Ordered take out tonight because we couldn’t get a last minute reso and it did NOT disappoint! We were a group with a vegetarian and gluten free person and everyone had a really incredible selection. All the dishes were incredible, the staff was lovely and the vibe of the restaurant was excellent. Looking forward to planning ahead for a reso next time to try those cocktails!

I can barely point out where Afghan is on the world map even today. Before I came here, my knowledge of this country is limited in war, porvety and illness, nothing related to food ~ especially the delicious one. Tonight's experience changed that. It was a wonderful dinner. To me Afghanistan cuisine seems a bit like a fusion between mid-east as well southasia style, but more healthy ~ at least in Zarak, coz they're using a lot of vegetables. The meats were excellent cooked, tender, full of flavors and not too oil. Technically, It's better than some local steak houses such as KEG ~ in some ways, if not all ways. Sauce for each course was very well balanced and really make foods taste better. The portion is not small (as I was told before), 2 small plates + 1 dumpling (small size) + 1 dastakhan + 1 kebab is enough for 2 adults. We're too full to have dessert, maybe next time. Waiter/ress are very well trained, nice, kind and full of knowledges. The only problem is their tables are really small, space is super narrow. And, it will be much comfortable if they have hot water in washroom, especially in such cold snowing night ~ okay not snowing now, but was going to snow in couple hours. I think we'll be back next time, when we want to have some good meats. They did wonderful job, thanks Zarak.

Amazing! From the minute you enter you are taken care of the place didn't have an empty seat, but never the less you never felt it! The staff are awesome, well organized and definitely worth it! Beautiful interior, cutlery, mood, everything was great honestly!

I had an amazing dining experience at this new Afghan restaurant! I loved the attention to detail from the lighting to the Arabic writing on the mirror to the beautiful plates and cutlery. Our server was so knowledgeable, he provided some background on Afghan culture and traditions and explained each dish. I recommend starting off with the Gulrang rose. It's a pretty and refreshing gin-based cocktail. For an appetizer you need to try the mantu dumplings, the spiced beef was so good! For mains we tried two lamb dishes: Uzbeki palaw (rice that's usually only served at Afghan weddings) and shana-e-lamb (slow-cooked lamb shank topped with eggplant). Make a reservation as they're usually pretty booked!

Noah O

Highly recommend the hummus and dumplings. The lamb shoulder was a little dry and that dish was a little bland. Good experience here will try the other dishes

The food was very unique to what is available in Vancouver. Great atmosphere, service, and people makes the experience a wonderful one. Definitely makes for a great place for a date night and a good introduction to Afghan flavours. I hope this is a start to more places offering a glimpse into the culture.

Cecilia L

Simply Delicious! The flavours don’t try to impress you, they just do naturally - a testament to what must be seasoned cooking methods, pun intended. Each dish we had brought out the delectable essence of the main ingredient, be it whatever protein or veg. We tried a good number: chicken, beef, goat, spinach, and eggplant. The drinks and desserts represented a truly unique creative thought process - just yummy, period. And last but not least, the service left nothing to be desired - friendly, informative, attentive, and gracious. Superb food, people, and atmosphere! Ok, maybe that wasn’t the last point… no matter where you sit, it’ll just feel cozy and unpretentious.

Ziad Alam

The atmosphere was amazing and also the service. I had a higher expectation for food and dessert. I ordered Uzbaki Pawla which comes with shredded lamb with rice. The taste was ok but I only found a tiny piece of lamp in a big pile of rice. I was a bit disappointed. I would go there for drinks and appi but main dishes were not as exciting as I was hoping for. Overall it was a good experience.

Found out about this restaurant and was very excited to try it seeing as I love Afghan food. Me and my boyfriend came here, reluctant that we would get a seat last minute, but we thought we’d give it a shot, we asked the host if he could seat two people he advised us that it would be about a 30-40 min wait and took our name down and phone number on the iPad system, he told us to come back in 30 minutes we then asked if they would call us and he said that he would call us when the table was almost ready. We wait 45 mins still no call so we decide to show up there, he then tells us that there are 4 tables leaving and that one will be ready in under 5 minutes and to wait. we wait ANOTHER 30 MINUTES IN THE RESTAURANT as we watch him seat several people that came after us, I try to get his attention several times seeing as they are basically closing in half an hour and he doesn’t make any eye contact doesn’t even say anything no communication whatsoever. Appalling. Just tell us if you’re full so we can at least go somewhere else instead of waiting almost 2 hours for a table we essentially never got.

