Went to Dark Harbor for a Dairth piercing. The wait was a bit long (friday afternoon in August, I should have planned better!) but absolutely worth it! Nick did a spectacular job explaining the process, being reassuring and going over the cleaning/care instructions very thoroughly. The piercing itself was very quick and Efficient! One week later, I love my piercing and healing is going great. I would definitely recommend Dark Harbor and Nick!

I went in for a Daith piercing after a recommendation from a friend who'd had one. Nick was informative and careful, the studio was clean, and Nick's technique satisfied this nurse. I was also pleased that, while I expected it to hurt, the pain was momentary, and I haven't felt it since, once the jewelry was installed. Good job!

Very clean, very organized shop with lots of cool artwork and pieces to view in the waiting area. The have great sanitation procedures in place with Covid being a thing, and the staff was very friendly and inviting. Tori did a super cute matching tattoo for mother and me. She was cool to hang out with during the tattoo and a very sweet person. Would definitely go back there for more work and piercings.

Wow! I'm blown away! I went recently to get my ears pierced and was incredibly nervous because I've only ever been pierced with a gun. The piercer, Nick, was telling me why piercing with a needle hurts less than a gun (the gun pushes the sort-of-sharp earring into the ear with a lot of force). Piercing with a needle is safer, more sanitary, and it hurts less. He was right. He recommended using a closed aerosol canister of saline, as opposed to an open bottle of alcohol to clean the ears. He used backings that use tension (which is better than the screw-in backs because skin can grow over the earring if the backing is too close or touching, and it takes a lot of force to remove so there's a lower chance of the earring coming out). Nick opened all the materials in front of me and said that if any place refuses to let you see them opening the packages, then leave. So basically I've learned from this visit that I've been doing everything wrong until now. I'd recommend this place to anyone!

I had such a phenomenal experience working with Stephanie at Dark Harbor Tattoo Society. Last November I underwent a preventative double mastectomy after I found out I was high risk for breast cancer. I knew that I would need reconstruction including tattoo work. This is a deeply personal, emotional, and intimate process that you need to feel 100% comfortable with your tattoo artist and Stephanie completely exceeded my expectations. I could have gotten my tattoos done in Boston where I live, but I went out of my way to Portland for Stephanie specifically. Her warm personality, patience, and impeccable attention to detail is unparalleled. I had two sessions with her, each several hours, and I can confidently say as someone who had a 12 hour surgery, those hours with Stephanie, talking, and relaxing, were some of the better parts of my mastectomy journey. Even between sessions, she was super responsive to my questions and concerns about healing, reassuring me that we'll find the best solutions to my specific needs. Stephanie also took amazing care of me, as reconstructed breasts have nerve sensitivity, she always communicated about my numbing and any sensation. While she provides other services, I can't recommend her enough for any breast cancer previvors/survivors. Thank you for making me a whole, Stephanie & DHTS <3

I went in while one girl was about to get a tattoo. I was set up to go next and other girls in the first party then decided they wanted tattoos as well. I offered to go get food and let all the girls get tattooed at once and when I came back they decided they wouldn't tattoo me for the evening after I waited nearly two hours and even offered up my time. I got food at a way more expensive place because I was waiting in town and even paid for it the parking for that two hours only be canceled on. Needless to say I won't be going back. I have gone there in the past and enjoyed it and that just made a very bad taste in my mouth.

The shop is in the heart of the Old Port, in a basement level building. Inside are exposed brick walls, wooden beams and painted walls covered in art. Friendly staff, immaculately clean. Their word of mouth reputation was on point. Also have to give accolades to Nick Holes, who gave my daughter a perfect cartilage piercing for her 17th Birthday. He took great care of her and gave excellent after care instructions.

The studio was very clean and comfortable. Tori was our artist. She made my mom feel very comfortable. She was amazing. She was personable, she listened and also explained things. From the second we walked in everyone we spoke with was friendly and accommodating. I had a very vague idea of what I wanted but told Tori the basics (my son had a more clear idea of what he wanted). Dark harbor is completely unprofessional. We had been planning to come up and get tattoos on our yearly weekend away. We called prior in the week to make appointments and were told we would be taken at 3pm on a Saturday. We walk in, and while the place was clean there was only one tattoo artist on working. ON A SATURDAY. We approached the woman behind the desk and said we were here for our appointment-she had no idea what we were talking about. Then asked us if we got the date wrong and we were suppose to be in yesterday (Friday). Nope. We made the appointment for the time and day we would be there... the artist, josh mellows forgot about our appointment (he was the one who made it) and was working on another gentleman and told us it would be at least an hour. We filled out our Paperwork and was told they would call us when josh was ready. Over an hour passed and he finally called to tell us he was starting another tattoo, and could take only two of us who wanted very small things and the rest would have to come back tomorrow. This is after we asked about body jewelry and no one who was working there could answer our very basic questions, on pricing and sizing ect... all in all I would not waste your time even trying this parlor out. It was a waste of an entire afternoon and we left without tattoos, which some of us had been looking forward to for a year.

