They have a really good selection of jewelry and are located in an amazing location right on the main road going into town. They can do pretty much anything you want and have an amazing list of guest artists that visit the shop frequently! STOP IN AND GET AWESOME WORK BY THE BEST IN TOWN!!!

This past Sunday I had my very first tattoo done at this shop and now I have nothing but praise. Jeremy was my artist and when I say he knows how to read people, I am not putting it lightly. He just knew without my having to verbalize that this tattoo had extreme significance to me, and he wanted to make sure that it was done the right way. It wasn’t about money or up selling. It was about making sure I was happy with the result in a way that fit the curve of my arm. Everyone in the shop was accommodating and kind. These are definitely people persons. I didn’t feel like I was just another patch of skin on just another one of their work days. I cannot recommend this shop enough. I’m already plotting my next tattoo with them.

This Brian guy kept telling my fiance he couldnt do the lettering he wanted and he couldnt get the picture he wanted. He kept saying he couldn't make the lines in the lettering that he wanted. And he didnt want to do the other pictures because of the details that is wouldnt look good. Well thats not an artist. So if you want a bad tattoo and not be able to choose what you want. Please go to this Brian guy. He will mess your stuff up. He is only good for not satisfying peoples art on their body.

My boyfriend and I spontaneously wanted to go get tattoos, and this place accepts walk ins on saturday (the day we went) so we came here. It took about 4-5 hours of waiting but that was expected. They did an amazing job with our tattoos and the artists were very quick and fun to work with. The only reason for 4 stars is just not knowing at all how long we were going to be waiting. Otherwise, great experience!

My bottom screw on my piercing had fallen out and so I came back and Brittany had helped me pick out a new one and put it in for me, she was super nice definitely going to get my next piercings done here :)

I got this tattoo back in July and since then I spent hours looking at it hoping it would heal and look better. I never thought a simple print of my cat could look so messy. The lady stretched my skin every which way on some of the tattoo and then not at all on other parts. I understand the need to stretch the skin but inconsistent stretching led to this. Half the time wasn't even looking at the tattoo as she was having a whole conversation with the artist next to her. I wish the $70 I spent on this TINY tattoo would mean it was worth showing off. But no, every time I show off my tattoo I get the same "are you gonna fix it?" Question. The third toe is the worst thing I've ever seen and the main part of the paw is so uneven and so embarrassing to show off!

Gitchee Gumee Tattoo is a must-stop for the Duluth tourist, or local. I’ve had countless tattoos done here, by every artist, and they always come out amazing. I really can not say enough amazing things about this establishment, the front desk ladies are always so warm and chipper. The artists are always so welcoming to ideas, they really know how to work with you. Not to mention the piercing counter is staffed with amazing, experienced piercers. The selection of specialty jewelry here is out of this world. I highly recommend the Saturday Same day appointments (they are similar to a walk-in). Overall if I could rate this place a 1000000/10 I would. Unfortunately, google only gives me 5 stars to rate off of. Do not be hesitant to stop in here for ANY service, they will not disappoint.

My Piercers name was Brittany, she was super helpful giving her opinion on Which piercing I should get, as I was undecided. She pierced my septum and I was worried it was going to be very painful, she reassured me that it will only hurt for a minute and that if I take care of it and clean it properly the healing should be close to painless. I am now 3-4 weeks into the healing process and it doesn’t hurt at ALL. I have gotten my septum pierced before and ended up taking it out due to uncomfortable healing process and soreness. When Brittany redid the piercing years after, it healed very nicely. I couldn’t be happier with it.

This place is absolutely exceptional, at the business, and the service they provide! I went here with my best friend to get our first tattoos, on their Saturday walk In appointments. Not only did they get us in right away, but they went above and beyond for the designs that we were looking for and helping us to get just what we’d like. I’ve gotten my helix, rook, and triple lobe piercings done here. I’ve come in multiple times when my piercings need a little help and there’s always someone willing to help me out, love that! I also got my first tattoo done here a couple months ago in July. I love my tattoo, but there are a couple small things I’d have touched up if possible. I can’t remember the artists name that tattooed me, but he seemed like he was very rushed/annoyed, which made me nervous considering it was my first tattoo. Overall, I’ve had a good experience here.

