Fresh Vegetables! We know this part of the country where fresh vegetables is more expensive than fresh fish. After having lots of fish n chips, we finally found this place where fresh leafy greens are served. Good food, good portions. It’s definitely recommended for visitors who want something not deep fried.
Great food and reasonably priced. A nice find!
Terrible coffee, overpriced food, mediocre service
awesome food!
My son and I found this little gem right at the bottom of the hill from where our Air B n B was located. We were greeted immediately and given the option to eat in the cafe or the restaurant upstairs. We chose the cafe. We shared a pulled pork wrap, homemade Mac n Cheese and creme brule for dessert. All was delicious and reasonably priced. Even got myself a cute little art piece as a souvenir. ????
We had two meals at this lovely restaurant. Can’t say enough good things about this restaurant! The food was excellent and very well presented. I would highly recommend this place to anyone!
Best place in NL breakfast superb and dinner was fantastic, service very professional
Great food, good atmosphere, lovely view.
One of my favorite places to eat in all of Newfoundland. Clearly there is lots of experience in the kitchen as the dishes come out in perfect design with the best in taste. Love all the veggie and gf options. The decor is special as is the view.
Beautiful decorated inside. Friendly and good service....the cappuccino and the blue berry cake was good.
I ordered the cod cakes on the recommendation of a friend. No regrets there, they were excellent. I was quite hungry though so I also got the pesto cream mussels and the seafood chowder, both were quite scrumptious.
Multiple visits to this lovely place and I have never been disappointed. The sunsets are a welcomed sight through the windows over dinner. The meals have always been delicious and the portions more than generous. The waitstaff have always been very helpful and friendly. Don't skimp on viewing the art in the restaurant and the pieces for sale! There are some spectacular talents on display.
The mussels is so perfect, I really recommend the cod tongue! Btw the rabbit and lobster noodle are good! Amazing food in Gros Morne!
Food was delicious, probably the best meal we had during our holiday on the whole island. Service was impeccable and really overall a nice surprise. Don’t miss it.
Great wraps!
Fantastic dinner!! They have vegan options (without having to substitute a million things!)
Loved it. Best coffee in town. Ribs were shockingly great...not Memphis good but close. Great local art on the walls as well.
Not much food - very expensive.
Great place, and excellent staff and food!
We had breakfast here this morning, and we each ordered a Lobster Benny. The portions were good and the flavours were fantastic! The lobster and eggs were cooked to perfection.
The place is small, so it can only seat so many people at once.
Overall, the staff and food made an excellent experience for us! If you are in the area, we would high recommend this restaurant!
Good food enjoyed a healthy lunch there!
Very cute and elegant atmosphere, nicely decorated with like 50+ Gros Morne paintings on the wall. Cafe on the fist floor and lunch/dinner tables on the second. Better to do reservation beforehand since this place is popular.
The Best!
Great place! Enjoyed two cold beers with our amazing entrees. The Cod, which was pan fried and served with roasted potatoes and steamed veggies, which was a nice change from deep fried fish. The Rabbit pie was also so good and flaky! Service was excellent considering we didn't have a reservation and the place was packed! Definitely book a reservation, you don't want to miss this place
(Translated) Very good restaurant in which it is essential to book, even out of season. The welcome is at the café on the ground floor where you will wait a few minutes before being placed upstairs. The seafood is local and very fresh. The portions are generous and the original recipes (mussels with soy sauce). The service is nice. The room is quite small and the tables are very close to each other so the place is a little noisy. If you are window side, you will have a nice view of the harbor. Very good but a little expensive all the same.
(Translated) By reservation only and we understand why! The only restaurant in the region that goes beyond the traditional "dinner" meal on the waterfront to offer a refined experience and delicious cuisine. (Original) Sur réservation seulement et on comprend pourquoi! Seul restaurant de la région qui sort du traditionnel repas de "dinner" sur le bord de l'eau pour offrir une expérience raffinée et une cuisine délicieuse.
Great food, great view, and a very cozy atmosphere.
We caught this spot at a weird time I guess.. Breakfast ends around 11 and lunch starts at 12. So we ordered wraps from the fridge. Our initial server was quite crabby (perhaps with our timing) but the second lady was sweet as pie. They were taken into the back and prepared but oddly not heated up, nor was it offered. Had a cold pulled pork. We got a scone as well and I did get that warmed up to soften. They were nice wraps- but our bill was $42.00 for a pretty basic meal. Would likely go back for lunch but not going out of my way.
