A completely mellow atmosphere at lunch on a Thursday in late May. Be aware, the outdoor patio can get warm, but it's a very nice space that continues the decor of the interior. We had the good fortune to have had Dario himself waiting today, so the interactions were lively and very engaging. He is a master of the light hearted tease. The food as always was a fusion of flavors that meld into a most enjoyable gastronomic experience. The spicy pork tenderloin with mango, lives up to it's spicy name, but is well worth a try. The presentation is whimsical, as always. Without question a reliable place to find delicious fare.

This was my 2nd visit to the restaurant and I was disappointed. I went with 2 friends who had never been to the restaurant, and they were disappointed as well. The food was fine, however, overpriced for what it was. The prix fixe menu should be just that: prix fixe. I feel that it is false advertising, as several dishes had "add $2, $5, $8" after them. In my mind, this is false advertising. The waitress was, however, the most annoying experience. We had made a reservation, and it was a cold Friday evening in January. We were given a table that was near the door. When we requested to be seated at a table farther away, the waitress/hostess said that all the other tables were reserved. I don't know why she simply could not have put us at another reserved table! We were then informed that the duck was sold out, and 2 of us were planning to have this. This was at 7pm, when we were the first to arrive at the restaurant in the section that we were sitting at--the beginning of the evening! There were diners in another section, but this is a small restaurant, and running out of something at the beginning of the evening is nothing but an indication that the chef is unorganized. The waitress took several cigarette breaks, traipsing through the middle of the restaurant with her coat on and cigarette out and ready, so that if we needed anything, we knew that we would not be able to ask her for anything until she came back from outside. At the time that we paid our bill, one of my friends paid in cash, and had given the waitress a significant amount to which it was obvious that change would be required. After a lengthy amount of time, no change appeared, and my friend had to call "excuse me" to the waitress and ask her to bring change. The waitress called back "I don't have any change!" Then, we heard the waitress mutter that she will try to find some. She came to our table after a few moments and said, "We don't do cash, so it was hard to find change." Are you kidding me? Have a little class, lady!!! What restaurant "doesn't do cash??!!" All in all, a disappointing experience, with food that was so-so, not incredible, and pricey--and not exactly "fixed price," as advertised. We won't be returning.

I got the cheapest off the lunch menu thinking it might be subpar... I couldn't be more wrong! This stuffed chicken breast is absolutely fantastic. Might be too much to say this dish is life changing, but it is fair to say this is the best chicken breast dish I ever tasted! Found this place because of my gluten intolerant friend, and while it sounded wrong, today I thank him for that. Second picture entrees is a beef tenderloin, so good!

I have gone for lunch on a few occasions. There is a varied menu, the soup course is a always excellent and the service is nicely done. I particularly enjoy the beef tenderloin and the duck. I haven't had the salmon but it looks great. Sauces are uniformly excellent. Most lunch entrees are under $20.00.The exterior does not do the interior justice. It's a cosy place. Overall, what's not to like?!

One of my favourite lunch and supper spots. I eat lunch here several times a month and almost always take visiting friends and family for supper here. It's really quite a bargain for fine dining. The fact that the chef changes the menu frequently keeps it fresh and pleasantly surprising. Another plus is that the service is always very warm and friendly.

Really loved the ambience of this place and the food was top notch. It's a pre-decided menu and if you have any allergies they ask you to say at reservation except they didn't say until we were there. So my friend who has a ton of allergies had a lot of questions about ingredients in menu items and possible substitutions. Our waiter was also quite disapproving which was both hilarious and slightly intimidating all at once because we took it as him simply expecting you to eat the food as it was meant to at initial prep. U should have seen his disgust when he thought we asked for "ketchup". I'd definitely recommend it though it was a nice intimate experience.

My wife and I went for dinner on a Sunday evening. We were the only one's in the restaurant. The waiter was very good. He was very friendly and the service was great. The soup was amazing so I told the owner Dario who is also the chef that if he had any left over I would buy some. While we were paying he came and brought me a container to take home. We have been here numerous time and all the food has always top notch.

Food was amazing! My girlfriend is vegan so we called ahead and they made a custom dish just for her. I think it is very reasonably priced for the quality, amount and variety of food you receive. The waiter was very friendly, funny and welcoming. The music selection was very nice and the masks on the wall were kind of strange at first but made for great conversation. As a couple who has worked in various restaurants we can confidently say this has been a exceptional dining experience and would definitely recommend it!

A tasty 5 course dinner for $44, by Dario, the chef of the Manitoba Government's House, in an unassuming small house. Call ahead or they'll close early, like by 9pm, if no customer. There were only 8 diners at 7pm when I arrived and was the last one for the day. I'll come back the next time in town.

I have been going to Cafe Dario for years! I took my girlfriend their for valentines and like always was blown out of the water with great service the BEST Fillet Mignon I have ever had. The price is even affordable when you compare his 5 COURSE dinner to a meal at the keg or other Boutique restaurants. Love the food, people and everything else about it. They never compromises flavor here :) cant recommend cafe dairo enough to friends, family, clients or even strangers. so if you have never been; you have NO IDEA what you are missing

It was an alright dining experience, small place, but cozy. The portion size was a bit small but you do have a full five courses. While I was there I ordered the shrimp appetizer and I think that either the oil was old or the shrimp was just over done but it was just not what I was expecting. The soup was amazing, and very creative. As for the rest of the meal it was good.