I Love Gitchee Gumee! I’m 2019 I got my nose pierced at Gitchee Gumee and just yesterday I went and got my back tattooed! It was my first time getting a tattoo and I was super frightened seeing as no one was able to go along with me. I went there on Saturday when they have the palm size tattoo special walk-ins all day and had the artist Jeremy. He was quick but also made such everything was exactly the size and style and placement I wanted. I got a tattoo on my wrist and he made sure to check in with me to make sure I was okay consider it was a tender spot. I've had tattoo fever for a couple months, but have been having issues getting in for an appointment at my usual tattoo shop. After seeing an ad on their Facebook page for walk-in appointments, I decided to give Gitchee Gumee Tattoo a try. I'm glad I did! I showed up pretty much as they opened and was able to get in with Jeremy right away. He was even cool enough to suggest I pop out to get cash to avoid having to pay a card transaction fee, so that was super considerate. We spent a little bit of time discussing what I was looking for in a tattoo and went over the process a little bit before the actual tattooing got underway. When all was said and done, I was in and out in about an hour. Not bad for a spontaneous tattoo! Gitchee Gumee has a bustling atmosphere (at least they did today), but everyone is so chill it's easy to settle in. As someone with severe social anxiety (aka I barely even leave my house), it's not easy for me to get comfortable out and about. Jeremy was very sweet, however, and kept reassuring me that I was doing an awesome job. He said I earned my badass card, but I'm think he way just being nice... Either way, he had warm energy and helped make me feel way more at ease. Bonus Jonas - he didn't seem to mind my big NPC energy either (aka don't speak unless spoken to). Re: The tattoo itself, it's rad. The design was a challenge - all circles and straight lines, with the added challenge of me anxiously shaking the entire time - but it's absolutely perfect. Thanks for the thunder mark! I'm so stoked to be able to be protected by Perun wherever I go.

Poor infection control! I went here because I had an issue with a newer cartilage piercing on a Sunday and my usual shop was closed. In hindsight I should have waited. The piercer who helped me was friendly but had poor infection control. She dropped my jewelry on the ground and did not change her gloves after picking it up, proceeding to put it into my (raw, inflamed) helix. I should have said something but I was too shocked that anyone would do that! 2 weeks later and I had to have my piercing removed due to an irritating infection and keloid formation. The owner flagged this review and stated this situation did not happen, but it did, and I stand my review.

My girlfriend and I went in for a walk in and we are pretty disappointed. Combined we took less than an hour and paid $120 each, which I assume is Bonnie's (the artist) minimum, but was still more than we expected. there were a couple small details missing from my piece and my girlfriend's piece was missing a couple more substantial parts from the art, a curve on part of it is really messy, and her piece had linework that my regular artist described as unacceptable.

I've never done all too well with needles, and this particular time I ended up passing out. They use the saniderm, or whatever the cool tattoo wrap is. Your tattoo won't itch, if you follow the instructions. It does feel a bit like an auto body shop. You get in, get on the waiting list (if it's a walk-in day), tell them what you want. When it's your turn, you finalize the design, get your tattoo, get wrapped, and leave.

I’ve heard this is a really great place to have piercings, but my experience wasn’t that great. I found out after my piercing that I was pierced by an apprentice, but no one was supervising her. She was very quiet and so didn’t really understand what she was saying honestly. She also pierced my ears while I was in the middle of talking, so my piercings are a little lopsided. I was told I could change earrings after a month, but when I tried changing them I knew right away that was not a good choice. Would love to try again with a different piercer. I’ve heard many great reviews. Update: I went back for a walk in tattoo on a Saturday and wanted to give the place another chance. I had already called ahead to get all the information I needed then I came in after work. The women at the front desk were rude, unprofessional, and extremely unhelpful. I wanted to make an appointment for a tattoo instead and I was told I would have to call. I’ve only ever heard wonderful things about the shop, which is why I decided to go here. If you aren’t talking to Jason or Kayla (I’ve heard they’re the best) I honestly wouldn’t bother. Beyond upset at the lack of customer service.

