Fun times, nice people, great sparkling wines and cider! Awesome dog!
Atmosphere, kid zone, and delicious.
From the outside, this winery looks like an old farmhouse, but we were delighted to walk into the tasting and dining room. It’s still rustic but has a modern hipster vibe. The food was good, we had the bread with melted cheese and honey with the shrimp rolls and chips. It was all delicious although the service was a little slow. We tried the ciders which were ok and frankly, quite expensive ($18/bottle).
We showed up at 4:15 on Tuesday Sept 25,2018. Dude told us to come back at 4:30pm cause they were closed. Came back at 4:45pm and they just looked at us through the window. Great customer service. Don’t bother, they don’t value their clientele! What a joke! Check out Hrange up the road, or trail estate!
The location was pretty. They have an oyster bar and peach bellinis (if that's your thing). The service was great as well, however the wines were underwhelming. Would only recommend if you're in the mood for oysters.
Thank you so much to the owner for the excellent tasting! I really recommand. Try everything but I had a crush for sparkling, Orange wine, L'imparfait red, and the Syrah (most like a St-Joseph Syrah than a N.-Z. one)! I appreciate taliking with the owner and all his knowledges.
Enjoyable. Lovely setting
Super friendly staff, great wine. Very nice rustic location! Awesome tasting area as well!
What a great place.. Owner & staff are great - so is their Labrador! The wines are unique - not many VQA champagne/proseco style wines (another is Lighthall). They are supposed to be serving oysters now!!
Great sparkling wine, awesome oyster. Highly recommend.
Some of the best sparkling VQA wine in Ontario. The tasting room is rustic - be sure to keep your eye out for the wine cellar cats. Have heard word that there's a fun new food component launching on site the summer of 2014.
I was really excited about visiting this winery, but my boyfriend and I must have picked the wrong time to come (Saturday mid-afternoon). The fact that it was super busy was a great sign (holy bridal parties!), however we never got to find out for ourselves as we left after waiting 15 minutes to be acknowledged at the bar. I understand that things can get hectic, but it would have been nice if one of the staff had actually said hello/they'd be with us in a minute/etc. Perhaps going during an off-peak time is best.
Friendly staff, with a nice backyard patio. Smaller wine selection so have a look at what they offer before arrival.
While I understand “these unprecedented times” are difficult for small businesses to navigate, there seemed to have been zero attempt by owners/employees to limit exposure and protect customers here. Sign: No dogs allowed on patio - dog roaming off leash, licking used glassware and server commenting, “how cute.” Sign: Entrance/Exit - unmasked patrons aimlessly wandering and infringing upon personal space. No Sign: Tasting Reservations Required due to Covid - lined up for 20 minutes before being advised of policy, however $10 glasses of wine are being served without a reservation.
Currently waiting at the bar to be served. It's been about 10-15 minutes and we have not been served. Super disappointing. Didn't end up getting a drink and eventually walked out unacknowledged. Too bad because the frosted drink looked really tasty.
Nice patio at back of barn overlooking the vineyard. Lovely.
Great place! Extremely enthusiastic and professional staff will tell you everything about sparkling wine!
A really great winery. Nice food and seating options too. Ambience is nice. Definitely worth stopping here when in PEC.
Good wines in a cool setting. Did the wine tasting which offered quite generous samples as compared to others.
Very good food. The food truck has some amazing collection of bbq food. You could also get oysters!!! The environment is friendly and nice.
This is a small winery with limited selections. The location and venue they have setup is really nice and beautiful. Neither myself or my fiancé were overly impressed by the wine we sampled and didn't decide to purchase any for the road. We both enjoyed their Peach Bellini and it was the highlight of our visit. As for the staff, we both feel they were trying to do their best but clearly looked under staffed to us. I'm not sure if they just weren't expecting a good amount of people on a Wednesday between 4pm - 5pm or if they always only go with two staff but they certainly could have used a third staff member to offer a better overall experience for customers. As mentioned though, the two ladies that working were friendly and polite but we're very busy.
