This Restaurant is classified in the category of Restaurant.
It’s delicious. There is no doubt about that. The food is great. But the value for money is my biggest concern. It can be pricey and the portions are smaller. But delicious.
I love everything about this place. The food is amazing! They have a smaller menu, but every single thing they have on it, they make to perfection. They give very generous portions that are more than enough to share, but in all honesty, you won't want too. Their mexi fries are to die for, just mind blowingly good. The atmosphere is fantastic. It is a smaller place, but they haven't jammed as many tables and chairs into it as they can. They have excellent art that matches everything about the restaurant. The service is always prefect. They are attentive and great at their jobs.
The food here was ok. For what they charge for items, I was expecting more. I did like the pork belly, but everything else wasn't that impressive. The risotto was ok, but I have had better elsewhere. The bbq blackened carrots had a nice flavour, but were undercooked. We also had the potatoe salad, which they put fish eggs on, so don't order that unless you want a real strong fish flavour to your salad. It is also very loud, so don't expect an intimate environment. Also, its not accessible at all if you have any sort of disability so keep that in mind. There is no ramp to get into the restaurant, and the bathroom stalls are so small, you'd never fit a wheelchair in there/ or be able to move around if you are a larger person.
Amazing fare! Be ready to taste bold creative creations! Wonderful wine selection also. Cool place, small and intimate but relaxed atmosphere.
Came here last night and had their special Wild Boar plate. It's the first time I can remember ever actually wanting to eat more slowly because it was so incredible. It was probably the single best plate I've ever had anywhere, and I will for sure be returning in the future. The service was just as good as the food, too (shout out to Courtney). I cannot praise this establishment enough.
They were extremely busy and clearly short staffed. I felt pretty bad for our waitress who was supporting too many tables but regardless the service was very poor. 2/3 of the dishes ordered at our table were disappointing. Maybe it was an off-night for them, I've heard good things from others.
The atmosphere is amazing cozy and intimate and trendy. The meal was great well prepared and very well presented. The shared meal concept is great and makes for a very enjoyable dinning experience that makes the experience more memorable.
Great food and service!
Hadn't dropped in in quite some time. Was invited to try some different wine vintages before having a few cocktails. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Will return sooner rather than later.
Always great coming to Deer + Almond when in Winnipeg. Great quality food.
We went there for our anniversary. Nice little restaurant in the exchange district. Very different dining experience. Food was excellent. Serving staff was a little different. Very hipster. I guess that's what there going for? But I would definitely go back again.
One of the best spots in the city. Great food, cocktails, atmosphere and artwork. Always let the server just pick everything for you. I was a little disappointed that I didn’t hear an audiobook playing in the bathroom the last time I was their though...
The bartenders know their craft and mix beautiful cocktails. The food is sublime with incredible flavour profiles. If you like different tastes you will not be disappointed.
Comfortable atmosphere and dishes are fresh and healthy
Fantastic food as always and mostly local ingredients whenever possible. The newly renovated dinning room has an understated elegance to it which is excellent. Everyone who works here is exceptional with prompt service, and you can tell they are smiling behind their masks.
I came here with a group of colleagues while we were all working in Winnipeg and this restaurant was a wonderful night out for all of us! Since our party was more than 8 people, we had a chefs table experience- where the chef chose the dishes and made enough for everyone. We had a couple of dietary restrictions and these were gracefully accommodated (ex. Meat on the side for the vegetarians, cheese on the side for someone who was lactose intolerant). It was such good service and each of us with dietary restrictions felt as though we were well taken care of at Deer+Almond. The desserts were delightful and the wine pairings were so thoughtful and a wonderful compliment to the food. Service was polite and friendly as well. I think the bathrooms could be cleaner, but it was a minor inconvenience in the evening. I would highly recommend deer + almond to anyone while they are in Winnipeg! It was a delight.
Very interesting menue and intimate venue but it is quite expensive for the "small plates made for sharing" and some of the dishes had a little too much going on and the end result was not that enjoyable to the pallet. The risotto was excellent.
The meal was great and since we were a large group and could share several dishes. Great place but small if you have a bigger group.
A true must do in Winnipeg. Every time we eat there, we know to expect several "Oh My God that's so good" moments!
Tasting menu here was good. Some sides are super affordable for how tasty they are (the bread sides). They accommodated a request for no seafood, much appreciated. Requested a location away from others, and were seated in the middle of a few groups when there were several corner tables of appropriate size open. So if you prefer being away from people do specifically request a corner or edge table. Dishes change but were all interesting, and combined, filling enough. Especially at a cost less than 80 bucks a person. Friendly and attentive service, moody and romantic atmosphere with the darkness and warm lighting. I'd come back and recommend it.
Was here for my birthday. They accommodated 7 of us and their service was the best! 6 course tasting menu was all very uniquely prepared by the chef with flavours I’ve never tasted before! x

Great serving staff. Attentive but not overbearing. Warm, friendly environment and the most important thing, the food? I've been here twice and it's been amazing both times. Had salt and pepper squid, Manitoba pickerel and the tempura vegetables and dip last Friday and it was the best food I've had in a long while. Maybe all year. I will be going back.
Foods was good, but it took more than 10 mins to get my bill. There was two servers who was serving just 5 tables. She just kept checking other tables except us. 아시아 분 들은 안가는게 나을듯.
This is the location any food lover simply must visit when visiting Winnipeg! The menu changes based on what's fresh and in season along with some features of the day. Best experienced with a good group of friends that are open to sharing plates. Make sure you save room for dessert!
The thinspired menu was a bore and I dozed off trying to finish it. The food while lacking in flava nodes almost redeemed itself with creative presentstiontion but it tasted like free range organic play doh. It was obviously made to show off online, using the free WiFi and Instagram or whatever the next viral app was. As far as the service goes it was minimal at best and the hired help weren't silently judging me as I requested crushed tap water ice they were streaming it live on Snapchat!
