I have missed this style of Mexican cooking since moving away from Texas years ago. The food reminds me of the little family restaurants in San Antonio and throughout South Texas. The carnita plate is big enough for two people (add one or two more sides of corn tortillas). Salsa was tasty. The simple but ample lettuce and tomato salad was fresh and the rice and beans were simple but tasty. The owners were friendly. From walk in order to walking out with my order was less than 10 minutes. This place is the real deal. Can not wait to try the tamales and pozole.

Delicious Authentic mexican cuisine. Miguel, the host was very polite and gave good description of the menu. The decor of the restaurant and ambience, put you right into mexico. The fish tacos were a really good, the fish was nice and crispy. The tortilla felt like a home-made. The salsa,guacamole and chips were delicious as well. Location is a bit hidden, a big sign would help into driving more people in. You got to eat here, highly recommend this place for some delicious mexican food.

All the other reviewers who wrote about this place are Canadian. I am from California. I just visited in this place today. The food reminds me of being at home. I just about given up finding good Mexican food in Canada. all the other restaurants cover your food in cheese and sour cream. That is not how I grew up eating food. I'm going to come back and try some more of the food on the menu. I heard in the fall and winter time they even serve posole. I'm surprised to find chilaquiles on their menu. The decor of this place is definitely for the tourists Canadian looking for the Mexican experience. They have mole on the menu. Today I ate a chicken tostada. Add add beans to my dish. The bean seemed authentic.

This restaurant is a true family-run business. It is in an unassuming building next to a gas station a couple of kilometers out of downtown Nanaimo. We have a toddler so found it prudent to do a takeaway instead of dining in. The owners were very friendly and patient with my broken Spanish. We ordered chicken enchiladas and a veggie burrito and the food was delicious. It felt authentic like the kind you'd get in Texas/Northern Mexico. I'd definitely come back here the next time I am in Nanaimo.

The place is little hidden next to a gas station so we had to drive around to find it. It is a nice little restaurant. Good customer service and environment. I ordered fish tacos; really tasty. I would really recommend this over nachos or bean/rice dishes. The fish had flavor and but you really need to order more than one because they are small. Price is not too bad but okay. Wish they had more fish/ verity veg dishes on the menu.

EDIT: Since going to Jalapenos, I have had tacos two more times. Once at Earls and once at Baby Salsa - while those tacos were definitely good, Jalapenos is definitely the best value you can get... by far.

Nachos were a HUGE disappointment, and unappetizing. 1 single layer, microwaved (it looks like). Get better nachos at any pub or bar. Was so looking forward to this...but unfortunately it left us disappointed. First off, portion size was right on, if not generous! Quality of the ingredients was also very good, everything seemed homemade, from the chorizo or the tortillas. If to get anything with cheese, expect a lot of cheese! Everything tasted great as well! The ONLY issue was that all the meats were extremely dry. We tried chorizo taco, Al Pastor taco, Carne Asada taco, and Carnitas taco...we were hoping that one of them wouldn't be dry...but unfortunately they all were. We were also hoping, as an authentic Mexican place that we would see some lime slices to help add moisture, and there were none to be found, no radishes either. We'd probably try again in hopes that we caught on an off night as it all tastes good....but was so dry it was hard to eat. Thankfully their homemade Horchata was the best we'd ever had.

What a great little place. Excellent food for reasonable prices. Great staff and super fast service. I had the beef hard shell tacos. My only negative note was there was too much cilantro in the pico de gallo, this is a personal preference so I will know for next time. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be returning to check out the other gems on the menu. Great food and you wont go away hungry.

Ignore the sign "washrooms out of order" is for people the gas station next door sends over. We drove 1/2 mile down the road before venturing in, and didn't order beverages. Recommend the carne asada burrito and the jalapeno's Quesadilla. 10/10 The beef in the beef burrito had a weird paste like texture, and the nacho's (homemade chips with tons of pulled pork and cheese) were a soggy greasy mess. That being said we ate everything, just won't have them next time.

This unassuming little restaurant, off Wakesiah is actually a little gem, if you're in for some authentic Mexican food. The service was fast and courteous and I was most impressed with the enchilada's I ordered (medium heat was still enough to make my eyelids sweat!). We also shared m the Carnita Nachos plate, which was the perfect appetizer for three. Prices are very reasonable and serving sizes are generous! Recommended!

