The service is very slow and the food is just so so . The lighting is very dark……The food here is not as good as expected????????????

They told us they've been in business 41 years and you can understand why. In this day of franchise food experiences this truly one of a kind dining experience! Quiet, relaxing decor, amazing food and excellent, old fashioned service. We loved the place and look forward to another visit. This time starting in the piano bar before another amazing dinner.

Gavin Russell

The food was nice and so was the atmosphere. I just felt the prices were a bit high for the quality.

I went to the banquet hall for an event ... The food was a fixed menu... The Newyork strip was good but I ordered a medium rare and it was slightly over done ... Perhaps order rare to get medium rare... The fish and appetizers were great I tried the poached salmon and that was delicious. The bruschettas , shrimp cocktail and smoked salmon were all really good

Norman Campbell

The service was awesome, Dave made us feel like we were at home. I ordered the New York strip steak (medium)... came out just the way I imagined "juice and tender" the sauteed shrimp was amazing as well. Highly recommend... very upscale and eloquent.

Jim Chesla

THE veal marcela is not their best dish. Stick with the surf and turf.

Deanna Seguin

Wonderful experience! Great food, warm friendly stellar service, ambiance was perfection! The food isnt trendy, or over done, its just the clasics done right! Steak, seafood, and fish the way it is meant to be! My fillet mignon was cooked medium rare just as I ordered it, and the flavour was amazing.I will go back again for sure!

Jason Slomczewski

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner here. Amazing food and service. We’ll be back!

Fantastic service and excellent food! If you like Ceasar salad a must try!! A most go if in the area

judy quinn

A bit disappointed. Calamari was rubbery and tough. Dover sole was delicious but I think I was supposed to get a sauce, which didn't happen. Just not as good as other times.

Greg Kazarian

Came in for dinner while in town for a concert. Reminds me of Barberian's in Toronto. The service was great, the staff were very friendly and the food was delicious. They have some of the best Lobster Bisque I've had. Will definitely come back if we're in town again!

What a wonderful restaurant all around. Pictures really don't do justice to the decor; it is elegant yet casual. But were there for the food. I took mom and dad for dinner on Saturday to celebrate Father's Day and we were not disappointed. The lobster and steak were cooked to perfection tender and juicy. We shared the Baked Alaska and it was sinfully delicious. A pleasant surprise was the perfectly brewed coffee. In short you get your money's worth. Oh service just so excellent. Thanks to David who was our server most of the time, but everyone who waited on us was just wonderful. We will come back again.

The atmosphere was so amazing, the customers service is that best, I was so amazed how they welcome us,it was our first time and we didnt know how fancy the restaurant was and we bought our children what a mess.they still treat us amazing even asking if we wanted the bottle warmed up THATS WHAT YOU CALL CUSTOMERS SATISFIED so recommend.I will be going again with the kids at home.

Steak sandwich was ordered Med. rare received rare in most of it. Lobster sandwich was presented like a grilled cheese with white bread. There were only bits of Lobster in the sandwich. Very expensive $97 lunch. Not worth it.

Meredith Montgomery

Visiting the Blue Mermaid is like stepping back in time, and that is a sincere compliment. Suited waiters, white table cloths, custom cruiser plates... cherries jubilee flambéd at your table! I couldn’t believe my eyes. We ordered a shrimp cocktail (because you have to) and steaks. Laughed a lot. After dinner, we went downstairs to the piano bar for a cocktail and to listen to Fast Eddie (his presumed name) on the piano. Dude’s a local institution. Much fun was had at the Blue Mermaid.

This resturant is the definition of "don't judge a book by it's cover" you wouldn't know it from the outside but it is nothing but elegant inside. The decor, service and cuisine are 5 star. One of the best steaks in the city. Highly recommed for special occasion if you want a break from a franchise steak house and support local business.

Sean Daniel Sabbatini

Ordered a filet mignon and was given the end cut with lots of nerves. Sent it back and management was very abrasive over us not liking such an expensive cut of meat. When we mentioned it was the end cut of the filet they had said that we cannot choose the cut to give you. It is clear that whilst charging high prices for their steaks, they do NOT provide good service. Manager on duty was owner's son. Hate to see great businesses get ruined by nepotism.

Friendly staff awesome food and nice atmosphere.

Raf S

A wonderful old fashioned steakhouse, where you can still have a table-side prepared Caesar made from scratch, in-shell escargot in butter and a perfect chateaubriand for two. The smell of old oak. The perfectly pressed linen and polished silverware. The impeccably dressed and trained staff. The table side service and preparation. The extremely well done food. It is just a delight. A very expensive one for that matter, but still a delight.

Peter Walchuk

Quality upscale fine dining. A great comfortable meeting location for the business meeting with clients. Excellent wine, liquor and beer selections. The menu speaks for itself quality and selection.

