A great restaurant for a fresh take on NW Cuisine. Great for food connoisseurs.
A perennial favourite for casual fine dining. Completely unpretentious, but impeccable service in a beautiful space - get a table in the rear atrium for a more secluded, quiet dinner. Beautiful plates of impeccable-quality and inventive food, with a great cocktail and wine menu to go with it.
I can’t express how incredibly enjoyable the meal was overall! The bread was a 13/10 for me. The first appetizer course with the oysters, beef & toro tartare on a fried shiso leaf, and the sourdough with truffle butter was so incredible. Most likely my favorite part of the meal. The yellowtail with rice was so incredible, definitely my more favorited main item we received. The sake cooked cod was not our taste but I can recognize the expertise in the cooking of the fish. The cod could have done without the caviar sauce. I just don’t think that’s a good way to enjoy caviar. The lamb chop was beautifully done but it was not my taste. The dessert was a bit lackluster but the beginning of the meal was so incredible I can brush off the lamb and dessert.
The food is ok. BUT the male middle-age serve with glasses is so mean to us. He ignored us from the time we sat around the table and with no patience when explaining the menu to us, actually, kind of rude. I have never met this kind of server before. I will never visit that restaurant again.
Great food, but a tad bit pricey for what you get. Still worth checking out though, in my opinion. Really enjoyed their seafood!
The food is okay but the service is amazing. The blonde guy is an excellent waiter
I love food, so I decided to go there in my last day in Vancouver to enjoy having dinner. Some dishes were amazing and some others were just good. For the price you pay, I was expecting something more. They asked me for my opinion at the end of the meal which was a professional gesture. In the end, I was invited to have dessert on the house. Overall I enjoyed my time there.
I’m lacking words to express how happy I was with my experience at l’Abattoir! ❤️ I know I can be critical when it comes down to food even with myself but in this case, I can’t even think of anything I didn’t like or would have liked differently. The service, the team, the food, the wines, the ambiance and the presentation: everything was beyond my expectations!! Great job guys, I can’t wait to be back in Vancouver now that I have a good reason to go!
Fabulous meal at L'Abattoir. My friend had the duck pate terrine which he said was excellent. I had the scallops, which were also very good. He had the sable fish which was cooked perfectly and enhanced with a tandoori influenced sauce. A unique treatment of the sable fish which was an outstandingly good compliment to the fish. I had the halibut, also delicious. We both had the Lemon Sllyabub. Fantastic flavour burst with interesting texture. Professional and pleasant, unobtrusive service. They were out of the Le Vieux Pin "Ava" but the Avrill Creek was a worthy stand-in. Terrific meal and a great way to show off Vancouver's culinary scene to my German friend.
One of my favorite happy hours in the city! Great wine choices and always interesting dishes to pair with the wine!
Celebrated two birthdays here. Service is superb. Duck and lamb dishes were both respectively done just right. The cocktails are wonderful, my favorites being the Negroni, cake walk and don draper. Wood beams, brickwork, lighting fixtures and a well appointed bar with the right amount of lighting makes this a very romantic venue.
Been going to this restaurant over the YEARS, and always Consistent always on their game really cant say anything bad, the Classic Steak Diane is a safe choice always good, never had a bad meal here yet
The atmosphere was fun but busy. I received my meal lukewarm. I asked my 3 dining companions if theirs was and the reply was yes. I figured it was supposed to be served that way. The server checked in and I told her about my meal and she promptly returned it to the kitchen. I received my meal back nice and hot. It was divine and worth waiting for. I had the seared scallops. It was pricey but in the end happy we went.
Their dine out menu 2018 was really good.
Always amazing! I come here on a quarterly basis hoping for a new menu and they never disappoint. Food selection is small, but consistently executed beautifully. The sweet bread is a must order. I am not generally a fan and would always order this dish. The cocktail list is very creative-complex and leans more towards booze forward that always hits all the notes on my palette.
Went here for brunch, food was good, service as well. Neighborhood is beautiful. My only complaint was too much jam on the scone.
Dinner
Amazing brunch with breakfast cocktails
Beautiful food and a great wine list
Had the gaoler’s menu and it was superb. Not cheap for a tasting menu, but the quality and flavour of the dishes made for a fantastic meal. Would highly recommend it.
Food is excellent cocktails are amazing.
Wonderful, romantic restaurant in the heart of Gastown (Vancouver); make a reservation, relax, and enjoy -- creative food and generally worth the $.
Every dish we tasted was delicious. Beautifully served and presented. The chef took care of every small detail. Great gourmet experience.!
Outstanding. Food was over-the-top good, staff was excellent
Avocado gimlet - nice and creamy - not avocado-ey at all - one is not enough Three alcohol free cocktails - the one with ginger beer stands out Tried all the appies except the sweetbreads - all good Presentation and speed were great The calf carpaccio was the most memorable - however they call it veal tartare for some silly reason I would try the sweetbreads next time - since everything else was delicious (Was the foie gras salty - or the bread had been spread with salted buttered - jury is out -must return!) Note - the gluten basket is charming - especially the anchovy twisty croissant Surprise! Note to vegetarians - one of the bread rolls (brioche?) has bacon Bonus - chef made us a beet salad as an extra veggie entree - delicious and appreciated - :D Mains - wish there was a vegan friendly main - instead of choosing an appy We had cod, lamb, char and beef tenderloin - the food was amazing. Ignore the comments about portion sizes being too small - the solution - order an appetizer, a main and desert. We had all the deserts. The butter tart was the big hit. All Delicious - however I wish they had sorbet - a tart lemon and cranberry. Coffee was a french press carafe brough to the table. Not a dark roast - but very hot. Tuesday 5:30 reservations. Service was acomodating. Two or threes times i had to make an effort to get noticed. They don’t have eyes in the back of heads like some places. Slight mood killer. Notes - appy ideas / special orders - the gnocchi like cheese balls served with the cod - order them seperately! Also if you aren’t getting the steak - must order the whipped potato side. Will go again
Loved it. Pacific Northwest with a twist. Great drinks!
One of the best spots in the city! Great food good atmosphere would definitely a spot to check out! All the staff are friendly and knowledgeable Menu has a lot of variety and options - good cocktail list, nice interior ! Trully a 5 star experience and deserves a 5 star review ! Would recommend !
phenomenal high end restaurant that is not at all pretentious, incredible atmosphere and absolutely wonderful food. Perfect spot for a special occasion meal/date
Highly recommend :)
Never again. The food portions are sooooo tiny. We paid $44 for the Steak Diane BUT there was only 3 ounces of meet on the plate. Complete rip off. They should be embarrassed to sell such small portions for such a high price. Don’t order the scallops as there won’t be any on the plate. You will leave hungry.
Great for fancy night out. They have wonderful wine paring for their food.
A bit pricey but food taste very good. Local wines are also good here.
We were looking forward to dining here. Manager was very unprofessional on the phone. We booked a Christmas Staff Dinner months in advance for 7 persons. They phone us five days prior to our reservation and informed us that they can only accommodate for a party of 6.... We insisted that this reservation had already been confirmed with whomever we had spoken to over the phone, and on top of that we received a confirmation email. This was devastating and inconvenient for us considering it is very difficult to make reservations during the holidays with such short notice. The manager reluctantly said that they will make it work and proceeded to hang up on us. As a result, our staff decided we no longer wanted to dine considering their lack of professionalism and customer service. We did phone to cancel and the manager apologized, but seemed relieved that she can accommodate her over-booked evening. There was no empathy or emotion towards the fact that our plans were now forced to be cancelled as they could not seat one extra person. We, at the very least, would have liked more notice so that we can re-book our Christmas party. Management interpersonal skills could be improved as well.
Great service, amazing food, cool location and decor. Also expensive.
OH MY GOD, I love this place in every bits! The excellent food, excellent drinks, excellent service. *Slurp*
Amazing service. Steak Diane was beautifully done and dessert was heavenly
Loved it. Will certainly go back again. Romantic
The oysters were so good
Very nice location and space. Almost too much attention to service otherwise excellent. Brunch was great (small portions but very rich and well executed). Coffee was above average. Looking forward to visiting again for dinner or for a chance to sit at the unusual bar up front and have a drink.
Incredible wine list, inventive menu and passionate, knowledgable staff. Our new favourite spot in Vancouver!
Delicious food, came here during dine out
I had Sunday Brunch. This restaurant serves very tasty dishes and the interior is stylish. The servers were so friendly and very helpful.
Terrific restaurant, had the duck and was awesome as was everything else we had. The service was just outstanding, on top of everything but yet not at all "on top of you". Would be the first place I would plan to go for dinner the next time in town.
Wonderful food and tasty drinks!
Amazing food and service. Will definitely go back.
Really a special place. We dined here twice (dinner & brunch). Both meals were outstanding. The dining area in the back looks out on the bricks of the old jail house courtyard. Service was impeccable and the food well thought out and executed.
Possibly the best food and cocktails I've ever had!
Best cocktails in Gastown, scallops were delicious!
Fantastic food, great wine and cocktail menus. Service was to notch.
Easily the best duck I've ever had and the service was impeccable at every level
The food and service was great here. Everything tasted good even the complimentary bread. Only complaint was that at the time we were there they did have a lot of fruit flies around which wasn't all too appealing. None the less great experience.
Outstanding food and service!
Food and service on point, as usual. Definitely one of the top restaurants in Vancouver.
The best food at a restaurant of this style in the city. Everything tastes fabulous! I love their chilled affogato so much......
Wow, was very impressed by the menu selection and presentation. The tastiest meal I’ve had so far this year. Every plate from the freshly baked bread basket to the appertizers, to the entree and finally dessert was unbelievably delicious. All the flavours blended well. This was a great choice for a special occasion. It’s a very pricey menu but certainly worth every penny. Meals are between $45 - 60 per plate. I discovered a chardonnay that is my absolute favourite now and apparently limited quantities. Large wine selection. Contemporary ambiance with fine dining experience. Love this restaurant.
Fabulous service, incredible food. Great place to take someone new to town or a client.
Very good, but very hot, they need to crack a window. Friendly staff.
Simply one of the very best dining experiences in Vancouver. You must eat here
Love the atmosphere here, but unfortunately the service is not the same as it used to be. It's been a few years since I have been here but I found the servers to be in our face, fake and obnoxious- It was hard to relax. The food was good overall but i found the main dishes were too salty. I will overlook this restaurant next time I am looking for a night out.
***HAAPY HOUR ONLY REVIEW*** The hubs and I were there for happy hour, which is from 5:30-6:30pm daily. We were ushered to the bar as we walked in at 5:41pm. The bar (where happy hour is available) had 2 other patrons. It appears that the bar can seat max. of 12 patrons. Happy hour menu is 50% of almost all appetizers on the regular menu (as of 2017 summer menu, the exception to HH is the foie gras and the oysters), $7 cocktail of the day (negroni at the time we were there), $5 selected beer, and $6 red/white wine. The bartender was very attentive and served to our needs. We ordered the negroni, red wine, pork cheeks, smoked salmon, and beef tartare. Everything was amazing! Flavourful, large portions for an appetizer. The drinks were delicious! The kitchen service timed it so that our appetizers come out one at a time. We had our plates changed after every dish. Overall, we will definitely come back again to try out different appetizers created by the chef. Apparently they change their menu every season, so we will gladly come back to try their HH menu again.
Always a favourite. The private room at the back is great for extended gatherings. Service is excellent!
Celebrated my birthday here with my husband and enjoy every bit of pur experience. From cocktails, bread service, appys, main course and dessert. My husband really enjoyed the Beets & Brews cocktail he got 2 :) Would’ve given 5 stars if there were more options for dessert that are dairy free :) but other than that everything was amazing!
Soooo yummy. 15/15 oh my god. The dessert wine was fabulous
Most dish is salty. Dessert is perfect.
Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for the amazing experience.
Expensive and small but super tasty
One of the best restaurants in Vancouver. You cannot go wrong here.
Went here for Dine Out on a week night. The food was very good, portions were appropriately sized for a high end restaurant. I was a little confused by the ambiance though. For a $$$ restaurant, I would have expected the servers to be wearing more formal style clothing instead of jeans and flannel shirts, business casual at least. Also, they were playing 90s hip hop/R&B music? I can't fault the service though, as the servers were attentive and very professional.
