As of day this firm receives a rating of 4.5 stars out of 5 and the rating has been calculated on 127 reviews.
As you can read, its rating is nearly the top, and it's founded on a large number of scores, so we can be pretty sure that the score is very reliable. If there are many people who bothered to leave their score when they are satisfied with the business, it works.
As you know, we don't usually bother to set reviews when they are good and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or incidence...

Very chaotic. No one seemed to know what was going on. We would like to have had a patio table but they were all full. We were seated upstairs where it was stifling hot. I asked that if a table came empty could we have it. I was told that there was a wait list for the patio. Why wasn't I offered to be put on that list at the beginning? Anyhow, was ready to order and a waiter came and told us that a table had come available on the patio and to go and have a seat at it. Just when I get comfortable, another customer comes along saying that's our table..... And then a different waiter comes, with an accusing look on his face as if I had just seated myself, telling me that the table was for these other people. So... annoyed I got back inside to our table. The waiter that told me to go to the table came and apologized saying that he didn't know about the wait list. We make our order and after what seemed like a very long time, we get our food which was mediocre at best. Won't ever go back. Not worth the time, the effort or the money.
We had a great experience. It was a busy evening (and day, I'm sure) we had to wait for about 30 minutes to get seated, which was fine with us. The staff were very apologetic for our wait. The food was AMAZING and the service was just as good! Would definitely recommend.
Oh my goodness, the pizza on Fridays and Saturdays are absolutely delicious. The crust is amazing! ????
The patio and second story deck have very nice views. Inside, the walls are painted with neat murals. This pub has the best fried fish I have ever had, and I am very discerning. My fish was fresh, hot, flaky and subtly sticky because of the …
Lobster poutine, most amazing experience of my life ????
The best dining experience! Loved the staff input on different dishes. Amazing atmosphere
We came across this pub Sept 15/2019 and I must say it delivered. We only came in for a bowl of chowder and the lobster poutine along with a local beer and a glass of wine. What a lovely spot overlooking the water. Live fiddle music played which added to the ambiance. Real Cape Breton style. Besides great food and good location what really impressed us was it was busy with two cruise ships docked outside and we were still served promptly without feeling rushed and the food came hot without so much as a few sips of our beverages. We sat out on the patio but inside looked very inviting. I hope to come back while we are on our visit here to eat and enjoy the local Celtic music!
My husband and I visited Governors tonight. We were seated with menus and offered drinks. We sat for 30 minutes with our menus closed and ready to order. No one came back to take our food order or offer my husband another drink, as his glass sat empty on the table. After watching staff wait on other tables we got frustrated waiting and decided to leave. We were seated upstairs and there was only about 5 other tables being occupied. My husband went up to pay for our drinks that were served and we went elsewhere. Extremely poor service and we for sure won't we wasting our time visiting again.
Food was really good. Patio was nice, great view. Waiter spilled Ketchup on my wife and another member of our group and wasn't overly concerned or apologetic. Another waitress came over and helped clean it up and even help get it out of her hair. No discount, no offer to remove even the pepsi from the bill. Stained 2 shirts and dried ketchup in her hair, it would be the least they could have offered to recover from this unfortunate experience.
Delicious dishes! Friendly staff.
Had dinner at Governors on September 23/21. The food and service was incredible. If I'm back in Sydney again, I will certainly eat there and I will recommend it.
I have to say the food was amazing and the service was awesome also! I travel quite a bit and this trip I got to experience the awesome food and most of all the great service experience this team offered and a definite restaurant you must visit if you are in the area and I will be back again with my family! Great experience!
This super authentic Irish Bar was located right on the water at the port in Sydney. The bartender was extremely friendly and talked with us about the history of the island. The drinks are cold and the food was fresh and the view was beautiful!
Great food and quick efficient service. Had seafood sampler and seafood linguine. Both very good. And local cape Breton beer. Very busy but they found us s table for two. Definitely recommend.
Love Governors... when I get to Sydney on the rare occasion its one of the places I try to hit up. Especially the summer on the patio deck. Food is great but can get pricy for pub food...but the beer is cold so it takes the sting away!
Delicious food, friendly staff and highly recommend the Friday special, panko breaded haddock
Totally worth the 30 minute-wait! Excellent choice of dishes, fish or meat, and even veggies. The lobster poutine is very good, fried calamari and lobster wontons were excellent appetizers. Try the specialty cheesecake and carrot cake, you won’t tegret it!
Amazing food. Stopped here for a birthday dinner. The wood fired pizza was great. And the lobster rolls were a perfect takeout for a picnic lunch the next day!
Great atmosphere, friendly staff and the best fish and chips I've ever had this side of the Atlantic!!!!
Food was great! A little pricey. Server swap our beer and convinced us she was right. I asked for a different beer and she brought the same beer she recommended. Wasn't served well.
Always a great experience. The service was fast and friendly, and if you're a fan of ribs (as I am), I would suggest you try theirs: delicious, fall off the bone and very tasty. Another home run!
Great place for lunch, the food was excellent and a selection of local beers was appreciated. Nice views if you have a table by the windows. Service was very good.
I had great fried breaded coconut shrimps, with awesome thai sauce. The haddock was also very good with very tasty scallops. Compared to Toronto, I found a difference, fish is fresher here and you can tell. I recommend it.
Amazing place, the burger served by Paul was so delicious. Chers!
Updated review 2019: Still great food, I try to eat here a couple times when I come home for visits. They always have something fresh on the menu. Note: the ladies are forced to wear blue tartan skirts now, and I think it makes them grumpy, so just be aware and prepare yourself. Won ton nachos were very addictive, I had to go back on keto the day after I ate here? Burger was great, poutine and lobster salad ???? Original review 2016: Incredible quality food, amazing seafood. Free parking to the side for when you go in to eat the great food. Sometimes while eating food and drinks, they support local entertainers who have also raved about the food. You have to try the mussles and seafood chowder on the new tables. I originally came here because Soccer gave me a coupon for "buy one item double price, get a second one free."
Food was so tasty, service was great!
The waiter we had was rude and condescending The food was poorly described in the menu, if at all. The portions were tiny, and it was about 40 degrees in there. Too hot for comfort.
At our table of 6, all 6 were thoroughly pleased withe the meals. Fish n chips, smoked meat sandwiches, grilled cordon blue sandwiches (still making my mouth water just thinking about it). The spot was clean. Waitress friendly enough. Nicely laid out, inside and outside. Multi level indoor and outdoor.
Excellent location in Sydney right close to the waterfront. Food was scrumptious and the overall vibe of the bar is very cool. Went on Open Mike night and all the elements of Cape Breton music, fun and atmosphere were all there - on a Tuesday night!
One of the best places to eat when in town and it opens up late.
The food and atmosphere were amazing. The service was a rough inititally as it took several before we were noticed, due to the building design, but was great aside from that. The plate was perfectly sized. It left me able to eat more, but completely satisifed.
It’s was a long wait but food was amazing.
Cute spot, I wasn't super keen on the burger I had. Wasn't quite for my taste but nothing really wrong with it.
