Pleasant place to eat loved the main food and dessert.service was great as well. Recommend it.
So I was very excited to try the French after hearing one of my friend's give glowing review. For apps I split the steak tartare and the foie gras, both of which came with toasted sourdough and some side dips. The tartare was good albeit a bit simple, the foie gras on the other hand was not really my cup of tea. For a drink I got the blue gin and all I could taste was the alcohol, I genuinely believe I could have bought gin, added food colouring and achieved a similar result. As for my main I got the duck breast which was generally underseasoned and was served on a green puree which tasted rather like the inside of a smokers lung. The greens served in this dish were really the saving grace, they were acidic in a lovely way that brightened an otherwise bland dish of muddled flavours. Service was a bit stiff and not particularly friendly but passable none the less, they kept my water glass full so that's great! For the price of the meal I do not think I will be returning to the French anytime soon.
Service
Great service and delicious food!! Such a lovely find in Hamilton. This was my second time coming for the brunch and it’s honestly my favourite. They will carefully cater to your allergies/dietary needs, and the food came out so quickly despite how busy they were. Highly recommend supporting local :)
Nice French restaurant on king William. Great atmosphere and the food is really good. loved the steak frites and the tuna nicisoise! Will be back for sure, I want to try the burger! ????
First time visiting "The French" and really enjoyed the experience. The place has a nice cozy and romantic sort of vibe, service was super on point and the food you could tell was prepared fresh with great ingredients! I had the Monkfish and it was Amazing!! Definitely will go back to try other dishes!!
Service
Great elegant vibe with wonderful service - will be going back soon!
Hadn't been to The French for a few years but decided to chance it on my child's 22nd birthday. Just excellent. Great food, service. And they had a nice dessert with a candle ready at the end of the meal. Will go back for sure.
Brunch, lunch, dinner or drinks one of my personal go to recommendations. Excellent culinary and service teams, great dishes, cocktails and ambience at any time of year, whether your warm in the front windows in winter, or sitting on the European bistro patio in summer. Central to everything.
The staff at The French are always so pleasant and helpful. I’m a regular - at least once a week - and the steak frites is my go-to. It is always served at the perfect temperature/cook. Their fries are the best. There’s never anything to complain about. Who could? Big thank you to Irene and staff for making every visit so great.
My husband and I went for our first wedding anniversary dinner and it was absolutely incredible! My husband had the steak and fries and I had monk fish which was amazing. Service was great and the restaurant was beautiful. Definitely recommend
Amazing place to eat.. loved it... staff was wonderful, food was amazing.
Cozy but upscale atmosphere. Wait staff was attentive, knowledgable and friendly. Highly recommend!
Cute place, Great atmosphere, friendly service. The food was tasty and flavorful and it came very quickly. The gnocchi was delicious!
The food here is positively exquisite and comes to the table with impressive speed regardless of the level of business. The roasted chicken practically melts in your mouth and the dessert features are definitely worth a taste, as are the drinks! Beautiful atmosphere, small votive candles are placed on each table as day turns to night and staff are very attentive to detail. Overall, a lovely dining experience that I will be having again!
A great place ! Nice servicing and better food! what else do you want? highly recommended.....
Cozy nice brunch place, good for a get together or a date.
Wow. Made the celebration in our bubble the very best. Can’t say enough about the food. It was simply perfect. From start to finish was fabulous! Devin our server was attentive and polite. The food was outstanding! Will be back again. Fantastic! If you want a good dinner night out in a nice spot head here
Great food & service with a nice wine list
We always come back for the steak and frites, very irresistible ???? we usually have only the steak but this time we ordered a salad Maison which was ok. The waitress was very friendly and checking on us frequently ????????
This is my first review ever online. We had a wonderful time last Friday. Ample parking space, authentic French ambiance, incredible interior decor, friendly waiters, delicious food and a menu easy to understand (beef tenderloin, duck breast, trout, ricotta gnocchi, etc) but very sophisticated. Two entrees + 2 glasses of wine + 2 desserts + 2 espressos = $150. Great quality for the price. 5/5
The brunch was outstanding. All the meals were geat and the waiter was friendly and helpful. All around a wonderful experience.
