The food is absolutely to die for if you are craving some warm and homey English style food. Wide variety of beer on tap. Slow service and inattentive wait staff, if you are in a hurry go somewhere else, but if not the food is worth the wait. Very loud after 9pm.

Great food very happy , spent about 1.5 hours there , wait time was longer then normal times I guess me or my wife did not find the wait bad but because we waited they gave us both a free dessert . Very good service . Will come back .

The atmosphere and the food were excellent! But the service was AMAZING! My party of ten was very well looked after and we all enjoyed a variety of perfectly prepared meals. Two people ordered the special this evening which was the lamb shank and it was delicious! Highly recommend eating here and will definitely be back.

We had one of the best lunches ever here, with the Ace Club sandwich and the day's special, a BLT with local 5 Brothers cheese. The service was friendly and thoughtful. This was not my first visit and it was great each time. Definitely recommend.

Ordered wings at 12:05. Signalled waitress(es) after 30 min to come over so i could ask where my food was, and got ignored. Didn't get food until I walked to the kitchen at 12:50, and the wings were very cold and mushy. Was late heading back to work, and fully disappointed. Would not recommend.

Place is awesome! Our server Ashley was on top of her game even though it looked like she was basically alone running the bar and the dining room. The food is fantastic and I would definitely recommend the cottage pie and the chicken Yorky. This kitchen actually makes the food as opposed to most corporate pub fare where it's basically frozen and thrown into an oven, etc. Decor is spot on for an English pub.

This is a good eatery. The portions are large and the food is really good. Prices are reasonable. The server was fabulous and very attentive. We have eaten there several time while in Woodstock and will most certainly be back.

I wasn't too impressed with this place. I ordered a Cobb Salad. There were too many onions for my liking and the hard boiled egg was overcooked. When I mentioned the hard boiled egg to the waitress, she got a bit snippy saying "It's a hard boiled egg". Green yolk = overcooked. Anyway, my sister had a Steak and Kidney pie and she really liked it. I don't think I'll be back any time soon. I could get a better Cobb Salad at Montana's.

This pub is always very busy. With very good reason. The food is great. Lots of pub style favourites are on their menu, with specials as well. The roast beef special with Yorkshire pudding was delicious. They also have a terrific selection of beers on tap, and speciality drinks too. Service was good and timely.

A gem to be sure. Called in on the Charles Dickens on the way home from Kitchener. Shepard's pie was outstanding, the sticky toffee pudding best I've had this side of the Atlantic. Great ambiance. Well done you!

This is what I classify as a "just okay" pub. -1star for not having any Ontario craft beers on tap. -1 star for leaving me with a general sense of dissatisfaction. Foodwise reasonable for the price but nothing to write home about. Having said that, GF enjoyed her soup starter and chicken salad; salad had plenty of chicken. Wait staff very professional. I ordered the Roast Beef special it came out with two pieces of shoe leather. The waitress promptly rectify the situation upon being flagged down. In summary would not return.

I had wings and sweet potato fries. The wings were fairly standard, with a tasty sauce. The fries were excellent. Thick cut sweet potatoes, crispy outside and slightly soft inside, served with a spicy mayo. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. One of the waitresses had an extended conversation with an elderly gentleman who was clearly a well-known regular. A real pub.

Was in Woodstock on business and this restaurant was recommended by one of my customers. Firstly I love decor of the old style pub with it's wood finishing and carpeting. The service was fast and friendly and the food outstanding. Best fish and chips and shepherd's pie Also the portions were huge so a second meal will be enjoyed! Yum, Yum, Yum1

We go here once a week. Lots of selection on tap. Very good menu for all tastes. The French Onion Soup is to die for! The Yorkies are so good and we always have leftovers for lunch the next day. Very tasty burgers! They will even accommodate different sides if you like - I like to get the French Onion Soup as a side for my burger.

Great French Onion soup! I was very satisfied with my dinner here. For pub food it was above average for sure. Hats off to the cooks! The service besides is pretty standard. The beer is cold and therejis at least a place to sit outside if you are a cigarette smoker. Typically the interior is a standard United Kingdom style of pub, which most people find inviting and friendly.

Fantastic pub fare with excellent service! We stopped in for a family meal and we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals! We had the a fish sammi special , the fish and chips, a caesar salad and the Yorkshire bowl with roast beef! Highly recommend this pub for lunch, dinner or watching a game! Great local spot. PS we shared the fried mars bar for dessert and it disappeared in 4 bites!

