Owned and operated by the Mermaid folks, who happen to be neighbors with my grandmother - but that doesn't impact the review! They make a great Eggs Benedict and they even cater to keto and celiac. They made mine with no bun on extra bacon, and my wife's on a gluten free English muffin. Their hours are a bit odd as they close early and Tuesday is donut day. A nice addition this year is air conditioning. The food truck is amazing grub and so is the sit down meals. Love the big chunks of salt on the potatoes! They are nice people aside from the great food. They let us use their wifi and outdoor water tanks when we are at our bungalow in Gabarus.

Gosh, where do I even begin? I adore Selkie's and The Mermaid Food Truck with every fibre of my being. I wish I had the vocabulary to fully express my undying love for both of these businesses. From their stunningly delicious, hearty, and well-portioned meals to the warmth, friendliness, and expert hospitality their staff shows every person who walks into their diner or visits their food truck, I honestly believe that Selkie's/The Mermaid is one of the quintessential Cape Breton eateries.

Was staying at a hotel in Sydney and wanted to go for brunch. After a quick Google search we found Selkies. It is a unique experience. The menu is on the wall, with specials on the counter. You place your order and take a coffee mug of the wall. Fill it up and make your way to the back to find a table. There is a mix of old chairs and homemade benches along each wall. It is very basic but quaint the best part was to come. Our eggs Bennie where awesome. Silky smooth hollandaise sauce, perfectly poached eggs and this baked/deep fried potatoe. Thanks for the delicious brunch.

Wow, me & hubby ordered their chicken bacon club, both of us left Full with 1/2 left. Great sized portions. Prices are average however portions are larger! Very friendly environment, happy and smiling staff who just love their customers and it shows-- you can really see how well they enjoy their restuarant. Very clean and they also have Grab n go breakfast sandwiches and eggs Benedict! I'm sure if you try them you'll be a regular after your 1st visit too.

Selkie's is amazing. Their eggs benny is hands down the best I have ever had. I seriously don't know how they do it. I get eggs benedict almost every time I go somewhere for brunch and most don't even come close to theirs. Service is always fantastic/fast and the food is consistently delicious. Go to Selkie's and I promise you will be dreaming about the food for days after. Make sure to get a cinnamon bun while you're there because those are ALSO the best.

closed at 2pm on a saturday, and doesnt re-open til tuesday? this is the definition of a diner "diners have extended hours, and some along highways and areas with significant shift work may stay open 24 hours." lol

I love this place so very much. I love the amazing food, which is homey and comforting. I love the warm, friendly people. The baked goods are always so tempting and wonderful, especially the donuts. We visit at least once a week. Don't miss Crunchwrap day!

Crazy good food at an even crazier price! $14 for a three egg eggs benedict with bacon, potatoes, and spinach? I don't think it's possible to find that quality for that price elsewhere, friendly staff and nice clean location. Definitely leans towards a trendier crowd but there were still some older folks dining there. If you're coming off the ferry looking for breakfast, or are just stopping by the area, this is your place to go for a great meal.

Went here since it was so close to the hotel and also all the good reviews. The place is very cozy and loved that you can use any of the tea mugs they have. The eggs Benedict was amazing and was so awesome taking with the chef and the best part was that they had Kiki's Delivery Service playing too!!! Definitely will be coming back here

I have been meaning to write this review for a while now, but let’s face it, the last thing you want to do when your wedding is over, is do more wedding stuff. Since last January my husband and I started planning our wedding, and settled on the idea of a relaxed backyard wedding out near Louisbourg in September. I must admit, I thought planning a backyard wedding would be simple. However, trying to fit all the pieces together (tent, table, chairs, sound system, cutlery, etc.) become enough that I wished we had eloped. Little did I know, the biggest challenge had yet to surface: food. We looked at several catering options in the Sydney area. We had started to deal with a pub/restaurant in Sydney back in April that offered a catering service, but getting them on the phone was near impossible. I was planning this from Vancouver, so meeting in person was not an option. We had to communicate through email, and we would get a reply maybe every two weeks from them. It was a month to the wedding, and we still hadn’t concluded anything with this pub. So, you can only imagine my relief when we found the Mermaid Mobile! Kara and Cory were the most amazing people to work with. I cannot say enough to properly describe how ecstatic I was to have these two on board with my wedding. Pre-wedding, they were extremely busy with summer events, but they somehow always made time to reply to my emails or phone calls. Although they mentioned they could pretty much do any menu items, my husband and I really were going for a casual vibe. We brought in a friend to help cook some lobster, but I must admit Mermaid Mobile stole the show with their Buttermilk Chicken. We still have friends telling us that they intend to fly out to Nova Scotia just to get some more of it. Kara and Cory were so accommodating to what we needed. A large portion of the guests had special dietary restrictions and Kara and Cory were able to come up with menu items that catered to all their needs. It was wonderful being able to provide delicious meals to every guest. Not to mention, so many of our guests had no clue how to eat a lobster, so Cory came out with a chopping board and a knife and helped anyone who looked confused. It was so cool to have Kara and Cory involved and mingling with the guests. Kara’s doughnut… I ate way too many. Everyone ate way too many. They were so fresh and sweet. I haven’t had a proper doughnut like that in years! She honestly should start up her own doughnut shop. That was the best doughnut I have had. There were so many things that went wrong during the wedding, and big things too! But just knowing we could depend on the Mermaid Mobile to pull through with delicious food was enough to not let the other things get to us. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a caterer out East. Kara and Cory are solid people, and you can tell that they truly care that your event turns out they was you imagined it. I’ll be visiting them for some buttermilk chicken every time I am out east!

I've worked in the restaurant industry for years, and have enjoyed many many brunches from Toronto to Vancouver to New York City, and THIS - THIS BENNY - has the best Holondaise I've ever had. I had no idea what a hassleback potato was either, but now I know it's THE BEST F$#&ING potato on earth. Even the kale was a sweet sensation. The staff is also so charming and helpful. I would give this place a Michelin star because I would come back to Sydney just for this eggs benedict alone.

An amazing eggs Benedict. The hollandaise was light and flavourful, three eggs on perfectly toasted English muffins. The dressing on the side greens was lovely and tart, and the side potato almost stole the show. We also had the Blueberry pancakes which were fluffy and not too sweet, and a scone breakfast sandwich I'm told was also delicious. Sat on the patio which had a great atmosphere and some live music.
