This Restaurant corresponds to the category of Authentic Japanese restaurant.
Quaint smaller place with varied seating arrangement. Small glimpse of waterway (inner harbour). Inexpensive. Reasonable quality for the price.
Awesome authentic Japanese fare served by really sweet people.
Taka is a sushi master. I have had sushi at the “best sushi restaurants” in Los Angeles and this is better. Very welcoming place we are treated like gold when we go in and that’s twice a week sometimes....Great service and high food quality. I don’t know what happened with the few negative reviews but we go because it’s consistent and high quality EVERY time. We talk about going to other sushi restaurants but it never happens, you won’t be disappointed tell Taka That Aaron sent you in and prepare yourself for a treat!
Best in nanaimo good atmosphere
Incredible food and very nice waitress. I’d eat there again ????!
Best sushi on the island!! Great service and very friendly
Always a great experience at Bistro Taiyo! Patio has expanded during COVID. Great atmosphere, tons of amazing menu options (sushi, Izakaya, bento, and more), but best of all is the amazing service. Always super friendly. One of my favourite places in town. Below is a picture of the $20 dinner bento, which includes a starter miso soup, side of rice, green salad, and wakame (seaweed) salad. I chose the potato croquette, sashimi sampler, and grilled salmon.
Really great sushi. Came by myself for a birthday date and the waitress gave me a special treat! Cute little restaurant, and the food is always fresh.
Great selection of authentic Japanese cuisine. Just be aware it is a little close quarters. It is also very busy sometimes, so it may be a wait to get in.
Incredibly friendly staff and excellent food! If you are in Nanaimo you must try this exemplary Japanese Restaurant!
Authentic Japanese cuisine. The sushi is wonderful and consistent. They have the best Ramen I've ever had - try the spicy Tantan ramen! They have a small plates menu as well, which is great for sharing. I've only had good experiences and the staff are exceptionally friendly.
By far the best sushi in Nanaimo! Got to try the crunchy Cali roll. ????
Staff was amazing and friendly. Food is fabulous, and the most similar to what I had in Japan that I've been able to find in years. Great service and they really entertained my toddler.
Staff is so friendly and food is very authentic, the only place all my Tokyo customers want to eat.
Phenomenal service and food!
Just my favourite place ever. Have been going there for almost 20 years. Lovely food and absolutely the best staff ever!
Really good food. Recommend the beginners sushi and the curry sauce is divine
What a fantastic restaurant. From sushi to salmon belly these guys make a varied selection of delicious and truly authentic Japanese food in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The service is also wonderful and we always feel very welcome back (yes, we're return customers!!).
They have the best oyaku don in town!!!!!! Love it!!!!
Fantastic customer service only surpassed by their amazing food!
Delicious and great atmosphere!
This is my local sushi go-to and it is one of the best! Best sushi in Downtown Nanaimo with really fair prices and very kind and friendly staff. Great for takeout and an atmospheric place to dine in as well. Definitely recommend Bistro Taiyo!
extremely polite, welcoming. I ordered a 70$ takeout 30min before they closed and they had no quams or issues with doing it. (not recommending that you do that tho lol) the best sushi, soup and udon in town! prompt and polite service they also have rubix cubes to occupy yourself while waiting for food!
100/100 dining experience everytime.
The food is great, the sushi is very fresh. And the service is great.
