2 of us walked in at 7:31pm on 10/15/21. Website & google map says restaurant will close 8:30pm at the time. At least 4 empty tables we saw there. Being tourists from the west Host/server asked if we have reservation. We said no. He said "we are full for the night". We left, wasted parking. I can't say anything about the food, because we didn't have any.

Susan Janega-Baird

Absolutely delicious French dining experience, the ambiance was perfect and the service and pairing of the wine from Andrea couldn’t have complemented the food better.

Ronald Keeperman

Our dinner was fabulous and service was excellent. We had the onion soup which was really cheesy and delicious, mussels mariniere which were perfectly cooked and was a huge portion and the tuna tartare which was well seasoned and fantastic. A wonderful meal and great experience. Would return tomorrow! Haven’t been since last Friday! Here in Quebec City for 10 days and two nights were spent here at St. Malo. Food, service and ambiance fantastic! Bravo! Suzanne and John de Guelph!

Rachel Xie

The service was impeccable. Very friendly staff and the food was delicious.

Tyler Lee

We had an amazing dinner. Onion soup, osso buco and cassoulet. Sooooo good. Attentive service. Highly recommend!!!

Shaunna Hubert

What a cute and quaint place. I had a typical Quebec meal cousselet. It was like a stew. The place had a romantic tone to it.

Serge Malikov

It was a truly amazing experience to dine here. Recently renovated and under new management since Dec 2018, we visited this place in its first 3 weeks since reopening. The staff was very attentive and bi-lingual. We followed their recommendations and had an exciting dinner made with well-balanced ingredients. Desserts were a true delight (see pictures for a home-made profiterole with hot chocolate sauce), and we got another dessert from the Chef personally at the end of the evening. It was the best meal we had in a week spent in Quebec City - highly recommended!

Celina Ramsay

We found the food and service at this cozy cafe more than adequate. The menu offers a wide variety of choices at reasonable prices. Outdoor seating is also available. The location is superb with ample parking facilities in the area, art galleries, museums, and sightseeing boat rides just moments away. We would especially go back for the escargot in garlic sauce!

Karina Madore

The menu selection is great and the food was excellent! We really enjoyed our visit today at Bistro St-Malo! The owners are so charming, merci Andréa! Karina and Erik

We had high hopes for this place. It has 4 stars on Yelp and it's on a great cobblestone street. It has a quaint Paris cafe feel to it. Unfortunately, the food was not that great. I enjoyed my French onion soup, but my cheese platter was not good. My friends ordered the duck, rabbit, and steak and none of it stood out. It looks fancy, but tastes not so great. I'd recommend going somewhere else.

Steve Jung

Worst experience in a restaurant. The only server looks like a trump. Never cleans his hands after manipulating money and cards. He lied to us about the quality of the steak. I asked and insisted whether the steak was tender and assured me it was good. My wife and I had problem cutting the meat so there was so many fibers. I am sure its a recycled cow, on top of that we paid $86 just for the steak. Its a reap off. We didn't enjoy our meal at all so I gave 1% tips to the server for his bad service and his lies. He didn't like it and become agressive. I was going to call the police. Its a shame for the restaurant and the owner, who ever he is. Avoid this restaurants, there are plenty around to choose from.

Anisha George

The first night in Quebec City for my girlfriend and I was made even more special by our time spent at this charming restaurant! As many have mentioned in their review, the atmosphere was warm, inviting, and so genuine. It was almost like sitting down for a meal in a friends home. The food was delicious, decadent, and presented beautifully. Authentic French cuisine through and through, we enjoyed snails, duck, rabbit, and the best french onion soup I've ever tasted. All of this enjoyed with excellent Sangria; the perfect drink for a hot summer evening. To the wonderful wait staff and chefs in the kitchen, thank you so much for such a wonderful dining experience!!!

Dorothy Land

Frinkin fantastic. The food, ambiance and staff are exceptional. If you are in QC, you need to eat here. Fois Gras, duck confit, sweet breads......traditional French cuisine

James Kelly

My husband and I came here for dinner 2 years ago. Yes, late review! The food was delicious. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. We would highly recommend.

Patrick Flowers

The lobster roll was exceptional and was served with a delicious salad. The price was reasonable and the service was excellent! We spoke to the chef as we left and ended up getting a tour of the place, a recipe, and a great conversation too. We will definitely be going back the next time we're in Quebec City.

