This Restaurant belongs to the category of Pacific Northwest restaurant (Canada).
Great atmosphere. Average service. Average food.
This place have very fresh ingredients. It is meant to have fresh vegetables right on to the table. The food is great but it is a bit on the pricy side. You can find the restaurant being expensive. There are not that many tables so it would be better to make a reservation before going.
Wonderful food, wonderful atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit.
This place is legit. The set menu was the bomb. Wine did its job. There were only a handful of people there. Id go again just to eat the rest of the menu.
Amazing staff and great menu!
Absolutely incredible! Well thought out and perfectly combined dishes. Gracious and knowledgeable service. Reasonably priced. I can't fault it.
The atmosphere is great, while we dined on the terrace, it would equally be as cosy inside in the colder weather. Our reservation was misplaced but the staff was apologetic and quickly found a solution. While we opted for the set menu, which was a delight, I would say you can get more food for what you pay, by picking off the menu and sharing plates. The octopus dish.. yumm! The amount of care to provide local food is outstanding, they even use rice grown in Abbotsford!

Delicious. Absolutely delicious. Every plate was delightful and fresh. We'll definitely be coming back again.
This restaurant is part of the farm to table movement, serving different dishes depending on what is in season. Only set menus are available---a regular six course menu, a vegetarian menu, and a smaller four course menu. The dishes were inventive, with a rustic flavour, perhaps because it was February when I visited. Every dish was quite small in portion, however. My favourite dishes of the evening were the pork tenderloin and, interestingly, barley cooked in pressure cooker. Our server was very attentive. Great atmosphere and experience.
After hearing such great things about The Farmers Apprentice, I was a bit disappointed with my dining experience. While the atmosphere was great, and the service good. The food was not as good as I had hoped - definitely overrated!
I wish I could give a 2.5. This place is a hit and miss. When it's a hit, the food is amazing, when it's a "miss", you'd wish you didn't spend so much on such poor tasting food.
Another great spot for sharing food. I love the atmosphere! It has a farmhouse hipster vibe. They have house-crafted bottled cocktails. I had the Empress gin and tonic. We shared most of the items on the menu. There was a heavy vegetarian influence. The menu is small. We tried everything I was intrigued by and find no reason to go back. So, hopefully they change the menu regularly or you may only need to go once for the experience.
Excellent meal, service, and atmosphere.
Quite a good experience. Good food and drinks. I really enjoyed their pork belly which I thought was wonderfully flavoured and cooked just right.
Amazing cocktails, very nice atmosphere! Love this place!
loved it, unique, tasty and great wine pairing
I hate reviews because they are always biased views of mostly spiteful and sassy individuals. But this place deserves one. I was here 3 years ago and was delighted if not smitten by how professionally and good everything was prepared and how much attention to detail was invested into every dish. Now reading a few recent reviews made me think that the quality has dropped, only to realize that people who wrote those reviews deserve not to eat at places like these. Food here is delectable. Service is professional and not overly intrusive. They know what they do and they do it with style, grace and knowledge. The portions are just big enough if not slightly too abundant and the prices are just right if not slightly on the cheaper end for what you get. Anyone who claims otherwise should never even attempt to travel to food capitals of the world like Paris or Rome or call him/herself a foodie. I am happy a city like Vancouver can boast with a restaurant like this and that they are setting new (well needed) standards of dining in North America. If you like excellent food doubt no more. It is the money most well spent! I for sure will be back.
The small place really provides justice to its name. Cool and really friendly place.. quick service and the delicious food served. The atmosphere was really cozy. Food is also served with wine pairing. Overall the experience was really a great one. I would love to come back ✌️
Cool little restaurant. Food is good.
Best brunch in the city, period!
Truly one of the best meals I've had in a restaurant. Creative, delicious, and unpretentious. Had the omnivore tasting menu.
The food was good. Flavourful. And fresh service was good. Nice dining in experience.
Very disappointed specially with the taste of the food, it was simply all bland and there was nothing special about any parts of it. Seems that any of my friends could have gotten way better flavor and freshness out of there own kitchen with ingredients from the farmer's market. If my kale at home turns out this too cooked and looses its green glow, I'm highly disappointed. This food was the low point of my day...of my week. Staff were very friendly and awesome.
Dishes are cooked perfectly with fresh and unique ingredients. No qualms with recommending this to anyone. Menu is seasonal and the duck was great!
