Beautiful art works ranging from medieval to contemporary. I cannot really expand on the different types of art work present in this museum and compare it to others since I haven't been to much so my knowledge may be lacking on basis. However, I can say that I enjoyed visiting this museum and being exposed to the different styles and techniques of art. Bonus: The streets leading up to the museum were really colourful and are very picturesque! (My friends and I went during the month of August) Note: Not sure if this still exist but we left our belongings behind at the counter for bags and jackets (and were given numbers associated with our belongings). We, of course, took anything valuable like cellphones and wallet with us.
Great exhibition of all forms of art. Walking around should take about 2 hours to experience bits of every part of the museum
Great place! Learn a lot about the artists and the motives behind their pieces. Fantastic exhibits dating back to antiquity!
It was pretty good. Art is supposed to get a reaction and there were a few things that made me laugh, like the piece of drift wood with a rope tied to it, or the atv with a bunch of arrows in it. Then of course, there was some classic French art and photography, an exhibit on mummies (I never knew there were so many caskets to a mummy), and just some really interesting/not-every-day art. I prefer just regular sorts of art but I enjoyed the visit and would have been remiss not to have gone.
We enjoyed this art gallery
I love this place! You can fine among the most classic works from all around the world. The way they organize the work based on theme is also worth to mention. Overall, this place is worth to visit while in Montreal
Amazing experience, well laid out tour that follows all Covid-19 protocols, Loved the Jean-Paul Riopelle Exhibit, we learned so much and found it very fascinating!
Went there more than three time during past two years. Love it. The first Sunday every month is free entry. Have many events and activities so every time I would find something new. The shortcomings are that the arrangement of different buildings is confusing and some items of different times or types are put together. Would be better if there’s clear classification and arrangement.
Recent visit here in September 2021. Was blown away. Monet, Picasso, Basquiat, and more! Get a chance to see The World of Yousuf Karsh? Do it. Before it's too late. Come face-to-face with Hemingway, and many more game changers, society shapers and celebrities
A great place to spend a few hours. Staff are very friendly and there are not too many people so it’s easy to keep social distance.
Not a bad permanent collection which includes Picasso some impressionist and an early Gerhard Richter. The temporary exhibits are well curated. Staff is phenomenal and helpful. The guy I came across was engaging, well-versed in the Quebec and international art scene and we discussed some of the pieces and artists in great length.
Another great visit to MBAM. The other buildings were closed as new exhibits were being prepared. Took my fiancee for her first experience and we had a great time. The layout is great here and felt safe. We like how they always feature local artists.
As much as it annoys me that museums aren’t free for students and/or people under 25, I still enjoy the MMFA and I think it’s a beautiful museum that mixes Canadian contemporary art, Quebec art and different sculptures and paintings from the Renaissance times
Not happy at all. Came to see classics and nowhere on the website does it say that they closed off that whole section. I didn’t get experience I came for, I am not at all interested in contemporary art. I killed almost 2h looking for staff I was excited for and I don’t feel this was worth my money. What I liked the most is the building out of this whole experience
Riopelle The Call Of Northern Landscapes And Indigenous Cultures Exhibition. Very interesting. (And a safe space.)
Deserves 5+ stars at any time of the year! You get a good bang for your buck. For $24(taxes included) you get to see original works of Matisse, Picasso, cezanne, rodin etc as part of their permanent collection. Then they always always have something cool on exhibition. Last summer it was the showcase of impressionism and this October they have Yousef Karsh's portraits of many notable individuals on display (think Einstein, Roosevelt, Bardot). Last but not least, they currently have an interesting and meaningful section dedicated to themes of the current world (wink, well you know the big c) Completely overshadows many galleries/museums of similar nature in other major Canadian cities.
Amazing place to know Canadian artists and their creations. Time spent is well worth it.
There are many great collections here that include artifacts and paintings. If you like museums and galleries, I highly recommend going.
