Service was excellent, food was even better. If you're looking for a great Daal, this is the place to go. But then again, I had amazing coconut Thai pasta. The menu has a large variety. A place I would recommend to everyone - hands down! Special mention to the chef, Kellie.

Fantastic food and a great atmosphere. The servers are friendly, helpful and do an outstanding job. My wife had the tacos and said they were some of the best she ever had. I had the beef burger and it was amazing. Will definitely eat here again.

What an amazing experience dining here. The passion and hospitality of the owner, Gaetan shines through in how this great restaurant runs. Jennifer, The manager, took excellent care of us all night long. We turned our experience over to her expertise and she guided us though an excellent culinary experience accompanied with outstanding cocktails and wines. The kitchen is clearly very talented and creative with some great fusion dishes. We felt very privileged to be able to eat here. The Sunday happy hour deal was unbelievably good. Go on a Sunday Or weekday when it is less busy and support a great local business!

Our first date night in months and we couldn't have chosen a better spot! Jared was amazing, very friendly, knowledgeable and passionate about food and beverages.. He gave beautiful recommendations and excellent pairings for us. Ambience was lovely. The menu is exciting, it's unique and there are ample opportunities for surprise, if you're an adventurous eater. The mussels were perfection and the fries were beyond.. Cannot recommend enough. Looking forward to coming back and trying the rest of the menu!

First off love the decor it is funky and wonderful. The restaurant is cozy and the mood inviting. The menu is well consideredand provides sufficient choice to satisfy anyone. This is my third time at Melange and, as always, I left feeling completely satiated. The music is just right, the service is friendly and professional and the food is more than 5 stars. The jerk chicken spring rolls are the best we have had...ever! I never eat fries but I am compelled to buy the Korean chilli flake fries with beet root purée every time. They melt in my mouth! From the oysters to the tacos, it’s a surprise brew each visit. I honestly don’t think we can say enough good about dining here. It’s our go to restaurant to treat ourselves. Thank you Melange

One of the best tasting foods in the city. It is heaven for the vegan. The sight of the old heritage building, by the corner of the street feels surreal. Our server, Jennifer, was the most amiable lady who took care that our food was as we had described. They’re following all protocols and are still able to manage the hospitality of the before corona times. All I could see around me, were happy faces. One of the most special experiences.

I don't understand the great reviews, honestly. Decor was great, service was commendable for offering to compensate us for our disappointment, but the food was really average. My cassoulet tasted like Libby's brown beans mixed with pulled pork. 2 small pieces of sausage and 1 chunk of mutton. Very disappointing. $10 for 2 spring rolls that were just ok. Mussels were fresh but were in a sea of oil. Maybe we were unlucky with our food choices but certainly was not a 4.8 rating experience.

So good! Just enough humor to remind me not to tale myself so seriously. Food was excellent... absolutely superb. Brilliant Westcoast Salish art on the walls. Slightly smaller portion sizes, but priced fairly and those flavors easily make up for it. It just means you cam have more! Topped off with a lovely server who was professional yet friendly... well, it was worth the wait. I won't wait long to go back though!

I have been to Melange for lunch, happy hour and dinner, and it has been great each time. The menu is varied and tempting with small plates such as beet risotto, pulled pork spring rolls and the best vegan fries and spicy “catch-up” you will ever find. There are great salads and many vegan options as well as fish and meat choices. The wine list is terrific, the ambience is pleasant and the service is friendly and efficient. You can’t go wrong at Melange!

We took a quick trip to Vancouver Island - first time away since the virus hit. We had time for dinner before the ferry and were surprised that so many restaurants in Nanaimo were closed - at least partially because there are so few visitors. How fortunate we were that Melange was open. Our dining experience far exceeded our expectations. The menu was varied and eclectic and made ample use of local ingredients. We enjoyed everything. And we had our two pups with us, and the staff was so helpful in finding a table that worked for all of us. Next time we're in Nanaimo, we won't need to look around, we'll know where we're going to eat!

OMG.. This is a great restaurant in the heart of DT Nanaimo. For 2 hours I felt like I was in Montreal or Toronto... The food was extremely good. I would Highly recommend. Make reservations in advance. A member of our group was VEGAN and he loved it as did I, as an omnivore. The Mussels were to die for, the Vegan board was amazing, as was the seared sturgeon. I had the beef burger with Brie for my main course and I LOVED IT. This restaurant did not disappoint, and I will definitely be back. Great Job to the Chef and Melange Team !!!!

