Tempura was pretty good expect it was not as crispy as I had hoped. The service was fantastic and our server was super friendly. The ramen smelled amazing so I would definitely try that they next time.

Arthur Chiang

Not worth a trip to downtown for their tempura. The tempura crumbs are too thick and some of the items are soaky esp. the octopus cake. I will just go to the North York location for their ramen. The one star is for their service.

Ivan Chau

Good food, solid lunch that's not too heavy. Tempura sauce is noteworthy, flavourful. Chicken karaage comes with a tasty dip, good for one person or to share between two. Service is excellent. Calm atmosphere for lunch hours on a Wednesday.

2020/09/01 update : Decided to get takeout to see if things have changed and the amount of rice they give is absolutely pathetic. It's not even 1/3 of the bowl. Old review: Way overpriced for what you get. Not only was the shrimp tempura not as crunchy as expected, it was also pretty small in size. The rice was not great either. Disappointing.

Joanne Teo

Small menu. Tempura was fresh. Excellent service.

I tried “ Dual Donburi “ which is such a great combination idea of Tendon!! Added Onsen Tamago Tempura which servers recommended me and it was superb!!!!!(must try) Tempura butter coating is really crispy and nicely light. I definitely come back for tempura udon set menu next time;)!!!!

A few weeks ago I came to visit Akimitsu and I absolutely love their donburi bowls. Even though it’s stacked up with tempura it doesn’t feel overly greasy and the food here is so good! Absolutely love it here! To find more tasty eats, follow me and check out my page on Instagram @hungrysimo

Their tempura is to die for. Very good portions with friendly service. Shrimp tempura is definitely the star of the meal.

Ordered pickup via Ritual. Had Edomae tendon. Good quality and portion. My tendon included shrimp, salmon, mackerel, squash, pumpkin and green pepper tempura, while the variety may vary.

SOLD OUT MOST ITEMS Came to restaurant @ 5:45 PM , Dinner opens @ 5 PM Came here and was anticipated to try their Prawn Tempura Udon, (heard this chain was famous in Japan) Waitress said their sold out of udon ... So we Tried to order Beef and Prawn don and she said beef was sold out... So dinner time starts at 5 PM If your restaurant was already sold out of udon Would you prep ahead and make sure dinner time still had udon or beef available? Ordered chicken karaage and it was so dry Big disappointment.

Limited menu but their tempura tastes amazing. Not too oily but still crispy. It has a nice environment, their staff was incredibly friendly and accomodating. Try their seafood as there are options that's rarely seen in other stores. It's a bit pricy but definitely worth it, would come back again.

Tempura Don is very popular Japanese quick eats. And finally can taste it in Toronto. I personally think they made good tempura but not authentic enough. I still give 5 stars since this is in Toronto, I don’t expect too much.

Maybe I had my hopes too high, but overall it was... well, not that hot. I ordered the katsudon - the pork was juicy and breading was good, but the soup-sauce it was served in was very salty, and the onions were hardly cooked. My partner ordered a full tempura set: The shrimp (which is meant to be the centre-piece) was sub-par, not very crispy at all, and cooked to rubberiness. That said, the vegetable tempura was done well. Sadly, the biggest failure was the vegetable kakiage ordered as a side. I don't know if it was re-deep fried, or just not tended to very carefully in the fryer, but it was a greasy mess, almost damp with oil. COVID's made for a rough staffing solution, and I might come back next year to try again and update my review.

