Been here before, great food and service so decided to go again with the family to celebrate a special day for us. All was going well until we wanted to order wine. My wife and I like wine and since it was a special occasion, we decided to order a bottle. I don't remember the names, but we ask if we could sample one or two to decide (one bottle was around $50 and the other $80). When the server came back, she said that they don't have any sampling bottles for those wines, which I was fine with, but offered us a sample of something else instead, one of their cheaper by the glass selections. We sampled it and it was not good at all so we simply asked for one of the $50 something bottles and said we would risk it and laughed it off. Next comes someone else, maybe a manager or something, and offers us another sample - what? - and suggests we consider the house red instead of our $50 something choice. My wife and I look at each other, not knowing what's going on...and then it dawned on me. Anyway, we ask if we could have the bottle we asked for and she said it was ok for us to have it, great. She asked if we wanted to keep the sample of house wine as well, I thought that was a nice touch ;). We get our bottle, start enjoying ourselves and ignoring what just happened but the staff had other plans. We were asked five times of we liked the wine. Five. So this is what I think was happening. I am a POC, my wife is not (Scandinavian roots), so I’m pretty sure that the staff thought they would have a fuss over an expensive bottle of wine because someone like me wouldn’t like/appreciate it and may decide not to pay for it so it’s easier to get them to buy something cheaper since they’re more likely not even care either way. If that isn’t what was happening, then they simply made a family uncomfortable doing a very simple thing: order a bottle of wine for dinner. The food is good but dining out is more than good food – dignity and respect should also be a part of it.

My wife and I have eaten at La Stella twice now, once dining-in pre-COVID and once dining-out post-COVID. The food is soooooo good! We love the Kale Caesar salad and every pizza we've tried on the menu. The service is great too. This will definitely be a place to bring the fam when they come to visit!

The food just isn't very good. I couldn't decide what to order at first, but after seeing an order of meatballs that was sent to another table as an appetizer, I decided I'd have the spaghetti and meatballs. It took about four minutes between placing my order and receiving my meal. The dish I had ordered clearly wasn't made for me. It gives the impression that they are premade and quickly thrown together when ordered. Portion size was tiny, and I mean TINY! The meatballs were a fraction of the size that I had seen being served to another table as an appetizer. This dish is immensely overpriced at nineteen dollars. The sauce seemed cheap and was too spicy. Spaghetti sauce shouldn't be the slightest bit spicy. Period. The waitress came around to ask how it was, but I had to be honest. I had to return the dish and ordered a pizza instead, which wasn't any better. The dough is fine around the parimeter of the pizza (crust) but the center of the dough is lazer thin and completely doughy. The center of the pizza is a soupy, gooey mess and the pepperoni on it were cooked to a crisp. The sauce seemed to be the exact same sauce from the spaghetti. Pizza sauce shouldn't be the slightest bit spicy either. Period. The overall flavor and quality of the two dishes I tried here were abysmal. The waitress was very polite and seemed like a wonderful person. I was happy to give her a 100% tip as she was definitely the best part of my visit. The beer was good too. The place is nice inside and has a good atmosphere. Everyone inside seemed happy and there is definitely a good vibe in this place. In conclusion, the food just wasn't very good. I can make better food at home. I will continue my search for a truly great Italian restaurant in Nanaimo.

Our favourite restaurant in Nanaimo. Everything is great - wood fired oven pizza and pasta dishes made with pasta they hand make in the restaurant. Service is friendly, prices are reasonable and they have an extensive drink menu. With the pandemic we only dine outdoors, Stella has quite a few outdoor tables. We have also ordered from their provisions menu, which you can have delivered or pick up from the restaurant. The pasta and pizza dough provisions are particularly good.

Tried the wood fired pizza.. it was delicious! The house made pepperoni was fantastic and fairly priced. The service was great too. All of the servers were friendly and on top of things, explained the menu very well. 10/10 would return again.

On occasion my partner and I contemplate going to other establishments in Nanaimo but based on many mixed bag experiences, we always end up at either La Stella or it's sister restaurant Hilltop Bistro. Friendly service, neat ambience and always amazing food. Never disappointed. An honour to have these options.

Ordered the risotto which was so oily I couldn’t eat it, so I sent it back and ordered a pizza which was rather dry and the crust was burnt. Not a great experience. Others I dined with experienced similar meals. . Overall, not a good evening. Good service and good covid standard. .

A wonderful dining experience. Fresh, high end weekend brunch and excellent service. I would have the Salmon Lox Benedict again. Also sampled a side of Gnocchi Hash browns, which were delicious, but probably more food than I needed. The price tag on the meal for two was a bit high, but you get what you pay for!

