I was hesitant on using a new tailor, but after seeing how conveniently close it was to home, I decided to try J Matthew Alterations. I gave him a call and he was able to schedule me in, immediately. Arriving there, from the get go, he was very professional and listened attentively, asking questions to my needs and then clarifying. Very well price for the quality of labor that goes in the garments. The attention to details and modern style he puts into his work, feels like your wearing a very expensive suit. I purchased my suits online, and after he was done with them, they felt and looked like custom made suits. My experience with J Matthew Alterations, was phenomenal, and even with the ice storm in Kansas City he managed to deliver my suits on time.

Although I loved my interactions with J Matthew Alterations, I did not have a good experience. I needed a bridesmaid dress hemmed with a 3 day turnaround. I agreed to pay the rush fee bringing the total to around $110. When I arrived to pick up my dress 3 days later he confessed that he forgot about my dress. No big deal, in just over an hour he had me out of there with a hemmed dress (I did not receive my rush fee payment back). The issue was, the dress was not properly hemmed. The dress dragged on the ground, a good 3 to 4 inches, the entire outdoor wedding. I was constantly holding it up to walk and move. All for a service I paid a lot of money for.

Presenting my experience as succinctly and factually as possible. The first two photos are the dress when I bought it, and the other four are the dress the night I took it home, samples of some of the stitch work, and myself in the dress on the day he gave it back to me. Tldr; J Matthew delivered an unwearable dress to me, weeks after the day I was supposed to wear it. I would not recommend taking beaded, pleated, or stylistically draped dresses to him. I can't speak to his knowledge base with other types of garments. He had my dress for fifteen weeks, and I went home with it almost five weeks after the day it was supposed to be worn. It had poorly rendered alterations, missing beadwork, and low quality stitching that I wouldn't expect from an industry professional. The dress was taken to another seamstress who could only save the beaded pieces, and recreated the rest of the dress. Despite stating that he would get me taken care of regarding a refund/reimbursement, he has not responded to any form of contact since receiving all the documents he asked for on Sept. 29th. --- I took my dress to the Tailor of Kansas City/J Matthew Alterations, on August 18th, 2020. The requested alterations consisted of: 1. Hemming of the dress, including front bead panel, to match my height. 2. Converting the back to a v back. 3. Converting the neckline to a v neck. 4. Saving of any/all scraps from the garment for my own purposes. 5. Completion in time for a Nov. 11, 2020 wedding. J Matthew said that he could readily provide all requested alterations within the given time frame. Throughout the course of his services, we had six meetings scheduled for the dress, one of them over video call and one cancelled last minute by J Matthew. The rest of the appointments were predominantly me waiting 20-40min while he prepared alterations for me to view, lending a impression of my dress having been forgotten somewhere in his schedule. My fiance and I wound up rescheduling our wedding to 2021, a detail which was not disclosed to J Matthew until he scheduled our fourth appointment on Nov 12th, the day after I was supposed to wear the dress as initially stated during our first consultation. I took my dress home on Dec 4th. The quality and state of the alterations was questionable coming from a professional tailor. When worn, the dress did not sit evenly across my bust, one side hanging lower than the other. Visible areas of beadwork were missing, and the beaded front panel was hemmed unevenly, leaving visible gathers on the sides and very loose hand stitching on the inside of the gown going through the lining. Other areas of handstitching on the inside lining came undone after a brief hand inspection with no sharp implement present. There was a single closed seam among the alterations, present on the converted V backline, with the rest looking to be hand stitched with either an inconsistent stitch in thread that did not match the gown's fabric. The strapless invisi-bra purchased to go with the dress could no longer be worn with it. The new neckline, an uneven U shape that was not consistent from right cup to left cup, removed the "invisi" factor from it. The bottom hemline was an inconsistent height when worn, and the seam itself was not even all around. Additional beads fell off the dress during the second to last final fitting, and the final hand off. Currently I'm in a prolonged discussion with J Matthew regarding refund/reimbursement for services provided. I emailed him with the full list of things he requested to process a refund on September 29th, 2021, as well as several follow up attempts via email and text since. As of Nov. 3rd, I still have had zero response in regards to resolving this situation. I'll readily update this review should things change.