Went through here last September, and forgot to write a review! This place is great! We happened upon it because the restaurant we were pointed to in town was full due to an event. Am I ever glad that happened! Java Jacks is fantastic. You have to check it out if you're passing through Rocky Harbour. It was the most memorable restaurant from my entire trip in Newfoundland. The restaurant is small, so seating would difficult to come by on a busy evening. Luckily, we were there in the off season so we walked right in. The staff was great, and the menu interesting. I still remember what we ordered - Salmon and scallops. Both items were incredibly delicious (pan-fried I believe?) and had a golden brown coating on them. Very tasty. If I remember correctly, it might have been a touch pricey for the budget-conscious traveller, but VERY well worth the experience. If you're around, check it out.
Excellent food and friendly Service
Before I could get out of the car, the owner asked that I move it across the street in front of the bank. Then she allowed someone else to park exactly where I was. Waitress clearly didn't want to be there that night. Food was good, but over priced: $28 for 6 slices of pork tenderloin, $28 for salmon, $38 for some lobster in pasta and $9 for a Newfoundland beer. Feels like they used to be awesome, but have since then forgotten how they got there. You'll want to like it, but you probably won't.
Excellent fish cake!!! Their signature Million Dollars relish was recognized as the best, by my father-in-law. The food are great and the prices are reasonable. The environment is great and homey. The downside is that the place is too small. Love the place. We were there for 4 days and came here for two lunches. Strongly recommend this place for fish cakes :)
Great service and food!
The cafe downstairs is excellent
The service was excellent and so was the food! New owners this year revamped the menu and it's mouth watering! Recommend the Sticky Taffy Pooding for dessert. MAKE RESERVATIONS FOR DINNER! Otherwise you'll not get in. ENJOY!
Unusual but homey.
BEST meal of our trip to NL! The mussels are delicious and the pecan and apple salad is to die for! Staff are friendly and service is fast. Cozy atmosphere with local craft beer options! Highly recommend this spot in Rocky Harbour!
Excellent location, food and staff. If I ever drive 7 hours to get here again I'll definitely be back.
Good place to have a breakfast.
The dark roast has a smokey flavour and high acidity - not my favourite but it was enjoyable. The classic bacon and eggs tasted like home. Like the cozy atmosphere. However, if you are after good coffee, paninis and pastries, I would go to Old Town in Norris Point.
Had a great takeout meal here with the family. The short menu has plenty of variety and everything we had was delicious. Recommended.
Wow! Excellent food. We had three nights in Rocky Harbour. We had dinner at Java Jack's twice. The food is awesome and the restaurant has an wonderful view right onto the harbour. I would definitely go there again if back in Rocky Harbour.
Excellent Service!! Food is divine! Sea food chowder, Best Ever!!!!!!!!!! Seriously! STOP HERE!!
Excellent restaurant. You have to try their signature recipe of Linguini and Lobster.
Great breakfasts! YUM! We ate here twice during our short stay.
I just happened upon this resturant. The lobster linguini was amazing and deicious! Quaint resturant that has hidden gem - a delicious menu.
Went in and lady looked very annoyed. Was told lunch starts at noon and when I asked about other places to have lunch in town was given another annoyed look and lady said she wasn't sure
Very good food!
food is delicious, had an anniversary dinner and enjoyed every bite
Food and service were good. We ate here a few years ago and the food was outstanding and certainly in line with the price. We weren't wowed this time, for the price, but everything was delicious and will certainly go again. They did accommodate a picky palate, so that was good service.
The seafood chowder is great, crispy cod tongue is a must try
decent food, but you aren't getting what you paid for. Service has been friendly the couple times I've been.
The food was really delicious and we had a very kind waiter would recommend 100%
Exquisite
Lovely little spot with great service. The coffee and food was top notch!
Me and my wife had a really nice dinner at this restaurant. First of all, they have the best customer service in this area. They're also very vegetarian-friendly. And we found their meals were a lot healthier than what was served at the other restaurants. Although they might seem a bit pricey, they actually are worth it.
Food was delicious but coffee is terrible
Fish cakes were great, friendly staff.
Food was delicious, our waitress was extremely friendly and appropriately attentive throughout our dining. Definitely recommend making a reservation. The place fills up super fast!
Light and delicious food, nice ambience and friendly service
(Translated) Nothing special to complain about: good service, interesting map and the food was good. Nice view if you are at the window. But quite expensive for what it is in the end. You should book to be sure to have a table. (Original) Rien de spécial a reprocher : bon service, carte intéressante et la nourriture était bonne. Belle vue si vous êtes à la fenêtre. Mais assez cher pour ce que c'est au final. Vous devriez réserver pour être sûr d'avoir une table.