The Dickens is our go-to pub of choice. Their entire menu is delicious, but their English fare is a highlight. We love to get their chicken curry on chips......the chef puts EXACTLY the right about of spice in it ! Such good comfort food. Great place to catch EPL soccer with other fans on weekend mornings. Super beer choices, as well. Be sure to go soon - you won't be disappointed.

I went here for my birthday last year and it was a real nice time! Food was great for all four of us, no complaints. I only give 4 stars because it was a smidge loud for my liking from the TVs and other patrons and our table was a little small for 4 people but that's totally a pub atmosphere. Love the decor! I was enjoying looking around at all the little details from Charles Dickens books in the art and decor, well done!

Not quite as good as I expected. Very nice pub atmosphere and great service. Food quality was the letdown. Fish and chips, a pub staple was just ok. One smallish piece of fish. Luke warm fries. This is not an inexpensive place to eat and I think on this occasion they could have done better.

Amazing. But I knew it was going to be good, at 1:15 the place was still really crowded from lunch rush. I had the cottage pie couldn't even finish it, there portions are extra large. It came with a garden side salad. Yum ! And I have enough for supper also. I swallowed it down with a superbly prepared ceasar from their bar. The customer service was great. I was dining alone but felt very taken care of thanks to Eric who was a fabulous waitress. I will be back.

Arguably the No.1 British pub in Southern Ontario. It's owned by Brits who have done a magnificent job of capturing the essence of a British pub from back home. If you find yourself with a bit of a wait to be seated... then wait, it will be worth it.

Went here for the first time tonight. The service was EXCELLENT. We were seated promptly, drinks not long after.... I got the chicken pie as per the waitress's recommendation, which was DELICIOUS, full of big chunks of good chicken breast and vegetables. My fiancee ordered the fish and chips, thinking he would just have to pass on the two for one Monday special since I wasn't getting any, but the waitress immediately offered to pack up the second order, and suggested deep fry and french fries don't keep so well so would you like the lemon baked fish and mashed potatoes instead for the packed order. The food was all excellent, our waitress checked in on us multiple times, and the price was quite reasonable for the quality we got. The cherry on the cake was when we left the restaurant, another waitress ran out into the snow after us in a tshirt to give us that second fish and chips order which we'd accidentally left at the bar. Overall fantastic. We'll be back for sure!

Visited here after a gruelling adventurous day of geocaching in the area. Charles Dickens Pub has an authentic British Pub feel with a great selection of Lagers, Ales and Stout on tap. I ordered the roast beef yorky and was surprised when it arrived. The dinner was massive and it was outstanding. My wife had the giant meatball and that was out of this world. I would definitely visit here again.

The order too an extra half hour more than the time they gave us to come pick up our order. We got it home and found out that the fries were burnt and there was barely any gravy on the poutine, which was supposed to replace the fries in our order. I know usually it may be great to get extra food delivered to you but when they are burnt, who wants them? Then it's just more food to throw out. I hate wasting food with so many people starving out there. They probably would have eaten the fries burnt or not. The fish wasn't bad but the outer crust was great on top and all wet and mushy on the bottom. That was 2 orders of fish & chips and 1 extra piece of fish. It cost me $80.00! I was flabbergasted. When I got home and saw what I'd paid all that money for, I was disgusted. Not a meal that would make me want to return for more.

This place is the best pub I’ve been to in ages. Many places claim to be pubs but miss the mark. From the moment you walk in there’s a warmth and comfort of old. Combine this with proper cooked traditional English grub, friendly wait staff and a great selection of beer on tap. We live in london, and try to pop in as often as we can. Even walking in with great expectations, they never fail to impress and exceed. Well done Charles Dickens pub!

I used to only go there for breakfast but last week I was there for a late meal with. a friend and we both loved it. The food was great and the staff did their best to get us a table because the place was full and lots of people waiting. My advice would be to make a reservation. You will not be disappointed.

Very busy place because the food was so good, the place is kind of small for thee amount of people that were in there, waiters/waitress were super friendly, one of our meals was not made at the same time as the others so that was unfortunate but the place was so busy and we were a party of 10, so it happens, it was good it still managed to come out while the rest of us ate. there was a line at the door the whole time so make sure you make a reservation if you don't have time to wait.