The Farmer's Apprentice combines an original menu with delicious farm to table ingredients. There are dishes for everyone, we tried the chef's tasting to sample as much as we could ( 6-7 items on the menu including dessert) and didn't regret it. We left full and satisfied. The staff is very knowledgeable both on the food as well as the wine pairings. The food is well priced especially considering the quality of the produce and the dishes themselves. In short this is an excellent restaurant with a beautiful setting. I highly recommend the chef's tasting as it was an amazing value and opportunity to get a full glimpse of what the restaurant has to offer.
This is one of our favorite restaurants ever!! Definitely plan on going back soon
Holy. Mother. The food. Spectacular. Or at least really tasty and interesting. Don't arrive absolutely ravenous, the portions are not large.
Went for brunch, good creative options at a decent price. Great coffee and drinks and lots of vegetarian options.
Fantastic food and very accommodating with allergies and other restrictions. Great value for the price. Highly recommended.
Excellent local sustainable creative dishes and wonderful service. Also try Grapes and Soda next door.
Kitchen is always on point with changing seasonal dishes! ????
No decision paralysis here, amazing set menu with each new course coming as a surprise.
We came in with a group of six for a meal chosen completely by the chef. Through nearly 10 courses, each and every dish was quick to attain Perhaps The Best Tasting Thing I've Ever Eaten status. It was amazing. The owners are passionate about their craft and it shows in all of the details. We will all be back, as often as we can manage.
Everything here is delicious. Like, beyond delicious. The staff is super friendly, too. The wine they have is fantastic. Can’t wait to go back again!
Went in with a friend for lunch and shared all of the plates. Everything was fresh, made with very flavourful combinations and ingredients, and our server was knowledgeable about the options and gave great suggestions. Loved the coffee as well. Would recommend all the things we had (mushrooms, salmon, tomato/melon salad, and the apricot gelato).
Interesting dining experience. We enjoyed all of the set meals. Apparently the menu changes daily and is never the same. That’s impressive. Many reviews state the portions are small and they are but after five courses we were all full and the restaurants policy is to not have you leave early based on feedback from them to another reviewer. I do recommended this place the meals are unique with ingredients you wouldn’t normally think would work based on a description but they pull it off.
Spectacular on steroids! Tastebud dance party that one must experience. Without question one of the best restaurants I have had the pleasure of experiencing. Gather your friends and family, book tables, order family style and let the fabulous team take care of the rest. Very thankful and grateful for the experience.
Superb use and preparation of in season produce. Beautiful presentation. Absolutely delicious.
Dinner is the place to be.
Fantastic, innovative, dishes. I went for lunch and got the set menu, it was spectacular. The by-the-glass wines were good and paired well with the food. The standout for me was the soup starter. It was roasted carrots and clearly they had incorporated a bit of char into it, as it had a truly unique smoky flavour that was to die for. All in all it was an exceptional experience, and I will be returning for dinner as soon as I have an opportunity.
Quite pricey for what it was- rather hungry after a $60 meal. Service was very slow.
Fantastic place...initiate fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere with amazing food and music
Great brunch place. Cozy place. Great service.
Great, fresh food. Be sure to open early and make a reservation as it is a quite small space and parties are given two hours for a seating.
Honestly one of my favourite food experiences in Vancouver. Everything right, wine pairing fantastic (nature & organic) and service on point. You have to go ????
Great concept. Tasting menu with wine pairing. A prairie kind of theme.
One of the best meals we had in Vancouver: taste, service, portion, size... Everything was perfect. Thanks Kieran!
Octopus salad was really well done. Just perfectly cooked. The vegetables were the highlight of the night. You can taste the freshness. For the price, the chicken wasn't anything special. The cocktails were better at their sister company Grapes & Soda.
Always impressed by their new dishes!
Only pre fix menu. Don’t allow people to choose if they want their meat or fish cooked at medium. Served rare fish - and when I said that I it’s too raw for me - they said ‘that’s how we’re serving it tonight’ - no apology. Also extremely slow service.
Get the seasonal tasting menu, add the cheese course, you won't regret it.
Very tasty brunch and biscuits!
I didn't enjoy my herbivore meal that much. But the menu always changes so I would definitely give it a second chance
This place is so much better during summer!
Delicious food and a cozy atmosphere. We loved the story behind the food and their focus on sustainability.
My fiancé and I came here for an anniversary meal earlier in the year. We went with their daily six course omnivore tasting menu and were pleasantly surprised. We were treated to a meal that was very fresh tasting and well prepared. There was no heavy or greasy taste in my mouth after the meal which is rare when eating out. The standout dishes for us were the asparagus soup and the farro grain bowl. Service was a little spotty but otherwise, we had a good time.