Amazing amazing amazing! Finally a great place in Winnipeg to enjoy a nice dinner! Ambiance, service and food all were amazing!
As tourists to the area, this restaurant was recommended to us by our air bnb hosts. We were happily seated in an obviously busy dinner rush without a reservation but it was explained it would normally be required. We appreciated them making room. We were so grateful to experience such an amazing meal! The dinner menu was small but had lots of variety. The ingredients were so fresh and our friendly waitress explained that they are locally sourced from area farmers, and can change the menu selections based on season and availability, which we really love. We really enjoyed plate sharing and the staggered arrival of dishes, the gorgeous presentation and of course the amazing flavours! Everything was amazing! All of that and we felt it was very reasonably priced for the amount of food - our family of four ordered/shared 5 plates and two drinks and paid $125 before tip. Very fair for an awesome dining experience and we all left full! Highly recommend!!
Had a great Saturday evening at the Deer + Almond! Wonderful food, great drinks, in a cozy setting. Would highly recommend for small groups, as the food is served family style, everybody gets to try each dish! The best salad is a great start, followed nicely by the risotto, lamb and beef. Can't wait to go back!
Excellent food and atmosphere. Shared dishes. Staff is very friendly. This is a spot you must visit when in Winnipeg.
As a first time customer of this establishment i can say i am beyond unsatisfied!! we had ordered sweet&spicy chicken which was not even cooked and still pink so then proceeded to tell our server (the bartender) he then offered to take it to kitchen and get recooked to safely eat, upon returning with the piece of recooked chicken we then noticed the dish was filled with cilantro ( not listed on menu) and a extreme strong dislike!!! that ended diner right there, we had asked to speak to manager about this issue since diner was ruined the bartender after giving us the bill said well i'm the manager and i can do or offer anything about the problem unreal!!!!!! of all the establishments we have gone around the world have we ever been treated so poorly by management. ZERO STARS to Deer & Almond.................
I suggest calling ahead to find out if they are open. If they don't answer, they are probably closed. We called ahead, went to their website and checked their social media, trying to get reservations (I don't even know if they take reservations). Finally, we decided to go down, only to find out that they were closed for the week for a Trout Festival. I've heard good things... I hope they stay in business for use to try them next time we are in town!
Wine pours are too small but cocktails are unique and the dishes are fantastic!
Amazing food. Get 1.5-2 dishes per person and share. That way you can try more things! Amazing flavors. I could have licked the beef sauce off my plate. A bit pricier, but slightly less expensive than Chew.
A great experience all-around. For large groups, would definitely recommend the chefs selection, as it allows you to taste most of the options on the menu.
Great place for drinks and apps! Our server was very helpful, and knowledgeable about everything on the menu.
Our ultimate compliment: We went back a couple of weeks later. We're not the type that always goes to the same comfortable venue. This place knocked our expectations out of the park! Original combinations, good value considering, and a wonderful epicurean experience. It is a place for great food at fair value (not cheap but fair) and to share with friends. It isn't all that romantic though and somewhat noise. There is a comfortable chaos to the ambiance.
The food was very tasty, and the staff were very friendly. This restaurant serves smaller sharing plates. We ordered I think 5 or 6 plates between a group of four. They were all really good. I remember the risotto was nice. We also ordered one of that nights specials which wad a shrimp speghetti. I really enjoyed it. And we also order a pork dish, I forget what it was called. But everything was good.
Bit expensive and the dishes, even though they look nice aren't tasting as good as they look. Most of the dishes are intended to be shared. We received a good and fast service. A nice experience overall, just a bit costly.
A truly 5 star experience! We are so fortunate to gave such a talented chef here in Winnipeg. The food is always amazing. If Las Vegas ever found out, he'd be scooped up in a second.
Fantastic food as always and mostly local ingredients whenever possible. The newly renovated dinning room has an understated elegance to it which is excellent. Everyone who works here is exceptional with prompt service, and you can tell they are smiling behind their masks.
The cuisine was fantastic. Each dish was served individually and was excellent to share. Try the mushroom salad. It is truly superb. And the flatbread, which was not on the menu, but a special of the day, was also quite yummy. I was also impressed with the advice and knowledge of our server. She made the dining experience complete and was quite gracious and unpretentious.
Came here for a date night with my fiancee as she's always wanted to go. Food was good - not terribly outstanding. Drinks were very good and unique, I had one that tasted like a smoky cucumber and it was excellent. Atmosphere was very loud (my soft-spoken fiancee had to yell for me to hear her) and the decor looked mismatched; like it was a place that didn't know what it wanted to be about. I did enjoy the big ficus tree in the middle of the room though. Bathroom was super dark and cramped. Server was friendly. Will probably return for another date night sometime.
Amazing food, my wife is celiac and nearly all dishes could be modified for her. Tasty fresh and healthy food, Prompt service, friendly staff and great atmosphere.
Mandel Hitzer (owner) is pure genius! His creative art he puts into his cuisine is masterful. Every dish was fantastic and the service was equally great! Recommend this restaurant to anyone and everyone.
Karage is supposed to be chicken, but it just had a very wired texture. The rice for risotto was hard to chew. Both food were supper salty. A bad food expensive
Deer + Almond's artfully crafted small plates will undoubtedly fill big expectations. The menu continuously evolves as the seasons change-- but one thing remains constant: delicious food packed with fresh flavours. This restaurant's cozy atmosphere will charm anyone!