Took a trip to Vancouver island and found this restaurant. It's located in the perfect spot in downtown Nanaimo close to the harbour. The food was great! Our server was very friendly and made us feel welcome. If you're ever in Nanaimo I recommend this place :)

Food was tasty, and prepared quickly, which was great because we were really hungry! We got the Pork Lo Mein, and the Cassoulet dishes, but we were disappointed with the portion sizes as we were left hungry. My partner was not overly impressed with the Lo Mein, there was not enough veggies, just a ton of corn and onions and the taste didn’t feel special - kinda like instant noodles. I also feel like the Cassoulet dish should be served with bread to mop up the sauce, and served with more meat rather than just one bone! Our drinks were quite good.

No doubt the food was delicious here. Food did take a bit of time, but well done. There was really not much to complain about here. Flavourful, not too salty or greasy. I would highlight one mystery appetizer (it's the "yuk", you get what the chef decides) we ordered. It involved pork belly. And I mean belly with what appeared to be 80-90% fat. Prepare to be grossed out? Not in the least! Oh imagine those pieces almost just melting in your mouth but somehow not feeling fatty or greasy at all. How do they do that??? Might be the most amazing pork belly I've had anywhere. The portion sizes are right for a meal, I think the only complaint we had was pricing is a bit on the higher side (nearly everything is supposed to be local, in season) and slightly slow (hey, prepared fresh and with care?). You should try this one, it is recommended.

Delicious food and impeccable service. The menu and presentation are executed with top notch creativity. ‘Mysterious’ menu items like the third dessert make for a unique experience. I ordered the third dessert and asked if it could be made vegan; the chef went above and beyond and combined fig with marzipan and Italian ice - never seen anything like it before. Also great patio seating for the covid-wary. Definitely check this place out!

This is the second time we visited Melange. As usual the best restaurant and food in Downtown Nanaimo (BC). Restaurant is located right in the heart of Nanaimo Downtown. We were greeted by the owner and he walked us to our table. Mia was the waitress for our table. It was nice chatting with Mia. She had knowledge about cuisines around the world. She also told us the origin of the 'Kir Royale' cocktail. The cocktail itself was interesting. I ordered an 'Old Fashioned' and later a 'Whiskey Sour'. Both the cocktails were up to the mark. We ordered 'Mumbai Street Food', Vegan Pasta, Vegan Lo Mein. Mumbai Street Food - One of the Best Bhel I have had outside Inside. Vegan Pasta - Brilliant flavors, beautiful texture of the Puttanesca. I loved it. Vegan Lo Mein - Was not a big fan only because there was a lot going on in the plate. I strongly think Carrots were redundant in the dish. I love the Ambience of the Restaurant. However, I suggest, in the far left dining area, please move the boxes of supplies to a storage room. They should not be visible to a customer. Overall, I strongly recommend trying out Melange. Delicious food that is on par with restaurants that charge three times it’s price. Probably the best bang for your buck restaurant you could ever go too. The flavours in each dish were unique, nuanced, and married perfectly with each other. The servers were attentive and the owner in particular was amazingly friendly and welcoming. This restaurant is in a tier of its own.

The chacuterie platter was delicious and I loved the attention to detail. For the main meal, it came around 5 minutes after we finished our platter, we could have used a bit more time to digest! The waiter was new and very inexperienced. He had trouble explaining the menu choices, then brought tea and milk on a tray which he dropped spilling the milk everywhere. Then when we were to pay the bill he got our bills mixed up and we didn't notice until we got home. Nice enough young man but didn't seem to have had any training. Very disappointed.

We recently dined at Melange for the first time and were it not for the outstanding manner of the server Dominique I’d not return. The YUK appetizer had tasty sautéed artichoke and delicious chanterelles although served on a rather soupy pilaf. I chose the special entree of the day which was veggies in curry sauce with a filet of sturgeon (which unfortunately had the smell of old fish and was cooked dry. The server wished I’d reported it to her at the time ((Only tonite looking at the receipt do I realize that the server gave it to me as a promo.! Thank you!!)) Bartender paired the fish beautifully with St-Urbans Riesling (although like the wine with the Amalaya Malbec, the nose had distinct dish detergent aroma masking any nose of the wine; however the server did not smell it.). The Riesling was an excellent pair (although I had to ask five minutes after the entrée was served that I had not yet received the wine) Chef Kellie was not on duty that night. Next time we will go back and have a number of appetizers to get the “lay of the land”. Guaytan I believe you are well-meaning. Keep up with your cuisine art!

We met up with a couple of old friends to try out MeLange. It was a fantastic experience with excellent service and delicious food. The menu is creative and slightly elevated, but still in a reasonable price-point. There were also numerous vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Our group tried different things—the ribeye, pulled pork spring rolls, Gabriola beef burger, fries, and veggie ramen-style noodles—and we all agreed that we would gladly come again. This restaurant is a welcome addition to downtown Nanaimo!

