Would recommend for lunch, drinks. Tasty light fare with lots of original flavors served by an effective staff in a chill retro atmosphere. N&C is licensed and provides lots of mixed drink ideas as well as standard brew choices, NABs etc.
Generally, I don't notice deco or vibe when eating out because in most restaurants it's unremarkable. However, nook and cannery is worth mentioning, because it has a carefully crafted, idealized mid '70s Greenwich Village cafe feel as you might imagine it-including coffee cups from Nan's kitchen and Joni on the stereo. Despite being newly decorated it feels comfortable and "lived in", as if it's been up and running like a top for decades.
The kitchen is open, with a bar looking on the grill area. There is plenty of room for a sit down at numerous tables. The light was perfect for lunch time, coming through the windows on the south wall, which adds to the vibe.
I had a beet / tofu sandwich (perfectly toasted bread) with tomato jam called the smoky beet LT extreme, with a side of fancy fries that come with sauce, kimchi, cilantro and chopped green onions. My dining partner had a vegan burger called the DiDi, with a side salad.
The food was exceptional, and I don't say that lightly. One of the best lunches I've had in ages. The salad was one of the best we can remember. The flavors are distinct and combine well. I imagine the rest of the menu is similar. We had a raspberry lemon scone to go which was also top notch.
The current prices make it a steal. Can't wait to eat there again.
