A true hidden gem in Richmond! Tucked away in the industrial park by No 6 Road, this place serves up great food at reasonable prices. Beautiful presentation, good portion and tasty, too! First went here for Dine Out Festival years ago with some friends and they are still good today. We recently ordered their pastas and seafood which was delicious - and travelled well for take out! I also recommend their Steak, Osso Bucco and Spring Salad. Put this on your list next time you’re in the area.

Came here for dineout with my friends. The location is a little bit out of the way and quite cozy. I had made a reservation two weeks in advance, so had no trouble getting a seat, but reservation is definitely recommended. I couldnt get a spot the previous year. Their dineout also comes with free bread and I have to say, their bread is one of THE BEST bread I have ever had. It was super fresh...the outside was crunchy and the inside was super moist. We asked for seconds! The appetizers were really good as well. The Chowder had an asian taste to it that I really liked. The entree was good and the dessert was also good. Definitely will come back again, though probably not often as it is a bit out of the way. Highly recommend!

Sooooooo, best hidden gem for traditional no non-sense western food! When the app is around $15 and mains can get up to $50, there's expectations to meet, and this place delivers. The material quality is top notch, aged meat, fresh lobsters are definitely worth the asking price. Seafood risotto uses real and fresh crab meat, scallop, fish - no canned, no fake substitue here. Charcoal grilled meat yet controlled to how well you like it. All veggies are fresh, no brown edges. The way I would put it is the price reflects the material and the preparation/cooking is pretty much free. Well deserve for many rounds to come for me.

First day for Dineout Vancouver! We read some reviews and this seemed to be a great start... and having lobster as an appie piqued my interest. We started with that and it was delicious. Very well cooked and exactly how you want lobster, succulent and juicy! It also came with a corn cake aka cornbread pancake. Unexpectedly good! Next up was their grilled miso cod with vegetables. The skin was nicely grilled and crispy while keeping the rest of the fish just right. We also order the duck breast which was excellent. Cooked well and not overdone. The sauce had a greatly earthy taste that complemented the duck well. Lastly, we had the mango blueberry panna cotta. Wow! Fresh mango and the custard was perfect. Not overly sweet and the fresh mango was delicious. Also ordered the chocolate soufflé which was a bit dry and overcooked :( All in all, a great meal and looking forward to coming again.

Mandy is a very good hostess. Attentive, your questions properly answered and always make sure your glass of water filled. To start, I had avocado and crab salad. Nicely presented, fresh and just right portion. The baguet came crispy, warm with fresh butter. Lovely. My friend seafood soup had lobster, prawn and scallop. He finished it up fast, so must be good. We shared calamari served on bed of greens. I wished it's a little bit crispier though. My entree was beef tenderloin and lobster tail done to my liking. My dining companion had black cod. Each entree came with buttered mashed potatoes and baby green beans beautifully done. My panna cota with mango and blueberry so yummy to end my huge meal.

Used to be excellent (See comment below). Now price went up, service dropped. Food quality dropped a notch. So price/performance really went south significantly. Previous review (2017) Excellent price performance ratio. Had seafood alfredo for $13-14 with salmon, big scallops, 3 medium size shrimps. Taste Gd too. Linguini tomato sauce is Gd too. Must try is cheese cake - home made. Service v Gd. Above is from dinner menu. Lunch menu is completely different to cater for office crowd

We used to almost frequent this restaurant but they started having strange business hours. Often they wouldn't be open at the hours/days the sign in the window stated. It got to the point we just stopped trying. This evening we had a craving for a couple of our old favorites so we called to make sure they would actually be open. We were surprised to see they were. We had a pleasant meal at a price as palatable as the dishes we ordered. (I suggest the pork with tofu and cabbage in garlic sauce; one of the best we've had in the lower mainland) The restaurant was clean and the service was satisfactory. We'll go back again now... just going to make sure they are actually open first until our confidence is restored.