Great food! Attentive staff!! Just a tad heavy on the salt. But still 10/10! ????
Good service. Good value. Food was mediocre.
Oysters were good but a lot of shell came off when eating them. Music was pretty good in the pub, atmosphere nice but nothing outstanding. Service could have been a bit better, especially at the door.
Good food, lots of choice, and some locally sourced stuff. Good live music. Note: not fully wheelchair accessible. Call ahead if you need help or want to know options.
We went here on a recommendation and based on previous reviews, but they didn't meet expectations. The seafood chowder was liquid (not creamy) with hard potatoes. The waiter we had seemed overwhelmed (staffing issues?).
The best Pub and Eatery in Cape Breton! With The Best Chefs, Cooks and The Best Waiters.
Darn tasty seafood. Lobster meal was yummy. Good selection of local craft beer. Nice atmosphere in the upstairs pub!
I loved it here! We stopped here for lunch and it was so cozy and all the servers were so helpful. We got the Chipotle Crispy Chicken burger, Braveheart burger, and Grilled Maple Glazed Salmon. We all really enjoyed our meals but I definitely think the chicken burger was the best one. It was so good, perfectly crispy and really tasty so just thinking about it is making me crave it. If I’m ever in Cape Breton again, I will definitely come by again to have that burger.
We went for a late lunch on a Sunday. Above average food and service. Men, the toilet stalls are ridiculously small. I'm a very petite man, I have NO idea how a bigger guy would use that stall.
First two staff were kind of cold, but the guy at the beer garden was great! The beer was great, the food was good, but small portion size, so we went to McDonads after. Ive heard great things about the live music though!
excellent service, great food, great beer only flaw is parking
Good menu, great food, quick and friendly service.
Great atmosphere, plenty of wood and stone. Good beer, good pub food, friendly staff and the live music is fantastic Irish folk. Recommended for a lunch or a dinner. They do serve breakfast foods during brunch hours. Two levels, we ate upstairs where the music was.
Delicious, great server, flavorful beers on tap, beautiful spot!
Always have a great time at Governor's service is fantastic! The food is so good! I've tried pretty much everything on the menu! You can't go wrong! And the PATIO is where it's at. They also have a NEW beer garden! Its amazing!
Governors has great food and wonderful service! They go above and beyond to make sure you're treated well and your food is exceptional. One of my favorite restaurants! Well worth the money.
Every aspect of our experience(maybe the background music could have been better) was superb. Both staff members(1:Micheal)who waited on us were seasoned professionals. The food was amazing, from the cranberry & goat cheese spinach salad to the pastas(maple curry seafood pasta/tomato pesto primavera). The atmosphere is also top notch. Would recommend without hesitation.
Food was great, we ordered nachos, beer battered fish and chips, soup of the day (could have been warmer) but the soup flavour was great and the bread was fresh. Our server was great as well and very helpful.
Their seafood sampler is what I always got. It was pretty good food, good vibes and sometimes they have live music. It must be great during summer times as they have a deck overlooking the harbor.
Recommended by the hotel we were staying at. Food was good even though the server fouled up the order. The pub is quaint and would be a great place to go except that, like other Maritime provinces and BC (not sure about the other provinces), they allow children onto their premises who proceed to destroy the atmosphere with their noise as they run around the pub uncontrolled by their parents who seem oblivious to the chaos they create. Result: a nice afternnon repas spoiled.
A varied menu of expertly prepared meals makes any visit to Governor's worth the trip. The staff are very inviting. There is a nice selection of Scotch (my drink of choice), as well as a strong selection of other drinks and cocktails. I look forward to every visit!
It was a beautiful summer evening, so the patios were packed upstairs and down. We had to wait quite a while for our food. Despite it being busy, our waitress was very nice and accommodating. I had the salmon and it was very good. The view was fantastic; we watched the sunset over the harbour as we ate.
Decent food and good ambiance. Great staff service.
Good food in a very laid back atmosphere. Great location to look out on the harbor if you get a table on the patio
We enjoyed the Lobster Balls, Lobster roll and Blackened Salmon roll. The atmosphere is great and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.
I've been to the Govenors Pub many times in the past 10 years. The atmosphere is changing but the good was always good. Tonight I ordered the seafood sampler and my husband got the beef tenderloin. Both of our plates arrived smelling delicious but they were plated on a giant plate with a tiny bit of food in the middle. For a $25-$30 plate of food it was tremendously disappointing. Also. Upon leaving I noticed on the board a lobster special for tonight that my waiter did not tell me about. It would have been more appealing than my teensy tiny bit of seafood on the gianormously bland plate. I probably won't go back.
The best food we had while on vacation!! Staff were so friendly and knowledgeable about menu and alcohol selection! We tell anyone going to Sydney to stop there!
Fantastic location, patio was very busy, so decided to eat inside in a charming but small room right beside an antique fireplace. Were warmly greeted by the owner who adviser that the restaurant has been family-owned for many years. The waitress was very charming, promptly served drinks, and took the order. Had the fish and chips, as being from a place so far inland (Ontario) good quality seafood is prohibitingly expensive and hard to come by. The owner did inform that the fish is caught fresh daily. It was a revelation! Tender and flavourful cod was lightly battered and served piping hot with home cut fries. The coleslaw was provided on the side and it was very well-balanced between vinegary and creamy flavours. Homemade tartar sauce was incredible and complemented the fish delightfully. The amount of people in the patio and the dining room is a testament that the food is consistently good. One regret: did not try the lobster or the lobster poutine but what was coming out of the kitchen looked and smelled amazing! The price was reasonable taking into account the size of the portions and the quality. The restaurant is conveniently-located overlooking the cruise terminal and it is a short walk from it. Highly recommended.
One of my favourite restaurants in Cape Breton! Great food and great service at excellent prices. The seafood chowder and steamed mussels are two of my favourite dishes. Whether you're out for a romantic evening for two or gathering with a large group, Governors makes it a great experience. A must to dine at if you are in Cape Breton!
Great food and really nice staff. There was a wait to get in but it was only 15 minutes.
The menu covers a large variety. We ordered food to take out and it was good and ready when they said it would be.
Super staff, quality food at a reasonable price (try the oysters), large selection of beer and wine, live music, and central location.
Great views and food. Staff was very friendly and helpful.
The only place I'll eat at in Sydney. The attached craft beer garden is also a must visit. Their fish and chips was better than anything I had on the whole Cabot trail. Servers are fast, efficient and courteous. Stop scrolling for a place to eat and just go here.
The location is great - big old house with a patio and water view. Lots of character. Had mussels - pretty average and not in a broth and no bread so it seemed skimpy. They have a pretty broad but typical menu. Might be worth trying …
Nice atmosphere and friendly staff but the food was terrible I ordered the nachos and after the first chip couldnt stomach another absoultely terrible i dont understand how they could screw up nachos but i sent it back my brother had a …
Lot of options however stay away from the fish and chips. They were overcooked and the batter was way too sweet. They have several gluten free options (mainly sandwiches) and the service was fast. The place is gorgeous and the bathrooms were an old wine cellar. A lot of history
Nice staff..great food..went above and beyond on our order..and fast service. Thanks for the great lunch peoples.
