REVIEWS OF Sew What? Alterations IN North Bay

I'm still so upset about my experience that this may sound more like a rant than a review. I was so completely overcharged for the alternations, that I was tempted to leave my dress. These ladies should be ashamed of themselves. The dress cut is crooked, the finishing stitch doesn't match the rest of the dress and the woman I dealt with was rude and defensive. I can't even explain how unprofessional this establishment is. Can you tell I won't be going back?

Alterations were fine, but I was very shocked at their cost. I had a bridesmaids dress altered and a small skirt made for my 6 week old daughter and the cost with tax was over $200 dollars. I will not be going back.

They are really awesome. I altered 3 Levi’s jeans from them and they are like as it is. And the lady who did the job is very kind and nice.

I had a zipper replaced on a pair of mens ski pants. The quality of the work was pretty good. What I am upset about is. I asked for a qoute. The owner wouldnt give one. I always check reviews before using a service to see if that service had had any issues. I skipped that as I was in a rush to have these done. No qoute on price and I almost had a heart attack on the phone when she called me to say the pants were done and the cost was $150.00. I will never use this busniess again. It is bad business in my opinion to not qoute a price, and give the option to not have the work done. When she called me...I thought she was calling with a qoute on price. Instead I was informed the work was done and the cost owing for the repair. Upon reading the reviews I see I am not the only person this has happened to. Bad business ethics. Shame on me for not demanding a qoute at the first red flag. Make sure you get a qoute in writing before you hand the garment over for repairs.

I recently had a sweater with a very small hole (approximately 3-4 cm). They advised me they would call me to let me know a price prior to completing job. I got a call saying it was completed and it was $20.00 plus tax because it had to be "crochet." I was very disappointed with this experience and will not be returning to this store or recommending it to my friends and family.

Unfortunately my experience here was very poor and slightly absurd. I brought a dress in to be hemmed, ~2 inches off the bottom. We always get our tailoring done at Tip Top Tailors in the Northgate mall because they do a wonderful job and the price is very reasonable for the job done (~$15-20/dress hem, $30 on more complicated hems). They said their seamstress was away and referred me to Sew What as an alternative as we need it by Friday afternoon (today is Tuesday morning) (which is a bit faster then normal, however Tiptop always gives a 1-2 week timeline, so this is not totally out of realm or possibility). When I brought my dress in, the lady (I assume the owner) took about 10-15 minutes helping me pin the hem up to approx. 2inches off the floor which I very much appreciated and did not expect - I figured I would just tell them how many inches I'd like it hemmed (as I had already confirmed this at home) and leave it with them, then she proceeded to tell me it would be $150 cost to be hemmed!!…... the dress was only $80 to buy! She said $110 is the normal price, and add $40 for the 'quick timeline' (4 days). I decided I just couldn't justify paying that, or even figure out the price difference between the two businesses. So I decided I was going to pass and ask my mom to help instead, because that price is just unacceptable, and my mom is a great seamstress (but did not want to add to her workload in the evenings). The owner THEN tells me that's fine, but I would need to pay her $25 for her PINNING THE DRESS before she would physically hand the dress back...... All in all she did not inform me of the price to 'pin' the dress beforehand.. which was unneeded in the first place because I knew it needed to be 2 inches hemmed, and the total price of a hem is ridiculous. More than the garment itself. I cannot speak to the work they do as we had never had anything actually altered there, but beware when you are bringing in items as you may get a charge without even having it altered! Very disappointed.

I feel robbed of $400 for a dress alteration. At the end of the day I took it to someone else (The Bridal Gallery - highly recommend) who un-did what was done to my dress and then altered it properly. Way over priced and made me feel like my alteration was an nuisance.

They did an amazing job replacing a concealed zipper in a little black dress for an gorgeous gold exposed zipper. This gave me more room to breathe as well as a beautiful new feature. They also flawlessly hemmed the dress as well as hemming and bringing in a skirt. Both were designer items, and now look even better than they did originally. Thank you! I wholeheartedly recommend these professionals.

Went in to get a romper hemmed, and it cost me 35$ ( to have less than an inch taken off) I had to pay before the alterations we’re done. Went to pick it up realized prices were 15$ and a customer paid after his things were hemmed. A complete rip off if you ask me.

I brought in my dog leash that extends 8m. It is for my 130lb dog and cost $120. It had a rip in the part that retracts. I specifically asked her (the owner) to place some thick material such as denim and sew it over the tear with heavy duty thread. I came back and she had taken it upon herself to cut almost 2 meters off my leash and reattach the end essentially shortening my leash by almost 1/3 and now creating 2 weak spots instead of one. When I told her this was not what I specifically asked her to do she tried to blame an employee that "had just left". Apparently she values the advice of her employee over the customer. Then she proceeded to patch my leash back together with the pieces she cut off. The sewing was so rushed and sloppy I had to send her back 3x to add more stitching. Which she used regular thread not heavy duty like I had asked. She just could not understand that this is supposed to hold back a 130lb dog and a couple passes with regular thread would not hold. The leash is made in the same manner as a seat belt is made, that's how strong it needs to be. Well it was our second walk when her terrible stitching let go. Luckily my dog didnt run into traffic. I had to spend $120 + tax to replace the leash which would never have happened if she had only listened to the customer and not a mysterious employee.

I asked her to fix some curtains and a valance for my daughters room. She did an excellent job and even sewed around a cut I had made to accommodate a double curtain rod, so it wouldn't fray or rip. Super quick and reasonably priced!
