This Restaurant is classified in the category of Steak house.
Great service, great atmosphere, but prices are very high. Definitely the place you would go for a steak experience but not your regular night out place. Slightly overpriced and blocking emergency exit with a cart, otherwise would definitely get 5 stars!
It was my friends 16th birthday and the service and food was top quality. Our waiter, Chad was so amazing. He made sure we were well taken care of and had the best experience possible. 10/10
A Vancouver classic, this is one of the best traditional steakhouses I've experienced. From the impeccable service to the top quality cuts and great wine selection, the wood fired grill tops off the classic steakhouse experience. The cheese bread is a must have!
For sure our #1 favorite dinner spot in the City!! The ambience is amazing and the service and food can't be beat! You must order the cheese bread and caesar salad (made table side).
Exactly what you want from a steakhouse! great food, ambience and amazing service
Almost The best steak I’ve ever had. It was perfectly done. My husband and I went there for my birthday dinner and we had a great time. Our server was fun guy !
The dining experience is quite classy, the food is delicious and presented in an elegant manor. I don't mind paying a premium for good quality food but the wine prices were absurdly high.
Best steakhouse in Vancouver. Has a nice traditional steakhouse vibe. Keep it simple with the New York strip. Don't waste your money on the "famous cheese toast" or whatever. The caesar salad isn't bad, and they make it table-side.

Delicious food and good service.
Amazing food and amazing service. They have all the protocols and health measures in place to ensure you have a safe environment to still enjoy a dinner outside.
Dont fall for the “free” cheese bread.. 15$

Love coming here both for lunch and dinner with my clients. Amazing atmosphere and services. Give their rib steak a try - its amazing!
I started going to Hy's in 1964 when I was a kid, shortly after it opened. It's been our extended family's default go-to for special occasions ever since as we're big fans of some of their signature dishes, and it's never failed to impress. Till tonight. Maybe it was an off-night, but the 10 of us all registered various levels of disappointment with the food and/or service. The garlic bread was soft and soggy, not toasted as is typical; the Caesar Salad lacked bite and was average at best; the bone-in Rib steak was cooked perfectly but looked smaller than 32oz, plus was more heavily marbled with fat than usual; and requests for beverages had to be made repeatedly. I'll go back again because of our historic loyalty and my hope that this experience was an anomaly, but a few of us murmured that if this was our first visit we wouldn't return.
The layout of this place is pretty cool, but I'm giving this place an overall 2/5 for how much we spent (close to $600 between 3 people) vs the actual quality we got out of it. The washroom was also a 2/5 for cleanliness. The toilets weren't flushing very well in either washroom, and they both had a slight odour to them. Our server didn't seem like she wanted to be there. Not necessarily in a negative way, it's just that she was really passive, didn't smile much, and didn't seem like she wanted to connect with us like what most servers do at upscale restaurants. She seemed to talk more with other tables though. The cheese bread, mushrooms, oysters, and bourbon cake were great. The dry aged steak and mashed potatoes were a 1/5 for me. The sides were 100% fat, and the taste of the meal was just a bit average compared to what I'm use to in that price range. We didn't end up finishing the steak, which speaks volumes for the quality. The rest of the food that we ordered was pretty average (crab cakes, lobster, scallops, shrimp cocktail). It's a cool place for drinks though, and the people at the front/bar were really friendly. The drinks were good. We left a bit disappointed. I do however highly recommend the cheese bread. It was the only thing that we ordered which stood out.
Hy's Steakhouse was a wonderful treat. The food and drinks were excellent, but my favourite part was the staff. They took care of me and made me feel like I was part of their team. I highly recommend it.
Dinner
They have wonderful steaks and the Caesar salad experience is amazing. Also, great sides. One of my favorite spots in the city!
Everything about my visit was perfect. My table was ready as soon as I walked in, every member of the staff was friendly and efficient, the bartender and the chef were killing it. I can legitimately say the beef wellington was the best meal I've had in my life. I will never not go here when I'm in Vancouver.
Went for wife's birthday, and left disappointed. There was a bug in the drink we ordered to start. Apparently it got into the mint, which didn't look washed. The water tasted a bit tepid as well. The cheese toast was good and much better than the steaks. The filet was bland, and the New York strip was tough. We were given the wrong sides at first for the steaks. I wrote it was my wife's birthday in the reservation and restaurants usually at least mention it, but nothing here. At least they comped the toast for the bug in the drink, which was the least expensive thing we ordered. We ordered takeout in the past, and the meat was just as bad then but thought it was because it was takeout. However, it seems like this is just the regular quality.
Service was amazing, food was disappointing for its price. There was hair on my calamari, deep fried with the squid and the medium-rare came out as just rare. Both were taken off the bill. Overall very disappointing.
Great place for a nice steak downtown. I sat at the bar and had a great experience. I was the only person bat the bar, so obviously received great service. Food: the steak was great, cooked perfectly, lightly seasoned. The potatoes leaved a bit to be desired, just plain old mashed potatoes, very light buttery taste, no garlic or garnishment.
My team was planning to have a team lunch at Hy's. We have 13 people. We made a phone call and the front desk who picked up the phone immediately refused us. We didn't give up and asked her to try to talk to her manager. She refused us again saying that there is no manager to talk to. What a great service from this "high-end" Restaurant! Not recommended! We booked KEG instead and the waiter from KEG arranged our team lunch right away by talking to his manager.
Great service, delicious food! Bf and I love the charcoal taste of their steaks, and they made them just the way we wanted them, medium rare on bf’s porterhouse and medium well on my New York strip ( steak Neptune)! The banana foster (dessert) is a must try. Matt even reminded us to take videos and photos when he’s making it in front of us. They gave us a candle because it’s my birthday :)
Going there my whole life and now my children are to ???? Edit; Pickup takeout during covid and it was a miserable disaster. Anniversary with my wife dinner in the car with Hy’s and a view turned into no cutlery, steak was hot, potatoes were hot and everything that was not for (Hy’s at home) was disgustingly cold. So sad we wasted $200 on that... cactus has been perfect on the takeout so far. Hy’s not so much.
I loved the atmosphere here! 4 stars were given however because the people at the gate was not friendly (Not the valet but once you get in)
Great service and great dishes!
The Caesar salad was a pleasant surprise but the overall experience was a little underwhelming.
Great food and service. The porterhouse and Hester Creek Judge was a great pairing
My boyfriend and I were very excited to eat at Hy's, and planned to enjoy the happy hour menu on his rare day off from work. He loves the cheese toast, which holds much nostalgia from his memories as a child eating here with his family. We set aside a day, drove from far away, and spent a long time circling around for parking. When we arrived, the host told us that there was no happy hour. This came as a huge disappointment, because the happy hour menu is still available online. We seemed confused, and the host, seeing our expressions, didn't seem like she valued our service enough to offer good alternatives. She hesitatingly told us that they had 'limited seating' in a pretentious tone that made us seem like we weren't good enough to dine there. My boyfriend and I decided that because of the way she made us feel, we would dine elsewhere. Although we may not be the typical clientele (i.e., middle-aged business people dressed in suits) we were not going to 'cheap out' in dining here, and did not appreciate this assumption. It felt as if the host thought that losing our service did not matter. We proceeded to go to omakase at Raisu and spend our time and money elsewhere. I recommend this alternative to anyone mistreated by the staff at Hy's.
One of the best steak houses in the city. Start with with table side Caesar Salad you wont regret it. Pair it with the Cheese Toast that is a must. We had the Porterhouse and the Bone-In Rib Steak and both were melt in your mouth fantastic. The slow roasted half chicken was also very good. We ended it with some amazing deserts. The crème Brule was a favorite and the tableside Banana Foster puts on quite the show. The service was top notch and the ambiance was great as always. Do not come here with a budget in mind, just enjoy the culinary experience.
Amazing as always. Lives up to its reputation time and time again. We enjoyed new year's Eve dinner and never felt rushed or pressured to speed up our pace even though the restaurant was packed. Knowledgeable staff make the experience that much better. Recommend the cheese toast to start, the table side Caesar salad, a filet with all the sides is a must and end with bananas Foster prepared right in front of you!
Another great meal at Hy's. Cheese toast was perfect, porterhouse steak was cooked to an excellent medium rare. Service was on par as always.
Best steakhouse in Vancouver. Tableside Cesar and Bananas Foster are a must ! Service is expertly judged and never intrusive and very on point. Love it here !
Food quality and service are top notch. The dark atmosphere may not suit all tastes but a very classy dining experience.
What a magical and special place this is. Everything is just amazing from the appetizer crab cake to the seafood and steaks. Make sure you leave room for the cheesecake! You get very personal service and never was my drink or water half empty before they came by to fill it again. Just awesome service and food.

Our server and table chef was very nice and attentive. The food, Beef Wellington and Steak Diane, were prepared to perfection. The roses I had delivered were on our table when we arrived and they even wrote Congratulations on our dessert plates. They knew I was planning to propose.
All time favourite. Food, service, ambience and experience all 7 stars. Love the cheese toast ????
A warm and classic atmosphere, decorated with paintings and bookshelves. Excellent place for a romantic date. Delicious quality meat cooked to perfection, every bite is so juicy and tender. I would highly recommend the rib steak and the lamp chop was exquisite as well.
Was space a very nice atmosphere. The Stafford very knowledgeable about their menu. my filet was a little chewy and equivalent to the quality of the keg which was disappointing to me for the price I paid. But the cheese bread as all the other comments say, was amazing
Meal type
The atmosphere was nice, the beef Wellington is not as good as my expected and it was over cooked. And oysters were super small. Not worth it.
From outside it does not look like much. On the inside it is elegant and classy. The service is impeccable and the food is excellent. Some would say that the pricing is a bit on the high side but with the service and the food make up for it. Try the steak with the special sauce and have a Ceasars salad made at the table. You will love it.
Always good times at Hy's for lunch, a Whiskey Sour cocktail and a Strip loin Steak ???? sandwich w appetizer greens salad prior. Fine food top notch service!
If your thinking to go out to a great restaurant with great food and service, don't overthinking it, Hys is the place. Food is just delicious, and as usual in Vancouver you have an option for everyone. They have fine steaks as well as vegetarian meatloaf or vegan bowl. It is just grate. Also the cheese toast is definitely a most to order. Service is great, everyone is very polite and ready to help you. Cesar salad is a great show to order, it is made in your table. My favorite was the toast and the french onion soup. But I've hear the porterhouse is one of its kind. Love this restaurant
Shabby from beginning to end. The great thing about Hy's is that they are consistent. Unfortunately the only thing they do consistently is being sub-par on every conceivable level. From the rude person that took my booking, the questionable stains on the wall by our table to the famous cheese toast, which is exactly that, just cheese on toast, no Hy's interpretation, or artisan cheese, just plain cheese on toast. The steak was good. Having eaten everywhere from Michelin star in London to street food in Delhi I can only imagine this establishment is run by buffoons and simpletons. The room is what I would describe as "nice from afar but far from nice. Like the popular boy at school that turned into a divorced alcoholic the whole place possesses an air of the has been about it. The only thing they seem to be on top of are the prices. It's bad pub food purporting to be gourmet. Pull the other one it's got bells on. This is a real review, don't blame me if you go and find everything I said is true.
The service was excellent!! I love the atmosphere of the restaurant. We ordered cheese bread, Caesar salad, bone in rib steak and lamb. The cheese bread was very tasty, Caesar sad was the best one I’ve ever had, steak was a bit dried and lamb was a bit salty. But all the dishes were fresh and delicious.
Wonderful experience for our Anniversary dinner. Manager Phil was the best, accommodating from seats to meals with dietary concerns. Quiet, classy restaurant a bit different from your typical steakhouses that are noisy and open aired. We had a shared steak platter with table side service, our waiter was patient and great with all the questions as well. Seem like all the staff here are well presented and we'll versed. Thank you Hy's
Everything was great from the very first minute till the last. The food was predictably superb, but Maddy made the evening go super smoothly by taking great care of us. Thanks!
Great food with premium quality of food. French onion soup was really good, while the Wellington beef was the best I have ever tried. Incredible service and great desserts make for one of the best restaurants in Vancouver. Very cozy and unique dining area.

This is the top steakhouse in Vancouver. Always perfectly cooked steaks and great service.
High end steak house, juicy tender steak done to perfection. We really enjoyed the meal. Too bad, they don't have valet parking due to covid19.
It’s one of the best steak in vancouver. Only place that still cook on charcoal. The cheese toast is to die for. The rest is always solid!
Great steak house, it's a classic! Friendly staff, our waiter Dan was amazing with our children! We love Hy's in Toronto as well.
Our team had a large staff party in the VIP room upstairs in October. Everything was great, but some of the dishes being served in mass were missing garnishes or even important ingredients. Such as the carpaccio, served with parmesan on some and lacking on others. Having spent many years in commercial kitchens I know it can be tough to nail a perfect plate every time, but missing the parmesan on a carpaccio is nearly inexcusable. Still, the lamb course was cooked to perfection and every other aspect of the night was awesome. I can say with confidence the staff is great. They just knew the right time to refill glasses, or replace cutlery. Overall a pretty great experience, considering the hefty price point.
Lovely environment for a celebration or just dinner out ! Salad was made in front of our eyes and service was very great, very down to earth. Had the filet and would recommend the bake potato or mash potato instead of fries as the side as they were nothing special. My partner got a steak and it was a bit too charred for his liking but still thoroughly enjoyed the meal ☺️ would come back!!
Hy's Steakhouse really does well in representing the steak side of Cowtown. We went on a whim to try out their happy hour, only to be entranced by our own hunger to the dinner side of the restaurant. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and the steaks in general, and every recommendation was spot on - great cheese bread! Ordered the Hy's Prime Rib Steak, came perfectly medium rare and tasted as great as a well dry aged steak would taste - the perfect char holding all the flavor you can ask for. The flambé'd banana desert was made table-side and a nice and impressive way to end my meal. The overall ambiance of the restaurant was great, and the staff were constantly cheerful and on the top of things. Decor and atmosphere matched the restaurant's higher end steakhouse vibe, although some tables, including ours, might have been a bit dark/ not well lit up enough for my taste.
The burger is too salty. It was also dripping in water which made the buns saugy. The cheese toasts are too cheesy. The apple crumble is pretty good. Not a burger worth that price.
Still a great steakhouse. Excellent cuts of meat and always cooked to perfection. Professional waitstaff who are knowledgeable of the menu and capable of giving helpful suggestions (i.e., not just upselling) on what to order. Tossup between this place and Gotham for my favourite steakhouse in the city... Been going here for a decade now and never had a bad experience.
It's Hy's. Enough said. The golden standard of steak and service quality. It's pricey, but not one time have I ever walked out of here saying it wasn't worth it.
Subpar food with STK prices. Steak was sad, cheese bread was disgusting. Pop had no free refills. The only reason it gets 2 stars is because the fries were pretty good and the bartender was really nice.
Awesome service and top notch food! Table side Caesar and Banana's Foster was as fun to watch as it was delicious!