I wanted to change out my septum for the first time since getting it pierced 5 months ago, and i had some jewelry that i bought beforehand that i wanted to put in. i went here instead of my original piercer because my original piercer wasn't available before i was leaving town. i called ahead to do a walk-in and they said they could help me. i had a captive bead ring and as soon as the one woman started stretching it all the way out.. i was a little skeptical but the whole reason i came into a shop to have this done was because i figured they would know what they were doing. she had a bit of trouble getting it in my nose and then when she tried closing it again, the pliers slipped and hit me in the face. and my nose started bleeding. then the (i assume) more experienced piercer came in and said that it would be super difficult to do the captive now that they ring was bent, which i figured when the first woman started bending it. then she shattered the bead to the captive, which honestly it could have been cheap, i don't know. they had me pick out one of their clickers and gave me half off since she broke my other one. they got the clicker in pretty easily then and i was on my way. i think this place can be nice. and the piercers who helped me seemed like nice people and were patient but i was hoping that they would be a little more confident with the jewelry, so i ended up leaving with something i probably could have put in myself. tldr: the piercers were nice and patient but don't have the same confidence/experience as some other piercers i've seen in duluth

The guy drew me up several designs and was super informative- as it was my first tattoo. Made my experience totally awesome and amazing. I went on a weekend day and it wasn't busy! I would 10000% recommend this place to someone. I wish I could remember the artist's name because he was super kind. The tattoo was also super cheap- $60! My one thing is that I didn't receive information on a touch up, however, I totally fault myself with not asking about it.

I came here on Friday the 13th for $31 tattoo outlines. My friends also got tatted by the same guy (didnt catch his name) and came out good. I was a little skeptical at first with how fast the tattoo was done, but there was a ton of people and it was so inexpensive. I think it was rushed due to the volume, but that's no reason to receive a bad tattoo. I expected more as I've seen good things come from here and many friends of mine swear by this shop but unfortunately I will not be coming here again. You get what you pay for, so honestly trust your gut is all I can say ????

Jason is working on my right arm to finish up a Japanese sleeve and the whole experience has been very pleasant. He works great with darker skin tones like mine. My artist couldn't draw a straight line, and it's very obvious on my small tattoo. I got a walk in here and was tattooed by a young bald guy (or just shaved head? I couldn't tell). I asked for line work based off a picture i had and he kept trying to give me something that looked completely different until he ended up just tracing the picture I had. Probably should have done that in the first place, but even then it ended up looking jacked up. He also seemed like he was either new to tattooing or just not in the right headspace to be tattooing people (sweaty, tired, didn't talk much, etc.). They seemed busy that day so I get if he was worn out, but it sucks that I got a bad tattoo out of it.

I’m not very impressed with the tattoo that I got last Saturday. The artist seemed to be in a rush. My tattoo is messy and has spots with thick lines and spots with thin lines. She did not cover the whole tattoo with a wrap afterwards, so I ended up just taking it off on the same day so that moisture would not get in. I did get a piercing as well, and the girl who did it was really nice and funny. I’d definitely go back for another piercing, but not a tattoo.

