Right now this firm gets a score of 4.7 stars over 5 and this score is based on 127 reviews.
As you can read, it has an average rating is virtually the top, and it is based on a high number of feddbacks, so we may think that the assessment is quite accurate. If there are many people who bothered to give their review when they've done well, it works.
As you know, we don't usually bother to write feddbacks when they are good and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or issue...
This Restaurant is classified in the category of Restaurant.
Fantasically weird food, please give this place a try! Also very friendly staff
one of the few places in town deserving of 5 stars. Amazing food, awesome “hole in the wall” atmosphere with passionate and knowledgeable employees. Staff we’re excited about the food, and we’re quick to acknowledge and correct errors. (Miscommunication with order and some errors on the nights menu) *most of the menus online for Hanks show the old BBQ menu from years ago, food is far more elevated.
Hank's is always a go-to restaurant for me. From the staff, to the drink to the food, the experience is always above par. Thank you to everyone for the consistency of a great experience.
Didn't live up to expectations, many of our friends have had killer meals here and we will be trying again in a few weeks when the menu changes. The steak was beautifully cooked but let down by the potato side which seemed to be missing any seasoning. When combined with the spiced sauce it helped the overall flavour but more care should be given to the sides to complement the main. Wife had a burger, meat again was perfect but a lack of flavour left us feeling like it was a meal easily duplicated at home on the grill. overall it's a great place to try often and very different from the typical restaurant offerings in Victoria. call ahead because seating is minimal and fills very quickly.
I've shied away from giving 5 star reviews, but this restaurant deserves it. It's very small, with limit seating but cranks out some amazing and imaginative food. The menu is seasonal, changes often and offers a little of everything. We split 6 dishes with a few drinks and I can honestly say, I was pleasantly surprised by what was served. Some great flavour combinations that I've never really had before, the spicy beets salad being my favourite. Out of all the dishes, only the squid didn't quite fit the rest of the menu and was a little too salty due to the fish sauce, but it's a minor point. Loved it here... absolutely loved this place!
If you want a treat, I cannot recommend the "chef's best" tasting option enough. These dishes change as the menu changes and are up to the creativity of the chefs. Each dish was brought out by the person who made it, so if you like talking food or asking questions, this is also a real treat! I enjoyed the whole experience and would go back again (and again...).
Awesome BBQ. In a town with very few BBQ options, Hank's is an oasis. Everything is done in house, and it shows. Fantastic food. My only complaint is that the shop is very small. It can means waits, and also there is considerable noise from the open kitchen. Small price to pay for rad BBQ though.
Omg try it for yourself! You will not regret it!
Astonishingly good. If you can manage to find a seat at Hank's, you owe it to yourself to give them a chance. Andrew, one of the owners, treated us like family and made us feel welcome even half an hour before we managed to grab a table. The guys are culinary masters who deserve to be recognized for their craft. I can't begin to offer any criticism on what I was served or the experience we had - they were far beyond any meal I've had in recent memory. If this restaurant deserves five stars, then nothing I have ever experienced lives up to it.
This was our first time at Hank’s having visited it’s sister restaurant behind the restaurant several weeks back. The difference between the restaurants is that Hank’s serves mainly meat dishes whereas Nowhere serves mainly seafood dishes. Also Nowhere I’m told has a little more extensive wine list. Supper at Hank’s was amazing and the service is probably the best that I have ever had in Victoria. Chef Clark is in charge of the menus in both restaurants and clearly is passionate about what he cooks. We are always worried about ordering gnocchi as my dining companion has eaten extensively in Italy. We asked Clark whether we should and he said he was very confident. The gnocchi dish served with crab and corn was unbelievable. We also had the bear tooth mushrooms served with farinata. It too was unbelievable. Oh, and because we loved the housemade butter we had at Nowhere and they were out, Clark whipped up a batch of butter while we waited! Clearly this place is passionate about its food and that comes through in every dish they prepare. You don’t want to miss this place!
Awesome! A small, trendy eatery/restaurant with excellent food. Get the Tasting Menu - a great variety of dishes, each complex and perfect and interesting. Great date night spot - food is a good conversation point. $100 for tasting menu was good value.
Everything that passed my lips was amazing! I even ate seafood and liked it which is amazing for me! I'll totally try to get in here again.
Great food, great service. A little smoky in the small space but overall had a lovely experience.
Passionate chefs serving up amazing and different food everytime.
Not sure if there’s a change in management or a shift in focus to their sister restaurant, but really disappointed overall in experience (service, food). Small and loud is cool, but time to get a phone and dedicated service staff. Long waits. Food came out randomly. Impossible to order a second drink.
Food was great with a variety of dishes that highlighted local producers.
If you've never been here, come here! One of my 2 favourite restaurants in Victoria!
Tiny place with an interesting menu, very tasty food and good deserts.
If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Hands down, one of the best meals I've ever eaten. The food quality, presentation, and style are absolutely mind-blowing. The service is fantastic and the atmosphere is cozy and fun. I couldn't recommend it enough. It is not often that I am completely blown away when trying a restaurant for the first time, but this place really exceeded my expectations in every way. I will definitely be coming back.
I fail to describe how amazing the food is at this place! The atmosphere is cozy, the portions are good and you can see that the staff really enjoy themselves. If you have been to Victoria and have not eaten here, you have truly missed out!
There aren't enough stars available; if I could give more than 5 stars I would. This is the restaurant of my dreams. We shared laughs with the cooks as we ate one of the best meals of our lives. The cured meats were all interesting and unique; for example, one was local wild leek pesto on a pate-smeared pork skin (!!). With our minds blown by this first dish, we found even more delights in a pork belly and corn cake over pineapple and tomato salsa. The beers on tap were delicious. The staff are fun and knowledgeable. A million stars out of five.
First time here, we don't get treats like this in Ottawa! Bravo guy's!
Delicious beef patty on a bun baked in the restaurant from scratch. I thought the lack of a side would've been a negative, but by the time I worked through the 2/3 of a pound of meat and cheese, I couldn't have fit a single French fry in, anyway! I also love that the guy whose name was on the door came by to make his recommendations personally before going off to make the burgers himself. I'll be back!
The food is just outstanding - no two ways about it. Delicious meats prepared in so many ways. You need to bring your appetite.
The food was delicious and creative. Unfortunately, it was also a bit too heavily salted.