THEY SERVED TOUGH MEAT!!! Very disappointing customer treatment that showed they did not value customer experience. We had a reservation for 3 people for 6pm today, august 17. I was very excited as it was my first time there and was expecting a satisfying meal. I was hungry too. I ordered the featured pork dish at around 6:15pm. We did not get served until around 6:50pm. (We got a bit anxious as we were going to the Argentine pavilion for the 8:15pm show.) So the pork dish came and I took a bite and immediately noticed that the MEAT WAS TOUGH. When the server came around to ask how things were, I told her the PORK WAS TOUGH. I went through several slices of the pork and everything was TOUGH. I ate just enough to take away my hunger. The server said she told the manager about my comment and that they were discussing it. I was told that the pork came from a new supplier and that’s why the pork was TOUGH. See, other restaurants are quick to offer to replace your meal when you are not happy with your food. Not with this one. No apology came for my unsatisfactory meal and the manager did not come over to talk to me to try to make things better. It is misplaced arrogance. No chef can be arrogant when they serve TOUGH MEAT. That is even sacrilege. I repeated to the server that the MEAT WAS UNACCEPTABLE a few times. I also asked if they are still serving the featured pork dish. She said they are not. I looked at the feature board, though, and it was still there. I took home the half I did not eat. It will be preserved as evidence. TOUGH MEAT Deer+Almond! Shame on you.!
The 5 stars are not given lightly by me. Choose Deer + Almond if you want food found nowhere else (Want a steak or caesar salad? No, not here). In fact, the best way to order is NOT to choose any entree whose flavour you think you know. You won't go wrong. For two, order three plates to share. The menu changes regularly but our three were: Salt & pepper Squid / charred peppers, onion, chili vinegar. Not your usual calamari! A nice mixture of seared and fresh vegetables in vinaigrette. Squid lightly breaded and crisp. Mushroom salad / pumpkin seed, taleggio, wasabi mustard, shiokombu. Unlike any salad you have ever tasted. Exotic and memorable. Risotto, portobello, kewpie, raw macadamia, manchego. You forget how great something simple like a risotto can be when it's done right. This one is. It's in the running for best I've ever had. Mille feuille is layered raspberry desert with the right blend of tart and cream. It went well with the expertly prepared lattes. Wine list is small. I liked my Gruner Veltliner. Decor is a bit worn for a high end bistro. Tile floors and low ceiling make it a bit noisy. But in the end it is about the food. Don't wimp out and choose the expected. Ask the servers what plates are pushing the envelope. You will thank me later.
Food is excellent, atmosphere good evreything was perfect... Little bit pricey, but it is worth it....not really for kids, at least not for every kid, but kids are welcome. ????
I have been twice in the past year and plan on going more! The food and atmosphere compliment the awesome service. Don't even get me started about the popcorn there. Overall a 11/10.
Loved the creative dishes, the overall dining experience and the atmosphere. Soft lighting, plants and a playful colour palette make the space engaging. Some of the dishes were really unique and imaginative. Food 10/10 Service 9/10 Atmosphere 10/10 Value 8/10
No question about it, this place is amazing on all fronts - delicious and quality food, service, price, location, and ambience. They really promote sharing and now I understand why. There were 8 of us for dinner so we shared many dishes and every single one was flavour explosion, including the desserts. Everyone loved all of the dishes - 100%. A winner!
I’ve dined here a couple of times and always receive wonderful service. I always look forward to eating the beet and orange salad every time I go there. Highly recommend to anyone who is looking for a more fine dining experience in the exchange district.
I have dined here twice; both times were great! Service can be slow, but the food is worth the wait. Food is fantastic! I crave the beet and orange salad! Great place for sharing food! Make sure to leave room for dessert!
Warm atmosphere with great food. Our waiter Was amazing. She went above and beyond while serving us. We are definitely coming back for sure.
A unique and delicious dining experience. Dinner portions are designed for sharing. Great presentation and wonderful flavour combinations.
The food was excellent. Tasty and recommendable. Small bougie portions for the price. I can accept that. I'd just say that the service was less than desirable. We got sat promptly by a nice man, but a female server (not ours) brought menus and water without any eye contact, greeting or humanity. We watched her serve other tables with kind gestures, but not us. Our friends were running a bit late (7 mins after the reso). No offer of a drink or welcome. Then after 10 minutes we got a drink. Then friends arrived. Then it was game on. From this point service improved and speed, care and we finally felt welcome. When we said we had a show at 730, we were offered a rush meal. In the end, good food and times, but the initial discord made for an overall poor experience
Never had a bad plate here. staff are extremely friendly, great cocktails. the sourdough bread is great too! Although the 3 weed(5 weed?) bread was not my favourite.
Excellent service, atmosphere, and of course food! Lots of delicious vegetarian options and yummy desserts. Can never go wrong here!
We visited Deer + Almond on Friday, December 29, 2017 for a Birthday Business Luncheon ... We waited in front of the Bar Area and I had to eventually ask do we seat ourselves or are we seated ... There was an empty table at each of the corners in the back of the Restaurant ... I asked if we could have one of those for privacy because it was a business Lunch ... I was abruptly told "No" because they "reserve" those for Parties of 4 or for overfill of Parties of 2 ... We were seated in the centre section where there is a grouping of about 4 tables for 2 and no privacy ... Service was slow ... I had the Eggplant and my dining partner had the Burger and fries ... The Eggplant had way too much tomato sauce on it! ... My Colleague said his Burger and fries were "adequate", but nothing special for the price...We both had a bowl of the Potato & Leek Soup which was served luke warm...The Soup portion was small, but presented in a bowl and should more adequately be described as a "Cup of Soup" not a bowl...During our Luncheon visit the Restaurant never did fill up and the seating in the corner areas that we would have preferred for privacy went unused...After dining our bill was not brought to the table and we had to go up to the bar area to ask for it...Paying was also slow as there was an issue with the debit machine...We did not raise any issues at the Restaurant as we would not have had the time for our soup to be reheated or for another Menu selection to replace the Eggplant...I hope the Deer + Almond Team take note of these comments in order to make adjustments for a better dining experience for future Guests.