A very traditional, old school steak house. This is our go to restaurant for special occasions. Service and food was just okay. We didn't finish the prawns as they were overcooked. I don't drink alcohol. They don't offer a non alcoholic red wine. I brought my own and were charged a $50 corkage fee! A first! I don't need to visit again. We will probably try it again though as we've been going here for years and it is a favorite of my husbands.
They made my rib eye to perfection. My wife's beef wellington was also so good, I should have ordered that too. The craft beer was nice and fruity, just the way I like it. Our waitress and servers were on point all the time, excellent service!
Excellent food and amazing service! Very knowledgeable staff regarding the entire menu

Always a wonderful dining experience! Thanks!
Food, atmosphere, and service are wonderful! Their cheese toast and caesar salad are must have appetizers.
Ok so its been a few weeks after my flu has passed and the hubs is ready to collect on his birthday dinner. Before deciding on coming here we had another place in mind, the regular place Black and Blue. I did my research, i looked online, i asked around...then i started to worry. The feedback i got back from my friends were not very good. I even had one friend saying that her meal was over 300$ and it was only comparable to the keg or worse. Don't get me wrong I love the keg, but this is top dollar steak so i expect a top dollar meal! We started with the calamari, tenderloin carpaccio, and black & blue ahi tuna. We enjoyed all 3, however there are two items i can compare to Black & blue. At Black & Blue the carpaccio and calamari is a better deal (cheaper), more flavourful, not as plain as you would get here (they have capers on their carpaccio!!! Also its all in the seasoning). At Black & blue The plump calamari fills the plate here it just fills a bowl, here the carpaccio breaks when you try to pull it off the place because its way too thin and doesn't have enough substance to be able to eat a full piece at a time. It drives me crazy! I'm not sure if would come back for appies. I think i would just go for the kill and order the steak. I'm not sure if my friends visited on an off day (which would bother me, because the restaurants i always frequent are the ones that are consistent...consistency in service and food quality are very important to me) but the porterhouse was AMAZING. It was the best piece of meat that ive had in a long time! And i frequently eat steak. The short loin was juicy, succulent, tender, the tenderloin was melt in your mouth tender and juicy. IT was so good i cannot NOT write a review about it. I am excited to be able to come here again and praying that it will be just as delicious the next time. The one thing that really bothered me about this place is that we arrived at 15:00 planning on doing dinner as well as happy hour, unfortunately unlike other places for happy hour you can ONLY order off the happy hour menu and not anything else. We had to go back and walk around the mall for another 2 hours before we could eat and we were already hungry. I wish they would have specified that online. Happy hour isn't worth it if its so restricted and the only thing we wanted on that menu was the black and blue tuna. We ended up just paying the full price during dinner. I would come back again, but not during happy hour because i love eat too much.
The food wad very good and our server was very kind to me and my family
Great restaurant, staff, and service. The waiters are very professional, attentive, and polite. They go the extra distance which is usually not seen in Vancouver’s dining scene. The table side service is well orchestrated as well. One of my favourite spots in Vancouver. Remember to get the Banana Foster and leave happy!
Amazing steak!!! We had the 20oz bone in rib steak cooked perfectly with an amazing crust. But everything else was mediocre, the cauliflower gratin really could use a revamp. It was fairly bland and I have had better cauliflower gratin at a Mexico buffet. The lamb was ok as well would of been nice if they could of nailed the same crust as on our steak. Honestly the sides menu needs a complete revamp who even eats Brussels sprouts? We will definitely be back but just for the steak and fries nothing else.
Worst service ever!! I went there for lunch today. 4 tables including mine. 10 minutes after sited, finally got menu and water. Food serving took forever and served burnt cheese toast. Steak was okay, but definitely over priced. For the time being I was there, the waitress DID NOT came to my table AT ALL. She did not ask how the food was nor if there was anything I needed. When I was leaving, she saw me and walked by me but did NOT say bye. What a service for $100 lunch!!!! Thanks for the worst lunch Jenna.
Wonderful steak. Great atmosphere. Impeccable service. Great place for a Birthday lunch! Thank you Hy's we will be back soon!
A great restaurant experience. Perfect service. Perfectly cooked and delicious food.
I've been to quite a few steak houses, very impressed with service and the rib eye was done to perfection.
Service
Although we were a bunch of teenagers, some of whom probably didn't dress as appropriate as expected, we received the same amount of care and respect from the staff and it was a wonderful all-rounder experience. The waitress was extremely patient and friendly and suggested the special steak in the house thing which was an absolute banger. Atmosphere was fire and tables were safely spread out and we have a comfortable and enjoyable time. 10/10 would come again and burn our friend's wallet for fun (jk).
Tableside experiences were fun and interactive. Cozy and delicious dishes.
Service was amazing from the moment we stepped into the restaurant. We got seated upstairs in a secluded booth and our waitress was very helpful she gave suggestions on cocktails and which cut of steak to get. Steak was amazingggg. I really liked the buttered corn as a side. Only complaint I have is my friends steak came out VERY rare and had to be sent back twice however the waitress was extremely nice/apologetic about it so it wasn’t even a big deal.
Listen to the other reviews and avoid the cheese toast. You can make better with your eyes closed. But other wise exceptional service. They have a cool window to the kitchen and you can watch each steak being masterfully prepared. Table side service is neat, try it! The high prices are defiantly for the service.
An excellent meal and perfect drinks every time. A must for special occasions and when we want to treat ourselves!
Great ambience and our server Richard was absolutely amazing. Would love to visit again next time we’re in town.
Hy’s is a reliable goto if you are interested in a high end steakhouse experience. Their famous cheese bread and all of the appetizers are classic and well done. When you move to their famous made at table side Caesar salad it’s likewise a great experience and made with high-quality, fresh ingredients. Selection of meat is amazing of course as you would expect from a place like this and they cook it over a Mesquite Grill in the back where you can watch it being cooked By a professional in real time if you choose. The ambiance is classic old-school steakhouse which may or may not be appealing to some, However certainly is an old school experience. The servers really know their stuff and all of the menu items in detail and can make excellent recommendations. The wine list is extensive and the cocktails are made perfectly and the liquor is high-end. It says central as you can get located in downtown Vancouver and it appears that they have implemented excellent Covid precautions with widely separated tables as well as plexiglass barriers throughout. Overall a safe and delicious dining experience not to be missed.
If, you never been to a very expensive restaurant, this place is it. Service is top notch and food was great. You are paying for the experience. That being said, you can get the same elsewhere and pay half the cost.
Get the beef Wellington!! Trust me!! I literally didn't even need my teeth it was so tender
The caesar salad and banana foster are a must. Frankly speaking, they were better than the steaks for my partner and I. Overall, the atmosphere was nice, and all the servers were very nice and polite as well.
Amazing food, amazing service, great ambiance. Thank you for having us! ????
Fantastic steak and sides, dessert. Cannot go wrong with the cheesy bread. And the cocktails are great.
excellent environment, friendly service and decent food
Hy's truly blew me away with it's amazing food and service. Even classics such as toast and cheesecake we're well above other restaurants in this price range. Their service was not perfect but definitely made you feel welcomed and comfortable. Well worth the money will come again.
Best steak I had in my life. The service was excellent. The steak was very tasty and very rich in flavour. The onion soup was nothing special. Overall, I enjoyed it thoroughly and I strongly recommend it although it’s very expensive and not for me to eat often hahahaha
One of the best steaks that we've had! Great to see that not much has changed in this place. Consistent great service. Super attentive, but not overbearing (timing is impeccable). Ceasar salad prepared at tableside, an old world tradition kept alive here. Chad our server was so personable. Highly recommended!
12th anniversary dinner! Thank you Carissa for a wonderful evening. Excellent food, great service. Tristan, thank you for the extra ice cream ????.
Delicious steakhouse. Atmosphere is abit dark but the steaks are amazing
Hy's Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar is one of Vancouver's best steakhouses. But not only for their steaks (which are delicious), but they are the best because of their cheese bread. If I had to go there and only eat their cheese bread, I'd be a happy person. I'd totally recommend going to Hy's Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar for their steaks, but when you're there you HAVE to get the cheese bread, you'll thank me.
Great selection of bourbons and whiskey. Cheese bread is amazingly delicious. Spinach salad is better than Cesar salad.
All the steaks were cooked perfectly! The fillet was incredibly tender and seasoned well. We had the porterhouse, Angus bone in rib steak, and beef wellington. I highly recommend the porterhouse and would order it again next time.
Service was exceptional and our family's steaks were all good, except mine. Mine came out completely overdone and, instead of Chicago, it came out burnt to a crisp and well done inside. They offered to remake it, but this time, instead of medium-rare, it came out practically blue with no caramelization at all. While the rest of the meal was spectacular, a steakhouse should not mess up the star item, twice. For the price, this was extremely disappointing to have happen.
The steak was incredible and the service is always that of a 5 star restaurant. We've never had a bad experience at Hy's.
food was really good 100% would come back. our waiter chris q was the best. ask for him if you come, he is hilarious :) best salad tosser and dancer. very entertaining 10/10 would recommend
Too expensive. Food is good, but nor impressive. Crew is nice and the place is beautiful
This place was amazing! My boyfriend and I came here to celebrate our anniversary and we felt so well taken care of. Customer service was impeccable shout out to Justin who went far and beyond with the service he provided. Aside from that the food was incredible and absolutely delicious. We highly recommend the Caesar salad and there secret menu Mac n cheese dish. We also ordered rib eye steak just mouth watering. !!
Service
The service and atmosphere is second to none in Vancouver, also very impressed with our server Blair. Not only did he make great recommendations but he is quite funny too! The food was amazing, cheese toast sounds like it would be boring but oh my was I wrong, the bread was amazingly fluffy and completely covered in perfectly melted cheese. The steak was not the best steak I've ever had but pretty far up there, top three for sure. I ordered the 32oz rib steak and my wife got the filet mignon with a lobster tail. Both were cooked perfectly with that something extra that a proper charcoal grill brings. For dessert the pistachio creme brulee was also amazing and a perfect way to finish off the meal. We will definitely come back and next time I'm getting the porterhouse.
The lunch beef dip is too much food for one sitting. I found this out the hard way. It's fantastic, but I had to be rolled out in a wheelbarrow.
We came here for celebrating our friends first pro MMA debut fight. Everything from the service to the perfectly cooked surf and turf was on point. The manager there was very accommodating. Truly one of the best steakhouses I’ve visited in downtown Vancouver. ????????????????
Good atmosphere, nice and professional staffs, more importantly the great food. I have cheese toast which is very nice. Then beef wellington which is really good and I enjoyed it very much. The beef is perfectly cooked according to my request. Will come back with girl friend next time and try something else.
Lives up to its reputation. I have no words. The service is what you would expect, the quality of the food is what you would expect. Yes you pay for it and yes you get it. Find a reason to celebrate and come here. Oh and never leave without getting the Cheese Toast that would be sacrilegious!
Very old vancouver history restaurant. Open on 1962 not much has not changed very old and very posh. Hight end service with high end prices. Amazing Cesar salad made at table was 5 star. It is a must do but but have the wallet full or space on your credit card
Great environment, steak was delicious! But the best thing i had was their signiture cheese bread. Delicious
It pains me to have to write this. Hy's was my go to steak restaurant in Vancouver. Dennis the manager helped change that. Lately the last few times I have noticed quality starting to decline. Last week we went a a group of 6. 3 of us chose the 110$ rib steak on the bone. 2 asked for medium rare.. . I ask for slightly more rare than the other 2 steaks. When the steaks finally made it over mine was medium well while the other 2 were medium. No sweat it happens right? They agreed it was over done and said they would quickly refire. 30 minutes later they bring me a steak. Not on the bone. The steak was separated. They said it was so I would get it quicker. I told them they should have asked but accepted the steak as everyone else was was done their meals. It was fine as far as a boneless rib steak goes. Waiter takes desert orders and we finish up. Bill comes. AND NOT 1 DISCOUNT for the trouble. When I mention it waiter takes the bill. Waiter says Dennis the manager said it wasn't possible to write off the 100$ steak (on a 1200$ bill by the way). He said they would cover a couple deserts. I didn't want to make a scene so we paid but I did request to speak to Dennis. Dennis apoligized and only when I said I was going to write a review he offered to take care of me next time. Took my info so he would write me an email. 1 week later and have not heard from them. I'd say avoid this place at this point as the quality control and customer service is not quite what it used to be. * store manager did reach out shortly after this was written and made it right. Adjusted rating to reflect that.
Luxury dining at its finest. Hy's has some of the best steak I've had in my life, and not only in Vancouver/Canada. It is seriously exquisite and juicy, making it well worth the price. Great place to bring a date.
Fabulous food and upscale service great for any special occasion. Table side service was exceptional.
Very old-school dining experience with table-side salad making and a wood burning oven in the kitchen. It is quite pricey so not your everyday dining place by any means but definitely a must-try restaurant for any steak lover!
This isn't a Vancouver institution by mistake. Immaculate dining area, exceptional service and perfectly prepared food. The ideal location to celebrate everything from a wedding anniversary to the weekend.
Fantastic and delightful food, I liked the vibes this spot has, and the staff members were kind. I will definitely come back in the future.
Great cocktails had a fantastic steak sandwich. That's a great lunch menu or fancy dinner to impress a buddy. Friendly staff clean bathrooms
Good food but for the last 2 times, my boyfriend and I had a terrible experience. Both servers were just existing and it was not a good value to easily spend $300+ disappointing as the whistler location is stellar.
Food was excellent but unfortunately it seemed we waited a long time between appetizers and main course. Ended up staying for 2 full hours. Maybe there was a mixup in the kitchen. But a must try at least once!
Good steak but not worth the money. Way too expensive, not a great atmosphere. The server was great though
Very friendly service, great atmosphere, food were delicious. Our group of four shared a dry aged steak, side order of sautéed mushroom, special for that night, escargot, cheese bread, oysters, and caesar salad.
Place very quiet and exclusive. If you can reserve the table will be better. Staff very friendly and very professional , Jared was spectacular, offer us a great sampler. Meat really tastes, I think the best beef in Vancouver, worth the money we spent in this place. We ordered the dish Wellington, you must try it. The Bone 32oz. is for share. Prices is according to the quality of the foods.