Good museum! The coverage of art from Gothic through Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Impressionism is nicely done. The selection is good, although few notable pieces in the collection. There are then some interesting additional fine arts and contemporary exhibitions. In particular the current exhibition on voice was excellent, especially the final room with choir voices. The building is also very impressive, with some lovely window spaces having a great views across downtown Montreal
Not as much to see as we had hoped. But being the first Sunday of the month it was free so we're not complaining. The glass exhibit wasn't open, unfortunately. We enjoyed the Belle Epoch and the Pavilion of Peace section, and the Era of Annual Exhibitions. The Omar Ba exhibit was also interesting.
Terrible experience, after a rip off cab ride of around $50 from my hotel. Arrived at the venue to discover that you cannot purchase a ticket in person(very stupide). Only online purchases.... so, dumb....I pleaded with them and also mentioned I've been having many fraud issues with my online purchasing, thus, I had to deactivate it temporarily.... still no sympathy and I was refused entry. So, I was denied entry and was ripped off by a shady cab driver.... that was the experience in whole.... terrible display of tourism in this city....
I love art, been to a lot of museums, but did not like this one. Really don’t have much, much of what they had was meh (I know that’s subjected and just my opinion). My least favourite museum. Sorry no photos, nothing really captured my attention.
A must see for art lovers. Unfortunately some parts were closed due to covid but none the less a great experience. Walk-ins aren't allowed so make sure to check their website and book your tickets online. Tons of parking around even when it is in the heart of downtown
Truly amazing experience Plan atleast a half day visit or possibly the whole day if you can. Ecological section defntly ranks first for me. Here are some of the work which caught my attention and I loved it.
Fascinating museum with a great blend of contemporary art and historical items. We spent a half day here, which is not even close to long enough - this is a day trip if you want to take your time and see everything. The “voices” gallery had a few arresting pieces and I’ll bet everyone can find something they love on display here.
Nice place if you are an admirer of fine arts.
When I was younger , I remember the museum having just paintings but now there are a variety of exhibitions. I particularly enjoyed going thru the different cultures and seeing the beautiful objects preserved through time. There was also the Yousuk Karsh photography section. What a remarkable and impressive collection of photos from politicians to actors to renowned scientists (Albert Einstein!).
Montreal's best museum - They have some really great permanent and temporary exhibitions. More than just fine art, there are nice collections of contemporary and modern art. The space is expansive and so there's so much to see, I'd say you probably need a few trips to really experience everything. I also really enjoy the architecture of the museum. It's cool to see the different eras fo the museum and the additions that have come after and how they all fit together while still being representative of their era. In the summer, there's also some great sculptures outside of the museum. I think the MBAM is a world class museum so if you enjoy this type of thing, then it's a must see in Montreal.
We went when the international arts section was closed for renovation, which significantly took away from our experience. It was bad timing as the exhibits we saw were good but few. Four+ floors in the Canadian arts section seems like a lot but the rooms are small. Temporary exhibits were interesting.
I love this Museum!! I go each time I visit Montreal and enjoy walking through the exhibitions. Thank you/Merci
Excellent collection. World-class museum. Nice mix of styles and eras.
Some parts were closed due to restoration but there is no discount on ticket. We are still paying the same amount. That is a minus. Another issue was at light orientations. Especially at the 3rd floor gallery (1800’s) lighting placement creates reflections on paintings which makes harder to see paintings on the upper row. Also on some statues there were shadows, which makes negative impact on receiving the artist’s message. I found quite small when you compare Quebec’s diversity and history.
Wonderfully curated. Rarely disappointed except for the Riopel exhibit. The Canadian art collection is great and they feature smaller, emerging artists.
My favorite museum, hands down. I was able to see all 8 floors ( 4 each building) in 4 hours, but you can definitely finish in 2hrs. Just get the map and stick to your plan. My favorite floor was early modern art. And of course this cool monkey from the 70’s lol
Great experience, reasonably priced. If you're driving finding parking can be hard but you can get lucky and find parking in the streets. Now, let's talk about the museum itself. The most interesting collection I found interesting are those of Yousuf Karsh. His works are amazing and this museum has almost all of it. A must see if you do visit this place. I recommend
Great collection of art pieces in beautiful Montreal downtown, unfortunately some sections were closed at the time of our visit, but still enjoyed a lot.
Such a great place to visit ! We loved every moment in this gorgeous museum!
Very extensive collection of modern art that is worth visiting.
