CMU is a fantastic school. I went there 40 years ago but come back to visit every year, and it just keeps getting better. Now, everyone will say that about their Alma Mater, but honestly, the level to which CMU improves year to year is on par with any of the top-rated schools. The education you get here is excellent, and will serve you well if you apply yourself. It is also high-stress, so this kind of education is not for the faint-of-heart, but when you survive long enough to graduate, there is NOTHING you can't do!

My son won many math and science state and national awards during his high school years. He got into CMU SCS in 2014. He is so very happy there. The atmosphere is really great for students who wish to learn, work hard with academics. He made lots of new friends at CMU who really appreciate math and sciences. They do geeky stuff for fun, such as doing puzzle hunts, creating video game, robotics or playing Quidditch. Excellent professors take a real interest in student learning and regularly have lunches with students. I will wholeheartedly recommend this school to others!

I attended CMU for graduate school four years ago, and it's a shame it hasn't worked to fix any of its problems. The University at large caters to the elite, and is not accessible to anyone coming from a less than upper class background (it's nearly impossible to even eat a meal on campus for under $20.) The faculty and staff as a whole seem embittered for reasons I will never quite understand, it could be the environment as a whole which is consistently hostile in temperature and mood. The student body is only concerned with working for Google or Pixar, hardly much of a place for other forms of research. Disappointed that my Alma mater wasn't a good fit, and seems like a school destined to cause others damage down the line.

In 1990 Carnegie Mellon U. appeared on PBS as students were working on robotics operating a pizza shop. Some former family friend's sent their daughter to CMU it was a big deal for them. Their daughter was a C average student with a portfolio who chose to study costume design at CMU for 4 years. I would much rather study robotics and would love to walk into a calzone shop and see robots in action making dough and assembling and baking the calzone. I don't care for the world my mother inhabits and those former family friends bug me what they do to improve their prestige and status [what a waste of time, honestly]. "Now Tommy you need to wear this costume for this play." The fabric needs to go here and not there and be this color. Why should I care. I don't like the humanities and art is not such a big deal to me that I'd like to NOT learn and figure out a single about science/technology. I think my mother is bored by the Hubble telescope. We don't really get along. Does anyone from that documentary remember the robotics project. I have no idea why engineering students are required to take humanities classes meanwhile the humanities students dont have to take a single challenging class

School of Computer Science is the crown jewel of CMU. Even with 200 faculty members, it only enrolls 200 undergraduates each year. So the students are as good as those in Stanford, MIT, HPY. CMU is ranked number one in Computer Sciences by research papers. If your kids are determined to pursue CS major, this could be a better choice than most Ivy colleges. FYI, computer engineering major is not within SCS. The say it’s next to impossible to transfer into SCS from other six schools in CMU.

Only took a online $10 course but it was pretty good (in French). I think I learned a lot. It is Canadian French which is a bit different than the French they speak in France. I would like to take a Portuguese course there too (Brazilian) but they don't have one yet. They do have one in Spanish though.

Do people in the liberal arts deserve to make more money than Engineering students just because they go to CMU and places like this. Is there some kind of massive delusion that actually studying really hard and working over eighty hours Per week should deserve much less pay. Students in the humanities and arts are usually lazy and uptight and trying to hide the fact that they do not want to work very hard. I am surprised by the level of stupiditet going on in general in the entire country. The arrogance that people use liberal arts degrees to basically turn others who even cant afford to work two or three jobs and cant attend community College so these people can even assert some kind of superiority complex and constant social comparison because they got into this school is ridiculous. And what is the Big deal about art. There is enough. You really dont need a degree in art. Its not like something bad is going to happen if someone didnt know what they were doing. Its not like an artist is better than a nuclear power company employee. Who cant make mistakes at work. Does anyone get it. Plato is right about the allegory of a Cave. You dont need a degree to read a book and enjoy learning. You dont need some kind of validation of others that what you say has any meaning if someone else told you exactly what to say and you got some kind of grade you are therefore better than someone else. And you dont know what the sine of thirty degrees is all about yet you must be better because your bank account says so

Super expensive school, and there is no reason to go this school unless you major in computer thingy. Maybe business school...? but still not that wise choice. You can go NYC business schools rather than the school in Pittsburgh. Anyway, I cannot give the good score for this school. Too expensive for the education. However, I must mention that computer science program is super good and they deserve that tuition.
