors. Gun firing. Live pipers. Changing of the sentries. Touring all the rooms. Trying on uniforms. Climbing the walls. Lots to do in the 2 + hours we were there. If you have kids get them to do the Xplorers program. There is a cafe and we enjoyed our oat cookie snack immensely.

Julian Wong

This must be an interesting place for Canadian because of the historic background. There is so much to see and learn about Canadian history. The people running this place also put up many activities like shooting the musket to relive the history. The place is big and not much shelter so be wary of the sun during the summer. There is limited parking in the Citadel so be prepared to do some climbing if you park further away and allocate at least an hour or more to enjoy this place. The museum is a good place to avoid the hot sun.

Janessa Irene

Going in the low season is always a better experience in our opinion. We were able to stay and talk with one of the museum workers about the building, the restoration and even the drainage. The noon Canon was awesome.

Paul Nazareth

Awesome historical education site It’s a nice walk up this hill by sidewalk or grass path. Have seen the Citadel so many times and wanted to visit with family - thank you parks Canada for making kids free and adults very affordable!! Lots of different educational experiences inside and an air conditioned visitor Center with historical movies for the kids to learn from. Lots of hands on demonstrations too. Best of all is the views from inside the walls and all the cool cannons. Then, the walk down on the water side is equally beautiful.

Neil Jonker

We found this area by accident. We were staying at a B&B nearby and passed this "hill" on numerous occasions. From outside it looks like a hill with possibly a ship on top and I didnot understand the fascination. Finally, on Canada Day we climbed up to check it out and were pleasantly surprised. The Fort inside has something for everyone. There are rooms set up to see how life looked, some museum type setups on one side, cannons and even people sporting clothing from the era. Take the time to make the climb. Your legs will regret it but the rest of you will be glad you stopped by.

Dimitris Protsios

A must visit of you are in the city. Be there before 12 noon to watch the noon gun firing! Lots of historic buildings, great ity views and very nice guided tour provided. The museum inside the fort has a lot of interesting artifacts, uniforms and a huge variety of guns covering different eras. Nice gift shop too. You can easily spend 3-4 hours to see everything.

Vitalii Rykunov

Nice place to enjoy the view on the grassy hillside and parts of Halifax

Jordan Hiltz Haughn

An excellent and very informative experience. Visiting the citadel is both enjoyable and sobering. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. There was the added bonus of the entrance fee being waived for Canada 150, but their prices are extremely reasonable regardless. I highly recommend visiting, whether you do the tour or guide yourself. There's a lot to see and learn.

Arthur Ma

Spent over an hour and a half at the end of our second day in Halifax. Great views and very educational.

Matt

This is a great place to visit to see some of Canada's oldest history. There's a great view of the city as well, well worth the entrance fee.

Taiza Araujo

Nice view, awesome place... Full is History. There was a real fair, just like the old days... It was really immersive

Aayush Shrestha

Lovely place with bright atmosphere! One of the most cheerful place in Halifax during occasions.

Linda Sneath

A great place to visit, but give yourself enough time as there is so much to see and read. We spent 3 hours here but could've stayed longer. Many interesting and educational exhibits inside of the buildings of the Citadel. The war museum is a must see. Very friendly staff, many restaurants close to the site.

Debashis Mukherji

It is a splendid historical structure and showcased well with actors as soldiers and other students from Quebec taking on roles over the complete responsibilities of the fort like structure in summers. The tour would take you about an hour or two to soak in the beautiful views and the history about the structure.

Dave Garroway

Always a great place to visit every so often. Noon gun can set off many memories and its roar and echo are memorable. Think what a 32pounder on a man of war would do to the eardrums

Justine Soucy

Citadel Hill is a wonderful touristic attraction. It's a historic sight and features great views of the city, interesting exhibits, and a changing of the guard ceremony that was very fun to watch (I'm sure there's more to do but they close quite early so didn't have time to do everything). They offer free guided tours every 30 minutes or so but they don't visit every single part of the citadel so Adam I decided to check things out on our own. We headed to the temporary exhibit first which was a recreation of trenches and it was so well done it was disturbing. It felt so real and so scary. I'm not claustrophobic but I couldn't even enter the recreated bedrooms/nurse station because it felt creepy. We then headed to the top area where we stopped at every nice viewpoint and descended into the areas with supplies/ammunition. We then got to see a changing of the guard ceremony and finished with the mini museum section where the info desk is as well as the gift shop. I would really recommend buying any souvenirs you might want at this gift shop, the prices were better than the other places I saw and for the same things. I regretted not getting anything. A really great activity. PS: Another Amazing Race Canada season 3 location!

Syed Shah

Great piece of history for history buffs. But the real deal is the Halifax city views. Just this point and you can the the whole city. We went in the rain, so it was not as good but it would be great in bright and sunny day. The change of guard ceremony is nice. But check for the times when it happens.

Rajasekhara Reddy

Nice place to have a walk and see downtown Halifax from top view . It’s wonderful during sunset .