Okay, so I have an addiction problem - I am severely addicted to bubble tea and Japanese food. I could have these two every day for every meal. There's a variety of Japanese cuisine here in Toronto. Some specializes in ramen, omakase, donburi, sushi, sashimi, udon, you get the idea. I have no favourites as I'm just a huge fan of ALL Japanese foods! I will admit that it's been a LONG time since I've had good tempura. Most places with tempura...no, no good. Came here on a Sunday and again on a Monday around... I'd say around 12:00 - 1:30 for both times? We were able to order from both the ramen & tempura menu - I've heard that this wasn't the case when the first opened up (something about ramen on top floor and tempura on the bottom - something like that), so i'm not sure if it's because there wasn't a whole lot of people during that time (which is a good thing for me, as we really dislike line ups/being squished in our seats) or because they changed the way it was originally set up...but yay for me!! Decor was...really meh. Nothing fancy or screams out WOW. Kind of dark inside if you ask me, I mean for your average patrons its okay, but nowadays, everyone wants to take a nice picture of what they're eating. Okay, so to their menu. They've got two different pages for their Tempura and rice options: Page 1: Tempura Set (price range: $13.50 - $19.50) - there's four or five different options (depending on the number of shrimps, veggies, seafood, you want). This options includes fresh seafood/veggie tempura served with miso soup, rice on the side, and tsukemono (pickled veggies). Page 2: Tendon (price range: $12.50 - $18.50) - again there's four or five different options (same as above, depending on the number of shrimps, veggies, seafood you want). This option serves the tempura over rice, miso soup, and no pickled veggies. So assuming that you order Ebi Tendon & a Ebi Tempura set, difference would be a buck - so technically it's a dollar more for their pickled veggies...I'm not a fan of pickled anything, so i wouldn't pay that back more... I guess some people don't like their tempura on top of their rice and maybe that's why they would go with the set instead... I don't know, that's got us confused for quite some time. Both times I went, i got the Akausa Tendon (1 shrimp, 1 salmon, 1 mackerel, 1 cuttlefish, 1 saba, 1 eggplant, 1 okra, 1 mushroom, and 1 mushroom). I wasn't a huge fan of tempura salmon - I found that it was too cooked for my liking. I like my salmon raw or semi cooked...NOT 100% cooked. Other than that tho, I love them - batter on each of those ingredients were thin and not too oily - with each bite, I could actually taste and bite into the ingredient instead of just the batter. A lot of Japanese restaurant that does tempura, over does it with the batter...thick and oily. Here, this was not the case. Hubby ordered their Monday/Tuesday/Sunday Special (price $19.50): Wagyu & Angus Beef Shoyu (see picture for detailed description on menu). Hmmm he was not a fan and i could understand why. Beef was...honestly, not that special. It literally tasted like...beef tendon in a chinese noodle place. Kind of felt like it was a waste of money going with that ramen. I've been back here twice already, so i would totally come back a third time :)

Delicious! Two specialties are offered here, ramen and tempura don. We had both and were not disappointed. The ramen broth was so flavourful and the noodles perfectly chewy, some of the best ramen noodles I've had in Toronto! The tempura was expertly battered and fried. Tried a lot of interesting seafood tempura here but shrimp is still my favourite. Wonderfully friendly and helpful staff. Will definitely be back!

M 2MOON

Amazing tempura. You can different combos of the tempura. They offer shrimp, salmon, sea bass, and squid. Loved all of them. You have the option of the tempura set or the tendon (bowl). Extremely nice and clean atmosphere. Service is extremely prompt and helpful.

I love eating tempura and their Prawn Tempura is the greatest I have ever tasted so far. Even a friend of mine who has eaten a lot of tempuras and gone to Japan and have experienced authentic tempura said it's really a delicious take on this dish. I always go back whenever I am downtown!

Best tempura I've had

Angela Han

We got the Asakusa Tendon (2 prawns, 3 seafood which included salmon, eel, and another white fish, and 3 vegetables). We were overall disappointed with the quality. The tempura was quite soggy and because it came with the sauce drizzled on top already which was also on top of the rice it was overly salty. The slices of the vegetables and fish was very thin and not great value in my opinion. I wish they also would have seasoned the rice because it tasted very plain on the parts without sauce. I would not recommend the seafood tempura other than the ebi, the veggie tempura tasted much better, because the fish felt kind of overcooked. Worth trying once for the experience but would not likely try it again.

Chuan Chee

The tempura weren't that great. The croquettes were pretty nice though. After eating in the restaurant we came out smelling like deep fried oil. I like Kushimaru a lot more, it's just down one block.

Megan Huang

Best tempura you can have in Toronto. Of course it's not as good as Miles Zezankyo, but the $20 Asakusa set worth every penny. The portion is surprisingly big.

Chyntia A.

The grand opening was Sun Jun 9, 11:30 am. They gave 60 free bowls of Ten Don (tempura on rice) and a small sample of sake to the first 60 customers. Then it was 50% off any bowls in the menu. This restaurant received the Zenkoku Donburi Grand Prix Gold Medal, 5 years in a row. They use good-sized portions of shrimp, salmon, mackerel, scallops, and fresh vegetables. They have a sister restaurant, Konjiki Ramen, also opened the same day and time. It is at the same address but it is upstairs. Both restaurants have the same owners and staff. However, I consider them different restaurants because they don't serve food from one restaurant to the other restaurant.