First dining out experience with my husband tonight. We chose Dickens, hoping it wouldn't be too busy. Staff was welcoming, and wearing a mask to protect others as we were taken to our table, wasn't inconvients at all. Service was great, and our dinner was delicious. Have you had their Fish & Chips? I've never been compelled to write a review until now. We often have to be in Woodstock on Wed eve's and felt like wings. Just on a whim googled "woodstock wing night" and Charles Dickens came up. Best Google search return ever. The French Onion soup I had as a starter was best I've had, wings also in the top 3 at min too. Wife had the BBC burger and potatoe skins which also were excellent. On a side note the wife said the bar made the best long island iced teas she's had. Big thanks to our server Monica! The place was so busy and they work there butts off. Would recommend to anyone and look forward to retuening. Jamie / Tanya.

Food was absolutely delicious. The only place in Canada that makes shepherd's pie with lamb just as it's supposed to be. Their menu has a large selection of great food. Love supporting local restaurants during the pandemic, even if it's only take-out/curbside. That said, a secondary or tertiary phone line would be a major asset... or even the option to order online? I've been trying to place an order for #takeoutday because there's no restaurant I'd rather give my business to, but I've been calling since 4:45pm and it's now 6:05pm and I'm finishing work...have gotten the busy signal probably 15-20 times now? I live an hour out of town, so the window for me to have gotten an order in with a reasonable pick-up time is quickly closing. Update: my food was ready within 20 minutes and tasted as good as always :)

Only there for a non-alcoholic beverage, so unable to comment on the food but did notice what appeared to be a very clean kitchen! Washrooms are located on the second floor and I'm sure it could be a difficult commute after several or one too many drinks - lol. The washrooms were clean as well. Selling packaging and consumables for 20+ years and owning 2 bars that sold food for 15 I would give 5 stars for cleanliness! Would definitely go back - cheers!

We bought, and ate the halibut fish and chips plate at $25.99 with 2 nice pieces of fish, and the Yorkie with roast beef plate... everything, veg, gravy, fries, mashed was so freaking hot and fresh. During Covid, if you're complaining about soggy food because of delivery... Dine in your damn car around the corner and pick it up! We've dined in before at the Charles D same qualityon the mains. The only negative I have is on me as I forgot to and should have asked for the yorkshire pudding on the side.... its too soggy as bottom layer under mashed etc... order it on the side to appreciate size, and flavour.

CHIP HOUSE CURRY SAUCE !!! I've been going here for years for their great deal Mondays for fish and chips, however, it wasn't until a recent visit during Covid where they had reprinted their menus that I noticed you can get a side of curry sauce for your fries and it's so damn good ! Wish it wasn't a secret before because it's a game changer ! Some of the best fish and chips in town too !

Made reservations for 4pm.(there was MAYBE 3 tables occupied) We showed up at 4 on the dot and stood at the doors for a solid 10 mins before we just sat ourselves. About 10 mins after we sat someone finally came over to get a drink order. I ordered a $20 salad that came out with soft rotten lettuce and no dressing. My mom also had a salad and hers had dried up chicken and no dressing. My 2 kids ordered the $9 chicken kids meal. It came with 2 very small strips of chicken and a handful of fries The only thing that was good was my fathers poutine. Would not recommend..

First visit here on my husbands and my date night! I am pleased to say this will be the first of many visits! Emily was our waitress and was awesome! Very friendly and informative. Excellent service indeed! My husband had the bangers and mash, I had the steak.... We were both very happy with our meals. Great brews, exceptional food and absolutely fantastic service! We called ahead and was told to come by and that some tables should be opening up. When we arrived we put our name on a list to be called when a table would ready - about 20 mins. So we sat in the car for over half an hour. Called again and was told it would still be another 20-30 mins. We sat for another 60 minutes before giving up. In the end we never even received a call. They just let us sit indefinitely. Poor service to say the least.

I was on vacation for 1 week in the region and came twice to this restaurant. IT was that good. First time, I had the Fish and Chips. Everytime I go to a pub, this is what I get. And these were the best one I've ever had. It was extremely fresh. Second time, I had a Reuben sandwhich. Also really good.

It used to be better, that's why the 4 stars instead of 5, maybe it's just them getting back into it after lockdowns but I was disappointed the last time I went. Tiny expensive drinks, charged me and brought me out 2 sets of fries, lack of communication from server. Probably won't be back for a long time

Really nice "local" pub on the main street in Woodstock., Had a great lunch meal for a reasonable price. There was a really good beer selection, as any pub should have with a good mix of local, mass market and import beers available. Apparently there is live music some nights, but we were there mid day. Easily accessible with parking out front and nearby. I could easily spend many nights here with friends.