Really looked forward to visiting this new restaurant on King William and we finally made it for lunch. What a beautiful space. Exposed brick walls, cozy benches and bistro tables in a relaxed atmosphere. Gorgeous bar. Staff was very attentive and the food was outstanding. The housemade butter served with sourdough bread is a must try. We had the mussels, great flavour and good portion for lunch or sharing. Also ordered the ricotta gnocchi that was to die for. Beautifully made and served in a light sauce with mushrooms and shaved parm. Cocktails are well done and creative, along with the usual standards. Looking forward to a return visit for dinner or brunch or just to sit at the bar in what looked like the most comfy chairs ever!
Lovely dinner to celebrate my friend's birthday. Falafel appetizer was great and the Trout was delicious
Lovely restaurant with fantastic presentation and amazing attention to detail. This is the perfect place for an anniversary or special occasion. Both the service and the food were superb!
Beet chevre salad was very tasty, would recommend. Very filling, so it's a nice share plate. Cheese platter was ok. It comes with 3 cheeses, one of which is a blue. I asked for substitution of the blue cheese, instead I received only 2 portions - and the second cheese portion was sliced in half and served to make it look like a 3rd portion They brought out an additional salad + comped the cheese after I pointed it out. steak frites were good, meat was tender. tuna nicoise was good and Drinks were nice - had a rosé and an herb cocktail (cant rem name) Overall, food was good, would return Service was great!
A great French restaurant. Beautifully decorated, and staffed with friendly and efficient servers. Fun environment, good food, and a great wine list. Must visit. The steak tartar was to die for. Must try with a dry amarone.
The food, the drinks, the atmosphere and the service....all incredible. Great for a date night!
I had a great experience with my daughter. Steak Frite was very good. Congrats to the entire team
Amazing food! Very stylish decor and wonderful service. The tables outside in the warmer months are really pleasant and the service outside is great as well. Reasonable prices for somewhat of an upscale dining experience. Great drinks as well!
We always celebrate our anniversary at The French. They cook the best steak in the city and the beet salad is one of my favourites. Total bonus that the cocktails are amazing but we really go here for the service. It is very consistent and every server/bartender we have had is so friendly and makes the dining experience so enjoyable.
Had a great tartare as an appetizer and very good tuna niçoise. Lovely atmosphere and great service overall. Very pricey sparkling water though at $8.

Reasonable price for great tasting good. Simple meals done well. Decent selection of cocktails. Good first date restaurant. Will come again.
Great service. We had the quiche with frites , delicious. Went for a ladies lunch, would recommend.
We loved our experience at The French! From the moment of entry, we were greeted with such warmth and friendliness. Our server Paul provided us with exceptional experience with service and with recommendations for food/drinks. The food was over the top delicious as was the unique cocktails! So delighted to have found this gem! From the service to food to overall atmosphere - definitely a place to come back to!
Understated class, always an amazing dining experience.
Fabulously flavourful food and creme brulee to die for.
The decor and food is amazing! Absolutely amazing! We decided to mix it up a bit, so we ordered the Pain Perdu, Avocado Toast, Frites, and a freshly baked croissant. All of it was exquisite! However, we were ignored for so long at the beginning that we almost walked out. It took a long time to get menus and even longer to have someone take our order. It wasn't even that busy. We literally watched as two servers would clear or help at other tables and then walk past us. Then the service was okay, but slightly chilled. For these reasons, we won't be back. The food and decor WERE AMAZING, but it's Hamilton and 2/3 isn't good enough here.
The water tasted a bit weird, our table was tiny (the waitresses could barely get plates on it), and the dishes were maybe $20 quality selling for $30. The staff were very nice and we were out in roughly an hour, which is much appreciated. My favorite thing in the restaurant was the beer. Not bad, but not good enough for me to recommend it.