I've been here twice: once with just my wife, and once with my wife and kids. Each time was an absolute adventure in eating. The portions aren't big, but come prepared to eat a little of everything. Fantastic service, as well.
1000th review bois let's gooo
Great service and amazing food! Can't go wrong
I have only been here for Sunday brunch. Oh god, the food is great. They have amazing pastries as well. More importantly, the coffee is good. Give this place try.
Great food and wine
Great food and location. Staff are friendly and helpful. Food is very good and they have an excellent cocktail menu. Enjoy
A nice restaurant in Gas town, however I never get along with the name ! Hope it will be changed.
On the expensive side. Really good quality modern gastronomic dishes.
my favourite French bistro .
Original, inventive and interesting, but not generally appetizing. In general, l'Abbatoir uses bold and interesting flavours in unexpected ways but to mediocre results - it seems as if they prize making unusual food above making tasty food. I tasted the sunchoke and the octopus, neither of which was particularly appetizing. The octopus in particular seemed to be designed to accent the least appetizing qualities of octopus. Two desserts I tried were ruined by the dominance of flavours that perhaps were meant to contrast with the traditional flavours, but instead clashed. The main course (lamb) was a mix - the lamb itself was very nice, but the lamb sausage was mediocre at best - and even uninteresting.
My "go to" for special occasions. They know food, service, wine, and ambiance. They nail it every time!
Great service and food as always. Pictured: chicken confit and roasted duck
Very enjoyable dinner, good drinks, good food and an amazing dessert. The first one on the list, something terrine with apple, crumble and caramel sauce. It's divine, my favorite dessert in Vancouver for now.
Most likely one of the best meals I have had
Beautiful elegant place for either brunch or dinner. Food is delicious and comes always looking beautiful. Not the place to go for if you are really hungry, though. If you spot a little mice running around on top floor be aware you aren't the first one doing so.
It’s one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. The creations are absolutely delicious and wild. I loved every bit of it. They also make good drinks.
Fancy restaurant with great drinks on the menu.
Meal type
Great food and staff. Mix of English and French cooking.
Their $145 per person dine out menu was an exciting journey into food you may not eat often. The cod with caviar was so soft and tender, almost like toro texture. The pheasant and foie disintegrated in your mouth, who knew those weird birds were so good. The lamb rack with a sausage crust was creative and cooked perfectly. The only down side was the food was on the saltier side, a bit too much sodium. Service was attentive. If you book via Amex platinum concierge, you get free bubbly to start your meal.
Delicious food and very interesting drinks list. Good service which was friendly, efficient and professional. Nice ambience: not too noisy and not pretentious but still very cool. Highly recommended.
The best scone in town!!! Atmosphere is awesome, service is alright.
Amazing service & the food was A+
I've been here 3 times. Every time I'm here it's been a wonderful experience. I've had Kevin as our server both times and he goes above and beyond. From the food perspective, all the flavor work really well, and the ever-changing menu keeps things interesting. Entrees always delicious, but the appetizers wow me every time with his unpredictable they are. But the best is the bread. I go for the bread.
Very good food! Their food portion isn't so big for the price you pay, but we enjoyed it.
Amazing food, every dish was a treat for my taste buds.
The tasting menu was delicious! So much food, and it was an amazing variety of dishes. Such a nice touch with the cookies matching the floor at the end. The staff was so lovely as well. Well worth the price.
Meals here are fantastic, and the cocktails are amazing. The service was friendly and helpful. The bread was amazing, the morel mushrooms with the duck, made a great dish even better. The one less star is based on two factors. 1.The place was noisy, admittedly it was fine until a very noise table arrived, and it became quite unpleasant, more like a noisy pub, than fine dining. So it may be just a one off. 2.The prices are also fairly high. The quality and presentation was amazing, but price was still high. This was especially seen in the cocktail prices, at nearly $20 I would expect to get more in terms of quantity (see photos) , although quality was excellent!
Everything about the dining experience was excellent! Our waiter Frankie was very attentive and was never far away from our view. His service was impeccable, and very professional but also friendly and welcoming. Only critique I would have is the food seemed to be on the salty side as mentioned by a number of people in our party, otherwise the presentation and selection of appys and mains (while limited) seemed to be enough for us.
Great place together with friends for good strong drinks and imaginative food.
Phenomenal food and well thought out cocktails.
Classy restaurant offering signature northwest dishes. Excellent service. Great atmosphere. Lovely location in Gastown.
Finally made it in for dinner and was super happy, fabulous staff great milieu in the atrium and the best duck I've had in years
Wow! The tandoori sablefish is incredible. Everything was excellent. The service was very good. Never disappoints but last time it exceeded our expectations. Well done!
Excellent meal and service. Creativity of kitchen and bar was evident in creating a wonderful experience.
food was great in both taste and presentation. unique style from appetizers to dessert. good service also.
Excellent service, beautiful interior and ambience. It's a little on the pricier side. The food was very good, some of it could have been served a little warmer, maybe.
My spouse and I weren't impressed after having high expectations from seeing all the great reviews. The portions were tiny, service was average and we didn't love the atmosphere. Lots of other better French options in the city in our opinions.
Can never go wrong with this place, always serve the best and top quality food. Service is friendly and professional. They have the best steak Diane and duck! Super busy so make reservation.
This place was recommended by a local. We had to reserve an early table, and we felt rushed the whole time we were there, so it really put a damper on the whole experience. The staff was nice, but you could feel that they wanted to flip our table fast. We really enjoyed the food, especially the oysters. I was kinda surprised that the wine list only had a few local options, but the dessert wine list is great. So my suggestion is to avoid an early rez if you plan on taking your time.
Me and my best friend went to L'Abattoir for the evening on my birthday. The service from every single staff member was completely gorgeous! The ambiance and aesthetic were beautiful and our waitress told us to order 6 baked oysters because she she knew we would fight over the last one! Such a brilliant experience, I cannot wait to go back!
The service was impeccable, the food was incredible and the drinks were delicious. I can't think of any reason not to give it a go for a nice night out. My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary and they brought us come bubbly on the house. It started off well and never diminished. Thanks L'Abattoir :)
Went for the drinks and had a nice time at the bar. Really warm hospitality and a very fine Manhattan variation.
This place has great ambiance, loved the tiles on the ground and the upstairs dining area. I had a great dinner here though it was a bit pricey and I felt that the food was a bit too much. I would try to come back for brunch though!
Very fancy restaurant. Great environment. Price can be workable but highly recommend .
great place, atmosphere and food service was waow all was 5/5 but and only but the tall guy who welcomed us should work on his smile and attitude and should give several options where to seat
Excellent restaurant. Friendly, helpful staff. Food quality and presentation were excellent. Wine and cocktail list was extensive enough to satisfy most people. Oysters are delicious but I could pass on the lobster tartlette. Scallops with pork were also very good. The deconstructed carrot cake was fantastic and relatively light.
Service
Nice place , great service. Food though was not even average. Was it a bad luck, or chef took a day off, but the best item in our case was the bread basket. The main course came with canned chanterelles from supermarket. Well overpriced.
Everything...amazing.
Dine in
The food was ok. I didn't like one that I ordered and they refunded me for it. The price is expensive and definitely not worth the taste.
My experience here was perfect, I'm incredibly picky about steak and mine was cooked and seasoned flawlessly. The service was attentive and friendly but not overbearing. I can't wait until I have another excuse to go!
Our favorite upscale restaurant in downtown. They are super busy so make sure you always reserve to get a seat. Superb service, great food, and fantastic drink options. Upscale but won't break your bank. This is one of the few places that truly lives up to its hype.
Went there for a dinner on Feb 19. The food + cocktails were nothing short of amazing. We ordered baked oysters, salmon and steak and everything was just top notch. We were welcomed very graciously by the host. Our server seemed in a bit of a rush but she made sure we were attended properly. Would definetely visit again
Awesome brunch. Great presentation, taste and nice service.
Try the avocado mule and the baked oysters. Normally we don’t like cooked oysters but these ones are absolutely amazing.
Good cocktails. Average food for the price. The waiting area at the front door is tiny.
Wicked place to eat and have fun.
Perfect brunch spot. Relaxed atmosphere, huge pots of coffee, breakfast cocktails, a pastry basket??!
Great food and tasty cocktails
Excellent food! Some of the best food I have had in a while. Food is delicious and we found filling. We started with three appetizers and a drink and felt full after that. Until we immediately decided to order two desserts ????. Veil tartar was spectacular along with the cauliflower dish. Both desserts were amazing, one was the cotta and the other was the one that had a coffee flavor to it. Unfortunately I cannot comment on main courses as we were too full. Overall, excellenta.
Excellent food and perfect service. Wine selection is on point. I love that they offer half bottles!! Unforgettable night for me and my girl. Get a table there now! Hesitate no further!!
As a vegetarian there's not a whole lot on the menu I can eat, but the cocktails are fantastic. I go back repeatedly when waiting for restaurants in the area as there are usually spots at the bar and they have a great selection of drinks. It's a really nice space and the staff are very friendly.
I absolutely love this place, If you are looking for an atmosphere that is sexy and casual, yet business and pleasure this is it my friends A HUGE thanks to Nick and the entire team. Food5/5 Service and delivery 5/5 I recommend to all. You should not miss this spot
Great cozy, intimate restaurant. Reserved a table for 8:45 was ready five minutes after arriving. There is no designated waiting area. They give an assortment of bread before mains. The bun with bacon was great! Mains were delicious. Scallop dish was amazing, cod dish was good. For dessert I shared the chocolate cake which was superb :). Service was very attentive with drinks and checking up on meal quality along with giving a detailed explanation (Ingredients, sauce etc.) as to what you were eating before digging in. Overall really good experience
Fancy brunch with a nice atmosphere! Great area for a nice stroll before or after your meal!
I had been looking forward to this experience for years. As Dine Out Vancouver usually happens on my birthday, I don't get to enjoy nice restaurants and their full menus. With Dine Out postponed this year, I was thrilled to get a table at l'Abattoir. The first red flag appeared when I called the restaurant the day before my reservation to ask about the menu. As my daughter was looking forward to the Steak Diane, I wanted to know how it was prepared. Would it be flambéed at the table? Would it be Belgian, or Dutch, or Aussie/New York? So I called and asked if the Steak Diane was flambéed, imagining my daughter's delight as this legendary dish is prepared flaming at our table. The person who answered the phone answered, "It's not flambéed." So I asked, "What style is it prepared in?" To which this person replied indignantly, "I don't know, it's the same way it has been on our menu for ten years." Not a good sign. We arrived the next day for our reservation and decided to start with scallops and oysters. Although neither dish was what we expected - scallops were sashimi style in some kind of lardon sauce with brussel sprout leaves and what my son thankfully determined was not damsel fly larvae, but gnocchi. Sad. Soggy. Gnocchi. The oysters were butchered and baked. They weren't bad, but they weren't what we wanted. That's on us, not on L'Abattoir, but the execution of said baked oysters was underwhelming nonetheless. I have had plenty of baked oysters and these were nothing special. At this point in the meal we decided we didn't want to try our luck with the entrées. I can best describe iL'Abattoir as 'nice wedding food', but it's not a serious restaurant. At least not anymore. It's more of a tourist trap than innovative haute cuisine.
The free bread here is really tasty and unique
Service was great. Portions were small but food was good.
Dinned at various Michelin star restaurants in the UK - my expectations were high. Amazing wine list. The food was good but not outstanding.
terrible service, 1.5hrs waiting and still no entrees, never come again
Their service was extraordinary and the food was wonderful.
Good flavors and a casual atmosphere. Smaller portion size but was satisfied when I left. Appy, main and desert. Without all three you'll be hitting a fast-food joint later in the night though.
Excellent cocktails, and great happy hour.
Great spot with an awesome vibe. Awesome cocktails and great food.
Very pretentious and overpriced restaurant. The food took one hour to be served. Since I am on a low-carb diet, I asked to substitute the potatoes for vegetable but was not granted this "favor" (for a dish priced at $50).
