REVIEWS OF Shift Restaurant IN Saskatchewan

Iryna Petryshyn

We were excited to try Shift, but were disappointed. The food was actually quite good, for the most part. The perogies were great and the lamb was amazing. The pickerel had a nice flavour as well, but there were bones in it and the chickpeas seemed a bit undercooked. There were some strange quirky things that did not significantly impact our meal but did suggest that the restaurant has some kinks to iron out, such as serving cocktails with straws that were shorter than the glasses, with no longer straws available. The reason was given that the restaurant was moving to strawless, which I respect; if so, cocktails should be served in glasses that are easy to drink out of, and the useless straws should not be included in every drink, as this seems to defeat the purpose of going strawless. But I digress. Where we really found the restaurant to be lacking was the service. My pregnant friend ordered a virgin cocktail. After a few sips, she questioned whether there was vodka in it, and asked the waitress to be sure. The waitress stated that she was *sure* that there was no vodka in it, more than once, in a tone that was quite condescending. She left and returned a few minutes later, apologetic because she confirmed with the bartender that there was alcohol in the drink. Note that she did not immediately check with the bartender, nor did she appease my friend's concerns by offering to do so. She insisted that the drink was virgin without knowing that it was, so her apology after the fact was really quite useless. The service for food and drinks was slow, despite the fact that there were only about 5 tables occupied. When making a reservation, the staff made it seem like they were squeezing us in, again despite the fact that there were only a few tables occupied. It was not the worst service, but certainly not on par with comparable restaurants in Saskatoon.

I was very disappointed with this restaurant today. My Wife and I took a good Friend of ours to have lunch there because we had a good experience there last week when we went there and wanted our friend to experience it. we all ordered the Burger (which we found was very good) but the Fries that were placed on our 3 plates were absolutely terrible. They had been deep fried so long that they were not crunchy but they were saturated in oil and completely Rock Hard. I was afraid I was going to break a tooth. The wait staff was good and got us new fries soon after. (but not soon enough to call it a good experience) I also ordered a bowl of soup which was not brought to the table prior to the main which made things cumbersome once all the plates came. Food service was timely but it took an unusually long time to get beverage service. (maybe understaffed today ?). At the end of our meal, the staff offered us up 2 desserts to us as a courtesy poor meal. This unfortunately was more insult to us as all 3 meals were messed up but only 2 people were offered a dessert. That was very unprofessional in our opinion. For the Amount of money that is charged for the meals here vs the quality of food and service we received today, we felt like we were treated at a less classy place. Sorry Shift Restaurant, you did not stand up to your reputation today. I dont think we will be returning to your establishment again.

Excellent food and service. A great experience. Beautiful river view. All around great time.

Had a nice supper there with family. Great wine selection.

We had our Christmas party on the 3rd floor of Remai Modern gallery that was catered by Oliver & Bonacini. They made our Christmas party so special! We all had a great time and enjoyed every second of it. All the employees were very professional, friendly and accommodating. Food was very elegant and tasty. We all enjoyed décor, service and personalized experience they created for us! Me and our whole team will gladly recommend Remai Modern and Oliver & Bonacini Events and catering to our family and friends. Thank you again!

Food was mediocre, the cornish hen is a 30$ dish lacking flavour with disappointing sides. (Broccolini tasted of burnt oil and the potato cake felt like it just came out of the fridge) server looked annoyed we were there and had to ask for water multiple times. It's a nice view and the setting is pretty but was really underwhelmed and unhappy, wouldn't recommend for a good meal. Wouldn't have minded the service, they may have been understaffed the day we were there, but the food was not good for what we paid. Hopefully they improve.

The food was fine. The server was friendly. The overall service was disappointingly slow. My girlfriend and I waited almost an hour for our food to arrive despite being one of the first tables seated. I saw food arrive at other tables that arrived after us and it made me wonder if we were forgotten about. I've been here previously, but this time was unfortunately a disappointment.

