Possibly Winnipeg's meanest serving staff, which is a real achievement. Standoffish, combative, put off even by the most normal and unprovocative requests. I know working in a restaurant in this town must grate on one's spirit, but it's hard to give money to these people.

Back after a 25 year absence (sic) and it's good to see the same classy place with local art and a busy dining area. It was full on a Wednesday (a good thing) so expect noisier and tighter than most. Food: Classic Italian-based with useful modernizations. Onion soup starter was lighter than usual, a good thing. FIsh tacos, according to my dining partner, were among the best she's had. 6 small, crispy tacos to fit the hand so not overloaded with lap-ruining runnovers. My chef-special linguini, with jumbo shrimp, chicken, pine nuts and pesto in a cream sauce was, as it sounds, somehat overwhelming. Richer and creamier than it needed to be. True, some want an arms race for pasta ingredients, but this dish might be better split between two diners to make room for one of the other starters or the appealing desert menu. Special mention of the extraordinarily good Pinot Gris by Sandhill. If you're torn for a choice of white, take this one.

I took my wife their for her birthday and we couldn't have been happier. We had a reservation for 6:30 and we were seated quickly. A waitress did not come over right away as we had to wait a few minutes. Once the waitress, Bonnie, arrived she explained the hostess did not mention she had a new seating in her area and apologized profusely for the delay. We ordered our cocktails and they arrived less than 3 minutes later. $12 a drink is a bit much but they were 3oz cocktails and they were well made. We ordered the calamari to start and I have to say it is one of the best plates of calamari I've ever had. It arrived within minutes of ordering so you know it was freshly made to order. The breading was light and it was not greasy. The aioli that comes with was tasty as well. I ordered the meaty penned and my wife ordered the bakes seafood penned. The serving sizes were food. Not too big that you over eat. Pasta was cooked al dente and the sauces were very good. The seafood penned could have used a bit more seafood but it was the right amount for the price. We also ordered a bottle of the Celeste 2011 Tempranillo which was very nice. $21.99 at the MLCC if anyone wants to try it! We ordered desert which was great! The pecan pie was on special and it was fantastic. My wife had the chocolate explosion and she loved hers as well. We requested the bill and Bonnie informed us she took care of the deserts ( I hope she doesn't get in trouble for doing that ) because of the small delay at the beginning of our night. That was totally unexpected and greatly appreciated! I highly recommend giving this spot a try. Make a reservation and take your partner out for a nice evening.

One of the best restaurants in the city. We use to live nearby until we had to move and visited often. Brought my parents here for dinner when we were visiting in town and they were so impressed. My dad can be a tough critic sometimes but he was so happy he wants to make it a tradition to go here when we are in town.

Fabulous! If you are looking for a gemstone of a restaurant, head here. The food is full of flavor and nothing is over cooked. I highly recommend the Seafood Chowder and Fette Chili. The Beef Tenderloin was tender and juicy and the Lamb Rack flavourful. If you get a dessert, plan to share, portion sizes are generous. Excellent quality food.

We enjoyed our evening and would definitely return. The food was well prepared and presented. The menu has a nice selection - pastas were perfect! Service was superb; welcoming, attentive, well informed, prompt but not intrusive. Sharing of salad plates was nicely accommodated and attention to details was impressive. A reservation was a must as the place was full and obviously popular. It got a little noisy with conversation as the evening developed - the restaurant is small and diners were exuberant. Prices might seem a bit high at first blush for a "cafe" but are appropriate for the quality and experience. It's a gem!

Cafe Carlo was excellent. They have a hip young restaurant with what looks like local artists paintings up on the wall. The restaurant was small and packed when we arrived which means it’s a popular place. Good for them having too many customers. If I were to dock them on anything it would be that there waiting area is too small. I ordered the fett chile which is there signature pasta dish. They make their own pasta and the sauces were very flavourful it was excellent. The calamari was crispy and well cooked but it had a lot of smaller calamari pieces and only a few normal sized rings but I’m in Winnipeg so how good can I expect the options of seafood to be. They also sell local brew on tap which is a sign of the times with youthful restaurants trying to get away from big company beers. They picked a good brewery that for sure. I would highly recommend this Italian restaurant or cafe whatever they want to call it. Cafe Carlo a gem in Winnipeg that’s for sure.

