Delicious food, very fresh. And the black cod was perfectly cooked. Charming staff too

Samantha Bacchus McLeod

Solid French food, the cassoulet I had was amazing and so flavourful. The waitstaff were pleasant and knowledgeable great experience!

Nick Whiteley

Good food but very poor service. A waiter showed a clear displeasure with the fact that we had a baby and a stroller which made us all feel uncomfortable and unwelcomed.

One of my favourite gems in Kitsilanp for brunch. This cute eatery serves up exquisite brunch in a French Cafe setting

Talid Jalbout

The place has pretty typical French West Coast type food. It has declined from about 5 or 6 years ago but is still okay in terms of quality. We went there a few weeks ago after an absence of several years. I do have to say that they have a bargain for dessert. They have a croissant homemade ice cream for only $3.! It is one scoop of ice cream together with what I believe is a homemade palmier. That is the outstanding deal.

Alex Kwong

Wonderful to once again have Au Comptoir to visit for a very Parisienne meal!

Sarang Brahme

Maxime is wonderful, the food is fantastic, the atmosphere is absolutely sublime.

Enjoyed a delicious breakfast here. The truffled omlette was beautifully done as was the latte. Service is outstanding from this amazing team. It is first come first serve so arrive early.

Great food and excellent service

Very good restaurant. Not for the picky eater, they do not take any orders for changes or substitutions. Which is fine with me because I like their menu. However some people may find that difficult, ie vegetarian, gluten free, kids. Very French inside from the decor to the servers with French accents. I will continue to go back.

Service was 100/10! The staff were all wonderful. Mind you we went right when dinner started (at 5) so it was not busy. I got the ravioli and it was so yummy!! We also got the banana rum sorbet (which is made in-house) and it was the best thing I’ve ever tasted. 100% coming back once we are allowed to! I highly recommend ordering takeout from them in the meantime ???? Ps. My photo does not even do it justice

The food was quite good. My girlfriend and I ordered each a latte and she had the burger and I had the veal sweet breads. Both were very tasty and we got a nice seat outside. They do not serve alcohol outside though just in case you were wondering. The service was great. We had water immediately and the server was very attentive. It’s not super cheap and the portions aren’t huge. Would have been nice to have a bit of bread on the side with my meal. Overall it was a nice experience and I would come back.

Delightful little bistro in the heart of busy 4th Avenue. Had a lovely brunch with my mother. She had the crispy duck wings (very nice), and I had the mushroom soup de jour (also very nice) and the charcuterie (excellent). We both immediately decided that we would have to return for dinner sometime. Dinner menu looks delicious.

Pascal Morschbach

An absolute staple in Kitsilano and would be devastated if it closed a la Bishop's. Sorry I'm not a picture taker when I just eat my food but absolutely delicious and not too overpriced. I definitely recommend the SAINT-JACQUES, ENTRECÔTE FRITES & SAUMON À L’UNILATÉRALE. I'm looking forward to giving their Duck/Canard a go.

Grace Hsieh

Excellent French fare in a relaxed setting. The appetizer, the main, and the dessert were all spot-on and delicious.

Alexander G. Tsakumis

Great restaurant, with very tasty french food. The waiters were too nice thow, I didn't really felt in Paris. They were even asking how was the food and wave me at the end to have a nice day. More gluten free option will be appreciate.

Cleo D

Wonderful little spot. Great service and a lovely assortment of contemporary french cusine. My wife and I love it and always leave feeling like we were treated to a great meal.

Went there for dinner. Excellent food and great, efficient service with lovely recommendations! I like it very much when your server is friendly and knowledgeable, but only sees your table when you want or need the service. That's my personal preference. Tables are a bit small though. Will go again for sure!

Hamed Noori

Very pleasant staff and an excellent breakfast. Thank you!

One of my favourite places to go for either brunch or dinner. I have tried the beef cheek dish and while it is tender, it has a hint of bitterness to it — perhaps due to the sauce. However, it’s evident that the ingredients are thoughtfully incorporated into each dish. The duck confit is a dish we always come back to.

Mike Meyers

One of our favorite Brunch spots in the City. The food is outstanding as is the service. The Owner Maxime and his crew are extremely friendly, accommodating and have just enough character to make the experience enjoyable. As with any classic French restaurant, I would advise against asking for substitutions or modifications. The duck wings are to die for! Bon-appetite !

Louise Warren-Leggett

Awesome food, and nice French staff, a real slice of France in Vancouver.

Samantha Doyle

They don’t take reservations so be there early! I came here with my partner and we waited 15 minutes for a table. We had sidewalk seating which really reminded us of Paris. We started with their terrine de foie gras et lapin and soup of the day which was a cold corn soup. We also ordered the agnolotti au maïs and magret de canard. We finished with 2 scoops of sorbet. The agnolotti tasted like a pillow of corn soup in every bite. The duck was seared perfectly and complimented with the citrus from the cantaloupe. Their service was superb and their food was amazing. They were also reasonably priced ($140 for 2 ppl and 3 courses + drinks) and their food was quick. Highly recommend!

Fernando Guardia OKelly

The food is very good. Good selection of wines too. But it is the ambience that I loved. Walk in the door and you are in a Paris cafe. Go. No reservations. PS It can look to be really busy. But go inside and ask. The lineup outside is most often a lineup for the bus.

Ryan Montgomery

Excellent food and great service

Lorne C

I can only review the brunch service. It's amazing. The dishes are magical. Hands down the best coffee in vancouver.

This place is just a gem for our usual lunch gatherings. Food quality and service are excellent. Price is very affordable too! Our visits to Vancouver must include at least a brunch/lunch here!

Tim Martiniak

Duck wings, fries, and wine were excellent!

MEL Levrault

We had brunch here with family and loved their food and service.