Was here for a friend's birthday celebration of two people (Covid). I have eaten in a lot of great restaurants, in Vancouver, Toronto, Europe (Blue Water, Bishops, Bucca, George, Canoe, Cecconi's, Langosteria, Gramercy NYC, etc.) and I was excited to go to Hy's. Unfortunately, I have to say I was pretty underwhelmed (not even in the same ballpark as those mentioned above). The service was fine given covid, but it still seemed a little canned and stale. For people who have reviewed the place referring to "fine dining" this is a bit of a stretch given that other diners where wearing sweatshirts and even toques at the table (I know it's Vancouver but c'mon). Cocktails were excellent. However the food was just so-so. Not sure what the fuss is about the cheese bread. The French Onion Soup was thick and goopy with a hockey-puck of hard cheese. The chateaubriand was kind of tasteless and tough, the vegetables undercooked, with two tiny potatoes vs. a mass of green beans, while the sauces a bit goopy (I know two goopys in this review). Further the upholstery needed to be steam cleaned or replaced as it was worn and dirty at the top of the chairs. Yes, the atmosphere is old-school, but now almost too much bordering on kitsch, kind of caught in the 70's as is the food. Certainly no problem with the portions, no room for desert, however it would have been kind if they had even brought out a cookie or something for my pal's birthday to mark the occasion given the overall cost of the meal. Happy to have tried it, can't see ever going back. Really 2.5 stars.

My husband is very picky when it comes to steak. Fully approved from hubby. Atmosphere is amazing. Service is SUPER. I was so amazed how our server Chris is so professional. Highly recommend their cheese bread (the best) and the ceaser salad as a starter. For the salads, your server will make the sauce front of you from the scratch. I want to come here every week. SERIOUSLY!
My wife surprised me with this birthday treat without telling me where we were going. Upon arrival by Uber, we entered into a lovely old fashion setting of wood paneling and old pictures and greeted by friendly staff. We were early for our …
Great atmosphere great tasting food and our server Andrew was above and beyond super friendly and responsive went out of his way to really make you feel comfortable and enjoy your time there.
Steak was cooked to perfection, service was impeccable. The ambience here is more suitable for loud gatherings with friends... there were times when I would struggle to have a conversation with a person sitting directly across from me.
Rarely do you find steakhouse that does Chicago styled steak like Ike Hy's does. Top notch.
I am a steak maker crazy eating lover...and Hy's steakhouse is the only place I'll go if I want a steak done right! Bravo seriously!???????????????? 100% pure Canadian beef!
Wonderful evening. Food was sublime!
Hi, This place was the best steakhouse I’ve ever seen. The steak was so soft and juicy. There was this girl name Tina and she was super helpful. The others were great too! If you get a ceasar salad they make it in front of you, handmade! Everything was awesome! Btw this was the little girl at the end, bottem left cornner. Thank you for the great food.
The overall taste of foods are super! Service staffs are gentle, kind yet professional. The moment you spent in this place you will remember.
Let me just start by saying that for the price you pay here, anything less than 5 stars is a bad review. Over all, my experience was good. My wife loved her tenderloin, and I really enjoyed my mashed potatoes. The service was really good, and the ambiance was very enjoyable, however, my wife's baked potato was dry... I mean really, how do you screw up a baked potato? And my rib steak was burnt... Not over cooked, but over blackened to the point the charred flavour overpowered the flavour of the steak and although the steak was still medium, which is how I like my rib steak, it just tasted like char. It looked black all over... Disappointing for a $60 steak.
Cheese toast, caesar salad, steak diane. What more could a guy ask for? Delicious. Superb service. No room for dessert, but they were all tempting.
The cheesy bread was really good. wish i ordered more
Great Steak and Seafood. The porterhouse house steak 22 oz was cooked perfectly which was shared and 2 half pound lobsters was cooked very well. Tender and juicey. The chocolate dessert was cake melted in the mouth. The Cesar cocktail was spicy but the garnish needs work (just one bean). The waitress was attentive and pleasant and seems to be there when needed but not too obtrusive. Overall very good and definitely go back.
My family and I dined in to celebrate our 5 year old’s preschool graduation and our eldest son’s 13th birthday. Food was great, as always, but our dinner experience was made better by our server/waiter, Blair. He was very friendly with our kids, and really paid attention to them. Great service, Blair!
I'm a huge fan of Gotham and their cheese toast, but they took it off their menu so I came to Hy's to get my fix. Waiter was super nice, had a drink and some cheese toast, their cheese toast is honestly unreal. Highly recommend coming here for sure.
Service
My girlfriend and I had the pleasure of celebrating my birthday here at Hy's. I really enjoyed my beef wellington. It was probably the most delicious meat entree I have ever had in my life. My girlfriend had the steak and she was not disappointed either. To cap it all off, our wonderful server Matt made our banana foster and we thoroughly enjoyed the show. Matt is also a fantastic server and made our whole experience very welcoming. I will come back to Hy's for sure.
Extremely high end. Service was beyond excellent, food was incredible, only downside is the pricetag, but if you feel like giving yourself a good treat, you won't regret picking Hy's Steakhouse
Such an amazing restaurant. Beautiful decor. Very classy servers that really seem to enjoy their job. Everytime we have gone the service has just been impeccable. The steaks are the best I’ve ever had. The flavour and quality is top notch. Amazing high quality wine list. Cheese bread is amazing and a must have Bananas foster, apple crumble, cheese cake and creme brûlée are all amazing and worth saving room for. Definitely one of the best restaurants in Vancouver!
Food was delicious. Service was even better!
I cant say enough good things about Hy's. The Vancouver location has such a warm and elegant feel and the service is always outstanding. The cheese bread is a must, the table side Caesar is always delicious and the steaks are consistently cooked to perfection . You cant go wrong dinning here for a business lunch our celebrating a special anniversary.
Prices are over the top. Steak was really good however the vegetable side dishes were either over cooked on not at all. The service was not what the price indicated.
I liked the feel of the restaurant and the service was really good along with good food. If you're wanting a nice date night for a special occasion this is the place to go! Be prepared to spend though, the meal can get expensive quick but it's worth it!
Great atmosphere. The cheese bread and the seafood chowder soup were delicious, but the salad and the steak tartar were just okay. The steak was very dry, but the beef willington was so tender and juicy, love it! Overall, some dishes were good but some of them were bad. New York steak is a bomb, not worth to try. Order something ppl gave the good feedback with, otherwise might end up having something disappointed.
Lovely Place, very cosy atmosphere, especially in the Bar area. Friendly and attentitiv staff. Had oysters and prawns with scallops. Delicious.
Absolutely one of the best restaurants in Vancouver! Every single item we ordered was incredible.... We shared Steak Tartare, Sautéed Prawns, and their incredible Cheese Bread. I enjoyed the vegetarian meatloaf for my meal. The portions are even large. We brought home leftovers and were too full for dessert. I highly recommend requesting Blair's section. He is a very attentive and personable waiter and tableside chef whose sense of humor added value to our evening.
God I love this place. Only steakhouse in Vancouver with a mesquite charcoal grill. Get yours Chicago rare, and try the oysters. The service is impeccable, too. Truly an excellent experience.
I have been to Hy's few times and always enjoyed the food and service, however, last night we had reservation for 13 (made over 10 days in advance), reservation was for 7:45 pm, we left the restaurant at 11:30 pm !!! While the quality of food was fantastic (as always) the service was just horrible! never seen it like this, one reason could be that they add (like many restaurants) 18% gratuity for larger groups, so maybe they don't try as hard for bigger tables? Just to give you an example, 2 bottle of wine, took 20 min to arrive !!! maybe they had to go to liquor store to buy it? Anyway, if you go, go with smaller parties, quality is amazing, but I would NOT recommend this place to anyone with larger groups.
I visit this great spot often! This is the best place to to have a good dinner. I visit this spot many times. The meals are just great, the team is welcoming and the payment is fair. I like going in this place over a nice supper.
Dinner
The service was exceptional as always. Too bad they NEVER tell you the price of the daily special until you see the bill and be surprised. The table side service is suspended due to COVID 19. So if you are into that, now is not the time to go.
Best steak house in Vancouver
Quality of the food was pretty bad. I ordered the lobster and the meat lost its texture because it must have been frozen for months. As I eat it, it dissolved in my mouth like it was made out of powder. I didn't bother complaining as the staff was very nice and I was already full from all the appetizers.
I've never had an average meal or service. Both have always been great. Always order Caesar salad and get multiple orders of the cheese toast!
I love the relaxed feel of this place I definitely would return to try more dishes. The cheez toast was amazing. Everyone loved the flat iron steak. Service was well-timed and friendly, wines were affordable.
Dine in
The atmosphere is nice, menu decent, overall no complaints but definitely could have been better. Have to say Ilias was much more attentive that our actual server - excellent customer service and very attentive.
Simply the best steakhouse you will ever find (at least in North America). Be sure to stop at an ATM & fill up your wallet first, because you will pay for the privilege of eating here! Every steak lover should eat here at least once in their lifetime.
Service excellence. Delicious foods Great location in downtown
Started with the escargot, it was perfect. Had the filet mignon, medium rare. The steak did come out cooked under but they were very prompt to take it back and fix it. When it came back, it was cooked perfect. The steak was mouth watering. If you are looking for an amazing steak dinner, this is probably your best choice in Vancouver. Along with their other restaurant Gotham.
Almost The best steak I’ve ever had. It was perfectly done. My husband and I went there for my birthday dinner and we had a great time. Our server was fun guy !
been here countless times over the decades and don't normally review places at home but last night four of us got in last minute and had superb meal. however, writing this review to welcome our waiter, Jared, to vancouver. he was fantastic and is perfect for such an institution.
Went there 2x, and found their side dishes good (tried their oyster Rockefeller, cheese bread, soups, calamari) but then their steak is way underwhelming.. Atmosphere is nice and chill for a romantic date hehe
Best steak house in vancouver take the cheeze bread
Filet Mignon was amazing! Their infamous cheese bread is on point like always and server was very knowledgeable and helpful!.
The interior and atmosphere of restaurant is antique and unique. Service is superior. Food wasn't fancy in presentation or anything new but tasted good in a expected homely way. Portion sizes are perfect.
As their name states, the steaks were amazing! We had 3 different cuts, and they were all great. We also had the scallop which was perfect, and the cheese toast which wasn't as impressive as we hoped. The sides of potatoes weren't standout either. Will definitely come back to try other steaks and the salads!
The service is solicitous, a bit on the wrong side of this epithet but has the redeeming quality of being efficient and downright reliable. Ask a question about the washroom, and their staff will take you there, like on a tour of the establishment. Which is flattering. But the food quality is blasé and lacks individuality and distinction. The decor rather reminds one of restaurants in old Europe, as in those famous houses of food in Munich or Berlin where the ambiance never fails to trump the victuals on the table. If one has visited these old, venerable European establishments, the subject would seem like part of this continuum in food experience.
Been many times to Hy's. The cheese toast is a low quality rip off. I made better cheese toast in a microwave when I was like 5. Steaks are decent when you are sober, when high on substances they taste amazing. It is definitely worth spending $10-20 on couple tabs of acid before going to Hy's, their $50 steaks will taste like it is $1000 worth. You will be giggling so hard while chewing a tiny succulent piece that stuck up old farts around will feel out of place. When you close your eyes while eating, you will see colors! Beer selection is poor, superior stuff from local breweries is yet to land in this dungeon, cider selection is almost non existent. they got some wine though, but screw wine.
Excellent food, excellent service (especially Blair and the busboy). The person who took my reservation was very helpful in finding us a table for my mother's 80th birthday(tried to book on Open Table, but they didn't have any spots available, so I called the restaurant directly). Loved the old school table service for the Caesar Salad and Bananas Foster(they also do table service for the Chateaubriand for two, but we didn't have it this time). My family was very impressed with the food, the service and the ambiance of the restaurant.
The service here was impeccable and every dish we had exceeded our expectations. For appetizer, we had the cheese bread and shrimp cocktail. The cheese bread might sound simple, but it tasted quite a lot better than others that we have tried. For entree we had the 20oz ribeye steak and the fish of the day. I ordered the steak medium and the steak came out perfect. Its unbelievable how most steakhouses just can't get medium right, but here it was done exactly right. And did I mention, it was JUICY. Very. Overall a very pleasant dinner and would highly recommend!
Be sure to try cheese bread and steak tartare :) Highly recommended
I love Hy’s! Every other experience has been flawless. This time, was different. From the moment we walked in with a reservation for 8 30, we were asked to sit and wait for 15 minutes, while our table was being cleaned. We had to sit beside the washrooms, and no one came till 10 minutes in to offer us a drink. I called at 4 and asked if a booth was possible for our reservation, the lady confirmed she would have a booth for us. We were brought no a non booth table. The waitress took another 15 minutes to serve us and only came every 20 minutes after that. The waitress didn’t remove the wine glasses, empty plates or offer us drinks when our drinks were near empty or empty. The kitchen lost power and there was 2 large bright flood lights shinning into my face most of dinner. The food was absolutely delicious, the service was horrible!! Our dinner for two included: scallops, carpaccio, cheese bread, caesar salad, two steak dinners with two sides, dessert and drinks, close to a $400 bill for two and the waitress couldn’t come to our table without me flagging her down. We were there for 3 hours and I feel like I spent most of my time trying to get the waitresses attention. Ive always appreciated the level of service and attention to detail at at Hy’s, but this time really failed that. I was very excited for this dinner. Friday January 24th.
Always a great experience. Food and service is always top notch. Kid friendly and accommodating. Must haves are the cheese toast and caesar salad (they make table side). Atmosphere is good for any occasion. Steaks are their main thing and they do it very well.
I ate most delicious steak ever. Servers were nice and friendly.
Frozen in the time of fine dining. Justin prepared Caesar Salad and Steak Diane at the table. Food was so good Tables could be a little further apart. Beautiful evening.
Friendly service. Food was delicious. I enjoyed how everything was paired well together including their drinks. Tables were spaced out for social distancing purposes.????
Always amazing here. Our server Blair was fabulous. Looking forward to our next visit.
Attended a private event and occupied the whole second floor. The food and service are great. The waitress are very considerate and high standard. The steak is one of the best that I tried around the whole. I had the bone in rib steak. Marbling is good and very well grilled. Highly recommended for steak lover
Great ambiance, great food and great service. We asked our server to take a photo of us as we were celebrating our anniversary and he actually suggested a few areas around the restaurant to take great photos!
Food was great, service was great, atmosphere was great!
Steak and service is great there!will come again
Always a great time here at Hy's. Food and service is top notch. Definitely reccomend
Great place and awesome food!
Good atmosphere, nice and professional staffs, more importantly the great food. I have cheese toast which is very nice. Then beef wellington which is really good and I enjoyed it very much. The beef is perfectly cooked according to my request. Will come back with girl friend next time and try something else.
The experience was...ok and did not feel special. Service was generally ok as well except for when the cheese bread was just dropped on table wrapped tin foil. Both service and presentation in that instance could be much improved. Food …
Meal type
Great steak house, really enjoyed my meal there. They always get our steak done perfectly and have knowledgable servers to help choose drink pairings or suggest dishes.
Fantastic steakhouse! Great service and highest meat quality. We had the 60days dry aged black angus ribeye and the 28days filet. Both were perfect tender and tasted fantastic. I would definitely recommend spending the dollars more for the dry aged :-) All sides were very good and especially the mashed potatoes were just perfect!
Great service, great room, great food. Thanks Hy's.