I was amazed at how great and fast the service was, despite the fact that there was only one server working and half the dining room was full. Decent wine selection, loved my gnocchi, it was pan fried and served on top of sauce, which was a smart way to not lose that fried texture by getting soaked and mushy. Portions were perfect to still have room for delicious cheesecake with sour cherries for dessert.

The best server I’ve ever had in my life BUT the food is not as described on the menu. I ordered the goat cheese salad which on the menu indicates an arugula base. No arugula but a spring mix which was super bitter. I tried the ravioli (bland) and corn/charizo soup (green pepper over powering) from friends at the table and it is very clear you are paying for the atmosphere and not the food. So disappointing to drop so much money on a place after 18 months of not going out and Winnipeg has such wonderful cuisine to offer.

We went to Cafe Carlo on Feb 3, 2018 at 5 pm The server only printed out one page of specials for a table of four to save trees. Although cold outside, the place heats up, especially for servers moving about. To carry more, our server tucked the pepper mill up high, almost in her armpit, on her bare arm. I got a thought of her sweat coating the pepper mill. Oh well. We had to leave by 6:30, so no time for dessert and the coffee was undrinkable. A few problems detracted from an otherwise pleasant experience.

I went to Café Carlo this past Monday to celebrate my birthday with my 3 best friends. We felt completely safe dining here during a pandemic. This would be my third time coming here and it never disappoints. Our server, Bonnie, was absolutely delightful. She really knows how to romanticize the dishes that makes you wish you can eat everything on the menu. I decided to try the popular "Fett Chile" this time instead of my all time favourite, butternut squash ravioli. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu and you are guaranteed to be full after dinner. They also serve this amazing olive butter with bread as an appetizer with your wine and it is simply one of the best things about dining out. If you're out there to support local businesses in this tough time, check this place out.

Love attentive, but not overly so, service and the renewal of the buzz of people. Love all staff are dual vaccinated and they proudly freely communicate it. Food fare is delightful and a solid wine list. Did find the veal sauce a tad heavy on the salinity bled off from the capers more than a heavy hand with the shaker which really overwhelmed -distractingly so- an otherwise beautiful dish. Tenderloin, Caesar Salad done to perfection as was the Apple tempura and Goat cheese appetizer. Portions were fabulous and filling, presentation and plating befitting of the upper echelon of offerings here.

I loved it! We went for dinner to celebrate a milestone and I had the lamb which was fantastic. My father had the veal which he said was one of the best he's ever had, and my mother had a pasta dish which she also loved. The escargot appy was fresh and flavorful, and the flourless chocolate cake for desert was amazing. Not only that but our waiter was extremely personable and very easy on the eyes. If I wasn't with my parents I'd probably hit on her! Top notch restaurant!

They were super busy the second time and with only two servers (making their own drinks too) my glass wasn’t ever less than half full and we were extremely well attended to. This place blew our minds. Being our first visit we came with an open mind, and left with a full tummy. The atmosphere was beautiful, with nicely displayed art, with subtle music in the background. The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about their food and wine pairing. The lighting was perfect and gave a nice romantic feeling, with a homegrown touch. The delivery of the food was on point, never feeling rushed to finish one plate before the next one arrived. The portions, flavours, smells, and taste was out of this world. The staff informed us that all the food is made in house, from top to bottom. There is no mistaking the love put into the food. The prices surprised us at how reasonable they are. For the amount and quality of food one would expect to pay more. We planned on going to Bake expectations for desert. So happy we did not, and had the pleasure of having the in house desert. The desert alone, will bring us back. This is a place we will enjoy again and again and very easily brag about.

We have been going to Café Carlo for as long as it has been on Lilac St, just off Corydon. We made a reservation weeks in advance, thank goodness. The llace is always busy, and rightly so. The food was delicious and plentiful, as always. The desserts ard amazing. Despite it being very busy, our server worked like crazy to keep everyone happy. I look foreard to returning to Café Carlo later this summer.

The staff was excellent. Our son wanted chicken fingers and they tried their best to prepare something as close to chicken fingers as they could. Having said that, the food itself was quite flavourless and greasy. I ordered gnocchi. My husband ordered the fish tacos and our son got chicken with fries and apart from the fries, we all found our dishes very bland and on the greasy side.

