Halley was awesome. I went in for a septum piercing and was there for a total of 10 minutes. Halley was professional, fast, and thorough when discussing aftercare. She was helpful with a few questions I had about my other piercings, and so far it has been healing nicely. Will definitely be going back and would highly recommend.

I scouted out a bunch of places in downtown Ottawa before I went for Universal. My tat is small and not particularly challenging for the (delightful) artist who made it for me. It was in honour of my grandfather. I really enjoyed getting to know my artist, telling him the story of Opa. I'm sad I don't remember his name, but I remember he was from New Brunswick. As I live outside of Canada it was really like sharing a piece of home when we got to talking. I was very happy with the entire experience - extremely clean, excellent advice and professionalism, after-care was perfect and the service was everything it could and should have been. When I returned back 3 years later.. he still remembered me. I came for a bellybutton piercing and it was like coming home to visit an old friend. I highly recommend Universal, not just based on the reputation they've earned on their own, but by the memories I've made there and a staff who clearly cares to do things right.

Most disrespectful, rude staff. A few of my friends and I were looking for a place to get some small tattoos and there was two staff members there who got upset and told us to go f-ourselves because we asked for a deal and said that another shop had better deals. The two staff members got upset and automatically started being frustrated and telling us to go and find somewhere else to get them done. Also one of the main artists that have a station in the front pretty much looks like a miserable man. I would never go back there, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I've gotten plently of piercings here and they're very reliable and clean. However I just recently got my first tattoo done here and when I went to see if they could do it sooner. The guy at the desk was really rude towards me. He asked me if I knew the name of my tattoo artist and I said no. And he replied "well that totally helps a lot" in a sarcastic tone. That put me off cause they're usually quite friendly and no one had told me the name of my tattoo artist. He then asked for my name and I gave it to him. He said he doesn't see my name anywhere for the scheduled appointment. I was really frustrated because when I booked my appointment I pre paid $40. And that guy seemed like he was trying to jiff me off. Luckily I still had the receit so I pulled it out and gave it to him. He then rescheduled my appointment for the exact date and time...it's a good thing I went back cause then I probably wouldn't have gotten it done at the time I had scheduled...When I did go back they were really nice and helpful. Honestly I have mixed feelings about this place...

I never leave reviews but felt compelled to write one today. I went in to get my stud nose piercing changed to a ring. The person who did it was Tim & he was the nicest piercer I’ve ever come across. He reassured me & was really gentle because my piercing was kinda hard to come out. Also, the lady at the reception was so sweet. Would recommend this place to anyone I know.

Tim gave me my first ever cartilage piercing (conch) and he made it as relaxing and pain free as a piercing could possibly be. I was made to feel welcome and he was very thorough, making sure he knew exactly what I wanted. If I decide to do the other ear I will be returning, even though it's a couple hours away. Worth the drive!

Love this place! I've got all of my tattoos done here so far, as well as some of my piercings. Ferg just did this one for me last month and she did an amazing job (@theferg_tattoos on Instagram). It's super delicate with fine lines, and it healed flawlessly. Ferg also did a super job at making me feel calm and distracting me from the pain (although the pain did not last long) while I was getting the tattoo and I'm very grateful for that! Highly recommend :)

Brad did 4 tattoos on me throughout 2018 and it was never anything but an entirely pleasant experience. He does crisp line work and has a very gentle touch. Next to his talent, his bedside manner is spectacular. Each time he tattoos me, he makes it a point to periodically ask how I’m doing. I’m not a fainter, but some people most definitely are, and he cares!! He always does everything he can to make sure you’re getting exactly what you want. If he does tweak anything, it’s only to make it better than it was before!

I came here for my very first piercing (on the lobes) and was quite satisfied. I went in on a weekday, walked in, and was able to get it done right away. The receptionist was very nice. They have separate rooms for tattooing and piercing where the piercing room was clean. Halley was my piercer and was very quick, smooth, and gentle (they use needles, no piercing guns, hooray!). It really didn't hurt that much. Their aftercare instructions are very thorough. With my new cleaning routine, it's been three weeks and my piercings are looking & feeling good so far. Overall, I had a very good experience! Thank you!

I went to have a second pierce in my nose and it was THE WORST thing ever! She poked me a total of 3 times and attempts to insert the ring each time. Which was insanely painful. She’s must be new because there is NO WAY this lady has done it before.. Now i mentioned it is my second pierce because i had a very smooth painless experience first time i did it thats why i think she’s new! Def not recommending this place to others!