Classy steakhouse. Excellent but pricy
Dine in
This higher end place will serve you great meat in many forms. The service is outstanding. You will find here some vegetarian options like a main of vegetarian meat loaf. The Famous cheese toast deserves it's good reputation. Just leave some room for your main course. Prices are as expected for the experience you get, every dollar is a dollar well spent.
I’ve been to a lot of steakhouses and this would not make my top 10 list. The beef carpaccio was nice. The cheese toast is as awesome as they say, but my main was average. I don’t recommend getting the mashed potatoes. They have no flavor. In fact you can almost taste the water in them after being boiled. I also got a side of seasonal veggies, which were just beans. The steak was cooked a little under than how I requested it, but it was fine.
This place is ok but for the price, I rather go to the victor or Elisa. Nothing wow'ed me. Their steaks were better than the keg but far worst than the victor or Elisa. This is considered a higher end restaurant with the prices to reflect that. But again, for the price they are charging, you definitely get better food, service, ambiance and views at the victor or Elisa. Hy's, if you're reading this. Sorry. It's the truth. Great service though.
Great steak and cheesebread!!! The service here is impressive and friendly. It's also easy to pick healthier options like fish and veggies.
I am a big steak guy, Hy's would be the place that I treat myself to once awhile! Been a here a few times and each time very happy with the service and food!
i almost never order a steak when i go out to eat, frankly, i do a better job on them myself at home on my grill!! this is my once on a continent exception to that rule! when you enter hy's you know you are in for a treat!! the waiter was a bit stuffy the first time we ate there, but the food made us return! since then, nothing but great steaks and great drinks and wines at this place!!
The moment I took a bite I went to my happy place. I think I melted into the chair. One day i'd like to be that old man that has his own table in the back of this restaurant, and as soon as I walk in, they would have the food ready for me. I'd like to die here. I guess you should try it.
I would surely recommend this place to everyone. It has enhanced royal look of interior design which makes this place distinguished from any other steak houses. Service is nice, yet, forgetful: I would recommend to check on your orders. After a picture of my plate was taken, I realized my lobster was missing :)
Great food and great service ! The beef Wellington is superb !!
Always a great place to get together with friends. James and Karen were fantastic, as usual. Cheese toast is great! Beef and lobster is perfect!
One of the best steak places in Vancouver. The ambience and food are exquisite and the service 6 stars. You have to try their “banana shake” for desert. Highly recommended however make sure you book in advance.
I remember the first time I came here. My date stood me up, but he sent his friend to take his place. It was very awkward. But the steak made up for his transgression as did the delicious Caesar salad that they make tableside, the cheese bread and the expensive bottle of wine. Since then I've come here a dozen times but the last couple times I left disappointed. The person at the next table was on a date but spoke loudly on their phone about a parking ticket she received, and the other time a group of girls celebrating a birthday that likely got their bandage dresses (people still wear those?) from the 30% off sale price rack at Bebe took approximately 2000 photos. I think their should be a no cellphone policy and a limit on selfies pretending to drink out of the carafe in an intimate restaurant like this. It takes away from the experience.
PROS: - Great Service. Knowledge of the menu and drink pairings. - Delicious Peppercorn sauce for the NY Strip. My Beef Wellington was cooked perfectly, nice and flakey puff pastry. CONS: Direct comparison to similar restaurants like Gotham and Black & Blue. - Lack of Complimentary Bread. When asked if we'd like cheesy bread, we said yes thinking it was included, not knowing that it would cost $12. We would have definitely picked a different appetizer or none at all if we had known.
Our first date was at the Hy's in Winnipeg, so when I decided to propose I called up Hy's in Vancouver as we have moved here. I told the woman who took my reservation that I was going to propose and she replied that she would make a note on the reservation. We arrived right on time. The front doors were opened for us, and we were seated at a perfect table with a view of the grill. Our server Jill was very attentive, friendly, and her service superb! Ohhh the cheese toast! so good! The steaks were delicious! The banana foster is a must have! my fiance doesn't like bananas or ice cream plus she was full from dinner and couldn't stop eating this desert! After desert I got on my knee and proposed, she said 'Yes!' We turned back to our table and there were 2 glasses of champagne! Thank you manager Phil and your staff for making this a perfectly wonderful evening! You couldn't have made it any better! Now that we know that Hy's has a 'Happy Hour' we'll be back anytime we can!
Once you walk in the doors it has old world charm with the paintings on the walls. It was decided we would have the Roundhouse steak 32oz with mashed potato . For appetizers we had toasted bread and a Ceasar Salad which was made at the table for you which was a bit different. We also had calamari which was quite delicious. The steak was cooked medium well and they also debone the meat off the bone which was different but also made it easier to have pieces of meat. The steak was paired with a Bernaise sauce. The steak was juicy and cooked just right and very tasty, it made you want to have more. Our server Blair was a bit funny as would give you tidbits of information. At one stage he said "Don't touch the plates as they are quite high and have seen customers touch the plates and burn themselves". We decided to touch the plates but they were only lukewarm. I would return to restaurant to try other steaks and to experience the atmosphere again.
So disappointing! For the price I expected something much better then what we got. There was a $30 mark up on basic wines, which is fine if the food is worth it, but it wasn’t. My steak was tiny and tough, and the seafood tasted like it came from a can. The best part of the meal was the cheesy bread.
Great food and ambiance! Loved the wine selection. Service was fantastic!
The steaks are unbelievable at Hys, and now they have a happy hour from 3-6 where appies and drinks are also onsale. The best time is to come is at 5 pm, not only do you get a great dinner but for the first hour you save a ton of money.
Underwhelming & overpriced food and my server Morg was a real pain to deal with. Would not come back
Had dinner here for the first time ever! I was a bit nervous as it was my first time in such an upscale restaurant. All the staff wore masks and tables were properly distanced or with a plexiglass divider. Staff were very attentive and polite. We did not wait too long in between courses at all. The food was delicious!
Great Service! Steaks are well made. Warm spinach salad is a must as they flambe in front of you. Fun touch!
Excellent dinner at Hy's Downtown Vancouver. Everything was great! Many thanks for our server Blair!
Excellent steak and lobster. First class service. A little bit dim on the lighting but the service was great and the steak melted in your mouth like butter. Highly recommended
Seafood platter was fantastic. Service was attentive but intrusive. The porterhouse was flavorful, but not amazing. Overall a great place to celebrate special occasions.
The best steakhouse experience I have had. Personal attention by our server with several suggestions. We tried the suggestions and loved every one. We will be back.
Fantastic food, fantastic service, old school charm. Caesar salad is the best in town. I will say one thing though, the prices are on the high end of the scale. Lunch for two with two drinks each was $300. No expense account!
The food was amazing. I recommend the caesar salad to start, and the cheese toast is great as well. I had the Dry aged rib steak and it was the best steak I've ever had. Our server, Blaire, was very polite, and attentive. He was also very funny. Over all a great night! Thanks Hy's!
Excellent service and food. We would recommend this place for friends and family to visit. We will be back.
A pretty fancy place to go. Their cheese bread was amazing and the steak too was cooked to perfection. The salads and desserts were made in front of you which gave it a nice dinner and show feel. Would definitely come again
Definitely one the best steakhouse I have been to. The servers here are nice, the environment is very cozy, but most items are very expensive
The Xmas lunch is pretty good.
It's been six years since I retired from Hy's after 43 years of service with Hy's. I still miss the guests and the staff after all these years. What a joyful experience it was and I have a lifetime of memories to share with my family and friends. Hy's is truly an icon restaurant and it warms my heart to see all the wonderful reviews they are still getting to keep up the spirit and tradition. I'm sure Hy is smiling down upon us all.. Once I get my health straighten out I'll be down to see everybody.
First-time visitor, and will be backt! English James was an excellent server! Loved him! The filet was good too... I enjoyed the one-on-one interactions with James and his tableside services.
Exceptional Vancouver dining experience. I've eaten at a number of higher end restaurants in this city and Hy's takes the lead in my opinion. Food, service and atmosphere all 5 star. Thank you for the memorable evening!
Went there with party of 7 and they put us in the middle of the large dining area where A LOT OF people were talking and shouting. I thought it would be classic yet modern atmosphere but seemed like a foodcourt. Our seever, Mr. Blair, was rude, calling my brother in law “HEY Young Man, you have to listen.” C’mon we went there to get decent service with good quality food but nothing went to the right direction. After we managed to order, Blair ask casually “ you guys want any cheese bread?” I figured it would be something they give but they nicely charged $20 for couple pieces of cheese bread. Steak was good but a bit salty. When we were trying to talk or take photo, servers interrupted and taking dishes that could have waited 20 sec. Blair finally got so gentle when he was giving me interact machine to me (lol of course) Overall, didn’t like the experience particularly their level of service. Consequently I won’t recommend to my friend and my co-workers. I happen to work in hospitality industry and recommend a lot of dining places and this one will be taken off from my list for sure until they improve.
Get the bread - it's worth the hype. High quality classic steak house with a clean interior and knowledgeable staff.
One of favorite places to go! The food and service is always top-notch. The cheese bread is to die for and the Cesar salad is the best in town!
(I went to Hys in mid January) Before The hostess sounded like a scripted robot.... Timed and un- emotional. Dont believe the dress code! There were people in sweats and "althleisure" wear. During: Upon entering, the hallway was crammed with chairs. Kind of messy looking. But the bar was quite petite. The bartender (an older gentleman) seemed very professional and calm. Food & drink: The cheese toast was gritty, oily and overrated. Drinks are pricey. But the drink selection was really appreciated. I got the gorgonzola tenderloin, it's an underwhelming $60? Very boring vegetables. Banana foster was pretty cool, couldve used a component to sop up the sauce. Service: Nothing to cry home about. The front of house staff was professional but stiff. Overall, ok. There's no real wow factor there. Everything was smooth.
Always a great place for a steak. Classic steak house decor and service. Great place to celebrate any special occasion. I was lucky enough to go on a night when they had prime rib on the menu. The meat just melts like butter. And of course finished the meal with the classic banana foster done table side. Always a special night when going to Hy’s.
This is the place all others try to be.HY is the gold standard. I have been a patron here for more than 35 years the service is impeccable.food quality always top notch any concerns are addressed quickly.the focus on customer satisfaction is at the top of the list you will be hard pressed to find a better place
My favorite Steakhouse in Vancouver..... absolute must for anyone whose serious about steak
Really great food and service here. I would come back here for a special occasion and would totally recommend it. Steak Neptune, cheese toast, key lime pie all top notch.
One of the best steaks that we've had! Great to see that not much has changed in this place. Consistent great service. Super attentive, but not overbearing (timing is impeccable). Ceasar salad prepared at tableside, an old world tradition kept alive here. Chad our server was so personable. Highly recommended!
What a fantastic steak. The tableside service is a real treat.
Fantastic experience for our 36th anniversary; superb service from all concerned especially Justin, our waiter. Katrina got us a wonderful seat on a very busy night as well. BTW, the Neptune steak was terrific as was the Caesar salad made right at the table. Thank you everyone!!!
Excellent steak, good wine list, amazing location and decor but is very expensive and the starter we had, crab caked, we're pretty flavour less. Otherwise great though, not 5 stars as think it is a bit overpriced for what is is and lacks better mid range wines.
Cosy and warm atmosphere. Really nice staff, really good cocktails. Food is impressive. You know why you go there. To enjoy a nice piece of meat. Really worth the price and the experience.

They have wonderful steaks and the Caesar salad experience is amazing. Also, great sides. One of my favorite spots in the city!
Possibly the best steak I've ever had, service was awesom. Highly recommend!
A typical steakhouse with good quality choices.
Food is amazing and the cocktails are tasty. Only criticism would be the cocktail menu is not overly extensive but you will be able to find something to enjoy nevertheless!
The service here is the best in the city as is their Bananas Foster. Fair price for a great steak dinner and the ambience is perfect for a romantic evening.
Worth it. The steak is truly great. The atmosphere of the place, the style -- it's what I want in a classic steak house.
Excellent atmosphere bringing back memories of older times. Steaks are without a doubt their main selling point and they are excellent. Be sure to try the hand-tossed Ceasar's Salad, and their famous cheese bread! Leave room for dessert if you can.
This spot gives first-rate service and enjoyable food. My favourite restaurant around here. The food and drinks served rapidly and the prices were affordable. Recommended.
Dinner
Consistent experience everytime we visit this Steakhouse. The menu is everything you'd expect from a top tier Steakhouse restaurant. Some of the items we enjoyed on this recent visit: Hy's cheese toast, jumbo prawn cocktail, black & blue ahi tuna and beefsteak tomato and red onion salad, and a prime cut NY steak - all were excellent. The steak selection and quality is second to none. Consistent service each time we visit. Simple and effective menu, terrific cocktail menu and impressive wine list. This is a great restaurant.
Best filet steak ever, very good steak salad as well, worth every penny.
Old style steak house. Elegant, white table clothes. Service was superb, food was great. Had steak tartare, 6 oz filet and bananas foster. Everything was excellent.
I don't understand why it's so highly priced. The bacon wrapped steak at the keg was better than the cut I had here. Honestly, the restaurant is gorgeous and the servers are very respectful. However, for the price I expect it to be a lot better than what the keg has to offer.
Food is great as always. Please bring back bottles of sparkling water.
The steak was the best I've had. The salad want really a salad, but that's not what we were there for anyways. Definitely recommended.
The filet mignon was life changing. Before we went I was worried that this very expensive meal might not be worth it, but after dining I had absolutely no regrets and can't wait to come back! We went for our 10th anniversary, I specified this in the reservation but that didn't change the experience at all. Would have been nice if they did something to recognize that. Still had an amazing dinner though!
Great food and tremendous service!
This is one of my top favourite places to go for delicious steak. During this visit my steak was cooked perfectly and seasoned well. Our server was great and friendly to us during our dinner and made sure everything was going great.
Beautiful dining place for special occasions. Excellent customer service and delicious dishes!
To some it may seem pricey, but the ambiance and great steaks are totally worth it.
Save your money. The thinnest $50 steak I have ever been served not to mention it was over done. Nothing about this experience would make me go back. When Vancouver has so many great new restaurants let these old overpriced ones get taken out to the pasture.
I made a reservation a week before. When we arrived almost all the public pay parking around are all closed. I don’t know why! We finally found a parking open which is two blocks away. We made it there like just exactly 15 min late, reception told us our table was canceled! And they can only arrange us a table which is normally a wiring area! We told the reason and they just could not accept that. Pleased at least you can give a call to is and ask me if we are still coming. Really disappointing.
Hys exudes opulence and charm . The staff are so attentive and give such wonderful service. Where else do they make Caesar salads and bananas foster right at your table? Our server Dan (who made both these things at our table ), was so friendly, and made excellent suggestions for cocktails ,appetizers and dinner . He made our evening very special adding small details to make my sons birthday dinner low key but very thoughtful. The ambiance is so quietly elegant, and is so old world . I just loved it. You know what would make it the absolute best?? Bring back the Baked Alaska! Even the mints on the way out are yummy!