Not only was this restaurant accomodating for our last minute arrival, our server Bonnie was friendly and really helped put our experience over the top! The food was awesome from the spring rolls for appetizers to the lamb as well as the canneloni for main course and a strawberry pepper cupcake for dessert! Would highly recommend!

Cafe Carlo used to be one of my favorite places to eat, and is the restaurant that as a child, inspired my boyfriend to become the chef he is now. I decided to take my boyfriend there to eat this evening, boasting that it was the best pasta restaurant in Winnipeg, but the experience I had today was much different from the one I had two years ago. I was seated at 9:30, and a waitress did not come to visit my table, or take our drink order for over 15 minutes. When she did, I ordered a fort garry dark and my boyfriend asked for the house red. When the waiter returned she brought the wrong wine (the house white) in a dirty glass that appeared to have what looked to be a fruit fly in it. She then came back with the right wine explaining how it wasn't a big deal that she gave us the wrong wine initially cause she was then allowed to drink it. When she left we tried to complimentary bread, it was cold and hard, but it was free so we didn't ask for a new, warm loaf. We then ordered the prawns for an appetizer and the seafood penne and butternut squash for an entree. The prawns were very bland, but luckily it came with a vinaigrette that gave some flavor to the prawns. Our pasta was then brought to us, the ravioli was undercooked and tasted like the dough was raw. The sauce was very watery and definitely did not taste great with the nuts. The seafood penne wasn't much better. Something tasted rotten in the dish, and the broken, watery, white alfredo sauce didn't make up for it. Really wish I didn't spend $100 on something that I feel might make me sick. At no point did our server ask us how the food was.

Absolutely wonderful dinner, right from our arriving early and being seated by the pleasant and very welcoming Bonnie. We enjoyed spring rolls, a starter goat cheese and beet salad. My wife had a baby mac and cheese and I gorged myself on a full rack of lamb with rice pilaf cooked to perfection. Ohhh and can't forget, we had a vanilla creme brule and a very nice bottle of French Red wine which was excellent. Recommend this fantastic spot on Lilac Street off the Corydon Avenue "Little Italy" main drag.

I was pleasantly impressed - the food (all of it) was excellent... extremely tasty, great presentation, and timed for delivery at a great pace to fully enjoy each course. The service was pleasant and inviting, and finding out that our waiter was one of the owners allowed for some great conversation and insight into the history of the restaurant. The space seems small but well laid out, and the acoustics is so well done that you can have a conversation without feeling that the next tables are at all part of your group. It was our first visit, but definitely will not be the last.

It's very loud and tables are wide so you cant really have decent conversations. Servers are ok and pleasant but they got all our Bills wrong. First time there ,wont be back.

One of my favorite restaurants. Never let me down. I had different flavors of butter every time, but I will never ever forget the taste of their maple bacon butter, even though I only had once, really hope they can make it more often. STRONGLY recommend. Worth every penny for me.

It would have been a 5 star review except I have only one complaint, the take out package was a very cheap card board box similar to the material a egg carton is made from. By the time I got home the food had already soaked through the carton leaving a big mess.

We were there on October 12th and had great food. Calamari, chowder and two pasta dishes. A couple of nice cold Heineken beers and we were set to go. Bonnie provided us with great service and was smiling, happy and helpful and that made the meal even more enjoyable. I will definitely be going back.

Food was pretty good. I would reccomend the bruschetta and the gnochi! Service cleared out plates quick, and checked to see if we enjoyed our food. However I dont think the waitress was smiling under her mask, it seemed like she might of had a rough day and you could see it while she cleared our table. She also sounded mildly grumpy but not enough to ruin the experiance. Overall enjoyed my experiance and want to come again some day!

My dissatisfaction arises from how our departure from the restaurant was handled. My friend and I were deep in conversation throughout the meal and not tracking the time we had been at table. I don't believe customers should be responsible for tracking this in any case. At about the 1h40 mark, a different server than the one we had been dealing with showed up at the table with a bill. There was no inquiry before this as to whether bills were combined or separate. I also wasn't asked whether I wanted a refill on my coffee. We explained that the bills were separate, the server went away, returned with the bill and the credit card unit and proceeded to take payment. We then departed.