Pascal W. Couillard

A beautiful place to visit. Really cool to wrap you head around and imagine how things used to be back in the day. Lots of old military equipment and the people working here are period-dressed.the best part is it gives you a good lay of the land of Halifax and the shape of the city. I would recommend 60-90 minutes to visit at minimum. Some great pictures to be taken from the north and south platforms.

Sarah Rumley

We have visited the Halifax Citadel several times during the day but never at night. The ghost tour was fantastic!

Sara Imrie

First world war trenches were a highlight. Free for Canada 150 is a great treat to take advantage of.

Linda Sue McKinney

Great place for a half day visit, costumed soldiers and others give tours and answer questions. Pleasant experience and a highlight of our visit to Halifax

Rob Shelley

Cool spot with nice views of a part of downtown. The real treat was the excellent conversation we had with a guide in the recreated Great War trenches. He was super nice and knowledgeable and talked to my cousin and I for a good 30min after the tour.

Shyla Tibando

So much detail has gone into this site from the costumed staff, to the bunker, the rifle demos and to the bag pipers. It was a foggy day, but we still had great views of Halifax.

Ryan Lye

The staff working there where great. The young man working in the school house was out standing with my kids.

Murilo Torres

What a great spot to enjoy with your family and friends! Thanks Halifax!! ????????

Stewart Meow

Great, recommend to anyone

Dave Hounslow

Loved the historic tour of Halifax and seeing all the landmarks

Mohamed Eldeeb

Could spend hours there without getting bored Arrange your visit to be around 12 PM to attend tbe launch of the grand cannon Ask for the guided tour in English or French and while waiting you can visit the military museum in second floor or the one next to the old car

chris Audi1

me and my wife did enjoy our guided tour with a bilingual employee This is a wonderful experience! Lots of historical information there is 2-3 museum inside you can visit at 12h00pm they shoot with a canon (only 1 lbs of power ) but still impressive there a parking on the top if you going close to halifax it a "must do" place it look like there is a night ghost tour but didn't have the time to do it i did like it a lot but i think fort henry was a little more fun

Kirk Bratvold

An informative historic resource with great city views.

Randula Karunajeewa

A vibrant historical site with plenty to see and do. One can enjoy a detailed museum or Canadian military history, bagpipes and drums from a period tattoo and a WWII trench experience.

Ron Mosocco

Great Historical Museum to learn of the past in the Halifax area. Rich in authentic costumes, a lot dwells on the military and how it played a bill role in defending Canada all the way from World War I with a major focus on World War 2, on up to the Afghanistan War. We salute these valiant soldiers!

Ian McKenzie

Had a great time exploring this historical Canadian site!

Stephan Deguise

This place was real fun they do get you back in time there is also a guide there in the dieppe Normandie section a true passionate men that know is stuff

Darien Rowsell

Great Historical Site! Very educational! We'll cared for. Workers in period dress.

Nathalie Pedro

A must see historic place. Very moving military museum. Lovely people and guides for the visits.

Leah D

This was a surprise hit. We weren't too prepared for the visit but we had a Discovery Pass so thought we'd check it out. I highly suggest getting there to witness the daily cannon shot into the harbour at noon. It's hard to describe how awesome an experience that is. The Citadel, the views, the staff demonstrates, the rooms and abundance of information could have easily taken is 4+ hours to go through thoroughly.

Nathalie Landry

I love this kind of historic places but unfortunately I'm injuries and need a wheelchair. This place is AWFUL for person who need wheelchair. Also, no military discount like Quebec citadelle. The place is beautiful but they need to entertain more the site. Love the army museum.

Mike Mullen

Excellent historic fort run by Parks Canada. Entrance is $11CAD each for entrance to the fort. You can still get good views of Downtown for free from the too of the hill. Once entered you have access to a wide square where visitor ambassadors re-enact in authentic dress, military acts from the past. There are public rsst rooms, a small cafe and displays of public rooms containing original furniture and fittings. You can climb stairs to walk the Citadel walls. Canon placements are still in place. There still sight holes. There also viewing platforms offering views of Downtown and the harbour. Disabled access to square and adjacent areas is good. Access to walks will be problematic.

Kelsey Knutson

Get your hands on history! You will be impressed exploring the Citadel. This is a Canadian treasure that will take you back through the evolution of Halifax.

Kirk Hickling

Worth seeing (if already in Halifax) even for the slightly high price of admission to a publically funded museum. For the kids a novel idea to play "spy" with a series of clues and mission leads children and families around the fort highlighting the historic features and history of the fort and people who lived and built the fort. Along with this unique self guided'tour' of the fort, standard guided tours in French and English are available. Black powder musket demonstrations, Cannon firings, Musical performances, authentic period dressed staff, and "Changing of the Guard" demos round out the experience.

Michael Budrow

This place is a fortification that protected Halifax from potential Invaders and it is now part of Canadian history since yesterday. The fight for freedom is real and it's necessary... I shall continue to fight

J

Just an amazing experience on Canadian history. Very affordable admission.