Every time I come here, their food is Amazing! The menu is always changing because they highlight local foods, and there has never been anything I've eaten that I wouldn't want again!
Tasty, but take their advice and get a knife and fork if you take a takeout sandwich. It was so wet, given all the sauce, that I was one gooey mess while eating it. I would give them a 4 star or higher if they considered very hard, crusty bread to soak up all the moisture.
Food is outstanding! Wife loved the wine slurpy?
Great food, friendly service, fun menu. Hank's is passionate about food, and it shows. Highly recommend.
First time @ Hanks ~ and WOW was it Delicious ! My husband had the Boar Burger ~ Tasty and Fragrant , he mentioned ' the bun ', the bun, several times in mid mouthful ...I didn't try it myself, but oh yeah his burger smelled Terrific ! He topped this off with a dark IPA, which he enjoyed. For myself, I had the Baby Back Ribs with an Apple Puree of sorts , Potato Salad and Red Cabbage Carrot Slaw ~ Well, every mouthful was Perfection ~ I could not stop myself ' moaning and ooohhhhing ' ~ which let's face it can be a tad embarrassing in such a small setting ~ Just ask the "Sleepless in Seattle crew" ...ha ! I also enjoyed an apple cider, which was Crisp and Refreshing ! Included with our meal was Hazelnut Bread , made with LUV earlier that day. It was so great we ordered 2 extra pieces to take home ~ Similar to corn bread, but lighter and softer in texture with a delightful Hazelnut taste. Also we took a Pulled Pork Meal home for our son, It was a Large Hit on the Taste - o - Rama scale ! So I, we, really had a great time ! The FOOD is Mouthwatering, Fresh, Local, Interesting, and made with LOVE and a Great Attitude ~ Really now Victoria, what more could you ask for...?We'd definitely recommend this wee spot on Douglas near the Bay downtown ~ It's a Tiny Treasure, so you might have to wait a bit to sit down, however >>> It's worth it !! <<< It's UNTRADITIONAL LOVE ~
Delicious! Very friendly! Go as you are!
Probably the best in Victoria. Amazing food
Great food with great music and atmosphere ????
Amazing food and service. There is a reason it is 5 stars! Can't wait to go back again. Third time I have been here now and it is amazing! The details they put into the dishes is brilliant. Tonight was jalapeno Salmon with dumplings. Perfect mix!! Can't wait to come again!
This place encourages you to trust the chefs. The menu is constantly changing and with the creativity that goes on in the kitchen the menu is only a guideline anyway. I would be willing to crown this place as the best restaurant in Victoria.
Absolutely love this place, super kind staff. My go to place for a little splurge meal. *a lottle splurge meal
My husband asked if I could give it 10 out of 5 stars! ✨ Ultra Gourmet food in a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. The locals are talking to each other and the staff like friends. Felt like a little community. Food was amazing. Very thoughtful. Top quality ingredients, fresh ground spices. They love to make this food and it shows. Menu changes regularly. Each dish is served with an explanation of the ingredients, where they came from, and how it was prepared. We will definitely be back regularly to have the sampler. (today's best things) Not cheap but worth every dime. ????
Never been disappointed here. Order from the main items on display as those will likely be excellent.
Unapologetically awesome. Big flavors, without compromise
I was excited to try this place. After selecting the set menu, the food started to pour out of the kitchen. I was happy with the rate at which they served. What through me off about this restaurant was how dirty it was. Many of the serving plates were dirty with bits of staining previous servings. The glassware was cloudy. We sat at the bar and watched the server collect our plates, serve other plates and move onto making cocktails - the ice cubes came out of freezer plates (like you use in a home), and he was taking them out of their settings with his bare hands. I find this really unsanitary. The whole place could use a very deep clean. I didn't like that the set menu used the same beef for two of their dishes. A raw appetizer and cooked entree - it was a lot of beef. Overall, the food was okay. The chef was capable, but the environment and serving practices were unsanitary.
Definitely one of the best meals ive ever had. And amazing creative drinks. All around amazing. Only downside for me (being a hungry man with a ferocious appetite) is that serving sizes are more...responsible. But even then it was very filling. Will certainly be coming back next time we are in town
WOW is an understatement. Food made with love, quality, and local ingredients. Can’t get enough!
This is my first time ever doing a tasting menu and it was an enjoyable experience. The staff member serving us gave us a detailed breakdown on each dish. The food was all local and the menu was only available for a limited time. The cocktails were crazy good in a different unique way. The restaurant is small with only a few seats but a very relaxed and casual atmosphere. Definitely make a reso if you want to come here for dinner and fully consider getting the tasting menu and drink menu. It was expensive but by the end of the meal we were both stuffed and there was plenty of food. The quality was top notch and the experience was unique.
The place is small and cozy. Staff is very friendly, I world day exceptionally friendly. The menu is very peculiar in a good way, you can find there something you have never eaten before.
The best restaurant in Victoria. And they will never admit it.
For once, a restaurant that lives up to the hype. The food was AMAZING, atmosphere was fun, and the guys were awesome. I could not have asked for a better dinner to end our trip. If there's only one place you go, go here.
Blown away by the food. Owner is passionate and knowledgeable.
Cozy and home-like. This place is a gem, highly recommend.
I genuinely think this is the best restaurant I've ever been to... Globally.
The other reviews are accurate - this place is probably Victoria’s best restaurant. Update - back 3 years after original review - had the “best things” tasting menu and it was awesome.
Such a great little spot. The menu changes constantly but it's all really good. Adventurous, meat forward dishes that are sure to please. Sit at the bar and strike up a conversation with the super laid back but incredibly knowledgeable staff.
Possibly the best restaurant in Victoria. Limited seating, no reservations, but worth an inconvenience.
I almost don't want to rate it because I don't want to give away the secret... but omg this place is 10/10 in every way. Some of the best food I have ever had, and service is amazing. I'll be back again and again.
Their pastrami sandwich and their brand are amazing. Very friendly owner/chef. Good beer choices
Hanks is one of those places that really gets it. These guys are a constant incubation of fantastic food, through awesome and sometimes unusual pairings. With the Hip forever present, they specialize (in my opinion) in dry aged beef dishes, but always have a special pork belly, carne crudo, duck, venison, or some other delicious game on the menu. Clark and Andrew have mastered beer pairings, and also delight with a wonderful wine menu. Desert wines and scotchs also make the list. The whole staff is incredibly friendly, and it shows that their interest is tasty food in the presentation and follow-up. If you truly want something creative and excellent, this is your place. Can't find it anywhere else but Hanks.
