Lonnnnnnnnnnng story with a great ending!
After a fantastic stay in Tofino last week, we were heading home when the dashboard started lighting up. We pulled over as it felt like we were about to stall. Our van was unable to sustain a charge when we attempted to start the van. We had just passed through the Kennedy Hill major highway upgrade work being done which was about to close from 11am to 3pm. We had no cellular service and the nearest town was Port Alberni about an hour east from us. Fortunately we were travelling with friends in a separate vehicle and they drove on until they could find cellular service which turned out to be about a half hour away. While waiting on the side of the road a woman, Cynthia, stopped and offered to take my wife and 3 kids to Port Alberni. Numerous people stopped to check to make sure I had help on the way. Several even offered food and water. So many wonderful people to thank!!! My friends returned a little over an hour later with some good news. A tow truck was coming from Port Alberni with an ETA of 130pm and although every garage they called could not fit our van in there schedule for next few days someone suggested ACE AUTOMOTIVE. They had called him and he sounded very positive. Told them to tow the van and he’d hv a look. He was expecting us to arrive before 3pm but the tow truck didn’t arrive at 130pm as expected. Our friends waited a while longer but eventually left to try and get an update. While I waited I started to think about our bikes and the bike rack, wondering if they would pose an issue for the tow truck being on the back end of the van. I decided to create space inside the van, managed to squeeze the bikes in along with the bike rack. Glad I did, the tow truck finally arrived 4+ hours later and the hitch bottomed out a bit so the rack and bikes wouldn’t hv made it worse.. I was relieved but pretty spent from being in the sun all that time. My friends noticed the tow truck with my van pass by and came back for me. It was about 430pm when we reached the area that had cell service. I called ACE AUTOMOTIVE. The gentleman I spoke with sounded exhausted. He said they close at 5pm and asked if I expected our van to be fixed today. It was a HUGE ask but we really needed to try and catch a ferry home so I wouldn’t miss work the next day. I told him he was my only hope but it was clear he had put in a long day and wanted to go home to relax. We arrived at his garage with our van being offloaded by the tow truck. I found the gentleman I spoke with and he looked like he had had a long day. I wouldn’t hv blamed him if he would hv insisted to come back the next day. Clearly he’s a good man with a BIG heart cuz he offered to come back after grabbing a little rest and something to eat. We came back at 7pm and he was working on our van. The alternator needed to be replaced. Just before 8pm, I heard the engine fire up. It sounded GREAT!’ He called me over, explained what he replaced and gave me details about the warranty. I was ever so grateful, nearly speechless, could not thank him enough. It only gets better…after a long day that I am certain he had he came back after hours to help a family he’s never met before. I’m expecting a hefty bill but instead he charges me $450 and change!!!! AMAZING! Absolutely the most honest hard working mechanic I hv ever and will ever meet! So much respect for him, I believe his name is Rick. He owns ACE AUTOMOTIVE in Port Alberni. If you are in the area and EVER need a mechanic do not hesitate, go see Rick at ACE AUTOMOTIVE.