Good restaurant. Their brunch is also great
It was good but not great. My expectations were high so it was slightly disappointing. We did the Dine Out menu and the appetizers were quite good, the mains were very small portions and although both tasted good they just didn't wow us. Dessert may have been the best, visually very well presented and very interesting tastes. The seating was very cramped and it was hard to carry on a conversation as the tables beside were so close that the other conversations blended into yours. It was a nice meal but overall only a 3.5 - 4 star dining experience.
Absolutely amazing food, presentation, service, and ambiance. The scallops were cooked to perfection with both complimentary and contrasting flavors accompanying the dish. The duck was beyond delicious also full of rich flavors and textures. The drinks were original, flavorful, and unlike in many other places, not watered down. Ordered a pumpkin tart for a comfort dessert not expecting to be surprised, but I was absolutely blown away! The tart featured a palette of cream, pumpkin puree, nuts and flowers, creatively combined into a shell of harvest-themed goodness baked to perfection. Will absolutely come back for more flavorful creations from this restaurant.
Had the steak and it was alright. The quail and foie gras was much better, including the scallops. Lovely atmosphere and excellent staff though! Thanks!
Probably one of the best meals I've had in the city.
Pricing is bit high, but great atmosphere.
The food itself was really good. We ordered a scone to start and the pork belly with eggs and the soft shell crab sandwich for brunch. However the service was poor and unengaging. Not what I would expect from a restaurant of this caliber. In general, we felt very rushed even though it wasn't that busy. My scone plate was taken away before I finished because the main came which was brought to us by someone who wasn't our waiter. He ended up mixing up our mains even though there were only two of us. Overall the service standards were poor.
Worth every single bite. The baked pacific oysters with black truffle were insane!
The dine out menu simply doesn't work. It felt like the chef decided to go mad scientist and try out whole bunch of combinations that fails to compliment with each other. Still love the place though.
attended a small wedding, great staff (esp Ashwan - give that man a raise!) and excellent food.
We went to L'Abattoir to celebrate my birthday. The place where the waiter has placed us was cold and drafty , and at my remark about it , the waiter advised that I put a coat on. The dishes were strange . My roasted pork belly with rutabaga was not what I expected. The rutabaga was leaving a strange , unpleasant taste in my mouth.I did not want to spoil the occasion and this is why I did not send the dish back. I should have. My husband's duck was bloody , tough , nearly raw with a skin that contained the undone layer of fat.It was not crisped at all. Also , the addition - the caramelized parsnip was bitter and unpleasant. My granddaughter's arctic char was just boring and bland. We are laughing that for a French , supposedly high end restaurant the only dish that was satisfying was the vegetarian dish that my daughter in law ordered. The quality of it all was overall very disappointing.
Wow! Wonderful! Got lucky as our Hotel EXchange concierge got us 830 reservations at the bar. Best seats in the house chatting with the charming bartenders through dinner. Price Fixe for Dine Out Vancouver (hence lucky to get reservations) was great. Each specialty cocktail was a treat and all three courses were delicious. Atmosphere was fun and lively. Service was friendly and knowledgeable.
Beef Tartare and House Pinot Noir
Amazing food and amazing cocktails! Yes, this place is expensive, but you get your money's worth. . . beyond the food and drinks, the ambiance and service are both stellar. This is an ideal place for an anniversary or a special date. You can also get a taste of the good life during their happy hour, from 5:30 to 6:30 at the bar. They have specials on their house red and white wine, a lager, and a rotating specialty cocktail. On top of that, all of their appetizers are half off (they're listed as "cold dishes"and "hot dishes"). The portions are small, but that's to be expected somewhere as fancy as this. We listened to the recommendations of our excellent bartender, Katie, and had the mushroom risotto, the nectarine gazpacho, the steelhead sushi roll, and the octopus--and each one was a hit! Honestly, we were thrilled with every aspect of our experience. I'll confess that as a former bartender and server I can be a little hard to impress when it comes to customer service, but Katie was definitely impressive! L'Abattoir was the culinary highlight of our week in Vancouver.
Meal type
The sablefish is best in the city . Old fashioneds are outstanding ! Dave is a great bartender, knowledgeable about both the food and drinks. I Highly recommend going to sit at his bar and enjoy some amazing food and drinks .
It’s a casual place where visitors may feel themselves comfortable no matter what they are wearing. When I was there, I saw people with suit cases, people wearing sportive clothings as well as ladies dressed like for the red carpet walk and their gentlemen dressed formal. The food there doesn’t take long to arrive; moreover, you would be served beautiful dishes which are also very gentle in their texture and tasty. As the dishes arrive, you would be amazed be the way the food is spreaded around the plate - it is very accurate and detailed work. The food easily changes the impression of the restaurant from the casual look into a luxurious place. At the end, after few drinks and amazing food, it’s totally ok to expect a $100 bill per person. I think it is worsy at the end. The service is very nice: smily, friendly and attentive to people’s food preferences and restrictions. As picky as I am, I was very satisfied.
Pleasantly surprised by this incredibly gorgeous restaurant. While they don't show gluten free options directly on the menu, the wait staff is well trained and most items can be made (or already are) gluten free. My husband says he had the best steak of his life here, while I had a pretty good duck dish. For my personal preference, the flavor wasn't quite what I was looking for, but everything else we tried was great.
Excellent food and excellent service. As one might expect, they don't have great vegetarian options but otherwise it's a fantastic spot. It's a bit on the pricey side but it's worth it.
Bit overpriced for the interior (furnishings etc) and atmosphere itself but array of complimentary app bread is a treat. Some entrées very creative The lamb was delicious. The halibut was overtly salty and not recommended.
Things couldn’t be more perfect. Our experience is remarkable—atmosphere, hand-crafted cocktails, staff that strikes the balance of elegant and relaxed. Highly recommended
Have dined here multiple times on multiple occasions and every time has been phenomenal. Sitting at the bar the bartenders are attentive and knowledgable, the dining room brings a low lit cozy atmosphere, and the atrium an open concept skylit space. The food is unbelievable, each dish with an explanation of the flavours and presentation. Wine list + cocktails are amongst the best in the city(world?) Would recommend them for any occasion, anytime!
Very disappointing. I'm not sure what it is trying to be. The kitchen staff is definitely talented, but they are trying too hard and the food suffers. Nothing we ate was exceptional, the Duck dish was the best, but the fat wasn't rendered and the skin wasn't crisp. The worst part about L'abattoir is the serving staff. It doesn't seem right to be waited on by staff in T shirts and jeans, while rap music plays on the stereo and I look over a Fine-Dining-priced menu and wine list. Make up your mind, do you want to be fine dining? Dress and act appropriately. Do you want to be a casual gastro-pub? Drop the prices and the pretentiousness. This place is only a few changes from being great, but it is currently misguided, overpriced, and lacking structure.
Great food! shoutout to my man Sube
Excellent halibut fillet and oyster appetizer. Huge wine list and good advice for navigating it. Expensive, small portions.
i was really excited to try l'abattoir after hearing all the rave reviews but i was somewhat disappointed. i was at the restaurant for the dine out menu but nothing was AMAZING - i will say that the wagyu beef tartare is quite delicious despite how it looks, but it got to be too much near the end, as there is no accompaniment to it. the quail was really salty and underwhelming, but the rum cake finished the meal off on a good note. i would recommend getting coffee or something with the cake, as it is a little sweet. service was alright but no engaging interaction - understandable as it is probably really busy.. all in all a nice meal but i'm not sure if i would be back.
This place “slays it” literally and figuratively - the service and food were excellent! One of, if not the best meals we’ve had in Vancouver! I’m not usually a fan of baked oysters but these were to die for. Take note they have an extensive amaro list.
Upscale cocktails in swanky digs. All cocktails sampled did not disappoint. Fashionista & funky folk flock here. Front bar is tiny so expect to stand if the 8 seats are full. Larger dining space upstairs.
Best restaurant in Vancouver? Well, pretty darn close! A MUST visit and I'm sure you will agree. Food and service always spot on!
Terrific food, great service. Understated fine cuisine
Fun spot, chique atmosphere, nice food and fantastic cocktails
Had high expectations but was let down. Meal was expensive and lacked flavour. Atmosphere was classy but stuffy. Probably would not go back
Undoubtedly the best meal of my life so far. Beautifully plated and impeccably seasoned food, excellent wine list, attentive and friendly staff and a top notch atmosphere. A must try for those who appreciate well made food.
Service
Hands down one of my favourite French bistro restaurants. The baked oysters and fois gras were everything... also their mini ice cream desserts! I recommend the white chocolate earl grey - you can really taste the tea flavour.
Solid modern French cuisine, I have been in the past, it is nothing like it once was but still worth a visit. One of the best service staffs in the city you will feel taken care of which is all you can ask for.
The food here is amazing! Every part of every dish is so flavourful! It is on the pricier side but if you're looking for a venue to celebrate - this is the place.
This restaurant has the most exotic and creative list of cocktails. Love this place
IMHO I think the taste is so so. I believe any ingredient on the plate needs to bring something to the dish such as texture, flavor, or visual. In term of overall visual, the plating were up there no doubt. However, taste wise, the flavor profile is really bland. For example the flavor profile of the pork chop is salt. By paring with salty mushroom, raw spinach, and unseasoned fried sage, the profile of the dish remains unchanged. The ingredients don’t compliment each other. Maybe adding a reduced sauce might help. Maybe I’m just being skeptical. Overall worth a visit and decide on your own. Friendly service and tables on upstairs are tad too close
Great food, great service. Will go back.
Upscale establishment downtown to get some good food and specialty drinks. We stopped by for a quick drink and ended up staying for a few. We tried sweetbreads for the first time here and they were surprising very delicate and tasty. Cocktails were well made and unique. We had the smoked shandy, Brazilian Boulevardier, Avocado gimlet, dirty martini and a tequila flight.
Amazing spot, well deserved 4.6 stars review!! Food is incredible and the service impeccable ! Must go!!!
The tasting menu was so good! Highly recommend.
Amazing food and paring of drinks. This has got to be the best food experience I've ever had
My husband and I came here on Saturday, the day before Valentines day to try it out for the first time! We ordered the baked oysters on recommendation, along with the scallops, steak diane (on recommendation) and the sablefish and there wasn't a bite wasted! Everything was so amazing, incredible food, fun and informative service. Delicious wine and beautiful selection. 10/10 on all fronts, we will be back! I can't believe I've waited this long to come. Originally I thought I'd prefer to sit in the atrium, but we ended up seated in the upstairs area and it was so cozy and beautiful, would love to sit there again. Ambiance, food, service, selection, quality, all on point. Pricey but WORTH it.
Went for brunch really loved the scone and the salmon tartine. Service was excellent as well.
Open for Covid-19 take-home! The weeks ago we ordered the Duck Wellington dinner from these guys and it was seriously mind-blowing. We are so happy we can support these guys during this isolation, and so happy we can enjoy their amazing food! Just look at the pictures, because wow.
Good fancy food and private room is great for special events.
Had the private room previously and didn't have a great experience, likely due to the large party and inability to maintain a level of quality. Went to visit this place this evening and our level of expectations were blown away. Baked oysters with truffle were solid, foie grad was flavourful, and the experience at the bar was ????. Surpassed our expectation in terms of food and service, highly recommended!!
Fine dining restaurant with good food and attractive staff. I'd definitely eat here again.
Nice food and service. I especially enjoyed the cocktails.
An exquisite feast of flavours, incredible ingredients, and drink mixology that tickles every tastebud. L'Abattoir is staffed by gracious hosts, the setting has an elegant charm, and the settings are homely but elegant. A great place for a romantic feast; dish after dish to talk about, share around, and explore. Every ingredient is with quality and individually flavoured to bring out both the natural taste and compliment the spice/sauce and dish as a whole. And of course, presentation is elegant and laid out to enjoy both the individual pieces and combined to be enjoyed as a whole. Thank you for both a simple and elegant experience that made for an evening to be cherished.
Visited L’Abattoir for a private Christmas party and was pleasantly surprised by the private back room located down the alley. The food was great and so was the selection of cocktails. Would highly recommend for company gatherings.
