Never had a bad experience here. The food is amazing. The specials and steak staples are always delicious. Can't go wrong with either the home fries or baked potato. Parking is available at the lot next door for a fee. There is limited street parking available depending on when you arrive.

We having there a couple times before it's always really nice when you walk in but he wasn't as good normally there's cheese on the garlic bread there wasn't but it was still good and I mentioned one of garlic shrimp and he show me like a a red sauce kind of like cocktail and I said no I just want garlic butter shrimp he said okay well when it came and has a red sauce on it my fiance is going to mention something I just eat it and then complain anyways but he really liked the coffee I had a porterhouse and I had the tenderloin but I don't find my tenderloin had that much flavour but the rice was amazing I got one to go so we pay tipped it was 250 all together so a $60 tip I think that's good but they should really give you a garlic butter shrimp if that's what you asked for and they say they're going to do that I mentioned it two or three times

My wife and I made reservations for our 5th wedding anniversary for dinner here this week. We had never eaten here, and had driven by many times not paying it a second thought. I found it after googling "romantic dinner places in Hamilton" (being the romantic I obviously am...) I want to start my review from the moment of the reservation phone call. The man who answered the phone was kind, courteous, and professional and took my reservation. I told him it was for our anniversary not really giving it a second thought. Upon arriving I had no change for parking and the greeter was kind enough to break a bill for me (Seriously Hamilton can we please start taking credit cards at our parking meters like the rest of the civilized world) before seating us at a romantic little table. This is a reasonably dimly lit restaurant with dark walls and beautiful paintings on the wall. The atmosphere is best described as calm, classic, and romantic. After being greeted by our waiter another man came to greet us. My first thought was that they messed up on whose table this was, but a moment later he extended a hand and just said he wanted to greet us personally. He was the man who had taken our reservation. This little extra touch jumped out in my head. They bring some free appetizers to the table, some warm garlic bread and a plate of olives, pickles, and feta cheese before taking our order. We ordered the bacon wrapped scallops as an appetizer. My wife loves fresh scallops, where as I am fairly indifferent. I did enjoy it however, it was fresh, not overcooked and rubbery and full of flavor. For our main course we both ordered the junior fliet mignon (7oz I believe) my wife had baked potato and I had the rice. When it arrived it came with some lightly steamed vegetables. Broccoli, a shaved carrot and asparagus. The rice was a tomato rice, which I actually don't normally enjoy but I really enjoyed this one, and would order it again. Our steaks were incredible and I would put them in the same category of some of the best steaks I have ever eaten. After dinner I was waiting for a desert menu as I had noticed several nice looking plates moving around the restaurant while we were eating. But before I could ask for a menu our waiter brought us both out apple beignets with ice cream with sparklers in the top. They were compliments of the kitchen on the celebration of our anniversary. The entire experience left us both feeling very satisfied, we enjoyed every part of our meal and the entire dining experience felt very relaxed and unrushed. (Is that even a word?) They are a higher end restaurant on the price scale. The bill with gratuity for two with two glasses of wine came to around 150, which is obviously much more than I normally spend on a night out, however they did have a very attractive looking fixed menu as well at $45 / person that included appetizer, desert, and steak, chicken or fish, so I may sneak back to try that as well. I would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for something a little more fancy and for anyone looking to make a real occasion. Thanks so much guys! We will be back!

What a great place for a date. Come in the door and you get a warm greeting. Walk into the dining room, and have a nice relaxing dining experience. The wait staff were friendly and attentive. Didn't feel pushy. Prices were fair for the quality of food. Which brings me to my next point - the kitchen staff seem to love seafood. Haven't had seafood that good since Halifax. The scallops were perfect, and so was the piece of swordfish I tried. This place is a definite must if you're trying to impress a date.