I don't know what's going on with the five star reviews of this place, but that was not my experience! In all seriousness, this is the first time I have ever thrown out food that I paid a premium price for. I went on a Wednesday mid afternoon and it was not busy. But no "irasshaimase" for me! Instead I had to seat myself, wait a long while and then ask for a menu. 10 minutes went by and no water or anything. Then I had to ask the sushi chef. That is not his job and I can tell you he wasn't pleased with his staff. I ordered the bento box to go because I felt like the service would take much too long. And I was right. While I was waiting I ended up ordering a piece of sashimi. The quality was ok (thats why 2 instead of 0 stars) But Im going to go with something was lost in translation because I got what I think was a single serving that was sliced into two pieces. At least that's what I'm hoping it was .As opposed to a double serving that was so thin I could literally see through it .I took a photo as it was so odd The Bento Box was worse than the cheapest sushi place ive been. The temperature was lukwarm, the tempura obviously old that had been refried and soggy, the tiny cali roll falling apart amd the rice was not cooked right . The gomaea was a literal cold lump of spinach with a congealed glob of thick, solid seaseme seed something on top . And a chinese style spring roll (why?) with mystery sauce . I suspect that this place probably has decent Sushi because the sushi chef himself was aware of what he was doing. However you cannot call yourself an Izakaya if you can't even turn out a couple hot items that are made properly. Won't be going back for a second chance on this one because there is too much competition that can do such a simple thing so much better.
Most authentic and quality Japanese food in all of Nanaimo. Fish is always so fresh and tasty.
So delicious!!!!!!!
After having ramen in Japan I have been trying to find ramen that compares to that experience. After eating here I have found what I was looking for. Thank you Bistro Taiyo. The best ramen in Nanaimo.
Always friendly and always delicious. Best in Nanaimo!
Every time I have gone here I have a great experience. All the staff are very friendly. The food tastes great and is quick. When I pre-order for my lunch break it is always ready to go when i get there.
Great food. Very friendly people. Nice area.
Dine in
(Translated) Very very nice welcome. The sushi was fresh and excellent. Very nice recommendation from our server to help us choose. Very fast service. Family atmosphere. (Original) Très très bel acceuil. Les sushis étaient frais et excellents. Très belle recommandation de notre serveur pour nous aider à choisir. Service très rapide. Ambiance familiale.
Really nice staff, and great ramen!
Great Service
Delicious Ramen and very friendly service. Party of four were all very satisfied with the variety, fast service and clean space. Doing a good job of not overcrowding, and cleaning menus etc.
Meal type
As we get settled in to Nanaimo life, we once again fall victim to our regular cravings.. this time, for sushi! We thought we'd try out Bistro Taiyo based on recommendations from a colleague. It's a cute space in a great downtown location. We started with some Potato Croquettes which were on special and quite tasty, and some crispy chicken skin, which was terrific. You get a huge portion for your dollar, too. We followed that up with an order of the mixed tempura, which nets you prawns, yams, broccoli, asparagus and pumpkin. The tempura is great and crispy, though a little bland. The pumpkin is the standout. Sushi wise, we had some mixed salmon and tuna sashimi. The salmon was not great but the tuna was tasty. We tried 4 rolls, all fairly simple, and they were all a bit underwhelming. The spicy tuna roll was very uneven and I managed to get a piece with no spice whatsoever. All in all, it wasn't a bad meal, and you get ample food for your money, but it doesn't rise much above the median. Service was acceptable. I will still be back to try some of their non sushi dishes, and eat some more chicken skin. Above meal with two sodas was $64 including tip.
Visitor from Vancouver. Really good Japanese food!!! Happy to find this place and will be back again!
Amazing vegan ramen. Best I've ever had. I'll be back for more! Very friendly and knowledgeable staff, would recommend as a nice date spot.
Always friendly service but seems to be a little disappointing the last few times.
The friendliest staff, and amazing food. Note that there is no sushi on Sundays, but the Best ramen!!
Always an enjoyable lunch spot. The location is great and the staff are always very friendly. The daily Bento box is a great deal.
Consistently delicious food, friendly service and nice atmosphere.
One of the best restaurants on Vancouver Island
The Tonkatsu Black Ramen was delicious, will definitely repeat!
Good food, good prices, great staff
Sushi was really good. I like that this sushi restaurant was actually own by Japanese people. Had the ramen was good. Noodles was cooked perfectly but the broth was salty
Love it
Amazing food and stellar staff! They're very kind and genuinely care about the customer!!
Best Japanese food iv had
Nice restaurant in a cool little area in Nanaimo. Miso was great. Tapas were great. Sushi was great. Service was great. Very reasonably priced. Go check it out if you're near by ..... and hungry.