Second time dining out at Shift in 3 months. Main dishes continue to be too salty. Loud environment but good view on the river. Staff need more training (i.e. the concept of fixed price with add-on dishes did not dawn on them, waiters serve many tables and thus should always ask who ordered what before dropping a plate in front on the wrong guest). Fixed price menu offers good appetizer and main portion size, but skimpy on dessert. Would not return.

Went for a special occasion, made an early reservation (4pm) on a Saturday for 7 people. When we arrived to the completely empty restaurant we were told they were not seating anyone becuause the restaurant was very busy that night. Did not check the book or ask if we had a reservation. After clearing that up the food was good and the service very good. Second time I try to go for a special occasion I make a reservation and was told over the phone when the hostess called to confirm that they had a two hour time limit on tables and would be flipping the tables every two hours. My reservation was 8pm. Not wanting to be kicked out of the restaurant drink in hand on my special night I cancelled my evening and went somewhere that values their patrons. Nice atmosphere but the worst hostess staff I have ever encountered.

Absolutely gorgeous atmosphere (and that view!) and an impressive quality of food. Oliver & Bonacini venues are reknowned and Shift is no exception! Try the lunch or dinner prix fix, it's super reasonable and you get a bit of everything! The mac and cheese is heavenly, the mushroom soup is my fave in the city, and the sprouts and seeds bowl is so filling! Eat here, you won't regret it.

Best location and most beautiful restaurant in Saskatoon. Amazing food and service.

Dinner here on Tuesday evening was superb. Waiter was polite, present when we needed him to be and nearby the rest of the time. A gentleman who clearly knew his way around the table, the bar and the kitchen. For appetizer, Beefsteak Tartar, perfect. For main I couldn't decide between the lamb and the porchetta. Waiter recommended the latter and boy was he spot on. It was heavenly. Melt in your mouth, and a very generous portion, covered with seared apple served on potatoes and green beans. I initially thought I would want this in a sandwich but when it arrived I realized nope, it had no problem standing on its own. Makes sense, after all that's what the previous owner used it for. Honestly, Shift is fine dining in one of the more beautiful spots in the city. My dinner companion had the flatiron steak and they did that perfectly as well. The museum is free on Tuesdays so afterwards you can walk off your meal by looking at modern art and deciding if you want it over your couch. If you haven't gone here for a date then I gotta ask you if you're really serious about this relationship. I mean, the porchetta is that good. I am sorry, the picture is after I got into it a little. It was two days ago and I still feel a bit wistful about the whole thing, like 'After eating this, how do I just eat regular food? What the heck do I do now?'. The porchetta was so good it's thrown my life into chaos. Tuesday-Thursday bottles of wine are half price. Dinner was a very reasonable price given where we were. You want to go to Shift. You maybe just don't know it yet.

We had a wonderful time. The service was excellent. Kate, out waitress was friendly, attentive and helpful. The food was delicious. Everyone was very pleased with their meal. I had the special - gnocchi and lamb....it was so good. We would definitely go again!

Brought my Grampa here for lunch and it was the nicest restaurant experience he’s ever had. The server was very kind, and the food was amazing. It was chic and modern, but also quiet. Perfect place for a special meal with Grampa. I also appreciated how clean the place was, and that they had individual bathrooms (accessible and gender-neutral!)

Darcie Hellman

Nice location and view, but I did not enjoy the food. The Caesar salad was very bland, and had no croutons surprisingly which left it lacking. Also apples in grilled cheese is not a great idea, imo. These pairings (or lack of) made for a very uninspiring lunch. The drinks took quite a long time and we learned from the waitress it was because the chef was the only one in the kitchen. I did appreciate they offered $5 brunch special drinks though. Also they should try to add a few more umbrellas in the patio so that people sitting on the outer edge can get some shade if they want.

Situated in the Remai, Shift lives up to its location. Just like the name suggests, this restaurant shifts with the seasons. A focus on the local and innovative. Come in for lunch or dinner followed by a visit to the gallery, or simply a coffee or drink while soaking in the sun though the floor to ceiling windows. Few places in the city can offer such a pleasant view of the river. One of my favorite events that Shift offers is when they invite a special Chef. Who then whips up a one of a kind course dinner that are culturally inspired. Looking forward to see how this restaurant develops and matures. ----- Recently ordered oysters. Most of them were spoiled. They didn't charge us for the ones we didnt eat.

