Loved going here, unique unapologetic food that is so different from what you get elsewhere, if you are going expecting a more refined place like some of the owners other restaurants you will be in for a surprise as it's more laid back and social than the other places but if that's your speed the food is amazing the people are friendly and they have some really good tequila

A perfect place for after work drinks! We split a frozen jug of sour gummy margaritas, nachos, queso, and guacamole and chips. Everything was delicious. The patio is the perfect place to spend a few hours, and there are heat lamps to keep you toasty when it cools down. Will certainly be returning.

Small portions for price ($8-$9 per taco, $12/drink). Fresh, good quality food. Average service. While I was there they had a hammock on the street and a passerby fell out of the hammock and injured her head on the concrete. There was a slow response by staff to call for an ambulance or provide assistance which indicates further staff training for this situation may be beneficial. A patron ended up checking on the injured woman, flagging down the gossiping staff, calling an ambulance, flagging down police and waiting with the injured woman.

Appealing street front look. Quality, temperature, and speed of food was 5*. Wait staff were not professional, or friendly. Listened to several gather outside (while on patio) discussing interpersonal matters, while several reminders needed to be given for a requests we made. Not attentive, and not inviting. Although food was great, there are many options next time.

I’ve never been to a real Mexican restaurant but this definitely is an amazing introduction to Mexican food for me! My duck carnita taco and enchiladas were extremely flavorful and to die for. The menu is pretty small but the selection was perfect for me, would recommend to anyone looking for great Mexican food.

Fun new spot. The decor is great and unique. Music was loud and the place had a lively feel. Price is decent and we ordered tacos (pork belly and fish) which were absolutely great. As well we ordered scallops which were served raw and had no indication from the menu, though I didn't mind and they tasted great, my girlfriend was not up to eating them. I feel as though if you didn't know the Spanish name of the dish you might be surprised.

Popped in for a few margaritas during a walk downtown. They were delicious! Also had an order of the Cod Tacos which were absolutely incredible. All of the food that went past us looked amazing, I wanted try everything! Only disappointing part of our visit was the service, it was slow and took a while to get out orders. The patio was busy however inside was fairly empty. I don't know if it was a staffing issue, regardless will try this spot again!

Fantastic! We chose to sit on the outdoor patio, which had tremendous space. We were seated quickly and the staff was friendly and courteous. But the important part was the food. We started with nachos with chicken and a side of guacamole. Easily the best nachos I've ever had. The toppings were on point, and the chips were perfect. We shared two entrees of chicken fajitas and three tacos (two cod and one el pastore). Bright vegetable flavors, perfectly seasoned meats and stellar sauces (crema and habanero mango) all came together to make am amazing meal. The drinks and additions (guac and chicken) were a bit pricey, but over all it was a great meal and experience.

I've been here twice now - I had the pork belly chicharrones the first time and a carne asada burrito the second time. Both were really good, but the giant heap of guacamole that came with the chicharrones really tipped the scales for me. Cocktails are nice; if you're into margaritas, try the pomelo margarita. Really good!

I made a reservation that they couldn’t find at first and sat 5 of us at a 4 seat table, once they found our reservation they moved us to a booth which was much more comfortable. During the entire meal there was a group of people standing behind our booth (not near the bar whatsoever) drinking and being extremely loud, at one point one of them even removed their shirt but nothing was said to this group the whole time. We waited over a half an hour after being seated to place our orders. We received one round of drinks and were not asked once if we needed refills although our glasses were empty! After about 45 mins our food came out which was excellent, we all enjoyed the meals we ordered but not once were we asked if we needed anything or how our food was. We finished our meals and waited another half hour for someone to come to our table but they never so we had to call someone over to request our bills. It was at that point the waitress advised they were short staffed as a manager didn’t show for their shift. This was my first time at Cojones and because of the service we received I don’t think I will return.

I may have to go back for a second time, but I don't understand the hype for this place. We ordered the Nachos and a few Tacos, and the food was alright. The pickled onions were an interesting choice, and not one that I would have made myself. The hostess was super friendly, but the wait staff were quite slow. We had a few drinks and between ordering our food and receiving it there was nearly an hour gap. Simple things like cutlery and water had to be asked for 3 or 4 times before it came to us. I may have just had a singular bad experience, and I am willing to give it another go, but I wasn't a big fan. Gave it three stars for the sweet atmosphere and fire Spanish music.