I didn't go inside the building. I was only able to go around it and there were lots of arts available outside. They are really creative and beautiful. I can only imagine the inside. Maybe next time I visit Montreal!
Pretty big yellow tree in front of the building for good photos.
Great art. Good atmospheres. There's section for Japanese, Indian, Pakistan, Sikh, African historical artifacts at the top.
This is one of the few presentable fine arts museums in Canada. Walking distance from McGill campus. Parking is rather expensive; most are within minutes of walk. Free admission for kids.
*** MUST GO - BEST FINE ARTS MUSEUM IN CANADA *** this place is packed with over 4 hours or more of exhibits to enjoy! from contemporary art to historical art to modern art, this place has it all in one place! PROS • price point is well worth it • the artifacts are all genuine • lots of art pieces CONS • hard to find parking • always busy If you're a tourist in Montreal or just need something to do, this is the place to be!
Very good display.. love it.. very good experience.
Amazing selection of works! Decided to AR tag their walls with my art ???????????????????????????? (first 9 photos)
This museum was absolutely great. Nice collection of different artists including Canadians and Europeans. Contemporary, Early and modern art exhibits. Surprised to see two beautiful pieces of Picasso’s work here. Due to some renovations only three out of two buildings were available and it was worth visiting.
Wonderful Canadian art in the standard collection. The limited exhibits are worth the visit — Riopelle was presented when I visited.
This place is amazing. I did not realize they have so much good stuff. Even if you live in Montreal, it is fun to be a tourist in your own town. GO check it out!
Very extensive museum where everyone can find something for themselves. Well, maybe less interesting for kids. It has several buildings and we spent more than 2 hours then, and could have spent more, but got too hungry. You can renter the same day though. The restaurant was closed when we were there. Pretty nice museum shop. Was a bit too cold in the building. I wish they would have requested all passengers to have vaccination pass. I would recommend checking the map of the museum first and starting what interest you the most, cause otherwise you get pretty tired by the end. The museum had art from around the world (my least favorite part probably) on the top floor of one of the buildings, then several contemporary exhibitions, exhibition about saving the planet, one with art from employees of the museum, and a lot more. I would come several times to explore fully.
The biggest museum in Montréal. Good collection of each and every article related to arts and creation. Well managed museum with separate section of painting, sculpture, Woodcarving, metal and glass works, netting and accessories. Québec history of fine arts and culture can be learn here. Moreover, it gives a clear picture of global evolution of arts and craft.
A must see for art buffs! Perfect for a rainy day - we spent about 2 hours here and still didn’t get to finish all there was to see. The special echo exhibit was phenomenal!
Beautiful museum, inside and out. The galleries on show were pretty nice, varied in theme and style. Can't give more than three stars since about half of the museum is closed for restoration and/or COVID. We saw everything in about 90 minutes, taking our time.
Was a great venue, with a lot a bunch of exhibits. Kids were engaged and found it very interesting.
Great exhibition spaces, with brilliant service too. The gallery once hosted what is by far one of the best fashion exhibitions ever produced, the 'Thierry Mugler, Couturissime' show. The museum is well within walking distance to everything, but parking can be challenging. Do book if possible too.
Two buildings located on opposite sides of Rue Sherbrooke Street connected by an underground tunnel. Guests must enter through the east building. Nice museums but space management could be better. Some smaller rooms are tightly packed with display items whereas some larger rooms are fairly empty. The Napoleon Exhibit is now on for a limited time (February 3, 2018 to May 6, 2018).
Loved it! This is definitely one of the best art museums I've been to. It's enormous! We were there for many hours and I still think we didn't see everything. It's almost entirely accessible, and I saw people in wheelchairs. I highly recommend visiting it. The museum staff members are friendly and helpful.
Fabulous experience. Amazing art work and an excellent exhibit regarding sound. Very powerful
Absolutely beautiful and fascinating exhibition! I saw the How Long Does It Take for One Voice to Reach Another temporary exhibition and it has some fabulous pieces of art. My favorite was the unison of 40 voices and you could go near a specific speaker to hear one particular choir singer but when you go back to the center, you can hear the harmony of voices instead of a single voice. The Yousuf Karsh photography exhibit was fantastic too; all the portraits were beautifully taken and such stunning works of art.