Katie Salmers

Loved the space and locatio ., and my dish was great! Got the pork shoulder with apples and spatzle and it was great. The dessert (crepes) was great as well. Only thing I thought was out of place was the uniform shirts they were wearing, seemed out of place for that space. Would definitely go back. Im honestly surprised by other bad reviews.

It is a very trendy restaurant with lovely culinary ....happy hour was espectacular, and service offered by Nikhil was courteous, fast and professional. Our trout and burger were so delicious and the appetizer was also delicious

Food was good, but definitely expensive. We all got the steak, but the vegetables were the star of the dish. The restaurant was very quiet when we went, only 3-4 tables including ours. The washrooms were absolutely disgusting. Messy and dirty. Tables were also dirty and not properly cleaned. I had dried food on my water glass. For a $50 meal I expected a much cleaner experience. Our server was amazing! But overall not a great experience.

Shawn S

Great food and service. Kitchen was a little slow getting meals out (about 30 minutes after ordering), but the wait was worth it. All our meals were delicious and fairly original.

Went out to try this restaurant and it was a fantastic experience! First of all, it’s located inside the Remai Modern which itself has a great architecture and definitely is eye-catching. The place was clean, modern and inviting. Marina, our server, was pleasant and attentive to our needs. We had the mussels and calamari for starters while fish and chips for the mains. Menu’s priced generously and it tasted delicious! I’ll definitely be back!

Great food, splendid view and the staff was fabulous. Went to Shift for our first anniversary dinner, and Daniel treated us like rockstars. Thanks for making our special night a memorable one.

Had the roast chicken and squash and my guest had the fish on toast. Both were very good. Coffee was also fresh and delicious. Took longer than expected to get seated.

I adore this place. Exceptionally friendly staff and an excellent chef with a delightfully imaginative seasonal menu. The view from the patio is amazing. My partner and I loved this place and made it our go-to for dinning in Saskatoon and were regulars through the summer and early fall of 2018. This restaurant is one of the things we miss most about Saskatoon, and it will be our first stop whenever we have a chance to return. Thank you to John and everyone at Shift for all the great memories!

The service is excellent, the foods are awesome. I will come back.

Excellent food and fantastic atmosphere. A bit pricey but worth it.

Lamb Shoulderwich promised "bannock, za’atar spice, crunch mustard, kohlrabi slaw, mint". I expected the spice and mustard on the lamb because of how it is listed in menu. Instead I received a bannock wrap (great idea but not a sandwich) with dill, yogurt, garlic flavouring. No discernible thyme, oregano, savoury spices and no crunchy mustard. When I asked the waiter he asked and found that the mustard and mint are apparently in the slaw not the lamb wrap. So basically it was a lamb wrap with tzatziki which I would not have ordered. My suggestion...bump up the mustard and put the slaw in the wrap. Also I missed that still water comes in an $8 bottle instead of from a tap and my wife's french fries were undercooked. She enjoyed the Turkey burger and the lamb wrap was delicious but not what I had wanted.

My husband and I had supper here last week. We've been to Shift several times for brunch but never supper before. We found the food and service to be fantastic! I had their Lake Diefenbaker trout which was served on a sizzling hot skillet on top of a creamy, cheesy broccoli base. It's one of the best dishes I've had in Saskatoon, no hyperbole. I shared the chocolate mousse with my husband and it was rich and decadent. We really had a good time and will return soon again.