My boyfriend and I thought we’d try out Deer and Almond as it’s right in our area. We got seats at the bar with no reservation. I’d say they were the best seats! Bartender was fabulous, took very good care of us without hovering. The food was even more impressive as were the drinks. We thoroughly enjoyed every dish served, the presentation and portions were perfect. We haven’t had a dining experience quite as enjoyable as this in a very long time. 100% would recommend! Thanks Magic Hands! :)
I went to Deer and Almond with some friends for a bachelorette party dinner. We didn't order off of the menu; the chef put together some selections and brought us out different dishes every 10-15 minutes. We started small with some appetizers and worked our way up to some exceptional lamb and salmon. It was a really fun way to try new things, because we never knew what was going to come out next, and we got to taste things that we might not normally order. I had vegan and gluten free guests in my party and the staff made sure to accommodate their needs so that we all had plenty to eat.
Absolutely lovely food, drinks, atmosphere, and service. We sampled quite a few dishes and some nice cocktails, but the trout and Thai herb salad was definitely a standout.
I have eaten here 3 times - twice at the bar, once at a table. Plates are meant for sharing. The presentation is fantastic, the tastes sublime. Definitely worth its #74 or 74 ranking in the 100 best restaurants in Canada. We came across it by accident and I now make a point of going every time I visit Winnipeg. Reservations are HIGHLY recommended! The area it is in is neat as well - the Winnipeg Exchange District. Fun to walk around.
We went for our 5th anniversary. Our server was very friendly, but the place was pretty noisy. We didn't mind it but it was a little difficult to hear what our server was saying. Food was dreamy. I loved the summery touch of dill and asparagus. We don't really spend a lot of money on food, but it was totally worth every single dollar. I had a virgin red rum and it was amazing too.
Excellent food and service! Their approach is that their small plates are intended for sharing (3-4 for 2 people) allowing you to sample more of their menu.
Trendy and classy. They have a great selection of food and desserts. They even make their own Americano. Also, be sure to check with them early during the winter to reserve your RAW: Almond pop-up restaurant dates!
One of my faves. I've been here many times and each visit is consistently amazing. Great staff, food tastes wonderful, atmosphere is awesome! In a city saturated with great restos, Deer & Almond is above. I love bringing people here.
Excellent place for creative dishes and true handcrafted cocktails. The chef elevates every dish into a piece of art, of which we shared several. The outstanding ones included the special of arctic char croquettes served with grilled asparagus and kale, as well as the fried potatoes with capacola and roe, and lastly, the Salt of the Earth dessert. Who knew beet ice cream, mushroom, chocolate crumb and pickled blueberries would rock our world so hard. Absolutely amazing! The service was also excellent, warm and welcoming. We will be back again and again.
I am visiting Winnipeg and I read few recommendations about this place. They asked for a reservation, but since I was here by myself I was able to sit by the counter right away. I didn’t realize the menu for the food was limited, but I was excited for the salad. The salad came, but it was really salty and sour from the mustard. It might be a preference thing, but I just felt like I can use more green or something that wasn’t covered with the sauce. I usually don’t complain, but when the nice waiter asked how my food I mentioned about it. She was so nice to ask what she can do and she added more greens and fish. The salad tasted great! Thank you so much for making my experience great.
Really good food, but the atmosphere was too casual to make it feel like an occasion what with people wearing shorts and menus on chalkboards. If you like that level of casualness, however, this might be a place for you.
Deer & Almond is a must try restaurant in Winnipeg. A few of us went last Friday for a late seating and every dish was unique and flavourful.
The food is INCREDIBLE. We went tonight and both the food and service was amazing! The chefs working together know how to put a flavourful dish together. We will definitely be back! Go here. You will not regret it!
Amazing food with very creative ideas combining popular Asian dishes with western influences. Flavours of the food were very nostalgic and reminded me of what I grew up with but with a subtle twist that transforms the experience. The staff and chef/owner were very friendly and provided a pleasant atmosphere.
Excellent and top shelf service, food and experience! A whole different way to dine. Thought I wouldn't be full after 4 delicious original plates you eat together like at home but I was so comfortably satisfied! Definitely have the risotto and the semifreddo desert. Just amazing!
SO. GOOD. Not cheap, but it's a fair price for what you get; amazing quality and care of your food, excellent service, great wine and cocktails, wonderful atmosphere.
Amazing amazing amazing! Finally a great place in Winnipeg to enjoy a nice dinner! Ambiance, service and food all were amazing!
Amazing culinary experience. Small menu, sharable plates, wonderfully executed, and always surprising! Love this place!
Amazing food and atmosphere, but why are you closed on Saturday? ????
The service alone was the best I've ever had but the food was insane! The flavors for the dishes I had where too good
I have eaten across Western Canada, and this has been my long-time favourite place to eat! Fun, Unique, and One-a-kind flavours. Huge shout-out to Chef Mandel
Always great. Good vegetarian options. Best value at lunch for your dollar.
The restaurant had a nice atmosphere. The menu was somewhat different to what was online, but the food on the new menu was tasty nonetheless. It’s a solid place with good food and service.
Overrated. Drinks were good, staff friendly, setup nice. Food has potential, but everything is covered in oozes of mayo-type stuff that completely hides the original product. For instance, the deer tartare was nice and inovative, provided you stayed away from a sort of aioli in the middle of the plate, which drowned out all other tastes. Likewise for the pork belly, which was covered with some spicy sauce potent enough to interfere with the taste of a nice glass of wine. Finally, food prices are quite steep even for the neighbourhood (booze is more reasonably priced).