Great choice of food, reasonable pricing super friendly and efficient staff. Ian took excellent care our my group. Highly recommend pub for ambiances and location.
Must go if you've never been. I've tried everything and only the brisket wasn't great. It would be better thicker cut with more fat. Everything else is super. Don't cheap out, try the appetizers and desserts!
Amazing. Staff were so friendly and the atmosphere was warm and fun. The Chicken and Bacon Linguine was to die for. Hands down the best meal I had on my whole trip down East. Would highly recommend you need to go here if in the area.
This place is one of the most famous pub in town. Its close to the port and has beautiful view. The building is a historical one and you can found a lot of old feelings in here. But that is also a disadvantage point. The building is so old even there is no AC nor air exchange here in first floor. If the weather is good, youcan sit outside on the deck to enjoy the day. But if its a rain or muggy day, its not a good experience to sit inside. it feels like out of oxygen. You can open the window but there are flys body stay on the window screen and disgusting. The Food here is perfect. I cant thumb more. The rib is one of the best. Really worth trying. And they also have fresh oyster here. if you are a big fan of true seafood. you gonna try those oyster for sure. In one word, this place is worth having a try. although there are some environment problem.
Food was great, the hostess was amazing and was able to get us a table fairly quickly while we waited in the cozy beer garden. However it took about 30 min for someone to come to our table before we were asked if we had been served. Once the server, Ashley noticed we had not been taken care of she made sure we had a great dinner! (We're pretty sure it wasn't even her section) Ashley did such an amazing job and made sure our meal was spectacular. Definitely recommend when on Sydney.
Great food and the server was helpful and friendly.
Food was delicious, staff were super friendly
Great food, service, and view. Neat old building, cool vintage/historic vibe. The stir-fry was amazing, would definitely order it again. Lobster poutine is interesting, a good starter to share. The lobster wontons were a lot like crab rangoon. Drinks/wine list was mediocre.
The service here is incredible. Servers are polite and very accommodating. (the kind of people you need in a pub and working with a lot of tourists in the area) Fantastic food and two decks facing the water. Cape Breton and other NS craft beers. Awesome!
Amazing food and a great atmosphere! The staff were so friendly and the food came so fast! Hands down the best lobster roll I’ve ever eaten
Governors went above and beyond when an online delivery service erroneously cancelled a huge, time sensitive order. They called right away re submitted the order and organized a delivery taxi service to us ON TIME. Also emailed receipt. Very professional and above and beyond.
Great staff, loved the chicken and added risotto as a side for a minimum charge. Definitely worth a try
The Grilled Cordon Blue sandwich knocked me out!! Delish!! Great service, nice patio overlooking the harbour. All the aces from us!
Nice place with good vibes, but the mussels were sickeningly salty and full of sand.
Exceeded our expectations. All pubs could learn from Governors... great menu, fresh seafood, salad selection, not everything comes out of a fryer, lots of gluten free options, reasonable prices and excellent servers.
My review is based on my experience as a restaurant, perhaps this is a nice bar with great water view, but the food disappoints... my seafood chowder was served cold and my halibut was severely over cooked. Other orders in my group were also not good.
We went here on a recommendation and based on previous reviews, but they didn't meet expectations. The seafood chowder was liquid (not creamy) with hard potatoes. The waiter we had seemed overwhelmed (staffing issues?).
Lots of parking in the evenings and the pub itself is massive with a lot of seating. When I went there was live music playing upstairs and people enjoying the patio. I got the Seared Scallops entree and the portion is massive. It was probably the biggest amount of scallops I had ever been given, which was great. The mash was your standard mashed potatoes and did the job. The seasonal vegetables were hit or miss. Some of them were good and some of them tasted like they came straight from an old bag of frozen veggies and hadn't been cooked long enough. That being said, the large quantity of scallops that were cooked well more then made up for the veg. Service was prompt, friendly, but not overbearing.
Negative one star. Was there on a windy day and had ossues with the outdoor umbrellas. Staff handled the situation after one flew away.
Loving all the new lobster items on the menu!! Lobster poutine is amazing.
Everything was so amazing, I dont even know where to start. Pictured below is the Seafood Platter - recommended by Carl the server/bartender. It. Was. Amazing. Mouth watering. So good, I returned the next day and ordered it again. Also recommended was the local vodka soda drink, Blue Lobster. Everything our group ordered was enjoyed. The service is amazing, everybody is insanely friendly. The live music is pure talent and entertaining. I travel to Sydney often for work and definitely plan on returning every single time I do. See you in a couple of days!
Great location, seems like good food (did not eat here), servers are great but I have been told by the server if I don't eat anything owner will be mad at them. I was just in for a drink. I am from hog town (Toronto) and I found this kind of treatment really odd at an east coast restaurant. Never seen anything like that around here.
Amazing vibe here. The music was perfect- as was the beer - as was the fish and chips. My husband doesn't even like fish and chips and he stole half of my fish and chips lunch. This entire area is beautiful. Hope to visit again next summer!
The outside looked inviting so we strolled in, very pleasantly surprised.... great service, atmosphere was great. Now let's talk Food....we both order lobster roll, may have been called bun , I have had many in my day and this one topped the charts, warm bun with LOTS of lobsters I had the spring mix and the dressing was unique and addictive, my husband had the fries and they were delicious as well. We had local beer that did not disappoint. Price definitely reflected in quality and quantity of food....HIGHLY recommended and will be back our next visit
Nice dinner and wine
I love this spot . Food is so great , waitress are very efficient & everyone's so friendly . The restaurant itself has a welcoming & relaxing vibe. I highly recommend this place ????
A hip high end local eatery with great food and drink selection. The patio and luve music perfectly accompanied the delicious and fresh food. I had the lobster salad and some fine scotch with my groomsmen before the big event and can't think of a better place. Highly recommended!!!
Eating here is on my list of to do's when I come home for the summer and Christmas. The patio upstairs and down have fantastic views. Staff is always friendly, food is great and so is the beer. Wish they had more local selections however. Now that there is Breton Brewing.
We went all the way from Saskatoon to try lobster Meal but they were out of lobster meal????????. we tried other meals, the meal was good, the service was great.???? we walked in and it was really busy. most seats were reserved or was full but we were accommodated upstairs. overall it was good ecperience.
Very busy, but they still manage to get the food to the table in time. The food it fantastic and they often have live music.
Great gluten free options. Everyone was happy with their meals. We tried the seafood and steaks. Thet even cooked up the fish with a gluten free batter for me and it was fantastic
Brandi, the hostess was very pleasant. The place was packed so there was a bit of a wait as expected. Our server Abbie was amazing and so was our food. She let us know the kitchen was behind so we had appetizers while we waited. Our vacation was interupted with a car breaking down on the Cabot trail. We had the day from hell but thanks to these two lovely ladies we ended our day feeling better. We will be back!
