Nice ambiance, spacious (nice during COVID!), very friendly waitstaff, delicious food, very generous portions and reasonable prices. Overall a great experience & great value. I'll be back for sure! It's great to have a new option for a nice night out.

Food tasted good. Service was great. Portion sizes of the food were kinda small. We all had higher expectations of this restaurant I suppose. The seafood platter portion size is very small to what we thought. Mussels were a bit off (5 mussels), smaller lobster tail, coconut rice (tasty) veggies (beets and carrots), prawns. Calamari was good. Prawn Gratin was good. Red wine was served in wet glasses.

My wife and I had a very nice dinner at The View, a hidden gem on the Newcastle Island Passage in Nanaimo. A modern looking Grill at the marina, but friendly and casual, with very nice staff. After a late lunch we were looking for a lighter meal. My wife had the Red Thai Coconut Curry noodle bowl and I had grilled Salmon with the seasonal vegetables. The food was very reasonably priced, well prepared, and very tasty, and we finished the meal with a wonderful Creme Brulee. Highly recommended.

Tuesday date night. Covid restrictions have been lightened and we can dine indoors again. With the hardships the restaurant industry has faced, one would assume any establishment hoping to save themselves would bring their A-game. Online reviews all seemed to rave about The View, photos and descriptions of their menu items were drool-worthy. After several shockingly disappointing meals out during Covid times, we were full of optimism that tonight's meal would be outstanding and deliciously memorable. Not the case. We'll begin with our Caesars, spicy, too much Worcester. Next, appys. We ordered the calamari, it was delicious! Not greasy, at all. Although my hubby isn't convinced it was actually squid... We ordered our meals (sesame crusted tuna and the steak oscar). We then proceded to wait close to an hour for the main course. We were close to leaving when finally our food appeared. The tuna was mediocre, edible, somewhat underwhelming and not overly flavourful. The rice was dry and bland, the coleslaw was under sauced and also basic in flavoring. THE VEGETABLES WERE AMAZING (except for that one undercooked carrot). The beets and roasted carrots, mmmm, I could have eaten a whole plate of those and been a happy customer. Now, for the steak. My hubby makes delicious steaks at home, he cooks them with care and attention and love and it shows. He asked for a medium rare steak. When it arrived it was sadly, obviously, well done and chewy. He didn't want to say anything because he felt badly, and well, I think we're all a little worried about what happens behind that swinging kitchen door when people send food back. They took his plate back to redo the steak. When it returned, after I was done my meal (of course I shared while he sat with no dinner), there was an additional helping of vegetables and roasted potatoes. The steak this time was rare, still chewy and covered in gravy. He ate it, more out of hunger than anything. The potatoes, cooked ok but boring in flavour. Back to the drinks, they advertised "prosecco", $6/glass. Upon asking it was discovered their prosecco was in fact "Baby Canadian"...what?! Thats barely a sparkling wine! And as for the wine, well I won't mention the house wine is boxed because I'm sure most restaurants do that, but dang...what a markup!! At the end of it all, the long wait, the disappointing food, undesirable drinks, what could we do but laugh. In an industry that is supposedly starving for support, why when I spend over $100 on a meal for two am I left disappointed and feeling as though I've wasted my money? Long story short, I wouldn't eat here again and I will be sharing my experience with those I know so they don't waste their money too.

Horrible service. Our server neglected our table, didn’t bother to offer water refills and hardly checked on us. When our food finally came it was cold and bland. We hardly ate our meal and our server didn’t ask if everything was okay when it obviously was not. Do not spend your money here , there are far better restaurants in town to spend your money and time at.

To be honest not the best place for having a dinner. Some of the main dishes were too salty, poor choice of drink if you’re not planning to get some wine of course. However onion soup rises rating to 3 stars. Have to admit that was pretty delicious

7 of us dined for a Birthday celebration and each of us enjoyed meals that were simply fantastic! Cod, tuna, halibut, lamb where every item was on point. The serving staff, a couple of free birthday deserts and the location really topped it all off. We will be back again very soon!