Amy Imbesi

My friends and I decided to try the brunch here after our original plans fell through. Luckily, we didn't have to line up and was able to get a table quickly. The restaurant definitely had a Parisian cafe feel to it. The server was quick paced and composed and at some points, I wasn't sure if we were annoying him with our questions. Our friend is pregnant and we didn't want to run into any dietary issues. We requested for my friend's eggs to be well done and the server had no problem with this at all. However, when she received her dish, her eggs were still runny. We flagged the server down, and he quickly took her dish away and re-cooked her eggs. We really appreciated the efficiency and quickness. The food wasn't anything overly special, but it was good. I wish I read better French, since I can see on Yelp now that there were some other more interesting brunch dishes I would have definitely had preferred to try. This restaurant wasn't on my radar before, but I think it will be on my radar now. It'll be interesting to see if the dinner menu and the dessert menu will be as good as some of the other French restaurants I have tried in Vancouver.

Very pricy but good quality food.

I only have the pleasure of sampling the weekend dejeuner and brunch menu. It is absolutely divine. The coffee beverages are a treat on their own, but the dishes are absolutely exquisite. There is a cozy, almost old-world vibe in here. 6 stars

Even though the atmosphere and setting is more casual than some other fancy restaurants, their food is definitely on par. We ordered the appetizer of the day which was scallops and the rabbit terrine. Those two were decent but not as amazing as the main courses. The duck and veal we ordered were both very tender. The duck's crispy skin contrasted the tenderness of the meat very well and the whole plate was lovely. Although, one of the slices was a bit more chewy than the other two and wasn't as enjoyable. The veal was superb. We really enjoyed the paired of the tender meat with the puree and the cream and pepper sauce they served. The balance of flavours was great and the overall was fantastic. Portions are good for the price we pay for. Service is friendly and welcoming.

It's hard to say enough positive things about this spot. Great food in a lovely space with friendly staff who are the just the right amount of attentiveness. I've been a few times and our party have always enjoyed our visits. Very much recommended if you're in the area.

Pretentious is one word to describe the workers and this establishment. This morning I wanted to get a delicious croissant "to go" on my way to work but was denied because apparently they weren't ready for customers. So I walk down the street a block and back to get my car (2 minutes) only to see a "regular" who I have seen there before eating a fresh croissant outside. Rude. So I have now taken my business to Their There just down the street who by the way, has even better fresh out of the oven croissants for anyone.

Best that Vancouver had to offer

Oscar Kwok

Good French bistro, standard fair with good atmosphere. Highly recommend anyone going to make reservations. All the food looks good and prepared with care. I don’t recommend the fish in papillote though, it was lacking in flavour and did not wow me as my first experience at this restaurant. The burger and club sandwich looks like the most popular item for lunch as I see many people ordering it. The restaurant can get loud at times, but it’s expected as a bistro place. Good for grabbing lunch with a friend or two, but not for prolonged conversation. I would go back again and perhaps try something else on the menu

Josh B

We left after being turned off by the service. The restaurant was 1/2 - 3/4 full with no line. While being shown to our table one of the waiters cut me off and almost ran into me dropping something off on one of his tables. The hostess put us at a table and didn't offer to take our coats despite the cramped tables. Our waiter was less than hospitable, at these prices I expect to be treated like more than an obstacle to doing their job. We left.

Johnny

Have been twice for lunch, love the "Paris Bistro" feel, very close to the real thing other than no Edith Piaf playing in background. Had the pork belly (melt in your mouth) and the duck confit, done right. Wine is a little expensive but the service and the atmosphere make up. Highly recommended but go early, no reservations.

Au perfect! Pastry is top notch , in house chef, second time there last month and just got to making this post now. My clients and I went for dinner here and it was a welcomed time, excellent , delicious food and I will be taking future clients here again.

The place is very similar to the brasseries in France. The chairs outside and the inside decor is similar to those you find in France. I believe most of the staff is French as well. We had our lovely waiter who was from Strasbourg. He gave us good recommendations. The food was tasty and the portion is good. To start We had Foie Gras and it was just ok. But the rest do the food was good. We came for lunch but maybe next time will try the place out for breakfast or brunch as a change. I can imagine this place would be ideal for a romantic date or if you wanna experience something close to a French brasserie here in Vancouver. Also the location is ideal as you can go for a walk on the beach afterward.

I was looking for a great restaurant to share a special night and wow! I loved the cozy atmosphere and the staff were very helpful, knowledgeable, and service oriented. As for the food, it is small but I swear they have the absolute best butter I have ever had. I don’t know what they put in it but just wow!! The fries were also absolutely amazing, very crisp and perfectly salted and flavourful!! For my main course I got the coq au vin Sunday special and it was great! It was absolutely amazing, the chicken was moist and went very well with the rest of the dish. I look forwards in the future to coming again, it was great for a special night out and I will definitely be coming back!

Vanessa Schneider

Best Chinese food in Vancouver!

Jaxon Mueller

Decent food, but doesn't allow substitutions. I don't see how forcing me to take the onions off a burger myself adds to the dining experience, especially when it means I have to scrape off the cheese to do it.

Hamed Soltani

A tasty, casual, but atmospheric French restaurant in the middle of Vancouver. So good that I went back the next day after my first time. The look of all the dishes may be similar with those in other places, but the flavours are much finer and tastier, reflecting the skill of the chefs there. Highly recommended, busy on Saturday night, but not as much on Sunday night.

Ronald Lee

Fantastic place for brunch, a good burger and coffee. Just note they do not take American Express Cards

Muriel Marc

One of my favourite places in the city, truly a little piece of France. Wonderful food, wonderful atmosphere!

Terry Alm

Oui oui oui. I love the details from the terrasse tables and the bar from Paris. The food is delicious and the salad dressing alone makes you feel like you’re back in Paris. Service is quick and appropriately attitudey in a very French and accordingly enjoyable way.

Julie Wong

LOVE this place. It is one of my favorites in Vancouver. I consistently love the burger, the fish, croque du jour, and obviously relaxing with a rosé and snacking on a baguette. The decor and ambiance is perfect. The servers are great. If you want to feel like you're on vacation for a small part of your day, go here.