The Food Dining with another couple we started with three appetizers. We had the Crispy Mediterranean Ribs & Charred Calamari, while our friends shared a generous serving of Beef Tartare. The Mediterranean Ribs were cooked to a crispy, juicy perfection and arrived dusted with chili, fried herbs, & parmesan. We’re often disappointed when ordering ribs as an appy so we were a bit uncertain ordering this, but our host assured us that this was a great choice and he wasn’t wrong. These ribs were delicious. The Charred Calamari was the star of our appy choices. Cooked to perfection with vine-ripened tomatoes, capers and brown butter this gem was served with a side of toasted focaccia perfect for mopping up the delicious sauce. Our Toronto condo is in the heart of Little Portugal (where grilled calamari is a religion) so we know good grilled calamari when we have it — and Shift’s is superb. While we had only a small sample of Beef Tartare we can vouch for its deliciousness. The rich beef is mixed with capers, gherkins and Dijon mustard and served with bannock crisps. Both the Polish and Scottish halves of our food heritage were left smiling - and wanting more. Each couple ordered the same two mains: Brick-pressed Cornish Hen and Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder. We were told that portions were generous, but none of us were prepared for the amount of food that was to come. The Cornish Hens were served with a warm potato & green bean salad, caramelized onions and an absolutely delicious chicken jus. We always admire restaurants that can nail a rich, delicious jus and with the exception of a jus we were served at the superlative St. Lawrence Restaurant in Vancouver this was possibly the best we’ve had in Canada - full stop. If you get a chance and it’s still on the menu this is a “must-have” dish. The Pork Shoulder was cooked in a house made BBQ sauce and served with an exceptional macaroni & cheese casserole & green beans. This was a yummy dish, even if the pork wasn't quite what we expected. Usually pork shoulder is served pulled, and given that it was being served with Mac & cheese we expected that this would be the presentation for this dish. In this case the pork shoulder was cut as a boneless, single piece and while tasty we would have loved to have had a pile of lovingly pulled, fatty shoulder meat to combine with the Mac & Cheese. But this is a first-world problem; the pork was tender and delicious while the Mac & Cheese itself was amazing. The five cheeses in the casserole ensured that the “Cheese” was the star of the dish, not the “Mac” - works for us. Ambiance We were fortunate enough to be seated on Shift's gorgeous outdoor terrace on a delightfully warm summer evening. The terrace overlooks the South Saskatchewan River and the walking/cycling paths that border the west bank. Being able to watch the sky being painted with sunset hues while watching groups of people enjoying an evening stroll was a lovely addition to the evening. Service Because of our dinner companions our very competent and attentive servers were supporting cast to Shift's GM, who went out of his way to make our experience extra-special. But we have no doubt that we would have been very well taken care of by any of the Shift team. Price With a round of opening cocktails, two bottles of wine, taxes and tip this fine dining evening cost $100 per person. We feel that the quality (and quantity) of the food, combined with the ambiance and service, make this a very fair price indeed.

Went there with my husband on a nice sunny day. We were seated on the patio. We asked the server if we can switch our seats to the ones closer to the river and it happened to be a four people table. The server coldly reply “no, you only have two people. You can’t sit there.” Which we understand, they want to put as many people in the restaurant as they can. However, it wasn’t a very busy day and later on we saw the server seated another couple at the four people table. Not a very good customer service.

I come here often because of the uniqueness and interest from the people I dine with, and I must say with all my experience dining here, the staff are awful. 80% of the times I have been, I have had the same waitress (unsure of her name) but she appears to lack any interest in her job and is unbelievably dull while communicating with us (sometimes it’s like I’m talking to a wall and she avoids talking to me directly and will respond to the other people I’m with) Not to mention lazy? I had to remind her to bring our coffees as we hadn’t received them yet even though we had already finished our appetizers? Appetizers before coffee? That’s insane. Should be the first thing you receive after ordering. My first time here the same waitress was unknowingly giving us the wrong trio of icecream and when we questioned it (because of allergies) she had no sense of trying to figure out the solution but another waitress (who was fabulous) overheard and offered her assistance she she solved the issue. Next time (if for some reason I’m forced to go) I will be demanding a different waitress. Not sure how she hasn’t been fired; her attitude and respect while communicating with everyone needs to be fixed. I’ve had a wonderful waiter one time for brunch with my friend which made the experience great. Food is delicious, I cant rave enough about the brunch menu! And the dorito Mac and cheese!

