Absolute horrid experience Never ever book a private event here. I went here for two consecutive birthdays and had the most horrible experience. The food was great but the service was HORRID ! Our server BOTH times was wasted, drunk, falling off chairs, being so inappropriate at privately paid for events. She was wasted and unprofessional and made the entire experience uncomfortable both times. I would never go back because of the service. The tattooed girl who was apparently the manager was severely drunk at two private parties and literally fell off the bench while cleaning, drunk. I wanted to love it for the food and drink but the server destroyed the experience for me TWICE. Better management needs to be put in place to match the quality of the food and drinks.

Morgan Ayres

Passionate servers and wonderful service. You can tell they take great care of all patrons. They definitely made the food wonderful. Worth checking out.

I loved everything about this place. The food was spectacular and the service was the very best in Vancouver. Thank you for a beautiful night!!

Diven Yeung

Good food, not spectacular. Trying a bit too hard and weird location looking into socialized housing units across the street.

Sam Gagnon

Hands down, number 1 restaurant in Vancouver. Must try Tajarin

Diego Martin

Typically, Google reviews are never wrong but wow, Kissa Tanto is very average. Disappointed with the flavours, even with so many expensive ingredients (truffles, yuzu) they managed to have uninspiring food. It’s not bad but it certainly isn’t worth it’s $$$ price tag. Plating is hit and miss. You come here for the atmosphere and drinks. Not for a palatable fine dining experience.

Talid Jalbout

Finally got to try Kissa Tanto and it sure didn't disappoint. The food was simply amazing. The layers of flavours and complexity in the dishes shows the chef really understands how to bring out the best in his ingredients as well as play on the umami aspect of the dishes. In terms of drinks and cocktails they have a wide selection. Our favourite (and recommended must try) was definitely the tajarin pasta, octopus salad and yuzu cream dessert. I do suggest starting off with a cocktail but not all flavours cater to everyone's palette. So ask your bartender for recommendations. Ever since Air Canada rated Kissa Tanto the best in Canada and Globe and Mail best 100 restaurants we havent been able to secure a reservation. I have to give Kissa Tanto credit for allowing some walk in tables. Without this I am sure most of us would never be able to eat here.

Andrew Heaton

Perhaps too creative. Complex dishes that didn't deliver. Especially poor value.

Marina Brewer

Such a special little restaurant tucked in Chinatown. The whole vibe of the restaurant is great. My favourite menu items are the half chicken and the tiramisu. Wait times can be long for a table, so arrive at 5pm or be sure to make a reservation.

Delicious food, good cocktails, and great service merit 5 stars. Make your reservations well in advance

Zachery Oman

Delicious unique food flavors and knowledgeable waiters who really are into their food! Go for the tasting menu and get a bigger variety of dishes!

Kelvin Kwong

Deliciously executed plates with an authentic panna cotta to finish. My wife and I aren't drinkers, just a glass of wine. Service felt European, to the point and taken care of without thought. Beautiful space. A pleasant marriage in taste and style of two of my favourite foods.

Jason Yu

One of the best dining experiences in Vancouver. Beautiful décor, very nice atmosphere and attentive service. We ordered the fried stuffed olives and the octopus salad as appetizers, both options were excellent specially the salad with such a fine sauce. As mains we had the Tajarin pasta and the Wagyu beef, the pasta texture was so nice and could tell it was handmade, the beef sauce and the mushrooms were delicious. As desert they brought us a tiramisu as it was my Birthday, such a nice detail! Thanks so much! Oh and don’t forget to try some of their cocktails :)

Amazing food and ambiance, but the highlight of the night was our waitress who went above and beyond in ensuring we had the best experience. Top notch service.

I have been looking forward to a visit to Kissa Tonto since its inclusion on a list of best new restaurants in Canada. Reservations are highly recommended and be prepared to have limited selection on dining times. I hate tossing 5 stars out too often. This place definitely earns it. The service, the atmosphere, the food, the cocktails all come together as a triumph. The eggplant fritters and octopus salad were our appetizers. Both were great for sharing. The octopus salad disappointed only due to the wanting of more octopus. Smoked a crispy, it was unfortunate there wasn't more on the plate. We both had the specials of the day for our main course. The tagliatelle was cooked perfectly and the seafood accompaniment complimented each other. No heavy sauces to clutter the flavour. The pork chop was aged 36(ish) days and brined. Crispy outside and juicy and tender on the inside. And the presentation. Just look at that and try and say no.

Michael Zee

Great great place made even better thanks to the awesome server Ronny B. The octopus salad is worth more than a try, the pastas are "legit", cocktails made to perfection. Desserts could be better but no complains.

Aaron Chin

Must try!

Joyce Fan

Absolute gem.

Maria Camila Rincon

Funky fun atmosphere with a classy flair. We had a great server with lots of energy, respectful, fun and knowledgeable. Food was super amazing with unexpectedly complex and unusual flavours. Squid and pork Tonkatsu was a highlight. Custard desert even knocked our socks off. They also have a small selection of "orange" wines which can be hard to find. Highly recommended.

The Boys

Great service 5/5. Food presentation was very good. Recommended for a special occasion.

Melissa Fong

Some of the best cocktails and unique Japanese fusion cuisine I’ve had. Servers and bartenders are extremely knowledgeable and the service is great. Loved every dish we had, don’t be afraid to eat outside your comfort zone.

Absolutely the best meal of our trip so far. Had the burrata special, cavatelli, halibut, potato, yuzu cream, & tiramisu

Never had a bad experience here. The food and drinks are some of the unique in the city

Mike Meyers

Atmosphere and service was impeccable!! Sorry I didn't get the name of our waitress but she was so sweet and patient with us & our decision making on the menu. The pasta special (carbonara with pork jowl) was super tasty, it had a great pepper kick to it.. All the food was great actually! So many layers of flavor. Definitely would recommend & come back!

Jay Jung

Amazingly enchanting place in Vancouver! Love the speakeasy-like ambiance. A must visit when you’re in town. The Japanese-Italian food was simply great and cocktails were done really well. Can’t wait to visit again!

Amazing

There is a reason why this restaurant takes a month to get a reservation. Wither go at opening or close to closing to get in without a reso. But I will say whatever you decide it is worth it. The food is delicious and the service is very knowledgeable.

Huey Duong

Exceptional in every way. Dishes were sublime and an intriguing mixture of Asian and Italian in style. Cocktail list was well thought out and excellently crafted. Ambience and decor very chic. Service was detailed, attentive and friendly without being intrusive. One of our favorite spots in Vancouver. Great date venue but expect to drop $150+ for 2 with drinks. Worth every penny though.

Absolutely fantastic experience. Belinda gave us great suggestions at every stage of our meal with authenticity and passion. Each dish was better than the last. A must try venue.

David N

Absolutly incredible down to the smallest detail. One of my top meals. Thank you kissa!

Mike Hejmej

Kissa Tanto was stunningly delicious. We ordered the "omakase" so had no idea what dishes we'd get. Each one was excellent with interesting flavors. The French omelet with truffle was probably our favorite but honestly it was all so good. The staff are friendly and attentive. Cool space. I didn't take any photos because the food was too delicious to waste time looking at. But it is also visually appealing :)

Cody Hashemi

One of my favourite restaurants in the city. The food is delicious. The setting is intimate. The service is excellent. What’s not to love?

Gus Castro

we were so looking forward to this meal, as it was my 79th birthday and what a delightful experience for the entire evening..an electric atmosphere of cozy and sophisticated.. the staff are for real, very interested in your having a special meal and not rushing our food experience...this is our 4th time here and to me it continues to exceed my expectations... we will absolutely be back and we continue to find free parking near the restaurant on local side streets...

Julie W

Amazing food and a very professional and knowledgeable serving staff. I highly recommend this restaurant. Will certainly visit again!

MEH. Our pasta tasted and looked Kraft Dinner like with mushrooms on top and our chicken came with a side of mayo (good but I've had this style at a Vietnamese restaurant on Kingsway for $10 and it tasted way better), eggplant side was unappetizing and the beef crudo was covered in parm and super salty (we barely ate this). Stuffed olives were meh. I was excited to come here and try what the rave was all about but after I've tried it once I don't think I'll ever come back again. The bread was amazing, I'll give them that.... and only that. :) Save your wallet the despair.

Christen Yee

Unique Japanese inspired Italian food. All of the pastas are a must.

Thomas Lerchenfeld

Great service with decent tasting food with above average prices and below average portion sizes. Delivers what you expect with good presentation.

Rachel Howard

Love this place (except for one thing which I will mention in the end)! The food was amazing – a fusion of Japanese and Italian, which are both favourites of mine. We had the Burrata, Truffle Omelet, Tajarin (very creamy and mushroomy), Sablefish, Braised Greens (this was a bit salty and was the least favourite of the night) and the Yuzu Cream. Everything was amazing but the highlights were the Sablefish, Truffle Omelet and the Yuzu Cream. The one thing to note was that while the Truffle Omelet was actually very very delicious, it was one of the specials of the night and our server did not let us know how much it was and I was a bit shocked to be charged $75 for the Truffle Omelet. It did not seem like it was worth $75 based on taste and presentation. I don’t care about $75 but was not expecting that. Partly my fault, I should have clarified so lesson learned.

T Nguyen

WAY overpriced for the portions size. The food quality was good, but not like wow. Went 3 times just to make sure. Not sure at all why they were elected best restaurant last year. Vibe is fun, but food lack originality and execution. Pidgin or Bauhaus will be WAY better for equivalent budget.

Will Trefiak

Loved it. Fresh, inventive, and very tasty.

Alan An

Heard great things, was underwhelmed. Might have got unlucky with what we ordered

L T

warm. excellent food. superb service. excellent food. cozy. reserve ! oh, did I forget: excellent food !

Francis B. Melançon

Kissa Tanto's interior decor is by far the most original I've seen in Vancouver. Also, this is arguably the best place to get a cocktail in the city. The menu is innovative with unparalleled choices. The servers strongly know their menu and are highly attentive of their tables. Cannot wait to go back!

Angie H (Roaming and Wandering)

Great atmosphere and service. The pasta dishes were definitely the highlight of the meal. Between two adults and two 5 year olds, we had 4 appies and 2 mains which was perfect.

J S

Food was way too salty but the service was decent and ambiance was nice. Took my girlfriend here for our anniversary. The dessert was the best part.

josh helms

Spectacular food, great ambiance and decor. Our waiter was awesome and well versed on the menu. All was as you would want it to be.

Kelsey Heikoop

Great food, atmosphere and service is phenomenal!

Meghan Hill

Cool place, very good food

P B

Amazing place for Italian-Japanese fusion, with very creative dishes. We had fried olives stuffed with sausage which we really liked. The Seabream Crudo was very light, with a tasty sauce. The Carne Cruda, which is like a steak tartare was good but a little on the salty side. The octopus salad, with kohlrabi and endives, was quite good. The octopus was really tender. And the Yuzu Cream dessert, which I think was like a panna cotta, was very fresh and light. Service was friendly. And the interior decor was old school.

Derek Morrison

Great restaurant, amazing food and professional but personal service. We will definitely comeback.

Valerie Sherman

Kissa Tanto is Japanese-Italian fusion and does not disappoint. The decor and ambiance reminded both my husband and I of an old-fashioned cocktail. It is a classy place, yet warm. We sat at the bar and I had a delicious Midori Sour cocktail. The rest of the drinks we had that night were all amazing too. For appetizers, the tartare and octopus salad were both jam-packed with flavour. We also had their signature dish which looks like pasta and mushrooms (I think it was called Tajarin). The only downside is it's located in an unpleasant area so best to just uber/cab right there and back. With the drinks, food, and service being top notch, we will definitely re-visit Kissa Tanto next time we're in Vancouver!

michelle gao

I love that my cocktails were dry

Ian Mc Donald

One of the best restaurants in Vancouver. Service, atmosphere, food - this place has it all! The Octopus Salad is incredible!

Pei Zhao

The food, drinks, ambiance, service, all pretty good but not as amazing as people are raving about. Presentation of each dish is beautiful. Combination of flavour and texture was fine. Maybe my expectations were too high. And so was the bill. Overall I was underwhelmed. I guess I need to revisit and give it another try.

Sean Brophy

Great ambiance, creative and tasty dishes and excellent service. Our server Belinda described everty single item in the menu so well, we wanted to order everything. Thank you Belinda- best service I've had in a long time!

Starr Trak

Great ambience and food, highly recommend!

Phil Chau

Greatly disappointed and underwhelmed - After reading about Kissa Tanto and the rave reviews for the hottest new restaurant in Vancouver we were really excited to try the Italian-Japanese fusion menu. The small restaurant is located up a long and narrow flight of stairs where you are welcomed by loud music and retro decor. We were seated at the smallest table for two I have ever seen in a restaurant. The food was okay but nothing screamed amazing. The concept of Italian-Japanese fusion either fell flat or was totally missed in the majority of dishes as they were really either Italian, or Japanese and not really a fusion of flavours. The chicken was raves about by our waitress and others but was really just okay and you can get just as good if not better at other Chinese restaurants in the city for at least half the price. Overall just really really disappointed and won’t be going back or recommending.

Sharon Cheng

Literally the best place I have been to in Vancouver. Very intimate atmosphere, exceptional service and delicious food. I mean, what else can one ask for?

Clayton C.

Love their cocktails and food. Always a great meal and great experience!

Anita Wong

Great food and service (at times almost too attentive since they interrupted conversations every few mins). But all in all, amazing!

Erica Yao

Overall the food seemed overpriced. The octopus salad was delicious but quite small. The noodles buttery but it would've been nice to have more mushrooms and flavour to the dish beyond butter. As for the eggplant side dish, I almost wanted to answer our waitress truthfully and tell her that it was terrible and yet it's not her fault. The bechamel was a bland lump, i don't know if it's because they wanted to make sure it didn't melt on top of the eggplants? In any case, this particular Japanese - Italian concoction may need some rethinking. 3 stars for food, the extra star is for service, very attentive and kind. The decoration is also quite lovely.