Amazing service !! Awesome food !! Well priced and beautiful presentation!! Perfect place in a busy downtown but quieter area with exquisite scenery!!

I was recommended by a friend to check out this restaurant during my visit to Quebec City from Ontario. I went here with my family and was greeted really warmly. They have by far the best onion soup and escargots! C'est fantastique! ❤ Highlight of this trip so far! Now waiting for the entrées:) Edit: The portion was so generous for the 3 entreees:filet mignon, mussels & Paella. Everything was cooked to perfection. I had a wonderful experience! Note, I also had my 1yo toddler and they brought a high chair for her with a tray too! The waiter kept checking on everyone and made sure we were happy. I would highly recommend this place :)

bob nash

Great food and price! A bit further from all the other restaurants but a hidden gem with shorter lines. Loved every single dish we got which is rare (duck leg, beef cheek, seafood stew, and filtered mignon). Definitely would recommend????

Shameer Zahid

It’s tiny and cozy restaurant. Onion soup and Poutine were delicious. I also ordered Mules Marinieres but the taste was very blend, would not get it again.

Service was great but the food was amazing. Had French onion soup and seared salmon -- both incredible. The place is small and filled up quickly; unless you get there right as they open, I recommend calling for a reservation. Very cozy place and reasonable prices for the quality of food.

I recently visited Quebec City with four college friends; we were all celebrating a milestone birthday (hint: we've been friends for 50 years). I chose Bistro St-Malo for our final dinner because I had lived in France's St Malo when I was a teenager, and because it was a short (flat) walk from our Airbnb. Andrea greeted us warmly and treated us like family. Pat loved the rabbit; Mary's steak-frites was done to perfection (mine, alas, was overcooked, which affected my overall rating; too much time in the sous-vide?); Karen's salmon was yummy and Debbie's pasta dish was devoured. I highly recommend this restaurant.

R0m

One of the best places in town, I highly recommend. The wines paired with the meals offer a sublime experience. They also have their menu available for takeout during Covid. Two thumbs up!

Our family of five came here for dinner on a Sunday evening in august. We made a reservation online through their website link. The reservation process was easy and quick. When we arrived, we were seated promptly. It was not busy at the time of our reservation at 5:30 p.m. There were only two staff working so there were small delays at times, but generally speaking, the staff were attentive and would respond to your requests in a reasonable time frame. We would give an overall rating about a 7.5 out of 10 for the quality of the food. The escargots was fairly standard and was tasty. The octopus was slightly overdone in the salad and lacked a bit of flavor. The paella was probably the star of the meal. It was a nice balance of rice and a variety of seafood. The amount of seafood that was actually in the dish was quite good. The filet mignon did not disappoint either. The fries were fresh and crispy. The duck leg confit was well like as well, the tenderness was just right and the skin was crispy as desired. Foie gras was expectedly good though I would have liked to see a couple of extra pieces of toast on the dish. The tatin was well liked by the teenagers and was a filling dessert with good portions. We sat outside, and the temperature was perfect in the evening. Occasionally, you're disrupted skateboarders whipping down the street but generally, there was ample space with pedestrians and they were not disruptive. The overall atmosphere was good, other patrons appear to be enjoying themselves as well. Our overall experience was positive enough that I would choose to return again

Maël Lavault

The food was great. Service likewise. I'd highly recommend you give this place a try if you are in Québec city.

Victoria P

A fantastic place for some fantastic food. It's off the beaten path, further from all the other main restaurants. Service and food were fantastic, give it a shot and you won't be disappointed.

Stanimir Cvetanov

They food is absolutely delicious!! I got rabbit dish. The meat is so soft and full of flavor! Also the potato (round shape in the picture) is surprisingly good! Must try restaurant in Quebec! Yummy

Rob Foster

Our server was a one woman show. Despite being very busy we weren't left waiting any time at all.The food was delicious, I would come back again.

Saved our Christmas night. Travelled from Ottawa to QC and could not find any restaurant that can accept our group (the trip was a bit spontaneous so we didn't plan accordingly) due to full occupancy everywhere. Saw this restaurant which is located right in front of our hotel and asked the staff if it's possible to do a takeout for 7 portions (they too are fully booked so I understand the strain on the chef to accept more orders). However they said yes they could do it and we had our Christmas dinner from the takeout and it was amazing. Of course nothing can beat dining in but the taste of the food was immaculate even though it's takeout. Thank you for saving our group's Christmas dinner!