Fresh ingredients, creative dishes, flavours ok but for the price should be much more there. The portion sizes are small as well. A mostly empty early seating still had staff struggling to be efficient. Drinks, Brunch and the bill took forever to arrive.
Delicious food, excellent wine, wonderful service. The chef's table was diverse, anchored in local and regional offerings, and kept us tantalized to the last dish.
Great tasting menu , vegan/vegetarian friendly and a culinary experience
I loved all of their brunch dishes!
I do not get how this place isn’t a solid 5 stars. I get that it’s a tasting menu in a town used to choosing. I get that it’s expensive. Any person going here should know that. What I didn’t expect was the freshness and clarity of the food and wine. I had the omnivore menu which didn’t significantly change the menu by much, but the salmon with nori purée was the highlight. The natural wine pairing was spectacular. Every choice was smooth and complimentary and a totally new experience for me(which I crave). All-in-all, it was a Sunday night with 3 people working (!!!!) and you would have thought I was in a full service 10+ service restaurant. I wanted for nothing. Everything came on time, and the staff was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. This was some of the best service and exciting menu I’ve had in a while. Will come back!
Perfect food and service. The restaurant has a very casual vibe even though the food is pricy. The food is served as a fixed price for a set of tapas that are either "omnivore" or "herbivore". The menu changes very often, but it's always a pleasant surprise.
Seasonal, locally sourced, always exquisite!
It's a small restaurant but decor is lovely. Service was great. Helpful but not intrusive. Appetizers were simple but good as it showcases fresh vegetables and fruits. Not a lot of options for vegetarians and no option for vegans. I had Pappardelle pasta with mushroom and kale. The texture of pasta was perfect, and I personally loved the meal, but I like my food REALLY salty, and it tasted like the way I make my pasta. So some people may find it too salty? A bit more plant-based dishes would be nice. Also, I think there is always just one dessert, and I happened not to like the dessert the day I went. It'd be nice if there were a bit more options.
Service is ok but the food is really bad. The portion is super small. Especially we ordered a vegetable dish "French Bean" (forgot the name already). Cost us $15 bucks for 20 GREEN BEANs! That's it! The halibut's size is smaller than 1/3 of my palm (I have a small hand) and cost like $25 bucks or something like that. More importantly, the taste is not good at all or I should say not even close to average. I will never go again and I will tell my friend not to go there.
This place is very nice. The atmosphere was very nice, the service was great. I had the vegetarian meal which was really good. The portion was good for me as a lunch. Definitely not for any guy who needs bigger potion. It was a bit pricy for the food and portion. I did enjoy everything, was a great experience.
Yes! really liked this place. Great food.
What a gem! This place offers great brunch, with a small and well thought menu. It's said to be $$$ but honestly it's not any more expensive than any other local brunch place. Staff is nice, ambience is great.
Tasty brunch in a cozy atmosphere with a cool rotating menu.
Walking into a very earthy and calm environment, you are immediately treated as a guest. We were attended to well and given a full instruction on the very eclectic wine list. The food was delicious and healthy for you, which is a real bonus after the increase in my waistline during Dec 2020. Small restaurant but well served and very comfortable. Enjoyed it.
Nice little find. Excellent happy hour. The G&T's came premade and the food was good and different.
Excellent food in a hipster setting, nice wine pairings
Expensive bill, paying mostly for the experience. Food was great but not so amazing to justify the price. Atmosphere was superb and portions/choice of food pairing were spot on.
Had a great time!
Awesome food, got the 6 course meal and each part was super tasty. Very earthy flavors, like if you get a carrot, it's going to taste like a carrot, but in a good way.
Amazing food, service and staff - I highly recommend!
highlight of the meal was when the chef walked next to our patio table to snip some fresh herbs. crispy sugar peas and sourdough was delicious, and we also loved the daily cocktail!
The place was cool. My friends loved their food. I got 21 day aged pork belly. Not my favorite as it made me feel a bit weird after. The taste is good but maybe it was my fault to order it as it tasted really fatty and oily to me. I know it is pork belly so I should have expected it. Still, when I walked in the restaurant, the smell of oil was very pronounced and not my jam. Maybe others would like it. The dish cost 40$. Personally I don’t think it should have cost that much as it wasn’t that good. I’ve paid 40$ for dishes that were definitely more mind blowing. This wasn’t blowing my mind. Still, the vegetables that came with the dish were good. I tried my friends food as well and it was good. The menu for this place is on the smaller side, there were gluten free and vegetarian options but there’s no adjustments as well as no options for desserts. As cool as it is, if there are people who couldn’t find what they want to eat, they’ll just be left hanging. I’m sure in other times with different curated menu, it would have been good for others who come here. But maybe check the menu before you go to make sure you like the options they have. In conclusion, I’m not sure I’ll come back here. It’s a cool idea to partner with bc farms and bring farm to table cuisine. I might have expected too much and left disappointed. The place itself is very cool. Just wish the menu is a bit bigger, more fresh dishes to choose from and flexibility in adjusting them to meet the need of picky eaters like me. Thanks for the food.