First time visiting this restaurant, but will definitely go again. Thought it was going to be very expensive but decided to try it because we had a discount with our theatre tickets. For the quality of food, the prices were not out of line. The meals were excellent. Our group had the weekday prix fixe specials which were reasonable even without our discount. One thing I want to point out why I just gave 3 stars because the waiter is kinda rule to us, we understand that we the youngest people there but it doesn’t mean we don’t have money to spend. We call the most expensive dish in menu but problems was the waiter for my table keep ignoring us when we try ask him for water, when we pay he come and talking with different tables than stay there and give us quick conversation, we need to tap print recipe by our self too cause the waiter was too busy for talking.

We have wanted to eat here since moving to Hamilton years ago. With no way to get a babysitter during Covid we finally decided we couldn't wait any longer and got takeout. It's not cheap - but was the best takeout experience we have ever had. Nothing remotely compares. Ribeye was as good as I've ever had in a restaurant, and the salmon was perfect. Cups of candy to finish it off demolished. Can't wait to eat in the restaurant but honestly I don't know how the food could get any better.

Recently went for my partner's birthday and it was an amazing experience. It's a gorgeous restaurant adorned with beautiful artwork and stunning stained glass. The BEST salmon I've ever had. Also highly recommend the escargot appetizer & the Manhattan cocktail, they were divine. Our waitstaff were incredibly attentive, kind and knowledgeable. Truly an unforgettable experience. We found our new favorite celebration location.

It was almost twice the price and not even half as good. This was reasonable enough to be a go to place for steak!

I just had the pleasure of eating at this wonderful establishment. First off the dining area had a very relaxed and comfortable feel to it. All of the wait staff were attentive to not only our table, but every table in there. Our main server (who's name I didn't not get) was knowledgeable and approachable. The menu selection was amazing but what came out I can't even put into words. It was the best meal I have had that wasn't homemade. Everything came out just how we ordered it and fast too. The dessert selection looked good but after that main course I simply had no more room left. Not once after our meal did we feel rushed to leave, even though they were closing in a half hour. The price was more than reasonable for the amount of food and the quality of said food. I cold continue on for pages about this place but I'll sum it up. Hands down best dining experience I have ever had, and it will take something miraculous to beat it. Thank you to the staff and owners for wonderful experience.

We had a celebration dinner on a weeknight and it was really special. The service was amazing; our waiter was very personable and hovered close enough to make sure we had what we wanted, but far enough away so as not to be obtrusive. I had the French Onion soup as a starter and I think it was the best I've ever had. I followed with the Prime Rib and it was perfection. Others at the table tried the Bacon Wrapped Scallops, the Shrimp Provencial and the Lobster Bisque and were very impressed. The other mains were Ribeye and a New York sirloin and the filet of salmon and were equally pleased. Only one of us could manage dessert, but we were all jealous we didn't have room for the freshly made Apple Beignet. Great spot for a special dinner!!

I swear this place could not get any better. We've eaten in the restaurant twice and ordered takeout three times during the lock down, everything was delicious and very well prepared. I was a little skeptical to order takeout (thinking it would fall short) but we were very impressed. Set up our table at home with some candles and with the right ambiance, it was just like being in restaurant (minus the incredibly waitstaff). We'll be back! Can't wait :)

I really like the inside of this restaurant it had a charm about it, the wait staff are amazing the food was very good it is a little pricey so if you're looking for something medium priced this might not be the option for you. I would definitely recommend this for couples or a bunch of friends going out for a nice meal I wouldn't say it is a place for families with small children. I wish l had taken photos. Went for dinner with some friends before the holidays and just now having time to review. The food was excellent as was the service. Surprisingly I had never been there before. It is dimly lit for ambiance so if that is not the environment you are looking for on a specific evening then don't go. If you want a nice atmosphere with a lot of attention to service and great food then it will be a lovely experience. A little cramped especially the bathrooms and access to them but it is an older venue so that should also be your expectation.