I used to go to Governors for years all the time for brunch, dinners and music shows. The food is fairly consistent and it has been an important part of the fabric of our Sydney community. It has just come to my attention in the last few days that Governor’s is no longer serving Breton Brew products due to the fact they are opening a new downtown location. Apparently they are now seeing this new location as a threat to their business. This seems extremely immature and shortsighted as I feel there is more than enough business to go around as people generally patronize these two different businesses for very different reasons. I would like to think that most local business would support each other but this apparently is not the case. I am disappointed to say that I in good conscious don’t feel right about supporting this business any longer and I will be spreading the word to other people.
I have been going here with friends for the past couple years . Sunday brunch with friends and sat evening dinners . The last several times we went the service was terrible and sadly we decided, after giving several more tries we will not be returning or our friends . We do realize the issues the restaurant faces but being short staff all the time and food quality has gone done hill .
I've been here a few times, before smart phones were even a thing. The first time was for a football banquet, the person who owns the restaurant …
The people there are wonderful - treat anybody from 20 to 80 with respect and mirth. The food is delicious! And you can find LIVE music there almost all the time - my favourite.
Came in out of the cold on November 16th. First day of their Xmas menu. Delicious all the way thru. Sat by the fireplace and checked out of the rat race for 1.5 hours. Lovely. 10/10 would recommend.
Standard pub food. With Sydney being a small city, it is the best place to grab a meal and beer. The wait staff is really friendly and accommodating.
Real nice pub experience. Food and service was excellent.
The view from the beer garden is amazing and it was really nice to hear the live music! The fish & chips and the calamari were delicious. My only complaint is about the pan-fried haddock - it was super bland. Service was a little slow but they were friendly.
It was a cold and rainy day in Sydney and I had a huge lunch that day. For dinner we went over to the pub and this sounds crazy but I had the soup of the day, which was the best tomato soup I’ve ever had. It was a tomato and cheddar soup …
Was stuck waiting for the ferry - and the receptionist at the hotel I was staying recommended this place. I was not disappointed. They had a brisket special which was excellent and Brian and his staff made it a very enjoyable way to pass the evening. They had live music there as well. PS:. While I was there for the evening a key must have dropped from my coat pocket and Brian went out of his way to find me and get that key back to me the next day as I was on the way to the ferry. I will certainly go back there again!
Food is decent as is service. Last year I had the chowder and seafood pasta and both were incredible. This time we shared a few appetizers and the only flavour I could taste was salt. The chocolate cheesecake explosion dessert, however, is awesome.
Long wait but well worth it. The food and beer were both great. I had the fish and chips and it tasted great. They also have local craft beer and a kids menu which was extremely appreciated on our vacation.
Really nice historic building. Lots of paths for outdoor eating. Lots of menu choices. Reasonable prices. Quick good service.
This was the first time visiting and was there having a bit of a family reunion. We all got a table upstairs and had a wonderful time drinking and reminiscing until they had to kick us out at closing time. The servers were pleasent, attentive and knowledgeable. The inside was warm, comfortable and felt as a proper pub should feel. We had a great time and look forward to our next visit.
The upstairs pub is a fun place for afternoon drinks, and one of Sydney's most popular music venues. Consistently excellent bar staff. Good selection of local craft beers. Give big Spruce Kitchen Party a try. The upstairs deck, with a fabulous view of Sydney Harbour, is open in the warm months. I would give the pub 5 stars but the food only 3-1/2. The restaurant is owned by a chef who is capable of producing great food, but the menu is pretty humdrum
Menu is fairly extensive with many options to pick from. I had the Fish and Chips on one visit and the Clubhouse sandwich on another visit. Both plates were very good and nicely presented. Ambiance is warm and inviting, with a double sided fireplace on the main floor. There is also an upper floor with a balcony but I did not have a chance to see that yet. The outdoor front patio next to the street is usually a lively place, with umbrellas in the summer. Staff are friendly, accommodating and know the menu well. One of my favourite places to enjoy dining out in Sydney.
A great way to get out of the rain! Had the lobster balls, Montreal smoked meat plate and some beers. We enjoyed them all.
What a lovely spot that we found on a rainy day visiting Sydney! It was made much more lovely by our very friendly and competent bartender/server, Eric. Eric is a gem!! We could overhear him talking to other guests… Let me just say that this man deserves a raise… He is awesome and a huge asset to this place. As for our lunch, my partner had the chowder and the mussels. He said that the mussels were some of the best he has ever had. I had the Tofu Risotto… After a few days on the island for this vegan, that was SO welcome and so delicious!! Neither one of us left anything on our plates. Highly recommend this place….And sit upstairs so that you might get to meet Eric :)
Covid restrictions...man. OK ya gotta wait outside. I'll get to you Thanks, first impressions not so good. Jessie came along, got us seated. Apologized for the first impressions. Drinks and the meal came along quickly. Actually got one of the meals wrong but it worked out in the end. Nice patio area and with the skies cleared it turned out good.
Homey, friendly service, great live music and local beer. What's not to like?
It was good, restaurant was packed, food was good, drinks were cold. It was alright
Lobster wontons and poutine were unexpected, tasty treats! It was busy and we ate outside - view was great!
First time there, food was amazing, great environment and our waitress Melissa was very friendly and helpful! Highly recommend if visiting Sydney!
The wait service is phemonal. I never once had to ask to have my coffee or water refilled. They were right on top of it. They were super pleasant, polite and had a great sense of humor. The establishment is well taken care of, and full of charm. The food is delicious!! Their wonton nachos is a must try!!! I honestly don't have a compliant in regard to this restaurant. It's definitely one of my top 10.
Friendly attentive staff server was friendly and knowledgeable!
Service was a bit slow, but only because they were absolutely packed. For the quality of food that we experienced, it was very understandable. Dirt cheap prices with high end quality. I'm not easily impressed but in this case I'm thrilled
Incredible food and service. Lobster prices vary but always fresh and cooked to perfection. Our server went above and beyond with us and gave some great recommendations. He suggested the lobster risotto and it was TO DIE FOR! Cannot recommend more 6 stars if I could.
Beautiful experience! Killer service! The food is amazing and the vibe is worth paying for on it's own! Thank you!
We went to dinner here while we overnighting in Sydney based on the recommendation of a local from Cape Breton that said it was the best food in Sydney. While I have not eaten anywhere else to make that type of claim, I was very pleased with our dinner. We visited on a Monday night about 7:45 and the restaurant was still very busy, we had to put our name on the list and had a short wait to be able to get a table. Once we were seated the wait staff was great and really kept things rolling. We were able to make our drink order and had our dinner ordered shortly thereafter. We started with the lobster poutine which was the first time we have tried poutine, let alone with lobster in it. This is a dish that the chef beat Bobby Flay with a Throwdown, so of course, I had to try it. The lobster in the poutine was generous and the white gravy was perfect. We ate every bite of our appetizer. For dinner, I ordered a seafood pasta with a maple curry sauce. It was everything that I could have hoped for. The sauce was delicious and the maple and curry flavors were very well balanced. The seafood was bountiful and perfectly cooked. This dish will inspire me to find a similar type of recipe at home since I really can not come back to Sydney every time I want this combo. Our waitress was very friendly and handled multiple big tables at a time while making sure we had everything we needed to have a very nice dinner. If you are in the area we would recommend this restaurant.