We visited from Toronto and were surprised to find a very impressive tacoria. Their tacos and margs are fantastic. The bite sized moose taquitos were so good, it tasted almost like beef and was not dry. The duck taco was huge and covered with delicious crispy bits. We also had beef short rib taco which was more like a carnitas, flattened and fried on both sides. It came with a sweet dipping sauce. Our favourite margaritas were the jalepeno and the spicy mango. Patio seating was busy but the service was quick.

Fantastic place! Such a relaxing but colourful atmosphere! The menu was amazing and had such a diversity. I had moose taquitos (never thought I would see those words together) and a cod taco. They were both absolutely delicious! I had a spicy mango margarita as well and it was sooooo good. Dessert was churros with a tequila-infused caramel and it was finger-licking good. I'm not going to lie, I think this was possibly my first dining experience in which I had nothing negative to say. Hands down, one of the most underrated places to eat in St. John's.

First, the drinks are 10/10. The margarita jalapina and spicy mango margarita are delicious with just the right amount of spice. Food is meh, I would give it a 5/10. The nachos had burnt tips with scarce toppings. There were more chips without toppings than with. The rajas con crema taco was one of the messiest, grossest tacos I've ever attempted to eat. The greasy crema flowed out of it on the table and plate. My hands were covered in sauce. It was disgusting. We also shared the churrios which actually came before our tacos...and were cold and dry. The service was 2/10. We had multiple servers and for most of our seating we weren't sure who our actual server was. We felt like a burden when we ordered our tacos after the nachos...we picked up on some real "when are you leaving" vibes. The only reason I will return will be for drinks. Maybe chips and salsa cause it's hard for that to be gross.

I was originally attracted to this place for the birria tacos as they’re a very trendy food right now, and not very common from what I can tell. When we got there, there were many servers just stood up outside in the pedestrian mall sort of outside dining, they were quick to seat us at our table however, and then went on to serve other people and we didn’t see our waiter for some time after that. We ordered fountain drinks and our food, which included two orders of the birria tacos and then a chicken taquito dish. They served us two orders of the complimentary chips and salsa while waiting for our meal, and if it wasn’t for that we would have starved waiting for our food. We ordered a virgin margarita as well as a corona while waiting, and both drinks took about 15-20 minutes, and came out well after our food. The birria tacos that cost 8-9$ each had ONE taco. The chicken taquito’s that cost 12-15$ had 4 small taquitos if you could even call them that. After we had finished, we waited some time for the server to come back to check on us as we wanted to order some dessert, once they had come back we ordered some churros. Once they arrived, which took quite some time as well, they were absolutely delicious! 100% the highlight of the night. Overall, during our dinner there the food portions were small for the price, the food and drinks took what seemed like forever to come out, and although friendly, the staff didn’t check on us, or anything really that you would expect of a restaurant’s staff.

Horrible. Went last night with a friend for supper. We both ordered the street corn and trio of tacos. The street corn was an $8 piece of boiled corn dipped in mayo and cheese after the fact...very slimy and gross. The trio of tacos were stale tasting and bland. The chicken one was the only edible. Place is very pricy for low quality food. I paid $17 for one taco and piece of corn. It's too bad because we were looking forward to trying this place.

Went for supper tonight. More authentic Mexican food but I prefer tex-mex style. Small portions with no sides. Five of us were in and out in under 30 minutes for supper, hence food is prepared and standing so not overly fresh. Very noisy. Likely first / last visit.

There is definitely some room for improvement when it comes to the taco tortillas, but I wouldn't hold it against them (like some other reviewers have) considering how recently they opened. Having worked as a server and in retail downtown, I can comfortably say you can't please everybody. This is ESPECIALLY true downtown, where I have encountered the rudest and most entitled people in existence. Take it from me and take it to heart, you're doing great! Shout out to Kyle for being a fantastic server!

First impression was good, the decor and atmosphere was great. Alex was our server tonight, he was amazing. Very knowledgeable and incredibly friendly. The food was fantastic and margarita pitchers were very delicious. Only thing I would have changed is to improve the street corn a little, they were good but could easily be improved. Overall we really enjoyed our dinner here tonight and commented how we could have stayed and drank Margarita's all night. Can't wait to come back next time we're in town.

Your going to pay a lot for food that's Meh... The table setting aren't consistent. That might not matter to most people but a person I was with had 3 drinks, the same drink, but served in 3 different glasses with 3 different amounts of the beverage. They ran out of food for some orders, before a long weekend, I understand it's COVID and the servers are super nice, but they had a lack of quality control going on.