I don't the words can justify how fantastic this place is. From answering countless questions about piercings and tattoos they have done it all. The staff are very welcoming and enjoy what they do. I have gotten 3 tattoos here and about 14 piercings here and I will constantly return to them. If you're nervous about a piercing or tattoo or have a boat load of questions then this is definitely the place for you. Want someone who will take the time to go over your design and make sure it is exactly what you want, these are your people. I recommend this place to everyone.

Today a couple of friends and myself decided to get some piercings. Personally I am typically terrified of needles but the entire experience was very settling, the lobes didn't hurt at all just a small pinch and the conch was a bit painful as expected because it is cartilage. After the piercings were done I was a bit lightheaded and I ended up fainting but the staff working were so unbelievably kind and helpful. They ensured that I was safe, feeling well and that I was comfortable as I waited for my parents to come and get me. I would recommend anyone looking for a safe piercing place to come here I will definitely be back in the future. I am so pleased with my piercings and the staff made me feel very welcomed. (the other customers in the store were also absolutely amazing and kind) It was overall an amazing experience and I am so grateful that I choose to go to Universal!

Unfortunately I can't have a positive review of this place. I went here to buy a nose piercing - with my old one in hand. He asked my size, and I told him I wasn't aware but had brought my old jewelry to show him. He sent me home with a ring that cost 18 odd dollars - very affordable. I was having trouble getting it in and visited a few times to explain to them I thought it must be too big - I could get studs and my former ring in but not this new piece. After bringing it back in to them they concluded it was too big and was mis-sold to me, but they could offer neither an exchange for another ring in store (as they had none in what IS my size apparently...) nor offer a refund. My s/o just went to get his nose pierced here and it has now come out twice and required a painful repiercing of a raw wound on both occasions. You'd hope when they realize it wasn't stable enough the first time, they'd be a bit more careful so it wouldn't happen again a week later... Just nothing but bad experiences. I'm not sure if we're just the victims of bad luck as many reviews seem positive, but I've only felt a complete lack of customer care. UPDATE: 1 day after my S/O's SECOND repiercing. This time he woke up with the stud so packed into the pierced hole it was invisible. Something ridiculously wrong with their methods here.

My sister and I got matching anchor tattoos from Darin yesterday. He was absolutely hilarious and charismatic and did a really great job at keeping me calm (first tattoo). I'd go back again just to listen to him talk hahah. I was amazed at how steady his hand was when he was doing my sister's anchor and the finished products look great! He definitely knows his stuff and suggested a shift in the placement my sister had originally chosen for her tattoo that ended up looking a million times better than if she had got it where she originally wanted it. The studio was very clean as well. I'd definitely recommend this place.

There have been a lot of recent reviews that say Tim is very rough when piercing and that cannot be farther from the truth. I ONLY go to Tim for my piercings because he is meticulous and re-adjusts piercing placements on where you’d like them to be based on the anatomy of your ears. As for the piercing itself, he makes sure to countdown, and prepare you for the pinch you feel and makes sure you’re okay before and during and after the entire experience. Tim is amazing, I’ve recommend him to all my friends and they agree, he is polite, professional and caring towards his clients.

I loved it here, never been here for a piercing before. They were super nice about me being a little late because I forgot my ID in the car. Everyone I met was so kind and professional. Tim did an amazing job on my nose piercing, was in and out in less then 10 minutes. If you prefer the piercer to just get it over and done with, Tim is the guy to go for that, he doesn’t count down, just let’s you know when he’s about to stick the needle in. Highly recommend.

I've been going to Darin for my tattoos since my first. Always honest, friendly, and professional. In my experience the staff does not respond well to belligerent customers, so be ready, know what you want and where you want it, and understand if they say it needs to be bigger it's so the tattoo looks good, not so they can charge you more.

I would definitely recommend this place if you are looking to get a larger and more intricate tattoo done. I got my first tattoo done here two years ago, and I am still absolutely in love with it. Sunil did my back-piece, and I am amazed at how well he did it. My tattoo is my family member's names, in a circle, in Cyrillic lettering. It is a difficult tattoo because it must be absolutely precise, or the whole thing just looks like garbage. Yes, Universal Tattoo is slightly more pricey than other places, but my tattoo was definitely worth the $340. However, I do find the staff here to be kind of rude and unfriendly. I do not like dealing with them, hence I have set out to find a new tattoo shop. I got my belly-button pierced here, however, it was rejected six months later. Every piercer that sees my scar says that my belly button was pierced incorrectly.