The best resturant/pub in town. If the weather is permitting go for the upper patio, but the excellent food is to be had anywhere. I had the best lobster salad ever created, make sure you choose the creamy maple dressing.
Great food, service, and atmosphere????
We ate downstairs in the dining room which had a nice, relaxed atmosphere. The food was tasty with a wonderful presentation. The service was also very good and our waitress was friendly. Would definitely go again and recommend to friends.
Great food!! Staff is awesome. Love the history of this place
Very friendly service & good vibe. Fair selection of local craft beers. Food was very uneven though. Oysters on the shell were fresh and delicious. The fish & chips was good (in terms of preparation, flavor and portion size), as was the blackened salmon wrap. The thin broth (not creamy) seafood chowder, however, was extremely salty and simply not good value for the price. The lobster roll was fair in flavor, (and also a questionable value with a limited amount of actual lobster meat). Good place to chill with craft beer and fish & chips.
Went to Sydney two years ago and the lady working at my hotel recommended this restaurant and I’m so glad I tried it out.. it exceeded my expectations! Every bite had such great flavour, meats and seafood were cooked to perfection, the service was outstanding as well.. I definitely recommend this place and will be back!
Excellent selection for a pub. I had the blackened salmon wrap and daughter had the Lobster Poutine. While my wrap was delicious I had a taste of her poutine and we are both raving about how good it is. Service was efficient and very friendly. I'll be back to try some of the other choices.
Neat looking place with some history. We were seated right away for lunch. The service was good. The food wasn't that great. We had a chicken sandwich and the chicken was kind of rubbery, like it was made earlier and warmed up. I had poutine, I guess it was okay it was the first time I had it. Based on the food I wouldn't visit again and would rather try other places in the area.
Friendly customer satisfaction guaranteed. Great food. I have no idea how they made their little potatoes but I don't think I'll ever come across anything good like that. Overall, 100% good food... yummy
Absolutely incredible service the entire time. Without question one of the best restaurants I’ve attended in my entire lifetime with a gorgeous patio seating area to a sleek homey interior furnished in polished dark oak, and to top the best burger I’ve ever had to date. This is no small feat as I make a point of judging a restaurant on the quality of their burger and this goes above and beyond my expectations succulent patty with a roasted bun and crispy bacon dripping in sauce. Outstanding and very fast service. I have not thought of a single complaint for Governors past I don’t live in Cape Breton. A must visit if in the Sydney area. Ps. Ask for Mike to serve you!
Eat upstairs a lot more interesting and fun. Had the lobster poutine, a little different but very tasty. Nice selection of local drafts, friendly staff and good vibe. Only issue is parking, not much on site.
My favorite place in Sydney to meet friends and enjoy great food and drinks
Mussel good but a bit salty, oyster good, seafood linguini good, steak was normal. We came on Tuesday night and they told us that the wait was about an hour. So we left and came back the next day for the lunch. I recommend you reserve if you want to have dinner there.
Service was great, food was excellent, loved the live music in the background, view of the sunset from our table was stunning!
Amazing food !! Lobster ravioli and lobster rolls are awesome !! Great service :)
Absolutely terrible. We went there at xmas and the food was great. Went tonight and it was the worst cooked steak I've ever seen at a restaurant. My parents 49th wedding anniversary and both had an absolutely terrible meal. I ordered scallops, veg and a salad and received 6 very small scallops, 2 slices of shaved carrot and a very small salad.. The appetizers were bigger then the entree. My father ordered a medium rare Filet Mignon that came out well done and my mothers medium well showed up cremated. Terrible.. Dont eat here!
Quickly seated on a busy Fri night with a 7 year old and 2 mnth old. Staff was quick, attentive and friendly. Food was fantastic and the beer was cold. Should've worn my kilt...????
I was hopeful. But disappointed. Lots of items not available. I didn't want to default to steak but alas with so much not available. Opted for the premium centre cut strip loin. Rare. Arrived medium, confirmed by my exceptional server Michelle. She was the shining star of this visit. Perfectly attentive. (Note to the competition)I would hire her away. The beer was good as was the wine. Overall I couldn't finish the steak. Note to the chef. Don't rely on zucchini to bulk up your veg side. I would have been ecstatic to find a single perfectly roasted whole carrot. Also, the premium eatery in Sydney and no oysters?
Nice place close to hotels downtown. Food was okay, but service was a little slow.
Delicious ricotta and spinach gnocchi ???? great service and atmosphere. Highly recommended!
Really good and friendly service! Extended open hours - we arrived late in Sydney , so it was one of the best options not to be in a hurry to order and enjoy our pint of local beers. We were seated by the fire place, that was nice and worm????. The food delicious.I would strongly recommend the mussels and the sea food linguine, that was melting in the mouth. The mussels were so tasty , so I would say that were one of the best ones we have tried in Atlantic Canada. If you come to Sydney opt for the good quality.
Great food, good prices and big servings. There was live music which was excellent. We were there for valentines day dinner
Great prices with a generous quantity. Located by the Sydney water docks calls for a great walk around town after your meal. Great selection of beer. Fish and chips were fresh and great blend of spices. I felt the coleslaw was very bland. I would come back!
The BEST! Stopped on my way to Newfoundland on July 20 and again today August 8, 2017. No one should pass through without eating at this restaurant. I've eaten all over the country and beyond and have never experienced food and service so good!!!!!! I can hardly wait a year to come back this way again!!!!!!!! These people know food, impeccable service and have created an amazing atmosphere!
Great food. We had the Pub Steak and the Pan fried Haddock. Service was amazing and friendly. Will definitely go back!
Amazing decor, service and staff were excellent. Steak and Chicken Bacon Linguine were awesome, and apple crisp was an amazing finish! Highly recommend
Awesome place. Was in Sydney for 24 hours and felt like a good beer with a local vibe. Lots of selection and a great patio. If you’re passing by, it’s the place to stop for!
Ate at this Pub last night. Food was good, but fish and chips was overcooked. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal but was certainly not near the best I've had. Thought it was also strange that the Ophra Winfrey Network was on the big screen. Ummm pub and the OWN?
Great food and service. Atmosphere was amazing combined with views of harbour. Worth the visit. My GF had lobster benedict and as a local, she confirmed how tasty everything was.
Atmosphere and live music was great. We sat in the beer garden area where we were.told that the menu is "the same". Apparently drink menu is not the same as elsewhere so wait staff is running all over trying to procure drinks for customers. This causes them to forget what they are doing and drop the ball. Happened 3 times during our meal. My husband's meal was served as we were finishing ours. It was just a seafood chowder that needed to be scooped into a bowl. Nachos only had cheese on top. Dry chips for the remainder of the pile. None of our items were fancy...soup, nachos, pulled pork sandwich and wings, water and beer. Shouldn't have taken an hour to get our orders. However THE LIVE MUSIC WAS GREAT!!!
honestly some of the best coconut shrimp and chowder that I've ever had, we are moving to the area and will definitely be back
Awesome little restaurant. The Maple curry seafood linguine is sooooo good! Great service too! Very reasonable prices
Excellent food and service. Great selection of craft beers, seafood and turf if you prefer. Relaxed atmosphere and prompt service. Highly recommended if you are in or out of town looking for good eats in a chill setting.