Vanessa Agrawal

Simply amazing

Kevin

Tip: ask for the booth in the corner by the window, but if it’s fall or winter, bring a jacket. This place is, of course, well known for its food. The quality, the vibe, the presentation are all wonderful. However, be prepared for a bit of a wait as most nights are incredibly busy and it can be noisy if you’re here for a date. I recommend taking the small corner booth where it’s secluded and quiet, it feels more private. Great for small parties as well.

Lily Leclerc

Creative beyond my imagination in both food and cocktails. My second time here and it won't be the last.

Sam Miller

Food was good but not amazing. Definitely eaten better in Vancouver itself. Very overpriced for what you get in terms of flavor. It's a good place but definitely not worth the hype or cost. Had reservations for months and left kind of disappointed.

Theresa Ladner

Tasty AF, cosy space, food is prepared with attention to the finer details, the bartender was very helpful with the menu too.

Sophia

Our expectations were exceeded with incredibly attentive staff and marvelous flavors.

Matt Jackman Wong

Another Vancouver venue where you don't really have a dinner, just small plates of overpriced tid-bits. The food is quite nicely prepared and the service is attentive. Other than that - overpriced and not very satisfying. We paid $600 for 4 people and I came home and made a sandwich. The wine is marked up about 4 times the LCB price. The place is so dark that I couldn't read the menu and the loud 1970's jazz-fusion music makes having a conversation difficult. Would I go back? No.

Presentation: excellent. Ambiance: wonderful. Food: just okay. Value: not there to be honest, certainly not at this price point. We ordered four dishes for two people, which was enough food (portions are small) for us but the taste was not what you’d expect for what you’re spending.

D BR

This place is one of the best restaurants in the city. Food is delicious, cocktails are creative, service is excellent and the place itself is gorgeous. My only complaint is that they don’t open for lunch! I’d love to eat here in the day time so I can really admire the interior. We had the fried stuffed olives which were excellent. The octopus salad was super popular as it seemed like every table ordered it. Tender octopus with layers and layers of flavour. Definitely a must try. The tajarin pasta was also very good. The steak was delicious as well. Maybe a tad small for the price though.

Riyad Mustapha

We came to Kissa Tanto with mixed expectations. A hard-to-get reservation and tons of positive reviews were balanced off by the atmosphere of a Tokyo diner back from the sixties and no dishes on the supper menu that would immediately excite us. We decided to play it safe and start with the octopus salad and Tonno Montecato – mashed, baked potato mixed with garlic and tuna, served with two slices of sourdough with tobiko. The salad was a real feast both to the eye and the mouth, well-balanced and delicate, with just the right amount of dressing and tender octopus bites. Tonno Montecato was a win as well, comforting and creamy, albeit being less sophisticated than the salad. For the mains, we ordered pan-fried sablefish in lobster broth and a sous-vide ribeye with broccolini. The fish was fantastic, well paired with the veggies. The steak was perfectly cooked, tender, served with an excellent sauce and some cheese that highlighted the flavour of the meat. After the satisfying meal, we decided to give a the deserts a try and ordered both options available – Tiramisu and yuzu cream. Alas, neither of them impressed us; the Tiramisu was plain boring, pale in comparison with the previous meals, and the yuzu cream was too sharp and sweet to my taste. I would prefer smaller portions of more creative deserts; that's the only reason I cannot call our dinner experience at Kissa Tanto superb.

Ahmed “Mido” Sadek

Really tasty food and beautiful ambiance in the restaurant.

Louisa

We went to Kissa Tanto on the Saturday after Valentine's Day for a romantic meal. We had a reservation and were seated immediately upon arriving. We sat near a window on probably the coldest day of the year so I was a little chilly, but a very minor detail. Our server was friendly, professional and knowledgeable; she helped us choose our appetizers and advised us on the dishes. The cocktails were really yummy! Excellent selection of spirits. (Did not try any wine this time, will be back though.) The appetizers were unique, bursting with flavour and delicious. The portions were thoughtful -- not generous, but not quite small either. I would recommend ordering a few different ones to sample as we did. The mains however were very generous in portion. Cooked to perfection and very good. Throughout the evening the service was paced beautifully and the food could not have been better. We were delighted by the meals and highly recommend. This place is perfect for a romantic dinner or fine dining experience.

Anson Li

If you've been procrastinating about eating at Kissa Tanto stop it and head there right now. We couldn't get a reservation (no surprise) but showed up at 5:20, waited in line for 10 minutes until the doors opened and got a table on a Saturday night. The menu is designed for sharing so one starter, one pasta, one main, and one side was plenty for two hungry people. It was surprisingly reasonably priced--$200 including a glass of wine, sake and tip. The food was deliciously unique. We ordered the crispy smoked squid salad, papardelle, whole rockfish and crispy potatoes. Everything was superb. The service was stellar with a well-trained and knowledgeable staff. The location is a bit rough (we were trapped in an ATM for 5 minutes by a mentally ill woman until some good samaritans saved us) so be careful and don't go window shopping after dark.

Jon Greene

The restaurant is beautiful, but I have to say that I was disappointed by the food. Chard side with way too much cream. And the main course was Lincod. The portion was a joke. Two pieces of fish the size of my fingers and over cooked. I was expecting either more quality or bigger portion.

Helen Park

What unique and tasty food, great drinks as well as an excellent selection of wines

B J

The atmosphere of the restaurant is lovely and the drinks were amazing (highly recommend My private Tokyo cocktail ????). The food was good but I was expecting a bit more for the price especially for the main course (both flavour and portion wise). Also really liked their yuzu cream for dessert!

Aaron Gurney

Extremely enjoyable evening. Drinks and food were tremendous in an atmosphere that was comfortable and caring. Loved it!

Nadila Ale

Best oysters I've ever eaten. Pastas were amazing.

Martin Malone

Good food and service. A bit pricier than it should be. When crowded the service gets slow, and it is usually crowded.

Randi S

Delicious food in a good setting.

Adam S

Came here with my wife on our 1st trip to Vancouver - thanks sweetheart. The neighborhood is "interesting but this find is definitely a jewel. Amazing food that's a unique fusion of Japanese Italian. Octopus starter was great, pork was absolutely delicious, and even their expresso was flawless, even compared to a nice cafe in Italy. Waiter was awesome and super nice. A wonderful find.

Nick Koch

Decor, food, service, atmosphere - all amazing

Tosh F

One of the best restaurants in the city. Great cocktails, great food, awesome vibe. Pricey but worth it

Sarah Tian

Decided to try this place out after the great reviews but we are greatly disappointed. Portion size and the way staff treated us made this place NOT worth our money. A terrible experience.

Shane Golden

Outstanding!! What an awesome place. The food was brilliant, such depth in each and every one of the dishes. The quality of the ingredients was stellar and clearly they use fresh and seasonal produce. The service matched the food for a phenomenal experience!

Rob R

Everything from decor to food was great.

Steven Rogalsky

Food was good so was the service but not quite what I was expecting. Perhaps limited due to covid. Would go again

Frank Shabrang

Excellent in all aspects.

Rob Gedge

Appies were so delicious. We had the octopus salad, wagyu beef crudo (my favourite) and the pork coquette. We had the pork belly special for the main ($50) which was 7/10. Not worth the cost though and a little too fatty. But service was amazing, quaint interesting decor.

Daryl White

This joint has one of the best bar & kitchen menus in Vancouver.

Kris Major

Get the octopus salad and the eggplant fritters!!

Soheyl Vakili

Favorite restaurant, possibly ever…

Nain Lee

Meh.

Christopher Yip

Excellent food, incredible service, and an all around great dining experience. A must have dish is the octopus salad which has some of the most tender and smoky flavoured octopus my girlfriend and I have ever had the pleasure of tasting. Expect to pay top dollar for your food, however.

Brett Thorn

Exceptional service ! Great food and quantity s not too bad either. Definitely recommend the tiramisu.

Ellen Sea

Reserve in advance! I did it a month prior for 2 and was only able to get bar seating (still a good spot you get to connect with the bartenders). Atmosphere was beautiful, great for date or a celebratory night. Drinks were amazing and food was good. I recommend My Private Tokyo and the Old Fashion. We tried the special of the day, white truffle risotto and cannoli dessert.

Diana Nguyen

Love their octopus salad. Service was great. Definitely want to go back.

Duane Brown

Good fusion. Amazing dinner. Loved it

Lydia Hollifield (affoleeloon)

We were helped by Belinda. Service was great, food was impeccable and the decor was pleasant. Overall I was extremely impressed with all aspects of the evening. Their cleanliness policies with regards to COVID-19 were also quite good, with widely spaced tables, masked staff, and readily available sanitizer. We will definitely be back, Kissa Tanto has cemented itself as one of my favourite restaurants in a single visit. ig: @nonsiccus

Excellent service and great food and cocktails. I couldn't get enough of the sourdough bread with their umami butter and the pasta dishes. The tiramisu and yuzu dessert was also delightful to end our meal.

I hate raving about hidden gems but if Air Canada did it, how can I not? Cool vibe from the moment you walk in. I've always had great service and always eaten amazing food. Tajarin I would kill for, the whole fish is worth the order and the specials are always exciting to try.

Good food but loud as hell. Could barely have a conversation.

Terrific atmosphere and design. Excellent food that doesn't taste anything like the same-old you're used to. Great wine cocktail and sake collection. Fantastic service. Go!

Mojgan

Great food service and atmosphere. Waited 2 months for a reserved table but you may get in as a walk up. We took the reservation route as we have previously seen long queues outside. The food was exceptionally prepared, presented, and delicious. Great place for a special occasion. The decor is exquisite.

Aubrey Cameron

Absolutely recommend!! If I could give them more stars for service alone, I would. 10/10 I took my little brother there for his birthday tonight. First off, the food was delicious. Though there were a few bumps in our experience, the staff were always quick & courteous to try and remedy the situation right away. They were incredibly attentive & their attention to details, like clearing the table including quickly and gracefully wiping down the table in between, seamlessly without interrupting your party, was impressive. They were welcoming and had the best handle on things. Despite serving so many tables, our waiter was always on top of everything & we were regularly checked in on. Didn't need to wait long for anything. They were simply wonderful & I will definitely go again

Chelsie McKnight

The appetizers was amazing but the fried fish was not worth it IMO. The server gave us sass as well which was uncalled for

John Laakmann

Rated as one of the best restaurants in Canada for good reason. Tough to get reservation to this Italian/Japanese fusion restaurant, but well worth it. They do have room for walk-ins if you want to risk it. The 60's style interior decoration is homey and inviting. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Get the cocktail "My Private Tokyo"!! I could come here just for that drink. Food was good, with some outstanding dishes such as the eggplant fritters and the Tajarin (granted we splurged and got fresh black Italian truffle added). Desserts were solid, but outclassed by the main menu. Overall, very satisfying dinner, well worth the trip.

Bella Rebs

Best new restaurant in Canada for 2016 so it's a must try fusion restaurant. If you have two people or less, walk in at the bar is probably fine. Any party size of three or more requires a reservation. They only have one booth that can accommodate up to 6 people. The food is interesting, as it should be. Order the bread and fried olives. For the price, I had to minus a star because other comparable fine dining establishments offered more but at the same price. Don't trust me? Order the ribeye and see. ????

Fayaz Manji

3 month reso list but you might be able to walk-in and sit at the bar. Flavors are pretty spectacular.

Michele Stocco

Divine.

Emily Miller

Good service, nice space. Really well done inside to reflect mood and vibe they are trying to go for. Bartender was amazing. Drinks were good. Food was good. Small portion sizes but good flavor. Very pricey for what you get.

Odinn F Helgason

Great food and cocktail. Will definitely come again.

Dhruv Govil

The Tajarin pasta is TO DIE FOR. We ordered a second portion after we tasted the first. I visited two weeks ago and I’m still talking and thinking about the dish.

Mikhail Nediak

Our new favourite restaurant. Love the room, the vibe is great, and the staff are amazing. The food is top notch. Unlike our other favourite restaurants that have a slip up every once in while, Kissa Tanto has never let us down.

Patrik Mlcoch

Nice cozy spot. Great food.

Rachel H

My sister reserved a table here for my 30th birthday. All the food we ordered between four of us was really well done. The octopus salad stands out, as does the pasta dish. It can get pretty loud in there when it's busy so you may have to lean in to hear your server. The service is attentive without being over bearing. The staff have a very good knowledge of all menu items. The decor is lovely. The cocktails are exquisite!

Sean Bone

Mostly Radish This place is overhyped and massively under delivers in terms of food. The only reason i even give this one star is because the service and pacing of the meal was very good. I do not get the critic reviews about the amazing fusion of Japanese and Italian. Nothing for flavorful, everything was under seasoned and piles of raw radish were everywhere without a bright flavours to stand up to them. I felt like someone was in the back counting money and laughing at us all while we sit there confused about why people/critics recommended we come here. Pickled vegetables - lots of different unique flavors but only the endive hearts were tasty. I would take the free banchan that comes with any order at a Korean restaurant over this. A lot of them had weird sharp off putting flavors which didn’t make sense in my mouth. Wagyu Crudo - excellent beef but no balancing bright flavors like yuzu which would’ve been great to balance the meat, just beef and radish and a lot of parm regg which only added more unnecessary unami to a frigging beef dish which did not need it. Some sprouts or micro green, citrus, capers would’ve made this dish. I weep for the poor wagyu steer that died in vain for me. Octopus salad - great tempura octopus, but overwhelmed as this salad is 20% unseasoned treviso, 70% unseasoned but beautiful shaved radish varieties and a green paste with no flavor to dip things in. Half completed dish with good potential with appropriate dressing and better balance. Beautiful presentation which is very painful to actually eat with chopsticks. Tajarin - Looked nice and recommended by server. This is over cooked KD with 4 pieces of sliced mushroom for $26. Whole fried fish - Well cooked tempura white fish without any real Italian or Japanese flavors in the seasonings, served with a mix of 30% soy sauce and 70% grated daikon. So radish fish. I would eat this for sustenance without the unbalanced sauce but wouldn’t pay $46 for it. I told my wife I preferred when she made me her infamous vinegar fish which was frozen filets boiled in vinegar and soy sauce. At least that had some potent though horrible flavors. We had a side of mixed mushrooms with this which were good quality mushrooms but cooked to a soggy texture and drowned in butter. A missed opportunity for a crispy/tender contrast within the mushrooms which is easy to achieve and more complex fusion flavors in the sauce. Not worth $14. Dessert - Kurabuta Terimayo at Japadog because I was pissed off after paying the bill.

