Staffs in this restaurant were very rude. And we were not satisfied with the food too. I prefer not to go this restaurant again. (Response to the owner) First of all, we never said our order is for takeout. It is your responsibility to confirm or make sure whether our order is dine in or take away. I wish if we opted takeout, so that we wouldn’t have experienced such a bad time in our 12 days trip. Regarding the food, we have been to many restaurants and this is the worst we had in trip. I’m not even sure whether you guys served lamb or not. No texture of lamb. In your response, you have mentioned that we finished our food quickly and you came to a conclusion that your dish was yummy. Please understand that you are wrong. We were traveling and we all were hungry, so we had it full but that doesn’t mean that your food was good. We had no other choice at that moment. You guys were not at all friendly to the level that we felt like running away from your restaurant instead of complaining about the food because we know there is no point in letting you guys know. Instead, we prefer to use this platform to let other people know how horrible you guys are. Our trip coordinator is the one who handles the payments, you guys had no patience to wait for him to come from washroom. You guys stopped my friends and asked to pay immediately for the pops. I would not have mentioned if you guys knew to ask professionally and in a nice manner. ( Please note that we paid for 8 biriyanies before eating) Please understand that business is not just about making money and it’s a service too.

Hands down one of the best restaurants in the city. Thunder Bay is blessed to have two major Indian food restaurants, and both of them are magnificent. The food here is always top notch and to die for. Everyone here is so friendly, and has great recommendations. I can't talk this place up enough.

We ordered take-out and ate by the water front. This was our first visit to Masala Grille and they did not disappoint. They had a good selection of tasty gluten free options for my wife and I had the kahrai lamb. The lamb was awesome and the portions were generous. All in all, it made for a great mid week date night. We will be going back again and again. No photos, we were too hungry to take them.

We had to wait more than an hour for the food. we let the staff know that we can't wait anymore and that we will pay for our beverage, they even took 15 mins to get the bill. Even then the staff did not even apologized once. Service was very bad .

Been here three times before and every time the food was amazing and the staff is top notch. My favorite, the Lamb Rogenjosh. This place is a must when you are in Thunder Bay. I’ve ordered takeout from here four times, mostly on the weekends. They can be quite busy on the weekend but it’s always worth the wait. The food is incredible and all of the staff are friendly and accommodating. Chicken korma spicy, tandoori chicken and pakoras are favourites in our household.

We were passing through Thunder Bay and had heard rave reviews about Masala Grille so we thought we would stop in... The restaurant itself is in a stunning well kept Heritage building...A must see! The ambience and decoration are the finest of authentic Indian culture The staff were quick, friendly on the ball... They went above and beyond to serve. This is a very busy place but they were on top of their game The food.... Followed suit .. With wonderful presentation... Busting with flavor! Yum ... Wow yum I would highly recommend this place.. even for us pasties not too hot.. very reasonable ! Can't wait to visit Thunder Bay again to chow down on the goodness...

Wow great food and fantastic service. We are not knowledgeable about East Indian food so the buffet is an opportunity to sample different foods and flavors. Many East Indian people eating here too which I usually take as an indication of quality. Dont be afraid of spicy dishes as they have a good selection of mild spiced dishes as well as some spicy vindaloo too. Wonderful charm and character in the building rounds out this wonderful evening dining with dear friends.

To be honest, I personally believe that its the best restaurant in Thunder Bay because its got this delicious Indian food and the ambience has its own indian style. Butter chicken is a must try for everyone who goes there. Lovely appetizers like samosas and pakoras with the famous sweet chilli sauce. Its definitely a must go place.

We enjoyed a delicious meal after hiking the sleeping giant for several hours. Our main selection criteria: it was open on a Sunday evening. We planned on a takeout but once inside we decided to sit down. We tried the staple butter chicken (I thought the sauce was too sweet and "tomato-ey" but my partner enjoyed it) and the Goan Prawn (deliciously spiced and a bit on the hotter side just as I had hoped). We ended up taking leftovers in a doggy bag as well as desert - which we enjoyed the following day. Service was knowledgeable and attentive. Would return to try out their buffet option.

This was delicious! We're just passing through on our way from Vancouver to Montreal, and we were a little afraid it would be bland, dumbed down curries. Nope! Totally authentic and delicious. Not cheap, but not extrodinarily expensive either at about $12-15 a plate for dinner. Really friendly staff too. 10/10, we'd stop there again.

Well I must say I have pretty high expectations for most restaurants having worked not only in the kitchens management and as a server in my life I expect a lot from where I eat. I will say I was looking for Thai food and this was my second choice on the basis of location. I usually done for want to go to a restaurant that does two Central themes like Indian and Thai. But there weren't many people there and I was wanting to eat on the Run. The decor is fantastic the service seemed very friendly but sadly that's where it ended. I ordered a vegetarian Thai red curry even though they didn't have a lot of people it took them 40 minutes to get it to me which is unacceptable for such a small dish. When it arrived it was missing the Hallmarks Thai food in general basil tea for lemongrass no baby corns and the worst thing of all was it the sauce I believe is a tomato base. I don't even know if it had coconut milk in it. All in all it was a okay meal but I was also starving. I would never go back. If I was dragged here by somebody else I would definitely try the Indian I'm sure it's much better.