Best steak I had in my life. The service was excellent. The steak was very tasty and very rich in flavour. The onion soup was nothing special. Overall, I enjoyed it thoroughly and I strongly recommend it although it’s very expensive and not for me to eat often hahahaha
Had an awesome evening here with my girl! The food was great , service was top notch and the cocktails were fantastic.
Excellent food, Blair gave us a fun and enjoyable evening with great service!
What needs to be said. Its Hy's. One of the finest restaurants around and it has been for 50 years.
Nice atmosphere, but they didn't have any steaks.. ended up going to Gothams
I had a great time here. As soon as you walk in the door you are transported to a cellar style steakhouse experience. Hy’s keeps the table side dining traditions alive by offering table side Caesar salad and flambé bananas foster. It was extremely fun to have your waiter make your food fresh. The food was tasty and the quality was good however the price point is a little high. You are paying more for the experience.
I don’t know how I’ve never been here before! The ambiance is perfect for a special night out. The made our Caesar Salad and flambéed our dessert right at the table! It was entertaining and the service was impeccable! This is now our new place!
Dinned here for my 30th birthday with my boyfriend and it was lovely, service was amazing and the food was delicious! Enjoyed every second of it.
Was advised that they are famous for their ch he's bread and ceacer salad so I had to try them. Cheese bread was awesome but cease did not live up to reputation in my opinion. Service was great.
My favorite place. Everything here is just Superb!!! Love love love the atmosphere, service, ambience, and the food OH MY mouth watering just thinking of it as I’m writing this❤️
Worth it. The steak is truly great. The atmosphere of the place, the style -- it's what I want in a classic steak house.
Was a great meal service amazing . Really great place will go back . Have the cheese toast
Excellent service, great food, very safe and protected inside. Well set up and deserving of it's five star rating
Dinner
Absolutely wonderful second visit. About 3 months since I was first there and just as amazing if not more! Our server, Aleksei, remembered my order as well as my partners and how we like our drinks, so he didn't have to ask and there were no mistakes. This to me showed how much he cared and made the experience that much more incredible. Definitely will be back and asking for Aleksei, I can't wait for my next visit!
Dinner
A monthly ritual with my son since he was a little boy, he usually orders beef carpaccio, scallops, and Mac m cheese. Of course, nothing beats Hy’s Caesar Salad and signature cheese bread!! We always get 2 extra orders or unbaked cheese bread to go after our meal. 350degrees in the oven for 8mins — perfection, Hy’s hot cheese bread at home!!
The experience was...ok and did not feel special. Service was generally ok as well except for when the cheese bread was just dropped on table wrapped tin foil. Both service and presentation in that instance could be much improved. Food was fine overall tho hence the rating. Not sure if I would chose here over elsewhere in future however.
Phenomenal service, food, and ambiance. Always have a memorable dinner here. The best Steakhouse in Vancouver.
Awesome place really nice and the service is superb, food quality is for what you pay. Great place for a steak and the cheese toast is truly legendary
Best steaks! Service is always excellent! Love the double baked potatoes too!
What can I say that hasn't already been said about this Vancouver gem? Its FANTASTIC. Pricey, but you would be hard pressed to find a better place for a steak....and the cheese toast....get the cheese toast
The best and tastiest steak I ever had. The cheese toast is alao delicious and a must. This place is top quality and class.
The service was good and the food was good but I found Cesar salad there was lot of garlic inside but other than that overall experience wasn't bad at all.
I am extremely disappointed with our dinner this evening at Hy’s Steakhouse & Cocktail Bar. …
The first time I went here, I had an amazing experience. The food was delicious and so was the service. The second time I went (a year later), the food just wasn't as good as before. Service now was similar to the first time but not as great. If you come here, Costco offers a great deal (just slightly less pricy).
Dinner for 2 for our anniversary. Great place always reliable service and good food. Ambiance is just right. Cheese toast is always to die for. Steak was just right. Our server was so pleasant and welcoming. Always a great place to go eat.
Service
Dinner
Their lobster was perfectly cooked. I recently went to a seafood reaturuant that specialized in lobster, theirs was so much better. The bananas foster was incredible! Our server was top notch, wish I remember his name to post but videos.
Fantastic food, great staff, you guys were the start of one very special night...
what a great time.....food was top notch and service was great (Karen our server was wonderful and on point)...... the garlic cheese toast is a must.....
Enjoyed lunch - great venue, wonderful Caesar salad, filet, key lime pie, craft draft beer and super service from Geri and her team. I will eat there again.
Over-salted, over-cooked, over-priced. 22 ounce porterhouse came straight from a blast furnace; drier and funkier than a charcoal brisket. If not for the attentive service, I would rate this with a one star.
I had previously called to make a reservation two weeks ago for tonight's (January 19) family dinner of 10 people (including 2 babies and one toddler). We were planning on celebrating two of my family members' birthdays together tonight. However, when I got to the restaurant, they told me that they did not have a reservation made for me. They kept on asking if I had booked it under a different name, I had to repeatedly tell them that's not possible as I was the one who called. At one point the hostess even questioned me if I had called the right number. So I took out my phone and showed them my call history that I had called the right number, and the hostess had nothing to say and did not want to continue the conversation. The manager came over to check the system (again) and randomly said that he's looking at my profile and the last time I had visited was on Jan 26, 2014. I told him that funny enough, tonight we're all back at Hy's to celebrate the SAME BIRTHDAY like we did in 2014. At this point, I felt very embarrassed as everyone was looking forward to this dinner, the kids were hungry and crying, there was just a big group of us standing at the entrance not knowing what to do. Although the manager offered to help us call some other nearby restaurants to see if they can seat us, the restaurant made me feel like I lied about my reservation. I can’t believe the restaurant would go as far as to question whether I seriously confirmed a reservation for 10 or not especially with my entire closest friends and family waiting behind me — especially after I had proved with my call history that I had clearly called right the number and had a conversation. Very disappointing experience.
This was 100% the best restaurant we have ever been to. The service was on point. Our server recommend a great wine to pair with our food. He had a wonderful personality. The food was to die for. I highly recommend this place. We ordered the cheese toast for two and omg ???? The ceaser salad is made at your table and was the best I have ever had. We can wait to go back. Just a heads up it's high end $$$
This is my favourite restaurant in Vancouver and i've eaten pretty much everywhere, if I am having a steak this will now be my go to place. Comfortable, cosy, the taste of the steak was delicious and cooked to perfection. The Cheesy toast is as good as it's reputation! I also want to highlight the truly Outstanding service we received during our meal. We came on Valentines Day weekend and was served pretty much right away without a reservation. From there we was given amazing service by Alexi (Hope i spelled your name right!). His Caesar Salad prepared at the table was very tasty indeed. He was funny, attentive and knowledgeable about his wine and steak cuts. Looking forward to coming back!
Hands down a 5-star restaurant. The cheese bread is a must and the Beef Wellington was 100% perfection. Amazing service. The tableside prepped Bananas Foster was delicious and entertaining to watch.
Honestly, I would say it’s not worth the sky high prices. The steaks were pretty good but wasn’t even as tender as good steak we make at home for just a fraction of the price. There were crab shells in the hollandaise sauce but the server quickly rectified that. Desserts were ok but quite heavy. You will need to budget about $200+ for a meal for two here.
We decided to have our 10 year anniversary at Hy's, and what a great decision that was! The classic cheese bread was just as I remembered, the steak au poivre was cooked to perfection, and if you decide to go here as well, treat yourself to the table-side caeser salad. Thank you for making our special night even more so.
We were in last night and our food was delicious! Every bite was exceptional even down to the green beans! Our service team was top notch! Hats off to MAX and KAREN! Must try- Beef Wellington and Banana Foster, flambe Table side! We will be BACK!
If you know what to order this is one really good steakhouse. Go for the salads and then a steak and you won't go wrong. Other things are just so so. The settings are not very spacious and don't recommend coming here with large parties. Been here a few times and the waiters and waitresses have been very friendly even though the level and standard if service is not that high. But come here for the steak and you won't be disappointed.
Meal type
Superb steak and a gorgeous half lobster. Service is excellent and beverage too. If you want quality and see a Hys in town, go there. It's not cheap but it's excellent value for money given the quality of the food.
I've had the beef dip sandwich here many times, but recently it seemed like the beef they use for the sandwich has been extremely salty. They say they slice up the prime rib steak for the sandwich, but I've had their rib steak and it definitely doesn't tastes like the same thing. The jus and horseradish mayo are delicious though. I'll give them one more shot before settling on a final rating, but it's been twice now that the beef sandwich has been extraordinarily salty.
Traditional old school steakhouse. Super cool entry with brick wall/tunnel effect. Very little to complain about, but in same way, not a ton to differentiate it either.
Took my in-laws here for mother's day dinner. Super impressed!! Everyone loved their steak. The pistachio creme brulee was very nice, not too sweet.
We had the most wonderful experience at Hy's this evening. Our server, Carissa, was extremely attentive. She offered wonderful recommendations when asked. The food was amazing. The Ceased Salad and French Onion Soup were a wonderful way to start our meals. Our steaks were delicious and perfectly cooked. And the Bananas Foster was incredible! You won't be disappointed dining here! We will be back on future trips to Vancouver.
Service
We frequent here on the occasion, food is usually great, service usually is pretty good as well. However, this last time we were here the server seemed distracted or just simply inattentive the whole time, and we had to wait quite a while to order and when we needed to add something else
Exquisite steaks and attentive staff. Very much an experience to be savoured
They offer an awesome range of fresh food. I liked eating here. The employees are always very welcoming, rates are reasonable and the place is always clean.
Steak was done to perfection as was the rest of the dinner. Will be back again and again.
Maybe the most manly restaurant. They have oil paintings of old generals on the wall and the lighting is dark. I like it. This is where you take your lawyer out for a Christmas lunch. The only reason I removed a star is it is slightly too expensive, even given their good food and service.
Dine in
While visiting Vancouver for work/pleasure, we ate here with 10 colleagues. The service was very polished yet friendly and food was delicious and flawlessly prepared albeit a predictable steak house menu. My husband had the duck which had a nice flavor and I had steak Neptune with some of the better hollandaise I have had. We started with their recommended cheese toast which honestly I would not choose again. I think it is meant as comfort food, but for the price is just toast saturated in butter and a mix of cheeses and not in a way that i thought was exceptional. The pistachio creme brulee was great, but their flourless chocolate cake was basic and too rich without more icecream. The atmosphere is very old school but warm and inviting. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny here for overall great food and some of the best service we had with our stay.
Really great service. Cool cocktail bar upstairs for before dinner with good old fashioned
We visited the Vancouver location on September 10, 2020. Distancing was great but... product and presentation quality was not. Our server was very knowledgable and upbeat. We felt we were rushed perhaps because of tables with groups of men on expense accounts sales in particular expecting a great deal of attention. Having had a career in this industry I can speak from experience but..... the last time I checked our money was as good as theirs. We were not offered coffee but given the bill quite directly. We felt like glad you came but move it along... COVID has caused a great deal of anxiety and while I appreciate the need to max tables to generate revenue what is truly going on. Our steaks were overcooked and, we asked for a little time between Caesar salad and main course but were asked if we could....like our main course right away. I think the steaks were plated and ready for delivery. Our bill for two came to $347.20 . 90 minutes tops... at your location.Sad. Quality of steaks was poor. Potatoes were dry, without sufficient topping amounts. Bananas used in Bananas Foster were not ripe enough.I know I make it on a regular basis. Yours was gummy and green tasting!. Sorry to say but very disappointed...expecting much better from Hy’s! Susan A
Absolutely outstanding. Business or pleasure this is a home run visit every time. Ownership cares: Staff is courteous and capable, the food is fantastic and the ambiance is old world but with a modern twist. Top drawer. Always a pleasure.
Had a delicious fillet mignon, but it was little bit towards the saltier side for my liking. Overall great dining and service. Get the cheese toast!
My girlfriend and i celebrated our anniversary at Hy's and were very disappointed. As someone who often eats at steakhouses and enjoys these nights out, the experience fell short of our expectations and made the night extremely disappointing. The first disappointment was on arrival, we were told that our reservation was ready, but unfortunately because of lots of walk ins we were going to be sat upstairs. Being the special occasion it was, we weren't happy about having to be sat upstairs where the football game had other customers very loud and disturbing sitting right beside us, but we did not want to wait until someone had finished downstairs and so we said we would sit upstairs. we ordered the Caesar salad as an appetizer and this was the highlight of our meal. the salad made table side was excellent and we were both pleased by the taste of the salad. When it came time to order our entrees, we were told the special of the day by our server. After she had described it to us i had asked the size of the steak in the special and unfortunately she was unsure, and so she had to go find out. When she returned i decided i would try this special with the bone in rib steak and prawns, and my girlfriend decided to try the chicken. When the food was delivered the chicken was excellent. Unfortunately the steak was given to me slightly less than medium rare, when i had ordered it medium, and all of the vegetables were cold and solid. The server agreed and took the plate to cook it longer. from this point to when my plate was returned it was 9 minutes and the plate looked exactly as it did when it left the table, and the steak seemed to have been cooked for another 30 seconds with no change. At this point i was disappointed enough where i just ate the sides and prawns and left the steak which is the main thing i ordered. As i was still hungry from this we ordered two deserts, the cheesecake and the chocolate cake. Both deserts were good. Unfortunately, because of the servers poor knowledge of the menu, and the extremely poor quality of the steak dish i received, our anniversary dinner was ruined and we were very unsatisfied. The $80 special was just not worth what was actually delivered and when paying that price for a steak the least i expect is for it to be cooked correctly... Hy's sadly fell short for us.
The decor reminded us of classic New York steakhouse. The service was excellent and our server was attentive and showed genuine care. She also gave us good recommendations. We opted out of table service steak because we wanted to have the best tasting experience. Cheese toast: excellent. A must have. Filet Mignon: tendered as expected for this cut. Evenly cooked to our request. Bone-in Rib Steak: flavourful as expected for this cut. Too much oil on the meat - similar to how I make it at home when I messed up. Dare I say, the Keg makes it better. Sides: the mashed potatoes was quite blend and the French Fries was cooked with old oil.
High expectation but mix experience overall. For the love of god, do not take on the cheese bread when the server recommend it to you. It represented poorly on the Hy's establishment when they serve you bland burnt tasting bread that was very poorly presented. This dish should NOT be served period. As always, I hate parking in DT Vancouver but this one is an exception. They are located next to a underground parking lot and was surprisingly cheap. We had PorterHouse, Beef Wellington as main and jumbo scallops as APP. Meat was excellently cook and season. Exactly what you would expect from a high end restaurant. It was so tender and buttery that it make my mouth water just writing this review! Scallops we had was also great. The baked potatoes on the other hand that came with the Porterhouse was poorly executed. Service was kind of weird. At one point, it seems like there was too many of them walking around and I would prefer less distraction. There is fine line between subtle and the in your face service. I came in to celebrate my bday but the guy who bought out our desert sang like 7 words of the song and abruptly stopped. Haha. When we were seated, the host took a good minute to decide which set to removed. It added to weird factor but the overall experience was interesting.