The food was excellent, the prices were acceptable and the staff were very friendly and helpful. My wife has celiac disease and there were no issues with her food and they were very understanding and accommodating. Would highly recommend!!
Amazing food and hospitality! Views were stunning ????
Many great selections on the menu. A cosy atmosphere with a good view of Sydney Harbour and within walking distance of the cruise ship dock makes it a favorite for both tourist and locals. It's a one of Sydneys more popular restaurant.
Awesome place! We were looking for a good seafood place that is not too expensive and that's what we got. The wonton nachos are delicious and the seafood chowder is one of a kind. The carrot cake we ate is so good, it's unfair to other carrot cakes. We had a waitress named Kelly and she was kind and patient, she is also one of a kind!
My husband and I had the pleasure of eating the lobster risotto and the seafood pasta which were both amazing! The staff was friendly and service was amazing!! We also had the pleasure of meeting the chef who taught his son everything and they are just as amazing!! We definitely recommend eating here not only because of the amazing food but the atmosphere as well and the upper deck overlooking the water is spectacular!!
Great place, friendly and food is good!
Lots to choose from on their menu it's very hard to make a decision. I went with the Pulled Pork Po-Boy and my boyfriend had the Grilled Cordon Blue. Best decision ever made, they both tasted delicious, highly recommend and they're on skip now!
Amazing, truly fall off the bone ribs, deliciously fried calamari, and heartwarming French onion soup. What more can you want?
Service was excellent, food was amazing. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone who is visiting Sydney. Thank you for the amazing service. S&J Porters Lake, NS
Really great food and drinks! Recommend checking this out!
Amazing food. Stopped here for a birthday dinner. The wood fired pizza was great. And the lobster rolls were a perfect takeout for a picnic lunch the next day!
Great restaurant in Sydney! Good variety on their menu! Friendly staff and casual atmosphere
Waoooo nice staff and delicious Fish/chips
Recommend by the locals, this causal seafood pub was excellent. Great location, overlooking the harbor. With nice outside seating. Our waitress, Abby, was the best. She was attentive and very friendly. I highly recommend you ask for her, you’ll have a great time. Fish & chips were the best I’ve ever had. The lobster roll was good and the maple salad was a great side offering. My beer was from an excellent local brewery and the desert was awesome, a perfectly cooked apple crisp ala mode. Mixed with a great balance of cinnamon and sugar.
This place is a lot of fun. Just a short walk from the cruise ship terminal, this is a great place to hang out if the weather is nice. It has a large outdoor patio plus a rooftop deck. There are bars upstairs and downstairs. They even had live music going on the afternoon on a Wednesday. They have a great selection of local beers. They also have a nice view of the harbor and the cruise ship that is docked. The waitresses can get overwhelmed so sometimes it can take a bit to get your drinks.
Sat for 15min on patio where waitresses seen us but did not give menu .. couple arrived and given menu within 5min so we left .. unfortunate as we were really looking forward to eating there! Had not been in a couple years and couldn't keep waiting.. hopeful more waitresses will be added to outdoor area! Will try again!
I happen to get a last table in front of live music! It was an absolute treat to have while enjoying dinner. Food is fantastic as always and they knew what a blueberry tea is!
Food was good morning great buy good. Service was ok. I should never run out of water though :(
Good food and service but price a little high
Good service; Good food, especially the Cape Breton Salad!!
Service was great but the meals could have been better. Both my partner and I ended up getting ill from two very different dishes. First and last visit.
Really good food. Waited in the beer garden for our table to be ready and enjoyed the live music. We ate on the patio thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Had brunch! Coconut shrimp and seafood chowder were on point! The breakfast poutine was a medley of breakfast heaven! Great atmosphere and service was fast! Would highly recommend and would go back!
The food was extraordinary. The service was friendly and fast. It was the best meal and atmosphere in a long time. I would suggest going here if you are in the area. I will definately be going back
The Building has lots of character, it used to be a judges house in the 1800’s and has been a restaurant for the last 40 years. Very friendly staff with good service. Food was phenomenal by far the best burger we have ever had! Great tasting local wine and beer available. Creme Brule cheesecake was to die for! Three chefs on site to do all meals and baking.
Food was greasy as hell! not good at all . The foods always hit or miss there
It was awesome. Great music. Great food.
My husband and I were there on Sunday Feb. 16 2020. We started with one of our favorites thai nachos. They came and looked quite different than usual. They were made very sloppy! So we moved on to order lobster poutines. They came very quickly. Almost too quick! As soon as they were put down they smelled fishy. I thought maybe was because of it being frozen or canned because of the season which is understandable. I have to say that the FOOD POISONING sickness that we had received immediately after and for the next three days was not acceptable!!! We had eaten nothing else that day but fishy, mushy lobster! We tried to contact you from two seperate accounts with no response from either in almost 5 days! I really hoped that you had fixed this sooner and had the decency to respond because we really love going to your establishment with friends! But unfortunately you didnt and im sorry but we will be writing reviews on all your internet platforms now. Its pretty sad that you may loose some good customers over this. Especially when we've promoted your establishment on my husbands Instagram food page many times! Hopefully something is done asap because FOOD POISONING should not be taken lightly! Please if anything take a look at you food safety and food handling process before someone with a weaker immune system than us gets seriously sick or dies!
A fantastic experience! The food and service were great, location was right near the water with a view of the harbor. Lobster poutine was to die for!
Awesome food; great service... respecting social distancing..
Great decor and very cozy upstairs. Both the crab cakes and lobster ravioli were Delicious!
Governor's has so many thigs going for it - cozy atmosphere, a rich history of the city of Sydney, top-tier dishes, friendly staff, and great live music. This is fantastic place to take family, friends, or even that special someone!
My husband and I dined here September 18, 2016. We were on holidays and did not have a reservation. We were accommodated within about 5 minutes. It took well over 10 minutes for our waitress to get to our table to order a drink. After ordering and about 30 minutes later my husband finally asked for some bread. We were not offered water either. When our food arrived we were not pleased. My husband ordered a seafood sampler. He had 2 tiny scallops, 2 equally tiny shrimp and a small piece of fish. The scoop of potatoes was rather small and the veg consisted of a few sliced carrots and maybe half a brussel sprout. My veg were the same and I must of got the other half of his sprout. The mushroom risotto had one pea size piece of mushroom. The food was tasty but way overpriced and for my husband a rather small meal for a grown man. He was still hungry after we left. Terrible service and mediocre food!
Delicious food and drinks, the waitress that served our table noticed someones steak was overcooked before she even put it on the table and had the chef make a new one right away. Very friendly staff who made some great suggestions today.
i always enjoyed the fish @chips here and bragged about how good it is to my friends and workers .we went there on father's day we all ordered fish @ chips .needless to say it wasn't very good .every piece was uniform in size .(obviously a frozen product.)batter was doughy .and fish wasn't good at all. we were there 6 weeks ago and it was awesome didnt look like anything we had on father's day needless to say governors went from being first on my list for restaurants, to not even being on the list.its a shame the food doesnt match the atmosphere of the restaurant.