The Shoestring Cafe is the neighborhood restaurant everyone wishes they had around the corner from their home. This family-owned restaurant is the perfect balance between casual and fine dining. It's a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere - in the Crestwood Industrial area of northeast Richmond. Once you've tried it though, you'll quickly realize this is one of the best places to have lunch or early dinner within a 10 km radius. The other eateries in the neighborhood (sandwich shops and noodles houses) aren't even in the same league. Shoestring serves upscale comfort food in a welcoming atmosphere with attentive and prompt service. It's perfect for an upscale lunch. You have to try their hearty seafood corn chowder, pasta dishes, and their grilled steak (with shoestring potatoes, of course). All their dishes are well-prepared, delicious, and attractive. The prices are affordable (main courses range from $10-15) and the portions are just right - small enough to finish, but large enough to make you satisfied. Shoestring is a real windfall for anyone near this area of Richmond. Speaking with the chef-owner, he reveals he developed his craft through decades of work in B.C., California, and overseas. Honestly, this place feels like it's a Yaletown restaurant scaled down to fit the suburban business hub in East Richmond. Pleasantly surprised and highly recommended!

I never review but this was so good I just had to. Pictures speak for themselves. Hidden gem in a warehouse office strip area! Rich food served slowly so don't try and come here if you want fast food. We had the dungeness crab and avocado salad, veal osso bucco, duck, and chocolate souffle...my absolute favorite dessert on earth and they did it right!!

Late post for Dineout2020. Shoestring Cafe is such a hidden gem in Richmond. The place is small so reservations are a must. The food is great too. For starters, I ordered the grilled chipotle marinated lobster tail with corn cake. Sadly it was half of a lobster tail but very delicious and tasty. The corn cake and salad complimented the grilled lobster nicely. Although, it was marinated with chipotle, it wasn't too spicy. I ordered the grilled blackened NY steak, medium of course. And it was perfect, especially with that sweet carrot puree. The steak was tender and juicy. I ended the meal with the chocolate souffle, paired with vanilla ice cream. The souffle was as is should be: light and fluffy, not too sweet. This three course meal for $35 was definitely worth it. But then outside of dineout, the food at Shoestring Cafe is always worth it.

I made a reservation 3 weeks in advance to have Christmas dinner with my family. There was a large party having a company Christmas party there taking up half the restaurant and the noise level was absolutely unbearable. People were drunk and screaming and it was so loud I couldn’t even hear my mom who was sitting right beside me. The tables beside us also had the same concerns with the noise levels. I told the server of my concerns and all she said was “you can get up to leave or you can stay, it is like this every day leading up to Christmas.” I have never tried this restaurant and never plan to.

Nice restaurant. Black cod was great, but steak is a bit underwhelming as it’s a HKong style rib eye. I would recommend a NY Ribeye - thicker cut. All in all a good restaurant and I’ll be back.

Been to the restaurant twice and the service was always amazing. Waiter is very knowledgeable and helpful, and will double check the kitchen thoroughly to ensure any allergy concerns. The food is absolutely divine - have tried many different dishes and they never disappoint. The Seafood Curry is top notch, and the Lobster Avacado Salad is a must.

This restaurant is a hidden gem. Located in an industrial/office area of Richmond, it serves some of the best food we've had in a restaurant in some time. My wife is a big seafood lover, and says the calamari was the best she's ever had her lobster tail and seafood risotto wasn't far behind. My caesar salad was excellent and my grilled rack of pork was juicy and tender, served with a port wine sauce. Their service was attentive and friendly, and the staff was very familiar with the menu. Overall, very highly recommended!

I’ve been to Shoestring Cafe 4 times since discovering it in September of this year. There were times when the place was so busy there was no “quiet” place to sit. The tables are close together and sometimes you hear other people’s conversations. As another reviewer mentioned about a Christmas party being there it was loud. But, they were having fun and enjoying themselves. However, if you’ve ever eaten here you will not even care what’s going on around you. The food is amazing, portions are big and the chocolate soufflé is something you dream about. Go there and eat the food. You will want more.

