I've worked with both Matt M and Baily here and had nothing but good experiences. I've had primarily small pieces but my husband has had some long sessions in the shop. It can be super intimidating walking into some shops but both of these guys were relaxed and easygoing. My advice, look at the artists portfolios before you call to book - the shop has a diverse group of artists and will ask who you want to work with. The rates were what I would expect to pay for this quality of a tattoo. I will definitely be back again.

Great experience with a super friendly artist who is excellent at what she does. Booked with the shop for a small chest tattoo in December - I let Alexis know what I had in mind - a small sweetpea flower - and she figured she’d be good to just book it without needing a separate consult. Put down the deposit, waited a few weeks for the appointment, got a phone reminder about the appointment just in case, and then it was time to get it done! While this wasn’t my first tattoo, it WAS my first time leaving the design up to the artist. Having seen Alexis’ work on Instagram, I was excited to see what she came up with and what I would put on my body. I wasn’t worried. The detail in the design was terrific and I loved the colour selection too. My only question to her was .. can we go bigger with it? :) It didn’t take too long to get done, but that was more a testament to Alexis’ skill than anything else. Good conversation, great atmosphere, and what a great early Christmas present for myself. Will definitely go back and get more ink. Thanks Alexis!

This isnt a recent experience - rather, happened around 2 years ago, but since I still am quiet afraid of going through the same experience, I must add this review. I'm giving 3 starts because the technology used was good and the professionals know what they are doing. If that was all that came into count, I'd likely give 5 stars. However, as a customer, I must say my experience wasnt pleasant. I booked a tattoo removal session and got there 5-10minutes (not more nor less) late, and they said they'd have to rebook me. Thats fine, even though I believe they could have given me a the session anyways since some things that we dont control may happen such as transit, etc, I was the wrong one here so cant really complain. So I rebooked and here its when it all started. First, I asked for wifi since I was there waiting. Clearly they had wifi there, but were not willing to share it with me so ok, may be rules. So I waited a bit - more then they waited for me when I was a bit late - and went for my session. Here there is nothing to complain about - they are professionals at what they do. When it all finished tho, I was asked by the guy who was at the cashier to pay for a tip. Now, I paid over 130$ ish for a 10minute session, didnt even have the wifi password shareed with me, and see really no reason why I should tip. I said I wasnt going to tip - you must understand the service is already expensive - and he gave me suuuch a bad eye that I truly felt pretty embarrassed. Maybe it wont sound like much, but it did indeed make me not go back for I was afraid of having even worse customer experience simply for not paying the tip. So well, to sum it up, they have really good professionals and definitely really good equipment there, and I'd say so both for tattoo removing and actually doing tattoos with good artists; however, my experience as a customer made me afraid of going back and keeping on with my removal.

Had a Tattoo today with Amanda and it was incredible! Blown away by the skill and attention to detail that was put into the piece. It was a pencil sketch linework type design and the line weights and sensibilities of the reference drawing was translated perfectly. Still in awe. Couldn't be happier, the actual shop itself is very clean and professional as well, very comfy. I would recommend the shop to anyone.

Absolutely disappointing! I booked with ReneBotha since December 2017 and the only availability she had was for January 31 2019. That was fine, I can understand the high demand because her work and i was willing to wait. Here is where the miscommunication began, I reached out to Rene the other day asking if the January 31 2019 can be rescheduled on a weekend instead since i work on weekdays 9 - 5, she said it was not possible, i said fine no problem. Then i received another email telling me about other dates of my sessions that i never confirmed or even knew about. They were all on weekdays during my working hours?! I even asked her what are these dates and how come now... one year later... you tell me about these dates?!! I waited for more than a year for the session with Rene and then i recieved this information of the dates that i never knew of, if i knew about these dates I would have never confirmed and waited more than a year!!! I could have moved on and found another artist... this is rediculous. What a waist of time thank you!

Awesome ! I didn’t feel any pain at all. I showed them the tattoo and it was very accurate. During the procedure, they make sure that the customer’s minds are distracted. They engage in interesting and funny conversations, so the customers don’t feel any pain. Reasonable rates. To top it all, after the procedure, they provide clear instructions of how to maintain the tattoo in a hygienic way, for the following few weeks, to avoid any possible infection/s. The front desk was very rude with me, i apparently was taking up to much time with the artist, apparently i was only given so many minutes with the artist before i was taking up to much of the companies time. Not to mention she double booked me 2 times and was late every-time (5 sessions total) Never again would i book or recommend Gastown to anyone Ps I just booked with another tattoo shop to help fix the realism tattoo i got. estimated cost $800 thanks for a terrible tattoo.