Dan Schiltroth

If you have ANY interest in Canadian history or Canadian Military history, absolutely GO! Great guides in period costume, interesting museum exhibits, and the Citadel itself as a defensive military structure is fascinating.

D Morrison

Very interesting place, it never had to defend itself but was impressive. The workers are very well educated on the history of the place.

Twaseen Khandaker

Relive history with style.. The citadel is one of a kind historic place which shows you the might of British forces and the level of knowledge they possessed regarding building, warfare and strategy.. You can drive up-to the citadel gate and we got a free entry due to Canada’s 150th Anniversary

Maher Jebara

Lots of history and cool attractions for different war eras

Jeff Kahane

This was a really cool place for my daughter and I to explore. You can get right up to the top of the walls where they used to shoot cannons from and it is a great view of the Halifax city. It’s worth the walk up the hill.

Mirosław Ławczys

One of the not-to-be-missed Halifax attractions. Be there for noon canon salute.

Tim Dunn

Great experience for adults and children. The interactive comic book game provided my seven and ten year olds with ample adventure and the reinactments and thorough explanations were wonderful for my wife and I.

Denise Kitagawa

In addition to the history, this is a great location for photography (architecture, landscape, people and costumes) and has interesting geology. We spent a couple of hours wandering. Highlights included the changing of the guard and all the summer student "recruits" undergoing training (marching, cannon fire, etc). The bagpipe player added a special touch. If you have a Parks Canada Discovery Pass, it covers admission to this National Historic Site. The only reason I'm not awarding 5 stars is because the information centre was unable to answer one of my questions about the site, even after phoning a friend! :)

Tristin Wall

Very cool fort. I wish things were open like the cafe and gift shop but due to covid and it being December everything was closed. At 12:00 each day the in charecter guards fire a cannon and it is very cool!

Elizabeth Horodnyk

Great place to walk around in. The museum inside is really great to with a lot of war history. Grab some freebies on a hot day at the downstairs cafe!

Cindy-Lee Samuel

Very informative and worth planning to be there for the noon cannon blast.

Georges Nakhle

Loved it, people there are very helpful, the place is still very well preserved with many different things to see; Firing a cannon simulation, bagpipe players, execution simulation and a nice Museum with interactive information

Markus Tonsaker

The Citadel has so much history to offer. If you are very interested in the history of Nova Scotia and the military, then this is the place for you.

sam cholakian

Well kept Citadel , very helpful crew.

Arthur Murphy

I always love visiting the Citadel, it's always fun to see the recruits in the courtyard doing drills and occasionally having the drill instructor shoot their gun. Never had a bad time here!

Samson Tam

Amazing to visit. Free tours available, make sure you also visit the war museum (free, by donation) inside as well.

Evan Hardy

Enjoyed a great evening ghost tour, definitely recommend.

T Duong

Fun little themed fort. Many of the parks canada employees dressed in costume to imitate the lifestyle of the early settlers. Educational, fun, and cheap. Would recommend! Bring water and sunscreen :)

Paul Van Buren

Wow! Well worth the visit but wear good walking shoes, bring a camera and plan to stay for a few hours. Do the group tour and then go back and visit the various areas that the guide speaks about. There is a good coffee shop for a snack and a drink. There are lots of various dramatization and plenty to capture your attention. My children loved it all but especially the exploring parts.

Iris Booker

Great place to tour. We walked from the cruise terminal. The climb to the top was steep but the view from the top was worth it.

Blair Day

Good value, and the staff are very accommodating, I wouldn't want to go in the middle of the summer since it would be a mess of people and parking, but the shoulder season is great.

Fiona Bratvold

Historical look at the Citadel's role in the war. Tickets were off season prices. 20 min. Guided tours were offered. Gift shop was open.

Snehal Mohapatra

This place has a huge history behind it. This is a must visit place inorder to understand the importance of Canada in the history of the world. Its a delight to see the staff acting as if they are a part of the old era wearing all military costumes. I really appreciate their dedication. Due to Canada 150, parks Canada has kept it as a free entry. So its the right time to visit. They have maintained really very well with all the structures still intact. Make sure you don't miss the Canon ball firing event. This is the main highlight of the Citadel everyday around 11 am-12 pm. You will go back in time for sure. Also please spend sometime at the Citadel museum. Its shows the history of Halifax as an important destination in world history. Don't miss the view from the top.

Google Guide

Lots of history to this national treasure. Informative tours, displays, and demonstrations reflective of all the major war periods. Great views overlooking Halifax. Free entrance for Canada 150. Limited onsite parking for a reasonable fee.

Gulfam Haqnawaz

I loved it, a historical site one should must visit if they are in Halifax. The views are amazing from the top. The walk around this is approximately 1km and gives you the view of waterfront, downtown and as well the other areas of halifax.

Stephen Powell

It was great..they do tours and the folks in period dress are there to answer any question..well worth the trip

Kings Kegwaehi

It was interesting, a lot of history to go through. The 12pm boom was epic!