The food is always lovely, the steak frites are amazing. We visited this place 2 times now and both times have been an amazing experience. First time we dine at the patio and they have a nice and cute patio so we had a lot of fun and enjoyed the sun. Most recently we dined inside and the ambiance was amazing and the management is always nice with accommodation and all. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THIS PLACE! ????
We have now been coming to the French for around 3 years. This is not something we do often; return to the same restaurant on multiple occasions. Here is the thing about the French. It’s the treatments of proteins and vegetables. The balance of flavour and texture. The wine and cocktail menu. You’re not going to find anything like this elsewhere in Hamilton. If you’re looking for value for your money it is here. Franco-fare done effortlessly, urban, vivacious, warm and current. This is the place you bring people for memories together over delicious wine and food.
Went here on a weekday for lunch and it was great! We got two lamb burgers with fries. The lamb was nicely cooked and the ingredients they use make the burger! The fries are also delicious and are seasoned nicely. Great service, but I know this place gets extremely busy on weekends so make reservations ahead of time. Would definitely go again for brunch (which continues until 3 on weekends), and dinner. Apparently, they are known for their gnocchi and steak frites. Among all of the great restaurants in downtown Hamilton, try this place out!
The food is so delicious. Every single thing we ordered was wonderful. Will definitely be back!
Food was excellent. Fresh. Tasty. Calm atmosphere.
We ordered through Uber Eats and we were not disappointed. My salutations to the chef(s) and staff! ???? We started with their foie gras parfait served with sourdough bread slices, grainy mustard, and some sort of preserve (I think it's a cranberry preserve) and wow, the flavors go very well together. Probably the best foie gras appetizer I've ever had. ????We both had the french onion burger. It has a layer of onion and mushroom jam spread on the bun and it's so delicious. The beef patty is flavorful and juicy. The mustard aioli adds a tang to the sandwich that I really liked and it's all topped with grilled Emmental. It's served with pommes frites with a garlic aioli dip. Let's just say that this is the French-est burger you'll ever have in your entire life. It's a must try. The beef pattie however was well-done and I might ask for it to be medium rare next time I'm there.
Their policy for reservations is to blindly give your credit card information because they'll charge you if you don't show up. Charge you what and for what?! It's a restaurant... If someone doesn't show up, you seat someone in the lineup. Most ridiculous thing I've heard.
I found the food quality and presentation very good. However I expressly requested no pork and was presented with prosciutto atop luke warm eggs. The server offered to remove the pork but not to replace the dish. The environment was attractive but noisy as we were seated beside the hostess desk. The service was ok but some staff seemed rushed and it didn't make for a calm ambience. I had expected more of a refined experience.Perhaps a weekday night might be more pleasant.
... they never disappoint and always deliver on the; service, food & experience!
Amazing service and food. We went for brunch on a Saturday, ordered beet chevre and smoked salmon toast for appetizers & then duck waffle and tostadas. All dishes were very good. The smoky flavor of salmon was 100% on point. Duck waffle felt a bit dry but was flavourful regardless. The poached eggs on the tostadas have been one of the best poached eggs I have had till date! We also ordered the creme brulee for dessert - custard was good but the crust disappointed me a bit - it was thick and bit chewy. Looking to come back for dinner sometime.
The moment you arrive at The French you get the experience of a small restaurant in France. They have a cozy patio for you to enjoy outdoor dining. They also offer takeout. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the Duck Confit Salad, French Onion Burger, Fish and Chips and Crème Brule for dessert. We had a good time, the food was great and the atmosphere was very authentic.
We love this place because it has great vegan options!
This is an excellent place for brunch or to celebrate a special occasion. The menu is creative and elegant, as is the atmosphere and décor. I always feel special when I come here and the food is always spectacular.
Perfect place to enjoy a brunch with your special someone. Warm staff and quick service. Perfect ambience and food. Loved the Latte, egg benedict and avocado toast.
The French is a lovely spot to get brunch! We got mimosas, the croque monsieur and the smoked salmon toast. Everything was delicious. They certainly didn't skimp on the ingredients. Couldn't help but order dessert as well: the chocolate croissant was warm, flaky and filled from end to end with hazelnut spread. Service was excellent - we never went thirsty. All in all, a great experience.