Portions were incredibly small considering the price. In Cod We Trust Taco tasted good but not amazing. Ghost Pepper sauce was incredibly mild, barely any spice in my mouth. After finishing our meal we got up and walked to the Celtic Hearth, paid less, had better tasting food, and brought home leftovers.

Beef tacos, called like Dorado I guess, looked and tasted like they had been fried in a very old and black oil, I even couldn't finish although I really love taco (0 to 1 out of 5). There was almost no avocado in the guacamole which tasted like salad (2 out of 5). Margaritas, I am not sure as there was no info like they're alcohol free but I assume they make margarita like what we know about the margarita in general, were like lime juice mixed with tapped water (0 to 1 out of 5). The only thing that was close to ok is the spicy tomato sauce served with the nachos.

Nachos are delicious and I would highly recommend. The Tacos are mediocre. For a restaurant claiming to offer a Mexican culinary experience and asking anywhere from $7‐$9.00 for 1 taco, the tacos came out looking like a 1 dollar Taco Bell special. Ingredients are standard for what you'd expect in a Mexican restaurant, presentation was pathetic and they were plopped on their side as if thrown from across the kitchen. The burrito is their downfall. Hands down the worst burrito you can get anywhere in this town, soggy disgusting slop. The burrito came out presented very well, but came on a bed of watery salsa. Because it was sitting on salsa it was fully soaked underneath and was as wet as a mop. The filling was soggy and had the texture of baby food. Avoid this dish. What doesn't makes sense is how a restaurant claiming to be Mexican has only 1 burrito option on their menu? Quality does not match the price tag and I would rate this place as a 3.5 star restaurant.

Stopped by this place for a late lunch on Sunday and was pleasantly surprised by their selection of Gluten-Free options on the menu. They also had Vegan options once I asked the server. Food was delicious! Drinks were fantastic with several types of marguerita! I should point out that it is a little pricey, two of us each had a drink ($13 x2) and the three tacos ($18 x2) and our bill was nearly $80! So be warned, it was more expensive than we were hoping for a Sunday lunch, not a place we’ll go every week, but probably once in a blue moon.

Very small portions for the price. My chicken wings were supposed to have a molasses and valentina sauce with toasted sesame seeds.. I found 2 seeds! AND, no molasses whatsoever! The sauce was straight out of the bottle from Sobeys. For $15 I got 8 wings (no sides or garnish with the dish) the Guacamole and tortilla chips were ok, for $14, I was expecting a large plate, got a small basket. My soda pop was $2.50 and was 10 Oz, no ice.. Seriously, this place is a good candidate for a Kitchen Nightmares makeover.

Terrible food. Everything has the same mush texture. Had a hamburger with bun so soggy couldn't pick it up. The hamburger meat wasn't house made. The food seemed old and microwaved. Was well overpriced especially for the poor quality. The table and chairs were dirty. The bathrooms were filthy. We were the only to people eating there at supper time, I don't know why the place was so dirty.

Food and drinks were delicious. You have to order the moose taquitos for an appetizer! Amazing! We had short rib burritos and it was so yummy! My husband had a Moscow mule and he said it was the best one he'd ever had. Food was a little slow coming out but worth the wait. Service was good and friendly.

First time back in St.John'sin almost 7 years. This restaurant is very new and a great addition to the downtown core. The staff were friendly and attentive. The food and tequila was spectacular. Highly recommend this spot for a bite to eat

The food tastes good, but the portions are quite small for what you’re paying. Our server was not attentive at all and we had to ask for water 3 times and ask twice for the bill. Also, the restaurant itself is incredibly loud, the music was on bust the entire time so it’s not the place to have good conversation.

Probably best to wait this one out. Restaurant was a bit of a mess. Even the staff said they opened too early. They have specials on the board & in tiny writing says not available yet. Staff said most likely mid September. No table service for a late night even though the place wasn't too busy. Had to pick up own flight back to the table which is clearly a tea light candle holder. Very easy to tip over expensive shots in. Also didn't like how they don't offer lime/lemon/salt with drinks. Not good practice and they clearly advertise against it in a demeaning way.

The service was 5 star! Even the taste of the food was 5 stars...the only thing that made me give it 4 stars was the temperature. My dinner was luke warm. The rest of my party were satisfied with the temperature of their entrees, however.