Wow! Best meal, service and atmosphere I have ever experienced in the Niagara Region. They treat you like royalty no matter who you are. The food was out of this world and I just loved the restaurant itself. Outside isn't much to look at but once inside, just wow. First class. Can't wait for next years birthday!

We dined in the main dining room upstairs, not the lounge. We tried the Centennial platter and filet mignon. The platter had lots of seafood with warmed butter for dipping. The seafood was cooked properly, i.e. fully cooked but still tender and not chewy. The platter consisted of lobster tail, a large shrimp, scallops, oyster, and a king crab leg. The filet was delicious as was the accompanying bearnaise sauce but I will order the steak rare next time as medium-rare was a little too overcooked. Both meals were accompanied with vegetables - simple but tasty, and the asparagus was not stringy at all. This place is not cheap but it's classy and a lovely place for a special occasion.

This place is great for seafood and steak. Staff were friendly

Sandra Cooney

excellent food, old class service!!!

David Lever

First class service and food, If you want to take your wife or girlfriend out for gourmet food this is the place to do it. Great ambience, and lovely bar downstairs to finish your evening with a drink and a chat. Consistenly good restaurant. with great managment and attentive staff.

Roselle David

We decided to go for a nice night out without the children and chose to have dinner here. We both ordered, oysters and escargot for our appetizers and the Surf and Turf for our entrees. The food, drinks, service and overall experience was lovely as always. Looking forward to our next visit.

Not my favourite restaurant. It's high end and at times confusing, as the staff tended to not communicate a lot of the times ie. placing the napkin on your lap without taking to you, holding the bread basket silently beside us expecting us to take from it. I felt one of the waiters was being judgemental to my grandma, as she was clearly out of place in such a fancy place, but I felt it was inappropriate for staff to be treating her differently. Food was very expensive - it tasted okay but was small servings.

christine butt

I enjoyed an evening downstairs with a friend sitting at your bar side. Enjoying the calm atmosphere while a gentleman plays beautiful piano music in the background. The drinks are delicious to start. We ordered Greek salads, garlic bread with steak and bernaise sauce on th side. An evening that made magical memories for me that I'll never forget . Thank you

Deb Strang

Had a wonderful anniversary dining experience here. Regular diners returning know by staff by name and fabulous food. Personal attention to detail and service. Strongly recommend this establishment.

I was excited to show my girlfriend this place, because of the piano music. I remember enjoying Eddie's piano playing the last time I was here. I also remembered the rude service with the waitress ignoring us, but I decided to give it one more shot. We arrived and no one was there to seat us except for the waitress who was too busy to help. There was only one group of people - the place was quite desolate - that's fine, because less people means better attention, right? Wrong. Girlfriend asked waitress about lighter options on the menu and the waitress acted rude and condescending. Came my turn to order and I asked about appetizers without cheese and she pretty much scoffed at me, which was a big difference from the professional manner in which we were treated with at the restaurants we dined at the nights before. Despite the rude behavior from the waitress we acted polite and were mostly ignored. And I'm sorry to say the food was so very average. Her scallops were bland and my veal tasted like a TV dinner. And the bill was $120 with the undeserved tip. If it wasn't for the piano music we would have walked out. I wonder what this restaurant will do once it's loyal 70+ crowd is no longer around. Plenty of better options in the area: Wellington Court, Keg, Old Firehall, Moose and Pepper...etc. Hell, I experience more professionalism at pubs. I don't like giving bad reviews. I can stand bellow average food. But I can't stand paying $120 and being treated rudely.

Elegant, classy 70s ambience. Gus was awsome , took care of us. The steaks are out of this world, also tried the lamb. Its tucked in the middle of downtown St Catharines.

Been coming here with my family for many years - and they’ve been coming for over 35 years. Arrived last night and wasn’t asked for vaccine status. Upon sitting down noticed that there were two staff members without masks, mingling with the clientele. Our server was wearing her mask under her mouth and the other staff member wore his mask under his nose. We felt extremely uncomfortable as we were dining with my elderly grandmother, and COVID numbers have been on the rise in Ontario, reaching numbers that are the largest since May. Unfortunately we decided to leave before ordering, and when we politely let the staff know why we were leaving he replied by saying that he was exempt from wearing a mask. We are not exempt from contracting/spreading COVID and there was not a single staff member wearing their masks properly. When dining out at a high class restaurant I expect to be taken care of, but the staff last night could not even bother to do their part to keep me and my family safe from a deadly disease. Be aware if you visit that they are not following COVID guidelines.

Melissa Schmidt

The food is perfection. The staff is more than friendly and impeccable in their manners and hospitality. If I could give them more than 5 stars I would. Can't say enough good things about it.