We wanted to go out for a birthday dinner during dineout 2020. The internet reservations were full but the staff helped us get a table on our preferred night with short notice. We really appreciated the extra service to fit us in. Dinner was great as well. Oh those desserts... Thanks!
Incredible food. Professional service. Great wine list. Cozy atmosphere. Above and beyond in every category. The chefs definitely put their heart and soul into their dishes. I've only been there for the dine-out menu, but will be coming back to try the regular ala carte menu. Best restaurant in Vancouver for a fine dining experience imho. There is a reason it is rated one of the top restaurants in Canada!
Had a nice dinner in their event facility (next to the restaurant). Great food and service
Gorgeous restaurant with casual vibes. One of the best restaurants in the country the cooking is very refined, elegant plating one of the best meals of my life was in L’abattoir
My wife and I had our anniversary dinner here and it was spectacular. The food & service we outstanding. We had the Gaoler’s Mews menu (pronounced Jailers Mews) First off our server Andrew was amazing. His knowledge of the food and also wine pairings made it a spectacular event. The balance of the food was on point. Many times while doing tasting menus at other restaurants your left hungry at the end of the night, this was not the case, the rich and delicious French influence with Pacific Northwest ingredients made sure that we were fully satisfied. Thank you L’Abattoir you made our anniversary one we will never forget.
Great brunch here, though it gets busy in the summer weekends. Cocktails are A+, and the clotted cream scone is a must-share. Small, carefully crafted plates with perfectly balanced flavors & textures.
Great service, unique foods but caution - small portions so don't go if you're real hungry.
Excellent food and service but it was way to noisy for dinner. Four of us were there tonight (Friday) and were seated on the upper floor. Although only half of the tables were seated with customers but it was already very noisy. The tables were placed quite close to each other. When the servers walked pass between tables behind my chair, they had to squeeze a bit and hit my chair a few times. The surrounding brick walls and low ceiling probably were part of the cause of the noise. At around 7:30pm when the whole floor was full, the noise was just unbearable. We had to shout to each other but still could not hear my friends, who sat right beside me. On the food quality, we ordered two appetizers, both were tasty although the sauce in Sunchoke au gratin was too salty. Main course were excellent. We ordered fishes, steak and duck. It was such a pity that with the good quality of food, we had to leave immediately after main course without coffee or dessert due to the extreme noise. I don’t think we will ever go back to this restaurant again.
The food in the private dining area was superb!
It was delicious!
We had brunch here, the coffee and the raspberry donuts was delicious . The main dishes were really good but they weren’t great as the portions were pretty small. I would visit again for dinner ????.
As a fat American and avid steak lover, I can't forget that the best steak I ever had before coming to this place was in Napa, Ca. That was until today when I had the steak at L'Abattoir.... I didn't expect it to be so tender and tasty. I came into this place thinking it was just another hip and chic place with higher than normal prices for standard food. I couldn't believe what had just happened when I finished my steak. It was kinda like when you go home with the ugly or heavy chick at closing time from a bar cause you didn't score with the good looking chicks and the 4-rated girl (out of 10) screws the life out of you and leaves you speechless..
Great food with a wonderful atmosphere, though those unfamiliar with the area might want to watch where they tread when finding the restaurant. The stand out among the starters was the albacore confit, which had a rich tapestry of flavours. My main, pork cooked in milk, had a similar diversity that produced deliciously complex mouthfuls. This was all topped off by an earl grey pot de creme, which was a decidedly pleasant experience, although I must admit that I have always had a penchant for bergamot. Having run the gamut of superlatives I can firmly recommend L'abattoir to those looking for an intimate experience with excellent vittles.
Gorgeous food: beautiful presentation with amazing flavor! Ordered foie gras as appetizer and antic char as main. The foie gras was so smooth while the fish was very tender. Would go there again.
Went there for some cocktails at the bar! Service was a bit slow, the bartender wasn’t as attentive as we would have liked, but great ambiance overall. Would recommend to anyone.
Dine in
If you like trendy, with the thimble sized servings disquised as art, this is the place. Taste of the offerings was not notable, and perhaps a bit bland. The service was 'overplayed' - I'm not comfortable when servers play a role, rather than being genuine or 'real' in how the treat you or communicate. Oh well, there were obviously many others who don't agree, as the place filled up quickly.
Great wine, great food, great cocktails, great service. And I was just walking by. Treat yourself.
I recently had my wedding held in the private room there, which by the way, is gorgeous and so intimate! Thank you to LAINEY for being such a pleasure to work with. Very responsive and helped me navigate the whole process. She made things so easy and stress free for us! The food was unreal, and I thank you for being able to create vegetarian options for myself and a few other wedding guests. The staff the night of the wedding were amazing and so attentive party. I would highly recommend L'abattoir for dinner or for a private event. Thanks again Lainey!
Nice Place to enjoy your time with the important one.
Everything was good. The passion fruit ganache was the best dish at the restaurant for Dineout Vancouver 2019.
Food and service were great.
We dined in post-COVID restriction lifting and had cocktails and a meal that were both inventive and delicious. I’d really recommend having the trout. That said, we noticed that one of the shrimps in the trout main was still raw and pointed this out to the bus person who collected the dish. It seemed our server was not notified of the issue and they did not acknowledge the issue in any way. All in all it was a great meal, but I do hope both front and back of house could be notified of this sort of thing when it happens.
Visited during dine out 2018 in late January. The food was good but not great. The most annoying thing was the small portion size. After three courses, still felt hungry and needed to have a second dinner somewhere else. If they had made the portions just a little bit better then this place would be five stars.
Ordered the mother's day brunch it was absolutely delicious.
Love the atmosphere and foods. We there for dinner, wasn't aware they offer Happy Hour. The host told us it filled up in second.
Great gastropub for artistic food. Extensive alcohol selection, definitely recommended for a unique night out experience!
Excellent service, or server was great at helping with the menu and making sense of how to serve what we ordered (timing). Food is very good, but on par with similar options in Vancouver. Atmosphere is also really great.
Great food and really helpful service. Decor is nice too.
To say going to this place was an experience is not doing it justice. Possibly some of the most incredible dishes that is put together like a painting. Elegant, delicious with great wine options. This is a place you go for a very special occasion. The octopus dish was probably the best octopus dish I've had ever.
Some of the best cocktails in Vancouver. Pricey for the portion size but it's great food.
Great weekend brunch. The food is nut free, even the pastries!
I have only attended one brunch there and was expecting a wow factor.. I was not wowed, but will try then for dinner and see if they can inspire and impress my palate
Had the brunch burger it was excellent I will go again.
Stunning layout and interior, top notch food and cocktails to dream about.
Good food. Great drinks. Slow service could have been the day. Expect to watch people Instagram food.
Nice but expensive French themed restaurant. Our group of 3 came to $150 with 1 drink each. The drinks were fantastic though and the avacado cocktail is a must try.
The bread is sooooo gooood. Service is great and the pork chop is amazing. Highly recommend.
Amazing food, looked beautiful and had a really unique combination of food. Every type of meat I could think of was on the menu. Had the duck, was cooked perfectly and honestly didn’t need an appetizer. Little pricy, but worth it.
Really liked the atmosphere, service wasn't very great maybe it's just the lady we had as our server. Didn't smile much and wasnt very friendly at all. Went with 11 people for dinner and 9 of us all enjoyed our food while the two waited for their akwardly. Told the server that theyve been waiting for at least 30 mins more than the rest of us, but she didnt even say sorry and was being quite rude about it saying that it hasnt been 30 mins yet. We all ordered at the same time, why the wait? Especially since he was the birthday boy and we were almost finished with our dinner. Also when it was time for us to pay, some of us had already paid but when we asked if the tip was included, she said it should have been and started to panic. Its not like we werent going to pay tip anyways. If it werent the server, we would have had a better time and the food would have tasted better. As for the food, it tasted delicious. For me, I ordered the steak but there wasnt anything special about it but I tried the lamb saddle and it was amazing. Same with their scallop appetizer and the duck! It is a bit pricey but good atmosphere and fine dining. I wish we had a better server :)
Unimpressed with this restaurant that basically tries to hard and charges too much. Dinner was unexceptional, similar to the keg.
Disappointing. Boring. I thought this was a relatively upscale dining scene. Guy next to me was wearing flannel. There seemed to be no care in the service either. Over hyped and won’t return.
Dinner
Great place; delicious food and great cocktails :)
Excellent food, I had the duck and was perfectly cooked. Excellent service, the server had great suggestions about the wine and told us also interesting information about the wineries. Amazing atmosphere, perfect place for a romantic dinner!
Best service and brunch in town. Make sure to order the scone
Great service but the food wasn't my type. It was too greasy and salty. The staff was professional and the atmosphere was good
The dining experience was excellent. The staff is attentive and pleasant. The atmosphere feels casual and up scale at the same time. The portions are small but very satisfying. I recommend the lemon merrange pie for dessert. The flavours were subtle and delicious. I enjoyed my wine selection. My meal was exceptionally prepared. The pace of service was perfect, neither rushed nor slow. Overall an excellent evening.
This spot is worth trying. They have large portions for fair rates. Regularly neat and with awesome ambience. Will come visit again.
Booked the table via open table and arrived on time. The reception showed us to the table and another waitress immediately attended for drinks... We then waited for another 20 minutes to order because the table next to us was 8 persons and had just finished their appetizers and another table was just seated. The plating for appetizers, bake oysters and scallops, are amazing. Just the hollandaise sauce was too sour and overwhelmed the oysters. Scallops are sear perfectly and the garnish included white asaparagus and funnel were perfect. Then we waited.for 40 minutes and asked for dessert menu before our main courses ready. The waitress then finally found our main dishes were not there and checked with the kitchen where our orders were omitted.... For courtesy, they topped up our drinks and offered free dessert. So we waited for total 60 minutes for the main dishes. The duck is truly impressive as it was tender and great in taste. The dessert took another 20 minutes to come. Buckwheat crêpe cake was saved by the burnt sugar level and the chocolate garnache is just fair but the two sauces made it great. ************** On Sunday 7 July, I gave another try. It disappointed me again as they failed to go easy on the requirements on no/low salt in our face.... they put extra salt on the food goi terrain! The duck breast is deadly overcooked for two times! Two times! We couldn't get more disappointed that it seems both the kitchen and the services failed..
The best buttery pastries!
Great service. Food was very good. Pricey, but worth while.
Went there for dessert. The lime posset is really good!
Love the service and ambience! The bread serving is unique too!
Nice food and service. I especially enjoyed the cocktails.
Excellent French food! A little bit on the pricey side but worth a visit. Great wine selection. You can enjoy culinary delight in a relaxed casual atmosphere. Intimate setting with dimly lit candles. Recommend for date nights.
Ambience was very nice. The perfect gastown vibe. Food was foood but nothing too special
One of the restaurants I adore every single item on the menu. Top quality food and great wine lists. The place is so cozy and nice.
One of my top favourite dining spots in Vancouver, where every dish and every detail is impeccabley delicious. Right down to their bread basket.
good food. Very lame though that they dont allow balloons in their restaurant for celebrations! Just FYI lol...
Was brought here as a surprise and the food and service were excellent. They change their menu regularly, so what my date saw on the website had changed, so with my food allergies, I couldn't eat anything on their current menu. Our server (and chef) were fantastic...and did up a vegetarian main for me....and it was fantastic! The wine pairing was also spot on! Thank you to all the staff at L'Abattoir...couldn't ask for better service!
My wife and I had dinner there and although the dinner was ok the portions were tiny.. We order the brisket appy which wasn't even one ounce of meat for $20 . Then the dinner steak Diane arrived and that was $44 for 3 ounces of steak...wow. The dinner was so small we could only look at each other and wonder how they can serve such micro portions ... We left the restaurant hungry!!
Delicious high quality fine dining. The food and service are both excellent. The food is exquisite but portions can be small and pricing is high-end. So, If you're looking for a value, this might not be the best fit for you.
Consistently one of the best places in the city. Amazing food, wonderful venue, and the staff are great. Great place for an exceptional night.
I've been in many restaurants in my life and this one is definitely one of the 3 best I ever been to. The food was breathtaking, the service was more than perfect. You absolutely have to go there at least once in your life. The whole team is amazing thanks to all of them.