Anya Torina

The maple glazed duck was very good.

Min Cooper

The decor of an old Parisian brasserie but a research and well selected menu. Don't expect to eat a cheap French meal, but a good and well selected food from the French gastronomy made with a lot of Canadian local products. A bit expensive, but a pleasure for the mouth

Marc-Antoine Bar

Just started my food and I already felt offended! The server is very rude when they pass you your plate when he takes your utensils. For the whole dining experience the server never came to ask is the food is good, if there is anything needed. Be mindful this is a $50+ classic French dining place. They didn’t even explain their menu. I lived in Vancouver for more than eights years, have heard so many good things about it, I was disappointed by their services, as I said it is rude and unattended! Except, the food is very pleasant to eat!

Anne Peterson

September 30, sat at the bar at lunch time. Both service and food were somewhat disappointing considering the price I paid. It was OK, but just not enough to recommend it or come back. I ordered the Croque madame, which comes with fries and salad. Fries were the worst. They were cold, bland and not crispy. Although I hate asking for condiments at a restaurant (it may be disrespectful to the chef), I had to order salt to compensate the lack of flavour.. The salad was like a box of mixed greens from Superstore with a drop of a vinaigrette. And I've had far better croque madame sandwiches in other places. Try Tour de Feast in North Van, or even Yolks' croque madam is much better than my sandwich. Regarding service, the host was very attentive and my server (the barman) was nice at the beginning until it went downhill. Once I told him I was not having any drinks, it was like I became someone not worthy of his time, I was no longer a customer. In short, service should be improved.

Charming! My husband and I stopped in for lunch. It was lovely. So much Character. From the sewing tables to the doors which open up in the front like being transported to old France. The food was fresh and tasty. Service was very efficient. The desserts looked amazing. But we were too full to try one. All in all a great time. We will return.

French bistro food. I had a great salad with tangy white anchovies. Very tasty. My wife ordered the croque of the day that had confit duck on it. She loved it. The place feels Parisian. The wait staff are friendly and know their product - it feels like you are being taken care of by owners.

Had an issue with the 'Skirt steak' or 'bavette' for dinner the other night. Though it was tasty as was the rest of my meal, I noticed that it wasn't skirt steak (or even flank) but flat iron steak instead. Upon finishing my meal, I went right to the manager to ask about it. I was met with denial. Spoke to the chef who happily showed me the raw cut that was clearly a flat iron cut. For those that know the difference between the two, they are completely different. The latter being from the abdomen and the former is a shoulder cut. If you question my opinion here, check the images in the google review and you too will see a flat iron steak and not a skirt. Anyways, i happen to love skirt steak and was really disappointed that it wasn't actually skirt steak. Was really surprised that both the manager and more importantly the chef don't know the difference either. The lack of simple knowledge and or integrity in a restaurant here make me question the whole operation. I suppose it would have been nice to have been asked how I would have liked the manager to handle the situation too rather than be met with denial and refusal to acknowledge my perspective. So I calmly payed and left and here I am sharing my experience in hopes to help another.

Mark Esterhuizen

Very pleasant staff and an excellent breakfast. Thank you!

Cameron Pan

This place really brought me back to when I was in Paris last year from food, decor, to wait staff. Reminded me that my French is not so good. I had the pan seared lingcod with braised lentils with a red wine jus. The fish was cooked perfectly with a beautiful golden crust. Tip: go early if you don't want to wait as they don't take reservations. Also, if you like to make changes or modifications to your order, this place may not be for you.

One of our new favourites. Came here for the first time and it was excellent. Staff was very friendly (contrary to some reviews I've read), I absolutely love the decor and feel of the place, and the food was delicious. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Had dinner here before and it was great. But when we tried brunch, it was amazing!!! And those pan au chocolat paired with their perfectly brewed coffee! And dang those oven (slow) cooked eggs tge best ones ive tried.

Disappointing service. Was looking forward to a nice weekend brunch but did NOT appreciate the snobby attitude from our waiter. Will not be visiting again.

From the first moment you arrive in that place they give you a great feeling. Very hospitable French speaking hosts, it is a friendly restaurant to go out with your friends or with your date. Great meals, creative chef, good price and attentive service. Warmly recommended Au Comtoir on 4th.

Evgeny Moroz

Alisha Sood

A little bit pricy, but that is not what this restaurant is about. The desserts are not only extremely delicious but aesthetically pleasing. If you are going in the evening, the lights are set dim and a good mood is set. Definitely a place worth checking out!

Best meal I've had in Vancouver in 4 years! I wish I had taken some pictures, will include them here on my next time there. Had the delicious elk tartare, entrecote, tried the phaysan and the fondant mi-cuit au chocolat. Everything was perfectly seasoned and well balanced, service is 5*****

Mark Glimm

we come here on a sunday night , order the food and dont have to wait long , great food

Eric Ayache

Visited just once, but I wanted to give a shout out to the salmon. So often in non-Asian places, salmon is overcooked until it's dry and tasteless. This was fully cooked through, still moist and yet the skin was super crispy. They celebrated the skin rather than treating it as something that needs to be not eaten (almost more Japanese than French in their handling of it). Very nice. Pasta as a side is a really nice choice and tasty (but I would like it to be thinner, less starchy, chewier, and more delicate).

David Chong

Best bruch in Kits though noisy.