Service and staff are great! Food was served relatively fast and staff were very friendly and helpful with explaining the menu/specials. Food wise, it was alright. It was pretty much a fancy version of Hong Kong cafe. You get a fairy decent amount of food, but taste wise...just like what you would get from a HK cafe. Some say that the price is pricy, but if you got the 3 course meal (your choice of starter, main, and dessert - you pay the price of the main course with an additional $14 for appetizer and dessert... Saving a couple bucks), the price isn't so bad. I personally wasn't a fan of the sauce they use with the steak...it tasted a bit weird. My ribeye was cooked perfectly the way I liked. Not sure if the grill/smokie flavour was actually from a grill or it was just liquid smoke, but overall not bad. Large portions of veggies which they were alright (corn on the cob was super sweet and delicious). Appetizer, I had the calamari, it was alright...not a fan of onions (which it was covered in) and didn't seem to had very meaty squid. Dessert, was probably my favorite out of the other dishes. I got the chocolate soufflé (with vanilla ice cream). Do not expect a soufflé, but more of a super airy and moist chocolate cake...which was very good and pairs really well with the vanilla ice cream. Overall, not bad of a place.

I was too excited to eat foie gras and forgot to take soup. . All the food is so delicious! Trust me. You will not regret it if you come, if you are a person who knows how to eat, you will regret it if you don't come to this restaurant! correct. Such dishes as foie gras must be reserved. . I happened to have a friend tell me that they had an appointment with foie gras, so I made one. . . The friend who rushed over lost his share because it was added. I was reluctant to score a little bit for him. . Thank goodness we got there early. Apparently the place was almost all reserved. I had seen good things and reviews about this place. Decided to take my wife there for dinner tonight. I'm so glad we did. We got there and we were seated right away. Our server went over our options and gave us a little tip on the extras we could get if we didn't want to go with the special for the evening. We decided to order the tiger prawns for my wife and the Dungeness crab and avocado salad for me to start. My wife and I ordered the grilled ribeye for the main entree. And for dessert the chocolate souffle. ROLL ME OUT!! Let me say the salad was perfect in size and taste. Fresh seafood and the avocado was tasty. Check the pictures. The ribeye had some nice grill marks and the accompanying mushroom sauce was delicious. Medium rare! The chocolate souffle was intensely sweet but light and fluffy. A perfect way to end the meal. Fyi they aren't licensed yet as of March 29, 2018 and they are only open for dinner 5pm-10pm. We will be back to try their other dishes. Thank you Shoestring Cafe.

The foood was excellent and the service top notch. Definitely recommend it to anyone looking for somewhere new to eat. My wife and I went here for our anniversary as she wanted somewhere new. Found it on yelp and had excellent reviews. They are well deserved. The location is not where one would expect to find a good restaurant but it is excellent.

This was my second time visiting this restaurant. My first time was for dinner and I had a wonderful seafood stew with saffron cream sauce. It was chock full of deliciously prepared seafood (mussels, prawns, salmon, plump oysters) all served on a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes with garlic toast. I would definitely have it again if it appears on the specials menu again! For an appetizer, I tried the calamari. Not your traditional calamari, flash fried and then pan fried with a garlic/onion sauce. Super yummy. Today, I had the set lunch that included a soup of the day-creamy potato and bacon, an entree (pork cutlet served with curry sauce, rice and vegetables, and a drink (coffee, tea, soda). The soup was good. The curry was full of rich flavour. I would definitely recommend it and have it again when I go back. Give this unassuming restaurant a try! The food has been consistently delicious and a very good value. A gem on No. 6 road!!

Compared to some of the upscale downtown restaurants, the food here wins hands down. This isn't the place for a fancy ambience or a view though. The scallops and prawns in my seafood risotto were fresh. Even the tomato sauce tasted freshly made. I adored the chocolate soufflé and vanilla ice cream with real vanilla beans. This was the best meal out I've had in a while for $39.

A hole in the wall or rather a hole in an industrial area, this is one of those gems that you will be back for more. Best to come here to try it out yourself during Dine out Vancouver. Me and my friend visited this place for the first time on Friday evening. The location is not ideal in Richmond but it was surprisingly busy. People come just for food from here. We got the freshly baked bread with homemade shrimp paste and butter, steamed mussels with white wine, black cod fillet and duck breast. The main courses came with their homemade pumpkin puree, which was mild and creamy, it went along with the vegetables well. The ingredients they used were very fresh and everything cooked well. The restaurant owner and server there are very nice, their services are pretty good too! Highly recommend this place!