Great food and cocktails! Recommended!
Good service, tasty food. Little hidden gem on King William
Excellent.... the entree was absolutely delicious. I had the gnocchi however the portion was really small and I left still feeling hungry.
Fabulous brunch here today. Loved it!
The food was absolutely delicious. I had a full English breakfast. It was the best one I’ve had in a while. Everything was piping hot. The children had meals off their menu and there wasn’t much food left. The service was prompt, courteous and not over-bearing. would highly recommend The French to one and all.
Breakfast with 4 other people. Everyone loved their meal and the scones were amazing
The food was 5 star all day . Incredible eggs benny , and the hashbrown potatoes were literally cooked to absolute perfection. Back of the house was on point
Food was delicious, the lemon tart was to die for. We shared the sangria which was perfect. It is a bit pricey but it is worth it for the quality of food and great service. I would recommend a reservation, especially on the weekend.
Service venue and food was all very good
Terrific. The French is beautiful, comfortable and tasty enough. The decor, style and service stand out. The servers are professional and the chairs comfortable - there is a lot of glass and the view of the restaurant are engaging. We had a broad range of brunch items. The food is not quite up to the promise of the restaurant design but is nonetheless capably prepared. The baked good lack true French refinement and the egg dishes are merly good as opposed to amazing. The food temperature could be improved by insisting on having the plates very hot before plating - the cold or lukewarm plates quickly cool the food.
It was a most appetizing brunch. All the items were so flavourful, especially the Ricotta gnocchi.
Cool place... nice menu with French flare. Same as the outdoor seating which reminded us of Paris bistros in its unique style. Had the charcuterie baguette and my wife had the moules frites (mussels and fries)... the inside space is also really nice and we’ll definitely go back again...
Great food, great service, nice brunch
This is my second time at The French and definitely not my last! Had a wonderful date here with my husband. Really enjoyed the season cocktail I had ( Chambord Haute Couture) and the Ricotta Gnocchi! My husband had their current Saturday special, the Rack of Lamb! All things were delicious! Service was timely and courteous. We have plans to check out all the Equal Parts Hospitality restaurants.
Service
Good food, nice staff, civid-19-safe seating, more than 2 Meters apart from other guests.
Fantastic from beginning to end. Kate and Devin made it even better than could be expected. Can't wait to be back.
Dinner here is absolutely tasty. Smaller menu but you know that means they can nail the dishes. I have been a few times over the years and have enjoyed everything I've tried. Small, cozy, inviting atmosphere. With friendly and helpful staff. Open kitchen for those who like to see what's going on 'behind the scenes'.
Nice place for a Sunday brunch. The food is delicious and staff is friendly. Mimosa is with freshly squeezed orange juice. The potatoes are one of the best I have tried. However there is an option of salad for healthier choice.
Been coming to The French for a while, it never disappoints. The service is flawless and the food is so delicious. They accommodate you well if you have dietary restrictions. Their avocado toast and salads are so good, plus their main brunch courses are very flavourful and delicious. The food is fresh and made at the spot which is what I love about this place. It’s a cute spot to go with a friend and catch up over brunch.
Food was Great! Service was very good. My girlfriends and I had a lovely time. I would recommend The French to my family and friends.

Always great food and even better service. Thanks to The French for making this my favorite spot in downtown Hamilton :)
Mon dieu! This brunch was delicious! Ordering ahead in the website was simple and straight forward, applied a 15% discount for my first order immediately, and followed the special instructions of "make with love"! This kitchen is a great kitchen. Those crispy potatoes tho. 10/10 would brunch again!

Great food pairings. They know their stuff. Delicious!!
Just made the lunch menu cut off. This is a serious business. Others after us were denied. Food. I had the steak frites. Medium rare steak was a touch under done, and quite sinewy. But also delicious. 9/10. Will return.
Great service and atmosphere. Amazing food!
Fantastic dining experience and delicious food.
The food was very seasonally appropriate and definitely flavour packed! Service was quick and the staff was friendly. Drinks were okay. We enjoyed our time and felt safe with their Covid-19 precautions. I would recommend trying them out!