Had a very lovely dinner at this establishment last night. Our waitress was kind enough to serve us a little earlier than our reservation, she told us the specials which sounded great and we ordered one of the pizzas. It was an early birthday celebration for me and I love Italian food. I’m also from Toronto so it was important to find something nice and yummy for me while I was away. I chose to dine on the island because my sister and her family live there and wanted to celebrate with us as well. We had a lovely meal; pasta, pizza, wine! If it weren’t for the ferry we had to catch we would have surely enjoyed dessert! It was a lovely spot to enjoy a little birthday celebration and great food.

Only reviewing because I received three emails nagging me to do so. Additionally, I am pretty easy to please. Normally I love La Stella, so I am sad to write this review and hope that it is a one-off experience. Our table wasn't ready at our time of reservation, it was sitting there empty and ready, it just took fifteen minutes to set the table and seat us. There were two groups standing in the middle of the restaurant waiting for seats (it's small - there's nowhere to stand). Service was poor - we take a long time to decide what to order usually and we had already decided on our food before our server was around to take the drink order, and the water she brought was warm, and never got refilled throughout the meal. There were some recipe changes since the last time we were there - arancini cheese balls have changed for the worse, kale caesar salad had twice as much dressing as it should have (and like three croutons, no parm. it was pretty much just kale and dressing). The breadsticks were amazing, though! The pizza menu has also changed for the worse. Ordered four pizzas. Two sweet and spicy pepperoni. One was crispy and perfect, the other one was a soupy, oily (like dripping) mess. Blanca pizza was ok, also pretty oily. The Mortadella pizza we had was good.

Wonderful food, tons of parmesan cheese on top of everything. Our server was lovely, the food came quickly and was delicious. We had wine as well which was amazing. Cannoli for dessert to wrap it all up and it was a great experience that we will definitely be back for.

Came here for a friend's birthday dinner, part of the table shared 5 pizzas and we ordered a pizza with gnocchi to share. The ambiance is nice with attentive and friendly service. My friend who also got a pasta agreed that they were fairly small in portion. The gnocchi was soft and pillowy which paired wonderfully with the tangy beef ragu filled with tender beef. I found it a bit rich after eating about 8 of the gnocchi. The crunch on top and generous cheese definitely elevated the experience. We also had the Calabrese pizza, to which I enjoyed the crust where it was thicker (amazing dipped in the gnocchi sauce), but the middle with toppings was too thin and salty for my liking. Overall it was a pleasant experience but the food was a bit lackluster.

I went for dinner to La Stella Trattoria with friends last Friday and enjoyed the ambiance, the friendly attentive service, the wine and...OMG, the food!! We shared the Arancini and Meatballs for appies, two different thin crust pizzas (scrumptious) from the beautiful wood fire oven, Gnocchi w/Beef Ragu - best I've ever had, then finished with Tiramisu for dessert. It was truly an excellent experience! I LOVED watching the pizza being created right before my eyes. I shall return for the duck...I hear it's fabulous! Fresh ingredients, local suppliers, home made everything...HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Fresh fresh fresh - the menu changes regularly to what's in season. I've never enjoyed a tastier salad, and the pizza was fantastic. We added arugula to the mushroom pizza, and were thrilled with a crunchy layer of green. Can't wait to go back!

Service was good, limited wine selection but the chianti we had was nice and reasonably priced. The food, however, was crazy salty. Couldn't finish my dish - had the kale risotto which tasted only of very salty cheese. Hubs had the lamb pasta dish which was also salty but at least had some mint and peas to break up the flavour. May go back to try the pizza.

The decor has an open modern open Italian feel to the and you can see the water from the windows.The menu choices are mix of pizza and pasta. In some cases they put a modern twist. We had the brushetta which was like having a caprese salad on top of thick piece of focaccia bread. For our main course we chose the more traditional pizza. Cheese and Mushroom. These were well made traditional Neapolitan pizzas cooked in a wood fired oven. They were wonderful, the base tasted like fluffy based and not too heavy on the toppings

Delicious food, nice ambience. Went with some friends a few nights ago and we all shared 3 courses... would recommend the carpaccio appetizer as well as the flourless chocolate cake for dessert! Their house red wine was also quite nice and dry, paired well with all the food :) only downside are the hours! Wish it was a little more ‘European’ and stayed open later.

So we have been here twice. The service is excellent!! The pasta is the best I've ever had and my hubs said the pizza is second on to a place in Germany. Everything is large fresh and so soooooooooo good! Clean tables/bathrooms Lovely place, cannot wait to go back!

Ordered a couple pizzas for take out, and very impressed! It can be hard to find restaurants in Nanaimo that either aren’t chains and or carry quality food. The pizzas had the perfect authentic wood stove taste I was looking for! Staff was friendly and efficient. Love that they support local and organic ingredients as well. We will most certainly be back!