Not worth the hype

I went in with very high expectations - on concept, accolades etc, but for me and my dining partner, it was just okay. Our server was really nice, and service was exceptional. The place itself and the ambiance was spacious, unique with that perfect mix of quiet-lively feel, especially from our seat in a booth by the windows. The menu read really well and the ingredients were fresh. But, there was just something about the combination of flavours, textures and temperature that just did not wow. Value wise, the portions did not exactly match the price tag given other experiences I have had in the past. I certainly feel I could have stretched that dollar at other finer dining places I have been to so far in the city / other cities. So, there are definitely pros and cons. The meal was not bad by any means, but just okay.

Kam Tafreshi

The food was delicious and we all enjoyed it. There are far too many combinations to mention. For apps we had half dozen oysters, followed by my favorite of the night, octopus salad with crispy smoked octopus. We also had Carne Cruda with is a tartare of wagyu, pear scallions, Parmesan and gnocco fritto, simply delicious. We shared main dishes of Charcoal Mafaldine consisting of white ragu of lamb, guanciale, chanterelles and toasted nori. This was followed by organic chicken with ship mojo dipping sauce. The final dish was a large fried perch with daikon soy dipping sauce. This is a unique gem restaurant and worth trying due to its unique disjoin and flare.

I had high expectations before coming here for the first time and sadly i was mostly disappointed. It’s a very cozy and elegant space with a lot of patrons. We made reservations weeks in advance, and also wrote down it was a bday but that didn’t affect the experience at all. Many dishes were fusion and heavily asian inspired - so this might have been a bad fit for two Asian customers who frequently eat Chinese food on a regular basis. I recommend coming here for a few select dishes and not actually trying to “fill up”. Also depending on where you get seated the restaurant can get quite loud so be prepared to talk loudly.

Irene De Guzman

Beautiful decor! Kissa Tanto’s interpretation of a beef tartare is simply divine. You also can’t find a better prepared octopus anywhere else, trust me on this. My only slight complaint is that the restaurant can get a little loud.

Elizabeth Irving

Great place to bring a date for some classy fusion cuisine

Jessie Liu

One of my favourite restaurants in the city! The food is incredible and the menu is so unique and creative. If you love asian fusion you need to check this spot out. The octopus salad is out of this world!

Peter Hess

We book in for the valentine set menu. It came with 3 courses plus dessert. We chose beef tataki as starter, the tenderness of tataki totally impressed us. It goes so well with the garlic chip and the onion and parsley sauces. The lasagna was ok, and the salmon was super creamy and tender. Also, try their Midori sour cocktail, it’s so refreshing and fruity, I highly recommend it.

Fabulous all around

doris chang

I feel like this place is overrated. The appetizers were good (carne cruda was the best; Octopus salad was decent) but the tajarin was way too buttery and cheesy.

Eugenia Pfeffer

Amazing food and great service. Love their atmosphere and cocktails but it’s very pricy!!

Dustin Chan

Interesting and innovative food. Very cool room. Good location. Decent service. Pricy.

Ari Laniado

Interesting and new.

Ken Lee

Really nice atmosphere, and our server was wonderful. The man who was the host was a bit rude but maybe he was under a bit of stress. The food presentation was beautiful but flavours were a bit underwhelming. Compared to some of the other restaurants in Chinatown, the only redeeming characteristic of this place is it’s atmosphere. If you are a real Vancouver foodie, look elsewhere.

Koji Otomo

This place is a must stop for drinks and dinner while visiting Vancouver.

Mi K

Romantic ambience. This super cheesy and buttery pasta dish in the photo I can't rmbr the name of, was to die for.

Jenny Hsu

This place is basically just an Instagram filter with great food

Lili Williams

Great dinner. Amazing service.

CAROL vuong

Amazing food. Reservation is highly recommended so you can get seated right away. Great service too. I’d def come back for more.

Tonya Surman

This restaurant never fails to delight! We have been here about 8 times now and food and service have always been impeccable.

Paul Gill

The food was great especially the beef tartare

Matt Pharrell

Asian fusion done right, great service and a memorable dining experience. Highly recommend: - seafood platter: it's not like other places that serve a bunch of boiled stuff, there's is uniquely inventive. Must like sour flavors. - pasta. Nailed it. We got the pizzoccheri. - yuzu cream (dessert). Just get it. - cocktails: four on six, - espresso dessert cocktail.

Frédéric Mazzola

This place is packed. We waited in their stairway for it to open at 530pm on a Saturday. Three of us ordered a bottle of pinot noir wine and shared several delicious items. We tried their octopus salad - so tender and squash tempura - nice light batter. We tried their house special pasta and tamarin which were cooked al dente and their so moist, crispy skin and flavorful half chicken in a very nice dipping sauce. For sides we sampled their roasted eggplant topped with crumbs and cheese and carrots & greens dishes. The food was really good. The service was friendly and knowledgeable of their menu. You must walk up a flight of stairs to get to their dining area. Plenty of street parking available.

Anand Ramaswamy

We loved our dining experience at Kissa Tanto. Sat at the bar, which was very comfortable. The restaurant is beautiful, service fantastic. Most importantly, the food was phenomenal. We are looking forward to going back!

Erik Christensen

Pretty room and good Italian Japanese food

Anna Brownell

Beautifully decorated mediocre food and over-zealous, awkward service. Worth it for the experience but the hefty price tag and small, under flavored portions left a lot to be desired.

Jamie Hankinson

If you appreciate unique styles of food this is your place. Very flavorful and different. Not overpowering but just right. And be sure to try a well put together cocktail. I've eaten at some amazing Italian restaurants and felt like the price was a little high here.

Ashley Davies

Odd combinations of flavours that work perfectly. Deliciously balanced cocktails. Friendly service

Cathy Wang

Good atmosphere. Great service. Tasty food. Wide selection of drinks. This place is ideal for a date with your significant other or a small intimate group dinner (table for 4). The bar looks like a great place to kick off the night. This restaurant is situated in the heart of historic Vancouver Chinatown.

Ian Villabroza

It's like walking into a dreamy and swanky old-timey train car. The space is beautifully decorated, and the service is top notch. I highly recommend the Chilled Seafood Platter. Every part of this platter is delicious and well executed. It's ideal for 2-3 people to share (though truth be told, I'd happily try to eat it all myself, it's that good). Their pastas are also done very well, and we really enjoyed the Tajarin. Also exceptional is the cocktail menu.

Edson L

The decor is quaint and cozy, yet stylish and trendy. The service was some of the best I've had in Vancouver, and the food was fantastic! There is something here for everyone. If you are looking for an amazing fine dining experience you can't go wrong with Kissa Tanto!

Mike Bloemen

The food is good but portions could be bigger for the price. The Tiramisu was creamy and very delicious.

Edwin Leong

This place is delicious.

Tal Mann

Love the whole fried fish

Jordan Ing

Tucked away in Chinatown under the buzzing street lights, and up a dozen stairs hides Kissa Tanto; a time machine to Japans 1960's jazz culture. This fun restaurant is a must-have experience. The service was incredible, all the servers were very knowledgeable and incredibly charming. The atmosphere is fun and the trendy crowd looks to be enjoying themselves. The food was great, but I admit I had higher hopes for the menu. There wasn't a particular dish that blew me away the way I thought I would have, considering the amount of professional reviews and recommendations. If you're planning a fun night out, Kissa Tanto should be high on your list, ensure sure you don't have pressing plans before or after, as it is good to get there early and expect the possibility of leaving late due to a later seating time than predicted. The high demand and table turnover rate increases the uncertainty in seating time.

jess cho

Absolutely delicious food. Try the 'Tsukune Agnolotti'. It was one of my favourite dishes there with it flavourful complexity. This place should be a Vancouver must visit.

Gary Yurkovich

Was super hyped up for this place because of reviews. As our reservation date got closer, started to hear not-so-great reviews about this place but figured we'd give it a try anyways. Was disappointed.

Erin Jacobson

Three of us went to Kissa Tanto as an early birthday celebration for my wife. It was great seeing how diligent the staff were in maintaining safety standards. I really appreciated that our server asked if it was OK if she and her colleagues filled our water glasses and cleared our plates to ensure we were comfortable. The cocktails were great! The food was equally as fantastic. It's best to dine here "family style" and share plates with your friends and family. The Carne Crudo, Tonno Mantecato, Octopus Salad were all excellent starters. I really loved the octopus as it was super tender and had a great smoky flavour. The Carne Crudo was like beef tartare elevated to the next level! The Spaghettini Nero was great as well. We had the whole, friend rock fish and we enjoyed it a lot! The fish was seasoned nicely and the deep frying kept it moist with a great crispy outside. Our server, Belinda, was friendly and attentive! Actually, all the staff were great. Service was spot-on! Can't wait to go back again!

Mat Tzetzos

Definitely overrated. The atmosphere and service are excellent, but the food isn't as great as people say it is. The drinks are also just above average.

Wesley Bullock

Incredible food and great service from Fraser and Christopher

David Lemelin

Amazing food and drinks.

Christine Mercier

This place is for those who want to have a good atmosphere but not worth while food. I am going to say that the service is great. I believe the staff in general are great people and work hard and are amazing, and the place itself is very cozy... However I do not think the price point for the food that isn't that exceptional. The tajarin was touted as the top meal ticket to get, was frankly ok. It is in my opinion fairly average food that has a lot of frills on it. It is noted a lot of commenters/reviewers say "the truffle addition to your noodles" makes it worth it as a problem. But If you're a person who doesn't go out fairly often for a nice meal, adding addition fifty dollars for truffles when many other pasta places have it already included or put in is pricey.

Hadi Ekaputra

Food is great, however I find the portion is too small. the decor is not appealing, and a bit noisy. I do love the sour dough bread, the chicken and the rib.

Ryan Tang

A very unique blend of japanese and Italian flavours that I don't think you can get anywhere else on the area. The service was excellent the food was incredibly tasty. Very deserved 5 stars!

Chelsea Dunbar

Food is excellent and service is impeccable! Their pasta dishes are so creative and delicious.

Clynch

The food itself is exquisite, very interesting and different flavours. The Japanese and Italian fusion works so well. Enjoyed the Tajarin and the roast chicken! The bread and the butter was even amazing. Definitley try the deep fried stuffed olives to starts Very cool decor and vibe. Wait staff are second to none - very knowledgeable of the menu. Delicious cocktails too.

Michelle

Gorgeous room, absolutely transportive. The exposed brick and neon glow from its 2nd floor window gives a sense of being in another place and time. The food, wine, and cocktails are all completely top notch and executed with precision. I only warn you this: crazy expensive. $32 for a bowl of udon - wow.

Kevin D

Everyone talks about how hard it is to get in. We walked right in around 7/730pm on a Friday night. Worth a try to walk in if you can’t get a reso, but call in advance! Tucked away in Chinatown, the vintage art deco vibe is unique. The fusion of Japanese and Italian seems more organic than expected, living in Vancouver we see Japanese woven into all cuisines. The food is good, not incredible. The Tajarin was our favourite, but dare I say it tastes like KD mac & cheese? I say that in the best way possible. Was a very nostalgic ‘ratatouille’ moment for me. Would return but not dying to go back!

Bobbie Long

writing this review makes me hungry again! delicious and unique

I don't normally write on Google reviews but this has to be shared. I heard the food here is delectable from various sources, Yelp and friends included. And I would have absolutely liked to try this place out for myself to form an opinion. But that didn't happen and here's why this restaurant is banned into my never-ever land of places to visit. We made a reservation for Monday 12/24 well in advance of our trip to Vancouver. Knowing holiday season is in full swing, we called the night prior to ensure the reservation was still intact. No one answered, that's fine. Then we discovered the restaurant is actually closed on Mondays which left us perplexed as to how or why they accepted our reservation in the first place. We called again Monday morning and again in the afternoon. And again no answer, which was not surprising since restaurant hours stated they are closed Mondays. Okay, no problem, we assume the original host whom took our RSVP made an error and seeing as we had a party of 6, we quickly pivoted and went to Anh and Chi for dinner. After our dinner wrapped up, we get a call from Kissa Tanto, informing us our table is ready. We explained the issue to them, detailing how we rang several times to no avail. Turns out, they were in fact open specifically on that Monday for Christmas and had a special menu prepped for patrons. The original host had not informed us, and taking a quick look at their site, there was no mention or edit to holiday hours indicating they would be open with a special menu. Here's the kicker. Since we failed to give them adequate notice of cancellation, we would be charged for cancelling the reservation. I thought they were kidding. And that my friends, is how you end up on the never-ever list. To Kissa Tanto owners and operators, please train your staff properly in responding to cases such as the above. A simple gesture in acknowledging miscommunication would have spared you a 1 star review. P.S. Did I mention I told all my friends and my mom? Twice. Good riddance.

Pat Sissons

Great time, great atmosphere. Their food were superb. We had a great time. Service was great. I recommended everyone to visit at least once.

Hello everyone. I just want to share my story. II was working there for training dishwasher job on Sunday January 3rd 2021. But now I didn't get paid because they say it's observation job. Even though I worked there for 4 hours to do the dishes, empty garbage, mop the floor and clean up duties. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Nathan Tondow

Solid meal and incredible service sitting at the bar, our preferred seats. The food was creative and every bite was unique in its flavor profile. Desert was also pretty memorable! However; For us the cocktails stole the show, definitely on the pricier end but well worth it! ????

Food was amazing, a very interesting take to Italian food. The place it makes you feel you are in a 1930's movie.

Tough place to get into - but they save walk in spots if you show up before they open. Kinda place where you say cook for me. Very, very good.

davina acedera

Food, service and ambience were amazing!

Stumble into this gem last night. It is expensive so be aware. From the service, which was great (professional, smiling and funny waiters) to the delicious food and cocktails, and very clean and spacious bathrooms. If you need a place for to spend a quality night with friends, clients or for a romantic date, this place should be your go to.

Still a great spot. Great character, original and creative food and amiable device.