Sean Moriarty

I can't recommend Bistro St-Malo enough! Andrea was so warm and welcoming. She is incredibly knowledgeable on the wine list (as she curates it). We started with the steak tartare and my husband and I both had the Lapin Bourguignon with risotto. Our dessert was incredible as well. We're still talking about our dinner! If we lived in Quebec City this would be our regular go-to place! Everyone took COVID regulations/precautions very seriously which made us feel so comfortable and they were also mindful of food intolerances which I really appreciated! Highly recommend!!

Annette Hentz

Great food, lovely atmosphere. Our server Ian was excellent. Cannot recommend this place enough.

I put this wonderful gem of a restaurant into the top 5 in Quebec City. An always improving menu.

Sam Wong

Was good food and quick service. Portions was good. Seafood Ragout was delicious. Quick in and out for our lunch meal. Deserves the great rating here.

Eve Ferrao

This is not for food, just for service for English Only customers. I was told the tables were full for today and asked if can reserve one for tomorrow. Since the staff was not comfortable speaking English, she said no, and asked me to call them instead when I was standing there and she was busy with other customers. Why I have to call them while there in person? If she can find another staff to help about reservation that would be nice. Though heard the food is great, this experience just made me feel not quite welcomed there unfortunately.

It’s a restaurant serving tourists. The food quality was below the average. It was disappointing.

GLOBEATER Montreal

Took us 10-15 minutes to get menus and water after we were seated and I still give 5 stars. That’s how good the food was. The salmon with gnocchi and wild mushrooms was one of the best dishes I have eaten.

Zecheng Zhang

Satisfied all my pent up desires for a genuine French comfort meal and I could come back for more again and again! Found plenty of parking within 5 minutes walk. Decided to sit inside due to occasional showers. Ordered the soup aux poisson which was surprisingly good with plenty of fish and shellfish bits in the soup. Asked for croutons but there was no rouille but we enjoyed it nevertheless! Had a glass of dry white wine with this course. The ordered the cassoulet which is one of my all time favorites and was not disappointed. Lovely duck leg and Toulouse sausage in a bean stew! Next time I’ll have moules mariniere and or boudin noir another if my childhood favorites! A great trip down memory lane!

Austin Graff

Excellent food and attentive service. Hubby had a large bowl of authentic French onion soup and a "small" kettle of mussels (almost more than he could eat). I had the pork hock with orzo pasta and veggies with warm French bread. It was all fabulous.

I still cannot forget the salmon I had that day! That is the best salmon I have ever tried! I usually do not like the salmon steak since I do not like the smell of salmon when it is roasted; but I love that salmon and really curious about how they cooked it. Many people recommended the duck, but I think the duck is not so amazing.

Good sea food restaurant. Very recommendable!!

A little treasure. Every bit of our meal was delicious. The service was top notch. We left seeking a wonderful, secret ingredient that had been used in one of our meals and found it at the Grand Marché. Pictures below. Sugar kelp. Who would have thought?

Sameer Vij

The service was great. Appetizers and desserts were awesome. I can't remember the exact name but their lemon ice cream dessert is a must try. They ran out of fish of the day and the alternate main that I ordered lobster roll was just okay, nothing really to ride home about. I went to try their fish and I was a little disappointed to learn they ran out.

Tina Di lembo

Food is acceptable. Wait staff was very good. Nice inside. I enjoyed the salmon I ordered, very good. But we also ordered Pesto pasta and it was not as good, it was not bad, just not great. But I wold go back.

Ilona Monbeig

Best food! Server taha was kind enough to suggest us awesome food & wine. Chef Philippe was super nice to accommodate a vegetarian and cook gnocchi for my wife. Seafood stew and onion soup were just unbelievablely tasty. If in Quebec, you have to visit here.

Aaron Waugh

If you can't be in St-Malo proper, this place is a brilliant taste of French culture in a beautiful nook of Quebec City. I give it my triple-eh rating.

Onur Ogucu

Amazing meal! Everything was delicious, but the French onion soup was incredible.