We stumbled on dark harbor on a Sunday funday out In Portland you feel super comfortable when you walk through the door! I ended up getting an arm tatto of an amazing American traditional rooster from Nick and I’m so in love! The place is clean and the artists and piercer where all super AWSOME and welcoming we scheduled a few more tats and a piercing for two weeks out and I couldn’t be more excited! Nick Holes was so awesome! Had my septum pierced by him 4 months ago (first non-ear piercing) so I was kinda nervous. Nick was super professional and kind and put me right at ease. I had a “Maintenance/Colorboost” appointment with Stephanie. It is <24 hours after the appointment and I am already so impressed with the results. She previously did a “combo brow” in April 2019, but I was ready for a touch up due to the natural fading process. I could have waited another year or so but was too excited to see her again. The pictures attached are screenshots from a video, but you can still tell how crisp the strokes are. I’ve never had a good brow shape, but since my first appointment I get compliments ALL THE TIME. If you don’t have permanent makeup, I’m not sure why you haven’t book with her yet!!!

I had made an appointment for June 13 back in March. Initially it was for the 12th but artist forgot she was booked and thankfully told me and switched to 13. I've been calling and messaging for some time trying to get an APPROXIMATE (I know cost can change) cost for work so I wasn't walking in blind. I have a friend that knows owner and she had reached out today cause nobody was calling me back and when you call and nobody answers, their voice-mail says don't leave messages, we don't answer. My friend reached out out of the goodness of her heart and because she previously knew the owner. In that time frame my artist called and I explained some issues. I didn't cancel. I was still going. I was bringing extra (sister tattoos booked so 2). I just needed to have a rough idea and if credit cards were accepted due to fraud on my account. Apparently after I got off the phone, my issues were broadcast and I became a joke in your shop because the owner decided it was funny to laugh at my friend for what was going on in my life. Again. I hadn't cancelled. Was still going to pay for both and tip. I promptly called and cancelled since clearly my life is a joke to you. Im out the $100 deposit as well, but clearly you need it more than I do. If some thing like fraud on my bank account is funny to you I can only imagine how you talk about other clients. Got my nose pierced a few weeks ago by Nick. The studio was extremely clean, and they were able to accommodate me as a walk-in very quickly. Nick explained everything in detail, and recommended the best options for my piercing. The entire process was easy and (almost) painless. Would definitely recommend!

I called and imquired about a nose piercing and was told I could walk in as they werent taking appointments. I showed up 10 minutes and called to be let in the building to be told they were full and wasnt doing anyone else aftet I had just paid for parking. I told the girl on the phone, i had just called amd that makes no sense as she did not relay that information to me. Poor communication and lack of care for customers time and commute. On top of that she had a dont care attitude. I would never go back there.

I wish no stars was an option. Made appointment for matching tattoos with my husband for the last day of our honeymoon. I had called several studios for an appointment and this was the only shop were available us in for a 2pm appointment. I received a call today from an artist, from a Rhode Island phone number) and I responded I already have an appointment he said thank you and hung up (thinking it was another studio). When I arrive they tell me he rescheduled our appointments because of the misunderstanding, he can fit us in later if we wanted to wait. I told her I could not wait because were leaving today and we waited 3 extra hours. At no point did Mitch clarify that my appointment was with him. The girl who came down confidently told me it was my fault for the confusion. So rude and unwelcoming. She spoke as if she was doing me a favor for a paid service. If never book here again.

Went to get my nose pierced last minute, not knowing the shop was going to close ten minutes after I came in, the piercer, Nick, still sat me down and pierced my nose. Outstanding customer service, pretty much painless, he talked me through everything on how to properly take care of it. I would highly recommend Dark Harbor to anyone looking to get a tattoo. Steve has done two different pieces for me and I am incredibly happy with both of them. I had a very specific idea for the first one, and he executed it better than I could have imagined. For the second, I had an idea with few design specifics in mind. Steve designed a great tattoo, and it came out fantastic as well. The shop itself is comfortable and incredibly clean. The artists are very friendly and create a welcoming environment. I will most certainly be back for another tattoo in the near future.

Labor Day Weekend my friend and I booked a weekend in Portland. We reached out via Yelp to Dark Harbor Tattoo and within minutes we had a response. Amazing customer service. Our experience only got better when we met Joshua. Joshua not only made us feel comfortable and relaxed he put such amazing energy in the the two pieces he did for us. Mine personally he took our conversation about me being a Leo while he was doing my friends piece and incorporated it into the creation of my piece. I originally went in with the intention of getting the script " be fearlessly authentic" but Joshua drew out and amazing Lions tooth kind of like a rabbits foot but personally designed for me. It sit right above my Leo sign on my arm. He took a basic script and made it personal to me. Not only will I be back to this establishment I will continue to refer those looking to get a tattoo while also visiting again myself. My friend and I were a walk-in for piercings. It was about a two and a half hour wait, which Nick was very upfront and honest about. $65 for a septum piercing, and $70 for a cartilage with upgraded jewelry. Getting our piercings was an amazing experience. It was a first for my friend and I, my friend being very nervous about it. Nick was friendly, professional, cleanly, and incredibly nice and patient throughout the entire experience. He walked us through each of the steps and reassured nerves when necessary… Great small talk, and quick experienced work. If I get another piercing I am more than certain Nick is the only person I want to do it. Cannot recommend him enough!

I was on vacation in Maine and decided to get my ears re-pierced, so I looked up tattoo shops and found this one had the highest ratings. I got my ears pierced when I was 6 at the mall. ???? They weren’t straight and I would go years without wearing earrings. One side finally started closing up and it was not straight anyway, so super annoying trying to get an earring through. Piercings are walk-in, so we waited about 30 min until I could be seen. Nick (maybe the only piercer there?) was wonderful. He is very professional and thorough. He takes his job seriously. I’m sure the basic ear lobes piercing is the most boring and basic, but he didn’t treat me like I was lame haha. For several years now, I have recommended parents take their kids to tattoo shops for ear piercings and will continue to do so!