One of the most pleasant dining experiences I have had in years. I was in St. Catherine's for one night only and this place was recommended by several of the locals. They have been in business since 1974 and have maintained a very high standard in everything they do. Everything we (my wife, daughter, and I) ordered was excellent. The staff were very professional, courteous, and efficient. The main dining room on the upper level has a warm, relaxing atmosphere to enhance the dining experience. On the lower level is a large piano bar, a great place to relax with a drink.

Paul Sakalauskas

Covid Protocols are not something this restaurant takes seriously for both masks and capacity. I made reservations for Christmas Eve over a month ago. When Ontario cut the restaurant capacity by half due to Omicron, I checked to see if the reservation was still good. I was assured it was. When we arrived at the restaurant it was packed at 100%. Our server did not wear a mask and other servers were wearing them improperly. No one asked us for vaccination status until we asked if they wanted to see our documentation. They had a quick look and did not even ask for a photo ID. Our server was not wearing a mask and we asked him why. He said he was medically exempt. He shook other patrons’ hands, talked very closely to them, and walked around the whole facility. He even fixed our Caesar salad at our table side. Finally, we had a different server, and she was more considerate and made us feel a little safer. We will never- ever return to this restaurant. It was disgusting how they flaunted the rules and did not enforce what the Ontario government has put in place to make people safe when the numbers of new cases exceeded 9000!!!!

The Blue Mermaid chowder was really good perfect consistency and not salty. The seafood platter was also good and came with tiger shrimp, Canadian lobster, scallops, oysters Rockefeller, and king crab legs. I would post a pick but I ate it to fast. They definitely get the clean plate award. David, the server, also provided impeccable service. delicious

Eugene Djugashvili

The best restaurant in town and service is amazing.

Carmelina Crocco

We tried the blue mermaid for the first time today. when we walked in the place was eerily empty. we walked into the lounge and there was no one to seat us or even a bartender or server in site. If it wasn't for the 1 other couple sitting in the restaurant then we would have turned around and walked out. This place has the feel of swiss chalet in the 80s. severely outdated decor/menu. The food was pretty good which is why i am giving it 2 stars but the thing i cant get over is how expensive it is for what you get. I wouldnt mind paying $24 for a lobster sandwich if it came with more than 6 fries and was on sliced bread. the prices dont match the value and thats the biggest beef I have with this place. we spent over $50 and when we got home i had to et something because I was still hungry. Would not recommend. Go to sobeys, its the same quality.

Amazing food, food and great atmosphere. took my boyfriend here for his birthday the other night and it was absolutely amazing. Im a fish person so I got the Atlantic salmon and it was a very generous serving. It perfectly with the Hollandaise sauce they serve with it. My boyfriend got the peppercorn steak sirloin and I try to bite of it, it was the best steak I've ever had in my life. if you're looking for a great steak, skip the keg and come here instead you will not be disappointed.

haley shaw

Honestly wouldn’t go back. Food was pretty good, but overpriced. The waiter named Dave was somewhat rude to us anytime we had a question. It made the whole night fairly uncomfortable actually.

Lise Clayton

The food was great but there was a miscommunication with our reservation. Unbeknownst to us our staff Christmas party dinner was in the lounge instead of the dining room. Eating at a small table bent over with loud piano music was not the vision we had in mind.

Chill Machine

Great seafood and steaks too ! Great Caesar Salad made at. Your table fit two or more. Excellent service. A little expensive but worth it for the quality. This is a top St. Catharines restaurant.

Stefan T

Incredible service and food! This place is top notch! Went with a few friends and no complaints. Every course was exceptional! Plus the service was impeccable! These folks know how to take of people!

Gino Giuditta

Great food and service. Nick and his son do a great meal whatever you order

Ray L

As we are vulnerables and it was my wifes birthday we phoned in and they were most accomodating to us and we were able to do curbside pickup. My wife had most superb meal she has several food intolerances not to mention my own meal. It was so special to have an amazing meal even if it was from home. It was definitely made the evening special. Thank you, Nick, Tom and Viera and all who work at the Blue Mermaid. You made my wifes birthday feel very special!

Curtis Snider

We had an excellent experience. The surf and turf option (steak and lobster trail) for only $45 was a fantastic meal and deal! The casear salad was one of the best I've ever had, great entrees, and ended with a delicious Chocolate Mousse and ice cream. We will be back.

Terry Fraser

As per usual , it was excellent ! My friend (visiting from B.C.) had a steak that was done to perfection.. I had the Orange Roughy , also perfect , French onion soup , giant shrimp cocktail and Greek salad (could have had a bit more cheese) .. and great service ! If you haven't been there , you're missing a fabulous dining experience !