The food here is the BEST Indian food I have had anywhere that I've had the opportunity to partake. It is, by far, the best in Thunder Bay. The servers are quite attentive too but don't seem to hassle you with constant offers to refill your drinks or such. If you are looking for a great dinner experience you can't go wrong here!

Entered the restaurant, a nice spice aromatic ambiance with rich Indian kitchen colours welcomed me – Excellent, what else you need in a restaurant where the entrance enhance your craving for something tastier. Yes the décor with silk and embroidered clothes in rich Indian colors of saffrons/reds/browns/yellow are just done marvelous. 5***** There was no body at the guest waiting counter, nor a bell to ring to tell that a customer is waiting for to be seated. I went inside to see if someone can help me – NO. I came back and waited for next 5 minutes and just as I thought about going back some one appeared and asked me if I’m waiting for to be seated. I said ‘YES’. The girl took me to a corner of the restaurant having a table with two chairs. She asked me to be seated till she brings the menu. There were only two group of people eating at that time whole restaurant was empty, it was around 8:30 pm, she would might have provided me with a much better table near the windows but a table at the end of the restaurant were chosen by her. Not a good choice seeing the time and empty restaurant. 0* I ordered two dishes seeing the content of the vegetables in those dishes and the name given to them. It came with a bowl of rice and butter naan as I ordered. Way too much for a single guest, but I was not apprised about the quantity of the dishes etc. Anyways. From the name both dishes sounds like Indian dishes, but here the mistake goes. And as per the hostess it was my mistake that why I didn’t ask her if both dishes are Indiana or Thai. I advised her that since in the menu you put the name of the dish similar to an Indian dish then why I will ask you such a question. Whatever. One dish has an authentic Indian flavour. Not much spicy , just the right kind of taste. But people eating bland food my find it spicy so you may request for lesser spices although that will take away the whole aroma of the dishes. Anyways. Another problem I cited was no spoon was given. It was expected that guest will eat fine quality Indian basmati rice with fork, the way oriental rice is eaten. Another big mistake. Fine Indian basmati rice is eaten with spoon not fork for the simple reason that when cooked each grain will remain separate from each other. So food get 4****. Service get 0*. When I was leaving I tried to strike a conversation with the hostess to praise e about the décor etc. but she was not at all interested to speak anything. So before I say anything further she finished the conversation, which was not started at first place, by saying the second dish which you said was not tasty is prepared as it should be and that is the dish most of our customers like the best. So in a way I was thrown out from the restaurant.  Service again received 0* This is the only Indian restaurant in the region so I have no other option to visit again but I will wear a wig and remove my glasses. I am Indian and I want Indian food once in a while. Whatever…….

Went with the buffet option. Being vegetarian there were only 3 options in the buffet and pretty standard dishes as well, none of the more fancy ones. In addition to the 3 vegetarian ones, 2 meat dishes. There was no dessert available with the buffet price. The gravy also tasted a little diluted...not as thick/creamy as I would anticipate.

Absolutely unequivocally the best Indian cuisine I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. There's a wonderful restaurant in Hamilton that I previously thought was the best, Masala Grille is easily 5 times better. I had the buffet. However their menu is varied and extensive offering selections of meat dishes as well as vegetarian and vegan options. The buffet included two meat dishes, daal, paneer with spinach, a spicy cauliflower dish, beautiful saffron basmati rice, homemade naan and onion pakoras. Absolutely fabulous. Flavours were fresh and homemade from scratch. No bottled or canned sauces here. I will be dreaming of this food for months to follow. If you visit Thunder Bay you must go to Masala Grille. ☺

I've been here several times. They've changed their menu recently the buffet is still there. There are a lot of good dishes on the menu. My wife is allergic to gluten and the server was very knowledgeable about the condition; she made sure the food was safe and we all got a meal we could enjoy.

Masala Grille is the go-to East Indian restaurant in town. Though your experience may be inconsistent from one visit to the next, when they do it right, they really do it right. The buffet is the main attraction but is probably the restaurants weakest feature. I've had astounding buffet, and poor buffet. Sometimes the food tastes burnt or over spiced. But, the individual meals are wonderful; Perfectly seasoned with wonderful textures. I recommend Masala, and I highly recommend giving it a second chance if it failed to impress before.

This was a tough one to review. Getting straight down to it.. I ordered 2 things, palak paneer and naan. Sorry guys the palak paneer I got is not palak paneer. What I got is a south Indian spinach dish, which if it was marketed so, I'd have loved it. But what I ordered and what I got were completely two different things. I am going to ignore the fact that my spinach dish did not have any seasoning in it. Purely because it allowed me to enjoy the spinach without any flavour influence and it was awesome. Love how fresh your spinach was. And for that matter Paneer was surprisingly fresh as well. The naan was good except it had salt. Yes I know south Indian chapati demands salt....a north Indian naan doesn't get salt. Just some subtle tweaks to pay respect to the dish that is being served would commend a much higher rating. In a nutshell the use of fresh ingredients earns my respect. But not being true to the dishes and the region it comes from ..takes away the points.