Outside of pandemics they have weekend buffets which are worth their weight in meat, tasty tasty meat. Lately they have been doing specials like take home taco night. My boyfriend and I go there all the time, its a bit of a ritual. Not only is the food absolutely out of this world but you can fill yourself comfortably without breaking your bank. Side Note: for all you VIU students out there, next time your starving before an exam, hit up jalapenos their 1 minute from campus. Go and try the food for yourself, you wont be disappointed.

Short version: great, in food quality, pricing, volume, and service. Long version: weekday lunch in a small town; wasn't expecting much. They have a full menu, but also offer an all-you-can-eat taco bar (that includes drinks). I went for that. Good choice. 6 different meats, good soft shells, rice, refried, potatoes, tasty hot sauce... what more could you ask for? They also had 3 drinks available, self-serve: hibiscus tea, lemonade, and Horchata. I had no idea what Horchata is. Gave it a little taste, and it appears to be milk, condensed milk, vanilla, cinnamon. I must have had 2 liters of that heavenly concoction. Damn them. Now I have to figure out how to make it. If I lived on the same island, this would be my go-to.

This is my family's favorite place to eat. That's besides the fact it's the best Spanish food in Nanaimo. The place is run by two brothers (one is the cook, the other man's the front) whom are very courteous and professional. The serving sizes are quite generous; we always have leftovers). On top of all that is a very affordable dinner with your family. I take my wife, two kids, and my mother there for dinner and it's still around $65.

Best tacos I've found in nanaimo with a genuine Mexican atmosphere. Came here with my Mexican girlfriend and she said it was the best restaurant shes found that's true to Mexican culture and cuisine and, which makes sense because its run by a family from northern Mexico. They have stuff here that my girlfriend hasn't seen since she was in back home in mexico. Try the Carnitas taco and the buñuelos :)

We will definitely return. This was our first visit to Jalapenos, and our food was great. I tried the enchiladas rancheros with chicken. My plate had 3 enchiladas, drizzled in a ranchero sauce and cheese, rice, refried beans, and some shred lettuce. My wife had a beef burrito, which was all alone on the plate, but was quite large. Enough for two meals for her. Along with a soda and a side of guacamole, our bill was under $28. Bueno! This lil 11 table mexican cantina is definitely worth a second try.

So Nice, we had to go Twice! Lovely, clean, colourful, family run, with traditional home cooking right. I felt I was back in rural Mexico. Very reasonable all you can eat "Taco Buffet" on the weekends from 11-7 is worth the trip from Victoria. We stopped here yesterday on our way up Island and on our way back to home, we had to go back. This will be our destination lunch for summer motorcycle cruises. These people are hard working and I hope thier excellent food and friendly service makes them rich: they deserve it.

Family-owned gem! I had meant to visit for a while now and so glad we did. The food is fantastic - fresh and genuine - the closest one will get to Mexican food here in Nanaimo. I rarely give 5 stars but this place had good presentation and food. I've tried the Omelette taco but It was really good. I got it twice, I was not disappointed. It came with a spicy sauce, 2 small wraps.. a decent dized omelette, medium amount bean paste and a little bit of potato cut up. Overall: 4/5. My instructor mentioned the place for lunch. I would recommend it too, even if just out curiosity.

A non-descript location next to a gas station that serves up some delicious Mexican food at reasonable prices. I stopped in for a late breakfast and opted for their Chorizo con huevo, which includes eggs, chorizo sausage, potatoes, beans, and tortillas. I greatly enjoyed my meal - the chorizo was perfectly done and well-seasoned, and I really appreciated the availability of corn tortillas. For only $13.00, it was a bargain. I'd happily recommend this spot, and will likely be back next time I find myself in Nanaimo.

A taste of authentic Mexican food. I have spent quite a few years south of the Canadian Border in places where authentic Mexican food is found on every street corner. Living in Canada, I found myself longing for that same experience and have not been able to find it in Nanaimo until now. I can’t explain how comforting authentic Mexican cuisine makes me feel, but Jalapenos makes me feel that way every time I go. Nice portions, great spice without overwhelming and unessesary heat, and a great price point. If authentic Mexican food is your Achilles heel, this place is going to be the arrow that pierces it.