I had a terrible experience with Alexis Thompson, who was incredibly rude and unprofessional. She also left scarring due to being too heavy handed (I was bleeding a lot during the process as well). The shop owner was nice and called to apologize about the situation; however, that doesn't make up for the fact that I am now scarred due to amateur work, and having to get another artist to fix her mess.

Got some tattoos from Moloch (@elijotamoloch) earlier this year and I've got to say, they were some heavvyy black tats in some spicy spots (stomach and upper rib cage, yet they healed up incredibly well. No scarring, no bleed outs. His experience in tattooing is evident. Refreshing to see such a talented and humble artist open to collaborate on ideas. Grateful to have lined those pieces up with him. Shoutout to the apprentice at the time Josh for some solid customer service from the get go, who is now killing it with the tats that I see on instagram. Originally was just going to get the one tat but first experience went so smoothly I lined up a 2nd within 2 weeks after. Saw Mitch the owner, walking around as well during the day bopping his head in and giving some good vibes to the artists/clients. I have been going to Cleo for tattoo removal for 5 sessions so far. She is so lovely, makes a painful experience enjoyable. She is very knowledgeable, and realistic. No pushing to hard and blistering or scaring trying to remove faster like some other shops do.

I had my work done by Chris, a guest artist from Portland. The experience with him was great. Super friendly guy and I was very pleased with my tattoo. However, the girl at the front desk was very rude to me both when I arrived and when I left. She did not have me down in the appointment book and kept on questioning me if I was at the right place and who my appointment was with. Then she made me show her proof that I actually had an appointment. I had to show her the emails exchanged between myself and Chris, as well as his Instagram account with his post about being a guest artist at this parlour. She then had to check with her manager. She just kind of treated me like I was an intruder. When I left, no acknowledgement of my presence whatsoever. I had to ask her if she had seen a bus pass that I'd lost and she simply replied "no" and turned back to her computer. It doesn't take much to smile, say hello, and ask you how your day is going. You gotta treat your customers better, they're the reason you're in business.

I went here to get laser tattoo removal. I had checked around and these guys offer the best rate. I have a tattoo on my back about 15 square inches and they only charged me 120 bucks. The laser guy seems to know his stuff and was quick at doing it (it did hurt but he would stop part way through and ice it which helped a lot). It's been a few weeks and I can definatley notice my tattoo fading. Hopefully it only takes a few more sessions but he said he cannot guarantee how many it will take. Anyways, I was happy with what I got compared to what other places are charging for the same thing.

Got a wolf by Mitch who I was told by all employees at Adrenaline on Granville that he was “the best traditional artist in Vancouver”. Extremely happy - not only is he the best, he’s incredibly fast. His personality sucks but whatever (just kidding! He’s a rad dude!) Daily I’ve been getting compliments - the work speaks for itself. The shop is so freakin cool looking too, with lots of cool folks working there who love to chat about tattoos. Only complaint is he’s been solid booked up due to high-demand but I expect that when you want “the best in town”. Though he does have a fair system where he (at the time of this) books only one week at a time for walk-ins, so everyone has a chance.

I was getting my first tattoo done here -- it was a simple design with just black lining. Through email I was recommended to Henry. I sent him a picture of what I wanted done (which was a picture of a tattoo already done, but I wanted it a little different). Henry was more than willing to make the tattoo individual for me, as he felt that he didn't want to rip off another person's ink. I totally agree, and I love that he thought like that. During the process of getting the tattoo, Henry made me as comfortable as he could. Since I was getting it on my forearm, he let me lay on my stomach, listen to music, talked me through the few not-so-good-feeling bits and kept me happy through it all. He talked to me like I was a friend, and that made me feel comfortable. Thank you, Henry!

After losing the clip on my body piercing while in the city I called in to see if they sold any or could direct me to somewhere that could. Downright bloody rude doesn't cover it. As soon as I mentioned piercing the woman kept interrupting me to tell me they don't do piercings. Yes I understand that I said but...... and interrupted again. Manners cost nothing. There wasn't anyone else waiting so it wasn't like I was blocking other customers. I walked out in the end and to think I was planning to book in for some new artwork on my next trip. Got better places to spend my money than here. Nice thing about the experience was 2 customers in the shop ran out after me to offer help and alternative directions.