Sandy N Buchan

What can you not like about this spot, highest spot in downtown, beautiful 360 degree views of Halifax, clean, well maintained...history to be seen every where you look, great spot to chill out and soak in the city????????

Andrea Whenham

My husband and I had the guided tour. It took about 40 minutes with quite a large group. The tour guide was great! He was very humorous and was able to answer almost all of the questions asked by the group. The tour was very informative and we were able to visit a large part of the Citadel. I do wish that it was longer, because there were places that you didn't see, like other houses around the Citadel and other areas, but they only have so much time! The Citadel is very well maintained and a great source of information and entertainment for the day!

Rick Cantwell

First time visit to this beautiful city, learning my history all over again but feeling like I was there from the beginning. The knowledge of the staff and info is somewhat unbelievable. Truly a must visit when in Halifax.

Chelsea MacIntosh

Such a wonderful experience. One of Halifax's best kept secrets, for sure ????

Marcus H!!

Great place to see elevated views of the entire city!! Has a great history pertaining to the country if you visit the operation inside. Reasonably priced at $8.

JohnandLis Humphreys

Beautiful site! A must visit in Halifax. Outstanding panoramic views of the city from this site!

Jacqueline Benitez

Is a place full of history this day was Victoria day May 21 I love to visit this place.

Deba Sahoo

always go there few minutes before the hour. tour starts 5 minutes past hour. drill happens on the hour. you can live both. fees are a bit high for it beholds.

Don Kane

Citadel Hill overlooks the city of Halifax. It is one of the most remarkable monuments to the historic elements in Canada. The fortification is a must see Halifax NS. It has a remarkable reputation around the world. It has incredible archival displays of the time period of its running daily existence from its creation up to modern WWII usefullyness. It is one of the top tourism sites in Canada. Daily it shoots off its noon guns. The views of the city as you drive around the top allows viewers to see all of the Halifax cities landscapes.

Andrew de Boer

Amazing time here. Great historical information about the fort, and a cool military museum as well. Make sure to make time for the firing of the noon gun!

Barbara Patterson-Smith

Great historic artifact! People were knowledgeable and friendly. Lots to see and do. Museum is a must see. No changing of the guards due to covid but the cannon being discharged was awesome!

Katherine Taylor

It was honestly amazing and very educational. Had a great time exploring.

Sumeet Singh

Incredible place. Extremely beautiful. They have recreated the environment in the fortress as it was in 1760. There are people dressed up as Scottish soldiers who, among other things, fire their guns in a demo. Excellent experience. Highly recommended.

Andrew Webb

Plenty to see, but the well-thought-out exhibits are hidden within the fort itself. Great tour guides, too!

J Y

A must see for anyone interested in Historical sites. Good for kids as well. Live actors and everything. Has a trench exhibit which was incredibly well done.

Nikhil Chaurasia

This a nice place to visit and learn about the military deployments which were protecting Canada once. Do take the guided tours which is included in admission price and see the rounds being fired as well. Best time to visit is between 1PM and 3PM to catch all the action.

Cathy Puskas

I think this site is well worth going to. There are pretty good displays of the region's and the site's history. There are plenty of people around to share more information. And the views from the citadel are fantastic. The only thing to be aware of is that tourist season seems to kick off in mid to late May, so when I went there was a lot of construction/maintenance and several of the exhibits were closed. One other thing to note: it gets really windy up there! Dress warmly and I wouldn't advise wearing a hat!

Ashley March

A must see if your in the city as a tourist. A great attraction for all ages. Learn how Canada prepared its Navy from the Halifax shores during World War Two and how Halifax responded to The Great Explosion. Reminds me alot of Fort Henry which is generally the same idea. Cant bo wrong I'd you're a history buff. Great views from the top as well!

Stella Metran (stellams)

It was nice, but it wasn't operating in the regular schedule so no presentations or explanation other than the banners

Jagdish Bodani

Must visit historical park, walking distance from downtown Halifax. Scheduled guided tours and performances.

Christopher Muro

We had a really great experience here. They have a fun program for the kids to help them get more interested in each of the exhibits. All of the staff were very in character and knowledgeable about their roles.

skottidogg10

This is a great spot to view parts of surrounding Halifax city. Drive around, stop in one of several 'rest spots'. Check out the construction techniques...we CANNOT create walls this impressive anymore. Part of the 'lost technology' class.

Robert docta

What a wonderful experience. Please make sure to get money for the entrance and the parking. On one of the pictures there is the prices I think the last one.! Have fun and enjoy. The personnel is fine and you can ask them any questions related to this site.

Stephan Werlen

Absolutely a must in Halifax! The staff is so helpfull and knowledgeable. Thank you for the lovely time spend on these grounds

James Campbell

Great history an unsurpassed reconstruction of a citidal. Something Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Canada can be proud of. Beautiful views of the city and ajoining areas. Go visit for yourself spend the day enjoying all that Halifax has to offer.