Excellent service and the food was absolutely delicious! I really enjoyed the room and can hardly wait to go again.
Meal type
Hy's was amazing to dine in. More restaurants should understand how well they do things. They even returned a lost item to me that I left on the table in Vancouver and mailed it to Calgary! Quality!
Great food with very friendly staffs! Bartender was patient with my cocktail request. The banana foster dessert that was cooked by the bartender by table side for us regardless how crowded that night was delicious.
This was such a wonderful experience. We devoured the cheese bread and the salad. The cheese bread was so puffy and airy. The ceaser salad they made the dressing and prepare everything in front of you. Definitely a must do experience. The ice cream and berries we requested were good but definitely weren't worth the almost $20 for it. The drinks were wonderfully mixed. The main course was really good. The steak and duck main courses were really great but the dessert was just so underwhelming. I also think having eaten Kobe steak in Japan it's hard to compare.
The best steakhouse in Vancouver. We started off with cheese toast as an appetizer which is a must try! The steak and mashed potatoes were amazing, and we ended with cheesecake as dessert which was so good! I would definitely recommend and be coming here again
Awesome bartender, yummy food & beautiful restaurant. Love love love. I’m from Vancouver Island & these guys were great & super friendly. I’ll come back here for sure
Well below par. Nice setting, but that's about it. "Bone-in" ribeye they served me had a comically small bone. It was a sliver the size of a dime. Never mind this, the steak itself was low quality gristle. I'm the type that will eat all the fat too, not this steak. It was charred properly and cooked to the correct temp - but the steak itself was nowhere close to what you expect it to be at a place like this. They did comp this steak, which was the right thing to do. Overall, big meh. *Owner responded, professionally, to review. Don't know if I'll try again, maybe. Bar looks nice. At least they are doing the correct things after mistakes.
Quick Summary Very solid steakhouse that's slightly above the Ruth's Chris / Lawry's tier. The most memorable dishes were the cheese toast and the Bananas Foster. The steaks were good, and surprisingly liked the filet the best out of the cuts Food- 5 stars Cheese toast- this is a must for their appetizer. It's fantastic Clam chowder- this was on their specials of the day. It was good, especially on a rainy day. Very fresh seafood in their chowder Featured steak with peppercorn sauce- luckily was able to try the NY strip, ribeye, and filet with this dish that was on their special. I'm usually a fan of more fatty cuts like the ribeye, but surprisingly, I enjoyed the filet the most (that is usually a rarity for me) Bananas Foster- dessert and a show. The dessert was splendid and always nice to see fire at your table Service- 5 stars Fast and attentive. Service was impeccable as expected Bottom Line It's a very good steakhouse that is slightly above the Ruth's Chris / Lawry's tier. You're going to great meal whenever you come here. Highly recommend reservations.
Another standout of steakhouses. Service was impeccable and the steaks were phenomenal. Would definitely come back for another delicious meal.
Never been here before. Service was top notch and the food was fantastic. Cheese toast seems like a strange appetizer but they nailed it. The Caesar salad prepped at the table was great and the beef Wellington was cooked perfectly.
Best steak in Vancouver hands down.
Place was amazing! Whatever people have told you about the cheese toast is true: irresistible!! So good! Had the new york strip, melt in your mouth steak!! Definitely would go back!
We came here for my fiancés birthday. The service was amazing from the moment we stepped into the restaurant. We enjoyed the table side service. The atmosphere was great. Our food was delicious and there were good vegetarian options available on menu as well!
I simply enjoyed their food. I always get good service here. The place is clean and the workers are always very kind. Keep up the good work.
As always, Hy's is consistently excellent. Over the years, we have dined at most of the locations, past and present; from Robson, The Mansion, Whistler and even Waikiki. The reason for the missing star has to do with corkage. I enjoy a fine bottle of wine along with a prime steak. Sometimes I bring a selection of my own, and expect to pay a corkage fee. The last time I dined at Hy's in Vancouver, I seem to remember being charged $50 for a single bottle of wine that was not available on site. By any standard, a $50 corkage fee is excessive, and even punitive.
Took my wife here this past week for her Birthday, and the overall experience was superb. The restaurant itself is a very unique layout and look, creating a perfect atmosphere. Their cheese bread is a must, and the table side created Caesar salad was simply the best we've ever had. Both our steaks and accompaniments were cooked to perfection. The bananas foster was prepared tableside as well, and one of the best desserts I've had. Will look forward to my next meal here!
Wonderful service. The dining room was full and we didn't make a reservation but was able to sit at a quaint high table in the lounge on the upper floor. Friendly service and our service was very attentive. The steak was amazing. Well flavoured and cooked to perfection. The pistachio creme brulee for dessert was great too.
Amazing food and customer service, totally worth the money!
Overpriced, big time! Go buy filet at any supermarket and it will taste the same as their steaks. No difference. I found that my entire meal was expensive and kind of bland. It was not a bad meal but not even close to being worth the money they charge. I also felt like the servers were really working you for tips and not very genuine.
I have been coming here for birthday celebrations and Hys has ALWAYS been more than accommodating. I was late for my reservations and the servers were more than patient with myself and my party being late. Consistency and great service has always been the reason why I come to this establishment. Thank you for the outstanding service from the team that opens the doors, the hostesses, cost check, servers etc. Keep up the good work! And for the guy that gave you that one star review, clearly doesn’t know what he’s talking about lol.
Excellent atmosphere, great food!
The ambiance at Hy's is wonderful, a little bit of old time charm. It feels as though you are dining in a private club. The food is, of course delicious, but very pricey, unless you have bottomless pockets it is not a family restaurant, more of a very special occasion dinner.
Great atmosphere and steaks. Table service is a good show but you don't need to necessary order your own as many tables order the table services and you can still enjoying them if you are not really interested in the food items.
My fav steakhouse easy Best Caesar salad in the world
Dine in
Good but wines are expensive for what you get .
Worst place for delivery drivers to pickup orders from waited for 10 mins at back door nobody came. Rang bell atleast 3 times. Went to front entrance and they said your order is ready and you have to go to back entrance to pickup food and there will be a person coming shortly. Guess what it took them 20 mins to come to the back door. Atleast try to treat us as human beings and respect our time.
The ambience of the restaurant, bar and bathroom is amazing. As a vegan I had a wonderful meal, food was delicious but the company I was with was eating their meal like a caveman but I couldn’t blame them as I’m sure it was heavenly. Give a high five to the staff for me when we’re allowed to.
After MULTIPLE visits to the Hy's in Calgary over many years having had excellent food and exemplary service this was a great disappointment. The steak could have been likened to shoe leather and the service was mediocre. Sorry to say, but it was so.
Good food, but not the best steak I've had. I wouldve expected better actually for the amount I was paying. Also they don't have any bike parking out front. Get gift cards from Costco to save money.
Seriously, you will never find a better place anywhere in this planet. The food is unbelievable, the service is tremendous and the food presentation is unique. Highly recommended.
Top notch customer service and high quality food.
Hy's truly blew me away with it's amazing food and service. Even classics such as toast and cheesecake we're well above other restaurants in this price range. Their service was not perfect but definitely made you feel welcomed and comfortable. Well worth the money will come again.
Food was excellant. Service very attentive. Lighting subdued (had to use phone flashlight to read menu). Was NOT loud.
We went in on Friday night, our reservation was for 8:30 pm. We were seated almost right away which was nice. Very pleasant and friendly staff, but the service was a little bit slow. I am not talking about the main dishes, I get it it takes time for steaks to be cooked, but we even had to wait for wine and cheese bread to be served for quite a bit. Well, it was Friday, could be for that reason. By the way, cheese bread was absolutely delicious! We ordered rib eye steak and filet mignon. Meat was cooked to perfection, but I personally thought my steak was over-seasoned (particularly, over-salted). I wish they would start asking about salt tolerance at restaurants, just like they ask how well done the meat should be :) Overall, very unique atmosphere with great food and friendly staff.
Our server was full of wonderful info, she knew the restraunt. And made an amazing suggestion. Get the beef dip. Although it was called something else. AMAZING
Perfect steak. Ceasar salad was also superb.
The food has been disappointing the last couple times I've been here. This last time for the food: The soup was watery for a chowder. The famous cheese toast was just salty cheddar on bread in a toaster over. The potatoes had an insane amount of salt in them. The ribeye was just... so disappointing and salty. There was no satisfying steak flavour, just fatty meat that tasted like salty cardboard. The mushrooms were not sized well and had no wow flavour. Just mushrooms and boiled garlic. The presentation was ok. The dessert was Banana Fosters, which the waiter half-heartedly made in front of us. The cart was sitting there for a long time, so the ice cream melted a bit, but he got us another scoop. I wonder why he brought it out so early when our waiter was busy with other tables. It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad either. Not the experiences you need from Vancouver's oldest steakhouse at fine dining atmosphere and prices.
Dinner
very good soft filet mignon medium rare, very bad chewy bone in rip eye and the knife is not sharpen at all, very bad skinned potatoes, very good service tho. prefer free butter and bread than the cheese toast.
The best steak house in the city . Always a good time when hubby takes me here . Love everything abt it including the server Liz .
We had a blast here with the family. The steak is so delicious and love the sides so many to pick from. The server was so great at keeping us satisfied for everything we wanted and came around to check on us frequently. Really good service.
Hy's does it right! This is the perfect place to treat yourself to a great Dinner. I have only been here once but it was amazing. The cheese bread is a must try. And so is the steak. They defiantly know how to do a great steak. For desert I recommend the Bananas Foster. It is a banana flambe that they make right in front of you! The decor is very regal and masculine. Overall I highly recommend this restaurant. If you want to treat yourself to a great meal and you like steak, then Hy's is for you. I did not like it... I loved it!
Not much to say other then a true Vancouver institution. Cheese toast is classic. The steaks are fantastic and wine lists are great. Service is always great.
I have been in so many restaurants in Vancouver but I can say by far was the best I have ever been so far , fantastic service , table side food entertainment, great environment . Strongly recommending it to anyone who wants to have a great night with loved ones . Thank you
One of the best restaurant to eat steak. I personally love the filet mignon. I always choose mid rare; meat is tender, perfectly grilled on the outside and juicy in the inside ????
Cant complain on the steak or other food. Service is excellent too. Each server ensure we were well taken care of.
IMO, one of the top 2-3 steak places in Metro Van. Always fantastic product and service. Not cheap, but you walk out feeling like you got good value, especially with Costco gift cards ($100 value for $80).
Just spent 800 dollars at this restaurant today and would definitely not come back. Steak was burned black and the Brussels sprout sides were absolutely burned to black and had only the taste of charred bitterness. Atmosphere and service were decent but the food was very disappointing
I organized a stag dinner here and the staff were great even after I changed the reservation 3 times ( again i'm sorry). We ordered appetizers family style and they did an excellent job plating individually and the food and service were amazing. Everything was well seasoned and staff were attentive and helpful.
Service
Safe environment, Magnificent Staff & Service - Delicious Food! Try the Cheese Bread!
Hy's is a reliable excellent steakhouse. A visit to Vancouver isn't complete without an order of their cheesy bread. You can expect your steak to be cooked perfectly nearly every time and if something isn't to satisfaction they are happy to replace it. A bit pricey, but one of the finer steakhouses you'll ever go to.
First is my first time to go here. food presentation was good, but when it comes to tasting the food was below average. steak wasn't that good.
I went here last year with my partner for a special dinner. It was really nice inside and the service was impeccable. Our waiter was attentive, knowledgeable, and didn't make us feel like we were out of place! However, they did mess up our order, and we didn't realize it until it was pointed out to us. We ordered an extra side, but they never gave it, but we were still charged for it. I had thought that they'd just decided to combine our 2 orders so I didn't know that they'd messed up. I don't blame the staff, as it must have been an oversight on their part. Our evening was nice, and the steak was still done to my liking. The cheese toast is really tasty and fluffy! I probably wouldn't go again due to their mistake, but I wouldn't discourage people from going.
Great service from Dan for a nice night out. Cheese toast and tartare were fantastic and the bone in ribeye was to die for. Sat on the second floor with ample distance from the next table near us. Fantastic dinner as usual from Hy's.
My husband has wanted to go to Hy’s and sit in your amazing lounge before a nice dinner forever. So I made a reservation for Sept 9 and we got there early so that we could spend time in the lounge. When we got there, the lounge was full and the hostess said she didn’t know when a table would come available and offered us to go to the dining room early which we declined and asked if she could take our phone number. We decided to go the Georgia Hotel Lobby to have a drink and as we sat down, we got a call from hys that the lounge had a spot. We came back and were seated in the lounge and was brought a drink menu. The waitress took our drink order and asked if we would like the food menu to which we said yes as we wanted to order some oysters. We got our drinks and never saw our waitress again. There were 4 people at the front desk and no one came to our table. My husband was not pleased and after sitting there for 45 minutes, we asked for the bill and left. The customer service was terrible and I’m not sure that we will be back to Hy’s.
Service was excellent minus forgetting some of the appetizers. I think the side table service for large sections is to blame. Food was good. Cheese toast is a must have, seafood and steaks are great but the Beef Wellington is a pass, order something else.
Made my meal sides right before my eyes! Great to experience service at its finest!! Totally melted my expectations and gave me the feels of absolute satisfaction!! Thank you for the awesomeness and ultimate services! You ROCK!!
Meal type
the cheese toast alone is ohhhh ma god one of the best things i’ve ever had in my life! The steak is pretty good too. 10/10 u should come here
Wonderful tasting food, outstanding service and ambient setting. Worth splashing out on if you’re looking for a great steak in a top restaurant. 5/5, hands down.
Great food as always and service is personalized so you feel like your at home
Wellington was good, but steak my girlfriend had was disappointing. Over seasoned, got well done when she ordered medium rare. She couldn't get through it and we switched because I'm really not picky. For the price I expected alot more. Service was a bit slow but it was quite busy so can't really complain. Drinks were good. Parking in the lot next door was convenient and not overly expensive.
I love Hy's. The atmosphere is great, the wait staff are top-notch - friendly, attentive, and the always recommend exactly what I wanted. Best steakhouse in Vancouver.
My 10oz NY strip steak had no strip, looked like it came straight outta the safeway bargain section. Peppercorn sauce had no peppercorns and tasted like it came out of a bag. Room was meh. Not worth the $
The cheese toast is delicious. Good atmosphere and good service.
Excellent food and service. Love their famous cheese toast, escargot and the ribeye. Been their twice in the last 2 months and always great service and food.
Hy’s Steakhouse, located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, has been a mainstay of the city since 1960. With its dark wood panel walls, rich red carpets, leather booths, dim lighting and white tablecloths, it is a classic steakhouse in every sense of that term. Think something akin to The Golden Steer in Las Vegas or Old Surrey in, well, Surrey BC. Such establishments hearken back to an earlier time when having a good steak represented the zenith of the “dine out” experience. At Hy’s, we have the opportunity to partake in such a repast and reminisce while in the presence of good company.

