I have used the services of Alterations express for a few years now and it is my go to place for both clothing and curtain alterations. The staff have always been friendly and informative and most customers should realise that sometimes the back of house have to cover the front desk and be patient. I highly rate it - looking at some of the negative comments it is up to you the customer to explain your requirements clearly to the staff. The shop is always busy, which I would suggest is and advert in itself.

Went for a suit alteration and they managed to completely make the jacket unwearable - taken in incorrectly, wrong size, billowing out at the top and the stitching came out of the bottom after an attempt to wear it.

Do not waste your time! Please, investigate any adjustment stores processes before handing your clothing items to them, otherwise you will be left extremely disappointed and angered! Went there earlier today to get my jacket's zip repaired. My jacket had a double ended zip (to clarify – it had both: a top and a bottom runner). Unfortunately, my top runner broke, so I was looking for a quick replacement. First off, the woman who tried to help me cut out the zip stopper in order to put the new/top runner. To my surprise, she did not bother explaining or, at least, asking for permission or whatsoever. Mind you, it was an expensive jacket, so I really wanted it to get done the correct way. Since I am not familiar with how things are done myself, I was not really aware of what to expect. But normally people would try talk you through it, but no. Not in this case. Now, it is worth mentioning that prior to my visit here, I went to another adjustment store where they replaced my jacket's top runner without removing anything. That said, initially I had it done somewhere else, though the colours of the new runner didn't match with the bottom runner, hence why I was looking for a different place where someone could assist me further. This place failed to do so. If I had prior knowledge to what this store was going to do I would have simply not gone. After everything that went wrong, the woman offered to fix it free of charge had I found the correct top runner but I just could not trust her to do it. Never again. Would not recommend. UPDATE: Later on, I went to the first adjustment store where they fixed this mess free of charge after hearing what happened. Yes, the runners don't match as I had hoped so at first, but it will do for now.

Decided on going to them to shorten the sleeves of my jacket since it seemed as if they were the only alteration shop that bothered to reply on their reviews. They worked on my jacket well and on time. Not sure why other people are giving bad reviews but I guess some people are just a little too entitled.

Horrendous customer service. Asking for general enquiries on getting a suit altered smaller. All that was happening was me getting laughed at by these two seamstresses who couldn't be more patronising. I asked the simple questions "can it be done" and "is it possible for next week?" They constantly whinged about it "costing me a fortune" (which I don't know how it was a problem for them, it's money??) and how much work needed to be done (so not a definite yes). I was trying to be as patient as I can but I'm only human and can take so much patronising and lack of interest from seamstresses who either are too scared they can't do the job well or couldn't be bothered at all. They started pinning the suit to show me. I thought it looked good and yet they still kept on whinging. In the end, I thought to myself how could I be at all confident with them making a decent job of it, not only feeling more stupid about the whole ordeal but also a bother for these employees who just gave constant lack of professionalism and attitude. Apologised for wasting their time left and went to a more lovely shop down Walmgate with the two of the loveliest ladies who made no fuss at all with the requests for the same price and no doubt equally as busy. Never bothering with this "Alteration Express" again. They obviously don't want new custom.

REALLY POOR SHOW - Took two pairs of trousers in for alterations about three weeks ago. Have had to take both pairs of trousers back for different reasons. One hadn't been done properly (they had missed an issue of their ticket with the zip problem - one of a couple off things I initially asked to be fixed and I only discovered hadn't been fixed when I tried to wear them for work whilst travelling). When I took the trousers back to say the issue zip hadn't been repaired the owner got really funny with me and said she would charge me extra. Despite the fact that I couldn't wear the trousers for the time that they had to go back into the shop and I was inconvenienced on my work trip. The next day I tried to wear the other pair of trousers - the pair that had been hemmed - but the hem they had fixed had ALREADY come down. I took them back and they fixed within the day (thank you) but they still had the cheek to ask for £4 because of the zip issue on the other trousers. Feel really cheesed off because my week has been inconvenienced as I couldn't wear either pair of trousers for a period of time BUT they had the cheek to charge me for the inconvenience. Unhappy customer. For the sake of £4 I feel they made a bad error of judgement. NOT IMPRESSED.

The requested alteration was to shorten a new dress. I had pinned the hem roughly in position to indicate the desired length. The hem is now uneven which is obvious from the looking at the pattern at the bottom of the dress. As the dress has a line pattern this could have been followed to achieve an even hem. I will not use this service again. I am disappointed.

The first time i went into the shop to get my wedding dress taken out, i had to go by myself and as anyone knows who has tried a dress on its not easy at all and even worse by yourself, i thought the Staff would help me but no they didnt, they just said to try it on and then come out, the changing rooms are tiny, i struggled badly and the floor is filthy and my dress was all over it, as for taken it out, i cant fault this, it's been done just as i wanted, the second time i had to go in, all went gone but the third time has Put me of badly, i phoned first to See if my dress was ready to be picked up and the lady i spoke to was very un professional, i told her my name and she shouted to the lady who was doing my dress "its Natasha what ever she is called" so When the lady she shouted to came on the phone i said Hi its Natasha Wrigglesworth ... waiting for a reply and all i got was "yeah", telephone manners are not very good. Also When i did pick my dress up there was a Young man in there and to not See him out was rude, even When he shouted bye no one even replied to him. So i got my dress home and have just opened my dress bag and found my £90 veil folded at the bottom of my bag, not happy at all With that.

Having read the other reviews and as most satisfied customers just pay and leave, I felt it important to set the record straight. My 'other half' being quite small in stature, often needs to have clothes altered and uses Alterations Express regularly. She is so pleased with their always patient, friendly and helpful service and excellent work, that we make the 90 mile round trip from Scarborough just to use this shop. She has never had a single problem and is always delighted with their work!

I was only in York for the weekend but noticed the stitching on my coat was coming away so I popped in to Alterations Express hoping to possi ly leave my coat and have it repaired. The lady asked if I could wait 5 minutes, went away to the back and came back with it flawlessly repaired. I wasnt even charged for even though I tried to insist. You very rarely find customer service like this these days. Thanks so much