Had pretty high expectations and unfortunately was disappointed. Food was good, atmosphere was good, but nothing wowed me.

Brought here by friends, we would not have chosen this restaurant as I didn’t “get” the menu. BUT, what an amazing surprise! The food fusion really works. We had a sampling of many things that were all delicious. It was a fabulous adventure.

Lisa Evans

My girlfriend and I were quite excited to try Kissa Tanto. We had seen the various "top restaurant" awards on various websites and articles. People do need to keep in mind these are clearly bought and paid for to some extent. Looking to spend our 3rd anniversary somewhere unique and special - we thought Kissa Tanto would deliver to our expectations. Unfortunately the restaurant was extremely loud and not the romantic spot we had in mind. It's more reminiscent of a busy whisky bar in Portland except double the price. Trust me, I can list off half a dozen bars similar to this style of "fusion food" in Portland. As I can appreciate that the restaurant is a bit on the smaller side and they want to maximize table turns, there were a number of spots within the restaurant that would have allowed for a cozier and potentially quieter evening. We made the reservations months in advance and had requested if possible to have a quieter dining spot. This was clearly ignored or poorly acknowledged. I had asked the waiter if we could be moved to any one of them and was denied as they had other reservations coming in later (so why not just give them our table as our reservation is earlier than theirs?). We spent the rest of our evening yelling over top of the background noise to make conversation. The food wasn't overly impressive - mediocre Italian dishes jazzed up with a few Japanese ingredients. More than happy to spend the money on trying something new but clearly not worth the value due to portion size and fusion choices. Cocktails weren't too bad but Kissa Tanto wouldn't be my first place to come back to for evening for drinks with friends. My second cocktail (Ol' Satchmo) had an extreme sour taste of lime. You couldn't taste the ginger chestnut and the toasted sesame rim didn't help to combat the strong taste of lime. I told the waiter I wasn't a fan of the drink but would be happy to try to cut the lime taste with simple syrup or club soda. He decided to bring back simple syrup... Please note, this was a test, you clearly failed it and should've suggested an alternative cocktail. Hard Liquor drinks have the highest margins and customer service should have been the priority. Unfortunately, this review ends more like a rant. In summary, this a restaurant that has dialed into the social media aspect of marketing and ensures to remain in the top of most categories to churn over it's eccentric customer base. There are dozens of other restaurants to spend your money in the downtown core - choose wisely :)

Ben Takaro

Hugely overpriced, very low quality food in a terrible part of town; so many better options in nicer areas of Vancouver.

Robbie Slade

amazing food and atmosphere - the space is beautifully outfitted in an art deco style.

Sohrab Merat

Amazingly creative menu. Delicious tastes and a cool atmosphere. Loved it.

Arash Ghavami

Very excited for this restaurant. Visited on 5th day of being open. The menu is an exploration of Japanese-Italian flavors and a very interesting menu. the food is delicate and well thought out. Had the following: Salad/gems with fried mortadella, anchovy sauce (yum), sea bream sashimi, fried whole rockfish, eggplant with miso bechamel, tiramisu with tofu mascarpone, zeppole with miso caramel (sooo goood), and pear sake. Great meal, a little shy on seasoning, but the menu is exciting and creative. Great service.

K C

This place is quite overpriced for what they offer. I found everything on the saltier side. But staff is friendly and personable. Their cocktail selection is very delicious and unique !

Mya Parsons

A bit overhyped. Food is average. Service is great.

Edmund Wong

Excellent food and a hip atmosphere. The dishes are interesting, flavorful, and uniquely somewhere in between Japanese and Italian cuisine - more so dishes that borrow from Japanese and Italian flavors than signature Japanese or Italian dishes done with a fusion spin.

Daniel Kuo

Great food, loved the octopus salad, but the fried fish wasn't that great

Scott Smith

Good place for a romantic dinner

Shelley Pringle

Tip: ask for the booth in the corner by the window, but if it’s fall or winter, bring a jacket. …

Lymond Hardy

Highly recommend. Pasta was beyond excellent. Service was great. Cocktails delicious. Tartar ( which I didn’t try but those I was with did and they said it was their best outside of Europe). Will definitely return.

Mallory Host

Fabulous food always

Rob Murray

Great food. Unique atmosphere.

Colin Fraser

one of my favourites in the city hands down!! love being inside this space and the food takes it to the next level.

Cecilia Teixeira

Hands down the best restaurant in Vancouver! Loved every dish, even the dessert. Service was awesome as well.

Andy Shum

Great atmosphere

Michael Moriarity

This restaurant impressed me, and I am somewhat difficult to impress (eg. Hawksworth didn't wow me). The octopus dish in particular was amazing...smoked first and then cooked sous vide...tender and packed with flavour. Cocktails are excellent. Highly recommended.

Kyle Tsang

Service was great. But food is overgrading to me. Too salty..

Jennie Yan

Their popular octopus salad was smoky, crunchy, and refreshing; Their pasta was buttery, creamy, and cheesy; Their chicken was soft juicy and went really well with a delicious oniony tartar sauce. Service was nice and ambience was awesome too. Definitely want to go back. The drawback of this place would be the restaurant location and the difficulty to make reservations.

Evan Wong

Good service and excellent sommelier but food was very disappointing. Greasy, bland, and over-salted.

Alan Tsai

WOW!!! Packed place! Seated at the bar, we had an awesome time... ambiance was great, hand crafted cocktails were balanced well and the dishes were displayed with great presentation and tasted O-so-good! Coming back again!

Kissa Tanto is a wonderful place to come for dinner when in Vancouver. The highlights of our meal were the octopus salad and every single one of the pastas. Each of the dishes were wonderful; the cocktails were delicious as well. I’m looking forward to the next time I’m in Vancouver simply because of this restaurant. Excellent service as well, our waitress was extremely friendly and gave great suggestions.

Matthew Selwood

Decor, food, service, atmosphere - all amazing

Janice Leblanc

Probably one of the best dinners I've ever had!

Allen Chi

Hands down one of the top 3 chicken dishes in Vancouver. Their egg pasta is amazing too.

Matthew Reichel

The appetizers was amazing but the fried fish was not worth it IMO. The server gave us sass as well which was uncalled for

Graham Williamson

I love this place. Possibly the best restaurant in Vancouver right now. Doing interesting dishes, maintaining an incredible level of service and having a super fun atmosphere. I try to go as often as I can find reservations on free nights.

J Y

Friggin amazing. Did it again guys!!!!

Sarah Rose

Gorgeous room, absolutely transportive. The exposed brick and neon glow from its 2nd floor window gives a sense of being in another place and time. Excellent service and staff are implementing the covid guidelines diligently. The organic half chicken with the shio Koji sauce was amazing.

Angela An

Amazing! Simply amazing! A must try! From the drinks to the main course every detail is influenced by the direction of the restaurants flavour profile.

Eaka Kwan

Food was amazing. Atmosphere was surreal. I grew up in Chinatown from 3 to 25 yrs old so I'm a bit biased. All these years, I've never been on the second floor of chinatown. Great restoration of an old place. Sat by the window watching appartment across the street with elder Chinese in their homes felt like a movie from 60s. The neon purple sign gave a very nostalgic feel. Food was unlike any Westcoast dining I had before. This is Japanese/Italian at it's finest. Had the gem salad, pork croquette, duck tortellinis, sous vide tenderloin. All were amazing, and I'm hard to impress. My new best of Vancouver restaurant. But I'm biased because Chinatown always has a special place in my heart.

Jeppe Christensen

Food was delicious and beautifully presented. Service was top notch, ultra attentive but never intrusive. The ambiance is warm and sexy. Highly recommended. Excellent adherence to covid safety.

I am so impressed by your restaurant! Last night was my second experience at Kissa Tanto and...Each bite is magic, without feeling fussy. The Pink Moon soda is my happy place (complete with crumbled rose petals - hello perfection). And to top it all off, the friendliest, most professional staff make it a fun, engaging and thoroughly joyful experience!!!! Sharing everything is fun, but I can't wait to come back for my own plate of mushroom pasta! :)

Patsy Lo

Everything about this place was above and beyond my expectations. The pasta, the won tons - the Tajin was phenomenal. Our server, was knowledgeable and kind. Definitely worth a visit. We went in the later hours, so we were able to score a table without a reservation.

Chris Weber Mirlach

Finally got in !!! Busy place!! All the dishes we tried were delicious!!!

The food and service here are absolutely amazing.

Wonderful meal, great cocktails, and friendly service.

Hands down one of the top 3 chicken dishes in Vancouver. Their egg pasta is amazing too.

C T

The food overall was good, but we went with the off menu omakase experience which is not what we had originally planned and it kind of disappointed. Although the plates were yummy, after the servers intro to the menu it seemed like we would get most of the things we wanted after hearing things like must try and definitely get that, but instead we got the high priced items really not suited for a dinner for two. An omelette drenched in truffle butter($24 for the sauce alone) although was good, is not something I had in mind for dinner at 10pm, followed by a huge fish fried fish which they only had a few left of. It seemed like we got what may have been the "leftovers" for the night. I'd go back but stick to the original plan and try the pasta dishes(we had one and it was awesome) and octopus salad, which combined would have been half the price of what we paid. It was likely a combination of timing, and miscommunication but the place is very cool and worth another try.

Every penny is worth it!!!

I am normally not a fan of of food like this: fancy and $$$. But I absolutely LOVED this restaurant. We got the autumn salad, fish crudo, octopus salad, charcoal udon, braised greens and whole fried fish. The autumn salad was probably my favourite dish of the night. I normally do not like beets and this was refreshing yet creamy and all the flavors worked well together. I still crave it til this day. The fish crudo and the octopus salad were both great- seafood tasted fresh and tender. The charcoal udon was very unique; I did find it a tad salty but it was otherwise delicious. The whole fried fish was amazing as well. I do not know what fish I was served but it was great - the soy daikon is mandatory to have with the fish cause otherwise it's too greasy on its own. The braised greens were served with the fish but that was the one dish that I found I did not like. It was VERY bitter (not sure if they cooked it enough because it was honestly inedible) but thankfully it was just a small side dish so we simply left it so we could enjoy everything else. Yes, the prices are quite high but they obviously use fresh ingredients and the highest quality so it is worth it. I would definitely come back here if I had a special event. Also, make sure you have a reservation!! We reserved much in advance so we fortunately had a seat but it filled up very quickly because it's a smaller restaurant and it is popular.

Danielle Hultqvist

Gourmet menu options, great service.

Victoria Badenas

I've been here enough times, they should pay me! ;) Beautiful and cosy interior with knowledgeable and friendly staff. I always go dressed up as a treat but you can still dine here in your Lulu's, because no one notices what you look like when you're eating the delicious octopus salad or drinking the amazing mezcal cocktail. Honestly it's one of my most favourite restaurants in Vancouver.

Sam Steele

Honestly, one of the best restaurants the city has to offer. Start to finish it was a fantastic evening. The staff are great, friendly, and attentive. The food is spectacular.

Gavin Clark

This place is such a neat location, definitely a hidden gem in Vancouver. cocktails and food are above average, and the atmosphere is very enticing.

Jordan Townley

We enjoyed great food and service in an open stylish space. The cocktails that we tried were all refreshing and delicious. Please note that individuals with mobility issues may not be able to dine here as the restaurant is only accessible through stairs.

Laura-Beth Keane

Beautiful food and knowledgeable and friendly staff. I'm a fairly picky eater, and if I'm paying premium prices I'm hoping for a good dining experience. The chef(s?) at Kissa Tanto really know what they are doing. Delicious, well prepared, and tastefully presented food across the board. I'll be back!

Marco Di Placido

We made reservations back in February and had high expectations given the rave reviews. We were very disappointed. While the portions were generous, the food (several of us ordered lasagna and the wagyu beef)was too rich and nothing outstanding to generate the level of reviews received. The décor was nice however.

Joel Hansen

This place is amazing. Loved the look of the restaurant, the staff was great and the food was absolutely amazing. Best new restaurant in Canada is well deserved!

Matthieu Lux

Absolute gem.

Chris Johannsen

Everything was great, prepare to share some plates. Whole fish of the day is a must have! Ill be back here for sure!!

Richard Lo

Normally I don’t take the time to write reviews but I needed to share how exceptional this restaurant is. The service was amazing, From the very beginning to the very end. And a special thanks to Hannah which was our main server and also to the head chef for providing such delicious food and taking the time to come to our table making sure our night was going well. And bringing my boyfriend and I some bubbly to celebrate our anniversary. We were recommended to share a plate from each section and that’s exactly what we did. To begin we shared some oysters with caviar and the octopus salad. The octopus was super tender and juicy it was very delicious and we also shared the charcoal udon which was AMAZING. It was creamy a little spicy and just perfect. As main we shared the Lamb and the braised greens. The lamb was the best I’ve ever had. It wasn’t gamy at all which I loved and super tender and the braised greens were elevated with the brown butter sauce. SUPER GOOD. And of course for dessert we had to get the Yuzu cream which I was shocked to say works exceptionally well with the olive oil. Best way to end the night. $$$ but worth it. Left the restaurant feeling satisfied and hands down without a doubt coming back again.

Olwyn Jung

Amazing service! Was very impressed with the speed of the food and the uniqueness of the pasta!

Adam Hunter

Great attention to detail - from the decor to the food to the witty and attentive service. We had the beet salad, octopus salad (perfectly cooked just wish there was more octopus), half chicken and sablefish. Half chicken is moist and flavourful. Never thought I would recommend "chicken" for fine dining lol

A review is always personal, having to pay a deposit with the understanding l can lose it. While having lost my job, and benefits for the same reason covid19 was distasteful, l have no control on getting sick. And have never missed a reservation in 69 years. Over all the food was tasty and creative, my family were confused with explanations at the beginning to much info about each meal, not everyone has English first. My family said on leaving that was not a meal but an experience, and they are food critics having been all over the world. They would eat there again l would not. So 3 year's 1 no

Catherine D

Rave reviews are well deserved. Service, cocktails and food are all first rate.