Dan is an exceptional server and was easy and fun to talk to. Great customer service. This man needs a raise !
Absolutely loved our experience here. The staff was very accommodating and our waiter was very knowledgeable about every item in the menu Including all the luxury spirits in the drink menu. We were suggested the Cheese Toast and wow was it amazing. The Beef Wellington was done to absolute perfection. We will Definitely be revisiting in the near future.
Delicious food and excellent menu . Great service. My friend misses the phone hanged on the wall beside each table (in the 80s), just being sentimental. Good price for the wonderful ambiance that you're getting. Paid parking beside the location (and it's very reasonable).
Not going back to this place ever again. I am willing to pay high $$$ for a good steak that is served in a great ambiance and great service. Well don't expect it here. I don't know what it was, but from the second we got there (we had a reservation and arrived on time) our server treated us SO poorly. We have him the benefit of the doubt and thought maybe he is busy or having a bad day. But his attitude and POOR manners got worse.... he didn't asked once if we were doing ok or if we needed anything else. He was counting the seconds so that we leave! He brought the bill without asking for it WHILE we were having desserts and he said, exact words: "tip isn't included" The steaks we got were too salty too and the Caesar salad was so bad that we had to just send it back. If
authentic dining place. very nice staffs. bit pricey
If it was appropriate for a grown man to cry over a Beef Wellington in a fancy restaurant, I would’ve. This was my first time here and a few other things. First Beef Wellington, first table-side Caesar salad and first Banana Fosters. What a fantastic experience. All brought together by a wonderful waiter named Aleksei. Thank you so much, what a good time!
The food was great and customer service was awesome! There were some issues listed below; however, after speaking with the manager everything was resolved quickly and I will definitely be visiting Hy's multiple times a year. Would like to say thank you to the manager for the wonderful conversation and support in resolving my concerns. The food was good but spent over $200 and when I asked to take the leftovers home I found out that they did not include all the leftovers. Also, I may have left personal belongings there and when I left a message, the restaurant never called back to advise. Common courtesy would have been nice when I spent over $200 and I also included a gracious tip to support local restaurants during COVID. Disappointed.
I like that the beef tartare is done table-side so I it's made to my liking. The steak, however, was just average and a bit overcooked to be medium rare.
This place does it right. The decor is classic and awesome in my opinion and my meal was delicious. My steak was cooked to a perfect medium and was by fare the best steak I have ever had. All the food is amazing and they definitely now what there doing. I will definitely be come back to Hy's and it was one of the best meals I have ever had.
Excellent service, delicious food and drinks. The best double stuffed baked potato I've ever had!!!
Our favourite steakhouse in Vancouver/Whistler ???? fantastic service and menu.
Amazing experience, great service. I am changing my 5 star to almost -5 just because of the really bad behavior of servers and manager. My boyfriend left his sunglasses there after we finished the food there I called them and gave my name to keep it and they said they will. I went a week after to get the sunglasses and no one knew where is that. They lost it and I asked for the manager but he did not knew where is it and he did not even said sorry. Guy looked at me and said yes it happens sometimes. Prada sunglasses got lost in our table and your answer is this! Screw this customer service. Eventhough I love the food but be careful!!!!
Maybe my expectations were too high based on the reviews I read, but in fact Hy's Encore is a dinosaur. I do agree that the service is one of the best that I experienced. However the steaks are ok-ish, not what you would expect for the prices they charge here. The ambiance is more of decades ago, wooden panels all over & the lights too much dimmed. It looks like an OLD boys network club. One modern item: an i-pad with the wine list, but is odd.
My boyfriend and I have never been to Hy’s before and I decided to take him there on Saturday, Oct 10th for his birthday since he loves steak. I requested for a nice table and they placed us upstairs near the wine bottles and it was perfect! Our server was informative and very pleasant. We ordered a bottle of red wine, cheese toast and Hy’s signature Caesar salad. The cheese toast was so delicious .. I could eat it everyday! Our server prepared the Caesar salad infront of us and it was the best Caesar salad we’ve ever had! I could eat that everyday also :P Shout out to this other server who let me take a peek inside the wine room! Thanks for the tour :) For our main course, my bf got porterhouse steak with mashed potatoes and I ordered steak Diane with mashed potatoes and green beans and we also ordered brussel sprouts to share. They were all excellent. We really loved our experience here and we will definitely come back for another special occasion. Thank you so much for making my boyfriend’s birthday memorable ❤️
Come to Hys for its unique atmosphere and deliciously made food. A number of their dishes including a main course can be made tableside. Their cheese bread is a must try!
Hy's is always a very good choice for a cut of filet mignon, but my personal favorite is their beef wellington. The atmosphere and service is on par with the price of the restaurant. You'll have to deal with street parking, but it is usually plentiful during dinner hours, and shopping is just around the block. Strongly recommended.
Great service, very friendly. Steak was quite good, nearly commensurate with the price...
Very low cost and low class restaurant. I would prefer more exquisite tastes from all over the globe. I was amused by the French onion soup, it almost brought me back to Stalingrad in France. I began to reminisce about my days in France upon tasting this wonderful meal. As a result of this I have bumped my review to 4 stars. TL;DR Go here for the soup, choose the local homeless soup kitchen for a more diverse range of meals.
If you want steak, this is the place to go. We always get the bone in rib-steak and it just melts in your mouth. Always order the cheese toast.
Our waiter Jared was amazing. However, there was another waiter, I suppose he was the lead waiter named Blair. He was so judgmental of the other waiters, pointing out what he deemed to be unacceptable service, that it was embarrassing as a guest. I certainly appreciate that staff needs to be guided, however he was very critical of the waiters in front of the customers and then had a little gossip session with customers when the waiter left. This was very unprofessional and left us as customers very uncomfortable. Jared could not have been more accommodating and professional and made us the best Caesar salad we've ever tasted.
Service is, as expected from a high end steakhouse, amazing. Their cheesebread is well known and a must try if first time there. My personal favorite is the beef wellington so if you want something different from the norm I would suggest that. Price reflects status so expect to pay for quality cuts but definitely a luxury worth going for once in awhile.
The restaurant was clean and fancy. It was a turn off that they allow people to walk in wearing jerseys and sweats. The server was polite and friendly. The food was very good. I would recommend the cheese toast. They have a very good wine menu. It was my birthday and I had told the server that but they didn't do anything special. For being upscale, the restaurant doesn't go above and beyond for their customers, in my opinion. They definitely didn't do anything to make our evening special.
One of the best steakhouses in Vancouver! Food is amazing and the service is great. Highly recommend going here for birthdays or any special occasions.
for a $500 dinner for two, there was nothing exceptional about the food or drinks. we ordered a bottle of the petit chablis, which afterwards i found was available at the bc liquor store. the fries are better at mcdonalds, and the creamed spinach tasted bland and grassy. nothing memorable about their steaks, and the banana foster was overrated. great service, though.
First restaurant we ate at in 1999. Food is still excellent and service was great. Thank you Karen for a wonderful lunch and exceptional service! We will be back.
Dinner
Excellent atmosphere bringing back memories of older times. Steaks are without a doubt their main selling point and they are excellent. Be sure to try the hand-tossed Ceasar's Salad, and their famous cheese bread! Leave room for dessert if you can.
Top 3 steakhouse in Vancouver
Excellent service, food was amazing. One of the best steaks I've ever had. Medium rare
Pretty good steakhouse. Nice atmosphere. Steak was cooked very well!
Top 3 Best Steakhouse in Vancouver. Tends to be on the pricier side of things, however the dining experience is second to none and the food is consistently fantastic. The Caesar Salad is made fresh before your very eyes, and Steaks are cooked to perfection. Cozy ambience makes for a sophisticated evening.
Delicious food and excellent service. I was with a big group so I'm not sure if that's why it was a tad slow to get our food but they were super courteous
Everytime I've been to this steakhouse, it's always been a pleasant experience. Cozy atmosphere, professional staff, and steaks delivered the way you want them. Highly recommend.
You get exactly what you’d expect at this place. The food is top notch and the service is first class. It was the best lobster I’ve ever had, and the steak was among the best I’ve had in memory. The atmosphere is a bit “stuffy” but that’s what you’d expect. I would recommend this place if you’re looking for a first class meal with a quiet dining experience.
Hy’s is my favorite steak restaurant in Vancouver. The cheese bread is the best. I always have a great meal there.
They've been in business at this location since the 60s for good reason. Both service and food are too notch. The Caesar salad made at table side with anchovies, garlic, freshly cracked egg yolk is exceptional. Porterhouse was cooked to a precise medium rare and double baked potato was perfect.
Great food Fancy place but to dark. The cheese bread is the most yummiest i ever had. Really great meat. Is kind $$$$$ but really love it
Food is usually much, much better. Service was great. Drinks too. Don't have the vegan meatloaf. (In retrospect, duh).
Incredible food and fantastic service. Best Caesar salad I've ever had
Honestly great pub style food with an elevated atmosphere. Really wish the food reflected the refinement and elegance of the decor. Over all though win win especially the table side dishes definitely an experience to remember.
Great service, great meal ????
It's lost its classiness. Service is not consistent. No longer feels like fine dining. Surrounding is too loud. Clients are dressed casually.

This place is absolutely incredible. My girlfriend ordered the 8oz filet and said it was the best she has ever had at a steakhouse. I had the 6oz filet and lobster, both were incedible. The only suggestion I would make is to have Yukon gold potatoes, however, the mashed potatoes were still delicious.
The food was excellent, and furthermore the service was quick, friendly and professional. Our food came in perfect timing. The cheese toast was excellent, and the filet mignon nice and tender. The only thing we didn't enjoy was the pistachio crème brûlée.
I enjoyed every thing about my dining Experience the salad, cheese toast bottle of wine, and of course my steak was absolutely so juicy so tender it melted in my mouth. like so good! ???????? Service was excellent. Next time I’ll definitely try the oysters Rockefeller the table next to us got it and it looked amazing!
Service
While our visit to Hy's in April was less than we've come to expect over the more than 40 years we've been coming here, our visit tonight exceeded our expectations. After our last visit, Mr. Philip Moi reached out to me to invite us back. Our dinner tonight was a special occasion with my son graduating with his Electrical Engineering degree. Mr. Moi provided his personal attention and he and all the staff treated us very well and we are grateful for making the evening special and one we will always remember. Thank you and we look forward to our next visit.
Amazing atmosphere. If you have not tried HY’s steaks you should definitely add it to your list. Heaven in your mouth.
One of the best steak house in town. If you ever going to try steak here. Try the prime steak. It's pricey for sure. But it's worth every penny !
Excellent steak and table service. The Caesar salad is fanastic. Lovely atmosphere although i did fine the lighting a little dim. Overall a little pricy but you get what you pay for. Will return again.
Meal type
Had dinner here with my girlfriend, the interior is beautiful and the filet mignon is out of this world, it was juicy and cooked to perfection. I’ve been to tons of steakhouses and paid ridiculous amounts for steak, somehow this $50 steak is in my top 3 I’ve ever had. I’m always iffy when it comes to chain steakhouses but this place didn’t disappoint I ended up even visiting the Toronto location a week later, hy’s doesn’t disappoint.
Friendly staff, delicious food, and wonderful atmosphere! The chateaubriand is absolutely excellent, and the key lime pie is sweet, fluffy and sublime.
The steak was fantastic salad mediocre the same as dessert
Catherine, our server was fabulous , really friendly and blended well with our group of 6. food was excellent and great portion for lunch
One of the better steakhouses in Canada. Meat is so rich and succulent unlike any other. Was a bit of a wait to get seated but my fault for not making reservations.
My first visit to Hy's and I have lived in Vancouver all my life. It was my birthday so I thought what a great way to celebrate ! Well we got to park next door to the left of the restaurant entrance 3 hrs for $7.50 for 3 hrs or we could have used their valet for $14.00, so say $20.00 with a tip your preference. Well we were very impressed with the interior very lavish and not to dark just right. All the staff were so friendly and we got a very nice booth . We shared a porterhouse steak, 1/2 of it was very tender the other 1/2 had a bit of gristle which was a little disappointing . For I think $89.00 that steak should be completely tender???? However the 3 cheese toasted bread was really good ! The sauted mixed vegetables were cooked perfectly and the caesar salad which was freshly made right in front of us also was also one of the best caesar's I have eaten . The flamed fried banana dessert was also flamed in front of us and was very good. So overall a very good experience, a very classy well run restaurant worth experiencing ???????? Also, please check out vitaminsforalongerlife.com
Absolutely wonderful. Nothing to pick on to be honest. I ordered a Beef Wellington and my friend ordered a NY strip, which are all cooked to perfection. If I really need to pick anything is that appetizers are a little mediocre, no surprises - but it's still very delicious. Overall, best steakhouse among Vancouver.
One of the best steakhouses in Vancouver. The steak I had there - a mesquite smoked rib eye was probably the best steak I've had in my life ❤️ The cheese toast is really good too.
Food & Service was great...only drawback was a group of 5 men in the bar area who were cussing every other word...kind of killed the ambiance but great none the less ...if I was the manager I would have cut these gentlemen off earlier....
Lovely meal, great service and correctly priced. What's not to love.
Excellent service. Top notch food. Suggest the cheese bread
Was here for my birthday dinner. This place was really unique right off the bat, it feels like you are entering Europe with rustic design. The only thing that was slightly uneasy was a amount of paintings of people. (kinda feels like they are staring at you when eating in my opinion) Service here was top notch, ended up ordering the following Cheese toast for two - Only got it cause I found this interesting to be in a fine dining restaurant. Wasn't really special neither was it mind blowing. just taste like grilled cheese. I mean don't get me wrong the cheese used is higher quality, but not really worth it. Would rather have it in a cheese and wine pairing than to be used in grilled cheese Chateaubriand for two - Was a experience the server grilled this right in front of your eyes. However, the fillet Mignon wasn't at par with the expected. Yes the meat was tender and moist but not worth the price. The red wine sauce really got sucked up in the meat making the meat extra juicy. Crab cake - flaky was overly dry but taste was it was fair Prawns and scallop - this i enjoyed, the prawns were really fresh and the scallops were cooked perfectly. the only sad part is the portion of this was really small. TLDR, great service, great decor, food was def overhyped. Dont mind paying much for good food, but this place is overly priced for what you get. Follow me on my food adventures, Instagram: davytsai92
I love Hy's. The food is always consistently good and the price of the food is great. I feel like I'm getting exactly what I'm paying for. One more thing, make sure you try to the ceasar salad (made at your table) or the cheese bread.
Soooooo good. The cheese toast and Ceasar salad are a must to start your amazing meal. Service is spectacular. The ambiance is traditional and classic. Worth every penny... Allll the pennies haha.
The very best of the high-end steak houses. This is one of the classiest restaurants in Vancouver. The best of steaks anywhere, cooked perfectly, with professional service. Always a delight.