This place is amazing. One of the top 3 steak places I’ve been to. Similar to a Zorros in Mississauga or Moishes in Montreal. 1000 times better than the Kegs of the world. This is top notch old school dining at it's a best. My wife and I have been dining here for many years. We hadn't been in a few years but our latest visit lived up to their reputation and then some. The food was absolutley spot on. From every appetizer to both of our mains. Franco and his kitchen staff serve only the finest quality ingredients with attention to detail. As for service you will not find anything like it in this day and age. Very engaging servers who make sure that everything regarding your meal is absolutley perfect. As for the decor we absolutley love it. It's old world charm. I've read where people have used the word dated. For us it's refreshing to dine somewhere that is classy, not ultra modern and is a throwback to the past where times were far more simpler. If it's not for you then go dine at a chain restaurant where the food is subpar and the service is non-existent. My wife and I will gladly take your seat. In fact we are heading back tonight after a wonderful experience just two days ago. We can't get enough of what we deem a definite five star experience.

Shakespeare's was one of the best eatery we have been to in a long time. My wife and sister took me there for my birthday. The minute you walk in you get that close family feel kinda vibe. Our waiter Gino (and as he said..like the Pizza ????) was very attentive and great with the jokes and quick wit. Food was superb and worthy of all the awards they've won. We loved every bite from apps starter to the end. Great fine dining experience and surely would love to go back. 5 stars all the way!

This place is my favorite steak place in Ontario. The food is always amazing. I've been here about 5 times and each time I stop by the food is always great. The service is grade A as well. There is no bar and there are no tv's so this is a place to be at if you're with someone who can carry on a conversation over the great meal.

What is a casserole? A delicious little pile of secrets. It's a nice little space. I wish they would update the decor, but perhaps "Passed down from generation to generation" is the idea here. It looks like the tables were used backstage at the Grand Theater. Overall, fantastic salads, chipper salmon and a good volume level to the music. One thing I'm getting tired of seeing is restaurants with blisteringly loud music playing. I'm eating with my family, I do not need to hear Phil Collins' music from Tarzan on volume 18. So good on you, Shakespeare.

This was such a great night out! I went here with my family and our server Louis (Lou-ee) had us laughing all night! He was knowledgable, helpful and took the time to explain all the drinks and walk through any questions we had with detail and description. It really made it so enjoyable. Also Fraser gave us a run down of all the fantastic art in the building which is all based on Shakespeare plays and the history of this building too. The service was amazing as the servers all worked well together, food was stellar and the ambiance was great! I read some reviews about silly things but treat people right and they will always reciprocate and the interior is clean and quaint. I'll be coming back :)

It's our new go to. It has the ambience of The Old Mill in Toronto - which both my sister and I love. The staff are just fabulous, knowledgable, warm and welcoming. The food was delicious. Just loved the whole vibe of the place. Old world charm. Highly, highly recommend. And a great selection of fresh seafood.

This may be a lovely place to go if you've got a lot of time on your hands... We waited 15 minutes to order drinks, and about 20 more (and several attempts to flag down our waiter) before we were able to order food (at which point drinks were done, but he disappeared again before replenishment could be forgiven). This may be acceptable were the food absolutely spectacular, but alas... I'm not sure what sauces they're cooking up in the back, but the bearnaise tasted like a not-so-subtle blend of lemon and aluminum. It was sent back, though there wasn't even the faintest hint of apology. Hamilton has an incredible emerging culinary scene... Perhaps it's time for this "old gem" to be retired or revitalised by new management... Either way, we shan't be returning.

This restaurant is one of few restaurants I've found in the GTA where the true fine dining experience is cultivated. The service is fondly reminiscent of the 1960s fine dining experience whereby a glass is never less than half full and french table side service is standard. The food is a taste explosion in itself. While there is a wide selection of carnivorous and peskatarian delights the beef is a definite must have for a variety of reasons. Only american, aged, certified black angus is used, (yes, I have asked) and it is cooked to true perfection. One of few restaurants that can cook a steak black and blue and as such this reviewer prefers to indulge in the bone-in rib steak. It is not for the faint of heart and the half I take home typically serves as my morning after steak and egg indulgence. If it is a special occasion and you are lucky enough to visit during the winter season then the Stone Crabs are a very special treat. Their size, flavour and delicacy make them a rare treasure. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the owners, Franco and Nicole, who are the founders and original owners of the restaurant since it opened in 1969. Their pride of ownership and love of food, along with their French and Italian heritages, have made and ensured that Shakepeare’s Steak and Seafood fine dining restaurant is the rare treasure that it is today.