David Jung

Small menu because they know how to do tempura the right way!

Michelle M

Was so excited to try this tempura spot but it was a bit underwhelming for my first visit. Will definitely revisit though. Our table shared takoyaki and karaage. I was not use to having pickled veggies on top of takoyaki so I wasn’t a fan. I ordered the asakusa tempura udon set. I was expecting the udon to be hotter but it was room temperature. The tempuras were on the softer side, would prefer to have it more crunchy. Lineup outside is for both restaurants. Top floor is closed at the moment.

I ordered a variety of don - the Ebi tendon (5 prawns + 1 vegetable) and the Asakusa tendon (1 prawn + 4 seafood + 3 vegetables). On the side, I also had an order of Chicken Karaage. In terms of the actual taste of the tempura, I'd say that it didn't taste like anything special to me. The batter was light and crispy. The shrimp filling was not my favourite. I expected a meaty and chewy shrimp but only got bits of shrimp meat and a starchy consistency. The vegetable tempura I got was okra. It was very interesting to try. As for the Asakusa tendon, you get other seafood tempura - scallop, fish, and squid - but those weren't exactly anything different tasting. I think my meal was saved once i used their signature tempura sauce. You just drizzle the savoury sauce over your tempura and it becomes a flavour explosion.

Daniel Tse

Excellent tempura donburi (tendon). They were having trouble with the heat of the oil - which is key - the day I was there, but took the time to explain the delay. The restaurant doubles as a Konjiki ramen restaurant as well, so you have options!

Their tempura is so much better than anything else I have had in Toronto that it is easy to forgive some small flaws. The batter is subtle but flavorful. It doesn't fall apart as you eat and isn't overly crunchy. The tendon sauce lends a great flavor to the rice. Also they give you a reasonable amount of rice by default unlike most of the huge dons around here. The big downside is the fish. The shrimp and vegetables are great but each piece of fish was disappointing in its own way. Some things like the scallops being too tough will improve when they have been open longer. On the other hand I don't know if you can fix deep fried salmon except by picking one of the many fish that are a better fit for deep frying.

Michael Licht

The food is so tasty :) I’m gonna come back soon!

Brynna Yap

The food was delicious and the environment was very cozy. However, there could have been better service in explaining the menu as there are 2 different companies/restaurants operating in the same location. There is a ramen menu and a tempura menu.

Felix Pang

Great food and service. Bad seating, really uncomfortable.

Ryan M

Akimitsu definitely nails it in providing authentic and tasty tempura. The amount of batter is perfectly balance; it's crunchy and not over-powering, which allows you to savor the freshness of protein/veggies inside. It also comes with 3 types of salt and each provides a hint of different flavor, along with the regular tempura sauce. The tempura set comes with miso soup, salad, and pickles; which is reasonably priced. I came during a busy weekend lunch and the server kindly told me that it will be awhile (20 minutes) for my food to come out. It is a great initiative to let customer know in advance to avoid disappointment later on. So keep this in mind if you are coming during rush hour especially if you are in a large party. Overall, service was great and prompt.

Chet Zhong

Good tempura, good service. A must try!

Alison Jeon

I went here today as my first visit since my friend recommended. Me and my boyfriend ordered one ramen and tendon and onsentamago. Onsentamago was just okay, but the ramen which Shows on picture(I think one with red bawl is something with black donkotsu, the other one is with miso) Akasuka tendon was the best choice I guess because it comes with variety of seafoods and vegotables. I will recommend to ask server to give you soy sauce and spicy sauce becasue you might feel little greesy as you eat. Price is reasonable compare to quality and quantity of food. I will definitely recommend!! :)

We arrived around 7:30 pm on Friday evening, got seated and ordered right away. However, we still had to wait for 35 minutes for our food to come. The taste was soso, a bit on the oily side. Our clothes also smell like deep fried. I do not think it is worth the price. I will not return.

never thought I could find ten dons in Toronto that are as good as those in Asia! add on an onsen tamago to mix in with your rice for extra smoothness & nutty flavor!