Went here for my anniversary dinner and it alright. It was our first time going and we expected it to be a true Italian restaurant but found out it's more of a clash of Italian and Canadian cuisine. Didn't have the selection we thought it would have. Service was good and food was still good but not that true Italian feel.

The menu is diverse, wine list ample and specials always delicious. It's local and you're made to feel like you are appreciated. Food was bland and disappointing was not worth the price. Apparently they don't wash their hands or use soap to clean dishes so that's disgusting never eating here again. Also explains the stain on my fork. Owner is a real cow, difficult and rude. I do not recommend eating here save your money and go elsewhere. Plenty of other delicious and sanitary restaurants in Winnipeg.

We love Dine About Winnipeg as an opportunity to try new restaurants and new dishes. On Saturday night we went to Cafe Carlo with another couple and had a first class meal. This year the restaurants are offering more choices in the $38 three course meal. We all had the same main course (lamb shank) and it was terrific with a delicious gravy and lentils. The lamb could have been cooked a little longer to be more tender, but it was a generous serving and still delicious. I had the torched salmon for an appetizer and loved it. The salmon was cooked to perfection, so not at all dry, and the edamame beans and yogurt went well with it. The beets and clam chowder appetizers were also very good. The desserts were good but not remarkable: creme brûlée, butterscotch pudding (served in a canning jar), and raspberry concoction. The service was friendly and efficient. We were the first to arrive at 5:30 and when we left at 7:30 it was packed. You must make a reservation for this popular February event. Well worth the price!

We wanted to go for a "nice" meal but did not want to spend a fortune. The service was outstanding, the food choices plentiful, and the portion sizes were more than we expected. Would definitely go back. Seven of us went to celebrate a 40th wedding anniversary. We ordered four different dishes (seafood penne, gnocchi with beef, fett chile and cannelloni) in addition to cocktails, salads and desserts. Everything was delicious; service was excellent. We'll be back.

I ordered take out for a birthday dinner this past Friday and have heard such good things about the restaurant. It was an hour and a half wait for take out (it was a Friday night so understandable) and my pesto gnocchi was all burnt on one side. I can't believe someone would cook this and think it was okay to serve at a restaurant. 2 stars only because the other 3 enjoyed their meals (all fett Chile). There are way better restaurants to get Italian food in the city/the same area and I would not order from here again.

I went with a couple of friends a couple of weeks ago. This was one of the best meals Ive had in the city. I had the fantasy special, which included spring rolls, red pepper pasta, salad, and desert. Such a good deal for a reasonable price. All of my companions were over the moon with their meals as well. The service was very friendly and welcoming. A very nice girl served us. Parking is not great. I do not believe they have a parking lot, and the streets were a bit full. Nevertheless, its worth the walk.

Second time at Cafe Carlo, and each time a beautiful experience! The sauce and the cashews on those brocolli was amazing! And the fried chicken with the pickle and the maple bacon sauce-thing, oh my goodness, it was a new experience! The chicken was cooked to perfection and the sauce was phenomenal, and I think I finally fell in love with pickles after many years and this lifetime of picking them off my plate, out of my burgers and so on. Perfect! Got the seafood penne... whatever... like I wish I could just have this always in my mouth, so I could always be eating it, but... that's not sanitary, and would get pretty pricey as I would have to steal their chef... how could I possibly do that to the world, and my wallet? XD And the Fettuchile..I spelled that wrong, but you'll know if they still have it on their menu, good luck! So good! It was sweet! But pleasantly surprised by it savouriness and balanced flavouring! And I got a apple crumble with oats? I didn't really finish it as I didn't enjoy it that much, but I dare not take off points because my companion loved it! XD I did love and finish off the ice cream though! I ended up getting their chocolate torte to go, and it was freaking delicious..Sorry, no photos, just ate at home and called it a day xD First time was a long time ago, about 4 years? But I am pretty sure I also had a seafood pasta, but focus on lobster and shrimp, and I jist loved it, which is why I wanted to try the seafood penne. My friend got some kind of beef ragoût on gnocchi, first time having gnocchi, so I couldn't forget. So, the fact I still remember that after so long is a testament to the quality of their foodd, and their service! XD Will definitely keep coming back again, and not waiting for 4 years haha!