The best French food I know of in Vancouver. It is authentic and unpretentious. The wine selection is very good.
Best pork chop I have ever had
the best place in Gastown I love the happy hour at the bar to try all delicious things
Food and service was good but...when food cost control goes to extreme it is no fun. The drinks were crazy expensive for mediocre quality and portions were rediculousle small. For example the rum cake desert was 3 dice size pieces with a total of 1/2 a plum on top...come on. I would go elsewhere.
Had our wedding in the private dining room. The coordinators we worked with to plan our event were absolutely incredible. They were so easy to communicate with and responded back to all of our requests so quickly. The day of our wedding was seamless and the food was phenomenal. We have also had their brunch before, which is something you can't miss.
Amazing food. Great service. Friendly staff. Beautiful setup. A little on the pricy side but great for date night or special occasions.
Amazing place. Food and cocktails worth every penny!
I had the rabbit, I left hungrier than when I walked in. Very disappointing portion size.
Exceptional food and cocktails with an emphasis on service and an menu and atmosphere without pretentiousness.
Best wagyu paté i have ever had, and their twists on classic french dining (using a toasted quinoa topper instead of crisps for the crunch), while unconventional, was still enjoyable.
When we first get there everything seems ok untill I started to tell waitress that I have dairy allergy, she went back to kitchen and told me I can only have Steak out of 6-7main courses they have. Which I told her that I dont want to get steak, and giving me 1 option because I have dairy allergy isn't fair, it just sound like they were trying to punish me, not try to accommodate guest. If you have allergy I wouldn't go to this restaurant. It just seems like they dont want you to be here. Now days there are lots of people who have allergies, I think if you are upscale Restaurant you should be able to accommodate all guest with any allergies. I have never experienced this before and was upset. We got our main course out of 11 people 4 main was out first and after 5 minutes later another 4 came and last 2 didnt came till 10minute later, I have no clue what took so long, so we asked waitress she told us that "it didnt take that long", We were pretty shocked that she said that although because it was birthday party for my friend we try to stay cool and happy since we got invited. But I would go there with this kind of service at this price. I can find many better place in Downtown Vancouver to pay this price.
Exceptionally good upscale food in a semi casual setting. Always get dessert or you'll regret it.
Good but pricey. Halibut was a bit overcooked.
The food is always done to the finest details of flavor and the atmosphere excellent. I'm never disappointed.
EDIT: I went back and everything was spot on. I tried the veal shortbreads to start - I thought that the bread was soggy but then also too chewy. The veal, however, was excellent - I would order that as a main if I could. Then I had the steak Diane. This time my food was served warm and the flavours were very good. I'm not typically a fan of smoky meats or potatoes but this was more subtle and worked really well. I would give l'abbatoir one more chance, perhaps at brunch next time. I found my lamb was served cold, the plating was messy and made it challenging to get a decent bite with cohesive flavours. The lamb sausage was simply gross. Although the service and ambiance is nice, I don't see why this is rated one of Vancouver's top restaurants - especially since I ordered one of the more pricey dishes and was unsatisfied with the result. Perhaps I'll update this review with a second visit, but for now 3/5.
Impeccable service and food. Our server was warm and attentive. He also anticipated our needs. I would highly recommend the lobster tail and the seared scallops.
Went there for the dine out. Bread was the best. Small portion of food but very consistent taste. Great cocktail! Desserts were too sour overall.
Beautifully plated and great quality food, service is top notch
The team and the management aim for excellence and going above and beyond - and they delivered just that! Thank you for an amazing time! The 9 course meal is a must ...
Food was ok, not worth the money. Service was rushed. Wrong meal served but not charged.
Non-pompous atmosphere with excellent service and food. The foie-gras and the pork tenderloin is heavenly.
Dinner
Spent the day in Gastown and had an amazing brunch here. Good and staff were superb. One of our favorite restaurants on this vacation.
Staff were really great, super pleasant and attentive. Think service staff could up their game by dressing a little more professionally.. Raspberry Lemonade was lovely. Food was beautifully presented but taste wise very average. Glad we tried it but would not be on my list of places to recommend to friends
Pricey but absolutely worth it. The foie gras appetizer was stunning and the steak Diane was one of the most tender pieces of meat I've ever had. Sit in the downstairs atrium if you have an option - really airy and nice.
Very friendly and attentive service. Brunch was different
My husband and I were there for our first anniversary, and it was honestly one of the best. Extraordinary food, beautiful presentation, and exceptional service!
Got good quality of food & lovely decorations, nice features, and good service!
Love this place. Good service, good food. Very creative. They don’t serve nuts so if you have nuts allergy, perfect place to go.
The ambience was classy and the food was fantastic.
Amazing, service and food was perfection. The complimentary bread is worth going in for itself. We ordered a 3 course meal from the menu and each plate was beautiful to every detail.
Great food, but their customer service wasn't very professional.
Had a very good experience here. Our waitress was attentive and quick, everything went smoothly. Food was excellent! Recommended wine was spot on. Although pricey but well worth it.
Cool atmosphere. Ordered the barbeque octopus, was a little underwhelming. Cocktails and service were great though!
Amazing food, and service is great. The portion is small, but worth it. Will definitely recommend to everyone.
mmmmmmmmmm!!!! tastiest crabby patty !!! watchout spongebob!! mmmmmmmm!!! full breakfast is MEATY
Was overall very good, the duck was slightly cold. But other than that everything was great, the ambiance was amazing
Spectacular all round. Food was creative, skillful and beautiful - delicious. Service was warm and attentive. Lovely atmosphere. Menu was a tad unclear - especially the cocktails. However, the lack of clarity does result in delightful surprise when it reaches your table.
Great venue with amazing food and incredibly attentive service.
Amazing dinner. Great service, can't ask for more really!
Inviting space, warm exposed brick, beautiful retro floor tiles all in keeping with Gastown’s historic vibe. Meals were presented beautifully. All of the food ordered was delicious and obviously made with great attention to detail. Lovely spot to have a special meal.
Had an amazing experience 2 years ago when I came here. Was blown away by the food and the desert and the amazing service. Came for my birthday in January and it happened to be during dine out Vancouver, however the food was so so, the service wasn’t that great, felt very rushed, there was a mess up on one of our food items which was corrected, however overall just didn’t feel like the first time we came.
The duck was absolutely delightful. The scallop appetizer was delicious as well. We found the fish was so so. The dessert was too sweet. The service was good but overall atmosphere and decor does not match the high price point.
Great food tonight, and a beautiful restaurant.
It's a very cool place in gastown. This was my first time here with a group of 10 friends. We booked in advance for brunch and they were all organized and ready for us. The service is amazing, quick and very professional. The brunch menu seemed interesting and the food surprised us to be even more interesting. We were being seated in the solarium, it was bright and well decorated. When the beautiful sun finally came out it made our experience more enjoyable. The only down side that all of us agreed on is the food was a bit too salty.
Great meal great service
The food at l'ab is among the best in the city. Steak Diane is straight up classic. My favorite though is the bar. Super knowledgeable and skilled bartenders take great care of you and the cocktails are amazing. This is a great place to take a date, to hang w/ a friend, or impress a client.
Fine dining food with casual dress / atmosphere. Fantastic French food and great non-stuffy servers.
Perfect! Music was a bit loud but the beats were good.
casual fine dining with a pleasant atmosphere. french cuisine means small portions, but very flavorful. i recommend ordering the meat dishes.
L'Abattoir was surprising. On the one hand, the food is top tier, polished, consistent and precise. The chef's creations were better than one can expect, as the menu is superior, and the food is the right balance of seasoned, rich, and refined. Nothing was over the top rich, which is hard to manage in French cuisine. On the other hand, the cocktails were delicious, but overpriced. Little justifies the expensive list, as the ingredients are normal and sold elsewhere for $5-$10 less. I believe if the drinks were a realistic price, many more would be enjoyed. For this reason, I have to give the restaurant as a whole a 4/5. The food is 5/5, drinks a 3/5.
Amazing! A great date spot to check out.
I've tried L'Abattoir three times now. Once from an invitation, a second chance on a friend's recommendation and a third time to confirm. Parts of L'Abattoir are well done and worth it, but the majority of it strikes me as overrated. The positives include the cocktails, the wine list, the bread offering and the Steak Diane. The steak alone would be enough for me to consider joining friends here again. What I found underwhelming was that many of the other dishes I tasted had flavours that blurred together rather than complimenting one another. For the most part, the food has been well prepared although my first visit was off enough that I was hesitant to return. While it has its silver lining, my experiences here have rarely left a lasting impression that is expected from a restaurant of this calibre. Also, I understand the name may imply a meat focus, but the lack of vegetables is still surprising. Despite feeling rushed while dining here, the staff are attentive and polite.
Never disappoints. Top 5 restaurants in Vancouver easy.
Very well done. Tasty and imaginative menu.
Love the interior, service was good too. Food was average.
Overrated. Food was decent but I guess I expected more since this was suppose to be top 5 in Vancouver. Venue was great, but the selection didn't even have a vegan or vegetarian option, and I felt some dishes were under developed.
Excellent dinner at this fantastic Gastown restaurant. Loved the Tandoori Sablefish.
Love.
Nice restaurant. Staffs are super friendly. Great service A++. There a few items on the menu that are delicious such as baked oysters. I personally think this place is super pricey for their main course quality. With an Avg $46 per dish there are much better places in Vancouver. We tried the duck and the Sable Fish they were mediocre.
Attended a wedding reception here. Even with a large crowd, service and food was great. The beef was among the best I have eaten
Went here for the first time on Saturday after being recommended by a friend. Started the meal by sharing the featured foie gras and the steak dian and duck for our mains. The food while being delicious, came second to the service that we received by Andrew. Paired with an amazing wine selection I cannot recommend enough!
I've had excellent meals at L'Abbatoir in the past. The portions were acceptable and the quality was exceptional. But that seems to have changed. My most recent experience at this Gastown eatery was disappointing on all accounts. The portions were barely larger than an amuse-bouche, with the flavours tending toward the heavy handed. With the exception of the beef tartar first course, the dishes were simplistic and without much contrast, hardly worth the hefty price tag. Next time I'll choose something with less hype and more genuine quality.
Fantastic cocktails in an great space with excellent bartenders. Looking forward to trying the food.
My favorite restaurant. Their food is always so delicious.
Creative and beautiful dishes, best enjoyed as shared plates
Amazing food, great ambiance. A fine dining spot that's also family friendly.
Unpretentious fine dining can sometimes be a difficult thing to find, but L'Abattoir does it brilliantly! I've been here over a dozen times over the past 5 years and I've never had a bad experience. Cocktails/mocktails are expertly crafted Appetizers are small, but generous (Scallops are the clear winner for me) Mains will leave you satisfied (Steak Diane or the duck) Dessert changes regularly and at the very least, will be a conversation piece. Service is attentive and kind. Great pick for any occasion!
Been a couple times and always great! we had a great romantic dinner and they excelled in every way: food, service, drinks and ambiance
Vancouver modern cuisine at its best. A bread basket with a mix of different breads such as bacon Brioche set the tone to a wonderful evening The cocktails were delicious, octopus starter was tender and the pork shoulder in milk was perfectly braised. Found the dessert slightly too sweet. Overall, great dining experience and great service!
This is the second time I've been to labbatoir and both times they forgot our order. To be fair, the food taste good and the atmosphere is superb. The waiter last time apologized profusely and we understand that things happen, we let it go and decided to come back a second time. When we arrived at the restaurant thete were only 3 tables sitting upstairs. We ordered our food and drinks and off we went having a good chat. About 25 mins in, we realized that even the people that arrived after us had their good but us. So we asked our waitress Amanda W to check on our food. She came back and said that the kitchen is "working on an order and will be working on ours right after." There was no explanation or anything... If she had said she forgot or the kitchen mixed up the order and apologized I would've understood. She really could've handled this situation better. If she is new, then she should've asked for help on how to deal with situations like this. This is the 2nd time they did this, it makes me wonder if it's because we're Chinese. We are born and raised here in Vancouver, I pay tax and vote just like any other citizen. I don't believe we deserve this kind of scrutiny at this restaurant. I personally will not return to this restaurant again, there's lots of other brunch places in Vancouver that will value our business.