Andy Lights

went here for a birthday dinner, always prepared to be disappointed when an establishment has as much hype as this one but this one definitely met expectations! creative and skillfull use of flavours in the dishes (the gnocco fritto was a highlight). friendly staff and the space itself is one of my favourites in the city. prices can be a bit higher than more casual establishments but still provide great value in terms of taste and quality. overall a must try in Vancouver! A note on finding a table here: reservations were booked up about a week in advance, but we did manage to get in on a Saturday night by sheoing up within half an hour of open time

Devin Blaney

Great atmosphere, a little pricey though.

Jennifer Chu

Food is great but not spectacular. Considering the price and expectations, the food and style were on par but ambiance was sorely lacking. It was very, very loud for its small space. Conversation at the table was a bit of a yelling match and the servers are hardly audible. This was on a Thursday night at 9pm. Our water was always topped up but service was very slow - we weren’t able to order until 9:30. We wanted to love it but everything aside from the food was a disappointment. Perhaps on a slower night and better-staffed service would make Kissa Tanto 5 stars.

Ambrose Tham

Interesting and new.

K So

Came in on a Saturday night with no reservation yet somehow the hostess nabbed us the perfect table for 3 in under an hour. Italian/Japanese has the best mix of savoury yet delicate flavours, with incredible cocktails and a great sake selection. My favourite part however was the interior design--this place is beautiful.

Uyen Nguyen

it is right in china town, second floor. air is not very fresh there but can't prevent the warm cozy atmosphere. my bad, never got a proper dining table , but bar is always open for us. I like the bar, easy to chitchat with the bar attendant. and interesting to see all the cocktail made there. Japanese western mixed style . the menu doesn't have much choice but very interesting . real artistic presented and taste very good. will try all of there dished for sure

Laura H

The experience, ambiance and food are all superb. The mix of Japanese and Italian is genius. I highly recommend this place.

Marc Fournier

Nice atmosphere, service is fantastic. Just I'm not a huge fan of the food flavor.

Chloe V

Wonderful decor... the drinks and the food we're amazing. Our waiter was also very helpful and had some great drink and food suggestions. Tough to get reservations.

Kirk Chantraine

Walked in with very high expectations and it delivered. The Tokyo jazz cafe atmosphere was amazing and the flavour combos were brand new to me. Expensive but worth it as a once in awhile culinary adventure.

I would like to share my experience last night at kissa tanto. Last night, my friends and I went to your restaurant to celebrate her birthday. We made our reservation a while back but we still have to wait for 45min to have the host to seat us down. The food was worth the wait, it was delicious. However, the service was poor. Ronny had changed his attitude towards us when we started to pay for our bill. In addition, we noticed that Ronny was drinking on his shift and his face was red. We kindly asked Ronny put the drinks on one bill and the food on the other. We didn’t want the birthday girl to pay as part of her birthday gift so we planed to split the food cost and pay for our each individual drink. We thought it would be the easier for Ronny to split the bill this way. When we divided the food into ourselves four ways, and told him it would be on separate cards. He showed to be very upset. And, my friend could smell alcohol from his breath when he came up with the machine. Each of us were to pay $37.67 on the food bill. The first one to pay miss 67 cents on her part so she thought she can just tip a bit more to make up for the difference. When my other friend told the waiter her share was $37.67, he frowned his eyebrows as it was unbelievable or inaccurate, which was very unprofessional. When we started to pay the drink bill, one of us decided to pay with one card and rest of us pay her by cash. Then, Ronny started to tell us that we paid $1 less on our food bill, now that our other friend had to pay $1 extra. He kept on going on about the $1, which was actually 67 cents. My friend, who was the first to paid, paid extra tips to make up the difference, which would be much more than the $1 that he was referring to. He also began to tell us that how we were bad at math, and that we should let him do the math. Ronny thought he was really funny but we just saw a rude drunk waiter trying to mock us. All of us had stop talking and did not want to response to his rude attitude, but he just could not stop. He had totally ruin our night and especially for the birthday girl. I do not understand why any waiter would be allow to drink and get drunk while he is working. This is definitely not a way to represent your restaurant.

Sokhi Sandhu

One of the best meals I’ve had in Vancouver this year. Very hip and trendy, excellent service and a pasta dish that is worthy of your final meal on this planet

Carl

Inventive menu and delicious. The room is a retro design dream and you feel like you've stumbled across a real secret find. Staff are very friendly.

Flora

Amazing! Simply amazing! A must try! From the drinks to the main course every detail is influenced by the direction of the restaurants flavour profile.

Jonathan Walker

I wish I could be selfish and rate this 1 star so I can easily get a table next time. Found this place through looking at Tomasz Wagner's portfolio, it looks super cool in his pictures and it didn't disappoint me. It doesn't just look cool but both food and drinks were amazing. We enjoyed all the dishes specially the egg omelette with truffle omg!!! Two bonus we got: Our request for specific seating was accomodated. Our server Carolyn is very sweet and attentive, our table is wiped clean every time a new dish is served. She even surprised my fiance with a candle in our dessert for his birthday :). One thing I would like to warn you is the floor is quite slippery, just be careful, I almost caused a scene

Winnie Xu

It is definitely one of my favourite restaurants. The service is amazing, beautiful ambiance, and the food is exquisite. My favourite cocktail is my private Tokyo (slight hint of citrus, and touch of sweet~It’s unique in taste and a fun drink). My favourite dishes; I have a few favourite dishes, but if I have to choose my all time favourites are the Tajarin (hand cut pasta with a light mushroom sauce that is ever so soft and flavourful to the palate), the octopus salad, and the carne cruda. Highly recommend Kissa Tanto for a special occasion or to just treat yourself.

Andrew Szalontai

I'm not sure that I really get why this place is so popular. There was a crowd forming waiting for it to open at 5:30 pm on a Tuesday. Overrated? I have to say yes, even though I wanted to love it. I love the decor and the retro loungey vibe, but it feels really overpriced (and I knew going in that it was going to be pricey, and was in the mood to spend money if I was getting something really special). I had the $46 rib eye and it came out looking like it was an appetizer. The meat was tender and the sauce, the 1-2 pieces of broccolini, and little crunchy ash thingies all had good flavour, but I'll be honest, the whole thing was slightly over-salted. It felt especially small because there was no starch component and such a tiny portion of veg. I enjoyed the creative cocktail list. Both The Ole Satchmo and Four on Six were very smokey, and I happened to pick both of them, and I feel such a short list shouldn't have so much overlap there. I was impressed that the Ole Satchmo was pretty balanced considering the components. It would be so easy to make a very bad cocktail by just varying the proportions. So it was definitely interesting but I don't really need to have it again ever. I just didn't enjoy the Four on Six at all. Well, I enjoyed the pineapple garnish and how it mirrored the drink, but the singed flavour on the pineapple wasn't that pleasant, and I found the drink itself not that pleasant and couldn't finish it. The Service was great (I sat at the bar). And this trend of cutting back on the extras but keeping the prices up high is annoying - if I'm paying $46 for a small dish, a complimentary bread service or amuse wouldn't kill you. I ordered a $7 croquette also, which was tasty, and served on a thick, cold, curry sauce, but it would have been nice if there had been two of them. Basically, in this random visit, half the items were off in taste, all of it felt overpriced (though to be fair, $13 cocktails are not unusual), but the place had great style. Oh hipsters, you could do so much better.

Tony Gill

A lovely meal. The oysters were lovely and the chicken main was fantastic. An amazing tartare.

Jonathan Matos

Chef Joel & manager James are spot on with Kissa Tanto. To me the atmosphere is nearly as important as the food. It was clear upon entry that the staff were happy and pleased to be there. The waitress really knew her stuff. The look to the establishment was great and the food was top! I recommend it very strongly. Will R Hodgskiss.

Ben Young

I love Kissa Tanto. From the decor, to the service, the food and the cocktails. OH MAN, THE COCKTAILS. We came here last night for some after dinner drinks and was seated at the bar immediately. Our bartender Christopher took great care of us! Every drink was made with meticulous detail and care - he tasted each one for quality control. Just awesome!

Josh O'Keefe

This chicken is hands-down something to order. Perfectly crispy and tender meat. Pretty good cocktails and some pastas. Avoid the fish special (undercooked twice that I ordered) and the beef/steak entree is pretty uninspiring. Even though it is pricey, the chicken and pasta is worth a visit and bearing the line.

Something is wrong with the Vancouver Restaurant Scene: there are opening tons of fancy new restaurants that are overhyped. People are just running to these places in search of something that is not there. This restaurant is a good example: The place is located in a non great area of the city, in an old and tired building. To get to the restaurant you have to go up a staircase (2 feet wide!..how did they get a permit?) just to get there and find an absolutely sold out restaurant which claims takes 50% reservations and 50% walk ins. When asked about wait time the answer was "a while"...15 minutes? 30, 1 hour 3?...oh well we were told between 40 minutes and 3 hours but you can walk around and we'll call you. Obviously we did not wait..but again: for that much money one is willing to wait "a while"?...we didn't think so and went elsewhere.

Kristin Dorey

One of my favorite restaurant in Vancouver!! Hidden gem in Chinatown. Very unique Japanese and French fusion. The eggplant is a must every time I come here!

Tony McDougall

Paul Eccles

Delicious and interesting food, and great service.

Adriann Esteban

Great concept and lovely space but our dinner was meh at best and overpriced. Would love to give five stars but quality needs to improve and cost needs to go down.

Ross Papa

One of the best meals I've had in Vancouver. 10/10 food, 10/10 service, 10/10 ambiance, 10/10 everything else.

jaq martial

Great service and cocktails. Our server recommended a bunch of great dishes that we all loved. Great idea for Italian Japanese food. Will be back for sure

Selene Jang

One of the best Manhattans in town, and the food is just amazing. Service is always fantastic, always a group experience.

eddy tailor

I liked the food and can’t wait to go back. But there is one thing people should know is that the restaurant is at a sketchy place. I got chased by a homeless person before running into the restaurant. I wish they find a safer location in the future.

erhun arkan

Absolutely amazing, everything was perfect!

Maria Garcha

One of my favorite places in the city. Great vibe, food and service.

Iain Jordan

Fantastic experience - delicious food, unique cocktails and terrific service, all for a reasonable price.

Jennifer Mawby

Totally enjoyed ourselves here. Wonderful atmosphere, amazing drinks and unrivalled cuisine. The staff here is so professional, knowledgeable and friendly. Thank you Belinda and Sylvia for making our evening so memorable.

Sara Lippert

Italian-Japanese fusion doesn’t work as well together as you would think. The service was excellent. The entrees didn’t wow us like we expected. Definitely get the Gnocco Fritos. Incredible how they put together simple ingredients to make such a flavorful appetizer. Overall, we were satisfied.

Katie Crittenden

Sexy decor, amazing food and fabulous service. Definitely worth the wait. Highly recommended!

John Howald

Kissa Tanto is one of my favourite restaurants in Vancouver! Normally I’m not into fusion food, but they’ve nailed down combining both Japanese & Italian flavours and balancing their plates. The ambiance is also another big plus! Since covid, the seats are all spaced out and much more enjoyable then before covid. Bar is also great too, but try to get the bench area if you can. You must try their Tajarin pasta if you come, and if their truffle mushroom risotto is on special get it! I also really love their octopus dish and daily pickled vegetables. Drinks are always great too!

Victor Yih

Great interior... such attention to detail! The food was really good. My only gripe on food would be the unimaginative salads.. two of the smaller dishes were almost identical on so-so typical green salad base with 'bits' added. Lovely service. A bit loud and close to others in the 'walkins' area.. so go on a slow night or make sure to book a table! More dessert options please! will be back :-)

Salma Berrada

Great dinner. Gets very crowded. If you want a reservation you need to book months in advance. They always have seats at the bar and a couple of table for walk in guests. So we came early and where lucky. Food did not disappoint. Really enjoyed the starter (beet salad and octopus salad). Main courses were also great. Good portions and very tasty. Only dessert did disappoint a little bit. Its pricey, but worth it. Love to come back soon..

Steven Hodge

Gorgeous decor, an amazing vibe, and delicious and unique food. One of my favourite spots in Vancouver.

joe klymkiw

I've wanted to try this restaurant for quite some time, but heard its always too busy. My friends are regulars and gush about the food. We didn't have reservations but we got seated in a timely manner. The service was fantastic. The host and the waitstaff were super friendly, and personable. The food and drinks... everything was great. The pasta dishes and octopus were my favorites....as well as the one-of-a-kind cocktails. Everything was on point. I definately recommend making resos and trying it out.

Michelle Wilson

This is my favourite restaurant.

Not worth the hype

Hands down one of the best fine dining experiences in Vancouver. Concept is Italian/East Asian fusion cuisine with a modern cocktail bar feel. Decor is a kind of throw back to the Art Deco era with subway tiles and 1930s era American lampshades. Service was impeccable. Server had good knowledge of both the food and wine list and made a great recommendation for a pairing. The wine selection is absolutely fantastic, drawing from many different regions and styles for a variety of price points. The wine we had was superb for the price point. Easily one of the most interesting and well placed bottles, relative to the food, I've had in a while. The food is meticulously prepared and absolutely delicious. The plates are suggested to be shared family style, and that is definitely the way to go. In terms of what we ordered, I found the pickle plate a fantastic opening with a variety of flavours. The wagyu beef tartare (Carne Cruda) had an amazing texture, was well seasoned, and paired well with a fried bread (gnocco fritto). We ended up getting two pastas: the tajarin and duck agnolotti. The tajarin was served up with a gorgeous sauce. The agnolotti was stuffed with some deliciously tender duck. Both were amazing. For mains, we had a halibut. Seared to perfection and served with some nice accoutrements. Dessert was the tiramisu. Everything was soaked in an appropriate amount of espresso and topped with a healthy amount of cream. Delightful dinner overall. Enjoyed it from the moment we sat down till when we had to leave.

Mithalee Rawat

Great hospitality! Good food and ambience. We really enjoyed our visit here! I'd recommend!

Maling Sun

We were here for our Valentine’s Day 2022 dinner. Food that night was a little on the saltier side. The skin of the pork agnolotti wasn’t really done. They serve really good cocktails. None the less, we enjoyed our experience at Kissa Tanto. We will be back for their regular menu.

