A small gem in LaSalle. Food is very good and quite authentic. Most of it is simple yet prepared impaccably. Today was a quiet night with only 2 other tables occupied, so service was swift but we don't know how they would handle a busy night. Definitely one of the highest quality food in the area. Will go again without hesitation!

Tonight, I had an amazing taste of the wonderful dishes at this restaurant. The food that we ordered were all good. I have to admit that my favourite dish was the sole. The delicate sole full of flavour reminds me of a steam fish. Every dish has its own unique flavour and well balanced. I would say that they had successfully created their umami taste :) I would certainly go back there!

This place has great service, and the quality of the food is excellent. I am always a bit wary of meats served in various formats (rolls, shredded, deep fried, etc.) but Isakaya is great at cooking the diverse food and their ingredients seem fresh. It's totally worth the price, but it's probably not a good spot if you're looking for something quick and cheap.

Having been to Japan and the Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, the standard of sashimi at this establishment is one of the closest experiences to the real deal. For sushi lovers the sushimi platter is recommended. Deep fried oisters, grilled octopus and chawanmushi is a must for entrés. (July 2012)

I live in Lasalle and I tried the Isakaya restaurant for the first time. What a great surprise. The food was delicious and fresh (I've tried at least 12 japanese's restaurants in Montreal and only 3 of them I can say that the food is fresh. Isakaya is one of them). Finally Bistro Isakaya as back. We missed the great food when the Parc Avenue location closed and were excited to try the new location in La Salle. SAME GREAT Japanese Bistro food! Really good authentic Japanese gastronomy. Prices are very fair and portions are generous. The food is very fresh and beautifully presented. Lunch specials for $16 (soup, salad, main and ice cream) are a bargain and are very satisfying. Used to go when they were on Parc ave and it's still as good as I remembered since my last visit 10 years ago.

What an awesome experience I had recently! Now, Izakaya, headed by Shigeo san, is a Japanese culinary institution hors pair in montreal for nearly two decades. Whilst this in and of itself is extremely impressive, what is even more astounding to me is the Omotenashi (Japanese hospitality) that was shown to me during an automotive glitch. What happened was my car's engine overheated and had to be towed from their parking lot. Now, not only did they help with the logistics of the mechanical conundrum, but Shigeo san took the liberty of actually driving me back home! I insisted on taking a taxi, but he had none of it. That shows a level of respect for his clientele that is synonymous with old school Japanese etiquette. After all this excitement we had a chance to enjoy first class Japanese cuisine. Crisis averted, thanks to Izakaya :-)

We were delighted to hear that Shigeo Minagawa had finally opened a new restaurant after having to abandon his long time place on Park Avenue when his lease expired and his rent was due to skyrocket. We had been going there a couple of times a month for almost 20 years. His new place is similarly unpretentious and still serves generous slices of immaculate, flavorful fish over impeccable rice. It's the closest we have in Montreal to a neighborhood izakaya in Tokyo (except for the lack of real wasabi). Side dishes are consistently satisfying (fried burdock root will make you forget about French fries). Everything is as it should be.

this place is amazing! Along with the great food, the service is beyond what I've seen in other places. The chef was really nice and answered all of our questions. A really nice addition to Lasalle's restaurant scene! Just came back and really enjoyed it. The food was great - Sashimi was well portioned and melt in your mouth fresh, udon noodles were a refreshing change (not too salty), and the grilled calamari was excellent! If you're feeling adventurous, try the black sesame ice cream. We had that and the green tea ice cream, both were great. The service and chef team were very good and friendly.