Awesome food, super nice staff and a great atmosphere with lots of room on the patio, upstairs and down. Enjoyed it thouroughly.
I came in at 5:30pm and they had a table only until 7pm. I ordered soup of the day, lobster wonton and a steak. Soup was good but a bit spicy for my liking. Lobster wontons are good. Steak was ok but it took a while for them to serve me the steak. The waiter is super friendly and nice. The live music started when I had to give up my table.
The service is excellent, food is super good, and the live music is always a good time.
After a number of exchanges the charge for our meal was refunded. We made a reservation for a table at the fireplace in Governor’s Table & when we arrived we were informed our table was given to another party 2 hours earlier, a circumstance that any other restaurant would have handled by informing the first party that they would either be required to complete their meal prior to our reservation or be moved to another table, not at GT. We were offered the table after the other party completed their meal, when we were almost completed our meal. The server stated it was just as well as it was like 7000 degrees at that table, a circumstance that didn’t seem to bother the other party, one of whom the waitress hugged (Covid protocols?) stating I’ll see you next week. Hmmm? Beside the less then the stellar service the food was mediocre, the alleged strip loin was clearly a thin sirloin cut without any particular flavour.
The food was okay for fish & Ships. But a server is good.
Stopped in for a beer during the dragon boat races. Great server....Her name was Molly and it was her second first day or something like that. Anyway..She was awesome!!!!!
Good lunch/supper food and good prices (pub section). Unfortunately, our trip in for breakfast was rather disappointing. The pub has a nice atmosphere. However, acoustics during live performances could be improved. It is a small space, the instrumentals do not need to be amplified so much.
The service was good, even when understaffed. But the lobster ravioli was a small portion for the price, the salad was small, and burger was soggy. But great view and great beer.
Friendly service and delicious dinner! We had the lobster ravioli, lobster dinner and lobster risotto with local beer. For dessert, we tried the apple crisp - good but very sweet!
We were there on Valentine's it was great. When there for our wedding anniversary it was a Cluster F. The staff was overwhelmed there was a group of 30to40 8to 10year olds who took over the place. My husband had the seafood plate will Not order again I had the clubhouse the bread was So hard it tore the skin off the roof of my mouth when I did not eat it she did not even ask was there a problem brought it home and gave it to the neighbours dog. Who takes kids to a adult pub.
First time in Sydney went here for dinner. Very busy place only had to wait 5 minutes to be seated. Sat outside beautiful view our waitress was amazing food was great awesome experience. Everyone should try this place!
Amazing seafood. We were lucky enough to overhear a private ceilidh with music upstairs while we enjoyed our phenomenal dinner.
I had an incredibly delicious meal at Govenors yesterday. Fiddler's Haddock, large portion pan seared in butter, with a twice baked potato, fresh carrots and turnip. I have not enjoyed such great food in a long time. I can't wait to go back next week.
Great outside patio, nice seating options and I liked the string lights! Bar was busy and the washroom was too far away, had to go up the (steep) outside stairs to find the washroom.
Great food and atmosphere. Servers were wonderful. Rousing entertainment while we were there. We then went out on the deck after the show. Everything we were looking for. It was a great afternoon.
Nicely decorated and clean. They had run out of a couple of dishes which the server informed us of when we ordered. Although rated well, our experience matches the negative reviews. We waited 60 minutes for our food. When our plates were ready, I was told that they had run out of my side and I received a plate that was 2/3 empty, a small fillet of fish on top of vegetables. A substitute side salad came out after. The pasta dish had burnt bacon in it that was hidden by the sauce. We wouldn't have minded the wait if they had provided better service and food, especially for the price.
Mid August 2021 visit: The food was merely OK for pub food, definitely not upscale stuff. The place seemed understaffed for the number of tables they welcomed. It took a long time to order, to get our food, drinks, etc. We picked up on …
Never disappointed at Govenors. Another wonderful meal and sunset tonight.
The most consistent restaurant in Sydney, and that's very important to me. Best ribs in town. Lots of support for the music community. Chef Ardon runs a great spot.
Dog friendly on bottom patio. Food and staff awesome
Just got back from the governor, very disappointed . 1 hour and 30 mins from when we ordered. The apps came out, the bruschetta was cold an the tiger coconut shrimp were the frozen out of the box shrimp . We got five small shrimp for $12.99. We mentioned it to the waitress and she said oh, with no concern.. The stir fry came out and very small portion for the price. Never go there again.
Keighley was an amazing server and had great food and drink recommendations. Food exceeded expectations. All around great!
Loved it. Stout was my favorite beer
loved my meal, super busy but the restaurant manages it well
It was busy and very noisy when we went during the evening. They sat us next to a lit fireplace on an already warm night. It took forever for the food. The food was good.
Had the lobster dinner. It was $35.00. We have never had lobster before and was a fun experience. There was live fiddle music as well. This made it a dining experience.
The food was delicious and the service was great! Our server was very friendly and attentive, even though she was busy.
I would have liked to rate this charming looking establishment but it was closed for lunch the day we drove there from Baddeck (because of a private function). It would have been nice to know this before we made the trek. We were referred to Flavors Waterside as an alternative. It too was closed. Best to call ahead to avoid disappointment.
My "go to" is a clubhouse sandwich. Theirs is wonderful. It was on oat bread or something. It was a nice change. Staff were great. The seating is comfortable and walking directions are very clear.
We visited twice last week from away. We stopped in for a swally. Downstairs they directed us to the pub only where we enjoyed live entertainment while getting a little sozzled. The following evening we came back for dinner in the dining room where the service and food was exceptional.
The food is so Delicious and the staff work hard to deliver it in a timely manner.
Meal was fantastic! My wife is gluten intolerant and they had great options. She enjoyed a club sandwich on a delicious gluten free bun and homemade fries. Definitely recommend!
The building has great character. We were on the 2nd floor. The waiter was nice and engaging, the food was tasty and a good value. Would recommend.
Excellent food. Dave Matthews drink was amazing.
Can't have enough great things to say regarding Governor's Pub and Eatery ! It never disappoints ...a wonderful eay to celebrate my birthday with wonderful friends, amazing food and service second to none ! Always my first choice!
Our kids danced to a fabulous set of live music while we waited (briefly) for our lunch. Service was fast and friendly; atmosphere was fun and lively in a beautiful historical building. Food was delicious. We look forward to our next visit.
We visited this restaurant twice on our visit to Sydney. Everything on their menu was impeccable, their chef is amazing. We waited a half hour for a table the first time but it was more than worth the wait!! Great service, amazing food, tasty drinks! I can not say enough about the food!
The food was very good and the staff did and a good job for our reception. The second night when we came with an almost similar size group (12 people) they were able to handle things and do a good job. I recommend fish and chips and the lobster ravioli, they were excellent.