Hidden off Stewart Avenue and on the waterfront is this quaint place with absolutely delicious food! I ordered a garden Greek salad with garlic prawns, which was amazing. The salad was the best Greek salad I have ever had, not oily and very flavorful. The prawns had plenty of garlic, just the way I like them, yummy ???? My daughter ordered the steak sandwich and gave me a bite of the steak, melt in your mouth steak. Definitely a 5 star! Fine dining at its best!

We enjoyed our 45th wedding anniversary there and absolutely everything was fantastic! The food was excellent and so beautifully presented. Our server, Rebecca was wonderful, timing everything perfectly and so friendly! We had the Linguini Capesante, the Tuna Poke and the East Meets West Calamari. So good, next time it'll be hard to choose something different!

My husband and I love this restaurant. Very delicious food and there are healthy options. The chef is talented at layering flavours - he has an impressive palate. There is a very good selection of food here and reasonably priced for the quality (comparable to other upper scale restaurants in Nanaimo). I miss the old location as that patio was massive and very inviting, but the new spot isn’t too bad. The only negative thing I think would be our server was super awkward but I think she must’ve been training so maybe she was nervous. Otherwise, it was a lovely dining experience and we will be back.

Went here for an anniversary dinner, staff were great, really friendly. Really pricey for the portions given but that is to be expected in an upscale place like this. Only issue we had, being so close the the kitchen, was the fruit flies coming out and hovering around while we were eating. But the food was great, really well done.

Honestly, I had high hopes and was excited to eat here because of all the hype. I left feeling pretty bummed out. The prices were waaaay too high for the quality of food. The wine was $25 / half glass which is nuts. Service was decent (friendly). I'd like to think it was a one time occurrence that it was so unimpressive, but at their prices I'm not willing to take the risk again. Their chicken pasta was very blah. I've paid far less for far better. At $125 for a meal for my guest and I that left us both unsatisfied, I wouldn't do it again :( And reading the responses from the owner on other comments, it seems that there's a bit of a bad attitude present as well. Especially the response about how the customer should learn to read the menu. Sorry guys, but I have to be honest; I expected better. Much better. The market is very populated, and there's no room to be mediocre at astronomical prices and offer a bad attitude while you're at it.

So I was with Mathieu and you are either not the girl at the door or wrong about what happened because it was only when we indicated that we would be willing to wait the hour that she made it clear that she actually was not going to be able to serve us at all. Took in dinner with friends at The View, the menu was impressive with a broad range of selections. The service was prompt and friendly and our group ordered pasta, steak & salads, the presentation of the meals was very nice The Steak was a huge chunk of meat grilled to perfection and the Linguini Capesante is a must try for any pasta lover, it was delicious! All around everyone enjoyed their meals with a consensus that a return visit is in order.Kudos to Tom our server, did an excellent job in tending to our needs! Absolutely amazing. Great atmosphere and amazing service. It was our last stop in town from a few day visit. The food was outstanding. The filet mignon was the best from any restaurant I've tried. Perfectly paired with the truffle potatoes. The view of the harbor from the private dining table was an added bonus.

Great food, great service. Celebrated our 10th anniversary, having dinner here for the first time. Great food: delicious truffle fries with 2 dips for starters; she enjoyed the spinach salad with salmon; I enjoyed The View Seafood Flambé with seasonal vegetables and coconut basmati rice. Great service: called at opening (4 PM) on Sunday, reserved a table for two at 6 PM; server received us immediately and seated us in a secluded corner table, but tended to us promptly and efficiently throughout the evening; made a recommendation for a flavourful local beer; notified that the dessert was on the house for our special occasion.

I only got to experience their parking lot and front greeter and I will never return. Parking lot is shared and is mostly paid. Paid $4 to go in, be told: - they are full - I can’t make a reservation - I can wait an hour at their door if I want but they can’t promise me there will even be a table if I wait - I can come back in an hour but anyone who came after me and before I return will be ahead in line - they told me they will not take my name. Really need to learn to say they are fully booked for the day. Maybe even at the street so people don’t waste money on parking.