Atmosphere, and decor has a unique effect on you when you walk in. Very warm and inviting. The music is zany and completely incomprehensible. Love it. Staff has always been great (although they seem to cycle through them often), friendly and really good at filling in the blanks where menu items are concerned. Food is always amazing. Buffet is a great choice. There is always a chicken and beef selection to load up on. I have yet to be disappointed with the chef's selection. They made the Vindaloo once as a buffet item, but never seen it again. It's top notch. Order it a la carte, if you're stuck on deciding. The 'Tandoori Nights' special is great for 2, as a sampler/snackitizer special too. Lots of variety. Order the Samosas and the above sampler and you'll be stuffed. They have a lamb dish that's fantastic. Don't be squeamish, its done right. Anyway, if it's date night. It'll run you about $100 (with drinks/wine). and you'll be pleasantly plump afterwards. Go there with an appetite.

The waiters and food were marvelous. We had the option of ordering off of the menu or the Buffet which was located near the kitchen. I went with the buffet. Masala Grill is awesome! The atmosphere is very nice and so is the staff who work here! I had the buffet it had quite a few veggies options which were delicious and they were at a great price. I also really like that the food wasn't greasy like many other Indian places I've eaten at! I will definitely be back

Ordered many dishes, all were delicious! I loved the Okra curry (Bindi) dish and my friend enjoyed the samosas and pakoras. Service from our waiter was top-notch. Forgot his name but it started with an "A" and he mentioned he was from Gudjarat. Highly recommend. Must try.

Food is delicious and the naans are huge. First I thought maybe I paid a little too much for the quantity of food I ordered but quality is amazing and this is coming from someone who has tried a lot of Indian restaurant all over Canada from west coast to Halifax.

This is a favoriate for myself and my coworkers. The buffet is always fresh and fantastic. Perfect for limited time frames or more relaxed meals. Afforadable, delicious and the service is amazing. I was there today and one of the staff at the buffet commented that one of the dishes was empty but more was coming out shortly. I thanked her and said I would check back in a little bit. But before I could go back up, she came to my table and offered to bring me some of the fresh item. I have never been to a buffet where the service was that fantastic. Highly recommended!!

Great place for Indian food. We had Pankooros as an app, I had Butter Chicken, she had the Chicken Vindaloo, two orders of garlic Naan, and everything was simply delicious! I felt that there was room for improvement pairing the wine list to the menu (but I didnt try them all hahaha)

service toooo slow, order 4 naans and took over 1 hour! make sure you take a day off to eat here since the service is so slow just for naan , imagine ordering a main course. good luck

Great little Indian restoraunt. Clean, well decorated interior with good space between tables. The staff are fast and attentive. The dishes could use a little more spice and heat, though I assume it's an attempt to water down a little and appeal to the Thunder Bay population.

I took out dinner today. I said them I am in rush so just pack buffet stuff. After 30 min when I asked them they said butter chicken was over so they re cooked it. Thanks for that but they should have immediately told me. I went to hotel where I am staying tonight. After opening I realized that They didn’t put any spoon, ????. I called them and lady named Rama said me that they don’t give spoons as people take out food to home. I said so u think everyone goes and eat at home. She said ok… no sorry yet. So I said her u should say sorry rather than saying ok! Very disappointing! By the way food was not bad.

Tonight I had ordered the lamb Rogan Josh. When I picked up my ordered the server was very polite and professional. When I got home I realized I had received the wrong order and called back. The server was very apologetic and delivered my order within minutes after the call. Absolute best service, amazing staff.

Ok, I'm going to be a bit tough here. Read the reviews, went based on that, had the buffet, wasn't overly impressed. That being said, I spend a ton of time in Richmond Hill and Markham, so I've had some of the best. The folks were great, great ambiance, wish I would have ordered off the menu. I ordered Dal spicy to see and it was fantastic. I would have dropped a 2 star on this if it were based primarily on the buffet, the nice folks and Dal pushed it to 3.5, since you can't give .5, I will give a 4 and I will go back and do the menu. Cheers!

My Volleyball team and I went to the Masala Grille for our last team dinner in Thunder Bay. The service was very friendly, and the food was great. The restaurant is a converted house, and as such, it has a really comfortable vibe and a great decor. I would definitely recommend checking it out!

New in town, have high expectations... Two stars because the food is decent and the Server I dealt with was pleasant. Decent food does not warrant most expensive Indian restaurant in town... Gave me sweet chili sauce and spiced yogurt along with my chicken biryani and samosas. I want samosa sauce with my samosas, not sweet chili, wish I had known before I arrived home. Next is the spiced rice they call biryani. No veggies whatsoever, not even onion, this is not biryani! Samosas were ok... without the sauce. Spiced yogurt was the worst I have tried, thicker than most but still bad. Better places in town for much less $$$