This is a great place, where for my first tattoo and I couldn’t be happier! My mom and I decided to get matching tattoos on a whim while we were on a trip for my birthday. Called about 2 hours before closing just to see if they could take any more walk ins for the day, but without really expecting to be able to get in, and they told us to be there within an hour and they could fit us in. We went in and after explaining our idea our artist told us what parts of it would work and what wouldn’t and why and was able to sketch out his vision of it. They were very patient with my indecisiveness around what exactly I wanted the tattoos to look like, as it was my first one and I wasn’t used to the process of revising sketches and placement and such. Our artist made sure to check in throughout the process and make sure that we were doing okay, and was also kind and made good conversation the whole time. Tattoo healed beautifully and mom and I have memories of our trip and our bond forever now. I’ll definitely be back if I’m in Duluth

I have gone to this shop for a couple piercings as well as a couple tattoos. The big guy with the light ponytail and beard is amazing. I think his name is Mike? He did my first piercing, my nostril, and explained everything really well and answered my and my moms questions about tattoos. Another time I went to get my first tattoo there seemed to be some scheduling issues bc my mom and I drove over 2 hours to go to the appt. We made the trip for the consultation and the actual tattoos, although it took over an hour for us to get on the table he did an amazing job, his name was Jeremiah I think but he doesn't work there anymore. The other 2 times I went in to get a septum piercing it was done slightly crooked and I didn't have a great time. And the worst was when I went in to get a tattoo they said it was too small to make an appt so I went in on Saturday when they do small tattoos and the artist rushed and was heavy handed, I think his name was Jeremy, my tattoo has parts where the line blew out and I am generally unhappy with those times. There are some great ppl that work there but there are also not great ones. first photo is healed and second is right after he finished.

I usually never write reviews but I felt that this place deserved one. Jason Voss helped me design a Viking themed sleeve. He is extremely knowledgeable about the artistry of a tattoo. He will tell you exactly what will work and what won't, so don't get offended if he tells you your idea won't work. Take my advice and just trust him! If you want a well done tattoo come here. Everyone in the shop is so welcoming everytime my wife and I come in. She has even received a few tattoos from guest artists that have made appearances. This place has such a good vibe. Omg! This place is amazing! I've been getting migraines for years so I decided to get both of my daiths pierced because I had heard it helps for migraines. I REALLY wish I could remember her name... From my understanding there's only two girls that do piercings and I know she wasn't the one named Brittney. (I'm sorry if you're reading this!) She was absolutely incredible. She was so calm and relaxed that it made me relaxed also. I was pretty worried that after the first one I might chicken out on the second one but she made it so easy I went through with both. I will definitely be going back here for tattoos and piercings for life. Before coming in I had had a severe migraine every day for 45 days straight that sometimes lasted all day, and now I have only had two minor migraines that lasted a few minutes, in almost ten days!

I am been collecting tattoos for many years and from many different artists. I met Jason about 5 years ago at the Minneapolis Tattoo Convention. Jason is a straight forward, professional, caring, extremely talented person and artist. The quality of tattoo work performed at Gitchee Gumee tattoo by Jason and his artists is top notch. What I have learned from many years of collecting tattoos is: Tattoos are art and it is hard to put a price on art. You cannot go into a tattoo shop and expect a high quality or large piece of work for CHEAP. These men and women are artists and they are very skilled and talented. Please plan on paying them according. The other thing I have learned is these artists are in high demand, their workload is miles deep. When you want something tattooed on your body please don’t expect them to have the time right this minute, they are back logged for many days. The other thing I would like to mention is; the quality of your tattoo is directly proportional to the quality of the after care which is YOUR responsibility, not the artist. After that long winded post, I would like to THANK Jason and his artists at Gitchee Gumee Tattoo for high quality tattoos. I highly recommend Gitchee Gumee for ALL your tattoos and piercings!

Very uneven line work, tried to make an appointment, but said I couldn’t and to come in for walk in Saturday’s. This would be exactly why i wanted an appointment. Tattoo artist was very rude and only spent about 10 minutes on both my tattoos pushing very hard where a year and a half has gone by and it’s still raised. I wasn’t planning on making a review but I wanted people to see this so they know what they’re getting into going here. These would be very hard to touch up as well without thickening lines if anything I might need to cover them up at a different place.

The example I provided a few weeks ahead of time was fully in color and there was shading the tattoo. The colors were blocky and like they slapped the color on. The artist seemed to be in a rush as well. The example was delicate and the outcome was like a blocky cartoon.