Welcoming hostess and very efficient serving the number of patrons coming through. As others have pointed out this winery specializes in bubbly wines. Two white and 2 rose products. The product is very good and well worth a visit especially given it proximity to the County Road Brew Co.
Lots of sparking wines here. I recommend the Les etoiles and Rosè 2016 method traditional.
Very nice place, with a covered terrace outside for rainy days. Great staff and delicious food! Try the Peach Slushy Bellini, very refreshing.
Awful experience, the sparkling are not that great. The staff is ridiculous so are the wines. They are not nice and not customer friendly. The worst wine tasting experience of my life. They should change staff and make better wines....
We visited hinterland wine company on 18 oct. The tasting room was almost about to close, but this young lady was so warm and welcoming. She poured our wines with smile and explained each wine succinctly and beautifully. We were confused at one point and this young girl really made an effort to clear our doubts. We roamed around the place and clicked couple of photos. We tasted three wines & also took one bottle for the keepsakes. Also, special mention to the owner lady, we needed to change for our baby and she really opened the tasting room so we could use the washroom well long after the closing hours. Awesome hospitality, and would recommend this place 10/10. Cheers.
This is a wonderful place. The sparkling wine is fantastic, the food is amazing (great oysters), and the service is above and beyond. I cannot say enough good things about Hinterland. Great job guys!
Such a lovely place, definitely one of the most beautiful sites in PEC. Nice variety of wine with some pretty good bubbly ones. I hear the food is great though we got there too late to have any. Would definitely come back!
Had a great wine tasting here, tried 3 samples of wines, all were delicious. Also had the Peach Bellini which was fresh and tasty.
Went here on New Years Eve for a tasting. Their Ancestral is to die for!
Beer, champagne, oysters... What can go wrong?
Beautiful location. Tasting flights are a really great way to sample their products. Very friendly and approachable staff. Dog-friendly (dogs can sit and enjoy the vineyard views while you sip on bubbly). Oysters are a great addition to the tasting experience. Really wonderful way to end your PEC wine tour.
Great wine and very friendly owners!
Came for a flight of beers. Delicious. Friendly staff. Great experience.
This was our favourite stop out of 4! The sparkling wine was amazing and there's lots of seating to relax and hangout with your friends. Deanna was so friendly and made us feel very welcome. She made great conversation and overall made our experience so fun! Thanks Deanna!
Best sparkling wine in the county by far! I come back almost every year for it. The staff and the owners are personable and fun to talk to.
Delicious sparkling wines, great outdoor area for tastings.
Such a great spot! Staff are all very friendly and proffesional. The menu is simple, but very well executed. Our server Katie was exceptional and the space is very kid friendly. We've found our new Saturday spot! Please stay open all year!
The tastings are more expensive for groups over 6, which seemed a bit odd. I guess they’re just trying to discourage larger groups from going here. Despite the place being pretty quiet, we weren’t made to feel particularly welcome by the woman serving us. This is a big contrast to the other smaller wineries we’d visited through the day. The wine was nice, but the experience was lacking.
Not a lot of explanations on the products
Great food, nice owners, and their beer and wine products are top notch! Definitely recommend a visit!
A County institution. Every trip includes a stop at Hinterland for some elegant sparkling wine.
Delish Charmant style bubbly. Had the tasting and a Pinot Noir (well maybe two ).
Wine tasting was good. Nice and cold. Scenery was nice. Portion sizes were a little small. I wish you were able to take the wine tasting glasses down to the vineyard.
Super glad I took my famiy to Hinterland on our wine tour! The staff are very friendly and helpful and the surroundings are beautiful and very cozy. It was also my favorite Pinot Noir of the day!!!
Love this place! Les Etoiles sparkling wine was phenomenal. I bought a bottle, but should have bought a case. Everyone was fun and educational. Can't wait to get back!