Mark Strother

Food was so good!! Staff amazing as well

Richard Kish

This was my second time dining here. I Came here with a friend. Eggplant side dish & albacore tuna were delicious. Lasagna was ok. The service was very odd. European server was attentive to my friend but I did not exist at all. He asked my friend if she’s been here before & if she had allergies & totally dismissed me. He barely could take my drink order & of course didn’t look at me at all when he asked. Our tuna came & we waited for our 2nd & last dish to come. We had to ask another server to bring out our other dishes. We understood that the dishes came in courses....but we waited for at least 30 mins for our other dishes (our main server didn’t offer to bring out the other dishes). The last 20 mins of our dining experience was a little better, I think because he was hoping for a big tip. The server actually talked to me & asked if I wanted another beer! I was shocked! I normally tip 25% but I could barely bring myself to even tip 10%. Food & atmosphere were good. I would have given you 5 stars but service was very disappointing.

Z Bass

The best foodie restaurant in Vancouver... They make trends, not follow them... Service is mediocre however...

Gee

Have to try the ol' satchmo and the carne cruda!

Alexandr Moroz

For me, this was one of the best restaurant experiences in N America in the past few years. Relaxed yet sophisticated. just the right amount of Japanese influences to make this a special place. Cocktails, cuisine, dessert, vibe and service. All 5 stars. Loved it.

Albert Lee

Delicious food, great atmosphere and great service. Our server was very knowledgeable when it came to which wine to choose with which food. Will definitely go back for more.

Laurent Grimal

One of the best Japanese fusion restaurants on the west coast. Great vibe and awesome shareable plates. Prices are a bit on the expensive side, but well worth it IMO.

Sean Daigle

The best pasta I have in town.

Victoria

Brilliant room that extends right through to the food. An absolutely amazing drink menu with a selection of food that is so well thought out and executed with skill. The Pork Belly specail was the best we have had. Be sure to try the Yuzu Custard and Tiramisu.

Amanda Lim

Our waiter was excellent! He recommended drinks which my partner and I both loved, knew the menu so well and also ensured we ordered the tajarin pasta which was outstanding!

Ligia Brosch

Loved it. Fresh, inventive, and very tasty.

Liz

Exceptional! Our server Belinda was knowledgeable, courteous, attentive and provided with top notch service without pretension or unnecessary fanfare. The toast with roe and potatoes was a highlight but all the dishes were cooked to perfection. The tiramisu was ordinary :( Great wine recommendations! Overall a fantastic evening.

JAmes Atwill

Although pricy, Kissa Tanto’s intimate atmosphere is worth the cost! The innovative menu features incredible Japanese Italian fusion dishes that work perfectly.

Roberta Oramabo

Very tasty and flavorful dinner. Highly recommended.

A very popular japanese italian restaurant in town, the entrance is so hidden that you might just walked pass and not noticing.Just a little noisy as is too crowed. Sake kasu marinated fish with yuzu miso dressing? This appetiser is daily recommend, i can't really remember what the server said. I could just let you know is cooked perfectly, all the moist was keep in the fish. The sauce is lovely with the fish, something taste familiar yet more surprise. Crispy smoked octopus, fresh and pickled radishes, mustard greens, parsley and chili purée salad. I just copied this from their menu, is exactly what they describe but they just couldn't mention the flavour. The octopus was fired lovely, great texture. Again their sauce add some magic to a salad. Tajarin cooked butter, roasted mushrooms and miso cured yolk. The chef knows how to play with the sauce for sure, the flavour is like mum, but i think is god's mum who make this pasta sauce. The pasta i would expect a little more al dente and maybe slight less salty will be perfect.

Akash L.

Nice place and amazing food

Allie Naylor

Kind of gimmicky and a little too on trend. One dish was excellent. Most were fine and one was pretty bad. Paying for atmosphere. I'd recommend several other Vancouver restaurants first.

Soni Mand

Amazing. Really enjoyed, exceptional flavour combinations.

Kaito Forth

Delicious food and cute decor. Great date spot

Atmosphere was great, staff was friendly/professional. We went with Omakase and got to try a lot of dishes (menu staples & daily specials). Flavours were all interesting and well balanced. Would definitely recommend this place.

After avoiding this restaurant for over a year, I finally caved after it was voted into the top 50 restaurants in Canada. The concept of Japanese Italian just seemed too strange... but somehow, it mostly worked. I would describe the food as mostly Italian dishes cooked with Japanese ingredients and flavours. We started with deep fried olives with stuffed chorizo. It was very good, but also very small---6 olives in total. The deep fried octopus salad was presented beautifully. Octopus was tender, but there was alot of radish and relatively little octopus. For the first main we had a duck stuffed pasta. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the stuffing didn't feel too filling. For second main we had the deep fried fish (ocean perch that night). I'd say it was a good 2 lbs, deep fried perfectly with crispy skin while keeping the inside moist. Fortunately they had an innovative way of scoring the fish so it was easy to de-bone and eat. The dessert of yuzu cream was the highlight for me. It had a perfect balance of tart and sweetness, paired nicely with crunch of brown sugar crumble. The "seasonal fruit" in the yuzu cream was misleading---there was just a dot of orange marmalade. The only complaint I have was it got really loud in the restaurant due to how closely tables were packed. It's definitely more of a hip foodie atmosphere than a romantic/fine-dining atmosphere. I would return to try more of their dishes.

Desiree Chew

What a gem we found. Amazing food and ????????. Think my old fashion was like 25 bucks but it was strong just the way I like it. Great atmosphere and experience.

Fantastic food, very pretty interior design and friendly staff

Got to try once , very cool vibe old school diner . Japanese / Italian cuisine . Cocktails got to say is very good!

My wife ordered dinner for me on my birthday from this restaurant which she knows I like. Due to the covid-19 dine-in restaurant restrictions, we can only order take out. The chicken dish that we ordered turned out to be undercooked. We called the restaurant and talked to Justin about it. We sent him photos. Justin insisted that the chicken was fully cooked because it was sous-vide'd and then deep fried and the chicken only appeared undercooked when in fact it was fully cooked. He did offer to give us a refund for the chicken. What he did was admirable but to me, the money isn't the issue. I am posting the photos that we took so the public can see and decide if this is cooked chicken or not.

Had a wonderful time dining at Kissa Tanto. All the dishes our waitress recommended are interesting and delicious. Highly recommend the octopus salad, My Tokyo (cocktail), and yuzu cream.

Great food in a great room. The food is top notch. Very creative and fair (not huge) portions. Food was fairly priced, especially considering the quality. The room is quite retro and we both commented that the acoustics gave it a buzz by being able to hear that many conversations were going on, but without actually hearing the words being spoken. Sat at the bar and got great service. Good wine list and cocktails. Both could be pricey but there were cheaper options as well. The bartender recommended the Tiramisu. I asked what was different about the Tiramisu at Kissa Tanto and the bartender proceeded to list the differences. He was right and I would highly recommend finishing with the Tiramisu! Overall a great night and recommended.

Jeff El Jefe Hunley

Amazing food and drink. The cocktails were great and dessert was one of the best things I've ever tasted!

Beck

I finally got to go to Kissa and what a treat! The staff were so wonderful, inviting and attentive. The atmosphere is lovely and the cocktails are excellent. I thought the menu was creative and fun, and it was extremely tasty, well-seasoned and well-balanced. I appreciated the time the staff took to help navigate me through the menu and offer selections as well as make some adjustments due to dietary restrictions. It was an absolute pleasure dining here and I cannot wait to come back.

Amanda Cho

Great food and amazing service ????

M Mahal

Amazing food, great service and fantastic environment! You must reserve in advance or your chances of getting a table is very slim! Love their cocktails too. Yum yum!

Dan Buhler

Service and atmosphere we're fantastic. Food was good but it seemed a bit overblown for what it actually delivered

Kevin Laurie

I heard a lot about this restaurant in China town but I’m glad I finally went. It’s like Japanese and Italian food which has great dishes for sharing. My favorite dishes was the Octopus salad, half chicken, Duck Agnolotti, and egg plant. I recommend checking it out.

Kelsey Whitman

Great food warm and welcoming service

Aira Torres

Yeah, this is the spot. Keep it up. Order the whole fried fish.

James Chung

If you haven't been here yet you are seriously missing out! One of the best meals, highly recommend sharing to have a bit of everything

Josée Paradis

This restaurant is bustling and you have to get a reservation well in advance! Their menu is fairly standard but it definitely does not come across that way when it arrives at your table. The yuzu creme is one of the best desserts I've ever had!

Phyllis Tsui

Go here with someone who has gone before. Family style is the best way to experience Kissa Tanto and they are known for their cocktails so go and have a few different ones. Squid salad is a must order and the chicken entree. The fish was a disappointment and would not recommend.

xuxin sun

Beautiful restaurant makes you feel like you have been transported to the set of Mad Men. Decent cocktail list, has a focus on varieties of whiskey and gin. The pastas, namely the agnolotti, were the highlight for me. The fried fish was done right, but the dipping sauce was not to my taste - would prefer a variety of sauces.

Derry Dance

Too expensive for the food that doesn't taste good. Disappointed.

Brian Chan

The stars are for the Tajarin, my private Tokyo and the yuzu panna cotta. I have been here numerous times but the food and service today were both extremely disappointing. Staffs seemed nice however service from our actual waitress was lacking. Food wise.. other than the Tajarin, we also ordered lamb and charcoal udon. Unfortunately all three dishes were extremely salty. Perhaps the restaurant was hoping that we could use a few more drinks by making the food so salty? I come here once every year since it opened years ago. Food has become so salty here to a point that I can’t enjoy it anymore. Don’t think I will ever come back.

Olga M

I have had some phenomenal meals while working in the industry, and being "in the know." Well...this time most assuredly paid off. To cut it short, eat here. Our meal included: Whole fish 10/5 Pork belly 5/5 Octopus salad 4/5 needed more octo per green item The wagu beef tartar 10/5 Pasta dish, they are all good pick your flavor. Arrived at 6, they opened at 5:30. They have a wait period of three months for reservation. We came in and took some of their standby seats, I believe you can sit at the bar as well. This restaurant does not break the bank, the f***ing enormous portion of fish(literally eye and all fried) was only $28 about a foot long.

Completely blown away by this place. Amazing ambiance, DELICIOUS food, and a super attentive and sweet waitstaff. Do yourself a favor and order the wagu tartar, you will thank me.

Pedro Candelas

Amazing food. Well worth the wait in line. They do take walk-ins if you go first thing. Can't wait to visit Vancouver again and go back!

denise papadatos

Cocktails were simple and done well, nothing crazy but definitely had some unique aspects (in a good way). Starters and pastas were amazing, can't really go wrong with what you order there. We also got the fried fish. It was good, but nothing special. I'd probably just get another pasta dish if I go back.

Christopher McClain

Amazing small plates and drinks, can't wait to come back.

Duan Nguyen

Service was great. But food is overgrading to me. Too salty..

From the moment I walked in the staff was attentive and ready. My drinks and food came in very short time, and everything was amazingly delicious.

Excellent food and really cool vibe. Felt like a classy club from the 50s.

Derek Townsend

Low ceiling, loud af. Food is good/interesting, great service.

Cannot rave more about this place - incredible food, vibe, service, and drinks. 80s Tokyo jazz nostalgia mixed with Italian delicacies -- what more could one want

Dave Empey

Amazing food, meant to be shared. The cocktails are stellar. Great for a date or special occasion.

Ritu Sood

One of the best dining experience of my life. The food and service were amazing.

This place is a must stop for drinks and dinner while visiting Vancouver.

Brietta Stewart

We were rushed for timing and our server still managed to make our visit memorable. Great cocktails, fantastic food, brilliant service. Hope to be back soon.

Janice Y

Fine dining indeed! Everything was top notch. Food? I didn't know half the ingredients but I don't care it was divine! (Not a word I use often lol). The drinks? Forget about it best I've had in a very long time. A great place for an amazingly fancy dining experience. Just don't worry about the bill. Its worth it!

Nick

Lucky to snag seats at the bar! Super busy. Fantastic ambiance, food, drinks, this place has it all. We're so lucky to live in this area; so many new amazing restaurants we can walk to.

Tannaz Afshar

We had a great experience. Sat at the bar for drinks and dinner. The guys behind the bar were very attentive. Food was very good. I think there should be a couple value oriented red and white wine choices.

K W

Been here several times food is always so amazing and service is superb. All their pasta is good chicken is to die for...who knew right? Steak tartar, octopus salad and fish crudo

Rene Y

Arguably the best restaurant in Vancouver. Awesome atmosphere and great service. The food is outstanding and the drinks are perfect.

Great concept, excellent service, cocktails and food.

Sean King

One of the best in the city.

I've wanted to try this restaurant for quite some time, but heard its always too busy. My friends are regulars and gush about the food. We didn't have reservations but we got seated in a timely manner. The service was fantastic. The host …

Best food and ambiance. Would come back yearly! Everything is great and a must try

The have the most creative cocktail that I have tried in Vancouver! All dishes we ordered taste great! The whole deep fried the fish was definitely the most memorable dish of them all!!

Yoad Ben-Itzhak

Food was really good, we had octopus salad which was our favorite. As well as tajarin pasta , half chicken and spring salmon, which all were great. service and atmosphere were also superb. Would definitely recommend. Its on a pricier side but totally worth it. I would recommend booking reservation ahead of time. But they do accept walk ins.

Jerry Bluehorse

Very elegant and amazing overall experience! This restaurant sets the bar for all the Vancouver restaurants!

Lloyd VanCity

Super yummy food in a cool atmosphere. A gem

I was expecting more from this restaurant since it's difficult to make a reservation & the food was not i was expecting... I thought it was going to be more fusion. The service was great, they were attentive and they serve the best mint tea that I've tasted since they use real mint leaves

Another restaurant added to the "revival" of Chinatown. Kissa Tanto is a marriage of Italian and Japanese cuisine and they live up to their name as the hosue of plenty. I've dined here 3 times now and each time is better than the last (mainly because I think I was here during the soft opening, opening month and the last visit was a few months after opening) They have worked out their kinks well (wasn't many to start) and the service is really attentive but not intrusive. Some stand outs for me during my last visit was the fried octopus salad, carne cruda and my favourite pasta dish here the tajarin (ordered it every visit). The menu is constantly being tweaked or rotated but it is hard to go wrong here. Oh and cannot forget the decor! Great nod to the jazz clubs of an earlier time.

carson Yamamoto

Great dinning experience, server was great. It was a lovely dinning experience. Love the old school asian decor theme. My only thing was the room was a little warm for my liking. Although my guess thought it was the right temperature.