I absolutely loved this tattoo shop. I first came in to get my belly pierced and eventually decided to go in again to get a tattoo. The service and people here are amazing and I would definitely recommend them. The reason I’m giving four stars is because the tattoo I got about a month or two ago started to get blurry. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the design and placement but the lines weren’t as fine as they were when I first got it, so I’ll probably add more to it to cover it up or something. Overall, it’s a cool place with a great vibe.

My mother got a tattoo from there and the artist that did her tattoo completely messed up her tattoo. He did not listen to what she wanted or even payed attention to try to figure it out. The lines in her tatoo are uneven. The size of the tattoo is way bigger then she asked and it looks nothing like what she showed him. The placement of the tattoo was tincorrect and he was very rude to her. Not only that but he was very unprofessional during the whole thing. The name of the artist that did her tatoo was Jeremy and neither or the rest of my family will ever go back to that shop. It was the worst experience my mom has ever had getting a tattoo and she is very upset with how it looks.

BEST tattoo shop in Duluth. At the last second on a Sunday morning me and 4 friends walked in all wanting tattoos without having made an appointment. Gitchee Gumme tattoo took all of us and they were the only ones in town that would. On top of that they were so helpful, we all were undecided on tattoo size and style. They sat with us and made individual plans for all our tattoos and accommodated us no matter how many changes we made without ever getting annoyed. They were very educating and helped us understand everything we needed to know. Two of us were getting tattoos for the first time and the staff just made them feel so comfortable and safe. My tattoo artist was the owner of the shop and he is incredible, he did all my tattoos quickly and even put up with me flinching. There woman tattoo artist was incredibly patient with all of us and helping design and even checks in with the people she tattoos later to see how it’s healing which I think is wonderful. Not to forget the other staff members who are so kind and funny. This tattoo shop just feels welcoming and happy, none of us were nervous because the staff is so freakin fantastic. I cannot thank the staff for their patience and kindness when dealing with a bunch of teenage girls. Recommend 100%, go to this shop!!!!! Plus the owner has the cutest dog ever, the trip was worth it just to see the dog. LOVE this shop

I can’t say enough about this shop. I have been tattooed at about a dozen shops and the experience here is by far the best. Each time I’ve come, I’ve had an issue. I went to Gitche Gumee for one of their Saturday Same Day Appointments and was overall very happy with how the tattoo came out, but the people at the counter never had me fill out any paperwork or asked for my ID until after I had gotten the tattoo, which my artist was very upset about. I just went in again hoping to get one of the Friday the 13th specials, and made sure to DM them on Instagram so I knew how to make an appointment and they knew what I wanted. Showed up, filled out the paperwork, and was told it was a very short wait and that they’d call me. An hour of wasting gas idling outside, I went in and asked how much longer it would be. They said “oh... we thought we called you..” and told me to sit and they’d get me in in a second. Someone behind me at the counter asked about getting a neck tattoo and the counter person said they weren’t doing neck tattoos today. I asked them if that included the back of your neck, as I had mentioned that I wanted it on the back of my neck when I DM’d them earlier today, and they didn’t say anything about it when they answered. The lady at the counter said no we’re not today. Basically just wasted an hour of my life because they aren’t organized. Artists seem like good people that do quality work, but the front desk people have been subpar. Work on customer service.