Why does this have 4.3 stars? It should have 5.
Really enjoyed this culinary experience. Fantastic! Thanks again...I will be back!
The only restaurant we went to twice during our stay in Vancouver. Amazing creativity and flavores. Menu is always changing. Only one dish in common for our two meals. That is 9 new ideas we were exposed too! And we lived them. If you are looking for surprises and new ideas, come here for dinner. Nice wine pairing as well.
Really delicious meal
Pros: an exceptionally curated Pacific North-West food experience. Great vegetarian meal. Cons: fellow patrons were about as hoity-toity and pretentious as I've ever experienced anywhere. To be fair, I'm actually giving some subset of Vancouver's dining class a sub-par rating rather than the restaurant itself; but, it became impossible to separate the two in terms of over-all experience.
Amazing food, wonderful wine pairing :)
Relatively bland preparations of undercooked or oddly prepared food. The concept of each dish was creative and had a lot of promise, but the execution fell flat. There was definitely some elements of each dish that were very tasty, but not a single dish had any impact. We had the burrata, pine mushroom, steelhead and lamb belly. The only saving grace was the friendly and prompt service.
Best restaurant I've been to in Vancouver and I hope to find it even better than Italy too
Impressive local food
Amazing vegetable-forward food. Worthy of multiple visits.
Overrated. This restaurant caters to the foodie but the sacrifices that brings leaves a taste of pretentiousness and rushes you out the door after a set time frame. On top of that it is expensive for food that I personally found just Ok. I didn't feel my business was valued and likely will not return.
Good food. Small place, but the portions were similarly sized!
Great atmosphere, small, friendly and farm fresh. The menu is always changing and everything made in house. Watch out for their tasty doughnuts, made fresh and only 8 at a time. They are made rarely as the chief feels the need. Last month only 3 batches for three days were made! 4.6!! ????
Love this place. Great cocktails, well thought out food. Beautiful space and nice staff.
Enjoyed a really delicious brunch, but the side dish of cucumbers with black sesame seeds was overpriced.
Service is good, courteous but not personal -- which I actually prefer (I really dislike fake chit chat/small talk when paying). Memorable dish: their summer vegetables appetizer. Plating was beautiful, ingredients were fresh, and the price reasonable. Cocktail: a bit pricey for the quality
Honestly, don't really know why this place is so popular. Service was ok, but the taste and potion of the food were not so great. There's nothing really special. Probably won't go back.
My favourite place to eat in Vancouver! X
I had the tagliatelle and it was THAT mouth-watering and scrumptious. Wish it were a larger size. Highly recommended!
Small but tasty brunch menu. As the name might indicate local ingredients and many items offer a home made or local touch.
This quaint establishment has excellent food and outstanding service. The food and drink is of the highest caliber. The music is provided from an eclectic range of vinyl LP's on an warm sounding system. I would recommend highly for a romantic night out, or special evening.
Delicious small plates. Very reasonable prices.
My server seemed to have fun with the long conversation about my extreme dietary restrictions, and the chef made me a delicious custom meal!
Truest farm to to table in Vancouver. Excellent option for vegan.
Excellent will be back
I love the cozy size of this restaurant, the service is exceptional, and the food speaks for itself - incredible local ingredients that are plated into works of art. The natural wine list is the cherry on top. We really enjoyed the prefix menu too! What a relaxed way to eat dinner.
Absolutely delicious. Brunch was perfect. Can't wait to try to dinner Definetly Chef approved
Enjoyed the Omnivore 6 course tasting menu with local wine pairings. Excellent service and great room. Love the concept and use of local BC farms!
Very nice smart casual anarchic place with innovative menu.
Really creative and tasty food.
Highly recommend! Get the wine pairing when you order your dinner. Additional cost, but worth it for sure. I plan to go back.
Food was wonderful, with exquisite flavour. Had the wine pairings, and enjoyed.