Justin Stone

Everything was amazing! The escargot was fresh! The onion soup was creamy ans savory! Salmon was just perfect and the rabbit was soft as well!

Tristan Theroux

We found this restaurant through trip advisor. We were initially cautious because there was no one else in the restaurant; however, we were so delighted by the food. We ordered the mussels, onion soup, and the fettucine. I would recommend all of these!!! The mussels were fresh and so flavorful with garlic. The fettucine is in a cream based sauce full of seafood and was seasoned so well. The onion soup is classic and all onion soup lovers should, without a doubt, order this! I am surprised there aren't more positive reviews! If you are craving mussels that are tasty and bang for your buck, Bistro St. Malo is a necessary food stop in Quebec City.

Bryan Zimmerman

We stumbled upon this spot while wandering around old Quebec and were very glad we stopped in for a meal. Even though we were a large group (14 in total) they managed to accommodate us and seat everyone together. A very cheery man came out to get us started with some water and it turns out he's actually the owner explained that he had bought the restaurant four months ago has been working from sunrise to sunset and loving every minute of it. He went into the kitchen and prepared all of our food by himself. Later on he came out again and thanked us and I can only say that I wish I was that happy in my job. It was very nice to see him enjoying himself so much. The food was gourmet level and very tasty, portions were very generous and my little boy fell in love with the Escargot. I'd definitely visit this place again for a wonderful meal and to see how the owner is making out. It was a very enjoyable experience overall.

Drake Finlay

We went on a whim. Small, quaint and warm. Staff was attentive and genuine. We ordered the cassoulet and beef cheek. Both were absolutely fantastic. Good wine list as well. It was a pleasant surprise. We look forward to a definite return visit.

Ali Hanyaloglu

Fantastic and cozy bistro in Old Québec City. Classically French but with Québec touches. Wine selection was great. Service delightful. But the food was amazing! Get the small pot of mussels unless you are sharing with a group. Look forward to going back.

Sarang Kang

Excellent food. Double excellent for services, love the homie vibe. We did not make reservation, but she is so nice to accommodate and make it work. The cassoulet maison is must...This is the best classic quebecois food you can find. I will give 10stars if I can.

Anthony McKinney

This place is all about location, food is ok (house salad with pickles is really good). It was the most expensive meal we paid in Quebec City but not the best one, so be careful when you order. Service was also very good, but I guess with those prices that has to be a given.

John Maynard

Owner change everything change, they don’t use high quality ingredients like before and the food tasted bad. They use a fking imitation crab for there pasta and frozen seafood for the fettuccini. May as well close this down so other restaurant can take the spot. I when here a few years ago and the food was fantastic.

Nadine Benny

Unfortunately, I was unable to visit as they had reached their limited capacity... Reservations recommended....

Julio Vergara

Delicious soup and salad, and the locale is like being in a time capsule. Beautiful space, perfect lunch spot.

Emilie Sharp

Food was excellent and so is the ambiance in this little French bistro. Not many tables so you NEED reservations. We saw at least 4 parties of 4 or less turned away. My wife got the salmon (excellent), i got the veal brains (im sure they were great just not for me) and my daughter got pasta which was just ok. I gave it 4 stars because the food was great quality and service was awesome. I just decided to try something I would not usually get so my fault. I would go back for sure. (This is our second time)

Maria Ostapenko

I had eaten here 2 years ago and had a wonderful experience so I was excited to come back but our meal the other night was a disappointment. To start the service, though very friendly, was extremely slow. I enjoy taking my time and not being rushed I also don't like waiting a very long time for meals and the check. My dinner was also disappointing. I ordered the ravioli and scallops and while the scallops were cooked well, the rest of the dish wasn't warm enough and the taste was just mediocre. My mother ordered the same dish and she thought the same.

Jennifer Urbanski

Great food and the chef/owner is just about the nicest guy you could ever meet. We’ve come here during the summer for the take-out window which was so positive during the lockdowns and restaurant closures. We’ve also ordered the takeout meals and had dinner in person at the restaurant. In any of these cases, St Malo always makes it feel special. It’s a “must-go” in QC. Merci!!

emilie gagnon

We were attracted to this place when we studied their menu while on a walk through the neighbourhood. Sweetbreads, calf's brain and rabbit sounded tempting. Among other things. When we passed by again around 17:30, we decided to give it a try and were not sorry. My wife's osso bucco was almost as good as her own, she said ;) My sweetbreads were better than I have had in living memory - fabulous. Service was good and friendly. Prices were well in line with the meals' quality and quantity. The ambience is pleasant old world charm. Nothing hi-tech here! Everything is mellow, warm and friendly, if a little crowded. The place is very small: only thirty seats inside, so I would strongly recommend to make reservations. While we were there, they must have turned away at least six parties because there was no more room.