Super delicious and friendly staff. The interior is very cozy. Good place to go for brunch
Meal type
All the plates re delicious but Cavatelli Pasta is to die for. Umami.
Good brunch menu. $25 prix fix. Drinks r pretty good . Lovely ambience.
Great service, nice patio, good food
I love this place I have eaten both breakfast and supper there and itone of my favorite places.
Was in peaceful Hamilton to get some writing done, decided to treat myself and found this restaurant. The best French restaurant I've been to. Tried Escargot for appetizer and Trout Almondine for main course. Reasonably priced but tastes like Michelin star recipes. Good atmosphere (perfect for dates) and amazing decor. Vicktoria was my waitress and the service was amazing I left a 40% tip. A definite repeat when I come back to Hamilton. To the management: As a foodie who have dined in Michelin star restaurants around the world, I experienced similar taste here for a very reasonable price. Overall great experience. Keep up the good work.
Delicious! A+ service.
Good drink but the food not so impressive . Tasting stayed
Best restaurant for Sunday brunch. Love the atmosphere, decor and great service. The food is delicious and full of French inspired dishes. Pain Perdue, croissant, Pain au chocolate, salmon toast, croque monsieu and so much more.
We went for a celebration with a bottle of wine. Their wine list was quite impressive. The decor was eclectic, clean lines and open environment. The service was impeccable. I ordered the escargot but it wasn’t what i anticipated and didn’t eat it. I would expect to pay whether I liked the taste of how they were prepared or not. Surprisingly the server told me they were going to comp the dish. It was very unexpected. We had a delicious bottle of Amarone. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. We will return to try more of their menu.
Absolutely stunning, the food is a real surprise, every bites you take is flavorful, nicely presented on the plate. ???????? bravo to the chef and the team who keep the restaurant "alive" during covid. Thank you again for the birthday gift with a free appetizer.
One of the best brunch experiences we’ve had! All the dishes were delicious & the service was good, as well. Wish they had a Toronto location. Planning to be back to try the dinner menu!
To be honest, the trout is nothing difference to a careless homemade taste salmon. As for the duck breast, please go to K.W BBQ kitchen and order a roasted duck and you will get a better taste on the duck. Fries worth the 3 stars but not other foods.
Perfect service and absolutely delicious brunch! You can taste the quality in all the ingredients, from the freshness of the cheese to the tastiness of the huge potato crisps. Worth every penny.
Went there this past week and was certainly not impressed (considering the elevated price of the meal). The Frites (fries) were mushy/soft. The Fried Panisse had no flavor and was again soft (i expected crispy). My recommendation would be to remove this flavourless item from the menu. The Tarte Flambee was acceptable. But to top it off, my friend found a 4.5" white thread in her puff pastry (see pic) and a hair in her beet salad. Disgusting. I wont be going back. My friend praised this place but was shocked and disappointed and isn't sure she will return.
Horrible, rude management. Completely discriminated against with a medical exemption. Restaurant Management thought it knew better than my lawyer, I’m completely appalled at the level of rudeness received. As someone who deals with customer service daily, witnessing what I saw here was beyond atrocious. I do NOT recommend this establishment period! If negative stars were possible that’s where I would rate it.
Love love love. Best meal and service I have had in a while. Will be back to try the rest of the menu next time I am in town.
Fantastic French dining. Staff are well trained and fantastic. Food was great.
Came for lunch! Great food! Service was good.
This was such a refreshing experience for us! What an outstanding restaurant, food was amazing and the price was great too! Certainly recommend you give it a try!
Come you will not be disappointed. My boyfriend and I came from toronto and this place is an absolute must. To start we had the oysters, french onion soup, and the harvest salad. All beyond expectations. For mains we has the venison and trout and I was rented to order seconds. We went for an early dinner (5pm) and the place was packed before 6. Atmosphere is perfect and staff is very nice and accommodating. Absolutely going back!