Without a doubt *the* best meal I’ve ever had in a restaurant. Period. A foodie friend from Montreal was visiting and had been wanting to eat at Hank’s for a few years. Let me just say that we were both blown away. We each ordered the $65 tasting menu and this is absolutely the way to eat at Hank’s. i’ve included a photo of the menu that night indicating which courses we were served and in what order. I would have really regretted just ordering a single dish had I gone that route! The seven courses come from the dishes on the current menu. The chef will tell you a couple of the things that he will serve you but likes to keep some of it a secret. He was very accommodating when we asked if one particular dish could be included in the tasting menu (the rabbit ravioli, and it was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever eaten). There were a number of things I had never eaten before and I wasn’t sure I “liked” but I decided to be adventurous and it REALLY paid off. Everything was absolutely perfect. The chef personally delivered every course, explained it, and answered any questions we had about it. Do yourself a huge favour and eat at Hank’s—you deserve it!
Absolutely phenomenal food can be found right here. My girlfriend and I had the tasting menu ($65/pp) and were beyond satisfied. There was an optional drink pairing but we opted against it. The service from was personal and warm despite only having two employees who prep, cook, serve, and clean themselves. From in-house cured duck and lamb haggis, to gnocchi with Lion’s Mane mushrooms and halibut cheek, everything was farm to table, freshly caught that day, or made in-house. Come with an appetite, or just order a la carte and you won’t be disappointed!
Incredible dinner at Hank's! I can't say enough about the food, staff, and overall experience here. We made reservations and settled on the tasting menu. Highly recommended. Course after course exceeded expectations, and we left with our bellies happy and full. This is a fun, quirky place with a small kitchen, and an awesome team behind the counter. They're happy to walk you through the menu and detail each dish they serve. We were only in Victoria for a day, and I'm certain we'd return here the very first night on our next trip to the city. A+
a culinary delight in a tiny kitchen. fantastic and friendly staff, even better food.
One of the best steaks I have ever had.....they cooked it to perfection....as they don't cook it by rare, med, etc. just to the right temperature. The vegetables we amazing and the non potato potatoes we so good. Thanks guys and lady.
Funky little kitchen. Knowledgeable and passionate chef/server. I had the venison mushroom gnocchi which was fabulous. Limited seating. Meat-heavy. I will be back!
Absolutely the most incredible food and the best staff I've ever had
EPIC BBQ! Amazing ingredients, top quality meats, great - & original- spice combinations. I had a religious experience eating the brisket sandwich today - yes, it's THAT good!!!
Inspired micro restaurant. Try the cocktails!
Great and rotating selection of food and drink, plus good people running it. Nice big plates, in a nice small venue.
Hanks is back to basics and by basics I mean awesome food for lunch or dinner. Order ahead, order in person or do the delivery thing. Best damn sandwiches to sustain you while the world is acting all crazy.
Very small restaurant with only a few tables and seats at the bar. We were unsure of the place when we walked in but stuck with it as it was recommended by a local. The portion sizes are small but they do fill you up. The pairing on the menu are very well done and every bit was worth it. You can tell they take a lot of pride in their food and treat every customer like family. The staff made a mistake with one of our meals so they comp'd one of our drinks which was very appreciated and unexpected. Definitely will be coming back next time we are in Victoria. One of the best customer services I have had.
Too salty. Burgers were inedible.
Only place where you can sit at the bar, have amazing food, cocktails while bros in muscle shirts chat with a dude in a skate helmet he doesn’t take off while a sweet couple next to me are obviously on a first date. In other words ...... awesome!! ???? ..... uuuh and they serve Foie Gras on toast
Great local place. Food is fresh and prepared on front of you. Cocktails are good to.
My favorite place in Victoria, hands down. Food is absolutely amazing, plus super-friendly atmosphere too!
Food is best in town! Cozy place and staff are amazing.
Great staff and cool menu. Not your usual Earls fare, more creative.
Because wagyu. That's enough reason right? Because home made nearly everything. Because meat. Because foodgasms.
WOW!!! Tasting Menu, shared for 2, filling and crazy value for the quality of dishes. Will be back soon.
Between them and Nowhere they’re simply phenomenal. Either place can go toe to toe w any of the great fine dining establishments in the country. I bring friends here when I want to show off an island gem. Also very reasonably priced.
Unreal how good the food is. Creative menu with friendly staff. Small place packs a big punch
I had a friend take me there and we ordered from the top of the menu down to about midway where we began to fill up. Learned after that second half and top change regularly which excites me ever more to do it again. Happy to have been able to meet everyone there, the team at Hanks will literally make your day. Hoping to go back soon ie. tonight! If you are looking for an amazing atmosphere, amazing food! You are going to the right place!
I enjoyed the food and they had interesting combinations.
Dee-lish. Super chill and great ambience. Mussels and caramel apple pie for desert, and the staff were super attentive and helpful. Well done!!!
The rack of lamb wad hands down the best lamb I've ever had. These guys are passionate about what they do, their meats and ingredients are super fresh, and their drinks are delicious as well.
Too cool for school. Love thew variety!
I was in a rush to catch a bus but my belly had other ideas in mind. I walked by this place and the aroma coming out the door was irresistible! They made me a delicious sandwich very quickly and I was out the door in time to get my bus. Super friendly staff, great atmosphere and most importantly, delicious food! I'll be back for sure
Wanted to see what all the fuss was about and Hanks lived up to the hype. I had the beef brisket, potatoes and corn which was damn good. Too bad the restaurant is so small and hard to get a seat at!
I have no words... except for amazing, delicious, fun, friendly, and exceptional!
Our favourite meal in Victoria. The tasting menu was spectacular. Amazing service, ambiance, beer list, and food. The crab gnocchi dish blew us away. All local ingredients, unique dishes.. can't say enough positive things about our meal.
Best restaurant in Victoria, bar none.
Tiny place, big flavour! Loved the atmosphere and then the food came, plate after plate of delicious creations. Thanks to Rylan for brilliantly whipping up some of Victoria’s best food. Will be back with friends. We were well taken care of and left satisfied.
Delicious! All foods have a perfect mix the taste is so amazing! I can't wait to come here again with my family and friends.