For such a tiny place, the food here was surprisingly good. I have a hard time finding worthwhile mexican food but Jalapenos has it. On top of a tasty meal I found good service, a nice atmosphere, a fairly large menu and (most importantly) real fresh lemonade. A quality experience packed into very tight quarters in a questionable location, but don't let that stop you from giving it a try.

Delicious authentic mexican food. Ain't no taco bell here. Staff are very pleasant and the portions are a good size. Their mole sauce is yummy and the refried beans have a nice pork flavor to them. Their carnitas are awesome but their carne asada is a little on the tough side (most restaurants are though). The pollo was tasty in fajitas or enchiladas. Prices are reasonable and ambience is nice. Would definitely recommend if you're in the mood for mexican.

Awesome choices in food (most options can be made vegetarian as well), including a breakfast menu. Their tortillas are made in house, and the difference is noticeable. The food is on the milder side of things, but they have hot sauce for both dine in and to go if you like a bit more of a kick. On the price side of things, they aren't expensive nor are they cheap. It's a good deal for the quantity and quality of food. You're looking at around $10 a person for a really good meal. There is no kids menu (yet?) but many of the dishes are large enough to share if you have a little one with you.

Yummy place If you are around Nanaimo stop by, is a very good Mexican restaurant I had the Molcajete for 2 people and is good and with a lot of meat, chicken and shrimp, it is a little different from the standard of Molcajete but is good, comes with guacamole, pico de gallo and beans. Horcata es good too, for dessert I had the buñuelo and was good. I definitely would come back here next time I am close to Nanaimo. Service is fast and friendly.

I stopped in on a whim to get something to go because I was in a hurry. I didn't know what I wanted so the owner was kind enough to help me. She suggested the Flautas and I am really glad she did. The meal was great! I was completely satisfied. My order came faster than I anticipated which was awesome as I was running behind. I will go back again for sure and I will definitely be recommending this restaurant to my friends! Thanks for a yummy dinner.

Heard good things about this place. Went there on a Sunday, turns out it there is a taco buffet Saturdays and Sundays. Tried everything there and it was amazing. Very authentic.

So freaking good, authentic inexpensive tacos. My favourite is al pastor, I like getting a side of pico for them. Steak is great, so is carnitas. If you're basic you might like the chicken but I find that with the least flavour. Authentic Mexican, operated by actual Mexicans, I will never hit up another place in Nanaimo.

Looking for a quick meal, we googled the best restaurants in Nanaimo and this place topped the list and was less than a km away so we decided to try it out. The burrito was authentic, stuffed almost to bursting with quality ingredients and topped with a signature red sauce with a side of refried beans and rice. We also tried three different tacos and a tostada which were equally as good. They serve hot sauce on the side for those, like me, who love to kick up the heat a few notches. And the server/owner, Miguel, was super friendly and very attentive. I'd definitely teccrecom this place to anyone who likes good, authentic Mexican food. It won't disappoint.

Our hosts were warm and wonderful and the food was beyond what could have hoped for everyone I was with was more than satisfied with the food and I often travel with some rather picky eaters but here they were transformed in to hungry explorers And i could not have been more pleased. I like the tacos here. You can get them with flour or corn. I feel this place is a little more Americanized than authentic with lots of their food. I prefer this place over baby salsa. The owners are super nice and social, and the food is good for a cheap price.

I can't speak for the full menu, but what I ordered was worse than hospital food.. Second time trying Jalapenos. Ordered three bottles of pop, a chicken and a steak Tortas, as well as two beef tacos. None of the food I ordered was as it was advertised.. The Tortas said it comes with beans, salad and sour cream. I noticed the beans and a little sour cream on the sandwich, but When I asked the restaurant about the salad it comes with, they told me the salad is actually the shredded iceberg lettuce on the bun.. The chicken was pastey and tasted like it came out of a can. These Tortas sandwiches are about the size of a taco, cost $7.00 each, and mislead you to thinking you're getting a salad with the order. The beef tacos had no cilantro in them. The beef was not like any ground beef I've ever seen.. it was more like a beef paté, and smelled off. Not appetizing whatsoever. Needless to say, I didn't eat any of my order after my sister tried her chicken Tortas, nor did I feed my son who was going to eat a beef taco. Like I said, I can't speak for the rest of the menu, but these items are supposed to be the staples of Mexican cuisine. This cost me about $34 before tip and it was a huge waste of money. 10/10 would not recommend.