Lovely restaurant

The meal was good but expensive and the waitress's behaviour was odd. I can't remember ever being treated so badly by a waitress. I told her I had food sensitivities and asked her what was in the dipping sauce, but she only told me three of the ingredients, but made it sound like that was all that was in it, leaving out so many other ingredients, including the main ingredient which was mayonnaise. Then she told me she "would not be responsible" for any other ingredients that might be in the food. How about just being responsible for saying the ingredients that are in the food, when a customer asks? That would be a start. After tasting it, I asked her again about the ingredients because it didn't taste at all like what she had described, so I was confused. And then she told me that it is "your responsibility to tell me EXACTLY what you can't eat." I have many food sensitivities (which I'd already explained to her from the moment I sat down) and if she had just told me the ingredients when I asked that would have been fine. For a $100 meal I would have expected a more professional, communicative, and kind waitress. After that I felt uncomfortable in there and just wanted to leave. And I won't be going back.

This place meets all expectations. We took the 10:15p reservation because that’s what you do for truly epic cuisine. The chef’s dishes are imaginative, unique, and insanely delicious. Hands down one of the best meals I’ve had in 2021 and …

It’s Friday night @kissatanto for pre-Valentine’s dinner ❤️ and it’s our first time at Kissa Tanto. I love the decor as inspired Tokyo jazz cafes. The food (Italian & Japanese) and experience with Belinda S. made us feel so welcomed and at home. We throughly enjoyed each dish -> here we go! ???? Carne Cruda - Snake River Farms wagyu, nashi pear, charred scallion soy, parmesan, arima sansho, gnocco fritto. My goodness, this was so delicious! ???? Mezzi Rigatoni - nut fed pork ragu, tomato xo butter, sesame crumb. Homemade pasta and loved the crunch from that sesame crumb ???? Organic Half Chicken - shio koji dipping sauce, herbed oil. It was so tender and flavourful. ???? Sablefish - nanban oyster mushrooms, chili salmoriglio, marinated currants, pine nuts, sunchoke purée. My favourite dish as it was cooked perfectly and the flavours made this dish come alive! ???? Yaki Onigiri- grilled pressed rice stuffed with himematsu mushrooms, Parmesan, roasted chicken consommé, pickled shiso, Piave vecchio. Crunch crunch. Fantastic flavours with each bite. Memorable experience dining at Kissa Tanto.

Presentation: excellent. Ambiance: wonderful. Food: just okay. Value: not there to be honest, certainly not at this price point. We ordered four dishes for two people, which was enough food (portions are small) for us but the taste was not what you’d expect for what you’re spending.

anthony banke

A 50s throwback venue with some of the best dishes in town!!

Gabriela Trejo

This place has it all. Funky decor, great cocktails and food, and exceptional service. The recommendation from our server was spot on. With a table of 4 you’ll want about 6 dishes to share.

Rebecca P

Cool atmosphere and great food! Our server was extremely knowledgeable about the cocktails, food and wine. The whole experience was amazing. I would definitely recommend!

Jessica Leitch

Unbelievably good service and the food was inventive and executed perfectly.

Shay K

Would not have expected a restaurant of this caliber to be located in the heart of Chinatown. Love the decor and atmosphere; servers were attentive. Cocktails were amazing. We had the fish crudo, octopus salad, and lamb pasta. Food were nicely presented; lamb pasta and octopus salad were great; the fish crudo was just ok. However, portions were on the small side for the price.

Mikhaila Searle

Amazing experience! Service ???? Decor ???? food ???? i wish i have one place like these in Montréal, thanks to the team!!

AL de Zilva

Went here for dinner after seeing this restaurant was ranked top 10 in Canada. We were very disappointed as the food was at best mediocre. Everything we had lacked flavour, was slightly cold, and was very small. We paid $50 for udon and it was the worst udon I’ve had. We also had the carne crudo and it wasn’t bad but again it just lacked flavour. Also the lamb was tough and very chewy. We had to keep drenching it in the sauce to make it edible. I don’t know how this is fine dining or who makes the top 10 rankings, but this restaurant just isn’t good for being so expensive.

Jason Dippel

Went here on a Saturday. First of all, I want to mention their service. Every server and staff we interacted with was absolutely delightful and so informative! The food was really good the service and ambiance of the atmosphere definitely elevates the experience of the food. Our server really knew his information about each dish and was able to answer our questions or provide suggestions. Highly recommend to start off with the Octopus Salad (was our favourite of the amazing dishes we had)Thank you so much Kissa Tanto!

Kaity C

Food was amazing. Good service. Quality of ingredients is great! We had many meals, but couldn't decide what we like the most - everything was special and delicious!

Joyce L

Thoughtful. Creative. Friendly. Sophisticated. Not pretentious. DELICIOUS.

Cathy C

We had a pleasant dining experience. The staff were professional and courteous. We were particularly pleased with the in-house made noodles. The recommended special, whole fish, was enjoyable, however I would not order it again.

Nicole Whiting

Kissa Tanto is a unique dining experience in Vancouver with Japanese-Italian fare. Reservations are notoriously hard to get, but they do save the bar area for walk ins only. Sitting at the bar, you’ll think you have been transported in time, with mid century modern decor and vinyl records adorning the bookshelves. The atmosphere is a treat, and the cocktails impressive, but it’s the food that keeps us coming back. The tajarin is spectacular, made with handmade pasta, mushrooms and a dusting of parmesan. We opted for the truffle addition, but honestly it didn’t need it as the mushroom flavors came through just fine. The drinks are carefully crafted with meticulous detail, keeping with the Japanese Italian menu. I had the Salary Man’s Song made with tart yuzu, and I thought it went quite well with the tartare appetizer. We did bring our own bottle of wine for a special occasion, but the BYOB cost is pricey at $45. It’s a gem of a restaurant in Chinatown worth checking out!

Micheal Bugeja

Hands down my favorite restaurant in Vancouver! Honestly has some of the tastiest drinks in the city--my personal fave (Japanese G&T) Pictured: Carne Crudo, Tajarin (add the extra truffle butter!), Spelt Seafood Udon, Mezzi Rigatoni, Braised Greens, Yuzu Creme

Lisa B

Getting reservation was rather troublesome .. Just goes to show you how popular Kissa Tanto is! I recommend the Octopus salad- and Tajarin (pasta dish). Both were very delicious and left me wanting more. The fried fish and polenta were just ok. Expected a bit more for a restaurant of this calibur for the latter dishes. The service was excellen! Our waitress was very attentive and knew the menu very well. In addition, our glasses were kept full, table was cleaned regularly and dirty dishes were replaced.

Matthew Knight

To me this restaurant is bit overrated for a five star. The environment is like a classic fine dining restaurant and the service is very very good, they change plate in between every dish and our server check on us at least every 5-10 mins to refill drinks etc. However, the food was just very plain. Signature fish crudo was like covered in oil and underseasoned. The fish was quite fresh but all other elements on the dish sort of destroyed the freshness of the fish. The pasta was quite a small portion for 28$, flavor wise better than the fish crudo but nothing surprising. We had a pork tenderloin for entree and it was cold, and the plate was cold too, which made the last couple bits extremely hard due to the fat of the pork. Tiramisu was just like one you can get at any bakery, standard but nothing surprising.

Emily Hg

Utterly overrated and over priced.

Troy Tham

I was disappointed, honestly. They're so highly regarded, the service was so good, my cocktail was great, but I feel like every dish I tried was trying to do too many things at once. The "fusion" didn't feel harmonious, it felt like ingredients were shoehorned into plates rather than being thoughtfully constructed and balanced. I'm going to give them another shot the next time I'm in town, maybe I caught them on an off night?

Nathaniel Moore

Came here expecting poor service, rude wait staff and a miserable dining experience. Completely disappointed that everything was pleasant and enjoyable. How can I complain if there's nothing to complain about?

Ann Wu

Exquisite dining, superb staff!

Edmond Chen

One of those trendy places that lives up to the hype. The octopus salad: perfectly cooked and as complex as my last relationship. The chicken: so moist and rich, I wish it didn't have to end. The cocktails were not the star of the show, but that's honestly okay. Also shout-out to Hanna(h) for the rockstar service -- I hope her boss is reading this, because she was impressively fluent in the menu.

Joseph Wong

Very disappointing.... We went to this restaurant because of the reviews and the hype about it.. We were given 2 hours for our table, and could not have a full meal as the kitchen was extremely slow... here is our rating: Service: Excellent. Our waiter was on the ball. He knew his menu. Price: Over priced for what they serve including their glass of wine. Taste: The potato croquette was OK but one could find a better one somewhere else. We had fish roe on roasted bread with a potato mousse (?) that was more like mashed-potato, this was so-so, but the roasted bread was nice. The beef (Wagyu Lifter Steak) was tender but lacked seasoning but there was a sauce with it, the only issue is that we had to wait a good 45 minutes for it... the Lamb Shoulder was not available so we got a Lamb Saddle which was very nice and the veggies with it were also very nice and tasty, the mushrooms side was so-so and the rapini had a strong taste. Atmosphere: Nice Overall Experience: Will not go back! better restaurants in Vancouver for the price especially if we want pasta, in case you go to Kissa Tanto for Pasta only.... We had to rush through our lamb! Did not have time for Coffee, nor Dessert.

Winnie Yip

Creative dishes and cocktails, executed perfectly with exceptional service. A genuine pleasure to experience.

Took my girlfriend here for our anniversary and it was mediocre at best. Service was good and we liked the decor and ambiance, but all the food was way too salty. It was disappointing, but the service of the staff made up for it.

Rachel Ho

Ambiance of the restaurant was lovely and the food was top notch, definately a place for a special night out. Their wine list had quite a lot to choose from. We ordered the chickpea tofu as a starter and I can't say enough good stuff about it. The layers of flavours was very pronounced and blended together very nicely. The sauce was tangy and savoury and you could taste mushroom throughout. The tofu was made in-house and was blended with chickpea and soy so it wasn't your traditional run of the mill tofu, it has a very nice bite to it. We also ordered the tajarin pasta (not photographed) but that was made with butter and mushrooms. It was reminiscent of those instant egg noodles but had a al-dente like bite to it. The taste was smooth and very buttery. I would definately come back to this place but it wouldn't be your every day visit because it is on the pricier side and parking is often times difficult as it is in the heart of chinatown. The service was top notch as I remember quite distinctly the servers coming to collect our dishes between every dish/cource and wiping our tables. They were very attentive to our water never being empty. Their attentiveness was a conscious effort as they were quite full even as we were there at 9pm. This goes to show their quality of service.

F S

I've been a couple of times now and always had a really good experience. The food is great, the service is excellent, and the cocktails are top notch. Make sure you make a reservation though, they're understandably very busy.

Vic Olak

Over hyped and underwhelming. Waited more than an hour for our food after ordering it. Food is meh and way over priced. Would not return or recommend.

Thomas Stewart

beautiful interior and high class food

Andy M

Amazing meal. Great experience with a small group or someone special. Be sure to reserve a table or get there early.

Stephen Amato

An incredible combination of flavours.

CTO

Great decor, fast friendly staff. Must make reservations, they don't have many walk spaces!! Wide drink selection from beer to sake to cocktails.

D N

Food was good. Service was great. We enjoyed the Spring Salmon and Half Chicken.

Eric Thiessen

I normally am wary of fusion because it's often poorly done. But this is mind blowingly spectacular. Kissa Tanto is worth the hype. You can tell that the chef has an intricate knowledge of all the ingredients from both ethnic palettes. We had the carne cruda, duck agnolotti, pizzoccheri and bottle of Bartier Brothers Gewurztraminer. The dishes were so exciting, thoughtful and flavorful. The little pearl onion petals in the carne cruda, and the umami-packed flavorful, creamy duck in the agnolotti haunt me so that I must go back and try them again. The server was very knowledgeable about wine pairing. Service was great, they let us stay and talk for hours after we were done eating. Very stylish venue. I actually went there 6 months ago so this review is a bit late, but I think it's still representative.

Cj T

Had a great time celebrating an anniversary here. The staff were friendly, prompt and knew their menu/recommendations very well. Drinks were alright, but the food was amazing. As always, the deep fried stuffed olives are a must! Thank you!

Vincent L

Lamb was superb, but some other entrées weren't as good. The portions are incredibly small.

J Ritchie

Energetic atmosphere with amazing food and service.

Melissa Taylor

Good ambience, good food. Cocktails can be better but this Is a very personal opinion, so you may love it.

Scott Poole

Phenomenal!!! Definitely one of the best restaurants I've been too. Had the octopus, mushroom and seafood pastas (we couldn't pick so got both...no regrets there), and the fried whole fish. Can't wait to try more next time! And impeccable service and classic ambiance.

Haissam Souki

Phenomenal room/atmosphere, food amazing/creative (Japanese-Italian who would have thought that would work). Hard to get reservations... Recommend just going and putting your name down for a seat at the bar... Go grab a drink elsewhere why you wait, probably an hour depending when you go, could be longer/shorter. Well worth the wait.

Ali Stewart

It's in the middle of China Town, and when you walk in, it feels like you walk into a different era. It felt like we time-slipped to Showa period in Japan, a kissa with a Western taste, but it's not really a kissa because it's a high end restaurant. It was a very interesting experience being in the restaurant. The service was great and all the staff members were very professional and friendly. We ordered Octopus salad, Tajarin, Ragu, and Lamb, and they were all very great. Unique tastes with some Japanese ingredients. Even though the quality was great and tastes were great, we still thought it was all a little too overpriced. Also the portion size was a little too small for the price. There are a few other restaurants we have been that we would rather pay over $150/meal for. It still is a very interesting place to visit to feel the whole experience. Highly recommended.

Leesa Nguyen

Good food but the place is quite pricey. The selection of drinks is heavily biased towards Europe but the place comes up as Asian. Can be confusing but I also see how it may work for some customers. Would not be my top choice though.