The Farmer's Apprentice is a farm-to-table restaurant that offers tasting menus tailored for omnivores and herbivores. The ingredients are sourced from local farms, and the menu changes daily, depending on seasonal availability. It's a great place to enjoy some Pacific Northwest cuisine with some influence of Nordic and New American trends. The most exquisite experience, however, comes with the numerous collaborations that the owner arranges for regularly. These dinners feature remarkable courses prepared by invited chefs and restaurant teams from all over the world. We enjoyed one of the collabs with chef Trevor Moran, formerly a sous chef at Noma in Copenhagen, on the final evening of Dine Out Vancouver Festival. The dinner started with a plate of marinated vegetables and fruits. Lack of utensils on the table was a bit surprising for all the guests, but soon enough we cast aside the doubts and used our fingers instead. The first course – a simple dashi broth with drawn butter – was comforting and welcoming us to the experience. The grilled oysters that followed soon fine-tuned our perception of the texture and prepared us for the real feast of raw amberjack. The silky fish was a real joy to the taste. The next course was the real star of the night. A colossal sea urchin served in its shell with some burrata cheese was just astonishing. A roasted Dungeness crab was impressive as well, but couldn't keep up with the bar set by the sea urchin. A switch from sea to earth came with the potato soup, creamy and sophisticated, and continued with some roasted pork served in broth, accompanied by a sourdough bun with butter. A grilled pork belly with hot sauce completed the picture. The deserts – a light cream with celery and carrot sorbet – and a potato cake – a choux pastry filled with creme anglaise and wrapped in a thin layer of marzipan, covered in cocoa powder – gave us another reason to admire the mastery of the chefs. Joining a collaboration event at The Farmer's Apprentice is the best way to step out outside of the ordinary dining experience one can find in Vancouver.
Rich wholesome food, delicious combinations using local fresh ingredients, all guided by the inventive talent of Carlin... Thank you, Farmer's Apprentice!
A superb experience all-around!
The dishes are delicious and the service is great but the prices are far too high given the very small quantity of food. We paid 150$ including tip for a small piece of salmon (maybe 100g), 1 zucchini, maybe 100g of snap peas, 1 dessert and 4 drinks. Don't go there if you're starving ;)
Good tasting menu.
They're posting says minimalist farm-to-table restaurant but I found the food preparation to be excellent and the flavor was off the charts. It's a small place that fills up early so if you're going for lunch show up at 11:30 to get a table.
Amazing place. Price around 70$ per person, food quality was incredible with every dish being a whole experience of so many ingredients. Best of it? They change the menu every night! I'd love to have more. Staff was extremely nice, helpful and we met people from the other table. Great experience!
Some of the best food I've had in Vancouver! Plates are on the small side and meant to share. If you're on a budget keep in mind you'll need to order 3-4 plates for a full meal. Definately worth saving up for.
Love the seasonal rotation menu with a wide selection of both vegetarian and non vegetarian meals. The lunch special is the best deal around
Extraordinary, delicious and fantastically seasonal.
We decided to let the chef decide what to bring on the table tonight. And what a surprise! Every single dishes taste so good. My favourite one was the salmon. It’s so crispy outside and juicy inside. Oh love the salad too!
Really wonderful place. Smart food smart kind service yummy complex food.
Delicious - fresh & yummy!!
Our favorite restaurant on Vancouver. Manu always changinh with amazing ideas. Everything on your plate will be in perfect harmony. Highly recommended.
The food was delicious but there was not a lot of options on the menu when we were there and the service was okay
Farmer's Apprentice is the best food I have had in Vancouver since moving here four years ago. I have been to the restaurant twice in the last week, and recommended it to everyone I know. They have creative, unique dishes that are well prepared and are not over the top. Everything from the drink menu to the vegetable dishes, the braised meat to the dessert menu, is well thought-out and suits the rest of the menu and the ambience perfectly. Better yet, they have amazing service. The restaurant is small enough that all the employees help to serve the food and interact with guests, including the chefs, manager and hostess. Everyone cares about the guest's experience and the food they are serving. At the end of the night, you can even see the manager, servers and hostesses help clean up in the kitchen with the chefs. All together this is a great little place, it should be at the top of any Vancouver Foodie's list of best restaurants in the city.
Clearly highly overrated. I thoroughly enjoy a tasting menu done right, but the food was barely mediocre, pretentious, and such minuscule portions, I was finished in a single bite. I devoured the tasteless biscuit just to get something into my stomach, and I still left absolutely starving. At $175 for 2 people to eat less than an appetizer's worth of food and 3 drinks, I am thoroughly unimpressed. Don't waste your time.
Hippie vibe, small portions, and not very tasteful food. Great that it's farm to plate but portion size was super tiny
Their octopus is a must! You wouldn't believe it was octopus! Service was excellent.