Absolutely great! I got a helix and a rook piercing from Halley and she was really nice, clean and got the piercing done very well and quickly with little pain. Some people say Universal is over priced, but this is to have quality and sterilized equipment that is the safest overall, and they currently have the 20$ off any two piercings (studs or barbells) to celebrate their 20th year so that was well worth it. I don't regret spending a good amount of money because my piercings are super clean.

Friendly staff and clean shop, but I went to get a helix piercing and was given a barbell that was much too small and didn't allow room for swelling. I had to switch it out for a longer bar after a while because it was really painful.

They also fought me on what I wanted, ended up moving it near my elbow and the Damn thing isn’t even straight, but the best part is they over priced it by at least $100. I've been tattooed by Dave in the past and found him to be negative. I assumed it was just because of a bad day which can happen to anyone. I came in again recently to see if he could do a walk-in appointment for me. Not only did he mock my idea and refuse to do it, but rather than offer suggestions to modify the design he used rude and aggressive language and I felt embarrassed. Also, the way he was speaking to the counter girl was extremely abusive. I've always found her to be pleasant and professional person and I'm sad she has to put up with behaviour like that. I've always heard from others and believed Universal to be a reputable shop, but I won't feel comfortable getting tattooed there if I have to experience the level of rudeness and negativity I saw from Dave.

Just got by 4th tattoo done by Brad at Universal and each time he has done amazing work!! He is great at what he does, helps with design and placement and is just a cool guy all around. Maggie is an absolute sweetheart too, and is not only very welcoming but very helpful as well. They have also been very accommodating as I have just walked in most times and haven't had to wait. My first visit was an impromptu walk-in on a first date just before closing and they squeezed us in. I can't recommend Universal enough. They are amazing. Awesome experience. The person who answered the phone when I called to make an appointment was super polite - then we got there and the person who was behind the counter was on the phone, but another person popped out from the back and asked us (in a super friendly way) if they could help us - by that time, the person who was behind the counter was done on the phone and jumped in. I went here over a year ago to get my ear pierced, the staff was very friendly! The guy at the front counter helped me choose what type of jewelry I would want to wear, and gave us all the information we would need. My piercer was Kate, she talked me through the whole procedure, she was informative,friendly,and funny. Excellent work quality! I've had it for almost 3 years and never once have I gotten an infection. The whole place was clean, and brightly lit. I plan on going back this year for another piercing!

Went to Universal for my first tattoo, and was so impressed by how patient and helpful they were throughout the process. I saw Ian, who made sure the design was exactly what I wanted in addition to providing ideas to make it flow better. I could tell he was extremely passionate about his work, and I'm stoked with how it turned out. I went in for a touch up a few months later and asked to add a couple small things, and Ian went above and beyond to make it look better than I could have imagined. Couldn't be happier with my experience at Universal - highly recommend!

The only reason I’d go back to this shop is to get tattooed by either Brad or Darin. And if piercings were my thing, Halley. They’re also the only reason I am giving 2 stars instead of 1 star. I have gone to the shop several times with my daughter and so I have been present for and seen a number of off-putting things. A somewhat trivial, but still noticeable, thing is it looks as though their floors haven’t been replaced since they opened in the 90’s. There are chunks out of some areas of it and though I am sure it’s washed at least once a week, it still looks filthy. So it makes me wonder what other faulty things there may be that they have neglected to take care of. Something I feel that is more important than that is that there is one artist there, I am unsure of his name but he is a darker-skinned fellow, that treats the receptionist like garbage. Seems the smallest thing sets him in a rage and I wouldn’t want someone that temperamental tattooing me. And it’s just disrespectful to treat the receptionist that way when she is only doing her job. Worse then that though I have actually witnessed this same artist giving major lip to a client. That, to me, would be grounds for dismissal if I were the boss of this establishment. I don’t know how this shop has managed to remain in business for as long as it has. Please, do your research, folks before choosing which shop to go to for work. That all being said, if you do choose universal, please be patient with the poor woman at the desk. In my times there it appears as though she’s juggling a dozen things at once. And if they say, whether it’s the receptionist or the artist, that your tattoo has to be a certain size - rest assured they are just trying to make sure you get the best tattoo. They’re not trying to scam you into pulling out your pockets. They’re the professionals, not you.