TENDON = tempura + donburi (rice bowl). They have 2 choices: 1) Tendon, which is the tempura on top of a bowl of rice and soup. Or 2) Tempura set which is Tempura on the side with a bowl of rice, soup and salad. Once you get your bowl, they give you a bottle of tempura sauce that you can pour on top of your tempura. I still prefer dipping my tempura though because the bottom of my rice bowl ended up getting drenched in the sauce (but it’s not too bad since the sauce is good but just food for thought). The tempura is very light and delicious! $15-19 for a small bowl of rice and a few pieces of tempura is pretty steep. I would go here if you really love tempura and willing to spend the money for it. I can tell they put a lot of care into their food and buy high quality ingredients.

Edgardo Cruz

Perfect Tempura. It is a limited menu so every dish is done well. Light airy batter and very fresh fish. Good assortment and the veggie tempura is wonderful. The house made tendon is an ideal dipping sauce. This will become a regular spot for sure.

I really liked the tendons here! The tempura is fresh, cruncy and not too greasy. They give you a really nice sauce with the tendon and a small miso soup. Portions are (though they may not look it) sizeable. I liked the concise menu though I wish they had smaller portions for less $$; all their non-veg dishes are at about $17 and it's too much food. Another plus is that they share a menu with Konjiki ramen so that gives a lot more tasty food options.

Haiwen Ni

An ebi bowl is $18 which I consider a bit overpriced. They didn't use japanese rice and shrimp is not too fresh. I will still come back since they are the only place that serve tempura bowl

I was so excited to taste crispy and delicious tempuras there because I viewed lots of good comments and reviews from Akimitsu, but it was fairly average. Maybe my expectation was too high...???? but not bad. However, the price is little bit expensive.

Olga Gonzalez Latapi

The taste was actually like I was back in Japan, with the sauce and the selection of mixing vegetable with all the seafood with the prawn just was all togeather so satisfying and just mouth watering smelling and looking at the food getting served around while waiting!! Can’t wait to go back!!

Thank you for bringing authentic Japanese Ten Don to Toronto! Not just shrimp; juicy pieces of salmon, mackerel, scallops, fresh vegetables and more elevate this bowl over anyone else’s in the city. There was a lot of oily smoke/smell in the air, hope for the grand opening they can ventilate a little better.

I had Asakusa tendon. Tempura was not crispy but not soggy. But i wish they could make it crispier. Also missing a dish to hold tempura since it is hard to eat with only bowl given. Overall it was not bad and amount of food given was enough.

We got in right away considering it was the lunch hour on a week day. We were only 2 and wanted seats for tempura My friend and I were hungry so we ordered almost everything we could so we can share. Not a huge fan of the fried mushrooms. Not flavorful enough foe me and tasted more luke unsalted chips. Also wasn't a huge fan of the koroke fried mashed potatoes and beef. Flavour was too light. We absolutely loved the tempura. Batter was crispy, not oily and had a great flavour to it. 3 types of salt were provided, regular, match a and curry salts. I wasn't able to taste the difference between them all. Karate chicken with their wasabi mayo was a huge hit. The egg in sauce was also nice but a surprise as we were expecting g a hot dish. It was ice old but good. I can't have tempura anywhere else. I loved their seasonal fish tempura and will be dreaming of it till I can come back for more.

Mediocre ramen. Clam broth ramen is something innovative but it's more like a one time thing. $15 for a bow of ramen which is just some noodles and two slices of chashu is a bit too much. 40mins waiting before my ramen is here when the restaurant is only half full. If you're expecting those workday lunch, I don't think you'll get enough time. Serving is extremely slow too. They clearly need more hands at this place. Anyway, clam ramen is just okay and there are more places available around.

Claire Hoon

Good tempura at a good price. The shrimp/prawns are big and nicely prepared. However it was very ordinary, not much of a wow factor as I was expecting. The trays of food for each person came at different times. The tempura had a few varieties- shrimp, sea bass, salmon, squid ???? and some fried vegetables. Also came with rice and miso soup ????.

Jerry Lin

Amazing quality tempura at a good price. The breading was crispy, and not greasy, the ebi was well cooked, and the seafood options were really unique but perfectly cooked. The only disappointing aspect was the rice, the texture was closer to Jasmine rice instead of Japanese sushi rice. Overall, I would come back just for the amazing tempura, but I feel that they would deserve 5 stars if they could fix the rice.