We went for dinner last for the first time. Everyhing was amazing. The atmosphere was really interesting and made it feel like I was at a friends house having dinner. The food was amazing fresh and simple. Id recommend going with a loved one and sharing 3 or 4 dishes trying a little bit of everything. The cocktail were different I had the tom yum collins it tasted exactly like the soup in a werid way I did enjoy it alot. My boyfriend had a smoke scotch feature I didnt enjoy it but he loved it there is a little bit of everything that anyone could enjoy. The prices were really reasonable. Ill be back for sure.
This place was great. The food was absolutely outstanding and the drinks paired quite nicely. Got a beer and Old Fashioned and the beer was better, unfortunately. The Helluva Dip is crazy delicious and unique, highly recommended. The Flatbread was amazing as well. And huge on its own. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable
Great atmosphere, great food and drinks and wonderful service. Would definitely recommend for this culinary experience (6 course tasting menu)
Food was tasty. Portions were far too small. We paid $22 for tortellini and we received 7. Over $3 a tortellini is outrageous. Will spend my hard earned money elsewhere from now on.
Quite pricy for the quality of the food served. The pasta was overcooked and the agadashi tofu was bland, but the salt and pepper squid was quite delicious.
You will not regret eating here. This is some of the most flavourful food I have ever had. Quality ingredients and thoughtfully-designed recipes, sharing-style plates perfect for smaller groups, a beautifully varied menu... there was something for everyone and I even thoroughly enjoyed ingredients I don’t usually like. From start to finish, our meal was beyond delicious and perfectly spaced out. If you wish to come, I suggest making a reservation. We were there at 7:30 on a Tuesday and it was still relatively busy.
Its Sunday Dec 20/15 6:35 pm, fought Winnipeg traffic for a hour just to find them closed. Very dissapointed closing at Dinner time, Carnaval restaurant 7 minutes away saved the night :))))
Fantastic food with a great atmosphere.
Unfortunately my wife and I were not too impressed with this place.. Several friends suggested we give them a try for dinner on a recent trip to Winnipeg. Although the food tasted pretty good, the serving sizes were quite small and the prices a bit high.. But the biggest complaint was the cold and generally unfriendly attitude of the staff.. I know we went out of our way to be polite and didn’t ask too much of them, so I doubt the issue was with us.. Maybe it was just an off night for them?? As a side note, the decor is quite nice..
I have a new favourite restaurant. Randomly selected from 4+ star Google Reviews this is probably one of the best dining experiences I’ve ever had. I had the tasting menu which is a 7 course chef’s selection of menu items. Started with the Salt & Pepper Squid. Tomato Salad. Seared Deer Tataki. (I don’t like deer and I loved this) Soft Shelled Crab & Blue Corn Grits Pork Belly Green Apple Sorbet Semifreddo Interesting and delicious seven course sampler. Cocktails were delicious. A young gentleman named Dylan deserves special mention. He is the designer of the cocktail menu and it offers up some unique spins on classics as well as some well crafted originals. Deer+Almond is well worth the visit if you are in Winnipeg. Update December 4: My previous declaration of the Deer + Almond as my favourite restaurant in Canada has been confirmed. My initial visit there was not an anomaly. My friend and I shared 4 courses followed by our own main courses & deserts. Our server did an amazing job of recommending wonderful drink pairings. Excellent service. Phenomenal food. Wonderful atmosphere. If you’re in #winnipeg this is a restaurant you need to visit.
Excellent excellent food, excellent service, and the atmosphere captures the Winnipeg vibe perfectly. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for an experience, not just a meal.
Menu changes and I always find something I like. Very busy, but staff are accommodating - free drinks at the bar for our group that had to wait a "relatively" longer time than normal.
I thought it is highly overrated. Many people recommended this restaurant to me. In one of my salads the lettuce was wilted. If im paying 14 for a small portion i would like lettuce that is not wilted
Delicious food tasting menu with wine pairing!
Unreal as always! Amazing food, service and atmosphere! Nailed it!
Menu changes frequently but always offers something inventive and delicious! One of my favourite places to eat in Winnipeg.
Good central location. Smart venue and very good service. Very busy on a Saturday evening but we had booked ahead to ensure we had a table. Good mix of veggie and non-veggie dishes.
100% the best food in town! The beef tenderloin nearly made me cry it was so good. I never wanted the taste to leave my mouth. I also recommend the risotto. Nice big portions too (family style dining).
Super good food! Original and tasteful! Went there twice over a 5 days trip to Winnipeg...
Amazing night of food and conversation. The staff were amazing at explaining the dishes and helping us decide. The food was awesome and each dish left us wanting more. The deserts are extremely good and very generous portions.
Menu was limited when I went but everything was delicious. Kombucha was good too. Get many plates to share. Great for small groups.
Enjoyed our server Mad Max and he was an excellent guide through the diverse and eclectic menu - the tuna and calamari dishes are can't miss and the bread was not the Olive Garden variety - specials are interesting and not everything will suit you - I say give it a try with an open mind - I would have liked the Brussels sprouts a little more cooked but the flavours were honest and unique. You may not like a dish or 2 but they live on the edge here - the people watching is worth it alone
Deer + Almond is one of my favourite places to eat in Winnipeg, unique menu that has occasional changes, innovative and local specials and a friendly atmosphere with very knowledgeable staff who are more than happy to make a recommendation when asked. Not quick or inexpensive, which probably explains why it’s so good.
What an amazing dinner! The food was spectacular - I'm a vegetarian and they were able to modify their tasting menu to accommodate me. The ambience and decor were fantastic. And our server was awesome! Will definitely come back whenever in Winnipeg.
The dining experience was definitely the best I've had in the city. The wine pairing was perfect with each course and the service was amazing. The chef even took the time to come out and chat with is about the menu and it was a very personal experience. I highly recommend for a special occasion.