We were here to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Shakespeare's. I have been enjoying this restaurant for 50 years. I have celebrated birthdays, Valentine's days, and just getting together with good friends here. The atmosphere, service, and food are amazing. Franco and Nicole and their family make you feel so welcomed. I was there twice in one week. First with six dear friends and secondly with a group of 17 friends. Everyone raved about the food and one couple who own a very renowned restaurant said the steak was the best they had ever had and would definitely make the trip back here. A wonderful restaurant!!!

My husband and I were there last night Dec 28th to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the night we met. This was my 1st time at the restaurant. I like my steak well done but our amazing waiter Daniel suggested the Ribeye cooked Med/well and promised I wouldn't be disappointed. Well he was right my steak was cooked to perfection. My husband had the Fillet Mignon which was also cooked to perfection. We ended with tea and coffee as we were too full for dessert. While paying the cheque the waiter brought a huge class dish full of jelly beans, Jube jubes, hard candies and mints with a small spoon for you to have as much as you want. Thank you for an amazing evening!!!!

This review is 5 years late but I just remembered the restaurant and had to post. My husband was staying in the hospital but we were able to leave and so we went out for dinner. He was using a wheelchair, and his leg stuck out because of the brace on it. The cheerful and kind manager was extremely helpful in us navigating the double doorway. Even though we were dressed VERY casually, it being summer, we were treated as well as any other diners. Also, the steak was one of the best I have ever had, and the fresh-out-of-the-oven garlic bread was heavenly. We still remember it 5 years later.

I took my bf to dinner and it was a lovely dinner but the waiter we had forgot to bring our bottle of wine. We waited about 20 min before he realized he forgot it. He came back shortly before our dinner and dropped everything in his hand the plate hit me but I did not complain. We requested a different table because we had a large group next to us and could hardly hear eachother he was reluctant to move us but the decided he would since we were the last reservation there were numerous tables left. I would have liked to give 5 stars but due to the service I have to give 4. He was very nice but extremely clumsy and forgetful.

The little starters that come complimentary were a good starter for us. We had the sea bass with baked potato. Dressed tableside. And the buffalo tenderloin. Both amazing. Because it was our Anniversary they served us a complimentary dessert of Tiramisu. We finished with a boozey coffee and decaf cappuccino. And of course i had the chocolate mousse. Best I've had out ever. Beyond satisfied by both the service and the food. Highly recommended. Give it a try.

I have been to the restaurant several times, always a great experience. On Jan.18/2019 it was awful. We arrived at 5:20 PM one other person in the restaurant ,we get seated beside him, he had a wine stand beside him. The old creep fell asleep then woke up knoking the wine stand towards my wife splashing her with ice and water, old creep looked up never said a word. A few waiters came over looked at what happened and left. Twenty minutes later they cleaned it up . The food was so bland no flavor, the only good thing was the garlic bread. We spent $ 121.00 for that lousy meal ,that's my last time there.

