My experience from start to finish at Safa Tailoring was terrible. Zia was rushed and distracted at each appointment and did not listen to what I needed altered on my dress. I had a dress with a small tear at the back, which also needed to be hemmed and taken out approximately an inch at the waist. He was confident he would be able to fix it.
After my first fitting, I went home and cried. The back of the dress has lace detail that was ruined and he added mesh to the back, making it 3 sizes too big, when originally it fit like a glove. He kept telling me it looked “fine” and tried to brush off my opinion. He then said, “You must have lost weight.” I had not lost any weight since my initial meeting with him, he simply did not listen to what needed to be done. Now the dress needed to be taken in to fit again. This repeated at each appointment, the next time I came in, he had taken the dress in too much and then it could not be done up. Zia completely ruined the back lace/mesh detailing on the back of my dress. The mesh that he added was white, instead of nude like the rest of my dress and it didn’t lay flat or match the rest of the lace on the dress (the lace on my dress was ivory, he added white). His response to this was, “Nobody will look at the back, look how nice it is at the front.” He used white thread on nude mesh and paid little attention to detail.
At this point I was extremely frustrated, he then tried to offer me a sample dress he received for free from a designer to replace my original dress. This dress was three sizes too small and he claimed that he could “fix it” for me. He wanted to charge me an additional $200.00 dollars on top of the $800.00 he was already charging me for the dress he ruined. If anything, at this point, he should have been offering to reimburse me for the gown he ruined, not charging me more for another dress that didn’t fit. I have never been in a situation where a seamstress has been so careless with their work on such an important piece of clothing, to the point where he tried to offer me an entirely new dress, to make up for his sloppy efforts in repairing my original gown. He attempted to pressure me into accepting the new gown, I declined this offer.
I secured a second seamstress and showed them pictures of the original gown and the damage he had done to it. They were appalled by his work and said it would be difficult to fix in such a short period of time before my wedding.
I had to go back to Safa Tailoring a total of six times for fittings before walking out with my ruined wedding gown and my maid of honour's gown, which was also altered incorrectly. He followed me out of the shop apologizing and trying to now “give” me the other sample dress as opposed to charging me for it, in an attempt to get me to “be happy.” I only have 3 weeks left before my wedding and ended up having to purchase a second gown and get it altered elsewhere.