Love the tapas style dishes here, seriously one of the best restaurants I've been to. Love the unique flavour combinations, craft cocktails and ambience in this cozy restaurant. Hard not to return constantly!
Probably the best dining experience I’ve had in years! Wonderful simple menu. Very exquisitely prepared dishes. Great service and a superb bartender who knows exactly what he’s doing. A consummate professional I might add!!! Simple but very tasty decore, soft colours very relaxed atmosphere. Reservations required. I’m definitely going back and bringing friends along.
The food is delicious and the service is great. It's a fun place to share dinner with friends after work or before one of the summer events in the area.
Great atmosphere, great food and drinks and wonderful service. Would definitely recommend for this culinary experience (6 course tasting menu)
Incredible food. The dishes being served family style makes it a great to order a variety of wonderful options on their menu and try the many flavour combinations that the chef had to offer. The baby potatoes were very good, and surprising to see the roe on top for some added texture. The ambiance is also unique with interesting art and the dinnerware and serving dishes appearing to be one of a kind handmade items.
Ive gone solo and with friends and have always felt comfortable and excited about the food options which the servers are so great at explaining. Great food and drinks in an interesting yet unpretentious environment. The bar seating is perfect for solo diners. !
A lovely evening with colleagues, topped off with a very supportive service team to accomodate my autoimmune protocol diet requests, resulting in a freshly and original creation of dishes based on my allowed food item selection. Many thanks for the support and the delicious meal.
Great food and wonderful experience! Chef Mandel is awesome!
The photos really don't do it justice, the plates are very well presented and full of colour, really makes you feast with your eyes first.. All dishes were spot on, my only nitpicking would be the squid which was a pretty standard Thai dish and the dessert which I found a little too sweet. But overall, fantastic experience, great interior and attentive/friendly service. I would say, this is a must stop in Winnipeg if you want to have a dinner filled with great dishes with new food pairings. A side note, the agnalotti looked more like cannelloni.
Amazing ambiance and inspired flavours make this a highlight of Winnipeg to share with friends and family. Come enjoy a meal over a couple hours and soak in the nature inspired decor with beautiful and delicious plates to share (or to hoard)! Service has always been personable and well timed.
My wife and I went in just for two lattes and a piece of cake. The lattes were wonderful, the cake was indescribably good, and the staff super friendly. We will definitely go back for a full dinner.
Very interesting, innovative dishes. Try the potatoes with sour cream and roe. It tastes like an interesting take on a sushi roll.
We had one of the most epic meal experiences at Deer + Almond. Love the atmosphere, simple, cozy and hip. The food was unbelievable. Everything came out promptly and tasted delightful. Incredibly balanced flavours. The menu is just enough not to overwhelm but provide plenty of options for varied taste buds. The chef recommended trying the oysters that were on special and what a fantastic decision that was! Favourite restaurant in Winnipeg for sure!! Can't wait to go back.
what an amazing place. The shared food concept is really great and the staff were amazing. The food is out of this world and SO fresh. Great work!
This place was seriously one of the best meals I have ever had, especially the calamari. The menu is small plates which is a great way to experience the range of flavours while creating an intimate dining experience. I loved the Japanese influence that could be seen in elements of the menu. My wife and I are new to Winnipeg and our sever (Justine) went out of her way to make us feel welcomed and even took time to sit down with us and recommended different restaurants to try as well as great shopping spots - she was amazing
Nice place,love the drinks.Highly recommended!!!
Unbelievable food experience. A must try if in Winnipeg. Some of the best food I have had.
I've mostly been here for lunch. Its one of my all-time favourite restaurants in the Exchange! The Royale with Cheese is easily one of the best burgers in town—but all the dishes are excellent!
Deer + Almond is one of the most unique and exciting dining experiences in town. And while not every dish hits the highest points possible, each have enough interesting and tasty bits to warrant a try. I have to applaud them on trying to break the barrier of cuisine in Winnipeg and trying to push the food scene forward. An easy recommendation.
Deer and Almond. "What will we call our restaurant? Let's use two random and unrelated words." Very good appetizers. A variety of flavours that didn't compete but complimented each other. Two of us were disappointed in the entrées. The pork schnitzel was uninteresting and one of the duck confit dishes served was dry. Might have been prepared beforehand and kept hot. My server noticed that my duck confit had asparagus and I'd told her that I'm very allergic to asparagus. The kitchen did another for me and it was very good. Not dry like the other one. So the kitchen isn't paying attention to allergies although told about them. A serious inadequacy. No power door at the entry and an awkward and difficult entry. Don't bother. Go someplace else!
Came later in the night which they accommodated seating. Food tasted as if it was warmed up for the prices you are paying and their image of being a bistro I would not come back here. Definitely not impressed with the food, price, and wine. Need to improve their quality greatly.
Awesome food.. flavor combinations are crazy
Everything here is delicious! The service is great too. All the menu items are meant to be shared, and two people usually eat three or four things together. Expect it to run about $100 for two. Oh, and the deer tartar has now become a seasonal item... bring back the deer tartar! :)
was here for lunch food was amazing, service was great. Was here for a meeting and the server was attentive but not to overbearing was able to have our meeting without too many interruptions. Would defiantly go back
I am currently at a wedding and nearing the end of my main course; I absolutely had to make sure I didn’t leave without writing a review. I am a wedding photographer, so to say I’ve tried a lot of catering is an understatement. Everything from the Maple whipped butter bun, to the incredible salad and now the best vegetarian option I have ever had at a wedding or possibly ever has left me happily stuffed and looking forward to my next Deer + Almond experience! Incredible presentation, flavour is unbelievable, the food is warm and my overall experience is beyond perfection. I would recommend Deer + Almond for any wedding event if you want your guests talking about how amazing the food was afterwards. Everyone at our table is also currently raving about their dishes! The portions are very generous for a wedding meal, so much so, we all can't seem to quite finish our meals and hope you all know it's because we are simply stuffed not because the meal wasn't positively enjoyed. Thank you Deer + Almond for my to date best wedding meal yet! Well done A+++++
Very nice little place to eat but the menu consists of seafood with 1 or 2 options that aren't
Had my birthday party here and it was my first time visiting. Absolutely LOVED every dish. Great vibe. Can't wait to go back.
