Came to the island from Alberta, and really enjoyed the amount of Aboriginal history here but felt like our location lacked diversity. This museum however brought to my attention the diverse history of when the English, Chinese, Japanese, and African immigrants arrived here for coal mining and founded Cumberland. There is so much history in this museum, and I spent 3 hours just looking at all the exhibits, let alone another hour just reading historic files. Great place, and would love to go again.

As one of the families who donated glass negatives from the Willard (Armstrong) Block, and seeing as repairs are being done--I would like to volunteer to add my voice to Cumberland's history. I've just had hip surgery, so can't do any carpentry work, but I am hoping to help you in other ways. Even as a Greeter, because I love to talk about Cumberland Patsy Armstrong

This little museum is packed with historical information from the Cumberland/Comox area. From coal mining and lumber to workers rights and items from that era.

Lately I have been going to several museums and the prices are way up there for admissions. This place does not charge for children under 12. The price alone makes it family friendly . Interesting coal mine downstairs

A great space to learn about the history of Cumberland from the bustling mining city to a village of 3600 people. It took me about 1.5 hours to look and read everything. My most favorite part is the photography collection of Hayashi/Kitamura/Matsubuchi Studio. Exceptional photo quality with interesting subjects and a great story. Thanks so much for reviving these precious photographs from the past. I checked out the basement quickly, and didn't feel easy about stepping into the space. It feels creepy. I rushed through the exhibits, and almost ran upstairs to be back on the main floor. When I was at the last step, the door swung toward me, but was halted abruptly because of the door stopper on the floor, which was there all along. It was a weird experience, but left me feeling anxious and afraid.

What a lovely visit! A great way to get to know the diversity of cultures and the sacrifice of mamy, who called Cumberland home during its mining boom and beyond-- plus, had the wonderful conversation with the curator of the museum. She was so informative and welcoming! Highly recommend it!!

Renee C

A great overview of the mining and logging hostory of the area. A well done recreation of a mine on the lower floor.

Best little museum. The day we visited the basement was flooding from the amount of rain we were getting so didn't stay down there long. The dress up area was fun for kids

Leona Colebank

Woah! History abounds in this little museum that's way better than your average small town museum. Great Cumberland souvenirs, best t-shirts in town and nice selection of local history reading offerings. They do local walking tours that are very engaging, and host a number of fun fundraisers throughout the year. Great preservers of history in a town with huge Canadian history waiting to be dug up. But they should really nix the display of the bullet that didn't actually kill ginger goodwin, it's a nice gesture, but misleading.