SO excited to have this new restaurant within a few block of my apartment! Just had the first of what I anticipate being many visits. We ordered 4 dishes- eggplant with bread, chicken kebab with Afghan rice pilaf, aushak (vegetarian) dumplings, and roasted brussels sprouts- and 2 drinks (loved my Gulrang Rose). All delicious- flavourful, unique, well-presented. I also loved the actual dishware and cutlery- very beautiful! Apparently all custom-made (I asked!). Check this place out soon- I imagine resos will be hard to come by once word gets out.

Simeon Garratt

Wow, this was an excellent choice. The food was exceptional. I ordered the Daal, and my partner ordered the Spinach. Both dishes were really delicious, and the level of service and attention to detail were remarkable. I can't wait to go back.

Food lovely. Tasty. Staff polite. Last night dine out not great. Asked to leave due to set reservation time. Staff in our face. Couldn't enjoy the end of the meal. I know new restaurant but it appeared they were inconsistent in their approach to getting people to leave.

Really beautiful space, great atmosphere, really delicious food. We had a great time here and I definitely recommend! We had the eggplant with naan, fried chicken, brussel sprouts, leek dumplings, and spicy chicken with potatoes. The spicy potatoes and the brussel sprouts and the naan were probably my favourite. Cant want to come back and try more. The cocktails were also really beautiful!

Our dining experience at Zarak was absolutely exquisite. From start to end, the service was phenomenal with an attention to detail rarely seen in restaurants. Our server carefully explained each item on the menu from drinks to food to dessert and made sure to guide us but also let us make our own choices. The food was outstanding with flavours that were complex but also refreshing. We ate a large amount of food and normally you feel gross after but we felt really light after this meal. Lastly, I wanted to mention the dessert. The rose ice cream was absolutely to die for and I would come back just for that. Overall a great experience at Zarak and we will definitely be back!

5 stars for the appetizer and main, 4.9 stars for the dessert, 100 stars for the welcoming and warm staffs.

Delightful experience. The plates had a remarkable attention to detail and flavour while retaining a friendly, home-cooked feel. The drink selection is also carefully cultivated and innovative. Warm and knowledgeable servers. And lastly, gorgeous cutlery and dinnerware - the utensils have a nice heft to them.

The food was excellent as was the service and ambiance. Super friendly owners and waitstaff. We had the bolani, mantu and lamb shank. All delicious and the two of us were stuffed. This is a great addition to the neighbourhood and we will definitely be back. I highly recommend it.

We were so well-taken care of tonight! We ordered a lot of food and had to pack half of it to take home because we just really underestimated the size of the "small plates". We ordered the eggplant (which came with four slices of naan), the pakarwa, bolani (small), mantu dumplings (small), aushak dumplings (small), the Shana-e-Lamb, and the rose pannacotta (in hindsight, this is clearly too much food for two people). Not only was everything very delicious and flavourful, but the portions were very big so it was excellent value for money as well. We particularly enjoyed the eggplant, the Mantu dumplings, and the Shana-e-Lamb. The drinks were unique (in a good way) and you can't skip the panna cotta - a bright finish to our meal! Service was perfect - very attentive without being overbearing. I can definitely see this place booking out well in advance once word gets out so get in while you still can.

Overall - really, really good. Started with cocktails, tried a couple and both were interesting tasteful takes on classic drinks. The drink list was solid and the majority of cocktails looked tasty and unique. We ordered three small plates: The flatbread, dumplings, and brussel sprouts, they were all delicious. The dumplings were an interesting and spicy middle-eastern take on a "typical" dumping, almost close to a cabbage roll in consistency, excellent. Brussel sprouts were cooked perfectly and placed on a bed of tasty hummus. The flatbread was the standout though, stuffed with a veggie paste and served alongside a couple awesome side dip/toppings. The service was great, staff was enthusiastic and helped us pick a good mix of drinks and food items to compliment each other. Decor was solid, loved the cutlery and pottery-style cups. Music wasn't too loud, and the lighting was fine. Definitely recommend, easily stands up to the Vancouver classics like Nuba, Jamjar and Afghan Horseman.

Rafi Meher

It was a very average experience. The host at the door was upset because I was a few minutes late and couldn’t find parking. He said he is going to give our table away in one hour even though you are supposed to have 2 hours per reservation. Our waiter was very nice and friendly though. The food was average and a bit dry. Dumpling was way too spicy. It was a very rushed experience as we had to leave sooner than 2 hours.