We recently (party of 6) went to this establishment as i had never been. I beleive it is a new establishment so i am hoping that some of the little issues will be smoothed out with time. I had a caeser salad that was delish (capers, lardons, yum!) however i would NOT recommend adding a chicken breast to make it a meal as the cost to simply add a chicken breast was ABSURD (9X the cost) We actually planned to enjoy the sunny weather for the afternoon as the view is spectacular. That said we left immediately after eating as draught beverages are not available upstairs, only on the main floor. No bueno, so we went for afternoon drinks elsewhere and took our revenue with us which was a shame. The service was nothing memorable however i would remommend implementing some uniform standards as yoga pants & a t shirt seem to detract from the overall aesthetic. As mentioned, i believe there is so much unfulfilled potential here and i am hoping this establishment can iron out some of the kinks!!

The service here was bad; the waitress forgot our cutlery, messed up our order. We didn’t like the food either. As I wasn’t satisfied, I decided not to tip. And then some lady, probably manager, came to us and started being rude. She said we need to tip even tho we weren’t satisfied with the service. And then wanted us to feel bad and called our behavior rude. Baaad!

Service was extremely slow. Another table seated next to us waited almost 20 mins to have their drink order taken! Waited 80 min for our food. Food was cold and stale. Seemed like it was sitting under a heat lamp while the waiter “manager” was cooking table-side for another party. Bread basket was stale and appeared to be leftover bread thrown together on a plate. Steak was advertised as a 10oz AAA and was tough as nails! I do have to say the veggies alongside the meal were delicious, but at $32/plate you expect more than the side veggies to be enjoyable. We each took a few bites of our meal and decided to leave. While the manager did offer to replace the meal we decided to go elsewhere.

Had dinner here Friday night with my husband while visiting Nanaimo. We had prosciutto wrapped cod and salmon on mushroom ravioli with crispy brussel sprouts. Food was tasty but service was not great. Often searched for our server, no checking back or offering refills. Also, servers do not wear masks which made me very uncomfortable. I appreciate establishments that take the pandemic more seriously. Needs better trained staff or more servers.

Visited Top Notch Burger, Finally a good burger place in Nanaimo!!! Everything on their menu is so wonderful. The staff are very friendly The cooks are amazing at what they do I first discovered it a couple days ago, and I already had to go back and bring friends! All my friends loved it as well. Was fantastic, didn’t know what to expect initially. We ate here at night so we didn’t get the view but the decor and service was pretty good seems a touch outdated tho. Had to ask the server to light the candle for us initially in the beginning and again when it went out. Food wise though, man were from calgary and have had tried most of the steak houses and italian food there. This food was on a level of its own, but i’m glad girlfriend found it cause the experience is still very vivid in my head. scallop appetizer was fantastic, would’ve cooked it touch longer cause after the seared portion the inside was cool and almost raw like but the flavours were amazing. Girlfriend loved her mac and cheese, and i loved my seafood linguini. My only critique for it would be to lessen the amount of red peppers, might’ve been my fault that i didn’t mix everything together from the get go but as i got to the end the red peppers were just overpowering all the other notes in the dish. Red pepper party in the end, but the seafood was fresh and succulent! Prices are fair and i will come back here every time i come back to Nanaimo. Thanks guys was a pleasure!

Just back from date night at The View and it was AMAZING! Everything we had was so fresh and delicious. Started with the prawns gratin and the seafood chowder (best we have ever had!), followed by the halibut with mushroom risotto and bacon wrapped tenderloin (soooo tender!) and ended off with the most delicious raspberry lemon cheesecake! We had the pleasure of being served by the owner, Maddy, and the service was incredible. Definitely our favourite top-end restaurant in Nanaimo! We were so happy we booked our staff Christmas party for December!

Menu and food were excellent. I wanted to try everything. The seafood flambe is a dream. Prices are fair. The view itself of the backside of a marina is actually underwhelming. The the service was pleasant but spotty. Definitely worth a visit. Just be prepared to be patient with the young servers! :)

Great service from our server Hanna and everyone fuhing our visit to the roof top restaraunt. Large portions, tasty food, great atmosphere. We enjoyed a beautiful sunny May evening dining outside. Unlike some restaraunts these days we were not rushed or pressured to eat and leave and appreciated being able to enjoy a meal and drinks just like the pre covid days! We will definitely be visiting the roof top restaraunt for dinner again!