Amazing place, lots to see. The building in it self is spectacular
I love this museum! I went here last year with my partner, and we couldn’t get enough of it. Absolutely fantastic ☺️
We really enjoyed the open exhibits, but half of them are closed at the moment. A bit disappointing, but we still managed to spend the majority of the day here exploring. The staff is friendly, the art is beautiful, and the historical artifacts are stunning.
Nice museum with a large selection of art. Wasn’t too busy either.
Such a wonderful experience spending time at this Museum while we were visiting Montreal. You could easily spend an entire day or afternoon here. The museum is spread out over various buildings which are all connected internally. Each space is carefully designed to enhance your experience and enjoy the art within these spaces. The architecture itself is beautiful. By far one of the best museums in Canada with fabulous artwork and exhibits to browse through.
Probably by favourite museum in Montréal. Worth spending several hours here. Entry is timed to spread out visits to keep things Covid safe. There is an expansive collection of art and artifacts spanning the ages and the continents. The building itself is stunning and provides gorgeous views of the city. An excellent rainy day activity.
A thoughtful and well-designed museum that had some stunning pieces. Appreciated the multiple floors that showcased a wide variety of Canadian art and art from throughout the world. Definitely could take some time to explore the entire museum!
Fantastic museum will tons of art to see, and something for everyone! It was a gift to see a Kent Monkman painting in person. I would absolutely return when I’m in Montreal next.
Black and white photography by Yousef Karsh was beautiful. Sound exhibition was also intriguing. Nice afternoon in Montreal.
Had an awesome time here. Great, heart touching exhibitions. Nicely curated.
The collection of modern art is fantastic! I also loved the temporary exhibitions, really great curated.
extremely interesting exhibition, even their permanent collection is really cool. I wish i wasn't too tired that day, I would've finished the visit. would go back again a couple of times before the end of this exhibition. I love this place already.
Amazing experience! I'm so glad that I visited the Montreal Museum of fine-arts! My t's a wonderful experience.
Awesome experience , several halls with different artist
Spent almost 5 hours wondering around this place. It’s one of my top favorite museums around the world. I loved the exhibitions going on and the variety of art. The seatings and couches throughout was amazing. So inviting and they want you …
One of my favorite places, the museum is super instructive and holds interesting variety of art in the permanent collections. They also host really fun events. If you're 21 and under make sure you go!! It's free for you
The guide was boring and made the paintings boring but it looks like a meuseum lots of arts. Recommend people that actually LOVE arts. If your not in to it you’ll get bored with headaches like me TRUST. I guess for me it’s 24 bucks down the drain
I thoroughly enjoyed this museum, and it took almost a full day to visit - which I didn't expect, it's a much larger museum than I imagined! Alongside its permanent exhibitions - which are very well and interestingly curated - it had a lot, and I mean a LOT, of temporary exhibitions, each one more interesting than the other! Out of the temporary exhibitions I really enjoyed Ecologies: A song for our planet exhibition. But again, their permanent collection is a must do, it's an interesting and bold curation! Unfortunately, 2 of the pavillions were closed for renovations, but to honest I don't think we could have visited everything in just one day as we're the type of people who spend time on each work of art.
Are you in town for a week or only for the day? This place is a must if you want to see what Montreal have to offer. Big and free admission for those age under 30 for the permanent exhibition. You only need to pay if you want to see their limited time exposition, which is always worth it. My favourite was Mapplethorpe! Go and enjoy.
Great indoor activity!! Had almost 6 floors of exhibitions. Each floor with different styles and themes. Spent a good 3h walking around and taking picture.
Amazing, super cheap and I could spend all day here. The indigenous art and the Karsh exhibitions were standouts
Amazing collection, very culturally aware and well organized. Further, the curators have mixed the past and present in a way that maintains viewer engagement to such a wonderful degree. Love this place!