Went in for dinner last night and had the best time. Staff is warm, attentive, and hilarious; could really tell they were passionate and enthusiastic about what they were doing. Food was insanely delicious, split the tasting menu and sat at the bar so we could interact with everyone in the open kitchen. Super fun, highly recommend.
the pig tails and pork hocks are the best I've had anywhere in the world.
Excellent brisket und the Best smoked chicken sandwich I ever had
Delicious food, great beer selection, and knowledgeable staff. The menu changes regularly with eclectic local selections. I had no idea what I wanted but the server walked me through all the selections and helped guide me in the right direction, and I was not disappointed. It was cozy with only two tables and a bar but the local feel gave this place a charm that made me I'm glad I'd stumbled upon it.
This is a really cool restaurant to meet up with some carnivore buddies. Their website really says it well: "We are a small place and we serve an ever-rotating selection of great food, bbq, local beers and wine. Our menu changes pretty regularly so it’s best to pop in… We are first-come first-serve (no reservations), cozy and loud." It's right in the downtown business district so it's a good spot to meet up for a fun lunch or go for a burger and beer with one or two friends after work. When I was here for lunch the wait staff were great about making recommendations and didn't mind throwing a slathering of blue cheese butter onto a sandwich I ordered that didn't already come with it.
Always a great time at Hanks! The food always on point and the drinks spectacular. Stellar house made ginger beer!
Great service, very cosy atmosphere and truly amazing food.
Really cool, small, place with great food and staff
great food,interesting decoration. Love it
Such a fun place and absolutely delicious food.....highly recommend!
This review is specifically for the "Today's Best Things $65" menu option. Went for dinner here with 2 other people - so 3 total. We ended up asking for the chef's choice tasting menu. We were surprised to be served portions for 2 people, but had to pay for 3 meals. We were told it was going to be served family style. A couple (2 people) also opt-ed for the tasting menu and were easily given more food than us. If the dishes were the same, the portions were also the same - but they were eating for 2 and we were feeding 3 people. For example, we got 5 pieces of shrimp, for one of the dishes, to share between 3 people. We were not impressed with the portions. When we asked the manager/chef about it, they said, well the other couple didn't even get the shrimp dish. Needless to say, it was an awkward dining experience after our query. It's a shame, because the food was tasty, but in terms of price for this particular experience and the overall experience with the staff, it was not worth the cost of the $65 meal. I do hope that our experience is improved upon for future guests. We likely won't go back.
Love the changing menu and almost everything they serve. Expectations are pretty high when you get so many wow moments with the food. Great selection of unique craft beer.
Excellent! The menu has a lot of fancy words but the food is simple uncomplicated and absolutely delicious. Very friendly staff too. It's a small space but even though it was full when we got there (a group of four of us), they made space for us quickly. It's a bit pricier than I'm used to paying but the food was worth it.
If you eat here you will not want to eat anywhere else ever again. Surreal food always a new menu so every visit is a new experience. I try and take anyone who visits Victoria to this place. Can't reccomend it enough. If you haven't eaten here stop what you're doing and go.. now! Why are you still reading this review!! Go now!!!!
It's weird, it's delicious, it makes no apologies. A constantly changing menu of local things, hand made, by people who care about quality.
Love coming to Hanks this is a place you have to try in Victoria great food great service.
The halibut cheeks were very good! thanks!
Only been a few times, but has always been amazing! Staff are great, and the food is always mind-blowing; the owner is hilarious too! Always feel appreciated here, and will definitely come back; I highly recommend eating here if you have the time! If you haven’t seen from other reviews, seating is a bit limited, but worth the wait if you have to :)
The food is amazing. It will blow all your expectations put of the water and make you want to come back for every item on the menu... good luck choosing!
Amazing! They change their menu every 2 months, every single dish is spectacular. Can’t say enough how great the chefs are. My go to Western Restaurant in Victoria.
Came here for the first time with friends for dinner. Place is small so we made a reservation to ensure we would get in. Cocktails were great. I had an eggnog one and a beer. Tried the burger for dinner and it was delicious. A friend got the duck and it was fantastic as well. Will be back at some point. Service was exceptional as well.
If you love meat, this is the place to go. Amazing food, menu changes often, and they take requests. Small little place, so don't plan on bringing a large group and expecting enough seats.
Outstanding food. Wonderful service. Great vibe.
Amazing place! Food was simply spectacular; great, friendly service. One of the highlights of our Victoria trip. Highly recommended.
I just heard about this place tonight. I was walking up town to do some banking and some street musicians suggested I check the place out. Only seats 18. Does not take reservations. But I hear that the FOOD is AMAZING and the menu changes all the time. The three people I spoke to suggested I make it a priority to try it out. Next time I am going on a date - this is where I want to go!
Excellent personable service by all the staff working there. They take time to chat if you're seated up at the bar overlooking the small open kitchen. Everything's made with love and you can really taste it The aesthetic and overall atmosphere are most improved since the renovation.
Delicious quality food. If you like meat, this is a place for you!
Fabulous food. Always worth the time and money. Great quality, and great creativity!
This place is very much worth your time and money. The staff work really hard and create inventive and delicious dishes. The atmosphere is very welcoming and personal. Would go back anytime
I simply adore this place. Rotating menu, insanely fresh and tasty local ingredients. Small but mighty. Get there early. This duck pasta was succulent, packed a flavour punch, and is my current favourite thing. The Rock Cod is a piece of art. Go, and go quickly. You won't regret it.
Great service, great wine list by the glass, cozy atmosphere (18 seats mainly at the bar), and super fantastic unique menu. Very tasty. Highly recommended.
Super friendly staff. Fantastic beer selection. Best burger I've ever had in my life. From a first time patron, I am looking forward to my second time immensely.
Wow, these guys just invite you to their kitchen. Great attention and very tasty too
Absolutely excellent food, I was very impressed. Everything was absolutely delicious with a very unique and diverse menu. If you are a foodie, it is an absolute delight! Ordered a burger that was aged 150 days and duck breast that was worth feeding to the kings. The menu is seasonal and ever-changing. Absolutely fantastic!
We loved the music, the atmosphere and the menu. So many interesting things to try out. Had the tasters menu for two and we were very happy with all that was served. Keep up the good work!
These lads know food. Fun, inventive, and deliscious. Best breakfast in Victoria. Pastrami insanely good. Bring your appetite.
I had the set menu and I shall never forget it. Quality, creativity, style. Farm to table done right. Each dish a delightful surprise. So good.