All of the staff members I interacted with were friendly and accommodating. The shop was really clean and it felt like the artists were working to make clients feel comfortable and prepared. I got my first midsize tattoo from Alexis and was a bit nervous, but she was awesome and personable and so far the quality of the work has been great. Her lines are clean and she did her best to make sure that I was comfortable throughout. My only minor grievance is that I wasn't able to see a sketch of the tattoo until I arrived at the shop. I booked a few months in advance and was hoping to be able to see the design before the day of the tattoo in case there was something I wasn't happy with. Alexis made quite a few changes to our original plan and I really like what she came up with. I told her to use her discretion and trust her as an artist and loved the choices she made so I knew it might be different, but it would have been nice to have an idea of the final design a little bit in advance. Overall, I am really happy with the work I had done. The shop was professional and friendly, and I feel that Alexis was accommodating, gave good input, was gentle, and has great attention to detail.

Exactly what I dreamed of! René Botha’s artwork is truly so beautiful. I waited a year to get in to see her and I’d have waited many more... she’s brilliant!! René created 2 half sleeves for me, one of which included a coverup for an older piece + a tiny ring finger ellipsis. There’s the most wonderful softness + strength that coexist in her work. She took such good care of me. I’m endlessly grateful and stoked to have her art with me forever ♡

Hands down the best shop in the City, and I have personally been to in any city. Every Artist is of the highest caliber. It is clean, friendly, and you never feel like an outsider. I have had enough work done there I could say I have spent days in the chair with Mitch. through this time I feel like I made a friend not just a tattoo artist. I recommend gastown Tattoo to anyone who is in need of ink. If you are surprised by the length of time you have to wait for your appointment, just remember this is a sign of quality work and its worth the wait.

My first and only tattoo that I received from a woman working at Gastown Tattoo Parlour was a massive mistake. First, I sent ahead pictures of what I wanted -it looked nothing like the pictures I sent and the "artist" said that they had their own take on the imagery. ... I'm the one paying for something that will be on my skin for the rest of my life...do it the way I want. Second, when she put the temporary one on, she got the saying wrong and had to change it. Third, she tattooed it so close and small, it has completely bled into itself and you can't read was it says. Just a horrible tattoo artist with little skill IMO.

Got a tattoo from Lou and ended up with scars it was pretty evident that the needles were dull but he didn’t change them when he went to the shop to do a follow up with him the staff at the shop were extremely rude and ignored me until I made a point to get their attention I would never recommend getting a tattoo here they have a very “interesting” attitude towards newer costumers

I spoke with a lady on the phone beforehand who was really friendly and helpful and told me to come down for a consultation where I was quite impressed with the artists portfolio and put a deposit down for an appointment. I show up for my appointment only to wait in the lobby for nearly an hour before they tell me the artist had to cancel and wouldn't be available until the middle of the following week. The next appointment they called me 1 hour beforehand to cancel again. I ended up getting the tattoo the following week and had to completely reschedule my trip to Vietnam. I'm happy with the ink but definitely not with the customer service!

Seem to get asked by everybody where I got my work done now. Was a really nice bonus that he is such a nice guy with some great stories. Had my first tattoo at this shop done by Matty, mainly because he was accepting walk-ins that day, and the work he did just blew me away, so I made appointments to go back for more- highly recommend Matty too. Front desk and all the artists here are really nice and quick to offer help. So many more things make this shop great, too many to write about in this short review!

Don't get tattooed here. My tattooer was late and left a window open even though it was winter. I was freezing cold during my appointment, and he was rude to me the entire time. It took twice as long as he estimated so I paid twice as much as I budgeted for. This was my worst ever experience at a tattoo shop.

Staff was mostly professional. The artist did a really good job on my tattoo. It was relatively painless. Only reason I didn’t give it five stars is because I felt like the staff took it personally when I didn’t go with their recommendation for placement, which made me feel a bit uncomfortable. I’m happy with my chosen placement though and I’m glad I decided to go ahea because the tattoo looks amazing and is healing really well!

oh wow, the attitude! I inquired about getting a tiny little symbol on my wrist. The receptionist told me that such a small tattoo will not age well, and that I need to give them a sketch of my design, etc. I explained, no, what I want is simply a tiny little symbol to remind me of a loved one who passed away, and I don’t care if it doesn’t age well, I’m doing this only for myself. She said in a very condescending tone “well our ARTISTS will refuse to do work that will not age well, the quality of their work is of utmost importance to them”. lol, welcome to Gastown. I’ll get my little tattoo elsewhere.

Got a cover up tattoo done here and was thoroughly impressed with the entire experience. The reception girl was very helpful and friendly. The shop itself doesn't feel like the typical tattoo studio. It has lots of taxidermy (creeped my girlfriend out but i loved it HA!) and interesting stuff all over the place. Okay, about the tattoo..I had a crappy old tattoo done somewhere else years ago that I didn't want anymore. These guys offer a laser tattoo removal service so I had a couple sessions done before I got my tattoo. It didn't come out completely but it faded drastically over a couple months. Arlin then did a rad cover up piece for me and I can't even see my old one anymore. Exceeded my expectations. I would recommend this shop to anyone.