A unique and delicious dining experience. Dinner portions are designed for sharing. Great presentation and wonderful flavour combinations.
Love the vibe, the service, but most of all THE FOOD. You will find combinations of flavours here you've never seen or considered before. Check. It. Out.
Great service and staff. New set menu is very well thought out with a variety of flavors and textures. On the lighter side in terms on quantity but satisfactory for almost all but the most hungry of diners. Stuffed chicken wings and potatoes as extras were sizable and should be shared between 2-4 people.
First dish we ordered was karaage. It was extremely salty, I feel like the chef accidentally dropped a big spoon of salt into it. I always eat my foods saltier than the average but this Karaage was too salty, I couldn’t even take another bite of it. Its texture was soft as jelly, so it was like you eat a piece of crispy jelly soaked with salt for like a month. The second dish was risotto, also very salty. And be careful with the rice, you may chip your tooth by chewing it. Overall, not worth the money and time.
8 savoury dishes over 2 nights. It is hard enough to wow the customers once. To have the customers come back the following night wanting more is an achievement only few spots in Canada can claim. This is one of them. Interesting, enticing, impeccable flavour pairings + flawless execution + service that is as difficult to find as the authentic flavors themselves = one memorable food experience. No reality TV, no Top Chefs, no pretentious, no fluff just really good food. Very good cocktails. Good wine list. Desserts? Need some work:-).
We just ate at Deer and Almond tonight. We were visiting from out of town and went in based on the reviews. The food alone would have made this restaurant great to us! We had the Orange and Beet salad, the Deer Tartare and the Risotto. It is clear that thought and care go into the creation of these items for the menu. The flavours in the dishes were all well-balanced and every ingredient in each item, from the mushrooms in the risotto, to the nuts in the salad were incredibly fresh and flavorful. However, what made this place really stand out to me was the service. We were served by Alex. She was one of the kindest, most accommodating servers I have come across in a long time! I never write reviews, but I absolutely had to write about this place because we left happier than we came in. Our evening out was completely memorable because of her!
Deer + Almond was a phenomenal restaurant that was suggested to me by several people I encountered in Winnipeg. I went with three friends for a late dinner on a Saturday night. Fortunately, we were able to be seated, albeit at the bar, right away. I'd highly recommend getting a reservation here if you're on a schedule. Most people described this place as a Tapas-style restaurant and that for two of us, we should order 3-4 plates. I found that one entree item per person was plenty. While Deer + Almond did have several Tapas style dishes, their entree items are fantastic and I'd highly suggest getting those. I split the "Beets and Tahini" salad and Risotto with another person. The Beets and Tahini was hands down the best salad I've ever had. The combination of flavors: roasted beets; lettuce; walnuts; oranges; sesame seeds; tahini dressing; and cinnamon work extremely well together. Each bite is different and all are phenomenal. I can't wait to make this salad at home and return to Winnipeg soon to have it again. The Risotto was delicious as well. Risotto is a favorite meal of mine to cook at home and I was excited to see what Deer + Almond would do with theirs. The chickpeas and arugula are strong complementary additions to the rice-based dish. Like the Beets and Tahini, the Risotto gave me numerous ideas on how to improve my own dishes when cooking at home. The bar menu includes excellent craft cocktails; all at affordable prices. The staff was helpful in guiding our decisions and everyone was pleased with their drinks. The popcorn they served was somewhat forgettable. I like popcorn served hot and the flavoring seemed lost. I'd recommend altering the pre-dinner snack to be more of a kettle corn or something served warm. The popcorn however is a refreshing change from the default warm bread and butter option most restaurants would serve. What I also really liked about Deer + Almond was they had a wonderful contemporary space with colorful artwork. The lighting was warm and intimate and allowed for the food, drinks, and dinner conversation to be the focal point. Some restaurants are so well designed that its almost distracting to the most important aspect of dinning out - having fun eating and drinking with others.
Experience was fun but for the price of the food we left hungry and the atmosphere was nothing special at all. Our bill was $268 for two people which is pretty ridiculous to leave hungry. Service was very good but atmosphere and food definately did not match the price.
I give five stars because, there’s no because, just I love everything there. My very first experience was great! Stephanie and Dylan if I rmb their names right lol they are very knowledgeable of the food and would describe main ingredients of each dish and served just right at time when we finished one course and they served the next, which was excellent! The following experience of food was delicious as always. The service was good too but the first time was quite impressive!
I have been here a couple of times and have concluded it's just not my cup of tea. Gave it a second chance today at my husband's request for lunch. Tried the Royale and the soup. Burger had great flavor, but there was no indication on the menu, or by the waitress, that it would only be cooked to medium. I would prefer to have the option, as my hubby ended up eating most of it (and loving it ). I enjoyed his fries. The squash soup was impressively smooth. I just found it a little thick. The husband enjoyed the sandwich special he got. I want to like this place but I just don't think we're meant to be.
Great tasting menu! We had the wine pairing and had some great new wines too. Not inexpensive, but the quality and innovation were really good.
Deer + Almond's artfully crafted small plates will undoubtedly fill big expectations. The menu continuously evolves as the seasons change-- but one thing remains constant: delicious food packed with fresh flavours. This restaurant's cozy atmosphere will charm anyone!