Some of the best food in Victoria. Healthy, organic free range meats and the highest quality local produce and food products. They use Two Rivers meats which are the best. Fantastic recipes that change all the time. Check out their Facebook for the daily menu. Great staff.
I'm blown away by these guys and their incredible food and creative menus. I just arrived back in Vic after 2 years and they brought up the quality of their food even further than I could imagine. Bravo guys. If I could give you ten stars I would.
Had the Beef Bavette (similar to a brisket) in Coffee BBQ sauce with pan fried grits, slaw and black beans. Everything was very good, but the sides were huge while the actual BBQ was kind sparse. The grits aren't plain grits, and they go great with the meat. The slaw is red and not too sweet. Black beans aren't my favorite, I didn't see baked beans on the menu (part of the 'untraditional' thing?). Still, they were pretty good and had a little bite to them. The place is cozy, I didn't see much room for large groups.
My boyfriend asked for a surprise drink and the gentleman made this awesome mix of two drinks from the menu,
Remember "The Emperor's New Clothes," the story about how this ooh-la-la person was like "only COOL people can see these garments" and everyone was willing to pretend to see them so they wouldn't be exposed as UNcool? That's this restaurant. They take expensive local ingredients and cook them poorly, and nobody wants to admit they don't like it because it's so aggressively hip ("our food isn't for everyone," claims their website, letting you know that if you don't like it you could always go to Milestones and get a nice plate of chicken wings with ketchup). I was finally clued in when I had a squid dish with undercooked beans. Undercooking beans isn't a hip gastronomic flourish, it just gives you food poisoning. Then I realized it wasn't that my palate was unsophisticated: it was that the food was sometimes greasy, sometimes unseasoned, often overcooked; sitting in the tiny, cramped, loud space is not fun; inhaling the smoke and fumes from the kitchen makes it hard to taste things. Even the drinks are severely hit or miss (one was so sour as to be undrinkable). Going to your foodie friend's house who just made wild boar sausages or a bear terrine or infused some booze and wants to make you dinner is a ton of fun, even if they have a few drinks and overcook it and the sauce is a little weird and the sides are underseasoned. Paying $200 at a restaurant for the same experience is not good.
Really not sure why this place is rated 4.8 with over 300 reviews... The we ordered 3 dishes when I went for my birthday, but only 1 of the 3 tasted good and all three were significantly undersized. The two dishes that didn't taste good were pretty awful. We ordered a cheese pasta from their "small" list, and the portion size looked like how much my cat would eat. Even if it's an appetizer, I shouldn't be finishing a pasta in 7 bites! Portion size aside, it was totally oversalted. $15 too! Not worth it! The other dish was an eggplant dish ($14) and it tasted awful. The cheese was completely mismatched with the tomato sauce, and the eggplant flavour was completely lost. All I could taste was a fight in flavour between the cheese and tomato. Oh, and there were only 2 slices of eggplant. Aside from food, the owner wasn't very respectable either. We saw him swipe a piece of beef from another group's appetizer, right in front of us in the open kitchen! What's hilarious is he walked near the back of the kitchen to finish it. As well, the music is blasted and you almost have to yell to let the person sitting beside you hear what you're trying to say. Overall very disappointing experience!
I just had the best burger and fries here. This is a must visit place if you want a great meal in Victoria.
I appreciate the effort but the food wasn’t all that good
You know I've never actually ordered anything off the menu. I usually go in there with a group of guys and just give the guys behind the bar money and they put meat in front of our faces. Very friendly people work there and food can be fantastic.
The very best. Very very best. Steaks perfect, sauces perfect, fish perfect, pasta perfect, desserts clever and... perfect. I can't find any criticism; flawless..
Fantastic food with a real relaxed chill feel. I've been 3 times now and have enjoyed myself every time.
Lads are lovely but the place is overpriced for what it is. Portions were small and the food could be better.
Simply awesome, my favourite restaurant in town.
We just had a great time there. The menu is definitely ballsy and/but great nonetheless. Ice cream with balsamic vinegar and quality olive oil? Fortunately, it was my first. Nice, fun staff. When sitting at the bar you can see the staff doing their thing. The music is surely not easy listening and sometimes a tad too loud. Like I said, we had a great time and really great food.
The owner and chef went above and beyond to accommodate my dietary restrictions and gave me an unfairly delicious truffle pasta. The drinks are delicious and unique, and the small space makes for a homier feel. I've been with a friend, a regular, twice now and I know I'll continue coming to Hank's on my own. Definitely recommend!!
It certainly impressed us with its unique menu and big flavour! Would love to try everything on the menu
Great food, great people, and an endlessly changing menu. The food is always creative and delicious, with a lot of care put into quality ingredients.
Simply the best. Innovative cuisine without the formality. Tiny place where you get to watch enthusiastic culinary magicians prepare your food in the tiny minimalist open galley. They are happy to share and chat about the wondrous creations they are working on. Always a great local beer or two in the cooler or on the tap and tasty wine or two to pair up with your food. Dishes are large so bring you appetite or someone to share with.
Great small restaurant with freaking awesome food!
A very different restaurant. Food was amaizing. I had a duck leg which was superb. The place is pricey though!
One of the hidden gems in Victoria. Amazing, rich , delicious food, great service!
Best restaurant in Victoria. Ask about locally picked mushrooms.
I wish I lived near this place. The pastrami sandwich was delicious.
Maybe the coolest restaurant I've ever been in. Along with a solid rock track heavy on Pearl Jam, the food is... I dont even know how to describe it... decadent, creole, and surprising. Delicious! And the staff are still friendly even with the hip vibe.
A small, blink and you'll miss it establishment, Hanks is a great place to have an intimate meal. The staff and owner are really friendly and give off a local vibe, chatting with them was a pleasure. I had a duck leg braised in wine and chocolate on some gnocchi; it was money well spent, and I would definitely go again to try their ever changing menu and specials.
This place was worth the 2000km drive from the Prairies. Go.Eat. Be Happy.
Another five stars for this fantastic restaurant. I've been half a dozen times and never been disappointed. The hardest part you need to get over is the menu prices which might seem high. $29 for a pork chop? But then you get said pork chop and realize you'd happily pay double the price AND do the dishes after dinner. The food is top notch, the menu always changing, great beers on tap. The food is excellent and you get the feeling the staff like their jobs. The owner is always there with a smile on his face. So refreshing to get such high quality without the attitude.