They have a lovely tasting menu, and were able to accommodate my request for a vegan option on the spot, which I really appreciated.
Love the food and services here. Will come back again.
Deserve a Michelin. Get the wine pairing
The best kitchen in Vancouver.
This place has a great home feel with a menu that is driven by its fresh seasonal ingredients!
Pretentious for the sake of being pretentious
Finally dined at this Kitsalno area restuarant a couple weeks ago after hearing many good reviews on both the food and service. I brought a friend from Toronto (I’m from out of town myself) and we both tried the 6 course meal and the accompanying wine tasting selections. I went with the carnivore and my friend chose the vegetarian meal offering. The service was excellent, the food was simple and well done though in small portions, the accompanying wine tasting selections were good as well. My only disappointment as well as for my friend was for the dinner selections, only two items from each of the respective offerings were actually hot, everything else was cold including the soup early on, thus the slightly lower rating.
Fresh, well balanced and harmonious culinary experience. It was an absolute treat. Strongly recommended.
I never would've thought to order a pasta dish for brunch but it was so good. The tagliatelle was cooked perfectly and the mushrooms had the most divine flavour. The soft boiled egg was perfectly cooked and the flavours all paired so well together. Indoors was quite warm and getting to sit on the patio seemed a bit challenging for the staff but they did accommodate.
Best restaurant!
We had brunch, small+large+dessert. It was delicious! Best coffee, good cocktails. Small place with good ambiance. I had the sour broth with mushrooms and the noddles. Made a reservation, Friday morning was slow but you might need one for the weekend.
Very nice. Fresh, inventive and tasty dishes that were delicious and well cooked. Quick and friendly service too.
We went here with friends the other night and really had a good time. The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is great. We were not very impressed by the wine list though and the portion sizes were rather small. Their homemade bread is amazing though and I’d definitely eat here again
It was such a wonderful surprise as we found the place accidentally. It's cosy, all fresh organic farm products and very yummy. Their soup and bread is a must!
Had the omnivore chef's menu. Service was very good and very friendly, but the food was underwhelming... Flavours were inconsistent between dishes. Some were too salty, others were too bland... The flavour profile just didn't seem to flow throughout the meal, which is something I usually expect when I order a set menu. Some dishes also had textural issues, lacking crunch or something more substantive to offset the a plethora of softness/purées. It wasn't bad, but I've had much better at the same price point. On the positive side, you could tell the ingredients were all fresh, locally sourced, and trying to be different (though different for the sake of difference isn't always a good thing). Overall, if someone invited me to go again I would, but if I'm doing the planning, I'd likely try something else...
A very good restaurant the good is excellent
Fantastic 6 course meal. The pairing was perfect and I learned a lot about local food along the way. Highly recommended.
Brunch was delicious. Waitress's suggestions were helpful and serving size was spot on.
Fantastic experience and that’s what a meal here is. You don’t just go to eat the fantastic food. You go for a night out.
I went there with my boyfriend last year on my birthday. On top of the friendly service, the food was superb. The dishes were all made wonderfully, and I feel like the price was reasonable considering the quality and richness of the food. Would definitely recommend for people who are looking for good food with reasonable price, especially on special occasions.
Terrible food. Waste of money. Nice service
One of the best dining experiences my wife and I have had. Incredible from start to finish
Just another average place for this chain...above avg for Vancouver's standard but avg for international taste.
We did the family dining experience and the food was delicious. Per person it is a bit pricey but we were completely full. I would say the only disappointing thing was the wine selection. A few things with that. If you are going to charge $15 for a glass it should be bigger than a 4 or 5oz pour. Also, given the price the selection was not very good or at least what I like. Missing a crisp sauvionon blanc, a lovely southern b.c. Meritage or a hearty cab sauv. The name Farmers Apprentice suggests farm to table and I would include wine in that. So a better selection of BC wines by the glass would be a good idea. I understand though why they have the wines they do. Bill $275 for two people with 1 cocktail each and 1.5 glasses of wine each. A tad too high for the experience but terrific food.
Super tiny portion hipster food.
Nice place. Superb food. Beautiful service. A bit on the expensive side but truly worth it...Very nice atmosphere. Highly recommended.