Unprofessional. The back story- after a buddy of mine recommended us to Gitchee Gumee Tattoo, my girlfriend contacted Jason via social media, describing want she wanted and was thinking. He responded very nice and prompt telling her to call the shop. On the phone setting up the appointment she also described what she had talked to Jason about, they agreed on an appointment at 12 noon 02/23/2020. Arrival- after excitement/anxiousness built during a 2-hour and 43-minute, 150-mile car ride to the tattoo shop from our current residence we showed up at Gitchee Gumee at 11:48a.m. The girl at the front counter was friendly and told Jason her next appointment has arrived. He replied by saying, “What’re you doing here so early.” in a confused angry voice. He was currently working on his 11am appointment and was not ready for his 12-noon appointment (Us) and he also had an appointment booked for 2p.m. as well. He was behind which is understandable but the way he acted was unnecessary. He started aggressively and unprofessionally bombarding her asking and saying things like “Is it a cover up? Half sleeve?” and “Don’t you know that a half sleeve is an all-day event” We were instructed to leave and com back at 1p.m. After the fact- So she was upset because of how condescending and rude. He made her feel embarrassed, dumb, and uncomfortable. That is not how you talk to a girl. 1) Your scheduling mistake is not our fault. 2) You are the one who set up the appointment in a 2-hour block knowing exactly what it was. Lastly- we called Gitchee Gumee at 12:35p.m. to update them letting them know out of courtesy that we will not be coming back at 1p.m. We asked for our $20+ deposit back and we were told that there is a 24 hour in advance cancellation fee… understandable. However, we DID NOT cancel. We were basically kicked to the curb. Jason did not even seem interested to do the work they had discussed. Why would we want to come back if the artist wasn’t even excited or seem to care, also how he talked to her was unprofessional. Getting the deposit back was not about the money it was about the principal for them to know they messed up by over scheduling and I could see in the eyes of the other employees as well, they too felt uncomfortable with the situation. I will never recommend such a place. Even though the others seemed like decent humans, the way Jason made my girlfriend feel uncomfortable, un-welcomed and dumb is baffling. We wasted 6 hours of our day driving, gas money we will not get back and a horrible experience from Gitchee Gumee.

I came in with an idea and Jason, the fella who did my tattoo, explained to me how my idea was way off in left field and the logistics of tattooing but also how he could make it work. He was real about it and took my idea and made an amazing piece of artwork that I absolutely love. He had fun doing it and it was fun watching him work his magic. I also like how they use some sort of medical tape when finished and after wearing it for 3 days and taking it off, there was no scabbing and its healed so much faster than my previous tattoos done elsewhere. This was a welcoming helpful medically sterilized shop. I received two piercings. I came in on a Saturday, which was a walk-in friendly day. I called ahead and the person in the phone was considerate and informative. I walked in nervous and the entire shop staff was welcoming and made me feel at ease. The piercer gave me the option to allow the apprentice to do my piercings or not. I chose the apprentice because it was less expensive, everyone needs to learn, and the piercer assured me she would be guiding her the entire time,(she did that and then some). They made me feel comfortable and safe durring some intimate piercings. They answered all my questions and spent extra time on the important details. As a medical professional I also noticed that all of their equipment was medically sterilized. The trainer made sure the apprentice was exact to the millimeter and communicated well throughout the entire appointment Overall it was a wonderful professional experience. I will go back for any of my piercings as well as tattoos.

Good place in Duluth, nice. Was able to get in quick. Owner seemed really nice. However, my tattoo quality was the lowest I’ve experienced. I asked for dark boarder lines and got pencil thin. Tattoo healed poorer than any of my previous. Ink is peeling off even after following the care instructions. This hasn’t happened before either. Covid protocols didn’t seem to be taken very seriously. Masks were not being worn at all times in a confined space. Credit card fee is 10% surcharge which is illegal! According to MN statute 325G.051 the surcharge cannot be more than 5%... not to mention it only costs them 1-3%. Forcing people cash to avoid tax and crushing with illegal fees doesn’t make it appear they care about the customer. If they charge you, you can report.

The environment within the sore gave me a “Cheers” feeling where everyone one come to hangout like a local pub! Me and my girlfriend swung in for a walk in tattoo this Sunday morning (6-30-19), chatted with Jeremy about what we wanted, waited for 15 minutes and Jeremy had the tattoo sketched and placed onto our body in minutes. It was a small tattoo but we were in and out in an hour. His line work is amazing and Jeremy is a great dude! Would definitely recommend coming and checking these guys out!