This was our second visit and it didn't disappoint. We did have the best server, his name is Kean and he is wonderful with all his customers. The food is outstanding we had the scallop appetizers and it was amazing! Best scallop ever! Also, my husband had the lamb and I had the salmon which were cooked to perfection. We shared a creme brûlée and we were so full after the 3 service. The decor of the restaurant is magical. I would recommend this place to anyone in Nanaimo. It is my favorite restaurant in the city. Some reviews say the portion are too small. This is a upscale restaurant that focus on local ingredients. Their portion are actually perfect and their food is fresh and encourage local market. We really enjoy our experience and we will be back again!! Of you want a romantic diner this is the place to go in town..

We had a great date night here last Tuesday ! Owner and staff are very accommodating especially if situation is discussed in advance. The food and drinks were very good and we enjoyed the fresh air and view on the patio. Our server was polite and knowledgable. I am a waitress myself so I know what good service is amd we weren't disappointed. We will return for future date nights :)

Excellent for a smaller town. The contrast of flavour was well thought out and beautifully executed. The host and service was excellent. The only downside was due to a decision to keep prices low. The main ingredient, the fish wasn't top tier quality, it was a little lacking in flavour but this was fully expected for this price point. Overall a 9 out of 10, but 10 out of 10 for value.

Four different experiences. We went there for my birthday, and my husband ordered flowers sent to the restaurant. For the first time since he’s been doing this (anywhere) the flowers weren’t anywhere to be seen at first glance. They were on a back table and not at a reserved table meant for us. He ordered a dish to be served at table and it was ok but not great... service was average not great Second my son and his girlfriend went there and was disappointed that the waitress not the chef did the at-table prep of his dinner, and they were out of the wine he ordered... Third experience. Our friends were there for dinner when the chef came out to visit with one of the customers in a very dirty apron. They thought if he was going to be in evidence he should have taken it off or switched to a clean one... Fourth experience. One of our friends went there with a gentleman friend and was horrified to find a groggy fly struggling in her salad... Needless to say there are 8 of us who won’t return. Too bad, as they started out well

the signage was not very good and we struggled to find the place. We kind of just stopped into this restaurant without knowing reservation are preferred but they were able to get the two of us in at a cute table by the window overlooking the waterfront. The service was great and made many stops to our table to check in on us. The food came out relatively quick and was amazing. We will definitely stop in again if we find ourselves in Nanaimo.

My wife and I had our first anniversary dinner at The View Oceanside Grill tonight and it was fabulous! Our server, Kean, was fun, attentive, and flambéd my wife’s seafood flambé at our table. We had calamari to start, seafood flambé and duck for mains, and the chocolate torte to finish. Everything was amazing and we would definitely return and recommend. Thanks for a brilliant dinner!

Great spot with a refreshing waterfront view to compliment the exquisite seafood. Good variety of meals and appetizers to pick from to while you enjoy your drink of choice, alcoholic or not. We were so excited to eat here as we have heard nothing but good about this beautiful restaurant. I think they were understaffed as we rarely saw our pleasant & personable server. She seemed to be run off her feet. There were 2 Men bussing tables I assume but neither of them offered to top up our glasses. We were there for nearly 3 hours, the last 45 minutes with empty glasses waiting for our bills. I had spinach salad which is a favorite but not this one. It had no discernible flavor other than mildly burnt. So many odd additions in it like dates & pumpkin seeds. Seriously the most unpleasant spinach salad ever. I also had the scallops. Basically covered in Cajun seasoning & over cooked. Ruining the delicate flavor. There was a lot of add-ons to this as well like chopped mangoes hiding the 4 or 5 tiny scallops. My friend had the lobster platter expecting Atlantic lobster not crayfish or rock lobster. Seriously overpriced! Our other diner had Halibut with risotto which was delicious & easily the best meal of the 3 of us. Definitely a let down for us. Not likely to return .

The view Oceanside Grill is our number 1 go to for an amazing fine dining experience. Most things are gluten free which is a huge bonus for me and I have probably tried every dish on the menu and not 1 of them I haven't loved. The staff are amazing and there different creme brules that change weekly are to die for !

I have to agree with many of the other reviews here: great food, and great service - a memorable dinner. Dinner for two here Monday 8 Feb 2021. The lamb sirloin and the beef ribs were just perfect, and the accompanying mash and grilled veg also hit the spot. Overall a very enjoyable evening and definitely worth a second visit.