I used to enjoy going to this place years ago when they first opened but things have changed. Staff behind the bar seem more interested in chatting with their friends or looking at their cell phones than serving customers. Ciders are below average. The Borealis wine is pretty good. There are friendlier and more welcoming winery’s in the county to spend your money at than this hipster spot.
Not much to see at this place. Scenary wasn't spectacular and neither was the service. We were on an adventure tour and this was a spot that was recommended. Not sure why. Couldn't do a tasting because you had to have a reservation. The guy that we spoke to lacked customer service. We ordered a peach bellini (which was supposed to be a frozen, slushy drink and mine came out like a cold drink not slushy at all) and a glass of Pinot Noir 2019 ($13.00 for that glass *wow*). We took our drinks to sit at a picnic table to look at the dismal field. Messy area outside to sit and nothing enjoyable to stare at. Not once did anyone come to see how we were doing. Inside looked cool and the area for tasting look nice too. Unfortunately, we were truly unimpressed with this winery.
Great sparkling wine and lots of places to sit and explore. There was only one server so it felt a little chaotic, but she did a great job! They had a hen pen which was very cute.
Good food and tasty cider, but service at the counter could be better. Difficult to get the attention of the servers.
If you enjoy sparkling wines you have to stop here
A must visit. The best sparkling wine producer in the county and Ontario. They have a wide range of sparkling but also still (red and white) wines. From off dry / sweeter styles to bone dry traditional method sparkling wine. Nice range of price points which is nice for the county. Definitely try the sparkling wine that they are famous for but also ask for their still wines which usually include Chardonnay, Syrah and then fun new blends made with the chef /co-owner of Joe Beef. Dog friendly and spacious.
Came here and tried their Chardonnay and Syrah. Very underwhelming and they source their grapes from Niagara. I first spotted cork in the Chardonnay and informed the woman at the counter. She simply said “it happens once in a while” without apologizing or doing anything else. THEN - we found there’s actually a bug in the wine. We returned it of course and the woman at the counter didn’t say anything. We decided the wines were not impressive at all, so we offered to just pay for the tasting. The woman at the counter still tried to charge us for the Chardonnay with cork and bug, and I asked her to waive the fee. She said she can’t, and she said we were being rude. She almost threw the card machine at us. We have visit countless wineries and have never been treated like this. The owner here should really consider what kind of people they want to hire and who can represent their winery. It’s nice that they donate $1 to terry fox foundation for each of their tasting, but considering the quality of their wine, $3 per tasting is really not worth it.
Super trendy.. targeting the hipster crowd. Not as popular as Trail Estate down the road for the same group. The sparkling wines are tank fermented and on the sharp side.
The sparkling wine was very good! The interior decorations were impressive! Specifically, Deanna was so friendly and made us feel so special by serving us at our table anytime we needed a sampling!
The front is misleading as the tasting area behind is beautiful! Sweeter sparkling wines. Peach Bellinis were the height of our tour!
Excellent sparkling and crémant wines. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable - really great spot, beautiful views of the vineyards Recommended if you are driving around PEC
For the last few years I’ve had Hinterland’s sparkling wine at various restaurants. I was so excited to visit their winery in person. Their grounds are beautiful. We went on a Monday in the summer, so it was hot but not overcrowded. Most wineries in the area do flights but not cocktails. I was so happy that they had a frozen peach Bellini using their sparkling wine, it was insane!! We drank our drinks while sitting in their muskoka chairs, it was perfect.
Friendly staff and good fod
(Translated) Very good sparkling wines! Small fine bubbles! Delicious (Original) Très bons vins mousseux! Petites bulles fines! Délicieux
What an amazing vineyard (where is producing exclusively Bubbles) and microbrewery. As the location, in middle of the wines, everything is perfect. The beauty of the place merged with the kindness of the staff with a special mention to Evan and Rachael who welcomes us to tasting beer and bubbles. Their sensitive charms drive us to fall in love with this peacefully lifetime and awesome beers and bubbles (Method Whitecap 2016 Charmat was my favorite one) with very good food.