Have gone here twice, and look forward to the next, and the next one after that, and after that, etc. Food is very good value for the price, especially considering the quality and portion size. Owner is very pleasant and informative, makes for an excellent vibe. Tried the daily specials both times, loved them. Now my favourite BBQ place in Victoria!
The food and drinks were avantgarde but delicous. The drink service was quick, the food took a little longer but the quality made it worth it. They welcomed us despite coming very late. Tip: reserve a table in advance, there is little seating and showing up out of the blue and expecting a seat might not work.
Absolutely ridiculously good food. Couldn't recommend this place enough to any foodies out there. ????
Currently my favourite restaurant in Victoria. Locally sourced meats and vegetables. Foraged foods too. Try the brisket!
nice food
Best food in Victoria!!! This place is seriously outstanding, I even ordered a second main course! The range of flavour and presentation was truly impressive and had my taste buds tingling. It has a cosy atmosphere so not great for big parties, but great for a group of 4! Staff were friendly and really efficient. I will definitely be back.
I tried to have dinner there with the wife but they had rap on the speakers and it was cranked to 10. We couldn't hear each other talk :/
Just awesome. Came in with 3 friends. Told them that we didn't want to make any decisions all night. Just keep us boozed and fed. We were not let down. Amazing. Just amazing
Great food. Perfect meat
My boyfriend and I went there for dinner, after a fantastic flight of beer, great appetizer and delicious entre, I asked for our bill and a box to pack up. When the waiter came back he mentioned that he spoke with his business partner and that they'd cover our bill! We were completely blown away. It was the perfect end to such s great evening. Great food, drinks, and service. We highly recommend!
Great dinner experience in this intimate setting. Great food which mixes seasonal and unusual ingredients in a surprising and delicious combination. They have a "set menu" worth every penny which includes 6 dishes and is plenty! The cook is right there where you can see the magic happen. Drinks are nice too.
Honestly one of the best meals of my life. Came here during our stay in Victoria and everything was spot on. Try the tasting menu - you will not be disappointed.
One of the best meal I had in Victoria !! It's a small place but the ambiance was just amazing, the staff are great !!
One of the best dinners ever!!!!
Great food ... not what you would expect at first glance . Gourmet with a grunge flair....
Expect something that you have probably never experienced in dining before. If you’re looking for “safe”, as in Moxies or Cactus Club safe, this might not be the best place for that type of experience. If you’re adventurous, can appreciate organized chaos, want to get punched in the mouth with new flavors, aged meats, stinky cheese, this is the place. Hanks is chill, sometimes the music is loud, sometimes it’s not, the food is rustic and sophisticated. Menu changes daily. Tasting menu available at a ridiculously reasonable price, the tasting menu is one of the best values dining out in Victoria.
Although Hank’s has been around for a while, I’ve never thought to go there until recently. For my son’s birthday, who happened to be a red seal chef himself, I thought it would be a unique experience to sit at the counter to watch as the chef prepared our meal. When we got there, we were greeted and seated and began to peruse the menu. After admiring the selection of entrees, all made from locally sourced products from nearby farms, we opted for the sampler menu. For $65 per person we were treated to a smaller potion of 6 of the items from the menu. For an additional $50 per person we could have had wine pairings but decided to enjoy s couple of pints of local micro brews on tap. Our courses included a duck carpaccio with melons and goat cheese, an amazing puttanesca dish that was accented with herring and garlic chips, braised beef ravioli, potato and cheese gnocchi with fresh crab and corn, a molè risotto, and a potato dish to finish that was decadent and delicious! Every dish was presented by the staff with a description of the ingredients used, and where they were sourced. This was a great meal that allowed my son and I to enjoy the ambience, converse with the staff as they prepared the food, and savor each dish. This was an evening of fine food and savoring each plate that was presented. Fair warning.. the entire meal took just over 2 hours so this is not recommended for those looking to grab a quick bite. Also, seating is limited so making a reservation is a must.
Delicious as always, highly recommended. Never been disappointed.
The food was delicious, so was the beer!
Wow ! Unbelievable culinary experience. Forget the white linen and enjoy food as it was meant to be, no matter what you will be pleasantly surprised !
If you can get into Hank's, Go! Perfect for a special occasion! Clark even noticed our particular tastes and adjusted the pairings perfectly. Unique wines and drinks too.
Best food in Victoria, no joke. Was sent here by a local on my first trip to Vic and I have been back every chance I get! I can't say enough good about this place and anyone who asks I send them here.
Super friendly staff. Great food. Interesting take on bbq. Decent drinks list.
Small menu, great drinks.
Amazing food, awesome staff, great beer selection. Just do it.
Probably the best restaurant in Victoria. I've eaten here three times, and have been blown away every single time. It is expensive, but that's the cost of good food.
I have never had a meal less than stunning here. The staff is awesome, the atmosphere is amazing, and the menu always has something unique and interesting to try. You can tell there is some serious work put into sourcing the most excellent ingredients and even better is that they're local. My favorite eatery in Victoria, hands down, bar none.
Fabulous food, staff was very friendly!
The tasting menu is superb!
A friend and I got some takeout burgers and devoured them in my car. Cooked and seasoned perfectly, and messy as all heck (a good thing). 10/10 would devour in car again
Small restaurant but special foods! Now it's my favorite restaurant in Victoria
Eating here as I write this review. This is a studio filled with food artists pushing the boundaries...San Sebastián in Victoria...get out of town. Three of us and we are having the tasting menu...un believable!!!! This place has amazing reviews for a reason. This is a must for anyone looking for food utopia!!! It's here in Victoria. Love it can't wait to come back and I haven't left yet!!!!! Ok we r still here eating and I don't want to leave...this has been a sublime dining experience!!!! Well done guys!!!!
Visited Hank's a few weeks ago for dinner, and both the food and drinks were par. But, I got very sick later in the night after (in the bathroom for hours..). Whether it was food poisoning or a mis-identified wild mushroom in the dish we had, that was a rough time. I called the next day to let them know, but they were very apathetic/not concerned. Overall this left me very unimpressed.
Ordered for pick up in this crazy world and the food was beyond 5 ⭐️. I would eat the duck confit 3 times a day! Excited that they are offering pick up!!
we had a great meal here, really inventive and tasty twist on normal food!