Had a Saturday lunch there recently. Dirty table, seat and bathrooms. $70 for lunch for 2 and the hamburger bun was soaking wet and cold to touch. Maybe a fresh 25 cent bun would be a good idea? Wow.

I just ordered 3 tacos from the lunch menu. I asked the bartender to pick 3 of the most popular ones for me. Considering they were $18, I figured they would be a decent size. I received 3 small tacos (as seen below - all 3 can fit on one dinner plate) literally 1 minute after they were ordered. They must be somewhat prepared in the back. The Baja Fish one was fine, and dry (on the left). As for the other 2, I couldn’t even hold them in my hands they were so soggy. I had to eat them with a fork and knife. They tasted good but I just couldn’t get past the consistency of the tortillas. I’d recommend upping the portion size and changing the tortilla recipe. Otherwise, I’d never return. Go to Adelaide instead. Wayyyy better bang for your buck

One appetizer, one taco, one cup of black coffee = $30. The corn tortilla for the taco was cold. The food made me sick. I think it was the duck. I've been there three times... always hoping that maybe next time It'll be good. Maybe I'll wait a few months before going back.

The place was quiet and I waited 40 minutes for a server, I had a reservation....got the duck taco that came out fridge temp, they replaced it and the next one came out warm but so dry I couldn't swallow it, aparently it was supposed to have sauce so clearly they forgot to put it on there! Asked for apps but my mains came out with no apps, had a drink order that came after the meal and they forgot one, the forgotten drink took another 20 minutes to come.......got the bills after another 20 min wait after we asked for them and they have to fix them 3 times!!! First and last time I eat here for sure!!!

This doesn't make sense especially when the restaurant was at half capacity. Seems like they doubled the tables but didnt invest in enough staff?

Dinner was delicious, service was great. The only complaint would be the hostess, who, given the times, kept pulling her mask down, touching the mask, rubbing her nose then setting tables. She pulled her mask down to talk too closely to people and Couldn’t keep her hands off her face. Perhaps better training and staff management is needed.

Had a great meal here, everything was delicious and my partner and I both left full after splitting two entrees and a dessert. The drinks are on the pricy side but the Mezcal Mule was delightful. The server was attentive and friendly, and the restaurant has some beautiful art.

1/5 stars. I’m not one to complain publically but I just had the worst meal of my life ???????????????????????????? Icy cold, soggy, flavourless food. The chicken had no marinate or spice on it, watered down margaritas, false advertising (advertised avocado and stuffed it with lettuce instead then said they forgot to change the menu to state that), nobody refilling our waters or asking if we wanted another drink after sitting with empty cups for over an hour, asked to talk to manager who never came over. Save your money, people!

Just got back from my wife’s birthday dinner with her best friend and husband. If I could give this restaurant a worse rating I would but the app won’t let me. It started off when we called to make reservations this afternoon. We called and the girl said we don’t take reservations for parties of four we only do parties of eight. I asked if she could make an exception, she said in a rude matter, no we don’t make exceptions. I said ok, I’ll guess we’ll have to go somewhere else. She said very rudely, go ahead. Then the manager was kind enough to call me after I submitted this feedback. He explained that it was a call service that they had been using and he’d like to take care of us personally, so he took our reservation for 7pm. We arrived and the place was very nice, and the atmosphere was good. So we ordered drinks & asked if there were complimentary chips & salsa like every other Mexican place I’d ever been & were told no. So we ordered some from the menu. The drinks were good, my wife loved the margaritas. Our meals started to arrived one at a time, serval minutes apart. My meal never came. Everyone else shared theirs with me. The waitress apologized and said the meal would be ready soon & would be on the house. I told her not to bring it because everyone was practically finished at this point. Then at 7:50 the manager called while I was sitting at the table he reserved for us & said he didn’t think we were coming tonight but we seen our names on their reservations. He then came over and spoke to us an offered use a complimentary drink for all of us, but at no time did he ask how our meal were. I was mad as hell because it was a night out with friends but I never said much because I didn’t want to embarrass my wife on her birthday. Overall drinks are good, food okay, waitress was ok. Extremely poor service from management because he came across untruthful because he called me in the restaurant and told me that I didn’t think we were coming tonight when he reserved my table that day. Also kitchen staff poor for forgetting one persons meal.

First visit to this Mexican spot in downtown St John’s. Went on a quiet (early) Friday evening. Staff were friendly, available and hospitable. Nice decor and good vibe all around. They provided comp chips and salsa. ????????. We enjoyed everything very much. Will be back to try more items.