Always good, I've eaten here a fair amount and the food and service is always good.
Super friendly staff and great food.
Finally it was open and I was able to try. Did not disappoint! Attentive chefs. Sat at the "bar" lots of room and able to watch them create the sushi rolls. ???? great sushi and great downtown location.
Great fresh sushi with an authentic Japanese atmosphere. Accommodating staff. Very reasonable pricing. Take out or dine in here and enjoy!
Awesome food, good service and a nice atmosphere to the space
Our new favourite Sushi restaurant in Nanaimo! Friendly staff, great service and fantastic food! I can not rave enough about the amazing kids menu too! My two girls are now Sushi fans and using chop sticks! Thank you x
Very legit Japanese food. Like all food but if you want ramen then better to go to waku
Best ramen this side of the pacific.
I have eaten at Bistro Taiyo for 10 years and I have truly never been disappointed. Food is always fresh, delicious, high quality, reasonably priced, and served by an exceptional team. Couldn't recommend the more!!
Food was good, the only thing I didn't like was the spring roll. Service was polite and quick. Restaurant gets quite busy.
Clean and very friendly staff. I will go back and have dinner again at Bistro Taino Japanese Restarant in Nanaimo.
Terrific food at a very reasonable price.
Great experience! We didn’t have a long time before taking the ferry back to Vancouver, so we stopped by for a quick lunch. The waitress was super nice, the service was fast and the food: perfect! The tuna (in my tuna don) was tasty and perfectly cut. Would go back anytime ????
This place is phenomenal. I’ve only stopped by a few times when visiting Nanaimo but I keep coming back here because they have some of the best Japanese food I’ve had. From tonkatsu to nigri to sushi to gomaae to agedashi tofu, the food is an exceptional quality and bursting with flavour. Do yourself a favour and eat here!
This might be my new favorite sushi restaurant. Everything is prepared to perfection, so tasty!
Awesome food
Haven't been here for awhile. Was very pleased with it. Affordable lunch menu, everything fresh. Sadly,Ramen only on weekends.Excellent service
The absolute best Japanese food that Nanaimo has to offer. Oishi.
Great Nigiri, fantastic food
Love this place! Great cuisine and atmosphere:)
Lovely sushi as art thanks bc
Excellent sushi with a friendly atmosphere. One of the few places in town where your sushi is made by actual Japanese staff. My friend comes here often to practice his Japanese with the staff. All in all this is an excellent Japanese restaurant that blows the doors off of anywhere else in town!
Best sushi in town
Always fresh food and great service!
Amazing food and friendly staff!
Spicy Ramen!!!! Huge shareable meal.
Special Saturday Ramen was delicious
sUSHI OKAY, NOT THE freshest in town; service not so great.
I love this place the staff is wonderful and the food is amazing
Bistro Taiyo is always great! Wonderful staff and wonderful food!! Always kind!
This is the best place to go to lift your spirits. In my experience, it is much better than Nori's. Why? More peaceful and always good music playing- usually lovely jazz. Nori's is too frenetic. Absolutely the best place but Sushi Tomo is coming on. However, (ST) are hampered by there lack of ambience. Bistro Toiyo in the plaza off Wesley is a wonderful space.
Used to be great quality. Went there today with my family. Bento box was plain. Tempura was soggy and barely cooked. Got a tuna udon salad as one of their healthy option. It was mostly bad cold salty broth. Flavourless noodles. Lettuce with canned tuna mixed with mayo..with tempura and bonito flakes. I expressed dismay immediately since I was not expecting canned tuna at a sushi restaurant where they offered to do nothing. Expressed concern at the cash twice and they barely apologized. Neither tasty or barely edible. Unfortunate but will not be returning.
Service
Always has friendly service and great food!
Incredible izakaya cuisine, the ramen shop on Sundays is also amazing. Very reasonably priced. The atmosphere in the place is unlike anything in the city; it's a perfect hole in the wall tucked away downtown.