This is our 'indulgence' restaurant, and we have never been disappointed. And these people know how to do a burger right! It's always fun to see what they have on the menu. If you have a large party, it's worth ordering the "everything" option and sharing. If you are a carnivore, go.
'Been waiting months to try Hanks out... was totally worth the wait! My wife had the carbonara, it was really flavorful and the portion was huge! I had the burger. Never had a rare burger before; I was definitely scared to try it, but glad that i did. It was so simple, just meat, cheese, and a bun, but it tasted so good! Just had to go in with trust... All I can say about Hanks is that you shouldn't go in there expecting to eat food off a line like you would at moxies or Earl's. These guys are professionals. They make food you only see on TV. You have to try it! Even the drinks have several layers of flavor. Try the Devils blood, or their home-made sodas. The only negative thing I have to say is that the portions were just too much for one person to eat; and I'm a big dude. Oh, and the avian nacho... to die for! If you haven't eaten at Hanks, what are you waiting for?
Simply Amazing!!! 10/10 Would go there again.
Delicious, well presented, high end food, with some really interesting menu items. Great beer and wine selection. Service was attentive and friendly. Atmosphere is probably not to everyone's liking, sort of like a heavy metal take on a high quality restaurant. It clearly isn't losing them any business, as their limited seats were almost all full the entire time I was there. Best for small groups.
Had ribeye steak, good food, friendly service, cosy place
I went here because it was highly recommended by friends. I also read through the Google reviews and people seemed to really like it. I understand that it's not a traditional restaurant, but overall the experience was not very good. The service was very poor, when the server was at our table he was extremely nervous and struggled to speak. When we asked about a wine he described it as cheap. One guest at our table was drinking beer. He finished his first beer in 15 minutes, was only offered 1 more over the next 2.25 hours. The dishes themselves were poorly executed, either being over seasoned or oiled. The gnocchi seemed to be cooked in a dirty pan. I did read before I went that the seats weren't comfortable as listed on your website. But why would you do a tasting menu that takes multiple hours and make people sit directly on a hard piece of unshaped wood. Also 3 of us sat at a 4 person table and the plates didn't fit, you don't need to put 2oz on a 14inch dinner plate. The meal for 3 ended up being over 300 dollars, with 2 and beers and one bottle of "cheap" wine. After finishing our meal we waiting at our table for 25 minutes with no food or drink. We had to wait at the door for our bill. If you can't execute on a slow night in February when the restaurant is empty I'd hate to see it on a busy night. I thought the concept was pretty neat, but extremely poor execution. I was quite embarrassed I suggested we go there. I have over a decade of restaurant experience having managed and worked all aspects of a restaurant. I have never left a review like this before, but really felt it necessary. Focus on food quality and guest experience!
Love the food. Enjoy bantering with the staff. Really different takes on food may not be to everybody's tastes but well worth visiting. Love their Missile Crisis drink.
One of the most innovative restaurants in Victoria. Everything they make is bursting with flavour and different from the norm in some way. Tonight I had a chicken skin taco with fois gras, steak tartar with mint, pork belly, and the most incredible rabbit and burrata cavatelli (with basil and peaches). All were mind. Blowing. Open your mind and your taste buds, you won’t be disappointed. On another level!!!
These guys deserve serious respect for what they are achieving. Ridiculously high standards of cooking worthy of many accolades. Accept, ney, embrace the imperfections, they know food.
Most interesting food in Victoria. Any version of the dry aged burger is going to be among the best you’ve ever had. Creative cocktails and always a great beer list. Sometimes hard to get in (e.g. on a Friday night at 7 during tourist season). There’s likely to be something on the menu you’ve always wanted to try or never even heard of.
Great food and cocktails. Very friendly staff
My favorite Restaurant in town. It might get a bit cramped. But food more than makes up for it.
Amazing food, atmosphere and staff. The whole package for sure.
Amazing staff, food and atmosphere. I have been several times bringing friends and they love it too.
Third time eating at Hank's, first time indoors since covid. I had the raw oysters, beets (shown), and the sablefish. Once again I can say that what I got was fresh, locally-sourced ingredients married together in a simple yet elegant way. The complementary flavors are well-chosen, unique, and bring the star of the dish to another level. Atmosphere was cozy, and the staff were welcoming and engaging. Definitely the place you want to go for a date night (make a reservation) or if you want to enjoy excellent ingredients you might otherwise neglect.
Food was amazing! Loved the ambiance. Very friendly staff.
One person said "how does this have 4.8 stars". I ask: why does it not have 4.9? This place is amazing. The food is special and something you can't get at a ordinary restaurant, all while prices are in reach. It is not your super fancy, snobby place, no this is a cool, young, fresh and tiny, yes it's very small, place. Go here if you want to try some good food that you would not expect that you will eat.
Amazing food and phenomenal service. Easily one of my favorite places to eat in Victoria!
Don’t know why this restaurant gets a rate so high... it’s definitely overrated. I always trust google rate until I visited this restaurant. My friend had diarrhea several years ago after dinning a pig tail here. Since it gets the high rate, I really wanted to try this 4.9 Star restaurant without my friend’s warning cuz I thought his sickness happened probably due to a coincidence. Horribly!! I had serious diarrhea and vomit when I got back home that night!! It had hurt my stomach terribly at least 2h at midnight... almost planned to go to hospital emergency. what drove me so crazy was my friend also had diarrhea several times at night!!! But fortunately he didn’t vomit... It’s just like food poisoning! I barely had any other food that day, ordered duck noodles and my friend had 1 pound pork as pics. The duck was terrible... feeling like it was simply boiled and put some Costco tomato sauce. My noodles were over cooked sadly. Honestly , the pork my friend ordered was not too bad.. the homemade aloe soda tastes just like soda mixing with sweetener. Btw we waited more than 20 mins for the those horrible meals. The waiter was kind however...
Perfect. The creativity found at Hank's manifests in a culinary experience that is both sublime and exciting. Do yourself a favour - eat here and eat often.
unbelievable food, the place is tiny but the food is so worth it
Amazing top notch casual fine dining Ate there again recently Couldn't agree more Twerked their menu to accommodate With a favorite wine pairing too Best in town if you are adventurous
Small restaurant (really small) with about 3 working staff. Very casual atmosphere with friendly staff. The food was amazing. I believe the menu changes from time to time so for the foodies out there, this place is a must. The chef even came out to greet us after and ask about the food! The elk was cooked perfectly medium rare. Everything else we order, cod and mac and cheese dishes, were just as delicious. Highly recommend prebooking online and trying anything on the menu, you can't go wrong.