I had two dermal implants removed. It was not an easy task. But the artist (didnt get his name) removing them was patient and pleasant and did everything he could to get them our very neat to reduce the possibility of scarring. I appreciated him for that!

I have gotten majority of my work done at Universal by Ian. I can't say enough about how amazing he is as an artist and person. always open to the ideas that I had, and created some unbelievable work. a true master of his craft. he did an upper sleeve, a full sleeve, and most recently a full chest/trapp piece that I couldn't be happier with. staff at shop is always very friendly and hospitable when I went for my appointments. Thanks Ian for all the work you've done for me, people still stop me and ask me daily who did tattoos!!!!

Not very impressed with this shop at all. A few months back, my friend and I went in for a walk-in tattoo. We were getting a tattoo for the first time and the artists were well aware of this. They ended up over charging us & told us we had to make the tattoo bigger even though other artists from a different shop told us that the size could have in fact been smaller considering where they were placed and how basic/plain the design was. I would not really consider this shop for first timers at all.

I went here over a year ago to get my nose pierced and the people were extremely friendly and professional. It was also my fastest healing piercing yet and I am extremely pleased with it. The only downside is that I found their prices a bit on the high side.

He is not only meticulous with his work but has a gentle touch.... He is also one of the nicest guys I've ever met... I would recommend him to absolutely anyone... I will never go to another tattoo shop other than Universal.... They're the best!!!

Have half a sleeve right now, all done by Ian Rose, and his creativity and tattooing ability is unlike anything I've ever seen. He works fast and is not expensive! Tim pierced my nose for me today. He went through the basics of what would happen prior to beginning, showed me all his instruments that were autoclaved in between clients, pierced the nose with minimal discomfort, gave me aftercare instructions & a sheet to take home & made it clear should I have any questions or concerns that I can reach out to him. I drove an hour one way to have him pierce my nose as his reputation precedes him & it was well worth it. I’d definitely recommend his assistance w your next piercing.

My tattoo artist (Darren) lied to me and told me my half sleeve was a custom tattoo... found out a friend I went to high school with has the exact same half sleeve as I do and she got hers 2 years before I did with the same artist. Also made me wait till the morning of to find out a price and kept telling me he's taking so long to draw my tattoo because it's custom. Didn't see the finished results until I got to the shop. Paid $600 for a non custom tattoo that a lot more people have. Pretty pissed.

I had my tattoo with Brad a few weeks ago, although I’m mostly happy with the tattoo I feel as if he based the tattoo more on how he wanted it to look rather than discussing it with me, especially with the shading - which even in some parts of the tattoo is out of the lines... I had colour on my tattoo and after a few weeks have passed it’s clear to see that the tattoo was not filled it properly. I wouldn’t normally leave a negative review unless it was necessary, but given the fact Brad has decided to ignore my messages regarding his mistakes and the healing of my tattoo, I feel that this is the best course of action. I was looking for advise and clarity regarding the tattoo, however it’s clear that Brad is more interested in quick sales instead of producing good quality tattoos. The tattoo almost felt rushed through, as if he was trying to get it done as quick as possible. Overall, I feel he was extremely unprofessional and I can only recommend avoiding him.

I wanted to share the great experience I had in getting my tattoo this weekend. Ian was my artist. He was very helpful and professional. We had a consultation for my custom piece prior to my tattoo appointment to make sure I was happy with the design and placement. His design went far beyond my expectations and my imagination. His application of the tattoo was precise and exceptionally well executed. I am so happy with it, I cant stop looking at it. My husband and I have had other tattoos by Ian and they have also been amazing and stood up to the test of time. I cant say enough good things about Ian's work, other than I cant wait to start dreaming about my next piece and I know Ian will take it to the next level and give me something better than I can imagine.

I came here for a tattoo about 4 years ago and the staff were immediately rude and seemed annoyed every time I had a question. Whoever was working the front said "my guy will do your tattoo" and never gave me the name of the guy doing it. Every time I asked what his name was the subject was changed for some reason. After my tattoo healed it looked extremely patchy and uneven. I went to get it touched up today with an artist I like and she mentioned that it would be harder than usual to touch up because whoever did the tattoo was too heavy handed and scarred my skin which is why the tattoo was so warped and patchy, meaning she had to try to tattoo over scar tissue. Definitely do not recommend going here, it was an unpleasant experience the entire way through and I'm shocked at low the standards were compared to the shops I've been to since.