Cool atmosphere, good cocktails and service. I don’t eat meat so maybe the food I ordered just wasn’t representative of the hype but I gave Kissa Tanto two chances and didn’t find it exceptional either time.

John Wang

First I have to note the incredible service, our waiter was not invasive and knew exactly how to explain the menu in a way which guided us but allowed for our own selections. Very friendly yet professional staff all around. Cocktail list was the perfect size and diversity for all pallets. I cant even begin to say enough about the food quality, and presentation, just that the kitchens passion for perfection shows. The room is ambient, cozy, and charming, and very well lit. I prefer a little bit darker but I wouldn't expect that to be the norm!

Paddy Bradley

It's been 2yrs since my first visit. My friend an I knew what we wanted...fried fish...veggies and that wonderful bread. Yes a bottle of wine....

Guillaume Dubus

This place definitely fell ahead of expectations. Japanese and Italian fusion was very unique. Everything was cooked perfectly. Service was impeccable and the atmosphere was really unique. It was somewhat diner like but high end.

Sharon Richards

There was about 20 people waiting in line with us before the restaurant opened for dinner. Had a reservation for 5:30pm and was immediately seated upon opening. The service was insanely good, the waiter took his time explaining the menu and the specials to us, and had suggestions as to how much food to order. The $27 pasta special (some kind of pork and shiso leaf ragu spaghetti) was delicious, as well as the half chicken ($28) with crispy potatoes ($11). Overall a great meal, but I wouldn't say it's the best meal I've ever had. It's a little over hyped and the prices are too high for the location. The meal was kind of ruined by one half of the couple next to us, who kept complaining about how the food was terrible, and they'd rather eat a burger. The tables are close together, so my husband and I had to awkwardly listen to their conversation for the entire meal...

David Lau

There is a currently $50 dollar fee for not canceling reservations 48h in advance. While an understandable attempt to deter no shows, can't help but feel as an attempt to profit/punish potential customers during these challenging times.

Great food. Four on six sour is the best cocktail I have ever had. Beautiful space.

Carol Ann Lim

This is a MUST. The decor, the music, the food - unreal. The wait can be long, but you can wait with dignity and a drink in hand.

Amy W

Great food, great atmosphere. Overall, a good experience for fine dining. Good service. HOWEVER! Avoid the mashed potato served with fish roe on a toasted baguette, it tasted like instant mashed potato from a cardboard box with the cardboard taste. ALSO! The bearded short and bald gentleman (who I assumed was the assistant manager or something) was very rude to me when I arrived early for my reservation asking if I could be seated earlier. He could’ve let me know nicely that I should wait, but he instead asked if I could see or not that they’re busy and full. Yes, I do have eyes. Also, this gentleman took off his mask (not even wearing a face shield) and was talking loudly with patrons at the bar. I thought the indoor mask mandate was still enforced in BC. If you’re checking patrons for their IDs and vaccine passports, shouldn’t you follow your own safety guidelines?

Jeff Dittmer

Absolutely incredible experience! The octopus salad was unreal and an absolute necessity when you check this place out. I highly recommend ordering their cocktails too. The service was unreal, everyone is so attentive, an empty plate will not sit on your table for more than two minutes. I recommend booking very early in advance or wait in line 15-30 minutes before opening. It gets busy. Fast.

Jun Kang

Excellent food, excellent service, reasonable prices, great wine and cocktails. Say hi to Celia and Hugo

Derrick B

Exceptional Japanese food! I absolutely loved everything about this restaurant. If you’re looking for a unique high-end dining experience then definitely come here. Every course was absolutely beautiful and delicious, with perfect sake accompanying the meal. I had a dessert cocktail with espresso and white chocolate that had absolutely to die for. Definitely give this place a try!

Sarah DeMaere

A must go to restaurants!! Can't go wrong from drinks to food and desserts.

Heard about this place from many friends Decided to give it a chance Service was excellent, Food presentation was nice. Cocktail was good and reasonable price. Noting really really good and nothing really bad. Also really like the design of the place.

Jason Hale

Cocktails were amazing, and so was the food. Service was top notch. Love the ambiance.

Pauline Chan

Perfect experience. Awesome food and very attentive service. I am glad a friend of mine told me about this gem a few days ago. Don’t be shy if you try to book online and it’s sold out. It’s possible to seat at the bar on a first come / first served basis. My friend told me to take our chances arriving early. I was “mentally prepared” to seat by the bar but we were luck to have a table at 6pm provided we would leave before 8.30 as the table was already reserved for others. It was plenty of time for us to try different plates and sip excellent Italian wine. We will, definitely, be back! ????????????

We are here randomly before a Canucks game on a Saturday, and it was a really busy night. So much so that we were placed at the bar, and in order to make up space had us scoot over, but gave us a little appetizer on the house. The atmosphere is nice inside. The wait staff is knowledgable and nice. The food is top tier. The half chicken is the most moist and delicious chicken I've had in my life. Their sablefish is really good, as well. It's definitely pricey so come prepared. Also, it is downtown so parking will be tough to find.

David Eaton

Excellent food and drinks, unique, historic atmosphere, relatively inexpensive for quality.

John Whang

Delicious fusion, I was not expecting anything this delicious. Daniel was wonderful and made the experience 5 star. He had amazing reccomendations and impeccable timing. Little pricey but worth it for the quality and service. Will go again. We ate the carne to start, was a tartare it was amazing. Ate the duck pasta and Wagyu beef followed by the yozu cream dessert. I would reccomend all of it.

Moe Alsamarrai

One of the best beef tartare I’ve ever had. Cocktails were also amazing especially the salted plum

Sean Z

A wonderful meal at a wonderful restaurant (not going to comment on the surrounding area). Everything we ordered was excellent. Service was 5 stars. I requested a booth and we got one. My partner isn't into octopus or ikura but she rated this meal as one of the best ones she's had in Vancouver (and we've been around). We had the octopus salad, salmon neck (special), eggplant, and squid ink pasta with shrimp and crab. Definitely coming back for more!

Zulinda Jones

Amazing fusion dishes marrying some interesting food combos. I was a little skeptic all reading the menu but was not disappointed. Delicious. Will return.

Sy Bor Wong

I had a reservation tonight which I made at least 6 weeks ago for a special occasion. Showed up and there’s a sign on the door that they are closed to being short staffed due to covid. Sorry to hear that, but I should have received a phone call to cancel my reservation! I had been looking forward to trying this place for ages. Obviously extremely disappointed that the restaurant did NOT call to cancel the reservation. If I could give less stars I would. Unacceptable service regarding reservations. Waste of Uber rides too.

Bony Banerjee

Such a great little place to eat or meet some at the bar (always make a reservation!).

Johnny Hoang

Everything was perfect. The atmosphere was great. The service was great. The Wagyu tartar was amazing. The smoked octopus salad might have been our favourite. The sausage Ragu and lasagna were both delicious as well. I can't recommend this place enough.

Shane Lobsinger

Seriously amazing staff!! The food was incredible, as were the drinks. Wonderful ambience, and overall experience :)

James Wong

Amazing service coupled with a delicious meal. Appetizers: Octopus Salad was light and crispy Tonno Mantecato is interesting: the bruschetta with tobiko was yummy and the "mashed potatoes" interesting, but I didn't think they worked together Dinner (highlights of the night): sablefish was great, the chili added a hint of heat, and the mushrooms and currants gave the dish a great flavour. The lamb was flavourful, mine had a vein through it which made it a bit chewy but overall a tasty meal Dessert: Panna Cotta was the best dessert, but the tiramisu was good as well.

Jacqueline Mena

Great vibe. Food is interesting, but good.

Paul Hertz

Love the cocktails. We were seated at the bar and had a great experience. Love the fish crudo appetizer. We did not try any mains as there were too many good appies.

Alex Murdock

Great setup with a bar and restaurant which harkens back to the 1940s. Super bartenders. They know their stuff. Great food. Was doing a bit of a restaurant hop so tried to save room and only went with two appetizers: the beef carne cruda, and the tonno mantecato. Get these. They are fantastic. As others have said, get there early and grab the non-reserved seats at the bar. The reservation wait is loooong. Well worth it.

Craig Riehl

Very good quality of food preparation.

Yulimuh Farthoe

Great ambiance, incredible service and even better cocktails.

Emi Hg

Awesome fusion well worth the drive excellent service

Anton Ego

Yes it's as good as everyone says it is.

John Morris

the food is ok , i need it to be a bit more hot

Alison Mitchell

Drinks and dessert were spectacular and worthy of 5 stars. For food we ordered the pickles, olives, mushroom pasta, salmon, and celeriac agedashi. The pasta and celeriac were next level. However the rest of the dishes were good but did not meet the expectations for a splurge restaurant. There are other restaurants in this class I would go back to first. Overall enjoyable and worth trying.

Elaine Siu

My friends and I were excited to dine at Kissa Tanto. I made a reservation online and received a confirmation text and email, and another automated text to confirm if we were still coming to the restaurant. We arrived for our reservation, the door was locked. Checked google, it said they are open. Called the restaurant, no answer and the automated voice message said they are closed on Mondays. Why waste our time like this... management could have updated their online schedule on the website. We could have booked for another day. 0/10.

C CL

This is my favorite restaurant, not just in Vancouver but… anywhere! It’s always my first day off stop when I’m here working and feels so special and elegant. You can forget about everything else and just enjoy the company, ambience, music, flowing drinks (love those special drink specific ice cubes) and incredible food. The flavors and ingredients are so unique and delicious. I’ve had some really memorable meals here and can’t wait to come back.

Jaime Ayres

Amazing food and cute experience. The pasta and bread were unreal.

Derek Miura

the food and service were awesome. But i was really turned off by the smell of the restaurant.

Chris Kyprianou

The staff and ambiance is lovely. Bathroom was extremely unclean. Drinks are good and the food was good. Portions are small for sharing unless everyone just likes to have a taste. Nothing to write home about or recommend to a friend. The staff and flavour get 3 stars! If it was just based on that I would give 5 stars but dinning out is so much more.

Kate White

Excellent staff. Enjoyable evening and amazing tasting food.

jean laven

Pricey, trendy with a to quote Kissa Tanto "Japanese-Italian" cuisine. Some days a lineup forms pre opening hours. Juke is a far better well rounded experience.

One of the top restaurants in Vancouver. Always a memorable experience from the food to the staff to the ambiance. It's got the trifecta. My fave.

Delicious food, fun atmosphere and friendly, down to earth staff. Lots of vegetarian options as well. It is a bit on the pricier side relative to portion sizes but perfect spot for a date night or night out with friends. Also liked how it's location is discreet and tucked nicely into the existing neighbourhood.

This place is so swank, which was so much fun! It is very much like stepping in to a jazz club in 1950’s Tokyo. Our waitress was incredibly nice and gave us excellent recommendations. She also told us we deserved this meal since we’d done Grouse Grind earlier in the day! We got the seasonal pickles and the Carne Cruda to start. Pickles were all unique and flavorful. Good rule if you like pickles, always get the pickles if they’re on the menu. The chef takes great care to pick a variety that will not disappoint. The beef tartar under a mountain of parmesan was a salty, savory mix of textures and flavors. Then we got two pastas, the special with clams, which was amazing, and the Tsukune Agnolotti, a chicken pasta. It was pasta stuffed with chicken in a minimal chicken broth and soy sauce. Sooo good. Then we got a zucchini side with root veggies, parm, and walnuts which was a mix of salty flavors and textures. For desert of course we got tiramisu, with soy cream, which was perfect.

Dylan Jones

Simply the best restaurant I have ever been to

Wanda McTavish

The service was great. However, the pasta was a little bit too salty for our taste.

Safya Rose

one of my favourites in the city hands down!! love being inside this space and the food takes it to the next level.

Always a great experience. Applause for the lovely service team and the fantastic kitchen team!

Yulanda Chow

Unusual but really good and interesting food. Menu is based on share plates. Expensive but worth it.

This is what it feels like if you walk into a 60s Japanese jazz bar. The highlight was tajarin - a creamy, buttery, mushroom and miso cured yolk pasta. I was hesitant ordering it, but it was fantastic. You have to take a bite to understand, and pics doesn't do it justice. The duck agnolotti was good too. All their dishes are Italian Japanese inspired (including their cocktails). I would come back again. Yum.

One of my all time dining favourites! Funky decor, fun & super knowledgeable staff and seriously delicious food! Beautifully crafted menu, the flavours in every dish work so harmoniously together. I always ask their maitre D “Ronnie” for a tasting menu and I am never disappointed. Great way to try a few different dishes. Cocktails here are amazing too. Their Yuzu Martini (named Salaryman on their menu) is a MUST. Perfectly balanced cocktail with amazing Yuzu flavours, to die for! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Easily one of the best meals I have ever had. My sister got me a GC for my birthday. With 3 gfs in tow, I’ve never had a happier food baby. I will definitely be coming back. Food is great, desserts are delightful, cocktails delicious and service was on point. We loved the udon carbonara so much, we ordered a second round for the table. 100% will dine here again.

Amazing food. The eggplant side dish is something you must try.

They say this Japanese Italian fusion. This seemed to mean italian ingredients prepared in a Japanese style. Which means? Tasty. The food pairs nicely with their great cocktails and a nice wine list The space is very pretty.

15/10 service, each staff made it feel like they were invested in our experience. 10/10 food, their take on Japanese-Italian fusion made for a delicately tasting experience. The favourite for the night was the appetizer, octopus salad. The parsley and chili sauce was to die for in contrast to the crunchy, tender but chewy texture of the octupus. For the entrees, was sablefish, risotto (featured) and polenta - personally leaned towards the polenta due to its use of the yuzu balm adding a citrusy element to this heavy dish. For dessert, the tiramisu was so light and fluffy with the soy whip and the added sweetness with the plum wine was a nice touch.

This place is unreal! I didn't take photos of the food because they wouldn't have done it justice. Everything here is beautiful; the cocktails, the decor, the details, the knowledge of the staff and especially the food. Go here. You won't regret it

Awfully overrated. Pricey. Portions too small to share although suggested sharing. Tastes underwhelming. Decor is nostalgic and drinxxx pretty stiff but doesn't make up for the overall underperformance.