My wife and I have been at this restaurant at least eight times in the last two years. We always looked forward to it when we come into the area to visit a relative. This all ended last night, when we were served by a new waiter named "Dave". First, we ordered a glass of champagne for my wife. Dave said it was a fresh individual sized bottle, which we know as a "split". Splits are always brought to your table unopened and in the better places, the waiter then opens and pours at your table. He brought a small glass of champagne, 3/4 full, and obviously not fresh. We have been dining out long enough to know what a fresh glass of champagne looks, and tastes, like. We think he emptied an opened bottle of stale bubbly and tried to pass it off as a fresh split. Normally we would have walked out on the spot but it was late and I was starving so we forged on. When he brought my wife's oysters, he clumsily dropped a lemon wedge and fork in her lap. When I ordered my filet, I asked for it to be well done. Dave began ribbing me about the order, which was bizarre to say the least. A well done steak...not a difficult thing to do. He was asking stupid questions like..."what are you doing here...you're killing me". Huh??? I am "killing him" because I want a well done steak.? It gets better. A buddy of his, some guy in a sloppy hoodie and sweats, was at a table to our right, drinking a beer. Dave actually said to us that he would be busy talking with his bud, and we should "holler" at him when we wanted something. He then spent considerable time at this table with his back to us, and we had to listen to their personal conversation throughout most of our dinner. Wow. If we wanted this kind of bargain basement treatment, we would go to a greasy spoon. We tossed Dave a bone and left him a small tip because you can't help feel a bit sorry for someone so stupid, but we will NEVER be back to this restaurant. Sad because up until then, we really liked it.

Jane Pauel

I was a bit disappointed. Staff not wearing masks properly or not at all was unsettling. Food was good but not like I remember.

X Chang

I came to St Catherine’s for tourism and found this place as the best fine dining in town. However the steak was a disappointment. The exterior was so burned that each bite of it tasted bitter. Besides, we asked the steak to be done medium but it was too raw. The good part was that The onion soups was a bit too salty, and they charged that off from my bill.

Tina Larson

The blue mermaid is amazing ! I've been coming here since I was a baby. All the food is delicious! I usually get lobster bisque soup and oysters.. I shared the caesar salad (prepared at table-side) and the chateaubriand, carved and served table-side with a medley of vegetables. The salad was $25 for two and the beef was $85 for two.

Laura Carter

Walk in and walked out within 15 min. We were ignored at the door for an unreasonable amount of time. The hostess was unpleasant and cold as ice. Can’t speak to the food, but the service was absolutely snooty and rude. No thank you. Hire a new host to greet your guests with the friendliness and professionalism that your guests, who are about to pay for a nice meal, deserve. Will never spend my birthday here again. There are better places to go in Niagara.

Jack Levenstadt

Great Old School STEAK House. My Waiter was Fantastic and Nick the owner a real Gentleman. This Jack from Grimsby Ontario, and if you haven't been to Blue Mermaid go to downtown St Catherines, its 5 star all the way. Also a Great Piano ???? player super Nice Guy and he takes requests. I will be back next week. I love it.

Neil Lumsden

The food was, as its been in our other visits very good, the servers are real pros and are at a level matched by very few restaurants anywhere. There is still a place in our world for a tradition classic restaurant that my parents would appreciate and love. See you again soon. Cheers

Ray Cadorette

Exceptional service, quality and taste at a recent celebratory dinner my wife and I shared with our daughter and her husband. I was steered clear of a overly adventurous wine choice and gratified at having accepted our host's recommendation. Each of us loved our respective choices, particularly my daughter and her husband who were wowed at the dimensions and taste of the "Surf & Turf they chose. A far better experience than recent meals at high-end Steak restaurant chains they opined. My daughter shared a sample of her lobster tail and I heartily agree. Blue Mermaid is at the top of our choices for dependably superior cuisine and service

Austin Resch

Went for dinner with dad and brother on a week night around 7pm. It was my first time there and I had a very good experience. The day/time was not very busy, and the ambiance was very high end. I find this to be similar to Salvatores Italian Gardens restaurant in the US. The meal sizes were relatively good, not too small but could always be bigger. Definitely recommend this as a fancy dinner option

Kyle Lees

Absolute professional service. Price per plate it very high, but this is the kind of place where it's actually worth it.

Helena

Great food but horrible service. Servers didn't even wear masks properly. It was hard to get attention from server. But food was ok

G Colonna

This is a classic fine dining restaurant in St. Catherine's, also probably the only one in the city. The restaurant hasn't changed it's menu since it's inception. The service is top notch, the quality inn food is also high quality. The ambiance in the v restaurant could use some change. The process are higher because of the quality in food and service. I've never had a bad experience here and I've been countless times since I was a child.

Joyce Morris

Today was our first visit for lunch. The lobster sandwich was so flavourful and the Mediterranean seafood salad was bursting with seafood and fresh flavours. We enjoyed talking with the owner and were looked after by our server! We look forward to enjoying the piano bar and dinner service next!