We were looking for a place to have a nice glass of wine with some choice and good ambiance. We found it immediately at this restaurant. The wine selection was excellent including the ability to order a 2oz size for tasting or pairing. We ordered a variety of appetizers and they were excellent including the mysterious Yuk. Excellent vegan and vegetarian options. A professional service oriented business, where you can hear each other speak and have a real conversation.

Amazing, thoughtfully curated menu. Creatively crafted culinary experience resulting in multiple foodgasms! To top it off the music beautifully complimented the experience. Friendly and relaxed ambiance and staff, great for a unique night out that instantly transports your senses and brings them alive at the same time. We tried several appetizers, and one after the other was over the top and definitely did not disappoint! Be adventurous and try a bit of whatever catches your attention and piques your curiousity. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch January 23rd, 2020. I had the Hearty Green Salad. Loved it. My friend had a fish dish. She said it was very good. It looked very sparce with only the fish on the plate but she said it was filling and very good. Our neighbours had burgers that looked plentiful and delicious. The wine sizes are very different. 2 oz. and 5 oz. I asked for a house white wine and they said they didn't really have a house wine. I ordered the first one on the menu, 2 oz. It was really, really nice. The reason they serve 2 oz. instead of 3, according to staff is that the wine is expensive and top of the line so to make it affordable they offer it in smaller sizes. The owner is a very pleasant, friendly person. He made us feel very welome! I hope to return.

All the other great reviews really hold true! We tried melange yesterday for the first time. We had such a friendly, enthusiastic server who was eager to tell us all about the tapas and cocktails and recommended things we should try. The experience, food, cocktails and service was all on par with dining experiences we had had when we lived or visited big cities. Will definitely be going back and bringing people!

Update : 1 star for the pathetic owner's response. Pretty overhyped. Overpriced for what was served. Came for lunch and had the Indian street food appy, Thai rice balls appy, raw oysters (way above market price), seared Tuna, the French rice dish with duck, and the best thing we had was the one we let the kitchen make up on the fly. I think it's good for a small town, but hard not to compare to places like Mackenzie Room in Vancouver. Service staff just wore mouth guards, not masks. Would not recommend.

On a double date night, Melange was a last resort because we'd never tried it. Let me tell you, it was the best direction we were pushed in and would definitely go back. To start, I had ordered the soft taco. I was a little disappointed. The food was rather flavourless but the presentation was beautiful. I thought that this was going to set the mood for the whole evening. For a main, I ordered the Gabriola Beef Burger with fries. I hate beef burgers normally, but have come to order this on every menu. Mainly because beef is hard to season and easy to over cook. If I don't like the burger, I won't come back. The fries were very well seasoned. They were nice and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside - cooked to perfection. The burger - WOW! I'm the first to complain about the lack of sauce on a burger. This burger didn't have much sauce but it didn't need it, at all. The beef was well cooked and very well seasoned. I haven't had a burger like that since Vegas! The desert - well, that was something else. Each mouthful tickled my taste buds. If you're looking for somewhere nice to go for dinner, this is a great choice!

We visited from bowen island and were honestly not originally planning on eating here, by chance our original restaurant was full. Truth be told this was a amazing dining experience, our server (Amanda) was beyond helpful and always attentive, and the food was on par with some of the top restaurants in Vancouver. Had been wanting to try this place for a while! Our server was so lovely. Me and my partner split some vegetarian dishes, the ramen and the pasta. The pasta was interesting but very good with the nuts, my partner liked it more, I thought the ramen broth was stupid good especially. Creative, locally-sourced menu that both challenges and satisfies the palate for a very reasonable price. Captivating cocktail and wine menu as well. Greatly enjoyed the “Yuk” and dessert challenge-the-chef menu items. We were especially impressed that they could be tailored for a vegan diet, as those kind of experiences are often limited to those without dietary restrictions. We would second the feedback that a cashew cheese for the vegan “bored” would be the cherry on top!

An amazing selection of food, with suprise chef specials if you feel brave enough to order them (highly suggested, everything was AMAZING) all from local farmed fresh sources. The cocktail menu is divine with special drinks, with a wide variety of wine from all over the world, perfect for any meal pairing. Simply delightful! First time there and received such a warm welcome by our server and owner. Food was superb (generous portions), so beautifully presented, lovely selection of wine, and I had the 'surprise dessert' - yum, yum - highly recommend trying that. If you haven’t dropped into Melange yet, what are you waiting for? Relatively new and making a splash on the block near the top of Commercial when Covid arrived, the restaurant is open again and as good as ever. For now a small, but interesting, menu, offers well crafted, well presented and well delivered dishes. Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, just an all-round good dining experience.