Juan Isaza

Delicious and slow. Worth every penny spent and minute waited.

John Dougherty

Delicious classic food, the duck was easily falling off the bone. Super friendly staff/cooks were very accommodating to a dairy allergy.

A Chan

Fabulous evening at this cozy french bistro in old Quebec last night. Delicious food and wine! Great staff and owner. Hidden gem. Will definitely visit again.

Ryan Smith

Great food! I had the beef tartare and I was fan.

winnie thai

Cool cocktails and delicious escargot. Cool dining in vibes.

Alan O

It is a very cozy and small restaurant. Environment and ambiance was nice but the kitchen was slow due to sheer volume of patrons but the wait staff were friendly. We had waited about 45 minutes before receiving our appetizers but we had bread and butter while we waited. Delicious btw! Food was good. The dessert was amazing. Overall it was a good experience as we weren't in a rush but the wait for the food was exceptionally long.

Patricia Chiavuzzo

Excellent! Exceptional dining experience. Food was delicious. Warm and inviting atmosphere. Will definitely return on our next trip. Is a must when visiting Quebec City.

Janet Austin

Ambiance full of character, accompanied by friendly, helpful, and patient staff.

Kenneth Vaz

Was hoping to taste the great taste of french cuisine same as France, this is not as best as the one I ate in Lyon but it surely did cook well too. Bread is good and so is soup, yet maybe a bit too much pepper in the soup making it a bit too spicy, but having cold weather like today -6 °C, why not to have some spicy food? :p The plate is too big, but I ate them all because it was tasty. I live in Asia, probably won't have chance to visit it again, for those who have, I recommend you to go there and have a try! :D

Melanie Rosen

Cannot leave Quebec without stopping by. Great food in a very nice but unpretentious place. You will feel welcomed here. Food was amazing and prices adequately set for the quality of the food.

Susan Zhang

Great duck confit poutine. Good onion soup and connard confit. Friendly waitress. Ps: Almost all people ordered mussel, curious about how the mussesl tastes like....

vw

Yesterday we had a dinner at Bistro St. Malo. The food was great, big portions as you can see. We ordered mussels in Provençal sauce, escargots, carrot orange soup, cassoulet and osso bucco. All were well prepared, very flavourful and the seasoning was bang on. The duck confit in cassoulet had the right amount of salt. The osso bucco was so tasty and the meat fell of the bone. Our apple pie with sorbet and amaretto creme brûlée were awesome too. All those with a reasonable price. I recommend this restaurant to anyone coming this way!

Tal Feldman

Great presentation, taste, try Quee Anne beer.Vanessa was excellent, like Houston. Tx costumer services

Eric Fleischman

We had escargot and onion soup as a starter and eggplant gratin and mussles for the main. Everything was so yummy even the bread they offer. It's a small, cosy restaurant. The lady who serves was friendly. If you want some french food experience, this is the place to go. Btw the price shon on their website is not up to date. The actual price of food is slightly higher than you see on theirwebsite.

Sarah Becker

Amazing service with fantastic food! Everything about my experience was great. Server was quick and polite, and very welcoming. The food was some of the best food I've had in awhile. Zero complaints about Bistro St-Malo.

Excellent French cuisine without pretense! I had the escargot and ended up with half my wife's French Onion soup, both were amazing. The waiter recommended rabbit for my wife and sweetbreads for me. Both were stupendous! I have only had sweetbreads once which was at a Michelin three star restaurant in NYC and these were every bit as good. For those who may be a bit hesitant about the sweet bread as an entree, I would implore you to try them! Great service, warm atmosphere and amazing food. There is nothing more to ask for in a restaurant!