We were visiting from Calgary and my cousin took us here for supper the night before we left. I so wish we had known about this gem at the beginning of our trip! I had hmmm I cant even remember my main cuz my dessert blew me away!! Lol But everyone else had a beef dip and said it was amazing! The coconut shrimp were excellent and I do know that my meal also was very tasty! BUT the Sticky Toffee Pudding was to die for! I so wish I could have that every week! Lol hats off to the chefs there! Our next visit to Ontario we will definitely be in more than once!

My lady and I wanted to check it out. Sat down and waited and waited. One couple eating their food , another group about to leave and one customer sitting at the bar chatting with the staff. They looked at us but nobody even approached with a menu or to ask if we wanted a drink. After several minutes we got up and left. Is this any way to run a business

What a good time! Its not all about the food all the time, its about enjoying yourself and the people around you. That is what we do, enjoy ourselves what ever we do and where ever we go. It really wasn't hard to enjoy yourself here, it was busy and very lively, a lot of nice people also having a great time. It was Friday night and it was busy but we grabbed a drink at the bar and had a seat in a couple of minutes, The staff were very friendly and as busy as they were in a full restaurant they did very well. They have a great selection of beers on tap and a nice selection of appetizers. We ordered the spinach and artichoke dip, wow that was good. The menu is great, don't see that selection anywhere else. Its not just burgers and wings, they even have perogies ! I wanted some comfort food, roast beef mashed potatoes and gravy and even was hoping to find Yorkshire pudding. We had the meatloaf, the cottage pie which was similar to shepherds pie but so much better and then the mashed, roast beef in a Yorkshire pudding bowl with onions and mushrooms, oh geez everything was so good. Then we had the desert, the lemon meringue pie cheesecake. One of the best cheesecakes you will ever have! We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and will be back for sure. Go, enjoy, take someone you love to be with and have a great time because the food is great and I hope you have great company to share this with. Bon appetite!

He treated me to lunch and it was by far the best pub food I have ever found in Woodstock. I am a local and I've been to quite a few of the local restaurants. Simply amazing! Highly recommend to dine in, if possible. The environment was spectacular. So many things to look at!

Grew up coming here lots with my parents, so I knew what the pub was like. Threw and threw.. disappointed:( (Times are accurate to within a few min) Waited 10min to get drinks taken. Waited another 13min to get them brought to the table, 5min later the order was taken. 25min later the SOME of the food was brought to the table.. ordered 3lbs of wings, df pickles, a salad and a bruchetta bread. 2 of the wings were wrong.. dealt with the 1. Asked for 2 new drinks, waited over 12min for them. Almost another 25min since the order was told it was wrong, and the wings remade. 45min after we got sat and ordered the bruschetta and hg 1lb of wings showed up.. The server told another table she was "3 days new".

We are Woodstock locals and as far as non franchise restaurants go, the Dickens is undoubtedly the best! The quality of service is bar none, 90% of the time our pitcher of Rolling Rock is already on it's way over before we even open our menus. The Dickens is a true English pub with Guinness on tap (among many other different kinds of beer), menu items such as liver and onions, bangers and mash, and of course a selection of battered fish and chips (the halibut is pheomenal). That being said, their menu also contains classic American pub fare such as chicken wings, potato skins and homemade burgers. All of the food we have had has been delicious! The atmosphere is always friendly and relaxed with regulars and patrons just having a good time. At the end of the day, the Dickens is our #1 choice when it comes to unwinding at the end of a long week while enjoying a cold beer, awesome food and great service.

I was in once a few months ago and had the most phenomenal server. He was behind the bar, but I saw him out on the floor, helping the servers and I was blown away. It was a Friday night, he was busy, and yet had the time to help the servers slammed on the floor? I’ve been in the industry a long time and he was IMPRESSIVE. I came back a few weeks later and I overheard staff talking about this guy. Apparently he’d been fired and from what I overheard, it was because he had somehow offended someone? Anyway, he was great, I came back for him, and brought my family. The service sucked when I came back and so I can only conclude that they have no idea what constitutes a great member of the staff. I won’t ever go back there.

Waitress forgot my drink. My meal was very bland. (Not her fault)When she brought the meal to us she just plopped it down and ran, not asking if she could get us anything else. This place is excellent. I normally stop here for lunch when traveling between the GTA and Windsor / Chatham. It's a bit off the highway but easy enough to get to and back to the highway without losing much time. Plenty of free street parking around too. Service is always fast and friendly. They have a good selection of taps too. Their fish and chips are excellent. Their pies are delicious and filling. Their wings are tasty too. They probably don't have a bad item on the menu. Would definitely recommend this place if passing through Woodstock.