I had dinner at Shoestring Cafe during a weeknight in early June, 2019. Located in a rather out-of-the-way place, in a nondescript strip mall, this restaurant does not disappoint. On the evening of my visit, this restaurant was lightly patronized (no wait for a table). I enjoyed seafood chowder and miso-glazed cod. Both dishes were fine. Recommended.

Don't like Taiwanese food or crappy and overpriced subs? Shoestring Cafe is your saviour! Quality is good and portions are big. Nice, if not conventional, decor. Butter Chicken was very tasty and filling, not much more money than Buns Master's goo down the street. Service is very friendly! I am happy to have a restaurant in the area with a more varied menu.

The place is very neighbourhood style, but the food is very authentic and professionally done. Its French style with a bit of Chinese twist is very original. Salt & pepper calamari is addicting; chowder is full of real seafood; deep fried lobster so flavourful chewy but not oily. Excellent chef!

Tiny restaurant tucked away in commercial area of Richmond. First time here during Dine Out and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the dishes and good service. The photos speak for themselves. We enjoyed the seafood chowder, scallop thermidor, thick cut of pork, and flavorful steak. Loved that they had chocolate souffle as a dessert option. Good COVID-19 measures in place, from checking i.d., to the clear panels separating the tables. Don't let the location and outer aesthetic deter you from this gem.

I eat here frequently and all occasions have exceeded my expectations. The service is accommodating and very friendly. The chef is very talented and has been in the business for over 20 years. My personal favs are the rib eye steaks and chocolate souflee. I'd recommend making a reservation as this place is cozy and becoming more and more popular. Don't be surprised if the restaurant is fully booked. It's that good.

Came with salad and very fresh garlic toast. Great start. Bread with Shrimp Butter: A creative inventive way to flavor bread. Was delicious. Miso glazed Black Cod and seasonal veggies: This dish was truly flawless!! The black cod was cooked perfectly and so soft and buttery. The vegetables were so fresh! The dish was a balance of colors. In fact, if you take a picture of this vibrant dish, it is the closest thing a restaurant has come to meeting Canada's food guide suggestions verbatim I have ever encountered. This is how real food should be! Wow. Chocolate souffle and vanilla ice cream: classy presentation, high quality ice cream, and delicious light chocolate souffle. This place is a treasure for sure. All food should be like this. Their food glows with vibrance. Real food still exists and it is found here.

We had the best time here! The food was absolutely incredible. We tried the quail and scallop to start, the steak and duck for main, and the flan and Panna colla for dessert. Every bite was out of this world! The owner Wendy is also the nicest person. We can’t wait to come back to see her and try the soufflé! Today, as recommended by Fairchild radio FM 96.1 DJ, me and Ling dine out at this cafe, We ordered seafood chowder and calamari as appertizers - taste are good, but. Chowder is a little bit salty, rib eye steak and seafood stew as main course, no complaints and tasty. Lastly, the desserts are awesome. Thanks so much shoestring cafe and we'll be back again.????

We came here for the Dine Out Vancouver 2020 menu tonight. First time dining here and looked forward to a good dinner. Driving here it's a bit out of the way in a light industrial area. We were quickly seated as we had reservations and we were a few minutes early. Shortly after, the restaurant was quite full. We ordered: - appetizer: Grilled Chipotle Marinated Lobster Tail and Corn Cake - this was really good. The lobster tail the the corn cake was really delicious with the marinated sauce. With a small salad it was a great start - entree1: Pan Roasted Duck Breast - I really love duck, especially from Chinese restaurants, but this very tasty with the sauce that was provided on the dish. - entree2: Black Alaska Cod - first bite of this, I was in love I do love eating fish and this was quite rich tasting but it was very tender and melted happily at each bite. - dessert1: Panna Cotta - I really liked this dessert as it was not overly sweet really paired well with mango and bluberry - dessert 2 - chocolate soufflé with ice cream - I had a couple bites and it was ok only because soufflé was a smidge over baked. It was a bit harder than expected. Great start to Dine Out Vancouver, in Richmond. I would recommend.