Yum! YUM! YUMM! Au Comptoir has been on my list to try for ages and it certainly did not disappoint. We came to celebrate my birthday with a late dinner (around 8:30pm) and were seated immediately, without a wait. (Unfortunately, they do not take reservations.) We ordered a bottle of wine and enjoyed the following dishes: Tartare de Saumon ($17) – THREE AND A HALF STARS Fresh and smoked salmon tartare, gem lettuce and horseradish. My least favourite dish of the night, not because it wasn’t good but just because the other dishes were amazing. The salmon was fresh and the flavours were nice. It just didn’t WOW us like the other dishes. Bloc de Foie Gras ($20) – FOUR STARS Cured foie gras terrine with beetroot and apple. Generous block of foie gras with the fluffiest, lightest toasted bread I’ve ever had. The bread to terrine ratio was a bit off (not enough bread) but hey – plenty of foie gras to go around, so I’m not complaining. Duo de Veau – Veal ($34) – FIVE STARS Grilled loin of veal, glazed veal cheek, asparagus, potatoes, morels and spring onions. Again, very generous portions of veal! Flavours were awesome! Magret de Canard – Duck (32) – FIVE STARS Honey glazed duck breast, turnip, celeriac & potato gratin and rhubarb. Definitely the winner dish of the night! Portions were generous and the honey glaze on the thick duck skin really made this dish stand out! Reminded me of Peking duck skin.  Chocolate Lava Cake – FIVE STARS Since we came late in the evening, two of the desserts that we were eye-ing were completely sold out. We settled for the lava cake that turned out to be AMAZING. Which makes me wonder how good the other two desserts were! Service started out a bit slow in the beginning as it was quite busy, but still friendly in the French way ;) This is definitely going up there as one of my top favourite restaurants in Vancouver!

Nice bistrot, I like the French atmosphere. The food was good, I had the confit dusk salad which was very good. My partner had the burger but wasn’t super impressed with the meat but still liked it. The crème brûlée was delicious. We will go back to try other things on the menu. The staff is French and was very friendly. I would recommend to book when possible, the place is definitely busy! For summer, they have few tables outside :)

Stuart Rolland

Went there for brunch on Saturday. The bloody Caesar wasn't strong. The burger was okay

Kevin Chan

Had brunch a couple of days ago. Had the sablefish on toasted brioche with poached eggs and the Parisienne ham on waffle. They were good but not spectacular. Taste-wise, was not as flavourful compared to what you would expect for French cuisine. Also for the sablefish, it was actually mashed up into a spread on the toast...only got a light sablefish flavour and not much of the buttery taste you normally would get. I would have preferred even a small filet grilled on top instead of brioche toast instead. However, the poached eggs were perfectly cooked. Don't mind trying dinner next time but for brunch, not sure.

Sharon J

I had dinner there today. The service was terrible. It took 10 minutes just to get a menu. I ordered French breakfast tea which came with out any sugar or cream by the time I was able to flag my waiter to get some sugar another 10 mins had passed.. the tea was very good. As a starter I had thon marine and that was amazing my main came highly recommend by the waiter wagyu beef. It came with 2 pieces of beef which had a lot of texture and was very chewy! I didn't enjoy it. I ate one piece because I paid 36 dollars for it but and my jaw was sore so I didn't eat the second piece which was even worse when I tried to cut into it. The waiter never checked on me the whole time I was there and never asked me if I enjoyed anything I ordered. When I asked for the check he did ask if I was done and I told him that I can't eat it because it's too chewy, he replies to me that it's not suppose to be be chewy and brought me The bill. I did tip because I plan to return for brunch but I do hope the service is different and it doesn't take 2 hours to have brunch like it did with dinner.

Tres bien. All good ... croque madam and croque monsieur are first rate, service is professional, courteous and friendly. Been twice, will go again. Nice atmosphere ... love the uniform.

Amy Jarrah

I really love the atmosphere here. Our server was so nice and attentive. We ordered some fresh oysters, steak tartare, duck confit salad, and a brunch plate. The oysters dish was my favourite. I really wanted to love the steak tartare but I felt like it was a bit under seasoned.

Kyle McGraw

What a lovely meal! The hot chocolate and dessert were our favourite items. The risotto tasted a bit salty to me, but I still love it. It is one of my favourite spots in the neighbourhood.

Such a cute place that transport you to the streets of Paris with the small bistro tables. The way they have it set up on the sidewalk patio will be such a vibe in the summer to people watch. Brunch is always a delight there. Their croissants are from Beaucoup Bakery which in my opinion have one of the best croissants in the city. Slightly disappointed they don’t make it in house but they do proof and bake Beaucoup’s dough in house. But the rest of the brunch menu is delicious!

Boris Wertz

Expensive but really good. A small travel to France.

The service was great, my fries were undercooked and the burger was just ok. Lovely place, good drinks and atmosphere though. I specifically went for the fries though was I had heard they were amazing, so, a bit disappointed.

Best French cuisine in town. Me and hubby first time came here and both had a great dining experience. The waiter is very interesting and food is beyond description especially soup of the day and duck leg. We felt satisfied and definitely will come again.

Some friends kindly took my wife and me there on June 10th at about 8:45 pm. Luckily there was a table for four as it was very busy. No bookings possible - you have to take your chances. Geoffrey (from Paris) looked after us very well indeed. He recommended the lamb savarin (on special) - the best lamb I've had in decades. The ladies had duck and pronounced it first class. My mate had the chicken and liked it very much - he and I also had the salmon terrine, which was tops too. We had two bottles of the Jupiter Cote du Rhone as it was so good. The noise apart (many Vancouver restaurants are noisy if they are good), it is a very fun place with excellent food and service - we'll go again for sure.

Jeremy S

Loved it. Hopefully we can come back soon!! The staff is great and unpretentious, food is delicious! ❤️

Bruna Ostheimer

Good food but some options are way over priced. There's definitely something snooty about their energy. I've had better French food with larger portion sizes for similar prices. The duck was a good portion but I didn't try it. I had the risotto, nothing to write home about; the wild mushrooms were sparce and not a hint of porcini as you might expect, and the truffle flavor was lost or wasn't in the dish as described. House salad - 9$ a stack of mixed greens with simple mustard/vinegar dressing. Meh - don't need to go back.

Professional service that might come off somewhat cold, but the food & drink are phenomenal. A modern classic French restaurant on West 4th.