Helvi Slytherin

They play backpipe in Scottish National clothes, which gives a nice vibe. Cannon fires at noon, pretty loud. Guide was wearing that period clothes and she was telling the story as she was from that time. That was nice touch. Citadel has multiple small museums. The observation point on the wall is pretty useless.

Muns Masalmeh

Kids rolling on the grass and racing downhill... can't ask for more.. clean nice place ... nice view is a plus

Steve Knights

It's a great opportunity to travel back in time and see the contribution made by the soldiers who secured the Halifax Harbour at the Citadel.

Kevin Paris

Amazing view of the city. Went on Canada Day and they had lots of things going on. Well staffed and very interesting.

Damaris Kazor

Great historic museum with knowledgeable actors and reenactments. The displays could be a bit more logically organized but still very interesting

Lai Chan

Canada goes to WARS! See it, read it and experience it!

Kelley Cornwell

Such a beautiful experience. It was about 12 degrees that day, but the sun was shining and it was great to get out and move around. Breathtaking view of Halifax, NS. Canada

Darrell Clarke

We loved the history. All the people there are dressed in proper uniform and the museum is well taken care of. They offered a package that let our kids be soldiers for the day. They had a blast. The kids had to enroll, suit up, raise flags, March, drum and stand Sentry. We spent several hours touring the site and looking at artifacts from the period. When in Halifax, check it out.

alex leprovost

A beautiful historical site to visit with an amazing view of the city of Halifax! Their live history program keeps the fort animated at all times with recreation of firing squads and drills! The noon gun they fire everyday is also amazing as well. Many exhibits to see, many are very well detailed and very interesting, I cannot recommend this historical site more! Right in the middle of downtown also makes for a convenient location to explore the city afterwards.

Hadi Saifi

From up there you can look all over the city

Richard Daley

Very interesting, has a lot of the Nova Scotia pass history and if you dig deep, there is a lot of things we should not be proud of. Ask about how the fort was built and what happened the the black labor force after the fort was built. A very dark side of our history well the British Empire was in control.

Arthur Soporan

The citadel's a great place to visit for anyone interested in history, be it that of Halifax, Atlantic Canada, the British Empire, or early modern militaries. There's free tours and helpful staff that can show you details and answer questions, and plenty of rooms to explore, both on the grounds and on the ramparts. While on the walls, you get some great views of the city too! There are also several musket firing demonstrations throughout the day and a cannon firing at noon - experiencing those really puts the whole musket era in a new perspective. They have an exhibit dedicated to the evolution of Canada's army, and sometimes they also have specialised exhibits, like for the invasion of Normandy. Overall super cool sights and awesome staff!

Graham MacCara

It's a nice clock, but has anti vaxxer protesters there often.

Jenna Turner

When you're in town you have to stop here and walk around. The reasonable entry fee makes it accessible to everyone. We came on a day where we were able to shoot an 1871 musket! This was an amazing experience!

Khaled Jewel

I have visited Citadel Hill few times . Citadel Hill is a National Historic Site in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Four fortifications had been built to defend the town from various enemies. It’s in the heart of Halifax city. It’s an amazing structure, and will give you an outstanding view of the city. Surely, it’s structure, historic facts and strategic importance (when it’s built) will astonish anyone. If you are in the city and you like historical places, I would highly recommend visiting this place.

Paul Brooker

Very interesting. The new WW1 trench exhibit is well worth the visit.

Kristen Major

Very cool to learn about Halifax in the various wars. Great place to learn about how the war times were in the citadel. Go before 12 to watch the Canon fire :) great for families!

Teo Norwood

Ghost tour was very spooky. Loved the stories! Very well guided.

Kevin Konkle

Informative self guided tour. Great views with a bit of history.

Pat Ling

We were here 15 years ago and this new visit was great. Well maintained grounds

Hamed Hamidi

The whole downtown is under your feet. Make sure not to miss the sunset ????☀️

Chad Embree

This may not be the place that everyone wants to go, but it’s somewhere everyone should go. Learning about Canada’s history in wartime is important. The D-Day physical experience was outstanding and surreal.

Gail McArthur

My 1st visit here...I'm very glad we did the walk through...I would say ..its a must visit.. We were lucky enough to be able to see the lighting of the noon cannon go off ... Very nice staff...so knowable..

Brenda Reid

Very historically interest. Also has coffee shop and light snacks. Wheelchairs available that will roll through the gravel inside the fort, elevator for access to the top of the fortress. Very friendly guides. Restrooms available.

Mang0 Donald

Absolutely stunning place to visit. Rich history. Highly recommend walking atop the old fort walls. Very odd feeling knowing soldiers used to defend the fort against attackers. Very cool

Chandu Bompalli

Witnessed the gun firing by the 3rd Brigade Royal Artillery to announce the noon hour, had guided tour and visited Halifax Citadel Army Museum, which showcases Canadian military history from First World War .....

Steven Smailes

Fascinating bit of Canadian history! Well done! Google tells me that the average visit time is just 1 hour; I was there 2 hours and still must return to see it again, there's much to digest. All for a measly $8.00!!!