One of the best steak houses in Vancouver.
Caesar salad was soggy and dressing mediocre. Ordered a porterhouse and bone in rib in med rare but both cooked to slightly over medium. Side dishes nothing worth mentioning. Overall totally not worth the price charged.

It's going to be a great meal, but you're definitely paying a premium for it! The steak tare Tare is prepped table side. The Wellington was great! Be warned, their happy hour is not available in their dining room! Other than that, it was a very pleasant experience.
Absolutely amazing! Everything was perfect from start to finish. Ceasar salad made at our table and our chateaubriand made at the table was perfect. The server was very knowledgeable and explained everything so well. Very attentive.
The cheese bread here was the main attraction. It was so good we ordered it a second time. Beef carpacio was delicious as well. For our mains we ordered the 22oz porter house steak. It was cooked medium rare like we ordered but the crust and seasoning was way off. It seems like only 1/4 of the steak was seasoned well and had a nice crust. The rest of the steak tasted kind of bland. Service was great for 90% of our night but it took quite a while for a server to come to us with a machine to pay our bill.
I won't not reccemend this place. Manager Emily. Is quite rude and very unprofessional The steaks were over cooked completely. Burnt. Make. I will never go back to this place. Again. When I told. Them they burnt my steak. They said that's how. It comes
Been here a number of times and I love this venue. Its a very old-school steakhouse that I could imagine Don Draper frequenting. Most importantly, the steaks are cooked to perfection, the cheesebread is deservedly famous, and all the accompaniments are delicious. The staff is extraordinarily attentive.
The kind and caring staff are the highlight of my experience. The 20 oz Rib Steak was cooked perfectly.
My wife and I sat at the bar and had table side Caesar Salad, Sablefish and wine. Jody and Greg took great care of us. The ambiance is great and all of the staff is very accommodating. This was a great dining experience. If you are in Whistler, make a point to dine here.
Amazing food and service, with a very cool atmosphere. One of the better, if not best steak houses in Vancouver
*poor quality photo I ordered the steak Au Poivre medium rare. The texture of the outside was too charred: it was too crunchy and it hurt the inside of my mouth at times. The inside was cooked perfectly. Unfortunately I would not recommend this, for the price I had expected an extremely well executed outside and it was not impressive at all. Came here for the meat so that’s all I’ll review.
This one is a classic, and the bigger brother of The Keg (seriously, Hy the owner did invest in The Keg). The steaks are out of this world, and this time I we tried the fish (sablefish). Equally as good. Service is fabulous although sometimes can be pretentious. That all went away when a second gentleman offered to take pictures of us—he was so ever friendly and nice. Loved his character. This location is much smaller than the Toronto location but still feels very classic and classy!
Ordered the dry aged ribeye and for $180 it was not what I would expect. The meat wasn't seasoned on some parts so had to ask for salt. The server brought out a salt grinder that had a sticky substance on the outside. You would think during covid (or any other time) they would be wiping these things off after use but I guess not. The steak also wasn't properly charred which was disappointing as to me that's one of the best parts of the steak. I would say this visit was more like a 2 stars but will give 3 stars since it's usually good there. Edit: I just saw Evan's review from yesterday and am very jealous. Look at the difference in char of his steak vs mine.
[2016.10.08] Hy's Steakhouse is a sister restaurant of Gotham's Steakhouse and they serve a great selection of steak as well as seafood. The restaurant is very cozy and has an upscale decor with 2 floors, each with their own dining room and lounge. They serve a lot of tableside dishes like salad, entree, dessert and even drinks so if you want to have a fine dining night with a bit of flair, definitely consider Hy's. And of course, their food is absolutely delicious too.
It was my wife’s 50th Birthday yesterday. Typically we hold our celebratory dinners at the Keg as we enjoy good food and steak and lobster is my wife’s favourite. They always step up to the plate for us every year. An acquaintance recommended us to try the fantastic steaks at the Hy’s Restaurant instead as apparently they were known to serve phenomenal steaks. As Informed by recommendation and some good reviews, I convinced my wife to consider trying and as it was in fact a very special birthday and Hy’s Restaurant was considered a special place. We made a reservation with a request that it’s my wife’s 50th birthday and I was hoping it would be a spectacular experience. We arrive at the Hy’s and were treated with immaculate service. The ambiance was extraordinary. We ordered a bottle of sparkling wine to commemorate the occasion. We ordered your famous cheese bread and Caesar Salad which were both rather delicious. We were eagerly anticipating the New York striploin as it’s recommended to be more flavourful and tender. It’s very unfortunate to say that we were quite disappointed. In this aspect, we definitely compared your steaks to the Keg’s. My wife had cut off approximately 1/3 of her 10 oz steak which was all fat. And just so you know, we don’t eat steak fat. We like it lean. My cut was quite fatty but not nearly as much as hers. We checked with our waiter and he informs us that it was like that with that kind of steak. Really? Last I remembered, we ordered steak not fat. Overall, they were so-so steaks with a baked potato. There was Nothing spectacular. We have yet to encounter a similar experience with the same sort of steaks at the Keg. After the meal, we were offered the dessert menu. I went up to the hostess to enquire if our waiter was aware of it being a birthday dinner, as I had informed in our reservation. She informs me that the waiter was aware. So when asked what we would Ike, I ordered the cheesecake, which was her favourite. The cake tasted pretty ordinary. I wanted to point out that the dessert was not complimentary, being a birthday, as I found out when I paid for our meal. I guess exceptions are not done for special occasions at the Hy’s. Unfortunately, that would have been different at the Keg, as they have always been accommodating to special occasions such as birthdays. There you have it, this was our first impression and experience. I would have wanted our review to have been more of a positive and uplifting one especially to those who were in similar situation when deciding where to go to celebrate a special occasion. As you can tell, I have put in some effort in elaborating our visit to your restaurant considering that it’s a high end establishment, charge for their meat and get paid for it. Its after all not a fast food restaurant. It’s only fair to let the next person decide, based on a first timers experience, how it is like. We are totally prepared to pay top dollar for really good food and service however sadly, Our meal experience at the Hy’s was not worth the expense and the quality of the steaks were much to be desired. They pretty much decided for us where we should have our anniversary dinner.
I think it lives up to the hype. Great service, delicious tableside caesar salad, awesome cheese bread, and the steak was money... but yes you're going to pay.
Service
Usually its perfect. I tried something new, it was fairly bland. Depends on who made the sauce that day i guess. First time ever that I had an issue with food there. I still give it 5 stars. Usually everything is abosulety perfect!!
Went to Hy’s for the first time to celebrate my birthday, and everything was fantastic. This was my first fine dining experience, and I couldn’t have been happier with the service, food, and experience we received. Our server, Chris, was very attentive, knowledgeable, friendly, and funny. We ordered the cheese toast and Caesar salad at Chris’ recommendation. My fiancé and I were initially skeptical about paying $20 for the Caesar salad, but after Chris described how it was made and how we’ll want a Caesar salad from anywhere else, we were intrigued. He was absolutely correct. The table side service was great, and the salad was fresh and very flavourful. Definitely the best Caesar salad I’ve ever had, and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to have it anywhere else. My fiancé ordered the Gorgonzola Filet and I ordered the Steak Diane. Both our steaks were cooked to a perfect temperature, and paired well with Chris’ wine recommendation. The flavours were on point. I even got my fiancé to try some of the mushrooms from my sauce (he doesn’t like mushrooms), and he really enjoyed them. The timing was also impeccable, as my fiancé’s steak came from the kitchen right as Chris was finishing my table side Steak Diane. We finished the night off with Bananas foster. Since it was my birthday, Chris even put a candle on the rim of the plate. As everything else was, the dessert was also delicious. Overall, we were very impressed by our entire Hy’s experience. Everything from the pre-dinner cocktails, to the food, and the service exceeded our expectations, and we will definitely be coming back in the future!
Service
It was our first time here. We were celebrating our 6 year anniversary. While walking into the restaurant, I saw that all the workers were wearing masks and there were screens up between tables. Great to see such precautions being taken! Made us feel extra comfortable. We arrived 20 min early and apologized for being so early, but offered to wait around for a while, but they immediately took us to our table. We sat down and our server was very kind and attentive throughout our whole night. Our dinner was delicious and our wine & dessert was great too! The restaurant was nicely decorated & it was not loud at all, so it allowed us to have a very nice romantic dinner. Worth every penny :) We ended up staying for almost 3 hours without realizing! Can't wait to go back.
Hy's is an amazing steakhouse that has great ambiance. The cheese bread is soo delicious and the table size ceasar salad is also a definite must. It's fun watching them make the dressing in front of you as well. The restaurant has a great upscale vibe and the steaks and service is definitely top notch. Our favourite steak house in town for sure, we will be back!
Love this place. Food is really good, service is excellent. It's a fun atmosphere and you can watch them grill the steaks through the window.
Service
The best steak in Vancouver. A solid wine list. Professional service: they actually wait for pauses in conversation before serving, and there is no “hi! my name is Britney’ and I’ll be your server tonight!” BS. Lively atmosphere, and no backwards baseball hats. ????????
It's really a 3.5 but I round it up mostly because there aren't that many steakhouses to choose from in Vancouver. The happy hour food menu is pretty sad - compared to other restaurants in Downtown their food is really dumbed down. The drink list for happy hour isn't very tempting either.
Disappointed.. Service was okay, with one large issue: liquor and wine service were sub par. French 75 was poorly ratio-ed and was sent back. We ordered sparkling wine that was an improvement. The “wine expert” did not touch table on a $460 wine purchase. Do not order the 2009 “Vietti Barolo”(unsure of spelling). It was not worth the price: poor start, with a mediocre middle, and okay finish. It should be removed from the wine list. I recognize there are poor bottles, but I would rest easier knowing that no one pays similar for a poor experience. This should be pulled from the wine list. It was not spoiled, just a “not good” vintage. Positive: Oysters and steak were on point!! The person who does raw oysters does them as well as I do them for friends and family. The chefs who prepared the dry—aged rib eye did beautiful work. Negative: The wait staff was over-hustled, and I poured my own wine more than once. You’re missing details that are important to customers! For what was paid, this was awful. My wife is upset, and so am I. Super disappointed given the price point, and previous great service. Please do better... or not. Your service was comparable to a generic, corporate steakhouse experience at 1/3 the price. Your table-side preparation was beautiful. There remains room for improvement. Please improve your alcohol service. It is early in the morning now, and I remain disappointed enough to write this review. Be better.
My girlfriend and I had an amazing experience. Server was on point and the food was amazing. For our first time we were glad we checked it out. But expensive but worth it
I went to Hy's last night for dinner. I had gone to Gotham Steak House two weeks before and since the prices are not too far off from one another, my low view of Hy's certainly is impacted by how great Gotham was. As soon as you walk in the door you realise that it's not that great. You get the feeling that maybe at one time it was butwhoever is running it has let it slide far. There is a smell, there is worn carpet and the room looks like it would have been fantastic thirty years ago but certainly not now. The atmosphere is not that great. It feels as though they have crammed as many tables into this small place as possible. It is also very loud. Also, the staff does not seem top notch. Maybe it's bad to say this, but I can't see any of these same staff members being hired at Gotham, or even the Keg or Earls. As for the food, the cheese toast, which is supposed to be famous, is nothing special. The fact that it comes covered in tin foil also doesn't do much for the presentation. When it really comes down to it I could have made it at home. The steaks were quite good, though it seemed as though the sizes were smaller than stated on the menu. Potatoes were okay, but again nothing special at all. The Keg beats it hands down. When we sat down we were given an Ipad for a wine list instead of a paper list which I found awkward, though perhaps others would like. When we asked for the paper bar menu we were given a list that had no cocktails or beer on the menu. Strange for a cocktail bar. There were only two beers on tap and when I ordered one, the server brought the other. At the end of the day Hy's is not a bad place per se. Yes the decor is tackey and dated, yes the staff and service are not top notch, yes the food is pretty good though not fantastic. It is when you compare it to it's competitors that you realise it's not worth going. Gotham is way better in all regards for not paying all that much more, and you'd pay a lot less at the Keg and still get better service, portions, drinks, atmosphere and mostly better food though the steak at Hy's was good. Thinking about it again, even if the prices were half of what they are, I'd probably still go to the Keg instead. There is simply no reason to go here when there are better competitors. I should have known, since any place selling gift cards at a discount at Costco cannot be that great. Your dollars will get you much better value elsewhere!
Dine in
Everything we wanted from a steak experience. Went here for a birthday dinner. Boyfriend is extremely picky with his steak and said easily one of the best steaks he’s ever had. Our server was very welcoming and made great recommendations. Our starters were the cheese toast, escargot and French onion soup. Cheese toast is classic, escargot with delicious amounts of butter garlic and the onion soups broth was the best part. Recommendation for my partner on his 32oz steak was perfect, mashed potatoes nice and creamy. We finished our dinner with banana fosters with a cute birthday candle that was a great end to our dinner. Espresso was exceptionally strong. That was the only thing I had a hard time finishing.
Food and our server were great. Though, I have couple complaints. First, the two female hosts at the entrance were not friendly at all and I tried to be friendly with them and tell them I have reservation since they wouldn’t ask anything or say anything first. Almost wanted to leave at this point. Our servers after seated were very friendly and easy to talk to. Food was great. My other complaint is that the table beside was super loud with their video playback on their cellphone constantly. I noticed other tables around also seemed to be annoyed by them. They were young and in hoodies and nonstop swearing. It almost ruined our date. I don’t know what to expect in this kind of situation, but just putting it down how my night went at Hy’s.
Over rated steak house, the one pound (16 oz) lobster tail is a lot bigger than the 20 oz bone in rib steak. As the restaurant is named as a steakhouse, we have higher expectations towards the steak and ended up totally disappointed with over burnt outside and too raw inside for a medium steak.
A Vancouver institution when it comes to a classic steakhouse. While the decor and space looks like you should be in a smoking jacket with a glass of cognac in hand, the food stands on it's own. I have gone around town to search for the best steak, and this is in the top 2 for the city. They do steak properly here but do not forget to order the cheesy bread. What is cheesy bread? It might just be the best thing you put in your mouth besides the steak.
Cheese bread! Scallops! Steak! Need i say more? I will... Service never less than excellent and Serene, Zac and Phil make the lounge awesome (so did Taylor. .. But i know he has moved on)
Great service; Excellent food; Can’t wait to go back after Covid.
Great tasting food and service here
The rack of lamb and cheese bread was amazing
Expensive for dinner but more affordable for lunch. The prime rib is always excellent and the cheese bread is a guilty pleasure of mine. A romantic old school ambiance and very good service.
Hy’s Steakhouse is a great atmosphere. Service was excellent and staff was very friendly and kind. Karen is the best! French onion soup wasn’t the best it was very different the way it was made. My ribeye wasn’t out of this world it was okay. My Gorgonzola Mac and cheese was amazing and the cheese bread was very good! I would totally go back for the cheese bread and the Mac and cheese! Wine was very good.