I found Jay Matthew to be a great person, however his lack of communication and planning throughout the experience is what needs to be shared! I had my wedding dress altered, and it was the only stress I had for the entire wedding! If you do not stay on top of everything yourself, it will not get completed properly! I scheduled appointments that were cancelled or rescheduled 1 hour before I was supposed to be there, on many occasions. What I thought was a final fitting ended up turning into an hour or more appointment with him completing alterations while I was there! When I showed up to an appointment, that was the majority of where the alterations were happening. My dress was hemmed too short to fix and I only got it 9 days before my wedding after being told I would have it at least a month before my event! I believe Jay does great work with making custom clothing, however alterations are more frequent. Please stop advertising as bridal alterations if a bride cannot trust her tailor to make it everything she wanted and on the scheduled time line that was promised! Jay did partially reimburse me for all of the trouble, which was very much appreciated. However, I would NOT recommend for your WEDDING DRESS!

He was very knowledgeable of current suit fashions which was helpful since this was my first time getting one altered. Absolutely the worst experience I have ever had with getting clothing altered. I had an event in the middle of March to attend. I was proactive and dropped off my dress on January 14. J Matthew informed me that he would have the dress ready to be picked up on February 25. The dress needed to be taken in from the top and the hips. He informed me that he has done this “a million times” and it would be no issue. I texted him a day before I needed to pick up my dress to confirm the pickup and he did not get back to me. He then called me day of, after having over a month to work on this dress, 30 minutes before I was scheduled to pick up the dress and asked to have another day to work on the dress. It was obvious that he hadn’t even started to work on the dress. I go to pick up the dress the next day, and he made me wait 30 MINUTES before bringing the dress out, with the excuse that he had to “break down the zipper”. He had to continue to make alterations to the dress while I was there, and I ended up staying at his shop for 2 hours while he tried to alter it, where he then determined that he needed the weekend to make a final repair. I agreed to give him until Monday. I had to leave for my event that Wednesday, which he was made aware of in January. When Monday arrived, he again made me wait 30 minutes while he worked on the dress and it was very apparent that he had not even worked on the dress over the weekend. Again I had to leave and come back the next day. The next day, the dress was huge at the top-bigger than when I had brought it in, and it was so short that I was not appropriately covered. He had completely messed the dress up and hadn’t done the alterations I previously needed. He used white thread on a fuchsia dress and you could see the seams on the outside and while I walked. I told him I was extremely frustrated and dissatisfied so he once again tried to fix his mess but then came out and told me his “needle broke”. He claimed later on that he tried to ask me to repair the dress, which he did not! I was also leaving for my event the very next day, so I had no more time to give to this man to fix my dress after he had 2 MONTHS to do so. He left me with a horrible, ugly, broken dress. I asked him to refund me the money for the dress since he ruined it so badly it was not fixable (I took it to another seamstress and she was so shocked and said she had never seen worse work) and he refused to refund me. I had to find a new dress and get it altered in 2 days because of the mess that J Matthew created. He since has not returned any of my texts or calls. Overall, J Matthew is the worst alterations shop I have ever been to. He is extremely unprofessional, cocky, and rude. He makes you pay in the beginning so once he receives his payment, he does not care about your satisfaction. He canceled on me multiple times, did not work on my dress until I was in the store to pick up, and straight up lied to me multiple times. He is overpriced as well. DO NOT GO HERE. I cannot stress this enough-absolute worst experience I have ever had with a business and HORRIBLE alterations. All the bad reviews of his shop are hidden, so please look through them all before making the decision to come here. My experience is not the only one-there are so many like it. HORRIBLE.

I received absolutely terrible service. I dropped off 5 suits which took over 3 months to receive back. This tailor canceled my appointments for pick up same day on 4 separate occasions. On a fifth occasion I was supposed to pick up all 5 suits and when I arrived at the shop I was told he only had 2 finished which he did while I sat in his shop an hour after my appointment time. When he finally dropped my last 3 suits off I realized he never even tailored one of the 3 jackets. It's not worth contacting to have this jacket finished. I expect to receive some lip service response similar to the other 1 star reviews posted. Believe me everything they said in those reviews I experienced as well. Stay away from this business!!