My husband and I went here for our 3 year anniversary and he called ahead to see what the vegan options were for me (so cute right?!) Turns out that theres nothing on the menu, BUT...... they made something just for me. Beautiful cauliflower steak with kale, lentils and the sweetest most delicious roasted heirloom carrots. I'm telling you, even if you're not vegan, ask for this dish. 5 stars, 2 thumbs and 1 big smile.

So surprised at the lukewarm reviews... we went for dinner before a show at persephone and had the most lovely meal. We had the buns and brown bread and chickpea fries for appetizers and the pork, trout, and chicken and dumplings for dinner. Everyone was very happy with their meal and I'm excited to try other things on their exciting menu! A great place to go for a dinner when you want to make a evening of it - would have stayed for coffee and dessert but we had to make the play. Can't wait to try brunch here.

Food was great. Service was not. our waiter needs training.3 times when we asked menu questions he arrogantly replied “like I told you before.” One incident was when we asked if we could order another happy hour drink. He replied, “like I told you before it ends at 6.” It was 6:03 Finally he never asked if we were members and then we didn’t get a discount until I asked later… Disappointing.

We went in for dinner spontaneously. The restaurant was empty and the waters were very cautious. It felt safe. Most importantly the food was fantastic. I had the calamari - fresh! and my hubby had a burger. Such a welcome break from the fear we feel about going anywhere right now.

Our server was top quality. He was polite and hilarious. The food wasn't as good as I expect. If you're going for the food, go to Cactus club, but if isn't busy and my server is there, I might go back.

Not impressed at all. We were a group of eight out for dinner before attending Persephone. We arrived at 5:45 and we ordered by 6:15. Took a long time to get our drinks and our food took an hour to arrive even after we mentioned several times that we needed to be out by 7:45. At one point the waitress said that the food would be right out but it still took at least another 20 minutes so obviously she was telling us what we wanted to hear. My soup was lukewarm and my Caesar salad was good but not worth the $12 as was a small bowl. The waitress was gone for long periods of time although there was lots of other staff around filling water glasses, or bringing soup spoons or whatever but I would say the service was not good.

Had a very good meal. Great atmosphere. Quiet enough for easy conversation. Menu could slightly enhanced. Definitely worth a try!

Great high-end restaurant that focuses on local ingredients with a fine-dining flair. The lunch tones down the fine dining but not the quality so that you can come for a solo lunch or with coworkers and it won't break the bank. Great atmosphere, great food. The wild rice pudding is phenominal!

Good food, but staff not well trained unfortunately....pop is not refill, expensive and small glass...

Near half the menu was tartar and near the other half had jalepenos. Not much of a choice left over from the minimal menu items to choose from. My soup was cold and my salad tasteless.

My mother and I attended for lunch before touring the gallery. We were lucky enough to get a table by the windows which allowed us both to have a beautiful view. I had looked at the menu online before attending the restaurant so I had an idea what they serve. My mother is gluten-free (not celiac) so we had some questions about the food before hand. We shared the squid over sweet potato noodles which was an amazing dish. The squid was cooked to perfection, properly tender with a tasty sauce on the noodles. We shared the Celeriac Caesar salad which was 'ok' and the sprouted seeds bowl which was stunning visually and also tasty. All in all, it was the beginning of a wonderful afternoon! My only recommendation would be to add more gluten-free options. (not fake food, just good plant-based options). Ps Service was excellent.

This restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and I’ve had nothing but delicious food. I highly recommend the fresh scones! The best I’ve ever had. The service is generally good but I have had a few experiences that were not great (slow service, mixed up reservations). Overall I recommend Shift!

Staacey Therrien

We were excited to eat at shift but were underwhelmed. Atmosphere was not great at all, felt cold and quite crowded, not comfortable. The staff was great and the menu was original. However the food was just ok and the cocktails were not great and everything was quite pricey. Definitely not worth the money.