Steven Careccia

Great food. Quaint little spot serving quality french food

Micha

Authentic Quebec experience!!! We’re coming back to this place for a 4th time and it has always been a fantastic experience! French Onion soup and Duck Confit are to die for! They have great local beers, double blanche is amazing! Definitely recommend this place! We usually find parking right on the street in front of the restaurant.

Mike Catanzaro

We were travelling from Calgary and heading home to Nova Scotia and had a stopover in Old Quebec City. We came across some positive reviews about this little bistro so decided to try it out. Ian was our amazing waiter. The french onion soup and mussels were awesome followed by the delicous seafood stew. We loved all of it but the best was getting to know the owner over a drink of Belle de Brillet liqueur and cognac. We highly recommend this wonderful little Bistro and will definitely be back. Thank you Susan Janega-Baird and Danny Baird

A small cafe with a daily special menu on top of their permanent menu in the old Quebec area. The staff was very kind and welcoming. The meal was good, however for a meal that didn't required muck cooking if any, took quite some time to come out.

G A

The duck and fish soup are a must have. Duck is arguably the best I've ever had. Service is great. Very nice cozy and classic looking restaurant. Highly recommended.

Jn

Amazing restaurant and food in Québec City. Service was above and beyond, the person who served us was super friendly and caring. The cook even went as far as to cook the fries right before we pick up the food to make sure they were hot and crispy by the time we receive them. As for the food we took the tuna tartar and seafood stew, both excellent and delicious dishes. I highly recommend this place if ever you are looking for a heartwarming dining experience.

Roméo Devereaux

This was the first place I visited in Quebec city, and quite honestly I didn't expect anything special. I just wanted a nice dinner after the long drive. As soon as I can walked in I was amazed by the interior. It just felt so cozy, and nicely decorated. Service was friendly. I ordered the duck which was quite delicious. Overall I can't wait for the next time I'm in Quebec city to visit that place again. Surprisingly it's not overpriced considering the location.

Kyle Ticehurst

Pretty Good, my boyfriend had a steak, I had the escargot and a beef tartare with salad and fries, we both had beer. I liked the escargot, didn't like the beef tartare too much, I enjoyed the rest, my boyfriend enjoyed his. The chef and waitress were both friendly, very overworked and running around quite a bit because it was packed with more people coming in all the time, it is a small place but very cosy

forgetititititit

This was our favourite restaurant in Quebec. The service was phenomenal and the food was so fresh and full of flavour. We had fish and a seafood ragú... Both were amazing. It is such a cozy little place but you need a reservation because it's very popular.

Dave Fox

What an amazing restaurant! We were English, Canadians and Americans and each and everyone of us loved this restaurant! Probably the most affordable restaurants in Quebec but the quality and presentation was second to none. Highly highly recommend.

Alex Pridatko

The duck confit was amazing. It was the best tasting one I've tried. The place is cozy and the service is good. We were in and out pretty quick.

David Cheung

Unbelievable experience! We were treated like family and Andrea was so accommodating for us and our infant. The food was spectacular - I will dream of the duck for a long time!

Al Sug

Service was amazing and food was really good. Small cozy place that can be romantic and friendly at the same time. Menu is offering a nice variety of choice and anything you will choose, well you will not be disappointed. Waiter was not bothering us, he answered our question really nice and even suggested us on some item on the menu, and to conclude everything he even suggested some activity to do afterwards. Round off I recommend this place to anyone who wants a nice meal !

Joyce Kang Alex

So happy we fell on this amazing restaurant. The seafood ragu and fish of the day was out of this world. I finished the whole plate and drank the sauce !!! Truly a passion for food and cooking. The owner served us and gave us impeccable service ! Really had a wonderful time and definitely a must visit restaurant ! This review is coming from an italian Montrealer who knows good food !

Samir Girgis

Very accommodating to take us earlier than our reservation. This wonderful bistro in old Quebec City, lives up to its billing. One of the best French Onion Soup I've ever had. The Tart Tatin was very very good. The octopus was unfortunately dry and way overcooked. Regardless, a great evening. Would definitely go back!!

Tyler Middleton

Nice place. And really French food. I have never thought that paelia goes with the duck or chicken...but it does. So... really good. :). Good luck for your business

Stacey Young

Delicious food and excellent customer service.French onion soup was really good..we had their rabbit dish which was flavourful..They went an extra mile to pack the French onion soup for the take out!!! Highly recommended!!!