Went there a number of years ago to celebrate my birthday with my then fiance. Great meal, nice selection of craft beers. P.S. she's now my wife!
Top drawer brunch. Let me come back for dinner
Amazing spot! Love the historic building that has been redone. Butcher block tables and exposed brick. Large windows. The space is very nice. The food was excellent. I had the butter poached cod with polenta fries. It was excellent. For starters we shared the oysters, beet carpaccio, and trout...all tasty and good for sharing. All the food was delicious! Finished with coffee and the chocolate torte. Rich and delicious! The wine and cocktails were delicious. Recommendations were great for our food.
Overall Food: 5 Service: 4 Ambiance: 5 Value: 4 Recommend or Repeat: Y
Excellent food and the atmosphere hits a perfect note between fancy and casual.
An amazing restaurant, it's not just a diner, it's an experience
This place isn't inexpensive but the food is amazing and the service is good.
Exceptional food, service and ambience. In our booking, we asked to be seated in a quieter area of the restaurant, and they seated us in a comfortable little nook. The baked oysters were absolutely amazing. We dont usually like cooked oysters, but these were mind-blowing. The duck was tender and tasty, with a perfectly crisp skin and melt-in-your-mouth fat. The cocoa coffee crusted venison had robust yet balanced flavours, pairing nicely with the tartness of the cherry. The lime bavarois was beautifully presented and was easily one of the best desserts we've ever eaten. The citrus flavours were delicate and refreshing, and went well with the earthiness of the basil oil and microgreen garnishes. Thank you so much for such a wonderful experience, we can't wait to return!
Nice restaurant in gastown the back dining room is amazing!
Hands down one of the best dinners I've ever had, and worth every penny. My wife and I celebrated my 30th birthday with a dinner at L'Abbotoir, and I couldn't be happier with that decision. The food, the wine list, and especially the service were all second to none.
Was there for a media event. I had no idea it even existed but now I must take the husband back! Such amazing hospitality. Food was incredible!
Pretty cozy and fashionable interior. Foods are presented beautifully and the cocktails were great, portion wise it’s a bit small but it’s French restaurant, what can you blame? The only thing was not perfect was my cod fish was a bit salty with the bacon wrapped. In general, a great place to go
Had a great time here, great food, wine and drinks! Relaxed atmosphere - never felt like they were waiting to sit the next table
Great experience. Nic treated us exceptionally. Highly recommend.
Everything was "good": the service was "good", the place looked "good, the food was "good". Nothing caught my attention enough for me to go back.
Great ambiance and service. I had the Wagyu Tartare which was definitely good but not out of this world. Also found it a bit on the pricier side.
Great good, ambience and service. Beautiful Gastown location.
Excellent service, roast lamb was delicious!
Expensive but the cod dish was well worth it
Service
Best french cuisine in Vancouver. Amazing ambiance and great food!
Great food and concept. A small but well executed menu in a gorgeous space in gastown.
Beautiful presentations of dishes, is like a piece of art. Food is great and service is excellent. The environment feels cold though. I would come back.
Yum!
Great food, excellent service, bring your credit card because you will need it
I love this place! They provide delicious dishes, they have a rich menu, The chef in that place is an expert, I love a lot trying all their dishes. The dishes are always of high class, the service towards the visitors is helpful. I visit often this place and I was never unhappy. I recommend it with no hesitation.
Hubby and I came here while we were visiting Vancouver for a nice dinner for our anniversary, and we were NOT disappointed! Beautiful space, amazing service, amazing drinks, unbelievable food. We will be back next time we visit!
Unique dining experience. Food and service was exceptional. Try the oysters to start.
I've had several great meals here, and each time I looked over at other people's plates and was excited to come back and try what they had next. The bartender is great and I highly suggest just telling him to "surprise you"
My friends and I came here for brunch...it's a nice space, especially in the back where the glass lets in lots of light. I had the English breakfast (delicious) and a Hendricks and tonic.. i would love to return for dinner...alas, that will have to wait until I can return to Vancouver.
Great food. Average service. Ordered mimosas for $10 each and got a glass 2/3 full. 4 stars for food and ambience
Absolutely a unique and fantastic place for fine dining with special menu. Everything about this place is absolutely professional. I loved it.
Service: 10/10!!!! Yes, Quick to cater, friendly etc. But that level of professionalism & ownership can be cut with a knife. Absolutely on point.Drinks: 10/10!!!! Amazing bartenders who showcase a passion for their creative elixirs that puts many to shame with their alcoholic fruit punches that's an excuse of a cocktail.
The food and service here were superb! Yes, we did spend $100 per person, but our dining experience was unforgettable. Everything was perfect, from the appetizers to the desserts. Now, we know why it's highly recommended.
Amazing food. Great service
Very nice interior so I gave it a try with my wife. It's was cozy and relaxing. The Food is pretty good but since the portions were on the smaller side, we left not being fully satisfied. However they still get 4 stars because of quality and service.
Love everything about L'Abattoir -from costumer service, to food and the ambience! It's one of the best "fine dine-in" in VanCity. Food is a bit pricey but it's all worth it especially if you're being treated as VIP! I highly recommend to everyone. You should check it out!!! :)
Excellent service, excellent food, excellent drinks and excellent atmosphere!! Most expensive meal I’ve ever had but well worth it for our honeymoon! …
Go here every time I can when visiting from Victoria. This little gem in Gastown, Vancouver has beautifully crafted drinks and a creative dinner menu. Everything is really good in quality. Yes, this place is expensive, but it's totally worth going every time I visit. The menu changes quite frequently. Nice urban-rustic-chic atmosphere.
7 course meal. Fantastic, but i should have avoided eating the entire day - given the tremendous volume of food
Great food, the lemon meringue dessert being the highlight. Our server Natalie was amazing! Decor and overall vibe was way more played back then I had anticipated.
Took my parents out for Mother/Father's Day, gave them a list of choices, and they picked L'abattoir. It rates well, so can't be that bad? In all honesty, it's not that good either. Service was fine, except I couldn't figure out who the hostess and the staff were with the casual attire. The interior was interesting, but plastic chairs and dirty tables cheapened the experience. Drinks were well loved, but no one liked their dinner. (All: Small, not colorful, ugly plating, lacking in vegetables/carbs depending which were all variations of meat on a mash. Cod: Very salty. Pork: Regrettable. Lamb: Chewy, hard to cut.) Parents were disappointed that there were no starter salads or soups. Bill came out over $250, and I was choked. I still tip at 18% anyway to save face. Why didn't I just go to Le Crocodile?
3.5 stars You can tell they put a lot of effort into the dishes. There is very little fillers like flour or cornstarch so you are getting the pure flavours. Although the flavours were great, some flavours masked the taste of others. For example, the white chocolate mousse tastes more like nutmeg and spices. The real star was the cocktail. I got the earl grey martini. It was cold and frothy. It's blend a blend of lavender, citrus, and earl grey. The lavender overpowers the earl grey but it was amazing. It's not in the regular menu but they were happy to make it. The portions are small but you come here for the flavours. I would recommend just the bar
Beautiful experience!
Great ambiance and food was amazing. Loved the history and story of the restaurant.
Beautiful place for brunch, lunch and dinner :) Atmosphere is wonderful, staff is all soooooo very nice......try the Avocado Gimlet, Jason makes the best one!
Great service, friendly staff, excellent cocktails.
Many restaurants may have good meals but when it comes to desserts, some are disappointing.....but not L'Abattoir.
Really nice wine list. The cocktails are really nice, taste original but tasty. Friendly staff. For the main course I took the octopus and was really dispointed actually. The octopus it self was not bad, just all the vegetables serounding was horrible. Really strange taste. Finally, for the desert, that was the worst ever, this restaurant is said to be french like cuisine. Well, it's not, I took the rhubard roulade and I really couldn't find the rhubard taste. I think that this restaurant tries to make french cuisine by mixing everything together making a beautiful plate. But the problem is that it's original but where is the taste? For 55 dollars, I'm really disapointed… Never come again.
Great location and ambiance. The food is great and service is spectacular. However the pricing is slightly high. Definitely a meal for your taste buds and not your stomach as the portions are smaller. Quality over quantity.
5 oyster appy, incredible. Great service and hospitality.
This is a super cozy place with a nice view out to Gastown. The service was great and the interior is quite nice. However, I probably wont be coming back here. The portions are very small (I ended up having to go pick up snacks from the grocery store after dinner, despite getting appies and a desert). The prices are very high. A dinner for 4 cost us over $300 after tips. The food quality was very good -- the ingredients were very fresh and tasty, but I just didn't enjoy the dishes at all. The menu choices are almost entirely all fish, and they were all quite mediocre. I can see why people like this place but I didn't find the value doesn't match the price here. There are better options in Vancouver I feel.
This is my favorite restaurant in Vancouver! They have tasty cocktails and incredible dishes.
Wonderful food and service. Best oysters we've ever had!
Best in town...you love food perfect in every Way.....it is the place,. Bravo to the chef and its sous chef. Nancy and André from french canada. Bravo...2 michelin star....
Best duck I've had in a long time. Truly a one of a kind fine dining experience. Must try in Vancouver.
Good atmosphere for enjoying with people and Service was also good but little bit slow. Food is little bit salty & small portions.
Just spent my birthday party here this year. I love that testing menu so much. ????????The most impressive dish would be the mini foie gras bowl~ ????????????I would like to enjoy it again next time without any hesitation! Hahahaha! The appe creamy oyster really shocks me as well. Expecting more fancy plates in the future~ ❤️
A gem! Simple, authentic, delicious. Attentive service and great cocktails. A must if you are in Gastown.
Outstanding food and great drinks. It's fun to watch the bartenders work, especially if you are lucky enough to get a table on the upper loft.
Great place! We had from the small plates, the oysters and the veal, both were very good, from the large plates the caramelized sea scallops, awesome! As well as ling cod, very good. Service was very good Yes, it is pricy but absolutely worth it!
Fine dining prices, but not a fine dining establishment. Over priced for the casual atmosphere, loud music and small portions. We went based on the reviews but much like the prices, they’re inflated.
Fabulous! The fun starts with the Avocado Gimlet and continues with the bread basket. Sweetbreads on the menu!!
3.5 stars You can tell they put a lot of effort into the dishes. There is very little fillers like flour or cornstarch so you are getting the pure flavours. …
Ate brunch here Sunday with friends and certainly weren't disappointed! Great presentation and friendly service. The pancakes tasted fantastic (not too sweet, just how I like them!) and enjoyed the salmon potato cake too.
Great atmosphere and food.
Amazing food and drink! Can't wait to go here again. Katie rocks it behind the bar too!
Amazing and creative brunch. Been here for dinner as well and is just as amazing.
An excellent place for brunch. Reservation recommended. We wanted to started with pastries or scone before our breakfast on Father's Day, but we forgot to make a reservation. So, we ended up with a table at 1:15 which meant there wasn't enough time to eat pastries and a full breakfast before they close at 2 pm. We ordered Poached Eggs with Smoked Pork Belly and Full Breakfast. Both were very enjoyable. The pork belly came in thick chunks. The rösti was very good. The service was excellent as well, except the cider we ordered didn't arrive for the longest while.
I was never a big fan of these over priced fancy places. But wife wants to go somewhere nice for an occasion. Wow this restaurant changed my mind. The price is not just about the food although food was really tasty. Especially the steak and lamb. It's about the whole experience and service. Thanks for the good time. Here is my 5 stars.
One of favorite restaurants on the planet. Every meal is delicious and some of the best craft cocktails anywhere.
Great place for cocktails and dinner. Totally worth it!
Excellent spot. Good service, amazing selection of drinks, and while the menu is limited it's well chosen.
Only came here for cocktails and some beef tartare, but it was so delicious! Would love to come back for dinner next time. The bartender was awesome and super friendly. We ordered a couple rounds and then my husband wanted one more drink to share before we had to leave. She went ahead and split the cocktail for us so we could both have a little. I've never seen someone do this for a drink. And it was a drink that wasn't even on their menu anymore -- the Earl Grey cocktail, which, was so tasty! We felt like we were thoroughly taken care of! If you can't make it for dinner, make sure to stop by for a drink! Full menu is also served in the bar.