Theresa L

Nah, overated. Expensive and food is medicore. Service was good. Servers were attentive and helpful to my questions. Did not like the yellow sauce that was on top of herring roe fish tempura(left). What was it? Uni?? Too fishy for me. Was not explained by the server when served. Overall I’m hesitant to give this place another try,,

Yikai Xu

Friendly staff, nice portion but a little bit expensive for what you get.

Sharon Dizo

Delicious and authentic. Every detail was perfect. Lovely staff too,

Bernard Quasaar

gotta say the best tempura I've had in Canada, and the food price is very reasonable, alcohol is abit on the expensive side.

joshua yuen

Decent tempura that easily outclassed many of its counterparts in Toronto. However, being in a city far away from the shores, it is evident that the restaurant has limited selection on types of fish they can serve. Deep fried salmon and herring really aren't the best options for tempura.

Jess W

Akimitsu specializes in tempura donburi (tendon) and is good to see a growing variety of Japanese food in Toronto. The small and focused menu gives you a couple of tempura options on rice or on it's own. Portion is rather small for the price. The sauce is also small but you can ask for a refill. And you'll need it because the tempura is lightly seasoned, so add as much or as little sauce and shichimi as you like. Service is friendly and prompt and food comes out pretty quick. Overall it tastes pretty good and worth a visit, but you may not be full after paying $20+ Feel free to head upstairs for ramen afterwards if you're not full, which was disappointingly a separate restaurant from Akimitsu even thought initial marketing showed them collaborating. Ramen with a small tendon would've been nice.

Barry W

Ordered the tendon with 2 shrimp 3 seafood and 3 veggie with onsen tamago added. I didnt find the egg that good. The dish is not cheap but the price is reasonable. Tasted great, would recommend the tendon with 5 prawn and 1 veggie and not add the egg.

Wlf Channel

Dare I say best ebi tempura in Toronto? I'll add the 5th star once liquor license is granted. Edited to add the 5th star as they now serve beer and liquor.

Really delicious tempura! Was not surprised as Konjiki is my favorite ramen restaurant in Toronto. I recommend getting 3 fishes instead of 3 shrimps as they give you 3 different fishes so its better on the palate.

Tried Akimitsu for the first time and was wowed by how good it was despite being takeout. On Ubereats you can order their menu from their sister restaurant, Konjiki ramen. The tempura stayed surprisingly crispy. I ordered the cold udon meal and loved the chewy noodle texture along with the flavourful toppings. I'll definitely order from them again and looking forward to eating there once restaurant dining is open again.

Serena Wong

Great place if you're craving tendon.

Vincent Chow

Ordered takeout in store, service was very slow and did not feel friendly... I got the Asakusa tendon, which had 2 shrimps, 3 seafood (herring roe, salmon, mackerel), and 3 vegetables (okra, pumpkin, and broccoli). Shrimps were the most tasty, big in size and the batter seemed different (added more egg?) from other items. Out of the 3 types of seafood and 3 vegetables, I only liked herring roe and okra. If I ever come back, I will probably just get the regular Ebi tendon (5 shrimps and 1 vegetable), plus a separate order of herring roe.

(Translated) My throat is stuffed with rice.. No, someone fried broccoli in a tendon. I'm not a person who hates broccoli, but as soon as I take a bite, the grassy smell is so strong that I lose my appetite. I'm a little skeptical about whether it's at home.. Overall concept is simple - tempura on rice. The tempura was not greasy and was light tasting. Be sure to not overdo on the tempura sauce on your rice as the rice absorbs a lot of it. They have a lot of tempura choices as well as other sides as well. Also veggie friendly as they do have veggie only tempura dishes.

Delicious tempura. Crispy but not oily, the taste is light which comes together with the delightful sauce. The rice is so good with the sauce also. Of the tempura pieces, I really enjoyed the roe, shrimp, and mushroom.

Sunny Ng

Agreed with the poster about the tempura bits being too thick. Ordered the tendon and udon set and while they both came out at the same time, my tendon set was significantly more cold and soggy than the latter. Not worth the price, and for some odd reason the broth from their ramen never comes hot. Lukewarm at best. Restaurant needs to clean their range hood filters...the entire restaurant was smokey and reeked of cooking oil. Came home still smelling like hot grease along with my clothes.

Sining Qin

My second time at akimitsu. Definitely the best tempura I have ever had. It is perfectly fried and has no excessive oil. Loved the onsen tamago to add to the rice. A wonderful experience everytime.