**Ciliac/Gluten Sensitive Beware** Thought it would be great. It wasn't. Seating aside - sitting pretty much on top of strangers isn't my thing. If I wanted that, I'd go to Europe. The hour+ long wait? Meh, I've worked in restaurants, it happens. No, what ruined it was that from the moment I booked the reservation, they were aware a GF guest was coming. It was reminded to them. Yet a senior member of the staff, who was trying to be helpful, brought us a complimentary cream soup. Err, okay, questioned that one, but she insisted it did not contain flour, just cream. So I mentioned how bechamel based soups are made... With a roux. She thought she should at that point check - though previously trying to ensure it was all good. She returned and confirmed it was indeed a roux containing soup - so wheat. Should have left at that point. Cod arrived. And it had a crust on it. Ask a different waitress to confirm what it was, returned saying it was starch. Should have refused it then. But, it's Gross Morne, not many options to eat. I was starving. An hour later, as I write this, I would have been better off not eating anything at all. Note to restaurants: I get there are a lot of twits who come in shunning gluten/wheat because some celebrity is pushing a new fad diet. But for a lot of us, it isn't a fad, it's something we have to deal with and live with. If you cannot accommodate people with food allergies, just bloody well say it upfront. All that aside - cod was tasteless. Vegetables raw. The little tomatoes as a sauce/garnish and the two pieces of caggabe, pretty good.
Great food, but make reservations, it was packed and there was an hour long wait even in the middle of the week. The coffeeshop downstairs is a nice place to sit and the drinks are great
We came here three nights in a row, basically thought this was the best food around ????. We tried the salmon, fish cakes, mussels, lobster, soups and rabbit en croute ! :). Everything was excellent, but I especially enjoyed the salmon and rabbit. The mussels with tomato were also amazing. Loved the spicing of the various soup broths(chili, borscht, potato)/ rabbit stew. Very balanced and flavourful. Good portion sizes. Didn't try the cafe, but the baked goods looked great. Cozy dining room with nice ocean views. Highly recommend!
Dropped in for dinner recently and was pleasantly surprised. They were a little busy but we were able to get a table. If going for dinner I would probably recommend making a reservation. For our meal we had the Mussels as a starter and Lobster Linguine as the main. Both dishes were very flavorful. There is no air conditioning so it was a little warm upstairs, and they really need to add something chocolate to their desert menu.
Very good an refined kitchen
Stopped by at 8:45 am. Closed. Hours were listed as opening 8:30 on the website and here on google.
Loved it ????
We had our 30th anniversary supper there a few days back. Excellent meal, excellent service loved the decor.
Great food and coffee
Great food, service and location.
Stopped in for lunch. Had great salads. Unfortunately, our visit was a bit rushed when we realized that our itinerary was tighter than we had thought so didn't get to try the coffee or desserts, but the salads were some of the best we've had in awhile.
Edit: I don't think it's sincere for you to acknowledge that I have an opinion and then try to correct me when we share opposite experiences and perceptions of what's fresh or not. I’m sorry you’re struggling with costs and fresh item procurements, but none of these are direct responsibilities of mine. As a paying customer, I am very disappointed in your response, and hope your team can take a more direct approach to addressing your customers needs in the future. We ordered the lobster sandwich dish, and we could tell from tasting it that the lobster had been frozen. If I’m paying over $30+ for a lobster sandwich, you’d at least expect something fresh, especially given that this is Newfoundland. I asked the local hotel owner about this restaurant and he also suggested some other alternatives to get fresh seafood, because this place seemed more like a tourist trap than an authentic restaurant.
Food is pricey but amazing. Despite the look of the place you can expect a fine dining experience. The restaurant is clean. The staff was friendly and efficient. If I was in town again I would swing by for sure.
Great food, nice people
I loved this place. The service was great the atmosphere is cute and all the food was amazing. We got a lobster sandwich and sea food chowder and fish cakes, which where all amazing.
Fabulous breakfast. The lobster benny is to die for - the hollandaise is perfect and the hash browns are crispy and delicious. My partner and I shared the lobster benny and the pancakes with partridge berry compote, yoghurt, and real maple syrup. The tartness of the yoghurt and berries balances perfectly with sweetness of the pancakes and syrup. The ambience is warm and cozy and the staff are as friendly as you’d expect from the locals in this lovely community. It’s also a gallery and you can buy prints from very talented local artists. The cafe also has amazing lemons scones and you can get coffee and wraps to go. All in all a worthwhile place to stop or even go a bit out of your way to visit. Definitely recommend.
Cute Cafe with amazing food. It was perfect! Fresh baked goodies in the Am. I got my partridge berry fill with a muffin. We also ordered the pancakes, with fresh made jam and yogurt, and eggs Benedict breaky. Jam was for sale and some other local items for sale. Definatley check out this place!
Good food and coffee
I would give zero star if I can. Horrible experience with this restaurant! we have came for 4 times: 1st time we were told we have to do the reservation, 2nd time we were told there are only 2 time slots can be picked for reservations, 3rd time we were told that there is no need to do the reservation and we can just come. 4th time we waited for around 10minutes, we were told they have no capacity to serve us now! Feeling so bad as they have no customer service sense.