What a rare gem! Spectacular food, cozy ambiance, heartwarming service. Came here on a Tuesday at 5:30 and the place already had a couple tables. The server kindly sat us down and showed us the menu and specials on the wall. What we ordered: -Complimentary bread: Best homemade bread I've ever had paired with the shrimp butter, fluffy, warm, ADDICTIVE! -Crab avocado tower: huge chunks of fresh sweet crab on top of a bed of creamy avocado, paired with a slice of lemon for a nice citrusy kick -Lobster tail pancake: Juicy lobster with a bisque-like sauce on a corn pancake, what a unique combo! -Shoestring potatoes: hand cut by the chef into uniform strings and then fried to perfection, not greasy with amazing texture -Lamb Rack: I ordered medium well because I prefer more cooked, but the lamb was tender and juicy. The highlight was their house made black pepper mushroom gravy which completed the entire dish. -Chocolate souffle: I couldn't have asked for a better dessert to finish off an amazing meal. Slightly crispy around the edges, fluffy and steaming hot with an oozing lava centre. Served with vanilla ice cream which was an excellent contrast. By the time we left, the restaurant was full! Overall, portions were generous (had lots of food packed up), food was perfect, very very reasonable price, and the service was great! I don't think there is a better western restaurant in Greater Vancouver that hits all the points as well as Shoestring Cafe.

Food: 10/10 Service: 8/10 Price: $35 (Dine out) Absolutely amazing dine out experience. This place actually gives you what they normally have on their menu, but for dine out Vancouver prices! If you have been disillusioned by dine out because you keep finding out most high end restaurants actually just serve you sub-par quality food for dine out, then be disappointed no more. For the first course, we got the lobster and quail. Definitely choose the lobster. It's half a tail, but it is absolutely fresh and succulent. (We went to Vancouver Fish Company, and we were served frozen, overcooked lobster.) For the second course we got the duck breast. Delicious, and quite a generous portion too. For dessert, I would recommend the flan.

Great "hidden gem". Cosy room with a comfy casual feel. The food is terrific; what home cooking would be if your Mom was a Cordon Bleu chef! Our appies were the scallops thermador and the seafood and corn chowder, both rich and delicious! My main was the duck, cooked perfectly with a nice fig jus. My wife had salmon, also great. Awesome meal with pleasant, friendly service even though it was very busy with Dine Out. We will definitely be back!

I found this restaurant from Yelp. It is a family style restaurant. When my daughter stood outside of the cafe, she didn't like it because she wanted to find a fancy restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. After we tried their food there, my daughter changed her mind. We all loved this place. I ordered a 3-course dinner which was seafood & corn chowder, Grilled lobster & seafood risotto and chocolate souffle. My husband ordered Grilled aged New York steak (around 12 oz). My daughter ordered Chicken Alfredo. Their homemade bread was warm and soft inside and crispy outside. Lobster and Steak were juicy, fresh and big. We all loved their desserts. Comparing with the other fancy restaurants in Richmond, their food is amazing and their price is reasonable.

We went on Valentine’s Day and it was a bit crowded. ( I’m not sure what is the normal situation) I had an appointment and waited for 10+min to sit. We ordered the scallops as starter, seafood fettuccine and roast duck breast as main, and chocolate soufflé as dessert. All of them are very fresh and tasty. The food portion is good. I recommend their food. Regarding the service, however, maybe because of the high volume, we were asked by three different waitresses about what drink we want… and the water was still not on our table even after we finished the free bread. This got me a bit annoyed. Other than that, their service is good. I will go back to try other dishes for sure.

This is my mom's favourite restaurant. My auntie comes here about twice a week. Everything on the menu is delicious and is great for its value. May I suggest the Quail and the seafood fettuccine. I've never seen a seafood fettuccine with so much...seafood! The clams were also done so nicely! The sauce was tasty and ingredients were fresh. They don't own a liquor license which can be a bummer for some people. But I don't think you'll miss it much with the amazing chocolate soufflé they have waiting for you. I can see why this is everyone's favourite hidden gem.