Came here for happy hour. They have happy hour from 3:30 to 5pm on Fridays and Saturdays. We had the bottled daily cocktail which was delicious. It had calamansi and grapefruit soda. Would definitely recommend it if you want something light and refreshing. For snacks we had the blistered padrons and cauliflower. The blistered padrons went really well with the horseradish aoili. They were very smokey and meaty. Strangely addicting. The crunch of the almonds paired really well with everything and balanced out the bitterness of the padrons. The roasted cauliflower with the walnut muhammara was equally as delicious. They cooked the cauliflower so that it made it somewhat meaty and gave it some bite. Both snacks were great and paired well with the drinks. The service was also great. We sat for around 1.5 hours and weren't rushed out or anything as the dinner reservations started to come in. Would definitely recommend them for food and drinks. The place isn't very big so make reservations or come early
If you want to spend $200 and 2 hours of your life sitting in a restaurant starving, this is the place for you. A few yeas ago and it was wonderful. Last night and we spent two hours sitting in hunger, with each course of the ominvore’s menu so miniscule, it failed to satiate. Such sad joke! ‘Carrots” on the menu means one baby carrot cut in half on your plate. ‘Apple’ or ‘poached pear’ is similarly 1/8th of a piece of fruit. The main which was beef, was just enough to drape across your fingers, so thinly sliced that it couldn’t have been more than 2oz. We literally had to go home and make dinner. How does this place still exist?
I tried their takeout during and it was great. I got their Red Fife bread with gochujang butter (which was awesome...sweet savoury spicy), the pork rice bowl and egg sandwich. All the little details bring the food to life. A little costly, but I’m happy to support local business during this time.
4.5 stars. Excellent restaurant with a different price fixe menu every night based on a protein. Depending on how you see it, the lack of variety is either good or bad. Locally sourced as promised. Cozy atmosphere. Recommended.
They make it super easy, a choice between two set menus. Food is great, and you'd try stuff you otherwise wouldn't cause of the set menu
Weekend brunch with a bit of polish. Try the biscuit.
Superb food, excellent service, cosy ambience with great vinyl music - what more could you ask for.
Great farm to table restaurant with interesting new options every time we go. I preferred the old menu, where one could pick and choose. You now have to order a set menu which was $55.
If the chef is here you’re gonna have an amazing time. Just hope he’s here okay?
We have been going here for brunch and dinner since they opened. Today we went for brunch and the place felt different (new ownership a couple weeks ago). The table that sat next to us after we arrived, were done eating and on their way out the door and we hadn't yet received our food. When our server noticed this discrepency, she was very apologetic and went to the kitchen immediatelysaying that perhaps our order had been misplaced. Our food came a few minutes later. The manager told us they "were slammed" and brought us a piece of overly sweet cake that we had already told our server we didn't want. Over-all, the food was mediocre at best, the service was a mixture of great effort and awful. I think I may be done here. Too bad, it has been a favourite for years.
Thoroughly enjoyed brunch. Each mouthful was a joy of taste and texture. The four course sharing option is a must. Chef Jahn's attention to detail reflects in this exquisite experience.
I stumbled upon this small and cozy restaurant and it was literally the highlight of my day. The waitress serving my friend and I were very friendly and sweet. The food comes in small portion but it's enough that it won't make you go hungry or too full when you leave. Every dish is delicious and well decorated.
Best restaurant in the city.
We returned to this restaurant after not having been for a couple of years. We liked the set menus in the past, but the options on the a la carte menu were good too. Meals were presented beautifully, but a little expensive for the quality. The ambiance in the restaurant is enjoyable, but the service is just average. Our server was nice enough but didn't pay much attention to making our experience an enjoyable one. There was little effort to connect with customers on a personal level. Also, my husband inquired if a small change could be made to a dish and the response we receive was a flat "no". The server didn't even attempt to inquire if that was a possibility for the kitchen. We had a nice evening there, but this probably wont be in our regular rotation given the service and price points for the quality of meals.
Terrible with appalling service!!! Omnivore seasonal chef's menu: Both plates of Ling cod were raw, pink & stringy bits were still attached in the centre. The waitress (owner's wife) was not one bit apologetic about it & had a poor attitude in resolving it. The duck was overcooked, chewy and sauce was over salted. Very stingy on protein portions eg.) 1.5" square ling cod, 3 pinky-nail sized bits of raw oyster, sashimi size slice of duck.
This place is the best. It has such a cool vibe, a great patio and the food is delicious. Also has a great selection of natural wines which is something that I love personally. If you are into any of that stuff you will love this place.
Delicious food, great and cozy decor and friendly staff. What else do you need ?