Amazing place and people. Ordered the chowder and the chicken parm and both were incredible dishes. Definitely book a reservation if you want a spot, and trust me, you want a spot. I would happily rush back here any time. Cheers.
Java Jack's was wonderful. In a Newfie land of deep fried foods, Java Jack's provides a delicious menu of tasty alternatives. I couldn't have asked for more. Their blackened cod with tomato confit and seasonal veggies was satisfying and the dessert of fig "pudding" with ice cream and Irish caramel sauce was divine. EAT HERE.
Thank you kindly for our delicious meal and warm conversation! We immensely enjoyed the fish and fresh vegetables , all perfectly prepared ! We even enjoyed the cod tongues!!!
We went multiple times. The cafe also has great selection of drinks. The chowder was the best.
Nice food, worth a visit... but book
Found this hidden gem. Absolutely amazing seafood chowder. Service was excellent even though we sat down after closing time. Colleen the owner was wonderful to us and great to talk to about the area.
amazing vegan lasagna made with sauteed spinach, a tofu/chickpea filling which was creamy and delicious. tomato sauce was plentiful and seasoned to perfection. The chef also made me a vegan pavlova made with aquafaba/sugar meringue, creamy coconut cream and balanced to perfection with tart/tangy local partridge berries. My daughter had lobster and linguine which had a sauce made with onions, garlic, carrots, mushrooms and lobster reduction. Pasta cooked to perfection. the place was filled with locals and tourists and had art on the walls made by local artists.
Great food and services. I reserved 1 day in advanced. But when we were there around 17:30, there were 1 large and 2 tables empty. Lobster sandwiches seemed very popular and several guests ordered it. photos: seafood chowder cod tongues rabbit en croute pan seared cod
(Translated) Refined cuisine, an attentive Chef, quality service. Succulent! A must in the area for eating well. (Original) Une cuisine raffinée, une Chef attentionnée, service de qualité. Succulent ! Un incontournable dans le secteur pour bien manger.
The menu is small but every item is perfected, staff is friendly and if you ask in advance they will pack a lunch for people going on early morning hikes.
Great meal, I enjoyed the rabbit en croute very much.
Excellent
Absolutely delicious, well-priced, and great service!
Food was excellent! Worth stopping by this place if you are in Rocky Harbour!
Hearing the name "Java Jake's", we expected this to be a cafe, perhaps in some respects it is, but the dinners are truly gourmet. Only wanting a smaller option, we choose the seafood chowder which was superb, loaded with fish, scallops and mussels in a rich creamy base. We also shared fish cakes and cod tongues, a Newfoundland delicacy. Both were excellent, complimented by tasty sauces. There was a range of meal options for dinner, prices are on the higher end of moderate for entrees. It's acute restaurant with dining areas upstairs as well as down, throughout the rooms of this modified historic home.
Very good quality food and welcoming host.
Great food and great overall experience. We've been seated by the owner herself and she gave us a good introduction to the menu. We liked the place and the food so much that we came back for a coffee the next day and we were not disappointed once again. A must while in Rocky harbour
Aside from the wait for getting a seat the food and service was great. One of the best lobster sandwich I've ever had.
Fabulous food and service. A must visit
Had the lobster benny and it was delicious. Home fries were okay. Coffee was great. Prices are high. $3.75 for one baked good. Very Disappointed when we wanted to take the rest of our coffee to go and was told no that the take out cups were too expensive. Even though we spent $60 ☹
Beautiful location, good cup of coffee, great place to go for breakfast. Eggs and bacon done right, great benedict. Lots of local art on display, friendly staff. Even my partner who doesn't consider himself a breakfast person thought it was great.
(Translated) Very good salmon (Original) Tres bon saumon
As indicated previously, items are overpriced; however, it is in the middle of a national park. Additionally, as with most of newfoundland except St. John's, there are miserably few vegan options. In fact, only one dinner offering, a zucchini spiraled pad thai. Likewise, the coffee shop offers oat and almond milk, but was out of oat milk. Small concerns related to management and coordination, but key customer care factors. It's not a bad little spot, but to include some vegan baked options and complete dinner options would make a difference.
The food and staff awesome!!!
Really enjoyed lunch here after kayaking at Norris point. Great cod au gratin and amazing soups (both chowder and pea soup). Salmon bowl was also a standout. Relaxed but attentive service. If you are in the area try to stop in
We had both lunch and dinner here. Excellent service, delicious meals. We had the encrusted cod and salmon with chutney. Creme brulée was first rate, too.
It was probably the best meal I had in Newfoundland. The cod was delicious as was the chicken and the salad was a treat after only Roman lettuce salads. I would highly recommend Java Jacks to anyone staying in the area.
Decent cappuccinos and delicious food! Would love to see more desserts in the coffee shop, had just the usual assortment of cookies, muffins etc.