This is a great hidden gem of a restaurant quite a ways out from Richmond city center. The prices here are a bit higher than other fusion restaurants but you get huge portions to compensate. If you are going on the weekend, I highly suggest making a reservation as they tend to pack up quite fast. The food itself is also great. The dishes come with perfectly charred peppers and corn cob. The chicken alfredo was juicy but still filled with flavour from grilled spices. Not too cheesy like the pasta from Spaghetti Factory either. They also offer other full course dishes that we didn't get to try this time around.

I went here during my Christmas break. The food was excellent, I am a big fan of chocolate soufflé. The only point is that the lady with short hair seems like she needs more training on how to be a waitress.

This was my second time visiting this restaurant. My first time was for dinner and I had a wonderful seafood stew with saffron cream sauce. It was chock full of deliciously prepared seafood (mussels, prawns, salmon, plump oysters) all served on a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes with garlic toast. I would definitely have it again if it appears on the specials menu again! For an appetizer, I tried the calamari. Not your traditional calamari, flash fried and then pan fried with a garlic/onion sauce. Super yummy. Today, I had the set lunch that included a soup of the day-creamy potato and bacon, an entree (pork cutlet served with curry sauce, rice and vegetables, and a drink (coffee, tea, soda). The soup was good. The curry was full of rich flavour. I would definitely recommend it and have it again when I go back. Give this unassuming restaurant a try! The food has been consistently delicious and a very good value. A gem on No. 6 road!!

Shoestring excels in every way imaginable. I've been here for pretty much every occasion you can imagine and not once have I received less than superior food and service. The staff work hard and systematically while engaging customers with smiles, kindness and great humour. The head chef in the kitchen, Ed, is always so busy overlooking everything from starters to entrees to desserts. All items that go out of the kitchen have his personal signature as he cooks them all himself. I don't know if he even takes days-off since I see him there every time I'm in, whether it's a weekend, a random Tuesday after work, or the many holidays I usually take the opportunity to celebrate at the one place I know will WOW without fail. Many times, the guests I've brought to Shoestring ask for an audience with the chef to give their regards in person. I guarantee, friends and family I've brought to Shoestring always come back for more on their own and are delighted to be the ones introducing the place to their guests in turn.

The wait was long. Long long. Like they waited until everyone else finished their food in the restaurant before serving us ours. The lobster butter that comes with the bread appetizer is good. The muscles are good. Not over cooked or over salted. The calamari was rubber and overly salty without being flavorful. At least the veggies they were on were fresh. The risotto is the best item I tried that night. Lots of lobster and great flavor. Although the lobster tail it's self was really salty. The aged rib steak was amazing and perfectly cooked to my liking and not over salted. Over all probably wouldn't go back. Salty doesn't equal flavourful. It's just salt. I'm hoping the speed at which dishes came out is due to a labour shortage.

Very modest location but the service and food were pretty delicious. Their calamari has a bit of an "asian" twist on it but it was cooked great and had great flavor. The Prime Rib was amazing and had potatoes done three ways. The horseradish and au jou really made the meat shine. Dessert did not blow us away but definitely fulfilled its purpose by curbing the sweet tooth craving. Looking at another review, the cheesecake is made in house, it was simple but tasty. While the only downside is that they have yet to get a liquor license (wine would have made the prime rib exceptional) I would definitely go back to try some other dishes. Also, couldn't beat the price of a "pick your own" full course meal for $39.

I was here last night and like some of the reviewers said it was loud, however it is the holidays and they were celebrating. I am going to base my review strictly on the food because thats what I came for. The food here is amazing. The black cod was melt in your mouth, you need to try this...it will seriously change your life! I had magical dreams about the chocolate souffle and I can't wait to go eat it again! If your patrons are having a good time obviously the chef knows what they are doing. Don't let the comments about the noise level discourage you from trying this place...the food is amazing!