Just left a session with Logan! I'm sitting at the Mexican place next door having a post-tattoo margarita, in fact and was just itching to get the word out there. Logan is an incredibly talented young man. Almost as if he plucked the design right out of my head, the tattoo couldn't be more of a dream come true. On top of that, he's super chill to hang with for a few hours; very humble and gracious. Gastown Tattoo is a great shop. I've been now for a tattoo and a few sessions of removal with the equally cool Ed, and the place is just fantastic. All while being reasonably priced for the quality of work they produce. Got my first large tattoo with Frank Grimes and the work is of very high caliber. He has a very strong artistic vision and all of his suggestions with regard to design were right on point. During the tattooing process he was gentle and worked with razor sharp focus and meticulous attention to detail. In general the staff at the parlour are professional, friendly and down to earth. I can't speak to their work directly, but from what I observed I feel the other artists operate with high quality expectations and integrity. I get the feeling that the people at this studio are more interested in doing quality work that represents them artistically than raking in monkey. This probably goes without saying since the place has a good reputation, but very clean and sanitary. I also liked that there was no hard sell for post-care products.

I heard about this place from some friends. I compared their piercing prices to other studios downtown and they were about 15-20 bucks cheaper for my Helix piercing. Super happy with the service. It was quick and didn't hurt too bad! I liked how the piercer really knew his stuff and gave me detailed aftercare instructions. Very clean and professional shop. I will be back for a tattoo I am sure!

She drew it on all by hand, and checked in with me the whole time to make sure I absolutely loved it. She let me have full control over breaks, when to stop, etc. and when she could tell I was having a hard time she gave me juice-boxes and encouraged me! She is such a talented artist and just an overall lovely person. My tattoo already looks absolutely stunning and I can't wait to finish this piece with her.

Answer to the owner: I didn’t have time to explain what type of tattoo I wanted and where on my finger. I just mentioned finger that right away the person at the front desk stop me and said we don’t do that. I didn’t have any assessment from no one it was a straight NO. Very not welcoming at the front reception. I never had a tattoo before and wanted to learn more. I want a tattoo on a finger and the person at the reception answered they don’t do that. I asked her if she knew an another tattoo shop where they do tattoo on fingers she answered don’t know. Too bad!

While I initially had a bad experience with a particular artist, the manager there is pretty amazing. She called right away to rectify the situation, provided a full refund, and was deeply apologetic for the behaviour of her contracted staff. It seems like they have a lot of kind and talented tattoo artists...just make sure to do a consultation first so you don't end up with the wrong one.

Got some tattoos from Moloch (@elijotamoloch) earlier this year and I've got to say, they were some heavvyy black tats in some spicy spots (stomach and upper rib cage, yet they healed up incredibly well. No scarring, no bleed outs. His experience in tattooing is evident. Refreshing to see such a talented and humble artist open to collaborate on ideas. Grateful to have lined those pieces up with him. Shoutout to the apprentice at the time Josh for some solid customer service from the get go, who is now killing it with the tats that I see on instagram. Originally was just going to get the one tat but first experience went so smoothly I lined up a 2nd within 2 weeks after. Saw Mitch the owner, walking around as well during the day bopping his head in and giving some good vibes to the artists/clients. AVOID CHRIS SCALLYWAG!!! WORST PIERCING EXPERIENCE EVER!!! My new ear piercing from Gastown Tattoo did not line up properly with the one on the opposite ear so I went back to the shop to have the captive bead ring removed. The piercer REFUSED to remove the CBR as he thought it was just fine. I patiently explained that I had measured the distance between the holes on both ears and that his piercing was out by at least 1.5 mm. He then accused me of being difficult, rudely and inaccurately commented on my 'attitude', and basically threw me out of the shop. Is this professional behaviour?? (No wonder this person has 'bipolar' tattooed on his arm.) Shame on Gastown Tattoo for having someone so unprofessional and incompetent working.

Not too sure what this place classed as customer service. But the gentlemen who I spoke with today was a certified D**K. I introduced myself he just said hi then I asked if any of the tattoo artist specialist in Japanese. He said to me " yes there's a few that enjoy jap" but to me I want someone who specialises in this area in which he said "enjoys and specialieses are the same thing" .... I then looked through the so called Japanese "Specialist/Enjoyed doing jap book" and unfortunately it wasn't too great. The gentle man had the decenscy though to totally ignore myself as I asked some questions, and just reply to his mobile phone, (as it seemed that was way more important)... the shop looked professional but from first impressions I won't be back.