Good collection. But be aware their printed tickets which are really sharp. I CUT MY FINGER BY THAT TICKET. At least their first aid package have good supply
Post-pandemic advise: If you are under 30, please take advantage of the affordable membership giving you unlimited access to the museum and more! *pre-pandemic picture from the night at the museum event. Was fun!!*
My favourite museum by far. They have an extensive collection of exquisite art!! Would definitely recommend visiting if you’re in montreal!
Extremely well organized..online tkts, staff available to usher you in and provide guidance. Several galleries , well documented information( English and French) on the artists ,genre, the period and influences...can easily spend half a day there. A must visit in Montreal.Parking is tricky and has to be found in the adjoining streets.
Really loved this museum. They had a lot of different works and the set up was really nice throughout the floors. It is quite large as well as it connects into separate floors off of the main level which break off into their own levels with some permanent and temporary exhibits. Came up from Toronto and stopped in here, if you’re going to come more than once you should get the cheaper membership as general admission is $24 but the membership is $35 and it gets you into other museums.
The Museum is huge. I spent 4 hours in there and I wasn't able to read everything cause I was tired already. But overall it was a nice experience.
I‘m so into here!
Great pieces. I wish there was more explanation and sensitivity around how the Indigenous and African pieces came to be in the museum.
Great curation of different styles and time periods. The building itself offers incredible views of the city. Definitely a good place to walk around and immerse yourself in thought.
Not much to see at Wednesday exposition but prices are cheaper than usual so I guess they kinda compensate for it. Just felt super small. Service was great though and extremely clean and well maintained
It's got a very few big name pieces like Rodin and Picasso, but mostly 2nd and 3rd tier offerings. The worst was a collection of rubbish done by the staff that took most of a floor. Save your money. A visit to Schwartz's would be more satisfying to the discerning.
This is an absolute must visit place if you like good art. We spent two days but one can manage in half a day too. Parking is impossible so use public transit. There is a path to the mount Royal from the museum but it can get a little too much to pack in a day for some.
I love visiting local museums when I'm traveling, been to many in Europe and Asia, and this exhibition was one of the worse when it comes to communicating to its guest. I left not only feeling disappointed, but extremely frustrated when I learned after leaving from OTHER reviewers that there were underground passages that lead to adjacent buildings with more artwork. Apparently, I had completely missed out on 75% of the exhibition (which I hear is amazing!) because there was no map, signs or the staff to help inform. Even the exterior of the adjacent building was confusing, the doors were sealed shut as it was closed with no signs telling you to cross the street to enter. I paid $50 (for two people) at the front desk and was left to figure the rest out. Visiting their website, I also don’t see any map that I don’t have to dig for. To realize the extent the lack of communication is that we once stood in their dark elevator having to guess which floors would work because there were no signs to let guest know which ones are closed. Overall, I took time out of my schedule to visit this place as it was highly rated, but I left feeling dismissed. I don’t like writing bad reviews, but reading other low stars reviews - I think other guest have had the same experienced I did without realizing it (notes are saying the museum was small) – it’s warranted.
This is a place where you won't be regret of investing time.
Great place to visit. I went late morning, so it wasn't that busy, but as I left art 15:30 there was a lot of queue to get in. The Egyptian exhibition was great. There are some surprising pieces scattered all over the museum, no matter what your taste in art!
Pretty good exhibit for a tourist spot. Didn’t have as much as I expected but still an awesome experience.
Great free exhibit! Beautiful, thought provoking art. The permanent displays are the ones that are included without a fee. Easily accessible. Elevator for every floor, so stairs are optional, which is great for those with less mobility. The walls of windows by the staircases on every floor show sides of Montreal we don't take the time to stop and admire, not to mention the street art it happens to highlight. All in all a great experience.
The museum closes early so didn't go inside for such small amount of time ! Geez should be open till at least 7pm . So I checked out the srt sculptures around the building.????
Took my granddaughter and she loved it. So nice that kids are free.
If you are interested in the permanent collection, don't go right now as everything is closed. There is a Riopelle exhibit, which is good if you are interested in this particular artist, there is a small but high quality exhibit of Canadian art, and a small amount of contemporary art. I wish they had made clear on their website that the vast majority of the museum is closed because we wouldn't have bought tickets if we had known that. You can't see most of what is shown on the website, so the experience does not live up to what is advertised.
