Before attending Grandview, I had high hopes regarding my learning experience however , that all changed once I settled in the new environment. For starters, the physical education department is by far the WORST department of individuals that do not provide a structured curriculum for students to physically develop in. The teachers display little to no effort in engaging students as they just chat with another constantly, and use verbal threats as their main way to get student to follow their instructions. The program consists of boring activities and constant running outside regardless of the weather status, and it seems the teachers have zero to no compassion and or empathy regarding students opinions and feelings. Workouts in the weight room lack serious variety and most of the time, kids do their own thing as the teachers are too careless to supervise and engage with the students. A major concern regarding the department is that majority of the teachers show up 5 to 10 minutes late on a regular basis to their designated class and when they finally arrive, no apology is ever given out towards the students for compromising their learning time. Activities are organized in the last minute with little care for students opinions and thoughts regarding what they will be participating in. Some instances, I have witnessed PE teachers go as far as verbally abusing students for such minor issues including not wearing gym suitable clothing and headwear which is apparently not prohibited within the gyms premise. I have consulted with many other students and they share the same hatred I have for the department and its methods of teaching kids. They conduct a week long dance unit that takes place before Christmas break that is absolutely appalling as no one is engaged and dance is taught to students through a video game and outside of dance class. The teachers are so bad that majority of the leadership class, leads lessons with much more integrity then all the teachers. If students refuse to listen, the teachers immediately resort to verbal harassment towards students and I have personally witnessed a teacher get in a kids face and start yelling at him just over a simple question he had. All of the teachers seem to use a commanding tone of voice and almost treat students as dogs by ordering them to do every little thing even things that would be considered common sense. The PE department also regularly hold kids in after the designated dismissal time for the class and if one asked to leave or complains, the teachers get very angry and aggressive towards that student which is unacceptable of a professional to do to a student. All the teachers tend to preach about different things kids should be doing, but they do not actively demonstrate any of those and are quite harsh when it comes to just a littlest of things. If a PE teacher likes a particular sport/activity, they will be particularly strict about it and will revolve the curriculum around what they like disregarding students opinions and thoughts. I have also witnessed teachers kicking kids off and separating students from their desired team for an activity, just so the teachers can form a team with each other and participate in the sport or activity .When in reality they should be teaching and assisting kids while trying to create a positive environment not participating and compromising the lesson for the students. Throughout the dance unit, the department would lock all exits leaving the gym and deprive kids from using the washroom and getting a drink of water even if they had too. However, there is one exception regarding the athletic department that being the head director, Mr. Masi. He excels at his job as he shows respect to his students and always seems to be greatly engaged in his students development. I could state many more negative things, but overall the PE department is absolutely atrocious and made P.E at Grandview a horrific and dreadful experience. Also, all the other departments are below expectations but the P.E department really stands out in a negative way.