Best restaurant I've tried in Nanaimo! Everything we had was delicious - the beef carpaccio and baby kale Caesar were highlights, though. The little homemade chips and the piles of fresh grated parmesan and arugula on the carpaccio were all perfection, and the salad was overflowing from the bowl with delicious dressing and more parmesan! Also I have to mention the service - I haven't had such excellent service for a long time. Our server was there whenever we needed her but was never overbearing. You could tell they are a real team, too - everyone was watching out for our table, bringing food, clearing dishes and filling our water whenever we needed. Oh and finally - atmosphere. Loved it. Felt cozy but not crowded, could hear music and soft chatter from other tables, but it still quiet enough for us to easily have a conversation. New favourite restaurant for sure!

This was our first time at this wonderful Italian Restauraunt. The decor was warm and inviting with a wood burning pizza oven and space at the bar who like to watch their puzza being prepared. The menu included a variety of Italian dishes . Ingredients are locally sourced at organic farms etc as much as possible. We ordered the puzza but after viewing the other dishes going by we will definitely sample something else next time. When the individual pizzas arrived we just gaped. The crust was relatively thin and truly the tastiest puzza crust I have ever had. The homemade sauce was delicious

We started with the meatballs and it was delicious, after the meatballs we shared the Tortelli and the feature pizza which was a pepperoni and bacon pizza. Both the Tortelli and pizza were amazing, we finished off with the chocolate cake and gelato! We will be back soon!

Great food and excellent service. I love the fact they try to locally source as much ingredients as possible as well as offer local beers and wines. The food was full of flavour and clearly homemade. The service was great too, there was never a moment we didn't feel taken care of. To top off all that, I feel the prices were very reasonable considering the high quality of food and drinks! I stumbled upon this place and made a clear note of where it was to go back again. The food was amazing. Good portion sizes, very fresh, well seasoned ... no complaints to make! The missing star might well just be an unfortunate day rather than the norm. One of the staff came across as being distant/not very interested. Maybe they were having a very bad day and are normally exceptional. I am not sure, but I hope to find out on my next visit.

La Stella Trattoria is one of the finest restaurants in Nanaimo and my personal favourite. The staff are friendly and well trained, our server was a gem. They had a great wine selection within an agreeable range of prices. The meal quality and quantity were perfectly balanced. Even though they specialize in pasta, pizza and other staples of Italian food, you never feel heavy after the meal. Great place to take a date and it will not cost you an arm and a leg, unless you want it to. The meals are delicious and the restaurant has an attractive aesthetic and food presentation, what more can you ask for. I look forward to going again.

The food was really good, so much so that we didn't mind that the description on the menu was not representative of what we got. I think they are going through a menu change though. We ordered the Mortadello pizza which unexpectedly came covered with some kind of pickled peppers then we had the cannoli for desert which was supposed to be dipped in chocolate but were not. Still tasty though and the atmosphere was nice, relaxing and quiet.

This is our go to "dinner out" place in Nanaimo. Their wood fired pizza is one of the best I've ever had and I recommend the beef ragu gnocchi. Their family style dinner serve is brilliant for larger groups, especially if you like a little bit of everything. During the pandemic restrictions La Stella quickly adapted and began providing weekly take out and delivery menus and partnered with other local businesses to offer more and support fellow entrepreneurs. It was a brilliant move and allowed patrons to have a bit of a break, and treat ourselves to a modified normalcy while maintaining high quality food and service. I'm excited for the reopening and look forward to visiting again soon !

We popped in on the off chance we could get a table for four on a Saturday night and after a short wait we were seated. We had a lovely meal starting with the insalata primavera and the prawns. For mains we had the meatballs and spaghetti (spicy, tasty although a bit salty), gnocchi with beef ragu (rich and tasty), bolognese and the rigatoni (both delicious) with the greens salad as a side to share. We followed this with dessert cannoli, sorbet and pannacotta - all really delicious and not too sweet or rich which was great. The service was fantastic. Our waitress Mercede was brilliant!!

The food was good but I ended up getting sick after... I was with my work group so we ordered multiple courses and at the end of it I was in the washroom with major pains and then had to leave. We were there for a while so I know it was from the food. I understand there's a wood fired oven, but I was sweating in my seat. Too bad. Not sure if I'll go back. We heard the pizza was good so gave it a try. The pizza is absolutely delicious. We had the funghi pizza which had lots of mushrooms and arugula. It is easily the best pizza we’ve had on the island and fares well against some of the better Vancouver pizza places. Our second dish was the gnocchi w beef ragu. It was melt in your mouth delicious! Had the whole family, mom, dad, and the five girls (5-13). The staff was very happy to assist with our large party and with mom's dietary restrictions (gluten free and dairy free). The food was amazing and many "Mmmmmm" s were heard through out the meal. This will rank as one of our best meals as a family, ever. So glad that we found this spot on our return from Parksville headed back to Victoria during our vacation. If we are back in the Nanaimo area, we will definitely be back.