If you're looking for a winery with something different, try Hinterland. Their wines all sparkle, literally and figuratively. The County Road Brewery, also on site, is a good place to stop for snacks during your wine tour.
Great atmosphere and products!
Fantastic food! Souvlaki is delightful
Superb products, both the sparkling wine and the beer, back for seconds today.
(Translated) Good sparkling rosé and white more beers for 3 years so outdated site .. (Original) Bon rosé et blanc pétillants plus de bières depuis 3ans donc site pas à jour ..
Had a quick rest stop from driving. Such beautiful place and lovely refreshing and crisp wine. Had a Bellini and Borealis rose. Both were lovely.
It was amazing to visit this incredible vineyard. Jonas brought a fantastic bottle of sparkling wine, it really should be called champagne. But the French may have a problem with that. Anyway great experience and it was so nice to see this young wine maker in his paradise. Thanks again Max and Wanda
beautiful place, fantastic food, affordable, lovely restaurant overlooking vineyard. Chef is wondetful- and try the charcuterie!!! Exceptional bubbly- Ancestral is my favorite.
The best sparkling wine in Canada!!!
I understand the COVID -19 has drastically changed how businesses are able operate, however this is the worst expression of customer service and tasting experience I have seen thus far. I would encourage staff to look to the examples of other wineries operating in the area. We arrived with a group of 6 of us with a reservation. Then asked to pay (~$12, one of the most expensive in the area) and tip up front. Afterwards, we were told to come up to the bar for our tasting, where each of us had 4 plastic cups pre-poured and a placemat. Not one single staff member acknowledged us, no explanation nor hello. Instead, we stared at a blank wall for the entire tasting. Meanwhile, on the second bar a gentleman (who I assume was the winemaker) was hosting two gentleman followed by another group giving them the entire works, real glasses, samples across the portfolio. I understand that these are likely VIP guests, however as someone who works in the industry there are much better work arounds. Still unclear what/who my tip was going to. As for the wines, of the 4 you sample, one is not even wine its cider and they are the cheapest options. 1 cider, 2 Charmat method (like a Prosecco) and Ancestral method (this is the only one slightly interesting and who love to have had some details). All other options (traditional and reds) those which I was actually interested in perhaps purchasing were by the bottle only, no samples or glasses. Would love to have purchased several bottles (we bought a traditional to sample amongst ourselves, this was pretty good) but unfortunately the experience was quite frankly the worst I've seen both within Canada and internationally. Frankly, I would not recommend, visiting. Save yourself the time, there are much better sparkling producers in Canada and much better experiences in the county!
Nice back patio to enjoy a glass of their many choices of wines. The cherry cider is refreshing as is the rose! ????????
Great outdoor seating... The Whitecap by the bottle with plant based biodegradable glasses was a great touch. Nice unrushed space.
I discovered Hinterland at the suggestion of a host at Norman Hardie, in 2010. The directions were accurate, but I actually drove by as the sign was small and the former converted cow barn certainly didn't look like a winery! I was served by Jonah himself and sampled two of the still wines as well as the Rosé and Les Étoiles. (Hinterland no longer produces still wines; they are solely focused on sparkling wines.) To say I was gobsmacked is putting it mildly. I'm not a connoisseur of sparkling wines, not nearly as knowledgeable as many. However, I do have a decent palate for wines. The first thing that struck me about both wines was the amount of mousse. The pours were pretty generous, and in both cases the bubbles filled half the glass. And those bubbles were small and compact, an indication of a good sparkling wine. I ended up buying a bottle of Les Étoiles and two Rosé. I wish I could have afforded more, but one has to leave budget for other County wines and delectables, eh? I didn't get to Hinterland in 2011, but vow to return this summer, just in time for the new release of Les Étoiles. Combined with County Cider and Half Moon Bay, not to mention several other County wineries, I am spending more of my budget there and less in NIagara. Such choices are just so difficult. ☺
A relatively small winery with average wines. The person serving my family and I gave us very curt responses when pouring our wines, so the experience was again maybe average at best. Didn’t end up buying any bottles. The best part was the beautiful garden & vineyards outside and some of the staff which were super friendly when I accidentally broke a glass.