My partner and I had dinner here last night on recommendations of friends. I had the 4-course sampling menu. Beet Salad, Halibut, White Beans in Tomato sauce, Dessert. My partner had the 6-course Omnivore menu. Net Salad, Halibut, Pork, White Beans in Tomato Sauce, Dessert. The Beet salad was delicious. My 2 pieces of poached Halibut fresh and simple, but I found it a bit salty. The accompanying clams a good size and tasty. Hazelnut sauce excellent. However, we both did not care for the White Bean in Tomatoe sauce dish. (The beans were hard, could have used a bit more cooking. It also did not seem to be a good accompanying dish that goes with a good quality fish like Halibut. I'd say something like quinoa, barley, or risotto would be better? But that's just my opinion. Also, now we know as we were seated, why the couple next to us left their Bean dish as we overheard them tell the server they didn't like it.) The dessert was excellent! Fresh blackberries, champagne grapes, with gelato and sprinkled with a tasty crumble! The accompanying sourdough bread with our meals was very good too. However, for the 6-course option, we felt the extra $15 was not worth it. You really didn't get anything "extra". The extra 2 dishes was Oyster soup broth, and a Pork dish. The broth was tasty, came with 1small oyster and small portion of broth. The Pork Dish was disappointing. Half of the thin piece of pork was fat. The 6-course did not seem to be priced fairly. His fish dish only had 1 small piece of Halibut while mine had 2. And the server said that's because he gets a meat dish so less fish. But aren't isn't he paying $15 extra for more protein? (So they are in essense splitting the amount in the protein dish to make it a 6-course? ) The fatty piece of pork was hardly appetizing. After trimming off the fat, there was hardly anything left! Maybe it was an off-night for them. But now we see why there were alot of mixed reviews.
I have been to this place a few times and food is not bad. But very disappointed the last time with the service and portion. My friends ordered the demi menu of the aged duck dish and the plate contains 2 thin slices of duck breast and a small part of duck meat. We thought it was a small portion and even make fun how good they are with the slicing skill and they would only need 1 duck breast for the whole night. It was ok as the food tasted good until our neighbour tables started to have their plates of duck dish arriving with doubling the portion of the duck breast. We were surprised and asked the server about if the smaller portion is due to we ordering the demi menu. But the reply was they should be the same. We asked why my friends have only 2 slices instead of 4 compared to other. They started to say they should be of the same weight and all that (which we are certain they were not), and why didnt we say anything earlier. We told them that we didnt know until we saw what was served to others. At the end, they were very defensive and pretty much ignore our table after. We werent taking pictures type and regretted not doing so. It ruined my friends birthday celebration. Very disappointed and will not be coming back to this place especially there are so many choices out there.
We were telling our waiter today: if David were to close the place, we'd probably sell our apartment nearby. It might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it's borne off the admiration for the sheer passion and devotion for the 'farm to table" concept that is being epitomized at the Farmer's Apprentice. Not too mention the atmospheric next door Grapes and Soda, perhaps the best cocktail bar in town, great drinks and discriminate wine listing, served on the same layer intriguingly simple yet addictive food, and warm environment.
The soup and the dessert is amazing. You can taste the ingredients really well. They even have a choice or sparkling or still water!
Very good menu at a reasonable price. The sauces and sides were always very inventive and elevated the dishes.
Good kale salad, the rest entirely underwhelming. One awful course- a slice of celeriac with a slice of bacon and an egg yolk....seriously terrible...all four of us agreed. My second time there. Overpriced. Don't go hungry!
Trying a bit too hard. But I have to admit that ingredients quality is there. Plus they have a good wine selection and it's a great fancy place for vegetarians/vegans.
Great food
The first time we ate here, the food was sublime. Brought my girl friend back for lunch and the food was over salted and the beans were undercooked (we're talking dried beans) Service was poor. We were all but ignored. It was october 2nd.
We visited Farmer's Apprentice for our date night out while visiting Vancouver and had a nice evening there! We did the demi tasting menu, which is 4 courses rather than 6, with the wine pairing. The tasting menu consisted of a salad, a main course (duck for me, stuffed pasta for my dinner buddy), a vegetable (asparagus for us), and the dessert, along with freshly baked bread with smoked paprika hummus
Great seasonal variety and selections. We did the wine pairing, which was VERY generous, with both the omnivore and herbivore set menus. The food was good, but the experience was nothing special in the context of the Vancouver food scene. High quality ingredients are minimalistically plated. We were initially asked about food allergies, but then told that non-dairy could not be accommodated in their traditionally French-style line up.
Best dinning experience I've had in a year
Wonderful pasta dish but the salmon dish was surprisingly flat. Lots of room for improvement. Over priced. Rethink required.
Cool room. We basically ate the whole menu. We let your the owner order everything for us and we loved everything that came out. The best meal I've had in the last 6 months. I'll be back often.