Tasty French food in a nice atmosphere with great service. Prices are a bit on the high side and the pommes frites are too dry for my taste. I recommend the Bavette with the red wine demiglace , which comes with wonderful potato dumplings instead of frites.

Fantastic food. Excellent atmosphere. Authentically French. It can be very busy, so make sure to get your name down on the waiting list as the wait is definitely worth it! Dessert was also a dream. Can’t remember our server’s name, but he was wonderful. Our table was well taken care of!

Mostafa PAKPARVAR

We ordered Fish of the day for lunch. The fish was undercooked (fish meat is pink color)and has to be re-cooked!!! It is hard to believe. I am so disappointed.

Sonny Chee

Ugh. So much gendering. Food was only medium, not great for the price. But maybe other things would be better than the brioche I ordered.

Kez Sherwood

Parisian vibe with an underated bar experience. Intimate morning coffee/pastry spot if you want to avoid the hoards at 49th Parallel down the block.

I went last night for a special dinner with my partner. The evening was as pleasant as a chill summer breeze while resting on the beach at Côte d’Azur. We had Vercingetorix Salad (reminded me to my favourite Asterix and Obelix comics) Bison Tartare. And the 3 unbeatable main dishes; sable fish, lamb rack and Quails. Everything was outstanding, well balanced in flavours and with a pretty presentation. Our server Mathieu blew our minds. He guided us through the entire dinner, telling us little facts here and there about any dish. Explaining us stories from his childhood and how his mom used to cook this and that and pairing our food with majestic wines. Really knowledgable guy. Cote du Rhône very special. We will be back after this extraordinary treat.

Patrick C

Great croissants, disappointed they have no drip coffee.

Mack Benz

C'est domage! Owner and staff centric. Poor service out of the kitchen even when the establishment is less than a third full. Food is good if you actually get it. We had to leave without a simple dessert that couldn't be delivered within 20 minutes. Don't ask for a decent glass that's displayed right next to you when drinking your Pinot Noir. The response you'll get is 'the owner won't allow it unless you're drinking a really good wine'. Funny, I had hoped I was drinking a decent wine. The whole experience reminded me of how bad Paris was with regard to service attitude in the 1970s

Danni Kirstine Skou Svennesen

One of my new favorites. Have you been to a restaurant where they made simple food, but the secret is that every little detail has been paid extra attention? Fantastic sweetbreads, smoked salmon and fried duck wings. I highly recommend this place. If possible, for a party of 2, get the little table by the window. It's made on top of an old Singer sewing machine.

Got a treat for father’s day. Casual fresh place , nice French wine list. Food is delicious especially duck , and nice service .

The service was nice and the food was fabulous. I love the vibe and their wine ~ except that the portion of the steak was abit too small. I viewed the photos of others which usually served 5-6 slices… mine only contained 4small slices. It’s suspicious ???? but other than that, everything is perfect. (Highly recommend their duck !!)

Steve Morgan

The service was terrible. I was left waiting at my table for at least a half hour. The food was okay but the waiter did not explain the menu. Maybe this is the French fashion to treat customers badly. I am personally not impressed.

Joyeeats. ca

Walked in for dinner on Sunday at around 5pm. We got seated right away as the restaurant was empty. By around 5:30 most of the restaurant was full (as half the tables are used for social distancing between each other). By 6 the wait time was around an hour. Looks like there were COVID protocols in place as all the staff and kitchen staff were wearing masks and there was distance between the tables. We were given complimentary bread right after we ordered. We ordered 3 dishes to share. The foie gras terrine with rabbit was a really good balance of savouriness and sour/sweetness. The caramelized fruit cut the decadence if the foie gras and went really with the brioche bread. My main complaint was that there wasn't enough brioche for the amount of foie gras. The tuna tartare paired really well with the addition of the fresh grapes on top and bits of sweet corn. The lamb crusted with herbs was well accompanied with the creamy funnel puree. The lamb was super tender and had a bit of lamb gamey-ness which I really liked. We finished off the night with the Paris Brest. I've had this once before from Au Comptoir and really enjoyed it. This time the choux pastry was crispier and went well with the praline cream. Surprisingly the caramel on the bottom did not make this dish too sweet. The service was really friendly and fast. They explained everything on the menu well and brought everything really fast. Our water was also never empty. Would definitely recommend having dessert here as well as almost anything on the menu

All front staff is french speaking which creates nice ambiance. Vintage interiors add to the charm. Service is great but the wait is loong. Get ready for a 30 min front door wait and 2 hours at the venue. Better get appies before the main meal to keep hunger under control. Mains are cooked very good and the meats are tender. Would recommend duck breast and antrecot.

Fantastic! Arrived at 6pm on a Thursday night and had no line ups. Wonderful classic French bistro serving the usual fare. A standout was the dover sole they had! Would definitely return.

Christian Whiticar

I called ahead to see if my partner and I could go for dinner. The hostess said that would be no problem for the time discussed so we began making our way there. Once we arrived they said it would be at least a 45min wait and there was no room at the bar - I was fairly frustrated that I was given conflicting information only 15 minutes earlier on the phone, strike 1. Another evening we decided we would go for desert and drinks. We did not have a reservation and showed up on a Thursday night about 1 1/2 hours before they closed. The hostess insisted on asking us what the nature of our visit was and was reluctant to seat us when I said we weren't planning on eating a full course dinner. We eventually were seated after "confirming" it was okay despite the fact there were at least 5 open tables of 2 in the restaurant. The waiter was very good, however, the desert and cocktails were honestly just okay. Strike 2 - wont' be seeing you guys again anytime soon.