Great local place to dine. Food was great along with the staff and service. I highly recommend this place.
Tasty local beer great service great menu l will definitely eat there next time
Quality service, nicely done food. Was worth to wait in line on a long weekend of high demand, with a grumbling stomach
Dinner for 6 and we ordered different items and modifiers due to health issues and they were totally accomadating.great menu choices for all pallets. Fresh Fish cooked to perfection. Servers so attentive without being intrusive, great wine selections and knowledgeable servers when questioned on wines we were not farmiliar with. Fell in love with ver all over again by the fireplace and candlelight???? A must while Visiting Sydney a sample of award winning Chef ARDON and his Team incredible dishes.
Super busy spot with a nice view of the harbor. Cross contamination was a big issue, but food was pretty tasty. Would like to visit when it's not so busy to see if quality improves. Lots of kids in the pub upstairs, and staff run around like mad. Good selection of draft beer and had a properly cooked steak for the non-seafood eater with us.
Very helpful and courteous staff!! We had just finished driving about 8 hours to be in Sydney for a family funeral. We stopped here to have something to eat and found that the restaurant was full. Even though the pub had live entertainment, the great staff let us have a table to get something to eat WITHOUT paying a cover charge for the entertainment. I want them to know that this really meant a lot to all if us. We drove a long ways to bring my Mom to her brothers funeral and finding a place to eat for her where staff actually went out of there way to accommodate us helped cheer her a little. Even if only for a short while. We will definitely visit here again for the great hospitality and would recommend this fine place to ANYONE that values GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! Thank you Governors Pub!
Had the seafood chowder and the lobster poutine. Both were perfect. Local beers and wine. Have music when the cruise ship comes in. Both fantastic musicians. Could not be any better.
The food was tasty but I found a button in my dish. The server asked if I wanted another. I said yes and he proceeded to forget. He finally came and gave me another after he asked me a second time. I came back undercooked and way too salty. He actually charged me full price for my dish and offered no compensation. I would not recommend this restaurant.
Great seafood! Enjoyed their steamed mussels, their beer battered fish n chips (poutine-d of course!), and garlic shrimp! Very nice place with friendly staff!! Beautiful views from their second story balcony!!
Fantastic spot on the ocean. We were able to bring our pup, on the bottom patio, and the service staff brought water for him. Wonderful vegan option of maple lime tofu with coconut risotto. The tofu was incredibly tasty, which isn’t easy. We liked it so much we came back just for it. Great craft beer selection and service as well.
Well presented food. Great staff.
Stop hiring pretty girls that have no idea how to do their job. Molly was our waitress, pretty girl but could use more training. I wanted no tomato on my sandwich and she put tomato and handed it to me she didn’t even check if the order was correct. I’m allergic and could have went into shock. She didn’t offer desert and when asked for the desert menu she took forever. Then didn’t know the desert of the day. This isn’t the first time we’ve had bad service. All pretty and welcoming but suck at waitressing. Then when we received our bill she didn’t charge us for drinks so must have forgotten to ring them in.
The view alone is priceless. Beautiful atmosphere, great customer service and delicious meals
Great bar and friendly staff. Had the lobster roll was awesome. Had live music Saturday afternoon fiddle and organ music. Overlooks the water nice ambiance.
The atmosphere was awesome. We sat on the lower patio and had a sunset meal overlooking the harbor. The food was nothing short of utterly delicious I had the maple curry seafood linguine with muscles, shrimp and large sea scallops while my wife had the chicken cordon bleu sandwich which she loved. Our server Kelly was fantastic juggling a very busy seating without skipping a beat. The Governors Pub is a must do while in the area.
Great pub with two levels of patio. The food here is good with many local items. Our group enjoyed haddock as well as lobster Mac and cheese. Good selection of craft beer and some Nova Scotia wine too. Check out the artwork on the second floor with Gaelic quotes.
Food is AMAZING! Try the lobster poutine.
Food was delicious great service ????
We have been in Sydney for 5 days and have had drinks a couple of times and dinner at this pub. Today was our last day in Sydney so we thought we would stop by for a last drink this afternoon but it was not meant to be. We arrived in the pub and it was pretty much empty ( the cruise ship guest had pretty much wound up) but we were unable to get anyones attention or service. In fact one server " his name is Ian" served the table ajoining us and still ignored us. After 25 minutes I went to the bar to order my own drinks and still no service. We decided to head out to somewhere else and when we were leaving I saw Ian. I advised that we were leaving as we could not get srrvice and he said OK . It was obvious that he did not care that we were leaving. Really hard to believe this is the same place we went to 3 other times. Very disappointed. Would recommend not going to this pub when a cruise ship is in port.
A beautiful old historical house which has been converted to a pub. It is conveniently located in downtown Sydney. They have a pub upstairs and a dining room downstairs. We arrived after a brisk cool walk in the fall, so were happy to have a table right by the fireplace. Service was excellent and food was delicious. I had a chicken cordon-blue sandwich and my wife had their seafood chowder which although not as thick as she likes it was delicious. We also had an order of fish & chips which was HUGE and delicious. It is a very attractive building with lovely decorations. A nice place for a lunch.
Loved the place, ambiance and location. The service was excellent. Our hostess, Katiewas amazing. She made us feel special and help us select food that we would enjoy, which we did. She brought some beer samples of the local beers as my husband couldn't pick one for they were all new to him. Loved the lobster roll. The Moroccan Chickpea soup was delicious. I did go and buy the Jost Chardonnay that I had here for the first time. The shrimp appetizer was scrumptious. I would recommend this to all visitors as locals are lucky to go any time.
Nice spot. Food was good. Oysters were spot on. Was hard to find a waiter when we needed one, but it was busy so not a major ding.
Cool vibe with a wide variety of seating areas. Diverse menu of well executed items and friendly staff.
Relaxing & welcoming surroundings. Friendly efficient service ,great food , nice view from outside seating & upper deck . I highly recommend this place .
Good beer selection and food was great. Loved the view from the deck.
Food was good...and the place was really busy...but for each part of my meal, there was some little thing missing...the food did not "sparkle". Death by chocolate cake could have used some fresh whipped cream, for instance. Room was dark..had to use phone flashlight to read dessert menu....
Food was was great ???? but no longer carrying Breton Brewing products? Very disappointing
Fantastic food! Highly recommend
While on vacation we saw pub from harbour walkway, seemed busy (usually a good sign) right? My wifes fish & chips were ok (quite greasy) my $20 pub steak & onions was basically 65% gristle. When I replied to waiters question as to how everything was I pointed to pile of gristle on my side plate and said what I could find to eat was ok. Waiters response....nothing. enough said.
Take-out order was really good. The burger was a bit dry --- just needed more sauce. Friendly service and they were following Covid protocol.
Fantastic view from the upper patio. Great food. The fish and chips were yummy and the pulled pork was just delishes. The staff were also very good and service was fantastic::::: got to give it a try.
Fast service, short walk from cruise dock. Across street from boardwalk and Chill Grill Ice cream. Fries were very good. Lobster roll was nothing special. Burgers looked good.