Amazing food and atmosphere! We came in late in the afternoon and were still warmly served. The chef’s seafood chowder is one of the best ones I’ve ever had. The steak sandwich was done perfectly and the sauce is so good. I ordered a side of garden salad and was amazed by its dressing. I will definitely come again to try the dinner menu next time when I go to Nanaimo.

Attended this place on July 2 , ordered short ribs and this arrived with very dried out ribs, luke warm, potatoes appeared to be instant, coffee luke warm and a blackisk type of gravy and mushrooms. A very disappointed meal Prices very high with 9 oz wine being 19.00. . All I want is a tasty hot meal and good service . Do not understand why restaurants cannot seem to deliver good tasting , hot meals.

Ordered for pick up through uber eats. I'm usually pretty hesitant for where I order on uber eats so I read reviews first. Pictures looked pretty good, reviews seemed pretty good. Unfortunately not sure what happened with my food. I got the braised short rib, and although super tender, it really felt like no effort was made. My food was cold. Doesnt seem at all that there was any effort for it to be atleast warm. The taste was... bearable. Vegetables looked so sad. The best part was the guy in front who gave me my order. He was nice. Probably wouldnt recommend this place on this experience though.

I had lunch here today, the seafood chowder is the best I've had so far. Many restaurants have the chowder but nothing compares to The Views. My ceasar salad was good and service excellent. Everything on the menu sounded tempting and it's for sure I will return to try some of them in the near future. Good luck to the new young couple who have bought this restaurant, I am sure they will do very well.

We have been to this location 4 times, twice when it was Beach Fires Pacific Grill and twice as The View. We have always raved about the food and have typically had good service. However, on this occasion the service was lacking. Our waitress was very nice but couldn't answer simple questions regarding what types of beer were available, what the seasonal vegetables were and after checking our bills before giving them to us got them mixed up (we were 2 couples). She also mixed up the wine order. This after just reading some reviews with the same complaint re the bar order. The food was also very slow in arriving with the explanation that you have a small kitchen. However, as soon as we inquired about it, it miraculously appeared at the table. A customer does not want to hear the words, "I don't know"; "I'll have to check on that for you"; "I'll have to send the bartender over". Both couples were very disappointed and have decided not to return. I would give 5 stars for the food but service is a very important part of the experience.

First time trying the view was our anniversary. Our service to start was great. Drinks were ordered and came promptly but then we did not see our waiter for 40 minutes. Appetizers were ok scallops were cold. My beef tenderloin was hugely disappointing. The beef was tasteless and the spaetzle was fried and salty. The add on oscar was way to salty. Totally amateur, pretentious and poorly executed. The server discouraged me from getting the calamari, saying it was "done differently," which I assumed to mean on the grill and olive oil, which is traditionally how squid is made. Nope, it was just thick and deep fried and flavorless. They have no pan fried fish, no trout, it's all the typical "soft" fish, for some reason these West coast chefs thinking that undercooking the fish is the same thing as not overcooking it. Again, no flavour, and it didn't flow with the capers, which were not crushed but sprinkled on like pepper, meaning without any sauce, just gathered at the sides of the plate.

Pricy for the quality. Had the scallops and bread basket to start. Cucumber water was refreshing! Glass of wine, paired with seafood mac and cheese. Cheese sauce was rather runny. Good quality seafood platter for the most part; Crab was great, lobster was a bit overcooked. Mussels were delicious as were the shrimp. Lemon raspberry cheesecake was tasty, coffee was horrendous and got weird looks from the server when stated. Not bad but overpriced for what was offered.

Moored in one of the marinas meant only a strolls distance from our boat. Enjoyed a pleasent enough evening on thier veranda while waiting for the restaurant cook staff to show up to work. ???? I wouldn't say the food was memorable, but the setting allowed us to relax.

We got our food after 50 minutes of waiting because of a mixup. The waitress offered us free deserts. We accepted and asked for the lemon pies. The waitress came back saying they were out of lemon pie,that we could have the cheesecake instead, but just 1 pie for the two of us since they are 8 dollars. That was a weird experience for us. The pasta tasted good though.