Fantastic. Very high quality ingredients crafted into lovingly made creative and unique dishes. Incredible wines too.
Boar meat with sweet peppers with lots of sauce that’s very salty to eat Has 18 seatings capacity, very disappointed to eat there
Underwhelming....good quality. Not worth hyping up but also worth trying.
Amazing creative food. Lovely staff, great drinks.
Extremely unsanitary, I was at the bar, and witnessed the chef cut up a peach, a cooked rabbit and a piece of raw pork on the exact same cutting board! You will also notice how sticky and dusty the tables are. Food was very soso/poor. After reading and looking at pictures posted previously (2-3 years) I think the kitchen staff has changed since Covid. We ordered the pork leg, the chef had to go to the back of the kitchen to ask another staff how to cook it, it came out very dry and salty. When we expressed our disappointment, they did remove the item from our bill but the the staff asked us to pay and leave in a very rude manner (the guy bang the machine on the counter and crushed our bill), I have never experienced such poor customer service… If you come to Victoria for vacation, please avoid this place to not kill your mood and ruin your overall impression of the city.
I've only been here the one time, but man oh man will I be back! This small, intimate restaurant is perfect for those looking for something romantic, local and very charming. There is only about 15 seats in the entire restaurant and I don't believe they take reservations. It's more of a: if they have room- you better take advantage of it. I wish I was able to go into more depth as to what these guys do- but pretty much everything they do is made in house from scratch.
Best place to eat in Victoria and worth every penny. Considering the place only seats 18, they are always packed and sometimes with a lineup outside. In addition to an excellent rotation of draft beer, the cocktails are fun and delicious, and every single item on the menu is fantastic.
Love this place and like how the menu changes frequently. Small place so it's perfect.
Easily the best joint in Victoria. I got the tasting menu. Extremely diverse, unique, perfectly prepared and presented Friendly staff, in a tiny venue, first class service from the chef. My only regret is wasting so many trips to Victoria before finding this gem.
Always thoughtful and has the touch of owners/operators that care about the experience.
Have you not heard of Hanks? This place is an absolute dream. Follow them on Instagram @hanksvic
If you like elbow room, you might find this place a bit claustrophobic, but the food here is seriously fantastic. Original, flavorful and expertly executed. They also play an interesting mix of non-commercial music. Everything from Bollywood to Beethoven while I was eating lunch. Nice people to boot. But the food is the reason to go. Well worth what you pay considering the quality.
Unique menu, alwys delicious. Great drinks. Very small so you have to get your name on a list usually or show up a bit before they open. Worth waiting for.
4.8? I don’t think their food is worth it. Open kitchen, so u can see how the chef cook. Butter, butter, butter.... most dishes use butter to fry. I tried the tasting menu including six courses. It s not a typical tasting menu, just six hot main courses coming with small portions. No starter and appetizer. Flavors remain the same, salty and buttery. Background music is fun, bar DJ rock. It’s a cool place for beer but definitely not for great food. The cocktail...I saw they how to make egg white using bare hand!
We went for dinner based on the 4.7 out of 5 star rating. Really not sure how or who is leaving these reviews in order for this restaurant to rate so high. I leave my review in the hopes that other people's evening out is not ruined by coming to this place for dinner, as well as in the hopes that whoever is running this place can somehow do something about it to turn this place around. Four of us went for dinner. I will start by saying that I am usually the person that adds salt to my meal. My wife and i ordered 2 dishes to share, the Clams and the fried chicken. The clams dish was so salty that i found it to be not edible ( remember that I'm the one that likes salty) , the fried chicken was served with a gravy that was also super salty, then as i cut in to the center of the chicken it was very pink ( uncooked) . Both of these dishes were deducted from our bill. My daughter ordered the Trout dish, which came out on cubed potatoes ( like hash browns) but the entire plate was swimming in gravy. My daughter's friend ordered the Scallops / risotto which consisted of 3 scallops served on one ladle of risotto for $25 !!!! I would not even consider this sufficient fo a kids meal. Had the food been stellar with small portions I could live with that. The feeling I got was that whoever was cooking had no idea what they were doing. The worst part about this is that it was the one evening that we had to go out to dinner and it was absolutely ruined! Don't make the same mistake.
I took my lady there based on reviews alone for a date night that she requested. The reviews said less than 18 seats in the whole place, but the food is awesome. Well, it's exactly like they say; AWESOME. The chef/waiter warned me that the skillet was stupid hot, and after 4 weeks, the crazy 1" burn by my wrist is still sore and itchy, lol, but I'd go back in a heartbeat. Might need to take her back soon for another date night? Hmmm...
So disappointing. I’m not sure why this place is so highly rated. Had the wagyu steak and it was very gristly and tough. Couldn’t eat it- The mushrooms were good, but definitely not a place i would return to or recommend. I dont generally write reviews, but felt that the ratings at this place were not appropriate.
The food itself was good even though I'm not fully convinced that was real wagyu. Prepare your ears for aggressive music. I don't mind it so much; it's repeating my order 5 times over the music that's irritating. Overrated.
Easily the best restaurant in Victoria, in my opinion! We come here every chance we get. Come with an open mind and try something that sounds interesting - I have never been disappointed with anything I've had here.
Fantastic food. Always changing menu and specials. Great staff.
An interesting place, food is trendily adventurous. Recommended for casual drinks or raucous dinner with a small group. Not the best for bringing visiting parents or catching up on a more intimate level.
The best food in Victoria! Love this place! Drinks are great, music decent, always a great time
I love it here and crave it weekly. Hidden gem. Totally worth every cent.
Lovely Staff, who talked me through their excellent food - at length!
Amazing. The food, all of it - the bread, the burrata, the mindblowingly tasty carbonara - were top class. The service was very friendly but not formal at all, which made me feel like home. The price, I thought, was very, very reasonable at least for someone who lives in the UK. The only minor complaint I'd have is that the music was perhaps a touch too loud, sometimes making conversation a bit awkward. But I will definitely come back the next time I'm here.
An ever-changing but consistently tasty menu and very friendly staff.
They have the best pulled pork I've ever eaten!
Outstanding, very meat heavy restaurant. I am still amazed at the value at Hanks.