Best ramen in town! The broth is rich and full of flavour. Noodles were cooked perfectly. They have a very generous portion so come hungry! Had some sushi to start and the rice was cooked perfectly and the sauces really complemented the different fish.
One of the best places for a great Japanese meal on the island.
Lunch
So good
What a wonderful place for all kinds of japanese food. This is a real Japanese restaurant and the best in Nanaimo. Some people know dont know this but it's an open secret that their food and service is just way, way better than nori. I discovered taiyo many years ago and I'm so glad I did. It's been my go-to place for sushi and ramen. You gotta visit them!
Best sushi place in Nanaimo! Great staff and mouthwatering food!
Taka and the gang have the best japanese food in Nanaimo
The food and the service are always great
Always delicious
Best fish in town. Friendly staff. Small and intimate great for date night.
Always delicious!
Terrific sushi place in Nanaimo's old district. The fish in the sushi rolls tasted fresh and the miso soup was very tasty, especially on a cold, rainy day. Very reasonably priced. Tons of gluten free options too. I particularly recommend the scallop mayo roll, as it was one of the best rolls I've ever had.
Dinner was great as always! Delicious green tea cheese cake ????
It was first, but it will be last. They should focus on food quality more, Let me tell all chefs.. "Go to other Japanese restaurants near there and taste and see what it is like" They need to study more about service and food not only smile. If someone wants to eat Nigiri and roll base sushi, I don't recommend this place.
Range and value of authentic Japanese dishes, kitchen and sushi alike. Unprecedented and unexpected. Welcome to my life, Taiyo! Thanks for all the fish!
This is the second best sushi place in Nanaimo, after Nori. And it's a close second! The best feature of Taiyo is their wide selection of menu choices, including fun items like umeboshi and japanese pickles. Their waitstaff are very friendly and expedient and the atmosphere is cozy and feels authentic. I usually see a younger, downtown crowd eating here. Although the food is always fresh, the sashimi portions are on the small side and not always sliced very carefully. Despite this, I will continue to come back for the great selection, service and value. Domo arigato gozaimasu!
First of all, gorgeous food. I got the chirashi don some time ago and its honestly the most gorgeously presented chirashi don I've found yet in nanaimo. The restaurant itself is a neat little place in downtown heritage Nanaimo, which actually works against this place sadly as the building is old. The interior seems a little odd for a sushi place with its chess-like floor, but there only so much you can do in an old building. The restaurant also has some tricky hours at times so you have to watch when you're going. But the food is simply amazing! Still, prepare to pay for tea, which some restaurants don't charge for depending on their owners. Also? They serve takoyaki here. It's a traditional japanese treat/appetizer that's very hard to find in Nanaimo so grab some if you drop by! *Edit* I love this place even more. They've updated the interior since my last review, and its gorgeous now. +1 star!
Favorite ramen place in Nanaimo! All food is delicious! Amazing customer service!
Everything was amazing my friend had their birthday there
Very good food, a great place to eat.
Delicious food, lovely staff, and great prices
Our 1st visit and very impressed. Nice selection and service is pleasant and prices are fair.
Really good food.
So delicious and excellent service
Had meal for two and it was great food, great service and a great deal. Definitely recommend. I will be back!
Nice little lunch place . Had Bentos and a few nigiri. It was good.
The sushi was fresh and served promptly. The interior was bright and clean. The staff was courteous and attentive. I would return.
Had the daily bento box (teriyaki chicken, California roll, rice, salad, spring roll and potato croquette) for $10 and everything tasted fresh and delicious
Amazing food and ambience
(Translated) Always a great experience and delicious food. I'm happy because I can eat delicious Japanese food without going to Japan ???? (Original) Always a great experience and delicious food. 日本に行かなくても美味しい日本食を食べれるから嬉しいです????