C K

I had 30 minutes to kill before meeting up with family and it was pouring rain. I asked for a seat at the bar which had 4 empty seats and was told that the bar is only for "dinner customers" and that I wouldn't be welcome for a drink. I would have had at least one cocktail and some appetizers but being turned away in favor of "dinner customers" really turned me off. In addition, I was offered zero explanation other than "the bar is for dinner groups." What's the point of a bar if as a solo diner I can't sit? Doess place shame you if you want to just come in for a drink and a snack? Are they struggling that hard to get by? Seems like it. I've never been turned away as a solo diner before in Vancouver. Seems like the server and bar staff were cherry picking big groups for tips. Would not recommend.

James Flemming

Absolutely TERRIBLE service and food! The fish I ordered smelled spoiled, it was dry and over cooked. I have never experienced such a offensively bad dish before. The waitress could barely speak english and messed up our order 3 times. The owner Julienne refused to do anything about the food I sent back and I was forced to pay for a meal I could not eat! He is an arrogant man with no regard for customer service. There are many restaurants in Vancouver that are fantastic, I would not waste your time here!

Blackrose 78

What? A french restaurant that charges you for bread after the first tiny basket? I'm french and have never seen such a thing before. For the French, that's like charging for utensils! The food was otherwise fine, but nothing to write home about.

lanfei zhao

Service was absolutely horrible. They do not take reservations and when we walked in they told us to wait 30 minutes, our turn came after 1.5 hours. The server didn’t care when I complaint to her.

Patrick Burns

Fresh ingredients, not too salty, and exceptional service.

Nathan W

Food is OK but service is extremely obnoxious. We came during brunch period (around 4:15pm), had food & wine for about $150 and wanted to stay longer, spanning into dinner period )past 5pm), and offered to spend more for a full dinner menu but the waiter resisted and called the senior waiter/manager who basically threw us out. I clearly offered him 2 options: either we order from the dinner menu now (around 4:50pm) or we leave. He asked us to leave. I will never enter this restaurant again. P.S. they have an extremely aggressive wine pouring policy: the moment a waiter sees you take a sip of wine, they rush to top up your glass (surely - to make more money on the greater quantity of wine you drink; or even to get you drunk and lose control over how much you spend).

Andrei Vyrypaev

Got here at 11:30am on a busy Sunday afternoon for brunch and it was packed! We were lucky we didn’t wait long but there was a big line up after we left. Staff felt a bit cold and they didn’t seem like they wanted to be there at all. But the food was awesome! Wanted something light with less carbs so got the confit duck salad and there was plenty of duck and veggies to make it filling still. My friend got the ling cod brioche dish and she liked it as well.

Bill Lum

I took a friend to dinner at Au Comptoir last night. The whole evening was fabulous. The service was gracious and generous. We ordered the fois gras, duck pate, Marget de Carnard and the Bavette Pommes Dauphines with the roquefort. It was all delicious and flawlessly prepared. This bistro is a perfectly unpretentious slice of France. Definitely going back.

Was disappointed that they only serve their brunch menu on sundays. Really wanted to try their lunch. All in all, the brunch was not as good as we hoped. The french toast tasted bland. The salad was good. And the fish Benny plate was bland and tasteless as well. We also got oysters as appetizers but they were seriously so tiny! The ambience is good but I wouldn’t eat brunch here again....

The toast that the salmon was on was very creamy and melts in your mouth. Service was fun. Tons of baked pastries and desserts too!

Don’t ever try going to this place. It’s a first come first serve system supposedly but they do not have a system at all. They wrote my name for 4 people on the board and was the only name on it before they told us to come back 15 minutes later. We came back with multiple names on the board and they seated 2 other groups of 4 people before us. Such a bad way to treat customers. Made me think they ignored us because of our skin colour.

Food and service here are amazing, the waiters are all knowledgeable about the food and specials. Since it is a smaller location there is an attention to detail. The food at this location is amazing and everything is fresh and delicious. This would be perfect for date nights but bigger parties might need to book ahead of time or risk waiting a long duration.

Everything about this place is perfect. My glass was never empty. The foie gras was amazing. We shared the mussels, gnocchi and Bavettte steak. The steak was to die for and the potato side was also delicious. We got it with a red wine sauce which I highly recommend. The mushroom gnocchi was light and fluffy and the sauce was rich and delicious. The mussels we're quite large. The sauce was very good and very garlicy but they were definitely not the star dish.

I was very excited to check out this place after seeing the reviews....That being said this was our experience: started off with some very good cocktails. We ordered the terrine appetizer. Which in taste was good but was hard in texture and did not spread well on bread. Cocktails were very good, wine very good but here’s where it really turned: We ordered the tenderloin special and the duck as our 2 mains. The duck was a decent portion, cooked very nicely but lacked any taste or seasoning. The other items on the plate were very! Burnt and purée was extremely sweet. Now my fiancé, being a chef himself, had no problem saying he was not satisfied with the standard of this meal. In explaining we got a very defensive!!! response to our reasoning. Yes, chard vegetables are one thing but we know the difference between chard and burnt. We did get an apology but afterwards we witness this fellow looking angry, slamming cups and dishes around, talking under his breath. Super uncomfortable to watch. I get really uncomfortable with confrontation so you can say the rest of my night there was ruined. My fiancé, who works in the business, was shocked and found it totally unacceptable behavior in front of a room of costumers (obviously) so he says to our waiter (who was delightful btw) "is he mad at us? What is going on here?" 5 mins later the guy comes and apologizes. Said he was just disappointed that dish was sent out. In no way were we disrespectful or rude we just could not justify paying for a dish that wasn’t up to standard or straight out not edible. Honestly, things would have been fine, things can happen in the kitchen BUT the response and reaction?! Totally unnecessary and unacceptable! turned us off completely to any the positives we did experience. Extremely disappointing.