Ogulsheker Mammetgurbanova

this is the best place in town for Afghan food. Owners, servers, bar tenders kitchen, the whole lot. 5 star service, 5 star food quality 5 star atmosphere. if you haven't had Afghan food before this is the place that sets the bar and you'll be hard pressed to find a better place.

We were so excited to try Zarak because we love Afghan Kitchen and it did not disappoint! The food was delicious and it did not feel like a repetition of Afghan kitchen! the ambiance was great and we cannot wait to be back!

Upscale Afghan restaurant - a welcome addition to the Vancouver dining scene that includes a good variety of both vegetarian and meaty dishes. Cosy, intimate atmosphere, perfect for date night (and a big plus in my books) with music soft enough that we could hear each other speak and none of the staff were wearing strong perfumes. Food - Started with the eggplant appetizer, which was refreshing and generously-sized, and the mantu spiced beef dumplings (small). They had a good filling to wrapper ratio and served over lentils with two healthy dollops of yogurt. I found the meat a touch sweet for me, but my dining companion disagreed and said they were perfect. This was followed by the bolani with potato stuffing (small as well), which was my favourite dish of the evening. The red chutney is a nice spice level and absolutely amazing. Next we had the sirloin kebab and ordered a side of qabuli (spiced rice with raisins). The sumac added a unique peppery tartness to the meat. Lastly we had firni jar, a cardamom spiced rice pudding for dessert -- so rich, so smooth...so good! It was also great that many dishes had small/large options so you could try multiple dishes. BTW, we ordered maybe one dish too many for two people, but it was so delicious that it was worth the extra calories. Drinks - The kite negroni I had was excellent, and quite Instagramable if you're into that sort of thing. The table also had an elegant carafe of water with pomegranate arils and lemon/limes. We finished the night with Turkish coffee and sheer chai, a pink tea with cardamom and milk (oat milk option available). Service - Professional, engaging, and attentive. They explained each dish as it was served and our water carafe was miraculously always full. The dishes came out at a nice pace; as soon as one dish was finished, another filled its spot so the table was never overcrowded, even though we ordered quite a bit.

Worst customer service. So i had made a reservation for my friends birthday. She ended up bringing her daughter. When we got to the restaurant we stood for awhile waiting to be greeted and then when we were finally greeted were very rudely and dismissively told that we did not have a table and they were too busy to accommodate. And then if that wasn’t rude enough we were told to move aside. We were so excited to try this restaurant being avid foodies in the vancouver food scene but after out experience we will never go back there and will not recommend this restaurant.

There's really nothing like this in downtown Vancouver; a hidden gem for now but not for long. Can't say enough about the dishes we had. The fried chicken, pawkawras, lamb shank and chicken kebabs were delicious. Portion sizes were great as well and had plenty for leftovers. The drinks that were served to us were fantastic too. A+, highly recommend

The portions are larger than what you'd expect from the upscale setting! Ice-cream is a must-have. Definitely will return and make up for my foreign partner's tipping error (they don't tip in his country).

I hope Zarak brings the people in because this place is very special. The interior is modern and modest. The plates, dishware and cutlery are eye-catching and unique. Service was impeccable and knowledgeable. I had no experience with Afghani cuisine and remain a novice. However, everything I tasted was excellent. The fried chicken was crisp and moist with a garlic, red chili yogurt that added a satisfying level of heat. The dumplings were a highlight. Each bite released a fragrant flavor of beef, onions and spices all encased in a light, but sturdy dumpling. Admittedly, for the mains we got two lamb dishes, but despite the protein overlap both were delicious. Both mains could satisfy two people on their own. The Uzbeki lamb curry and lamb shank featured moist and tender lamb. If I had to pick one, the Uzbeki comes out on top. The palaw rice, fragrant bean curry brought a wider variety of flavours over the lamb shank dish. Dessert was light and not too sweet: a rose water ice cream with clotted cream and a milk pudding similar to a pana cotta. The cocktail program is worth trying. The Kabul cocktail was a highlight. Complex flavours and spirit forward. Plenty of vegetarian, gluten free and vegan options available.

We really enjoyed our meal! We shared the beef dumplings, bread, and chicken kabobs with rice. The bread (apologies I am blanking on the proper name) was so soft you cut it with a knife and fork. Oh and FINALLY a restaurant that puts effort into their non-alc drinks menu and even puts it at the TOP of their drinks menu - as someone who no longer drinks, it feels like you’re part of the party now and not an afterthought with pop, coffee or tea (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Plus the drinks themselves were divine - not too sweet. Like I want a drink, not a liquid dessert ????. Service was incredibly attentive and vibe/noise was perfect: crowded in that every table was full but the tables were spaced out enough and the music didn’t blare. Food came out quickly and it was always easy to get the attention of a server. The chicken was cooked perfectly. I think I overcook my chicken.