The food was excellent, the service was not great initially but improved greatly. My only negative comment is the lack of air conditioning. The dining area was uncomfortably hot even later into the evening. I can't imagine what the temps were like in the kitchen. Four of my group had the rack of lamb and it was cooked a beautiful medium rare and it was paired with a mash potato and we'll cooked vegetables. All of the courses were really good and the experience was great other than the heat.

Great restaurant, we were greeted by the owner. Very cozy and homie feeling. Food is Latin American- Colombian. Price is great and includes one appetizer, soup, salad, entree and dessert for $55 each. Great selection of wine and great environment. I had the lam chops and they were amazing. My girlfriend got the salmon and it was very tasty as well.

Wow! I have heard this place was great, and finally tried it. Everything was delicious, and the service was fantastic. We went during Dine About Winnipeg so the menu was limited, but the food was awesome. The value for money is great! Just know that you will need reservations and that they are normally booked 3 weeks in advance if you want to dine on the weekend. Also, I ordered a spicy dish since I really like spicy food; but when this place says it's spicy, they really mean it! It was as hot as I could comfortably eat.

Good service and good food My appetiser escargot Diabolo was awesome, the spring rolls were delicious, the soup a five spice Asian beef soup was just ok my bowl had very little beef while my friends had chunks of beef. The salad of mixed greens and berry vinegarete was delicious! I chose the rack of lamb for my entrée, while it tasted fabulous the portion was extremely small. Friend ordered the chicken and she loved every bite. The mashed potatoes were excellent Dessert was great however small Overall it was. Good experience may or may not be back will have to see what the menu has at the time.

The food was good, although it was not worth the embarrassment. I have some dietary restrictions and had asked the chef ahead of time whether he could accommodate me. This was not a problem, and I was even asked throughout dinner if some ingredients would be alright. Everything seemed to be fine until dinner was over and the bill was paid... the chef (owner) came out of the kitchen to ask about my restrictions. At first I mistakenly took his questions as concern, but that quickly faded when he told me that unless my restrictions were medical conditions, he feels like he wasted his time putting effort into my meal just so I can "clean my palate" . Before I could respond, showing my appreciation, he stormed off before I had time to say one word. Not only was this embarrassing for me since he said this in front of other customers, but I was out for a birthday dinner with friends, and this completely ruined our night. On another note... I did not get 2 out of the 5 courses but was still charged the flat fee. Isn't it weird how if you add something you are charged extra, but are not discounted if you order less? I will not be returning, neither will anyone I had dinner with that night.

I brought his Birthday cake over there and asked them to bring it after dinner and they surprised me with sparkles and my boyfriend was so happy. Their staff are friendly.

Service was alright and the main course was good. However, the salad was awful. They were sold out of the salad on the menu and sold this one as "organic romaine lettuce salad". It reminded me of the cheap salads my grandma used to make when I was a kid and tasted like they threw some kraft italian dressing on it. I would have rather had no salad. The salad and the soup that was so hot it burnt my mouth absolutely ruined the meal. Based on my experience I would not recommend going.

Cafe Dario is a gem! Service was excellent, the food even better. The home made beef barley soup was a highlight, as well as the beef tenderloin and rack of lamb. The chocolate almond brownie dessert was amazing as well. Everything was prepared with love and care. The ambiance was refreshing, quiet and intimate with interesting decor to look at. Prices are more than reasonable. We loved the two can dine with a bottle of wine deal. At the end of the meal we had the chance to chat with Chef Khan. He was very friendly and you can tell he really cares about the food he puts out. This place is a must visit and we will definitely be back.

Decided to call in last week to ask the availability for approx 10 people for the following day. It was a woman I spoke to. I clearly stated from the get go that I wasn't interested in booking anything since I have to get approval from the party and that I would call later that evening to book if the party agreed. It's like I was talking to a wall. Everytime I spoke she was constantly asking for my phone number and name regardless of what I was saying. Needless to point out that my schedule is very hectic as I work 3 jobs. The following day, after finishing up with my client, I had to rush to where we actually booked...checking my phone I noticed multiple missed calls (unsaved numbers and from the party). Didn't think much of it as I said before, I was in a rush. 2 days after the "booking" at about 3pm (2 hours before the opening of the restaurant) I got a call from a number I didn't recognize. Called back, only to find out it was the owner? He had an accent. He literally wanted to know why we didn't show up and that I shouldn't be leaving my phone number if I'm not going to show up...and hung up on me. Umm...I was caught off guard. It took me a while to understand what was happening. So, wait a second. Even if I did book (which I didn't), wouldn't you wait 30min to an hour and if no show give the table to someone else?? That's if you're busy of course *cough* Bottom line, Calling someone outside business hours to ask for the change is very unprofessional and 2 days after the pretentious booking. For $44 per person and a gratuity of 18% for 6+ people, not including alcohol and poor hospitality I'll take my hard working money else where.