Very good food and attentive service. We have been here several times, and never disappointed. Steak Diane a delicious protein that should be paired with a starter. Scallops, grilled octopus, sweetbreads are all very good choices and excellently prepared. They have a great mixologist and a good selection of cocktails. Try my favorite, the Avocado Gimlet.
Good food but servings too small, a fine wine list but very pricey
I loved the red Shiraz from South Africa. The atmosphere is very cozy.
Polite staff and excellent service. Food quality is pretty good .
Great service and large selection of red wine. We went here for dine out but though the food was a little too salty for our liking.
I have been meaning to try this place for a long time . It Finally happened for brunch. Just one word; AMAZING! You might wonder how surprising brunch items can be. I shared the same view until I tried the brunch here and let me tell you the answer. You can be very surprised if you have brunch here.
Absolutely a unique and fantastic place for fine dining with special menu. Everything about this place is absolutely professional. I loved it.
Amazing food and service. Oysters, foie gras, and bread basket is to die for. Entrees are excellent as well.
great experience, attendance was great! wanna go back.
Presentation is awesome. Service is good but kinda rushed (maybe due to dine out.) Food didn't taste anything extraordinary. It was just ok. I had the saffron salmon and I didn't taste a bit of saffron!
They offer a nice variety of delicious food. I enjoyed dining here. The employees are always super friendly, pricing is convenient and the spot is always neat.
Great wine list. Sommelier served us as they were short staffed. She recommended a great wine.
Just amazing place! Unbelievable delicious food! We had absolutely fantastic time here! Super friendly people work here! Thank you!
Had an amazing experience with L’Abattoir for our wedding reception dinner! Their planning team is professional, patient and helpful. The space is top-notch, in a private building separated from the restaurant. The service and food were incredible. My partner and I are both plant-based and I am gluten intolerant(with many more food allergies!). They created a beautiful menu for us according to our various dietary needs, and we are so thankful!
Nice egg Benny. Duck is nicely flavored. Cute details in the wall:)
The food was good and very tasty but for the price and the portion size I would not say it was worth it. A friend and I paid 20+ money on food but wasn't full so went to get ramen afterwards.
Amazing food. Excellent place for special occasions.
One of my absolute favourites in Vancouver. Top quality dishes and service with an expansive wine and cocktail list. In the years I have been coming here I have yet to have a meal that was not perfect. Highly recommend L'Abattoir. I find the main dinning room can get a little loud, so if you prefer something a little quieter ask to be seated in the section at the back of the main floor.
Amazing food and service!
Was great when I first tried but recently hasn't been the same...
One of my favorite restaurants in Vancouver. Super consistent quality in everything they do: service, brunch, cocktails, dinner, ambiance. Small selection of superbly prepared items on the menu. From steak Diane to duck and scallops, the food is unbelievable. I start craving new dishes before I leave the place. A must try in Vancouver.
By far the best breakfast in vancouver if not all of Canada, the quiche and pancakes are out of this world, exploding with flavour and perfect texture. I cannot recommend this place enough!
Can’t praise enough. Amazing location. Food that makes you go into a whole new world. Their in-house prepared bread is the hint of their kitchen’s great job. Everything on the menu is a hit. Can’t go wrong. The wine menu is more than just decent, the desserts are great, the service is very professional and the location is very accessible. Would recommend and come back soon. Reservations accepted.
I love the brunch here especially the baked goods and pancakes. Always visit when I'm in Vancouver. Great atmosphere and service. Would like to try dinner.
Great ambience, excellent service, whimsical plating and interesting/honest use of ingredients. Great night out!!!!
Absolutely amazing food! Exactly what you want when you’re paying a higher price than a standard restaurant.
The atmosphere and service was great and although the food was presented very nicely, every dish I tried was just average. I was expecting more based off the other great reviews, but wasn’t too impressed with what I ordered.
Went out during their dine out Vancouver 2020 promotion, and their dishes were so thoughtfully crafted and prepared. Excellent service by courteous knowledgeable staff. It always adds to the experience when your servers can tell you something about your food that you couldn't just google. They even gave us complimentary samplers of bubbly since we were celebrating an anniversary. Great experience. The only downside is the washrooms were in bad shape. A few different bodily fluids on floor, and the fixtures seemed like they haven't had a scrub in a few weeks. But if you plan on skipping this course, you'll have a 10/10 experience.
Fantastic! Ambiance and service is incredible. The fillet mignon was absolutely incredible and cooked to perfection.
I had an excellent experience here this past weekend. The food, service, and overall atmosphere were all of a notable quality, and I would be happy to come back here or recommend anyone else do the same. The space itself is nicely designed, with a few unique dining areas spread throughout, including one that borders Gastown's Blood Alley. The wine and cocktail list are expansive, and offer plenty for all tastes. My choice was the Meat Hook - a bold, smoky mixture of rye and Scotch along with a hint of vermouth makes for a very delicious drink. I'd recommend this one if you're a fan of Old Fashioneds or Manhattans The food menu offers a nice variety of starters, divided into warm and cold options. One of my favourite dishes I tried here was the Wagyu Beef Tartare. I also got the chance to try the Quail, which came in the form of a sort of sausage with a deliciously glazed, crispy exterior. My main dish was their Honey-glazed duck. It was reminiscent of the Quail, so I would recommend anyone getting the Quail try a different main. Nevertheless, it was still a delicious dish. I appreciated the service I received - all the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu, and the wait times were very reasonable considering I went on Saturday evening. For two appetizers, one main, and four drinks, the bill came out to around $180 after tip. This was a quality dining experience, and I feel the money was well worth it.
Doesn't worth the money
Simply amazing. Can't speak highly enough about this place. Nothing is short of exemplary. Service, food, drinks. Gorgeous interior. Obviously it's expensive here but worth every penny. Why people don't celebrate special occasions here and choose generic places like The Keg instead boggles my mind.
Intimate and good food
Did they say deserts
The price was by far the most impressive thing about the place. All dishes were well done professionally, but the compositions would just not live up to the expectations.
Cozy, friendly, taste, but a bit expensive.
Great food, great wine highly recommend
Dine in
I attended a brunch here recently and it was amazing! The staff were kind, the atmosphere was stunning and charming and the food was unbelievable! When browsing the menu, they come around and tempt you with fresh baked pastries... The scone with jam and clotted cream was incredible! I would come back just for that alone! For my main I had the Lyonnaise salad with duck confit. It was an exceptional dish. The salad was perfectly dressed and the richness of the duck complemented the crisp fresh veg of the salad. Others who dined with me had the Poached eggs with smoked pork belly and the Buttermilk and ricotta pancakes. Everyone was very pleased with what they had ordered. Obviously this place is going to be pricier than IHOP, but you definitely pay for what you get! I hope to come back here soon and would recommend it to anyone!!
We just wanted to say a massive THANK YOU to Lainey and the whole team at L’Abattoir. We hosted a small family wedding in their private space No.1 Gaoler's Mews. Everything was absolutely perfect! The attention to detail prior to the event was incredible and that made the night flawless. The room, service, food, and drinks were amazing. Highly recommend L'Abattoir for a a private event.
Great spot in the heart of historical gastown in Vancouver. We tried a whole bunch of different plates and they were all done just right. Definitely a little higher end as far as prices, but excellent quality in a casual environment. Wait staff was next-level attentive.
Quite possibly the best overall restaurant in Vancouver. Outstanding cocktails, fantastic service, and the food, c'est magnifique! Comfortable setting, not pretentious in any way. They really do a great job here, and they'll be my first choice for a night out downtown for the foreseeable future, highly recommend L'Abattoir.
Great view, very courteous staff, and the atmosphere is a place you never want to leave.
Very good cocktails, friendly staff, good wine, good food. Really nice chilled atmosphere. I only wish they had better vegetarian options, or ability to adapt the dishes.
I really like the bread. Got the steak and didn't expect it to be already cut for me. Wagyu skewer on top was ok
Excellent food, I had the duck and was perfectly cooked. Excellent service, the server had great suggestions about the wine and told us also interesting information about the wineries. Amazing atmosphere, perfect place for a romantic dinner!
7 course meal. Fantastic, but i should have avoided eating the entire day - given the tremendous volume of food
If you like gamey haute cuisine and top notch cocktails, then this is the place for you
Absolutely stunning restaurant, food and service. The duck and steak Diane were transcendent. The wine list was very thoughtful and the service was nothing less than amazing. Great place!!
I had dinner at L'Abattoir last evening with my nephew and my daughter - celebration for her birthday. The presentation of Steak Dianne and the Cod was magnificent and delicious, physical service....excellent. Could not ask for more, but the noise spoiled a special occasion..... to the point we could not hear the wait staff. What ever happened to an intimate atmosphere....peace, quiet with soothing music? I hate to think that specialty restaurants are designed today to feed the guests at advanced fare prices and move them out as quickly as possible..
We always enjoy our meal here! Service is friendly. Drinks are nicely handcrafted
The food was extremely tasty. But unfortunately we was still hungry after and had to go somewhere else to eat, as it’s very small amount of food. Which after that amount of money you spend you don’t want to leave still hungry. But very nice place
Wonderful experiance, delicious food and wine.
Meh, Didn't rate it. The Cocktails were decent. Duck Foie Gras was nice but not amazing. Had the squid stuffed with Pork which tasted like rubber, and the Yellowtail(Kingfish) Tartare which was also very bland. Overall a disappointing experience which was annoying because all the reviews seemed positive.
Very attentive service.. also discrete knows when to suggest or come to serve and when to leave customers alone to chat.
What a great spot! Had the pancakes and homemade sausage... yum!!! Also, mimosas and an avocado gimlet really hit the spot!!! Awesome food and amazing service!!!
I was at L'Abattoir for the first time yesterday for Brunch. I was impressed with everything. The Décor and cleanliness of the facility, the friendliness of the staff, and the overall presentation. The poached eggs were cooked to perfection, and served on a pork belly was a first for me! I sat at the bar and watched Jose bartending. Mature, quick, confident! He told me that he had not taken a bartending course, but had learned everything at the University of experience! I was welcomed to the Restaurant by Liam, who was also courteous and polite! Bravo to everyone. I will return before too long.
Nice atmosphere, fantastic staff and delicious food. Trendy restaurant, classy yet laid back!
Cocktails are indescribably delicious. This is the best place in the city to sip spectacular drinks.
Innovative plates and fabulous cocktails
My wife and I went and got the Gaoler’s menu. Make sure you’re hungry as it was a LOT of food, but wow, every dish was amazing. I should add that service was phenomenal
Hands down one of the best restaurants in Vancouver.
Great atmosphere great food
One of our favorite meals in a long time! Everything was excellent - from the host, to our waitress, timing, decor, wine recommendations, and food! We had the tuna appetizer, venison, and halibut. All amazing. Balanced. Flavorful. Special. We already want to go back!
Pricy but well worth it! Smaller than usual portions.
The food and cocktails were amazing and the dessert was a stand out. But some of the guests brought down our night.. I know there's not much they can do about it but the table beside us was very distracting. At one point the couple left to go to the washroom together and came back talking about how hot the experience was... the table to our right was also shocked this happened. I don't want to be a prude but this energy made me uncomfortable and made it hard to enjoy a few of my courses.
Service was slow, pork chop was all fat, which is not the cut you expect from a pork chop. Drinks were great, steak was great.
Have dined here three times when visiting Vancouver, each time was great. Excellent cocktails, extremely well conceived and executed food (Get the oysters! And the steak, and the halibut, and the duck!). Well thought out wine list- talk to the sommelier, ask about Loire cab franc. Impeccable service, professional and affable. Can't wait to return, one of the best restaurants in Canada, IMHO.
Soooo good all around! Cocktails refreshing, complex but so well balanced. Great wine list. All dishes with a main 4- 5 ingredients outlook that merged in absolute harmony. Dessert was pure poetry. Staff lovely, serving speed just right. Venue contemporary, industrial and warm.