(Translated) It is not easy to eat such good ramen on the island. The price is moderate, the taste is authentic, and there are sushi and various Japanese snacks. Is a good choice (Original) 在岛上能吃到这么不错的拉面实属不易。价格适中,味道正宗,还有寿司和各种日食小吃。是个不错的选择
Excellent, authentic Japanese cuisine down to the last detail. Delicious food, nice portions, friendly staff. Best Japanese restaurant on the Island.
We went for the ramen and it was excellent!! We ordered chicken karaage for an appetizer and then had tsukemen ramen (my forever favourite). The restaurant is lovely and the staff and friendly, kind and quick. It's cute, clean and well organized for these times and the food is perfect comfort. Can't wait to go back.
Best Sushi in Nanaimo
Unfortunately we didn't have the same experience as other reviewers. While the staff were super friendly and the location is quite convenient, the food was disappointing. It's didn't seem that fresh and the Nori was a little chewy. We really wanted to like this place.
Food it always a 5, now if they can get the service to match it will be a perfect place ????
I ordered the new (vegan) Vagen Ramen - spicy. It was delicious!
Great Bento Box lunches as well as other meals. Really like this place. Very nice people too!!! Great service!
Good service and great food
It is nice!
Very good
i love this place so much. the bento box with salmon was absolutely amazing. the curry here is really good too, reminds me of the casual diners back in japan.
Awesome food overall, brilliant idea on their menu to list what dishes had raw fish as we had kids in our party. The place deserves all the positive recognition, no doubt!
Best Japanese food in town.
The Chicken-Karage was greasy deep-fried fat, skin, & bones! The avocado-roll was 90% rice & 10% avocado. The service was slow, and friendly. + over-priced considering small portions served.
Very nice sushi and friendly service. I ordered (for pick-up) the begginer set and the nigiri set. It was fresh and tasty. If you are hungry, order an extra roll or appetizers.
Really delicious food and friendly staff. A great choice if you are looking for a meal in the area.
The staff take courtesy and friendliness to the next level. I've never been treated with more consistent, mindful service.
Hands down the most authentic Japanese restaurant in town, service is awesome and sushi is fresh and delicious.
Genuine Japanese restaurant, so many great items to choose from, but there are few if any Japanese restaurants on the west coast that can rival their amazing Aburi Saba. And the fact that they serve rich delicacies like spring salmon belly and obscure epicurean delights like ikura negiri and ume shiso along with stellar unagi dragon rolls make these guys a required stop every time I pass through this town.
Wonderful service. Such lovely and friendly staff!!! ❤
It appears to me that they are starting to focus more on Ramen, which is awesome news! The Tonkotsu Black had a delicious broth and was methodically packaged for my take-out. Look forward to when you have a couple more add-ins (Corn, bamboo Shoots). Look forward to eating in soon.
It's hard to describe sushi when it's the way it's supposed to be. It's just right, from fresh flavour combinations to textures, portions, and mouth feel. You know immediately when it's wrong. Taiyo gets it right. I'm so happy to have found your little corner in the old quarter. Dami has always been my favorite for solid, consistently high quality sushi in town, but I think you may have moved ahead of them for me. The nigiri and cones set the standard for me at any sushi place and I do think you do both of these the best. The rice is perfectly cooked, the fish is delicate and everything tastes balanced. Love it.
Great authentic Japanese food. Had the dinner Bento box. Friendly staff.
Healthy bento box was quite special. Tempura Undo was alright .Nagiri are disappointing, too much rice with very thin sashimi.
A Hidden Ramen Gem! Bistro Taiyo Japanese Restaurant has some of the Best Ramen I've had in a long time. With a Cute, very Warm and Cozy Atmosphere, Bistro Taiyo feels like your in a Ramen shop in Japan! Would highly recommend going here! The whole menu is awesome! Thanks Bistro Taiyo the Experience!
As someone who has lived in japan before, I can honestly say that this restaurant is both authentic and delicious. It has a very well curated menu with many interesting and amazing dishes. It is a must visit for anyone in nanaimo
Superb food, excellent friendly staff, all around great place!