Great atmosphere and excellent wine! Service was amazing!
Love this place. French champagne is over rated. Support local products. These guys turn out some damn fine sparkling wine. I am particularly fond of the Ancestral and the Les Etoiles. The staff are fantastic. They are always helpful when talking about their products.
Delicious bubbly. Hip spot
It might be a good place for the view in summer, but the wine is not the best sample the area has to offer, at least for me and my visiting friend. Small tasting selection (5) and only sparkling wine, which was not my expectation. Nevertheless, the welcome is very friendly and pleasant, as could be the landscape. If you are a fizzy wine lover, this would be the place for you.
A beautiful spot! There wasn't an overly large selection of wines when I was there but what we did taste was awesome! The Borealis Rose was my personal fave, enough to buy a bottle. Definitely recommend stopping in on your wine tasting cruise.
Enjoyed my time at Hinterland yesterday. The wine was ok, but the peach bellini was delicious
So crowded with customers - I felt like a sheep being herded.
Great place, we came for a tasting, loved the wine, loved the view, staff were great
Great sparkling wine in a beautiful country setting.
Favorite stop in PEC wine/beer tour. The beer garden is great, including the huge pieces of fried Ontario pickerel. Staff were excellent, brewmaster was happy to chat about his recipes, lots of interesting brews to try. Beer garden looks out into the vineyard. Don't miss this place!
Wine was mediocre, service was even worse. The venue was kind of nice though. Would have given 0 stars if it was possible given the passive aggressive service.
You can never have enough Whitecap on hand. Thanks
Be aware they don't give itemized receipts. if you come with a big group good luck with splitting the bill.
Hinterland makes amazing bubbly and fabulous cider. The best winery so far
Great atmosphere. Very tasty sparkling wines. Lovely space.
Stopped in to get some bubbly and enjoyed trying their other wines.
(Translated) We liked, simplistic vineyard, but pleasant atmosphere. The sparkling wines were good (Original) On a aimé, vignoble simpliste, mais ambiance agréable. Les mousseux étaient bons
Awesome place for wine , beer, or food
Chip and onion were great Peach Bellini was amazing Good selection of wine and cider
Great service. Good wines. Ciders for the cider lovers. Going again tnrw bicycle ride there from the bnb lavender farm was great.
It was a little too busy for my liking but thats PEC! We had a couple samples of nice sparkling and the views were lovely.
When we arrived to eat, someone took our name and said it would be about 15 minutes. So we had some tasters in the tasting Area. Their saving grace is that their wines are fabulous because the service was sub par. The staff were clearly overwhelemed even though I'm sure they are that busy every Saturday and it didn't help that they were rude. On more than one occasion we were told abraisivly to wait a minute for our tasters. They didn't even talk to us or say anything about the wines, the process, the history. Very commercial! I tried to say thank you for my taster and she had already left! Finally after waiting almost 30 minutes we bought our wine and left without eating. Later on we met a couple who said the food was small for the price and mediocre. They had a similar experience to ours however they had decided to wait. We chose a pizza place 10 minutes away and were thrilled! As for wine, nothing was quite like Les Étoiles, The Borealis and their Winterland. Price point for their unique, quality wines was also the best. We did return on Sunday for a bottle of 2 and I would give the food a try on another occasion.

Fantastic sparkling wine from PEC.