Nigel Hutchinson

I found this place surprisingly much larger and awe inspiring than what I was expecting. It was also really great admission was free due to Canada 150, although I would've paid to go in anyway. The stonework is massive and the place has much to see and explore. The staff were helpful and friendly. The exhibits we're extensive and very free to roam about and explore without much restriction. The war museum was really neat (if you're into that stuff) with hundreds of weapons and firearms from each war and era coupled with great war stories. We really enjoyed our visit on a sunny day.

Nathan Honsberger

Not a history buff, but walking around the citidel is something to do in Halifax. Lots open to explore and very friendly staff. Saw a festival going on from the view at the top and gave us another fun activity.

Shalini Ojha

Just to see the place, listening to the bagpipes and gunshot, Canon firing, it was an experience to cherish and memorable moments to remember for a long time.

J C

This place was a neat visit. The staff are friendly and interactive. The war exhibit was interesting.

Farheen shaikh

beautiful...even my 8 yr old enjoyed d tour n stories told by d students who worked here..and hearing the bagpipes in real life was an experience in itself.

Victoria Oppenlander

Parks Canada did a great job with this site. Free guided tour of the fort as well as able to walk around and self explore.

Mike Mescia

We didn't really know what we were walking to but it looked interesting at the top of the hill where the 2 masts are. Great surprise - very well maintained historic site. Lots of staff (in character) to explain what you were looking it, guided tours, changing of the guard, rifle fire, drums, bad pipes.... Lots to stay entertained.

Louis Chow

This is a great place to learn how canada contributes to the wars in the past. Each room has its own guide to tell you the history Such as the living condition of the soldiers, clothes that they wear, tools that they use, and how they are trained. The only thing that i find difficult is using a stroller to move around the area. The staffs there are very friendly amd willing to help

Michael Dyke

Well worth the visit. Boys enjoyed it immensely. You can dress up in period clothing, fire a musket if you so choose to, listen to bagpipes, and read about the rich history of Nova Scotia, and its crucial place in North America as dictated by that history.

S G

An interesting historical site, in excellent condition - I couldn't believe how old it is. We visited during a cloudy Canada Day and learned a lot from the staff. Very easy to find in the middle of downtown Halifax. Terrific views of the city, a surprisingly robust museum within, too.

Marjorie Portman

We’ve been twice to the Citadel and if you’re a history lover, this is the place to come. Great historical site and museum. We managed to catch a tour on our first visit and be around for the noon gun. Amazing. On our second visit with friends visiting from the West, we had a chance to meet Duncan one of the bagpipers who gave us an awesome background about his uniform and bagpipe as well as speaking some Gaelic to us (upon our request). Since we have more visitors coming, I’m sure we’ll be back in a month!

BW Hui

Very informative and a good learning experience. Admission for adult only and kids are free.

Joanna Montanaro

Historic site and museum. A cannon is shot from here every day at noon. It is worth seeing(bring ear plugs). Just over $7 per adult off-peak season and around $12 per adult during peak season.

Ben Wervers

Not a bad site. Very historic fort but yet very poor in the way of tours and people explaining the area. Very much a go on your own type of place. Had potential to be fantastic but is lacking in people and character compared to other forts across Canada. Still a must do in the Halifax area.

Daniel Richard

Nice place to visit. Awesome friendly staff. And the ghost tours are fun. You get to visit some parts of the fort tunnels at night with just a candle lit lantern.

T G

Great place to visit for some Halifax history! Went with a school group and had an awesome tour guide! We were able to see the noon canon being shot as well. Great for any local or who wants some history and especially a place to stop for tourists!

Adam Conrad

Glad to tour this place as a child. Now I am an adult and it was just as fun go through everything again.

David Carlson

The fort was awesome. It was full of interesting sights and informative displays. The staff was very knowledgable and friendly. One of the highlights was that of the bagpiper playing haunting melodies at various times throughout the day. They also had a partial recreation of D-Day from a Canadian soldier's perspective.

Nick Angiers

This place is amazing! We had originally planned just to go to the top of the hill for the view, but I was really glad we decided to take the tour. It's 25 minutes and is included in your admission fee, which is only $8.90. I also recommend setting aside at least 40 minutes for the awesome museum, so about 1.5-2 hours in total.

Flo Wong

It's Canada's 150th Birthday, admit fee is free of charge. Lot to see in the museum, very educational, very relaxing. Don't forget to visit the Public Garden near by.

Shawn

An amazing piece of Canadain history, a must see If your in Halifax. As by designed view points of the entire city are spectacular, harbour and sunsets are fantastic. Take the guided tour to understand the history.

Dallas Fleming

Not very busy, remember it from when I was kid, not disappointed in the least. Great place to learn about some of the provinces/nations war history. Recommended for children and history buffs :)

Dean Decker

Steeped in history. It literally is like stepping back in time and you forget that you are feet away from the beautiful bustling downtown Halifax. An architectural marvel brought the life with real life re- enactments. The period costumes and actors added to the while experience.