The food was on par with Lord Nelson, Lord Byron etc. The evening went well and the service was good. What really upset me about this restaurant was that apparently during some point in the evening the terminal for credit/debit went down because of a storm outside which I admit is something that is difficult to control. No problem because I saw an atm at the door on the way in. Wrong because this had not been working for some time. I felt bad for the waiter it was not his fault and realizing this I was trying not to be frustrated. I asked if I could speak to the manager because I was not sure what to do at this point as my bill was in the $300 range and I did not have this much cash in my wallet. The waiter made his attempt to speak to the manager which I understand if this is a panic situation and he had to notify everyone in the restaurant of the issue or was trying to rectify it with the merchant company than it is understandable that no one would have a moment to speak with me. However he was casually addressing a waitress leaning on the bar and seemed to brush off the waiter who was trying to express that I needed to speak with him. Also from the looks of it no one in the restaurant knew this was going on even when people were coming in no one was being told. The waiter looked extremely stressed and I really felt bad for him I said not to worry I am not upset or mad I just need to know what you think I should do. He thought about it and reluctantly told me that a gas station is one block down the street and they have an atm. This did seem to be the only option as the manager had not left his leaning position at the bar yet. I said okay no problem I let my mother stay at the table while I ran across the street in the rain got the money and came back. I still tipped the waiter he did his best and it was not his fault. The waiter said the manager ended up telling him to let me know to call and speak with the owner the next day. I gave that a shot and never did here a response. It was an unfortunate situation because had the night gone smoothly and I could pay without my suit being ruined I would have given them a good review. But its fair to say its how you deal with problems when they arise that separates you from your competition. I am really sorry I had a bad experience however I do stand by the quality of food and the waiters service.

We went for my birthday and we were seated at our table when a lady ftll into our table. Our wine and water was spilled on us and our table. The waiter didnt even change the table cloth yhat was dripping wet. He just put another one over top. We were disappointed when the waiter wouldnt change it because it was dripping on my wife throught the meal. The manager never attended our table to see if we were ok and if there was anything he could do for us. The water and wine spashed on my wifes purse and jacket. They were supposed to bring a dessert out with a candle on it for my birthday that my wife had pre arranged and this didnt happen. I would not recommend this restaurant to my worst enemy. The calamari was oily. Our steaks came out and they were cooked wrong. Their desserts are over priced as well. Creme Brulee was $15. If you read this post you will see Overt rarely complain but this needs to be read by the management and the waiter should be trained how to better serve his customers.

My husband and I had dinner here this evening and were extremely impressed. From the coat check at the front to the wait staff, everyone was very attentive. Food is priced in accordance with the high quality of ingredients, and is worth every penny. I haven't experienced such a delightful culinary experience anywhere else in Hamilton. We would highly recommend the French onion soup, octopus appetizer, filet minion as well as the Buffalo. Meat was so tender and cooked as we specified (always a bonus as no where seems to cook medium rare correctly) We will definitely be back! This is the second time my husband and I have been there service is good at First then if it gets slightly busy we always get ignored just cause we are not dressed to the nines . This just goes to show they do judge a book by its cover. Little do they know I'm a great tipper and I have been in fine dining restaurants since I could crawl . My uncle in a restaurant critic and this was completely unexceptable. As for the food .. even the bread wasn't warm , the escargot was served and eaten then the bread that goes with it was served. I said something so they brought out garlic toast burnt . My cut of steak was awful3 tasted gamey ..and it was a filet mignon. All in all u will not ever dine here again.

Upon walking in you’re greeted but the sweetest, attentive hostess, her kindness brought a smile to our faces. Our server Danny was impeccable he really made our dining experience phenomenal, he was attentive, funny and an absolute delight. And the other sever who assisted was fantastic. The staff are genuinely amazing and I am beyond impressed by the quality of service. The food speaks for it self, the array of delicious entrees and appetizers make it difficult to choose, but everything we got was incredibly delicious. We had the oysters to start which was mouth watering. We followed up with the chicken parmigiana and the gourmet burger 10/10. Compliments to the chefs because our food was amazing! One of the best steak I’ve ever had, cooked perfectly at medium rare, tender and juicy, good quality of meat. The server is very nice and patient, gave me a great advice on picking the wine, which goes great with my steak. I had the tiramisu as my dessert, it’s the most traditional tiramisu I’ve found in Canada so far. Overall experience is perfect, it is a bit more pricey, but I think this restaurant worth that price. Will definitely go visit again shortly.

Top quality service and food. From the moment our group of 10 were seated until the last cup of coffee everything was perfect. Service was phenomenal, the environment was perfect and our glasses were always full. Each course came out and delivered a great reaction from everyone. Apps and Mains came out fresh and hot and the variety of drinks we had made everyone happy. Great job, thanks for taking care of our group for our Staff Christmas party.