Very quick service, food and drinks came really fast but there was something about my food that didn't taste actually fresh, like it was pre cooked or frozen, I am not sure if I would say it was actually a risotto. Presentation was good though. Drinks came in different ways the two times it was requested the same (first was light and second, super strong). Overall it was all fine.

If you haven’t been to this new restaurant I highly recommend you try it out! This place offers phenomenal views of the waterfront, often with otters and seals coming up to play. The food is spectacular, great portions for price and the chef obviously puts a lot of heart into the meals he creates. Service is great and very attentive. The food is really delicious and all items on the menu sound really interesting and enticing. I had to take a star away because the service in the dining room was not good. Once we moved to the rooftop patio and got a new server it was much better. Also, parking was a bit of a nightmare. I had to leave our table to feed the meter or hopefully find a restaurant spot (those are free if you can get one) Overall, I will recommend and be back!

Having had excellent meals at The View at both the current and previous locations, we decided to try it at a third location for my Covid year birthday - our home! Last night we ordered take out for two and just as always, it was outstanding! For appies - Seafood Chowder and Sweet&Spicy Scallops - both awesome, and for the mains - Sesame Seared Tuna and Blackened Trout- both fantastic! My birthday “cake” was the delicious Chocolate Torte. Our home plating wasn’t quite as beautiful, but the food itself was wonderful. Thank you!

My boyfriend and I’s first time dining here! We heard of good reviews from trusted sources and looked up reviews online and decided to finally try this chic restaurant! Compliments to kitchen on flavours and execution of dishes..delicious food. The tuna pole starter was AMAZING! My boyfriend ribeye was cooked to perfection! My seafood platter was also to die for! But...ya but..really long waits for our orders and service lacked warmth..And unfortunately, we had a crew of very loud and crude housewives behind us, who clearly had way too much to drink and we’re airing out ALL their dirty laundry, literally, like..diarrhea talk..at full volume. Appetizing!..I’m sure the tables at the other end of the patio were disturbed too..It made for an unpleasant experience for us. I wish staff could have said something to this group..they were clearly Very disruptive and inconsiderate of others dining experience. I guess my partner and I weren’t vocal enough but it was pretty clear they were making for a bad experience. Once we got the bill, we practically ran out, just to get away from those horrible people. We told our waitress as we paid our bill and she really had nothing to say...an apology would go a long way, considering your staff aren’t willing to deal with obnoxious guests..

If you want to go to a place where you're treated like royalty, I'd recommend going to The View Oceanside Grill in Nanaimo. I had the Seafood Flambe and it was fabulous and as it was done at our table it was also entertaining to the grandkids. My husband had Short Ribs and he didn't need a knife-- so tender. The Veggies were grilled perfectly.

We arrived half hour before opening and had excellent beers at the Top Notch Burgers that greatfully served us as they were awaiting The View to open. Our visit was at 4 pm on a Tuesday and we had the place to ourselves. We had an excellent dish each and the waitress was top notch. PEPPERCORN BEEF FARFALLE and RED THAI COCONUT CURRY were both to die for and not the usual flavours of a regular restaurant. Will be returning to try out the other extraordinary meals on their menu very soon!

This restaurant exceeded all my expectations. Food was superb, service was excellent, and the atmosphere was lovely. Our server Rebekah was personable and attentive. Even though it was a Tuesday night, they were very busy and there was a wait to get in. Food also took some time to come out but it's not a problem for us at all. Just meant more time to enjoy our dinner! HIGHLY recommend - sesame crusted tuna - 2 big slabs of tuna cooked to perfection. The salad was fresh, and the rice was aromatic with coconut $24 - MUST try the Oscar add-on to any entree! (cream sauce shrimp, scallops and crab) it was extremely creamy, flavourful, and an excellent addition to rice. $9 - crispy skin salmon Oscar - this one is great because it already comes with the Oscar ($9 a la carte). The salmon was tender and wasn't overcooked, which is very rare Thank you for the pleasant experience and would definitely be back if in town again :)

We think the mussels/clams appetizer is a 5 star dish, the salads are average, and the seafood macaroni could be a 4/5 stars if it wasn’t so salty even for my salt loving husband (was told that no salt was added to the dish…). Outstanding service, delicious varied menu! We were passing through and wanted a cozy meal on the waterfront. This gem did not disappoint.