Esron Blavinskij

It's pretty neat, lots of little displays that tell the history of the citadel, and of the city itself. The huge court yatd reminded me of Squid Games. It has some pretty nice views of the harbour too.

J-D Robinson

A little pricey, but certainly worth a look. Just walking the outer walls was good. Great views of the city

Nury Lopez

The tour is amazing this is what this historical monument is A series of four different defensive fortifications have occupied the summit of Citadel Hill. Construction and levelling resulted in the summit of the hill being dropped by ten to twelve metres. Whilst never attacked, the Citadel was long the keystone to the defence of the strategically important Halifax Harbour

Elaine

This is a wonderful experience! Lots of historical displays and people in period costume to explain things. There is opportunity to dress in the typical soldier's uniform complete with kilt and headdress. And you can shoot one of the rifles. There are bagpipers and artillery displays as well as museum exhibits. Try to be there for the firing of the noon cannon which occurs daily!

ST T.

Not to be missed place if you are in Halifax. Historic site on the highland overlooking to the waterfront. There is a cafe and souvenir shop on the first floor and Army Museum on the second floor. Have a chance to see routine change of guard on duty every hour, only at operating hours, and noon cannon firing. Worth visiting and recommend to spend at least one and a half to explore the place

Ghina Besbes

Nice historical site well located in downtown of Halifax. Solders are dressed up with scotland clothes. Demo with the weapon and a lot of interesting information given by the guide in English. Recommend to visit

Lily Bartel

Definitely need hours to check this out. the place is full of history and awesome. If you can get a guided tour even better.

Michelle Girard

Absolutely beautiful, historic fort full of history with well informed guides throughout. Really enjoyed every minute.

Philip V

The Quebec Citadel and the Halifax Citadel are both worth seeing. I love the rifle firing and the cannon shooting.

Chris Patterson

This is a wonderful site to visit. Enjoyed learning about the history of Halifax. They fire the cannon on a daily basis. They also have a bagpipe and drum performance. There are various exhibits to explore as well.

Harry Carter

Well worth the effort: it is a steep hill climb on foot. Well preserved, interesting views of the city along with explanatory placards. Some re-enactors that add color although they don’t seem very enthusiastic.

Justin Stiksma

Our kids thought the noon cannon firing was awesome. The our was informative & the Normandy beach exhibit was excellent.

Jeffery Tong

Great site to visit. I liked how they had the employees dressed in different uniforms providing information for different sections as well as the short guided tour included.

Arjana Siva

The citadel is very much like a museum with different artifacts in different parts of the building. However, the people working there do a very good job of being very original. The highlight of the visit was the noon firing where they fire a canon at noon everyday to continue with a historical tradition. There is a lot of walking outdoors so be prepared for cold temperatures depending on the time of the year you go.

Carly Cotarelo

A must see while in Halifax. Great place to visit and highly recommend the tour

Paul Sardella

Old world fort built by the British, with live actors living and working as they did when the fort was in its prime. Leave plenty of time. Too many things to see on a short bus tour. Going back

Eric Wolff

Halifax Citadel park. Beautiful old fortress from bygone times. Very impressive. Makes you appreciate the times we live in.

Richard C

Great historical site with very good presentation for the guided tour. As it turned out everyone who works there are actually quite knowledgeable about the history and the customs!

Jinnie Sahota

The guides here are super friendly and knowledgeable. Spending an afternoon here is easy, fun, scenic and educational.

T Gid

Great day out. Make sure to be there for the noon gun!

John Neville

Enjoyed a visit with my adult daughter, who had never been. It is an impressive structure with great views of Halifax, interesting displays and knowledgeable staff. Also, charged our EV for free!

L Tan

There are English and French guided tours (for free, at a scheduled time) and demonstration of firing of cannon/rifle, so it's quite entertaining both for adults and kids. A lot of exhibition and history here. Highly recommend.

Chris & Sue

Beautiful views of the city...we never went in, but youth are currently free admission

John Barber

Informative and interesting. Personally don't like some of the building additions in modern brickwork as it detracts from the original. Make sure you look inside all areas, there are some rooms that are hidden a little (not intentionally), just be inquisitive.

Charles Lendzion

Our own fault but the facility isn't fully operational just yet as it's the shoulder season. Stuck around for the firing of the noon gun which any visitor must experience. It's just dad to see the effect that the pandemic has had on this site.

Bartek Piraszewski

Guide was quite knowledgeable. Recommend more thorough tour with background information. Overall good experience and would recommend. Should post some information outside on the fort and its Garrison during different times.

Dennis Sheffield

Nice view of the city. Did not go in, however enjoyed walking around it just before sunset.

Kristina Srbljanin

Only was able to read the outdoor information, limited hours for off season and maintenance. Definitely would go back to see the inside of ever back in the area.

Etienne Belisle

Super informative and the soldiers training to walk and switch their rifle to the other shoulder are really intertaning. The museum is great.