This is my first ever review but I think that cafe Dario has easily earned it. I almost missed the restaurant as I drove by but I was glad I found it. Came in for lunch and had the Bison Milanese. It was beautifully presented and to die for. The service was top notch and Alice was a charm. If I'm ever back in Winnipeg this will be the first place I'll go back to.

We went last week for lunch. Very good. Had a 45th anniversary party here and it was lovely and the food is delicious. Went last nite for my 70th birthday party. We had 7 family members join us. We had a great experience with this place. Everything we had such as the duck, bison, soup salad escargot and empanadas were excellent. Didn't have enough room for dessert so we had to take it home. The chocolate mousse was also excellent even the next day. We'll be back to try more!

*posted after response from owner* I had been looking forward to going to your restaurant for a long time. I still had a nice experience. I was disappointed we had to wait for 20 minutes even though we made a reservation. The wine selections were nice. The appetizers were ok but I expected something more. I wasnt crazy about the soup but the bread was amazing! My main dish was good, I had the chicken. The accompanying vegetables for my main were great! I was thoroughly disappointed with the dessert. I know it is one of those triple chocolate brownies that come in a slab and I was really hoping for something a little more unique. I would like to try coming again because the first time I didn't get that urge to come back again and I was hoping I would have that feeling. Make the second time will be the charm. Thank you regardless!

Went for lunch and had an excellent meal. The soup was served hot and was very good. A wide assortment of meals on the menu all reasonably priced. The lunches we ordered were excellent. We enjoyed the dining room decor as well. The only reason I do not give it 5 stars is that it was quite cool inside but that is not a complaint about the service or food. Go and enjoy a very good meal in a pleasant environment. You will enjoy a very good meal.

We Love this place and have dined here many times with other couples , all who were blown away with the food. I have dietary restrictions to additives, but have no issues eating here as Dario serves real food. Our servers have always been wonderful, some more than others. The plates are wonderfully presented, with a constantly changing variety of imaginative dishes. The set meals and package dinners are a good deal. I prefer to support a small business owner than a boring chain serving commissary items. After reading all the reviews, most complaints occur as a result of interaction with Dario . He lives up to the stereotype of the temperamental chef. I have experienced this myself. He can be a big charmer or ruin your evening with his curtness. He fails to see how he comes across and it's doubtful he's going to realize this, and work on his people skills. He goes through staff quickly, so I believe those who say he yells at his staff, but I only heard raised voices. My advice would be if he comes to your table, keep it short and complimentary , if you wish to leave with great memories of your evening. He has burst my bubble on one occasion when he was rude, suddenly , after what was a nice conversation. We have had wonderful chats both in the cafe and on the phone . His job is to create delicious food, and that is what he does. Just don't poke the bear.

Really a hidden gem in Winnipeg for fine dining at significantly reduced prices. I had driven by it several times without giving it much thought. There is a reason why it is so highly recommend. All of the food was prepared with passion. Many different combinations and tastes are on the menu. Somewhat of a smaller space, but being busy is a good sign for the type of quality coming out of the kitchen. Probably one of the best gems in Winnipeg. Definitely one of the best value propositions.

I come here a lot, and I'm never disappointed. Food is well cooked, beautifully seasoned, creative and unique. Tonight I had rack of lamb in a chocolate mole sauce. I've really appreciated the improvement in the decor over the last couple years. Service tonight was excellent, despite a large geoup and a packed house. The music list is still weird. Air Supply??? Full disclosure: Chef Matt is my brother.

This place has good, very well priced food. It’s heavily but well spiced and makes for interesting dishes. The service is friendly and inviting. They lose a star on their poor cocktails, which tasted like cocktail mix. The cocktails are not expensive though. The decor and music selection can use work as well.

Excellent food. Fixed menu really impressed with good options. Intimate and classy, but not over done. Wine selection is strong as well, though beer and cocktail selection isn't amazing. Customer service is unmatched, Dario is commonly around to greet and chat with the tables.

A nondescript building in an industrial area with decor that is - well - eccentric. You need to focus on the food. The price fix menu $44/person includes salad soup, appetizer, main course and an amuse Bouche dessert. The food is unique - Maybe Latino French fusion would best describe. I had a chicken cheddar roll that was almost like a large taquito. Cheesy goodness. Followed by rack of lamb with black cherry reduction and roasted beets. Such flavour cooked perfectly. A petite lscoop of chocolate mousse topped the evening. Chef Dario popped out to check on our table a couple times. He is a character. Service was attentive. Don’t let comments made elsewhere here about Chef Dario stop you from trying this out. It’s about the FOOD and this meal was an unexpected delight.

It was deplorable. Had terrible customer service literally the second we walked in the door. Immediately the chef came out and scolded us like children for having the door open while we looked inside to see if the rest of our group was there. Left at that point refusing to give this establishment any money since they fail to show us any courtesy.