Great place if you’re a vegetarian. Higher end restaurant with every dish tasting amazing. Prices are mediocre until your realize the portion sizes are minimal. Great experience and a must try!
Hyper local ingredients (menu changes often); I heard the owner himself forages. Fun way to connect with people through their shared plate experience.
The best meal my wife and I have had away from any restaurant in the last year. The food travelled so well to our home in La Salle. Super Impressed. Mandel Hitzer the owner drove it out to us. We have been going to Deer & Almond and RAW for years and will continue to. Thank you
Awesome Service and Atmosphere. Overall great menu, I prefer the lunch over the supper. The dessert menu is spectacular. We recently tried the "salt of the Earth" and the semifreddo. I highly recommend.
Quality ingredients and thoughtfully-designed recipes, sharing-style plates perfect for smaller groups, and a beautifully varied menu. Overall a great experience!
Best meal I've had in a long time. It was like a symphony of flavours.
this place has very fancy atmosphere
The tasting menu was well thought and the same care infused into every ingredient. Highly recommend the wine pairing; it's perfectly curated and absolutely elevated the experience. And the staff cannot go without mention -- so cheerful and simply lovely people. From the bartender, to our server, to the sommelier, they were extremely knowledgeable but made you feel at ease and comfortable while travelling through the culinary journey and dining experience. Refined dining meets neighborhood charm. We will absolutely be back!
Was excited to try deer and almond. Finally found parking (only street parking) and arrived a little over an hour before they closed. Told when we arrived that the kitchen was already closed and that we could not get dinner. Was very disappointed. I wish the hours posted were the actual service times.
The food was wonderful, the sommelier was great and really sold the wine and pairings well! The space is interesting and the pink neon lights leave a cool glow.
Top 20 best meal of my life. Phenomenal service, great menu thoughtfully curated. Absolutely loved the decor and ambiance. If there's one restaurant in Winnipeg to visit, it's this one.
Very disappointing when we sat at our table that we made reservations for, we waited for a good 10 to 15 min before someone came up to us to offer us some drinks. Took another 10 min just to get them and they were awful. $10 for a small ceaser that was overpowering in Worcestershire sauce and some other wierd 2Oz drink i could barely get down that was $11. Menu was different from the website which really through me off. We tried the lamb shank and some featured flat bread. When we got our order I was shocked that it was only one piece or shank the size of a drumstick on a bed of fancy parsley and covered in dill on top..... for $32 sadly disgusted, it tasted good when I removed all the unnecessary garnish but not for $32. When we received our Flatbread it was covered in fennel and burnt makes it hard to take a bite. That was $19.... at the end of it we didn't order another drink and didn't finish the Flatbread just got out of there. I strongly suggest if you are not familiar with the dishes on the menu and would like to have a meal with some kind of potatoes and vegetable don't even bother coming. I am usually pretty understanding when services is slow or food isn't hot cause I work in the restaurant industry and at times it can be hectic but this was not the case. I was all for trying something new but we won't be back.
The best meal my wife and I have had away from any restaurant in the last year. The food travelled so well to our home in La Salle. Super Impressed. Mandel Hitzer the owner drove it out to us. We have been going to Deer & Almond and RAW for years and will continue to. Thank you
Arrived for the 4-6pm happy hour, great cocktails, friendly staff, and yummy and unique snacks. And a nicely designed interior.
Unbelievable food experience. A must try if in Winnipeg. Some of the best food I have had.
Fantastic find for dinner - highly recommend
Great cocktails and service. Haven't tried the menu in a couple years but when I was a regular it was top notch and affordable esp during lunch.
This is my favourite restaurant. The food and service is always outstanding.
Thanks for being unique, for amazing service and for perfection in details.
Only went here once. The food was interesting. The portions were too small for me to make this a frequent lunch spot.
My favourite restaurant in Winnipeg. Always so impressed with the unique dishes and flavours. Great spot for a date night or a small group of friends! My favourite dish that they seem to have often is the beet and orange salad. The semifreddo for dessert is fantastic.
This is and always will be my favourite tapas style restaurant. I can not tell you how many times I have eaten lunch but mostly dinner It’s always changing - I love that the menu is slightly different each night - great to have your favourites but it sure is nice to try new dishes that inspire the chef and keeps him creating new flavours to entice our tastebuds The wine list is also very nice with wines that complement the menu Great place to go any day of the week Love it ❤️
All around great experience. The menu optio s were unique, server was friendly / fun. Had an enjoyable evening here.
The food is awesome ???? way better than I expected. And the staff is super nice. Really love the potato salad it taste like heaven.????????????????????I’ll definitely bring my family there at dinner time again.
One word: Phenomenal. Amazing environment, very delightful concept- order food for the table, and share...just like at home! I ordered the pork belly in lettuce taco, which was so tasty, I didn't want to share a single bite. My colleagues also raved about the grilled pork shoulder, risotto, and the pappardelle. When you visit, ask them about their local beer options!
Interesting dishes with lovely staffs
Yum, yum & more yum. Love the small/sharing plate trend going on. Such a great way to enjoy a delicious variety of food and emphases on delicious when visiting this restaurant. It is a smaller space but the tables are arranged perfectly so you do not feel crowded. Great cocktail menu. The albacore tuna plate was my fave!
Lax and trendy environment in The Exchange Distrct, great for entertaining large groups. Reasonable portions sizes and we received very good service.
Ate here for lunch. Food was nice, but it was super loud in there and the service was very slow. A bit disappointing considering how many people have told me that it's great
Great Menu, small plates with great food. Inspired and tasty. Small tables and close quarters but a warm atmosphere
Can't say enough good things about this place. Absolutely delicious and has a Chicago feel. This is our prime celebration restaurant. Cheers to Mandel.