Featured here is the Grain Salad. This dish comes packed with Pomegranate, Cucumbers, Arugula, Orange, Persimmon, Wheatberries, and Avocado topped with a Citrus Vinaigrette. I've noticed the French likes to give incomplete dishes. The chicken is not included with the salad and is instead listed as an add-on. I would like to suggest having the chicken come with the Salad. It works so well! The salad was incredibly refreshing! The Pomegranate and Wheatberries gave it a nice crunch. I appreciated the light amount of Vinaigrette especially because most restaurants like to drench salads in dressing! The salad is cold but did not conflict with the chicken at all. The hot and cold sensations actually provided a nice contrast of flavours.
We went for special brunch which they have only on occasions such as Easter break. This was our first time as a family with three children. The food standard was fresh, well presented, tasted wholesome and delicious. The seating was also very comfortable. The service was great and very polite and courteous, the prices are slightly high for a meal. Overall a nice and enjoyable experience!
You gotta try this place if you’re in mood of good ambience. The food was nice with decent servings. You gotta try their beef tartars. They source halal beef too but you may reconfirm before reservation.
Really nice time at The French! Our service was impeccable, very knowledgeable and attentive. Definite standouts we’re the French Onion Soup and the Duck Confit. Atmosphere was lovely too.
With an atmosphere reminiscent of movie-like fine dining, The French provided food without comparison to any restaurant I've ever had the pleasure to spend an evening's meal. The presentation of each dish was constructed with care only surpassed by the flavors of each delectable morsel. Exemplary work on the part of the staff and a comfortable seating arrangement made a night worth remembering and I shall be returning when next I can afford to spend the well deserved prices set to this fantastic dining experience.
Had a truly amazing experience here ! We sat on the patio and were pleasantly surprised at how private and quiet it was. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We ordered truffle gnocchi and steak & frites. Both dishes were perfect. The wine selection was on par. I would definitely eat here again!
This place is amazing! I went here for valentine day, it was a last minute option, called and booked for a reservation, they got us in. Perfect! When we got there it was busy, but our service came quick and gives our options and let us know what was the special. We both ordered the steak and frites... god it was delicious! The steak, was tender and juicy! Cooked just right. I’ll be back to try more of the menu.
Brunch was delicious a perfect omelette and Tostada Rancheros.
Perfection from start to finish. Lovely staff, romantic ambiance, and the food was to die for. We had oysters with homemade sauces, beef tartar, gnocchi (the best I’ve ever had) and the monkfish which was really unique in flavour. Dessert was a chocolate praline bar with flaky salt and raspberry sauce… so good! They also paced everything really well which is appreciated. Love this place :)
The food was good but the servers had a little bit of attitude and could have been friendlier. I got yelled at for having my mask below my nose when walking to the washroom. I really did not appreciate that. They even said if I wanted to come back I would have to wear a visor.
Very good food and service. Will go again.
Absolutely lovely experience, we had to write a review before we left. We were lucky enough to have Paul as our server and he was nothing short of amazing. Great atmosphere, fresh food, 10 out of 10!
The menú is short but is great. Hope they had more coctails! The Burger was lekker and the staff very friendly
Visited with three guests and had a lovely evening. Knowledgeable staff and excellent food in a great location, what more could we ask for? One of my guests is a particular fan of French cuisine and she was not disappointed! Another person in our party had a number of dietary restrictions and the server was very accommodating and was delighted to answer any questions.
This is my second time here and it had never disappointed. I had oysters, French onion soup and the Duck Breast. My daughter had the Beef tenderloin. Everything was cooked to perfection with an eye for detail and the service was above and beyond!
First time here, with a bunch of eating partners. This place is amazing. Pretty much tried half of the menu, all worth 5 stars. The gnocchi, duck breast and Friday halibut special stood out to us the most, but the appetizers were also amazing.
This was our first time here and we really enjoyed it! Bronwyn was our server and she was really helpful with the menu since we weren't familiar with it. The food and service was excellent so we will definitely return again! I'm glad that we had made a reservation online since it was very busy when we arrived, though.