My wife and I went there for our anniversary dinner thinking that it was a nicer(not super upscale) restaurant. When we arrived, the hostess was courteous but she was dressed in a T-shirt and dress pants. We thought that it was a little odd that she was a little casual for a nicer establishment. The restaurant had an upscale, modern decor which was very nice. We were seated on the patio which had a beautiful view. The waiters/waitresses were all in jean and "Shift" T-shirts which didn't seem to go with the ambiance of the restaurant especially for a Saturday night dinner. We order cocktails which were $11 and were quite small with a fair amount of ice....but we shrugged if off. My wife ordered an appetizer the squid which was well executed with a dill pickle flavoured infused noodles. It was a good dish except that it was too large a portion for an appetizer. I ordered the smoked whitefish on toast - The whitefish was underflavoured and could have been smoked and salted more. It tasted bland. It could have been balanced better by the pickled beets that accompanied it but there wasn't enough of it. The pickled beets were excellent. The julienned diakon was bland and there was too much of it. The worst part of this dish was the "toast" ....it was this dry, crumbly thing that was worse than a hospital digestive cookie. Overall, it was a dish that was not well balanced, underseasoned and the individual components did not fit well together. Then we got the entrees....My wife got the tenderloin ($39) and asked for it to be done medium. It came out well done with a bitter char(not a nice one) and the accompanying vegetables had the same flavour. It's a good thing that she doesn't mind a well done steak. If I had gotten that, it would have been sent back. It got the sirloin steak done medium....mine was done to about a medium rare-rare. The steak was small(less than 6oz) with about a third of it as fat. I don't mind a fat rind on my steak but there was very little meat on it. Furthermore, it came with fries(which were reasonable) and large heads of dry, grilled broccoli and cauliflower that were terribly underseasoned. At this point, I was fed up with my meal that I just didn't want to send it back. My wife wanted to get the carmelized white chocolate cheesecake. What she got was a saucer with dollops of what looked like a runny white chocolate mousse, shaved white chocolate chunks and some berries. It looked like a mess. When we asked are waitress if this was supposed to be de-constructed cheesecake and she stated that it was. I, politely, pointed out that if this was the case, it should be explicitly stated on the dessert menu. Her response was, "well, that wouldn't make us unique, wouldn't it?" and she walked away. I wouldn't mind if it was a deconstructed cheesecake but it was poorly executed....it wouldn't even qualify as a mousse. It also seems disingenuous of the restaurant to explicitly state that their dessert was deconstructed. My wife was quite disappointed because she was looking forward to a white chocolate cheesecake. The waitress' response was not very customer friendly either. As you can tell by my above description of the evening, I am a total foodie...I love to eat and I love to cook. We paid almost $200 for our meal for 2 with a cocktail, appetizer, a 5oz glass of wine, entree for each of us and a dessert for my wife. It was poorly executed meal by the chef with sub-par service from the waitress. In my humble opinion, a meal at this restaurant is not worth the price that you pay for. I have been to Shift once before this for a business meeting and the service was good but the food was still poorly executed by the kitchen staff at that time. I always like to give a restaurant 2 tries in case they had a bad day the first time I went. I won't be going back.

Had dessert and cocktails here before a show at persephone. They make a right tasty rusty nail. Dessert was fantastic.

Lorin Elias

Worst food I’ve ever eaten... so disappointed. I am giving one star only because the staff was lovely.

Ian Stanley-Maddocks

Great location, insulting experience. Food was good but service non-existent. Food came haphazardly (appetizers and mains all at once, one in party of four forgotten completely), waters never filled, beer had black fuzz and brown flecks in it, and server was dismissive. At this price point the experience matters and Shift did not deliver.

Carey Chitrena

This place is open til 3 for brunch while a lot of brunch places close at 2. Plus it's in the beautiful Remai gallery which gives it a superb ambiance. Wonderful and friendly service by Savannah and John and the rest of the team. Haven't been for dinner yet, but looking forward to trying it. The brunch is delicious! Everything on the menu sounded so good I had a hard time choosing. :)