The kindest and most professional service of some of the most delicious food Ive ever tasted. The rose panacotta is a complete experience! I don't drink alcohol and often uninspired by most restaurant's drinks menu- not Zarak's! Really refreshing and interesting beverages. Beautifully served, with attention to detail including the glassware. A non-drinkers paradise! Though...my friend's having the cocktails seemed pretty satisfied as well! Cant wait to go back and try everything on the menu! Thanks for a wonderful evening.

This was a really lovely dining experience. The cocktail list was fun, the food was tasty and flavors well balanced and it was just a really fun meal to share with a group of friends. Wow! From the outside we knew the ambiance was calming, but upon walking in the waiters and waitresses were extremely welcoming and ensured a customer was taken care of properly. I haven’t yet been to any other restaurant where the waiter/waitress have come up periodically to check in with the customer, create small talk, as well as, demonstrate their knowledge of the food served. Our waiter not only provided our meal, but also spent time explaining each part of the meal. That was phenomenal service. One of the main reasons I would come back in the future. I’m regards to the food itself, I would say it was fairly delicious - for some items, more spice and flavour is preferred personally. That being said, I absolutely loved the Dumplings: Cabbage, Carrot, Bean Sprout, Chilli and Lubya ; it was quite flavourful and the spice definitely kicked in! The yogurt was such a nice compliment to the dumplings and beans, it really went well with the flavours. I also liked how moist the Chicken Kebab was. Oh and can’t forget the uniqueness of the Rose Pannacotta, I’m glad I didn’t leave without trying it.

Seriously great food, service and atmosphere. Great for date nights or nights out with friends. A warm feel that chases the vancouver rain blues away. Love love love this spot! I live in the neighbourhood so had a close eye on the construction and couldn't wait to get in to try it out. I went with a party of four for their grand opening night and all of us couldn't stop saying how great the experience was. The decor is beautiful, the service is amazing and the staff are very knowledgable. We allowed the server to choose our menu items for us as a tasting menu experience and every single thing was incredible! This is definitely a must try and such a great addition to Mount Pleasant. We will definitely be back!

Tried this new Afghan place and was impressed. We had the fried chicken, mantu dumplings, chicken with spicy potato and afghan four spice, new Zealand lamb kebab, and the uzbaki lamb rice. The standouts for me were the mantu dumplings and the uzbaki lamb rice which is really flavourful! I would go back just for the rice, it is that good. The main chicken dish was competent but did not stand out compared to everything else we had. I would probably try a different main next time. The drink with the melona bar was very unique. Ambiance and decor were really nice and service was attentive. I would come back especially as there are not that many restaurants that serve this kind of food in Vancouver and am glad that Zarak is here.

Hands down, dinner at Zarak is truly an exceptional dining experience! We had not heard of Zarak until we stumbled upon it through 'Dine Out Vancouver', and the food and atmosphere is phenomenal. It instantly has become our one of our top favourite local restaurants, and is sure to become one of Vancouver's most sought after dining establishments in just a matter of time. In addition to the plating and quality of food, the service is also of the highest caliber. Our waitress Meryam spent the time to educate us on the menu offerings and provided detailed recommendations based on our preferences. Fantastic new addition to the Vancouver dinning scene. We came here for dine out not really knowing what to expect. Ordered some appys first, as we settled in. Fried chicken and a Beef Kebab, I guess I expected smaller portions being a higher end establishment, and I was starving but as the food arrived we realized that the portions here are a good size! Taste wise both were fantastic, unique flavours you don't often find, with a hint of spiciness. Now we're excited to order the rest of the dine out menu. Had dumplings, and brussel sprouts. Both were next level tasty. Then Lamb shank and Eggplants were the mains. By now we realized there was no way we were going to finish all this food. The mains were also delicious, I mean this place is unstoppable! With only 50% of the main course finished we decided to pack the rest of the food home because we wanted to save room for desserts. Milk pudding with blueberry jam, reminiscence to Panna Cotta, and a Rose Water ice cream slash gelato frozen dessert. Again, generous portions and unbelievably tasty. We tried 8 different items on the menu and all were absolutely amazing. What are the chances of that? For drinks, we had the Negroni and the Afgan Mule, delicious again and the Negroni is very Instagramable in it's presentation. Some of the best service I have received and the room is tastefully decorated and has a vibrant feel. I can't say enough good things about this place and I can't wait to go back there.