Patricia Daniels

Of course during the summer when people are all dressed up in their old costumes and reenacting the time period it's an amazing thing but the hill isn't just that.in the winter months you can go snowboarding and sledding down the hill. Summer months it's nice to lay back in tan on, of course roll down the hill, take your dog to play and I don't know if it's legal but always have a beer or some form of a drink and meet new people.

Jonathan Godin-Hebert

Wonderful place to visit and look around! Went just before sunset and the view was magnificent! Definitely recommend!

Geary Long

A amazing place, extremely well keep and friendly hosts! Love the High noon canon shot to set your clocks by. A must visit in Halifax

Frank Wu

Highly recommend: spent 3 or 4 hours and check every room if you can! I didn't expect finding so many surprises here: (1) the mote, the hallmark of the whole fortress, and then check some gun rooms where one can fire big guns to the mote. Further, check the outside wall of the mote where soldiers can hide and fire rifles; (2) the whole fortress is so well-designed and built that may scare away the potential attackers, but was still actively used in WWII: many Canadian troops were stationed there before being sent to Europe; (3) Army Museum is such a condensed museum covering Canadian Army: I really feel the small and focused museum is more suitable for some of us, as it is hard to concentrate and learn in a big museum; (4) many small rooms you can check out and learn, like tailor room, school, storages; (5) surprise of recreating Normandy beach...

Vicki L

This is a very well-maintained historical site. The guides are very prepared and they give us every single detail of the regiment, uniform, weapons and history. Do go with a guide, really interesting. There’s a change of sentry at 10am. Check for other times. Don’t miss it. The bagpipe sounds beautiful. There’s also the flag ceremony. We also see real young cadets in training. Take lots of pictures with soldiers with different uniforms. A regret is we never made it to the gift shop. Will check it out next time.

Jeremy Fillmore

The citadel hill is a historical site dating back to 1749, first fortified when Cornwallis was Governor of Nova Scotia. It is a reminder of our colonialism and should be dismantled so the space may be better used to serve the public.

maria jose Carmona

this was on Remembrance day. People was really helpful and has tons of information for visitors. Is so terrible think in everything that they have to go through, I just can't imagine.

Ravi B.

Very cool place to visit. There is a free one hour tour of the Citadel. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and did a great job keeping everyone informed and entertained. Parking is cheap ($3) and there is also a museum on site. You are also free to walk around the Citadel if you prefer to explore on your own.

Enrico Anderlini

This is one of the very few citadels left in North America. Here you can learn about the history of Canada, including the wars between Britain and France, and then Britain and the US (as well as more recent stuff). The buildings are original, with few modifications, and there are many interesting exhibitions. As opposed to Quebec, this is no longer a military garrison. Hence, most of the "soldiers" are in fact tour guides dressed as such, but it still gives the impression of authenticity. I think the citadel of Quebec is probably nicer, but I appreciate not having to go through a guided tour.

Sebastian Mueller

Amazing and well taken care of and preserved. The staff are highly knowledgeable and will inform you about everything you need to know. When I’m Halifax make sure to stop here!

Kevin Schroeder

Wide open space love the museum. Lots to see and do. Need at least 3 hours to see everything. Lots of tour guides to walk you through all the exhibits. Best to go for the noon day gun. Really awesome show.

P Pahl

Great place for a kite festival, but you have to go super early to get a parking spot. The kites were amazing. The music was highly inappropriate for children though. Kind of embarrassing in that regard. Still - kudos for putting the kite festival on!!! ????

Chris Watso

Historic Fort, Great interpretive guide, sunny mild day Cannon fire ! What's not to like !

Randy G

Didn't go through the tour on the grounds today but I remember years ago when I had I found it fascinating.

Heather W

Great place to visit and learn loads of information about the history here.

Jayeon Rew

Date visited: 2017-06-24 Noon cannon fire is exciting to witness. The citadel offers a few guided tours. There is a bagpipe player playing music constantly and it really adds to the place. The Army Museum inside is cool, filles with historical artefacts.

Jillian Macnutt

Lots of space & interesting historical features. The canons at noon were fun to hear and see. The fort has been largely untouched - maintained with a few modern updates. Actors in period & military costumes. Museum and staged jailhouse. Beautiful views from the top of the fort. Family & accessible washrooms.

Randy Johnson

super cool place to get to see well kept well maintained The little shows they put on were fabulous

Bob Armstrong

On a beautiful day it is a great place from which to view the city and the harbour.

Travis Ratsoy

Great museum with an array of artifacts and information I never learned in school. Cannon fires at noon and completely changed my perspective of what it may have been like so many years ago.

Ashlee Osterberg

Absolutely amazing! An abundance of amazing displays for WW1 and quality displays for other times as well. Really enjoyed visiting and exploring. The cafe had delicious food, the gift shop was very nice, and the history minded staff was knowledgeable and wonderful. The noon Canon fire was awesome and the bag pipes were played most of our visit! Fantastic experience.

Josh S

Very interesting guided tour (Issac was a great tour guide!) The cannon blast at noon was neat. Lots of of diverse areas to explore. We also loved the interactive video displays showing the history of the citadel.