A wonderful dining experience!! You are waited on hand and foot!! Garlic bread is the best I have ever eaten and they bring you plenty of it. Steak was perfectly cooked!! Steaks were fabulous and the vibe of the place was old and unique oppose to a modern steak house. Before your meal the meat is brought out to you and you’re educated about the piece of meat. This experience alone makes sets this place apart from many others.

Dined at this restaurant a few months ago for the first time in a couple of years. Very good, but not exceptional food at somewhat inflated prices. Seems to cater to ultra-rich regulars who enjoy being pampered by sycophant servers. I noticed a local lawyer and his entourage at an adjacent table being treated like royalty as we languished patiently at our table waiting to be acknowledged. Sorry I wasn't wearing a $2000 designer suit and openly counting out $100 bills from multiple wads of cash stuffed in my pockets. I'm sure that would have gotten us some more positive attention $$$$$$$$.

Very quaint and romantic. Great steak. Friendly staff with long experience in wine and dine. Honest when it comes to a mistake. We also ordered fish and it was not fresh. They did not hesitate to offer us a substitute for the mistake and offered a free desert. This is very refreshing in a time where customers are often times marginalized. Family run so their reputation is still very important to them.

We had a great dinner last night, curbside pick up, ate at home, missed being in the restaurant but the service and food presentation were excellent. New York Striploin was cooked to perfection, the gourmet burger was so good that I didn't even get a chance to try it before my daughter ate it all! We were excited to try the chacuterie board and it did not disappoint, everything was fresh and delicious. We are already looking forward to ordering again!

It's also pretentious, it's an old building, the decor and the staff are the same as they were in the 80s and the waiters are so snobby that sending your food back because it's not cooked properly is taken as a personal insult to the whole restaurant. Everyone should probably go at least once, but bring lots of cash

Anglo-French cuisine with very solid recipes and well cooked dishes. The service is hospitable, polite and funny. Thank you, Peter - we had a great time. They offer a good selection of wines and meats, for prices that match the high quality, and yet not excessive. Many Gluten-free options without compromise. Recommend the shrimp cocktail, the filet combo, and mousse. Less liked the cheese curds as potato topping.

Just the fact that they've been there 50 years should tell you it's an amazing restaurant They've won several awards throughout the years & have many major stars going there when they're in Hamilton. I've heard Martin Short talk about the Shakespeare several times on television. A few times on the Late Show. The food is out of this world. They buy the best meat & the service is the best. Franco & family have done a fantastic job over the years maintaining a high standard of quality & service & if you go there once you'll see what I mean I've bee going there on & off for over 40 years & have enjoyed every experience. Place was nice waiters were good until my girlfriend complained about her food. She didn't think it tasted right. I tried it also and thought the same thing. She told the waiter that it tasted off. The waiter then shrugged his shoulders and said what do you want me to do about it. Then asked if she's ever tried it before and she said no. Then he said there you go and walked away. Didn't offer us another plate or money back or even a free dessert. Very disappointed in the way he handled it. Wouldn't go back there again. Especially for the price of everything too.

I went to Shakespeare's Friday for my retirement dinner with my boss and co-workers. Had a great time! For starters I had the caeser salad which was very tasty and the rest of my party had escargot, feta cheese and of course the garlic bread.Which we all enjoyed. For the main course we had filet mignon with baked potato,rack of lamb with mint sauce,garlic mashed potatos,chilean sea bass and a 12 oz New York Striploin. All the dishes were cooked to perfection. The meal was accompanied by a fantastic bottle of wine which was suggested by our waiter Peter who went above and beyond making my night very special. We couldn't have asked for anybody better! We were never rushed and were allowed to enjoy each course at a very relaxing pace. The meal was fantastic and well worth the price. In fact we were so full there was no room for dessert! This is definitely our go to place to celebrate any special occasion. The atmosphere there is perfect and would recommend to all...