The French is absolutely amazing. From the service which is impeccable to the mouth watering food, it’s a must! I’ve been going for years now. The atmosphere is classy & sophisticated, and the vibes are great. Whether it’s for date night, dinner, brunch, lunch, a meeting, or after work drinks - it’s the spot!
What a beautiful atmosphere and food. Love the french. Been here first time but everything was at best. Kate is the best server. ????
Absolutely delicious burger! Amazing hospitality! It was such a fun experience!!
Everything that I tasted was well executed, including the cocktails. Personable staff & cosy atmosphere. The fluffiest gnocchi I've ever had.
My wife and I just enjoyed the Beef Wellington for Valentine's dinner. Delectable! The pastry was so crisp the meat so tender and the melange of flavors was exquisite! We so love this restaurant.
Excellent brunch spot, try the duck waffles!
Loved it! I had fhe trout and it was perfect. The service was even better
Brunch
Gem of a place. Great food, service and ambiance. Victoria was lovely as our server, and my duck confit was delicious.
Is a great restaurant if you're downtown Hamilton. Nice place for a date
I had a recommendation to go to The French and have their cheesecake. I was told if you love cheesecake, you have to try their White Chocolate and Raspberry cheesecake. It’s served with graham crumbs, chocolate ganache and raspberry compote. My friends and I had dinner next door and came here for a nightcap. The service was good, the ambiance was cozy and the cheesecake, amazing! I loved the raspberry compote!! Too bad I don’t live in Hamilton, I’d have it more often.
Was asked for proof of a mask exemption by Management. I do not carry any such document on me because as per the by-law that is posted on the restaurants wall, you do not require proof of a mask exemption. I referred Management to what they have posted on the wall, the mask by-law, and she still refused. I offered to show her my inhaler, she refused. She told me she wouldn't serve me unless I masked up to walk 10 steps to our table to then unmask. Absolutely ridiculous. Why post the mask by law if you don't follow it? Food was medicore, service was medicore despite an almost empty restaurant.
The food was fantastic. Nice classy place to go out for dinner.
Nice atmosphere and good food. Great for a upscale casual experience. Friendly and attentive service. One of the better establishments in downtown Hamilton. Would certainly go again.
Just following up from our dinner last night. EVERYTHING WAS FANTASTIC! I have to say, over the past 6 months during COVID, we have tried to order takeout from a couple of local restaurants where much like the French, these are typically places where one would dine in. I appreciate that transferring those fresh dishes into a take out mode is not ideal, and both experiences we had were a disappointment..by no fault of either restaurant really, it's just food that is better served fresh and hot from kitchen to table. Needless to say we were a bit hesitant to try the take out method again! Enter The French:) what a delicious meal all around! You guys really pulled it off! While we would have preferred to dine in, we just aren't there yet. It didn't matter this time though! The quality of the meal was excellent and the outstanding hospitality we received from Irene was one of a kind! What a super nice person! Made us feel like we were the only customers despite it being a busy Friday night! The steak tartare..I have no words! We were apprehensive about trying it but I can tell you, we are coming back for more! Soooooo good! I really enjoyed the twist on the escargot ( one of my favorite appetizers)..I didn't want to share with my husband but I had to because I couldn't stop eating his steak tartare:) Our mains...YUM! My husband really enjoyed the lamb cavatelli- what a great pasta dish! I had the duck confit...I LOVE duck, we make it at home. I was a bit worried when I put my fork into the duck wondering if it was overcooked...NO WAY! it was perfect! I soon realized that the crispy outside has been the same cook that I've been trying to attain at home for months unsuccessfully! :) paired with the hearty flavorful cassoulet, what a masterpiece! Amazing first experience ( and certainly not the last) with the French! Cheers to Irene and the kitchen staff! Very, very well done! Thank you for your help last night, and please pass along our compliments to the chefs! I CAN'T WAIT TO COME BACK!!! stay well everyone!