Spent the evening here on Saturday. The service was tremendous, the ambience was great and the food was absolutely amazing. Quite pleased with the wine selection as well. Can’t wait to go again
Amazing food and service, but it's a little pricy for the portion sizes. Great for any meal of the day.
A memorable dinner! The steak was one of the best steaks I ever had. The meat was like a butter melting in mouth. The fish was so lovely, and the idea of grapes with fish was so innovative to me. The desserts were one if the best parts to me. I see myself coming back just for having them again. The staff were super friendly and helpful, too. It might seem a bit pricey but totally worth it.
Service was excellent. Food was good.
Awesome brunch with great deal on champagne
It had been a few years since my last visit to l’abattoir and unfortunately it will be a lot longer before heading back there again. The menu has not changed and creatively the boundaries do not seem to be getting pushed anymore. The same core dishes were there that were in the menu back in 2012. That could be a good thing or not depending on how you would like to view that. The reason I hit this up with just 2 stars was due to the lack of personality and engagement of the serving staff. The biggest miss was when the appetizers came to table but no wine yet and we had to wait for almost 10 minutes for the wine to arrive before we could start the appetizers and of course the plates had passed their moment by then (the chef will likely be seeing red to hear that). When we could not flag down our waiter I politely asked the waiter on the table next to me for help and got a free eye roll because I was not in their section. The wine came eventually and the pairings were great but that initial kick off certainly dampened the rest of the evening. Still do not know our waiters name... The dessert menu is uninspiring and sadly the cocktail menu seems to have been censored. However, like I said for people who love this menu today still after all these years will be happy the staples are still on offer. I guess I was looking to be inspired as I was when the restaurant first opened.the real let down here was the service.

Best restaurant in the city. Cocktails that will make you dream, delicious creative food and world class service
Had an amazing experience with L'Abattoir, service and food was super good! Me and my boyfriend been to L'Abattoir for our first date in 2018. Jan, till now... we've back again for celebrated our 1st anniversary in 2019. Jan, service and food was outstanding! We love it!! And because L'Abattoir has so much meaning and memories for us, we decided that to come here for our wedding reception in the future ☺️
Got to try the steak, scallops, ling cod, and duck. Steak was definitely the nicest, as it was cooked perfectly and the peppercorn dressing on top was a fantastic touch. Smoked potatoes were a (positively) interesting addition to the dish. However, the other dishes were not as well put together. Scallops were fresh but were slightly overcooked (not the desired buttery texture), and the cod was well overcooked. Duck was cooked well, but it was lacking complementary flavours to balance its strong flavour. All the dishes could have used more vegetables/sides to create a more balanced meal, as a plate of duck by itself is a bit overwhelming to consume. Desserts were okay, probably wouldn't order them again. But perhaps that's because I'm more of a pie + ice cream kind of guy. Overall, the dining experience was very pleasant and the food was generally high quality. For the price, I think it should have been a bit higher caliber with better thought out dishes. Would be 4 stars if the price was lower, but the value for money brings it down to 3. However, with the cozy atmosphere and fancy menu, it's a good spot for special occasions and for bringing out-of-town guests.
Cute restaurant with bar seating, upstairs seating at the front of the restaurant, as well as a long seating section in the back. We shared two appetizers and ordered a main each. We also shared a dessert. If you’re not super hungry I would recommend only ordering one appetizer to share.
We went to L'Abattoir for dinner last Friday night (08.27.21) to celebrate our first two months of marriage (because why not) and because my husband had still not yet been to this Gastown gem despite all of our foodie adventures. If you're looking to mark a special occasion, note that you'll definitely want to make a reservation at least 2 weeks in advance - even during the pandemic! My hubby made the reservation and was shocked that finding a table would be so difficult, but I assured him it was worth it. It's the perfect venue for an intimate, cozy, and fun dinner whether it's date night, a night out with friends or coworkers, or showing visitors the best of the Vancouver restaurant scene. We were seated in the back space which is a glass enclosure facing the inner courtyard of Gaoler's Mews, complete with twinkle lights and exposed brick walls. Andrew was our server for the evening and provided impeccable service from start to finish - extremely knowledgable, attentive, and welcoming without being intrusive. We were extra lucky as he's also (one of?) the sommeliers, so he was able to give us suggestions on wine pairings based on other wines we liked and what we were planning to eat. He was a joy. On to the food! We started with a round of the Paper Seaplane cocktails (Woods amaro, Boulard calvados, Cocchi americano rosa, tart orange, avocado pit and oat orgeat, bitters), which we both loved. It was woods-y, and citrus-y goodness without being too sweet despite the calvados. We then ordered the starter of pan-fried veal sweetbreads on toast (pickled shallots, sauce gribiche with veal tongue in it) - it was delicious and the presentation was beautiful (really). As the name indicates, it's one piece of toast fully loaded which made sharing a little difficult if you're hoping to preserve the presentation. Regardless, it was excellent. If you're a fan of sweetbreads (or have just been curious about 'em), I would recommend starting here. It smelled amazing and so we dove in immediately, and forgot to snap a photo before we were half-way through the toast (not so beautiful) but it's a popular dish so check out the other photos for reference. Their famous bread basket was also delivered to the table and included 3 different types of carb-y goodness, including a cheese and bacon roll; a sardine twist pastry, and a homemade cracker loaded with seeds and spices. The twist and cracker were our faves. For our next starter, we ordered the chilled marinated octopus (saffron emulsion, chili, crispy potato) and it was the food highlight of the evening for me. Again, the presentation was well executed and all of the flavours and textures worked perfectly together (see photo). It was then time to move on to wine so in perusing the list and bouncing some ideas with Andrew, we opted for a French Malbec (can't resist teasing our Argentinian friends). We had the Château Les Croisille '19 Malbec which was pleasant - juicy fresh raspberry, pomegranate and blackberry fruit with a smooth and supple finish. Easy to drink, though not particularly interesting or memorable. For our main, we shared the Thiessen Farm quail with smoked and grilled foie gras (stone fruit, Tokyo turnips, escarole). Once again, the presentation was gorgeous (see photo) and the flavours were bang on - the little parcels of foie gras were divine and melted in your mouth. This was my husband's food highlight of the evening. The quail was succulent and paired perfectly with the bright fruit flavours. Ultimately, we were too full for dessert but Andrew surprised us with a celebratory glass of bubbly each to help mark the occasion. A perfect end to a perfect evening - thank you to Andrew and the entire L'Abattoir team for making the evening so special for us! We can't 'til our next visit.
Attentive service. Enjoyed the food. Chef / Kitchen was accommodating with off menu special requests.
The food is absolutely amazing though it is pricier and as it often goes, small portion sizes. If you are ready for that you will have a great time. If you are starving, be ready to spend a lot of money or maybe save it for another time.
Very great food and drinks. Fancy too
Sophisticated and also not expensive at all, enjoy the happy hour with great gastronomy and winery
Great menu and drink selection. Great service and amazing location.
This is my second time there and I have to admit there was a bit of a difference between the two services. What was consistent was the food (delicious), ambiance and location. My first visit had amazing service and this time around, the service was lacking a bit. Creamer forgotten with coffee. Accidentally brought an extra drink out (which we drank but didn't order).
Sat at the bar and just made it for happy hour. Bartenders were knowledgeable and friendly. Cocktails were incredible and food delicious.
I went with my friend Winnie for dinner out and loved the romantic feeling and the artistically displayed food
Good food. Nice ambience. My friend had the duck and I had the steak. She did complained it was too salty for her. I thought the same but my steak was quite good. We had told the waitress it was our birthday and she put candles on our desserts which were very nice. We loved our desserts. The chocolate for me was quite rich and I couldn’t finish it. They also accommodated my gluten allergy. This was back in September before social restrictions. Haven’t come back since but will definitely do.
L'Abattoir deserves all the accolades and more. Sure, the place is expensive, but it is a fine dine that is worth paying for. I save it for when it is my anniversary or some other special occasion, like a birthday or something. Just thinking about this place makes me smile. I mean, everything from their grilled pork belly and steak diane, to their BBQ octopus is marvellous. And who can forget their complimentary breads! The service is top notch and always leaves me with a smile on my face.
Atmosphere is romantic; menu is nice; food is awesome; service is great; sommelier is knowledgeable and friendly. Gotta try the duck foie gras!
Quality of food was good, especially for dine out standards. Steak was a bit on the savory side but everything else including service was spot on.
Amazing restaurant. The food was so good especially the oysters and steak. Service was top notch. I’ll be back for sure.
Everything was excellent, service and food.
Great food and wine with outstanding service. No wonder it's a top rated restaurant in Canada
Hands down one of the best meals of my life. A unique blend of flavors. Each bite had depth and complexity. This place is a must
My wife and I wen to ' for our first wedding anniversary. The staff was great, helpful and informative along with top notch food and ambiance.
Best french restaurant in the city in my opinion. Always good
Finished our vacation here and wished we had not saved it until the end. Though we couldn't afford to eat here each night, we definitely would have shelled out for the cocktails. AMAZING. We've tried making the famous avocado gimlet at home and dream of vacation with each sip.
Easily my favourite Gastown dining with consistently excellent food, and delicious cocktails.
Very disappointed with my experience here (seems like it's a one-off)! I came here because I've heard nothing but great things. Came on a Wednesday night. Nothing on the menu really peaked my interest, especially due to the prices, but we ordered Lightly cured wild salmon tartine which my aunt really enjoyed. I liked it too, but thought the flavours were a little too strong and the plating made it difficult to eat/share as everything was piled on top of a long cracker like thing. Also ordered Glazed pork cheek and BBQ spot prawns which was not terrible....but not worth the $36 they were asking for. First, it was room temp. Second, being an entree I expect it to come with some sort of small bed of carbs - but nothing. Instead there was a bunch of different sauces spread out on the plate, which was confusing and not really complementary to the shrimp or meat, so very disappointed about that. Perhaps this is just a reminder that even the best of restaurants have off days. Would want to come back and try this place again because of all the good reviews...but I'm hesitant.
Great Place!
Great ambiance and delicious food
Such a great dinner. Our waitress was the nicest. We had the oysters and it was amazing. Great wine pairing too.
Amazing experience. I tried the veal and paired it with the French Merlot. Amazing... the taste, presentation and attention to detail was exemplary. I really enjoyed the friendly and professional service. I will try to make a habit of visiting more often. Good news: they do take away as well!
Great food to dine and hang with your ghostly friends
This is honestly the best place in Vancouver for brunch! The Eggs Benedict is amazing! They use pork belly which is a new touch to a classic dish. They also bring around fresh baked goods such as scones, cinnamon rolls etc. You need to get the scones as they come with clotted cream and jam! Truly the best place in Vancouver for brunch!
Always high quality food and never dissaoints.
Over all, amazing experience. The restaurant itself is beautiful, the cocktail menu is huge and you can't go wrong with any cocktail you pick. Although menu is small everything is amazing quality.
Good food but very pricey French food
We were foolish to take this long to finally go here for dinner. Excellent bartender for cocktails, great wine list and the food......baked oysters and scallops were killer appies and the venison main was absolutely perfect.
Really cool spot. I had brunch here and the venue design is great. Food was great. Will be back!
Love the food, the service, the vibe!! The fried oysters...I dream of them!
We had an unexpected lively time at L'Abattoir! Joined tables with new friends, shared a few dishes and several cocktails ☺????????????????
Went here for the Vancouver Dine out menu. Food was good overall. Service was very good. Prices were a little high.
Excellent service. Cozy atmosphere. Delicious drinks. Octopus is an full flavor experience to get into.
Started with delicious cocktails, including the famous Avocado Gimlet. My main was the Steak Diane with a side of Oxtail marmalade, whipped potato, Walla Walla onion. Best meal I've had in a very long time. World class restaurant.
Fantastic french cuisine with an elegant and cozy atmosphere.
Amazing food and fantastic venue.
Love this place
Very good food. I liked the donut.
Loved service, atmosphere, food!! Try the halibut :)
No surprise this place is one of the best. Incredibly friendly staff, the drinks are top notch and the food was exceptional in every way. Beautiful atmosphere and at no point did we ever feel rushed. A perfect evening.