First time trying this restaurant. Saw the sandwich board on fitzwilliam st which caught my attention. I ordered the rigatoni and it was 5 star in taste. The portion size was less than desirable. I could have used a third more to make a meal of it. Had to order and pay for bread to offset the portion size. The service was excellent. Portion size of this dish needs to increase to create value for the $18 price point.

After dining here on several occasions, I can say with confidence that this is a superb restaurant, as measured by: food quality, attentiveness and friendliness of service staff, and overall ambiance. La Stella Trattoria is another culinary gem from Chef Ryan Zuvich, of The Hilltop Bistro. Make reservations. This is too good a place to be disappointed. Located in the Old City Quarter of Nanaimo, this lovely restaurant creates Italian gastronomic masterpieces from scratch. Ottawa had several Italian restaurants of distinction, yet if I am to be honest I must admit that I've never experienced Italian cuisine the likes of which are produced in this wonderful and masterfully prepared house of delight. My beet and arugula salad with goat cheese was a lovely and savoury start to a wonderful evening. Their Gnocchi w/Beef Ragu is like nothing I've ever experienced. The Gnocchi were perfect and oh so soft little pillows of delectable pasta, enhanced perfectly by the beef ragu, Parmesan and creme fraiche. Best. Gnocchi. Ever. My dessert was lemon curd, with fresh fruit and shortbread cookies. Talk about a perfect and refreshing way to end a magnificent meal. My son's choices looked incredibly delicious as well. Their plating is flawless. Their service is top shelf. Our server was a sweetheart. The wood fired oven is epic. The chefs prepare your food right in the front of the restaurant. Don't forget to tell them how awesome they are.

This review is based off my few experiences at this restaurant. The pizza and service is amazing, and if you're looking for a nice little italian place for dinner, this is for you. However, on mother's day we came in for brunch to a half full restaurant which we assumed would mean a short-ish wait. After placing our order it took nearly an hour to arrive which wouldn't have been an issue if our food was as amazing as our recent visits. The prosciutto ON the benedict we ordered was good, perfect amount of salt, the way a prosciutto should be. Unfortunately, everything else on the dish was of equivalent saltiness and made the dish unpleasant. The potatoes were exceptionally average as well. I highly recommend the pizza, but from personal experience, cannot give credit to anything else.

The pasta and pizza mains are really good. The flourless chocolate cake is yummy. The cannoli were crispy but a little too much orange flour in the filling for our taste. None of the 4 appetizers we had were more than adequate. The beef of the beef carpacio was very tasty and beautifully cut but way too much stuff(pickled veg, etc) piled on top - the beef was unfortunately completely overpowered. The bread would be great at breakfast with jam but missing something for an appetizer. The bruschetta was ok and the olives were heated too much and perhaps not enough variety. Overall we did enjoy our meal.

Our first time here and our last. The food was extremely disappointing, what an insult to Italian food. They had limited options to add meat to most of their pastas, the meat they added to mine was cold cuts cooked, it wasn't pleasant. The appetitizer we ordered was raw meat with chips on top, the meat tasted old. The ravioli dish I ordered was not authentic at all and the portion was so small. Their red wine was sour as hell. Go to Asteras instead which is next door, they are a Greek restaurant but their seafood pasta is to die for. The only good thing about the restaurant is the atmosphere, the food sucks and is overpriced.

Ordered the big salad to share, gnocchi, 2 ravioli, cabrese and aracini between us. Very good--properly made and presented. I had a beer and the girls shared 1/2 litre of Italian white. Finished off with canoli-light and not too sweet. Food was delicious and tasty. Highly recommend.

After spending approximately $40 here for one person's dinner on only a salad & gnocchi, you'd think I'd be full, satisfied & happy - as anyone should be after a good Italian meal. Instead, I was still hungry, disappointed & unhappy. Quite the feat to pull that off, I must say ???? The food itself was delicious, pillow soft gnocchi with a braised beef & tomato sauce that was super tender. The salad was spectacular with slices of pickled apples & goat cheese, nice portion size. Really enjoyed the food overall. Unfortunately, no freshly baked bread was included with the meal & the sad, paltry portion of gnocchi would leave anybody hungry, even with the salad. In addition, because I ordered takeout / it was pouring rain / the food boxes are cardboard, I required a bag. The bag I was given wouldn't even fit one box & front of house was too busy on the phone again to try & find something more suitable, so I arrived at my car with soaking wet boxes of food ???? Front of house staff who look after people walking in was completely distracted the entire time I was there, between ignoring people because she's constantly on the phone or running elsewhere in the restaurant with nobody to cover her position, although my actual server was good. Not impressed overall & won't return.