Good food and a nice addition to the Hamilton food scene. After my second visit I've decided to knock it down to four stars. Each time there were inconsistencies. Our second visit was better. Croissant was excellent, croque monsieur was delicious, but the fries were coldish. Timing was improved this time, our stuff didn't come all at once. Our waitress was very good and attentive. She must've gone on break though as we didn't see her in the restaurant after our food came. Whoever was assigned to our area was not doing their job. No one came by for at least 35 mins. I had to get up for water and the bill, and the waitress from the other side was surprised. Our new waitress may have been the ginger/red haired girl that spent 10-15 minutes chatting to the guy at the table behind us. His date was silent and walked off stony faced. Not very professional. Also, the hostess failed to tell our booking service that we turned up for brunch, and we got dinged. This place could be a solid five if they fixed the gaps. First visit : I started with a raspberry scone and a cappuccino. The scone was exceptional, fresh and just the right amount of mild sweetness. The cappuccino was not great, way too bitter. Next time I'd stick with drip. Next up was an elder flower kir; very nice for the morning. For my main I ordered a croque madame; it was phenomenal. Service was very good. The interior is beautiful. While the food was good, there were some negatives. Firstly, the timing was rushed. We were out within 45 minutes. Brunch should be a 90 minute activity. Our food and drinks arrived very close together, I was drinking my cappuccino with my main and elder flower, so it was all jumbled up together. Second, it was cold where we were seated. We were right in the front at the corner, and the old original wall is not well insulated. This could be fixed with ground heating vents. Also, the cheap Yellow gap filler was prominent, suggesting rushed renovations that detracts from the beautiful interior. It's a new place so these things can be fairly easily fixed.
This restaurant is the one I like best. I go to many restaurants but to this restaurant I keep coming back again and again. The team is very amicable and the cooking they offer is so appetizing. I never decline to have a nice dinner in this place. I recommend this place with pleasure.
Stunning room & decor. Charming service and caring Sommelier. Steak frites was devine with herb butter. Green salad was simple but excellent with ricotta. Duck confit was a fave. Cool location.
We ordered take out and were so impressed! The food was so fresh and well packaged. Everything was delicious!
Amazing food and will be coming back!
quaint cozy amazing service, niche market
What an amazing meal and such huge portions for lunch. The food was expertly cooked. SYLVIA was such an attentive and informed waitress. Our anniversary lunch was enhanced by her attentivemess and knowledge. Thank you all.
This is our go to Brunch place in Hamilton. Fresh produce. Great service and ambience. Kids love it. Slightly expensive but worth it.
Consistently fantastic! Great service & great food.
Fantastic atmosphere and even better food. I got the trout and it was crispy and delicious. My husband got the gnocchi which were light and airy. Highly recommend.
Meal was good. Felt that the servers were rushing us out the door.
A bit of a smaller menu but there's lots of diversity! The Nicoise salad was delicious and tasted fresh, but not very filling so if you're really hungry then I would suggest ordering something else. The gnocchi was really fluffy and the perfect portion. Overall the taste was great and I'm excited to try out their weekend brunch next!
Meal type
Great food (the steak was amazing) and the staff really went above and beyond to make our recent meal special.
Great coffee and lemon tart. Hope the construction site nearby will finish soon.
This cozy exposed brick french restaurant is a must go. Bright interior with open kitchen in the back. Food is fantastic.
Unbelievably rude waitress- After dinner, my friend and I wanted to have some deserts with 20 min left from out allowed reservation time. But waitress didn’t serve us because based on her 20 min wasn't enough for having desert.. i told her, we will finish our desert and we will leave right in 20 min.But she was extremely rude and keep arguing and raising her voice.. she simply ruined our night.. terrible experience
Lovely place for a dinner date. The food was absolutely amazing (stuffed eggplant, duck confit)! We devoured the beet & chevre salad! We appreciated the decor and romantic ambiance. Sarah was a wonderful host. Highly recommend this place!
The French is an incredibly elegant dining experience. The menu is perfectly composed of dishes that are both unique as well as memorable. The palette of who ever designed the dishes is truly a culinary visionary as nothing every touches a plate that isn't divine. It must be said that the brunch vegan crab cakes while not offensive, are completely tasteless. The dinner menu is something that everyone would agree requires multiple visits. Can't recommend it enough.