When I was getting a tattoo done at the time. During the consultation it seemed like the artist I was working with was going to create a piece based off the details I was giving him. However during my appointment, the artist instead showed me the exact same piece he already created which was displayed on the store wall. I didn’t mind it too much since it was still a nice design but asked to see if we could work and change a small detail. However another artist working at the same time butted in accusing me of being a difficult customer. Looking back at the experience now, I wish I had gone to another studio.

Went there myself since the website said I can talk to receptionist and get recommendations on artists. Receptionist tells me to email individual artists. Went home & emailed and turns out that the email goes straight to front desk, not individual artists. Receptionist emails back and asks me to phone for appointment? Like that's why I just emailed you... Again, the phone is directed to front desk. Plus got commented on how I cannot tattoo on the place I wanted because I will flinch and ruin tattoo??? Unbelievable. I have not gotten a chance to speak to the artists, maybe they are more professional. But I am no longer interested in wasting my time with this negative atmosphere.

I can only really comment on Rene Botha because she's the only artist I've seen at Gastown, but she's inhumanly gifted. I don't think I could have taken this project to anyone else; most other artists who see it flat out tell me they would not have attempted it. I feel quite lucky to have made it onto her client list.

After doing hours of research to find the most suitable place to get my first tattoo I decided on Gastown Tattoo. I have a couple of friends who got some tattoos here and they look amazing. I checked out their portfolios online and was impressed with the quality of work on there. I set up a consultation with Shane and he was great to work with. Everyone in the shop that I spoke with seemed really chill and helpful. I like how the tattoo artists here all seem to be genuine artists who like to draw and create. I was blown away with the illustration that Shane came up with and the tattoo itself turned out even better than the drawing. The experience there was great. The shop is clean and relaxed. I can't say enough good things about this place.

I first learned that Gastown Tattoo also does laser tattoo removal from a coworker. I’d been putting off removal for years because every laser clinic I’d spoken to had such expensive quotes... I have two tattoos that I want gone, and one of them is fairly large, so having to pay per square inch really drove up the cost. But my coworker told me he was paying an extremely reasonable rate and his tattoo was fading very well. I went to Gastown for a consultation and was shocked to hear that they would charge me a fraction of what other clinics quoted. If I hadn’t seen the results on my coworker’s tattoo with my own eyes, I might’ve thought it was too good to be true. I’ve since seen Cleo for several sessions and couldn’t be happier with the results so far. My lighter tattoo is almost completely gone, and the heavy, stubborn linework on my other tattoo is looking very faded and fragmented. Cleo has amazing bedside manner, explains everything very clearly, and has a fast and steady hand. It is different for everyone, as bodies and tattoos all respond in their own way, but I’ve never had any bleeding or blistering after a treatment. My only regret is that I didn’t find out about Gastown Tattoo and Cleo a lot sooner.

When they were signing forms I decided not to and was just going to go along for support. Adam and Jenny were so sweet and really good at what they do. When they were done they asked if I did want one after all and I made a spontaneous decision to get a tattoo I've been wanting all along after all. I'm so happy with it. Worst reception experience ever! Possibly not interested in smaller, less pricey projects. It was very hard to book an appointment in the first place and I had to call several times. The receptionist seemed poorly organised and unhelpful from the beginning. My appointment got cancelled just two hours before, with not even an apology. I was travelling from Victoria for the day, just for the tattoo appointment. I had to take the day off because they were fully booked for the weekends, and I had to drive and pay for the ferry from Victoria. I went for a refund and gave the receptionist a chance to apologise and make up somehow by explaining that I had travelled there from Victoria. Well, I was clearly hoping for way too much than she was capable to offer! She did not apologise or even show any sympathy. She said something around "cancellations happen..." She is clearly in the wrong career and bad for business! Will definitely not go there again and never recommend them!

An hour before my appointment the front desk person called me to tell me that the artist could not see me because he had an emergency. Which is totally understandable, it can happen. What I can’t stand for is her complete rudeness. When I explained that I was a little upset at the turn of events and if maybe I can get an urgent appointment or see another artist (it was a small piece I was getting), she laughed at me. LAUGHED. And said “yeah ok.” And then hung up. After that terrible episode I didn’t even want to make an appointment here and I went somewhere else. So if anyone from the parlour is reading this review I want you to know that your front desk people are genuinely horrible and they cause you to lose your clients.