(Translated) Yesterday I felt quite tired after work. I want to recall the relaxing time in France. Therefore, I chose this French restaurant that I have seen for a long time. The previous French dining experience is very relaxing and comfortable and will not urge you to leave. I also spend more time. Come here for a little money to relax. I ordered iced coffee and cheese yesterday evening. It was delicious, and the atmosphere was very good. After about to relax and feel comfortable, the waiter put the receipt directly on my table (I guess it was He gave me the receipt in less than 20 minutes?) I understand that there are many people during dinner time. Maybe it is not in his interest that I order dessert? When she left the receipt, I ignored her. I was going to come and charge me in about two minutes... I think the ambient meal is 100 points. As for the waiter’s feeling of wanting you to leave as soon as possible, it’s not that I am in France. Authentic french bistro amazing food fast service, on the pricey side. Not much space between tables, but if you're looking for great brunch and the feel of Paris you get it here.

Fantastic bistro, no reservations though so show up early or late if you don't like waiting. If you like caesar salads, don't miss the Vercingetorix salad, their take on it.

My new favourute spot for brunch AND dinner! Wonderful service, delicious cuisine. The ambience was akin to being in Paris.

Very bad and rude service. left us waited 40 mins at the door when there is a clean table. There were another 2 ppl in line waiting for table and there is a table clean all the time but the receptionist keeps ppl in line to wait for no reason. This place left ppl waiting to keep a line up outside, food not worth the wait. Probably just lucky to be on 4th street. Not impressed.

The brunch burger and fries are above and beyond! Also dessert.

Fantastique! What a pleasant and authentic Parisian experience in the heart of Vancouver, unlike any other French fare found in BC. You absolutely have to see the namesake of the restaurant — the “comptoir” (French for counter) — a unique 25-foot long pewter countertop, specially made in Paris and shipped over. The food is flavourful with great portion sizes, and desserts are delectable! I ordered the Bavette steak with pommes dauphin, which was perfectly seared. Dessert was topped off with a light flavourful eclair. I will definitely be back many times!

Lovely little French bistro serving delicious food and friendly laid back ambiance. The wine list could do with some improvement but the good was on par. Duck was our favorite dish of the night. Worth revisiting next trip in Vancouver to share a casual intimate meal with good friends.

My server’s attitude ruined the night: we had politely requested to be moved to a bigger table twice, first time we were told the empty big table was for COVID restriction, the second time I asked when there was another table opened up and was straight up told no and then he proceeded to seat another new pairs of customer who just came through. The food is good as expected at a place with such price tag nothing surprisingly good or bad.

Visited the restaurant for the coffee and dessert. We enjoyed them very much. The restaurant had a very chic setting and made you feel as if you were sitting in a cafe in Paris. Tartare de Saumon ($17) -Fresh and smoked salmon tartare, gem lettuce and horseradish. My least favourite dish of the night, not because it wasn't good but just because the other dishes were amazing. The salmon was fresh and the flavours were nice. It just didn't WOW us like the other dishes.

While in Vancouver for our anniversary we planned an early dinner here for our 'big night' and it was everything we could have hoped for. Fantastic dishes and top notch service, and as much help as could be given to making sure even our 2 year old had a great meal. Antoine (server) was playful/fun and both he and the bartender were highly professional. High praise for the Vercingetorix salad (practice saying it once or twice, in case Antoine quizzes you, haha), the Entrecotes frites and the Ratatouille. Wish we lived in the neighborhood - we'd be here often.

My wife and I ate at Au Comptoir last Thursday. We live in Calgary and were pleased to find this fine little restaurant on 4th. Overall, the experience was disappointing. The server who took care of us at first was really nice, then a her colleague took over, and it became a true situation of being left behind... The food was ok with a feeling of bitterness from service, we won't be back.

This is one of our favourite restaurants in Vancouver! It’s super charming, casual, and you can tell the food is executed with intent. There’s no fluff in their dishes, we love how simple and delicious everything is. We always have a good time here after a long day of work, or just to catch up with friends over good food and wine! I have never been to a restaurant with so many shamelessly rude people working in it. The first time we came here it was for coffee and a snack during the summer and every interaction with the waiter was unpleasant. He kept acting like we were bothering him - even when we asked for a spoon to eat the soup we ordered, since he forgot. We chalked it up to the waiter having a bad day and paid our bill and left. We decided to give it another go today and it was even worse. The server/host/whoever he is that sat us down was rude from the moment we walked through the door. Completely unprofessional and obnoxious. He sat us at the bar for lunch and the bartender was just as rude. It was almost 2pm and we asked if we could order a salad from the main menu (rather than the brunch menu) and we received a drawn out "no" that was drenched in attitude, arrogance, and disgust, as if even the thought of us asking about the menu was a waste of his precious time. Having had a similar experience the previous time we were there, we decided we had had enough of their arrogance and left to go eat elsewhere. They do not care about their clients at all. At one point today, the server arrogantly said "Look around, the place is full, it's obviously good". The attitude of the staff here reflect this general way of thinking - they have good food (although I wouldn't know because we never really had the chance to try it) so they don't care about their service whatsoever. I wish I had looked at the reviews before even going here the 1st time because I never would have walked through their doors had I known this is how they treat their clients, and I never will again. A good restaurant is not just about the food, but also the experience. I don't care how good the food is, if I'm going to be treated like sh**, I will take my business elsewhere.

A great place for French cuisine in Kitsilano! Had the sweet breads and steak. Sweet breads were well paired with the poached egg but the steak took the cake! Wow! This restaurant is fabulous. I came here with my mum, who was so excited to eat here, and both of us were blown away. She ate the scallops and I had the duck, and my goodness was it fantastic. For dessert, we shared the gingerbread crème brûlée and it was to DIE FOR. Oh and even better than our sublime meal, our service was amazing. Neils was our server, and he was so polite, attentive, kind, and funny. He was on top of it, and went above and beyond for service, even when someone came inside screaming about covid regulations, he and all the staff handled it professionally and with kindness. So extremely excited to return, thank you to all the staff here! So fantastic.