Best ramen in Nanaimo for sure. If you want a bowl of soup to warm you up this winter they only serve it on Saturday lunch and Sundays. Be careful, we've been back every weekend since we found it! Try the tantan if you like some spice, it's delicious. Solid service too.
One of my favorite restaurants. Great food and wonderful staff. Highly recommend it.
(Translated) Japanese ramen shop (Original) 일본 라멘집
This restaurant is amazing! The service was spectacular and was waitress was very accommodating and sweet. I ordered the bento box and I was shocked with how much I loved it. Everything inside of it was delicious. Unfortunately I did not take a photo, but it looked beautiful as well! I would highly recommend eating here if you’re looking for some high quality Japanese food! Great prices too.
Over priced is what comes to mind first. So if you look at the prices and quality of food...you wonder...and you wonder some more and then you tell yourself, I rather spend that money elsewhere for a better than avg experience. Wait thats what 3 stars denote right....avg?
Exceptional sushi in the Old City Quarter. Highly recommended.
One of the top Japanese restaurants in Nanaimo, I have had one avg experience there over the 5+ times I've visited in the last few weeks. Portions are a great size and you must try the bento box and curry selections. Ciao
The best affordable sushi and Japanese food in Nanaimo. 10/10
Great food, great service, and reasonable prices. Feels like a special 'hole in the wall' type of place. We were coming through Nanaimo and I'd come back here for take out or dine in every time we come through.
Overall the most Japanese restaurant in Nanaimo and one of the gems of Nanaimo cuisine. The only one I think actually run by Japanese. The meals are authentic Japanese cuisine, the bento boxes are good value and the same as you would get in Japan and quite filling. Katsu Kare is great, as is any of their Udon or Soba specialities. Sushi is all good here (maybe not as good value as Nori's, but there is more non-sushi cuisuine here than at Nori's). Also a great place to drink Japanese beer and jaw in the evening - has that Izakaya feel to it... again, the only place in town that will give you that feeling. In addition the owners are some of the nicest people I know.
Not great. Overpriced as it's like tapas. Mediocre quality with fine dining bill.
Amazing sushi! I lived in Toronto before moving to Nanaimo and wasn’t able to find sushi that lived up to what they had back home until I found this place! Most of the sushi places I’ve tried in Nanaimo make their California roll with mashed up imitation crab and mayo and basically no avocado or cucumber. Taiyo actually makes it the right way with the chunk of crab, avocado, cucumber… so good! The rest of the rolls were also delicious and fresh including dynamite roll, avocado roll and crunchy dynamite roll. If you love sushi this is the best in the city!
Great food, very friendly staff and plenty of vegan options!
Best Ramen in Nanaimo!
Very Expensive, OK food, bad service. Right off the bat the service was mediocre at best. Our table wasn't wiped and we sat next to a dirty table our entire meal. Server passed by us many times with a water jug and didn't stop to fill our glasses. The food finally came and was ok, but the prices did not match. $7 for 5pc dynamite roll, upwards of $4 for simple things like a Cucumber roll. Small bento box is $18! Probably wont return as I'd rather go to Sushi Nori or Ryu. Other than that it is a nice trendy place to hangout at the sushi bar with friends. Can't say much for their hot soups or curries as I didn't try them, they could be good though.
Tried it last night with family, it was overall good food and well priced. It's not your usual sushi restaurant, it's more like traditional Japanese home/small eats. The karagga chicken was great as well as cooked seafood dishes. The traditional portions are supposed to be small, great with beer and sake.
First time there . I'm not a fan of sea weed they accomadted this by using soy paper instead . It was delicious. Will go back again some day for sure .
Great sushi
One of the best Japanese places in town! If you're in Nanaimo and looking for a great meal this is the place!
My favourite sushi restaurant in town. Although the location is small, I've never had a problem getting seated, even if it's at the counter when packed. I've had the opportunity to try several of the lunch specials and many different sushi combinations, sashimi, and rolls. The lunch specials are delicious and come in several large portions. The staff are friendly and efficient. Always a pleasant experience coming here!