A nice place for sparkling wine. My husband likes his wine off dry so we tried the Borealis and Ancestral. They were both very tasty. We bought a bottle of Ancestral. The tasting area is very nice - lots of seating in shade or sun. They have food too. They didn't have the item we were asked for but we were brought some very tasty salmon just because they felt badly about it - it was very nice (and delicious!).
We were here for a bachelorette and everything was fantastic. Themi (Ryan) was a great host and all wines and both ciders were delicious. Thank you so much for the hospitality.
I took some friends here on Saturday and was very disappointed in the service. There were 4 people serving and we first went to one woman for our tastings. She was unfriendly, verging on hostile. No smile cracked her face at any point of the transaction. We got 1 full tasting (5 wines) and 2 extra of the Borealis and the Ancestral. The Borealis was warm and flat. Keep in mind, we paid for these, they weren't free! So when we went up to get a glass of wine after our tasting we tried a different server - same miserable reception. I asked for the Borealis and if it was possible to have one that was chilled and not flat, explaining that the taste we had was warm and flat. No apology. No "sorry about that, I'll see if we have a bottle that's cold - we've been sooo busy" Just a very terse "we're doing our best" - honey, if that's your best, you should try a different profession. Then after I ordered she walked away while my friend stood there having not been served. WE flagged her back and he asked to order and she said flatly "I thought you didn't want anything" - why she would think that when she hadn't asked if he wanted anything is a mystery but we said "no problem, sorry for the confusion" - why were we apologizing and she wasn't? Based on this very disappointing experience, none of us will return.
The best presentation for wine tasting in the county. Love the set up outside. Gorgeous. Plus they have eco biodegradable cups!
Great experience great food and nice beers
Fantastic!!!
So good! Honestly David blane could have shown up and it wouldn't of made this place any better for me. I got home and I realized I had no socks because they were blown off into the stratosphere. Great work hinterland, love you.
So friendly and knowledgeable! The staff went above and beyond to help us understand the process behind their wines!
Delicious wine. Great service. Enjoyed the atmosphere.
Was out for their brewery opening. Nothing cosmic going on, but they are producing decent craft beers and the staff seemed passionate. I would skip having the charcuterie plates next time.
Great place! Their sparkling wines are a must have! Very friendly owners and staff. Had a great time!
Great and knowledgeable owners, great wine ! Thank you Vicki and Jonas!
Wonderful winery and great hospitality!
A regular spot for us (and many), one of the best spots in the county. Great bubbles, unique and refreshing. A must-add to your touring spots ;)
Beautiful winery with awesome large tasting room that flows inside to outside during the summer. There is also a gazebo outside and grass area to hang out on. They have great sparkling wines and rosees
They make some of the best sparking wine in Canada in both traditional and charmat method. The whitecap is a classic and if you are lucky enough to get a traditional method Rose you are in for a treat. They have excellent food available and lots of outdoor seating for tastings and snacks. This place is an essential visit on a PEC wine tour.
A relatively large establishment serving bubbles. It was good to charge one by one than a flight of three. Personnel were nice. Enjoyed sitting in front of the vineyard and took a sip from the glasses.
Such friendly people and welcoming place with lots of space to sit down and dogs walking around lots of farm areas with the sparkling wine really tasty. A must stop in PEC.
The sparkling wine was nice. Rustic experience. Recommended
The sparkling wines were good, but the apple left something to be desired. There is little to be seen at the winery, but the new bar area that is part of the new brewery is going to be nice once it is completed.
Great place to visit! Can order by the glass or bottle and sit on the patio. Will re-cork your bottle if it’s unfinished. Also have some chickens to look at and allow dogs on the patio. Nice staff, great experience overall, would definitely recommend and will be back again!
Fantastic food and wine
I was drop by this place. The sparkling wine tastes fine. To my surprise they charged $10.45 for one third of a small plastic cup of wine. Maybe just go LCBO buy a bottle for around 20 bucks would be worth the money.