The owner/manager is unforgivingly rude. My steak which I ordered medium rare was quite bloody. I had already cut several pieces to see if there were any acceptable bits but there weren't. The waiter took the steak back to be "redone" and within minutes the same cut pieces were returned, some still rare, some grey. The meat was inedible. The manager came to the table and proceeded to lecture me very rudely about how well his chef cooks and that the meat was just perfect. When I told him it was inedible his response was that I was going to have to pay for it regardless of whether I could eat it or not, because why should the restaurant carry the cost. Because the steak was awful and I couldn't eat it, thats why. Customer service??? Non-existent. I have since heard that the word is already around about the behavior of this owner so I will be interested to see in the long run how many more people (besides our party of 5 and all of our friends, acquaintances, business contacts and people connected to us on social media) , will boycott Au Comptoir.

Went to Au Comptoir for brunch with a friend and the vibes in this cute French cafe located in Kitsilano reminded me of Paris ???? They don’t take resos and will only let you have a table once everyone has arrived at the restaurant. The sablefish was ok but the duck confit salad was really refreshing and the waffle was superrr delicious!! ????The staff is really friendly too. The atmosphere of the restaurant, the staff and their service and attitude are your typical parisian cafe. Absolutely amazing and enjoyable experience. In my opinion It is a rare find here in Vancouver. The appetizer, wine, main dish and the desert were all great tasting and made with lots of care and passion. A semi casual fine dining experience for decent prices. We got the scallop for appetizer, steak and poached fish for main dish, red and white wine and choux pistache cerise with a cup of cappuccino to finish it off nicely. Would definitely love to try their lunch and brunch menu soon.

Au Comptoir has bee a staple for my friends and family for years. The excellent food and informal but refined atmosphere would be enough to have any discerning diner coming back, but what really makes Au Comptoir stand out is the characterful, authentic, and earnest serving staff. On our last visit, our server was nothing but jovial despite having to deal with two incredibly rude and fussy guests sitting next to us. It's that kind of service that earns Au Comptoir its well deserved reputation for excellence.

What a gem Au Comptoir is. Simple (looking but exquisitely prepared), tasty, food. Classic French cuisine. Very busy place. Glad I showed up before 1800. Definitely a must try if you are in Vancouver. Closest thing to dining at a bistro in Paris outside of France. Everything was perfect. Thank you to the staff for transporting me back to Paris!

A relatively new French diner style restaurant started by people from France. A type of restaurant one finds on side streets in Paris. We were here for lunch and then once again for dinner. The menu is interesting. Not a very big menu but they have specials everyday. I don't think they take reservation. Come before 6 pm for supper. They have good beer and wine. The atmosphere and the decor is inviting. They use old sewing machine stands for dining table legs! For dinner, we shared Salad Vercingetorix, pan fried Salmon and lamb steak which was the special for that evening. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Good service from friendly staff.

So we very recently visited one of our favourite restaurants in Vancouver to dine in such a quality experience and with a very delicious cuisine , based on the French Bistro Exploration and happily available here in Vancouver .. met at the front door with humour and warmth .. the whole evening was very special and all the Covid requirements were met..again the food was outstanding, especially at the end of the evening with my dessert— Fondant Au Chocolat..then some months later we make our time in this special restaurant at the lunchtime and enjoy a hamburger with really tasty fries and croque du jour.. we have travelled in France and these meals brought us back to a wonderful atmosphere and delightful environment which reminded us of communities like Nancy, Arles or Arcachon…we will be celebrating another dining experience here soon …

I will give 5 stars to this fabulous restaurant, and 5 stars to the chef and kitchen. Nice and cozy restaurant. We were a group of six and all the foods were Amazing! It was my birthday so We ordered a small lava cake as a birthday cake, I think it would be more professional and pleasant if they wouldn’t charge us for the cake ( I believe 13 $) when our bill was over 650$. Anyhow will definitely come back.

Anthony Yeung

The food is good solid French bistro food, but the service is so unacceptable that it gets one star. I went to this restaurant quite a few times, had somewhat mediocre service a few times (although friendly), but kept going back given I liked the food and proximity to where I live. Then my last two visits - in the first I went for a dessert and coffee. The dessert was so sweet it was inedible. I complained, told the waiter and pastry chef, and they didn't offer to replace the dessert, and they still charged me the full amount on the bill. I found this pretty shocking customer service, but decided to try one more time. I ordered a dish that had ratatouille as its vegetable component. I asked for the ratatouille to be exchanged with any other vegetable component and the waiter refused, then said he would ask the chef, and then came back saying no substitutions. I was shocked - I didn't ask them to cook anything different, I just wanted one component not on the dish. That's simply unacceptable. I realized that clearly they don't want my business, and clearly there is a lot of ignorance at the restaurant about what is appropriate customer service so I haven't been back. It's too bad, because it could be a wonderful restaurant.

Christopher Roth

Excellent bistro style cuisine and professional waiter service. We had French onion soup, salmon, skirt steak, and the risotto. Every bite was delicious.

This is French food interpreted in a North American manner... A bit off from the real French food. The charcuterie board had no cheese, there was too little bread for the items on the board, and everything had too much fat. Indeed, French food is cooked in fat, but every French dish should have a sour part to balance the richness of the fat.

I heard their brunch is great I might try this in the near future. Just a couple highlights 1. Duck - This was one of my favorite dishes of the night, It was cooked to perfection with a nice that paired well with the duck 2. Sablefish - Dish was cooked perfectly again, only thing I would enjoy a bit more is having a bit more of a sear of the fish. However, that's more personal preference 3. Scallops - This dish was to die for. It had a perfect balance of flavors and different textures that made the dish enjoyable to eat 4. Foie Gras - I loved this dish as well, I just wish it came with a bit more bread as the Foie Gras was very rich and I couldn't finish it on it's own Service This would be a 5 star review but the only complaint I had was the dinner felt a little rushed. However, it's understandable as was Valentines Day.

Great service, terrific coffee, wonderful fresh croissants. Eggs and smoked salmon were tasty.