If I could give 0 stars, I would. My friend came in for a basic leaf design and Dave couldn’t even draw a straight line. After waiting a month for it to heal, we went back for a ‘free’ touch up - which is clearly stated in their store policy. Dave refused to fix the tattoo, claiming there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. He obviously did not want to admit that he messed up. Instead of apologizing he told my friend “you can stare at me all you want, but I’m not going to fix it.” A+ customer service right there! He then stormed into the back of the shop without finishing the conversation. My advice, go somewhere else. ANYWHERE ELSE.

Had a great first tattoo experience at Universal with Dave. Came in with a couple friends and they were able to get us in only two hours later (which was great seeing as modifications needed to be made to the design one of my friends brought in). Maggie who works at reception was so lovely and put me right at ease with the whole process, and even came to the back to see how our tattoos looked while we were getting them done. Very sweet person who is great at her job. Also very happy with the job that Dave did for all of us, he was super professional and funny and definitely a talent. Some of the negative reviews on here are misleading, so I should clear them up based on my own experience. There is a sign right at the front counter that says "cash only", and you are told straight away by staff that it's cash only, so it should come as no surprise. The shop is right on Rideau and super close to several banks and bank ATMs that you can find in the Rideau Centre, it's easy enough to grab the cash within minutes. If you think it's silly that it's cash only, remember it's their shop and their policy. Some reviews also say that Universal is expensive, but quality comes with a cost, and an $80 minimum to cover the costs of the tools needed to tattoo you is a great deal. I was only charged the minimum ($80, plus tax and I tipped) for my tattoo, which is no bigger than a toonie, and left happy knowing it was a quality, hygienic job. Also, my friend was quoted $300 for her tattoo at another shop, but I believe paid $170 for hers at Universal, and was very happy with that. Will definitely be back in the future based on how great my first experience was!

I went to get a (purportedly free) touch up and was given the run around for a month, so that enough time passed and it was too late for me to get my free touch-up. completely deliberate and unprofessional on their part. I went last night at 9pm for a quick tattoo with my friend. They were 2 people at the front desk, one being trained.... No prob! But.... they charged me and my friend 140$ each for a tattoo that took 25min to do. That being said, we asked the artist what was his hourly rate, told us it was 100$/h..... simple math doesn’t add up here. They request that you only pay cash. The front desk obviously pocketed a good share of the money in there pockets! The artist had no clue that we were being charged this much since I asked him his hourly rate. Thieves, unprofessional I tell you.... That being said, I have great things to say about the artist himself! The gentlemen was from MTL. Very delicate, great costumer services, great skills.... overall love the guy. Awesome artist! If I would go back, it would only be because of him!

Terrible service. Put down $60 so they knew I really wanted this tattoo and after me having to remind them about me and my tattoo drawing they said come back in 2 days. After those 2 days I went back in, they took all my ideas and slapped them on a piece of paper. No flow just objects in the 4 corners and one in the center of the page. They then claimed, "this doesn't flow". To me that is their job, take the ideas in my head and make them look good on paper. After being shown the paper with the ideas scattered the "artist" got up left for 30 min without a word. Upon return the "artist" said we will get back to you in a couple days. Obviously they did not get back to me. I got frustrated and did not care to go back and get treated like that again. I highly do not recommend this so called "establishment". Very very poor customer service. I am very surprised as I put down $60 when they only asked for $20.

I was a walk in for a quick flat ear piercing. The staff was very friendly and I was in within 5 minutes after filling out my paperwork. It took 2 minutes for the piercing itself. The facilities are clean and comfortable. It is quite a ways out of my way to get to, but I will be going there for any future body modifications. Thank you to the staff, and especially Tim! I walked in today, with intentions of getting a small matching tattoo w my best friend. But we were told that the placement wouldn't be good, and it would fade away fast. I decided to just go ahead with getting a tattoo done, Brad was the artist. Part way through I got light headed and warm, so I asked him to stop so I could cool down. This dude went and bought a juice for me! And asked if I was okay. The service there is great, atmosphere is great as well! Definitely recommend this place.
