Amazing food and good service. First time i've ever eaten sushi without wanting to put soy sauce on it (and felt really full after eating it). Heartily recommend the "crazy girl" sushi. Deep fried california rolls with cream cheese and jalapeno.

Gotta say, the service here was perhaps the BEST service I've had at any Japanese restaurant in Victoria. Kudos to Sushi Story for their service. The food was overall pretty good but just a couple of things. The rice was just too soft and the rice they used with the Chirashidon was NOT sumeshi, meaning they didn't and any rice vinegar to the rice which is definitely a necessity for sushi and Chirashi. The volume however was fantastic!! Lots of food and the price was really great. We left the store happy and full but wished that they had used sumeshi (vinigered rice) in the Chirashi and wished that the rice was not mushy. Will we go back? Probably, but hope that next time they will make better rice.

We are here from out of town and based on someone else’s review who gave a low rating because of the sashimi slices being too thick is exactly what made us want to come here. I don’t know why someone would complain about having thick sashimi slices. I don’t go to eat sushi to taste their soy sauce, I’m there to taste the fish, so I’m not sure what this persons problem was. Nevertheless, the rolls are fresh, the portions are ideal, very affordable and most lovely service. Tempura is tasty, and large vegetable portions. We came back again after trying another sushi spot in Victoria, -and we were MUCH MORE impressed with the service and food at Sushi Story. Looking forward to coming back!

*EDIT 07/24/2019* Changed review from 4 stars to 1 star. Sushi story is a joke. I have placed pick up orders twice and spoken clearly and precisely as to what food I wanted. BOTH times they have gotten my order wrong and forced me to drive back to get my correct food remade. They apologised but I don't want an apology. I want my food made correctly the first time, not to have to get back in my car and drive back there a second time, wasting my time and money. AND I tipped both times expecting it to be correct. I will NEVER go back to this restaurant again and I hope they go out of business or fire the idiot who is taking orders wrong. DO NOT GO HERE and do not support a business that clearly does not care about their customers. ---- Previous review. Re-reading it now it still tells of how their quality control is abysmal ---- When we came for dinner the restaurant was packed. The food came in a very reasonable time (the amaebi at the end took quite long though but the waitress came back to tell us it was defrosting). They gave us complimentary spring rolls before our main order came which was very nice. The miso soup was flavoured with mushrooms and was very tasty, a nice change from the standard style. My dinner bento was gargantuan. The chicken and tempura wasn't very hot but the dynamite roll was good. It had yam tempura in it, which was nice. I was blown away by the ebi sunomono that came with the bento. It is very rare that you get a sunomono with a bento and are usually a $5-$8 side dish. This one was excellent and very large. Overall, I really enjoyed my dinner here and will definitely be back to sample more dishes. It's not the most extravagant sushi in the world but the value for the quality of the food is apparent. I would recommend visiting for sure.

I believe the meal we got was a little over priced, so only 4 stars from me, but during this time when the government is wildly over reacting to a flu bug, I can understand needing a bit more money to make up for the ridiculous protocols setup by the government to destroy small business. As far as the 1 star rating given by another customer because the cook wasn't wearing a mask, probably the most childish, afraid comment i've ever seen. Some people are excempt from masks and when they are by themselves in a kitchen who are they going to infect? Give your lefty head a shake you cancel culture reject. Thank you Story Sushi......

Positives: There are a lot of unique sushi options including the standard sushi fare, so there is something for everyone. The service was excellent and the staff were kind. Negatives: I found the miso soup to be quite salty. I also felt that the oyster motoyaki was undercooked because it had a squishy, raw texture which did not mix well with the motoyaki sauce. The wait time for the food arrival is quite long, but if you patient it should be no problem.

Terrible customer service today. Called 31 times to make an order for three simple rolls. Put in the order, they said it would be one hour. That's fine, it's my son's 9th birthday and this is his favourite sushi, so we thought it's worth it. We wait the hour, are starving, get there, and they LOST THE ORDER. So, they say they can't rush it or do anything - too bad for us! So yeah, then had to order sushi from somewhere else not wanting to wait another hour (what if they lose it again). Anyway, I used to be a regular here, but their customer service is not what I thought it was if they take ZERO steps to correct a mistake. Like, why make us wait another hour, why especially when we tell them (after their mistake) that it's for a child's birthday.

Awesome sushi . Great prices. Great combos. Servers are super nice but sometimes are slow to take orders or give you the bill. They always give free tasters at the start and some fruit at the end of your meal. Also they have a loyalty card and can get free food every 5 purchases or so

We go out to eat sushi a lot- it's our go-to cuisine when we eat out. We've tried most sushi restaurants in Victoria (and there's a lot!) and Sushi Story just knocked Ebizo out of our top spot. The staff are great, everyone stopped what they were doing to welcome us and say good-bye. The food is delicious and even better- reasonably priced. There's lots of seating so we didn't have to wait for a table. I honestly can't think of a negative to say about the place. Give it a shot, I really like this place.

Service was enthusiastic and professional. I likes theie covid precautions. I found the Karage dry, hard to chew and warm at best. Not the style and quality that is acceptable to common standards one would come to expect from a decent Japanese restaurant. The rice for nigiri had a bit too much vinegar as that vinegar flavor ingered long after the last bite. Sashimi was unremarkable at best. Their Sake game was weak. I ordered a bottle of Junmai Sake and they brought the bottle to the table and left...not asking if i would like to chill it on Ice. If it was a Honjozo maybe not, but it was a junmai and a chilling it needed. Not my worst experience but a 7 out of 10 for sure. I guess when you are one of a few Japanese restaurant in the area ones expectations are limited...kanpai

Used to love this place, had such a sweet little restaurant feel, and all of the wait staff knew us because we came here so frequently. My fiancee thought it was so cute his sushis was served to him in a little boat, they used to give you little appetizers before your meal and be on top of everything, recently though after renovations and upgrades it seems they're trying to appeal to a higher class audience. And the waitresses seem to be all over the place. Slowly becoming not my favorite spot anymore... Disappointed

Not your father's miso soup, for sure. Mildly spicy and very satisfying. The sashimi was very fresh and the sushi had just enough rice. The beef teriyaki had just enough sauce, so it wasn't smothered in it. Friendly owner, enough parking and convenient location. Will keep coming back.

Surprisingly delicious sushi at a fair price with really nice and attentive staff on hand. Their agedashi tofu was spot on and I really enjoyed the spicy fried tuna roll and the yam tempura avocado roll. The bento box sets were also generous in size. Recommended!

The sushi at shushi story is really good it is one of the few places i enjoy going for sushi. There is a bit of a language barrier with some of the staff bit they are friendly and work through it. I appreciate the samples they give out while you are deciding what to eat it a pleasant surprise every time. I highly recommend it this place.

We had a variety of dishes - Agedashi Tofu, Pork Gyoza, Prawn and Yam Tempura, Sushi and Pork Katsu. The meal came with Miso soup and a salad. We had no complaints at all. I won't have to venture into downtown Victoria for my Japanese food cravings. Yay!

Read so many positive reviews on the Esquimalt Community Connection Facebook Page that I decided I would take one of my BFF's out for her birthday dinner. Took my 10 year old son too as he loves Sushi. We received a small complementary appetizer each. Then ordered Sake, I had The Monkey Brains and they were absolutely amazing. My BFF had the Teriyaki Chicken Bento Box, not only did it come with Miso Soup, but also Suonomono Salad, and a very plentiful Bento Box. She had to take food home. My son had the Red Dragon Roll, and I had the Black Dragon Roll. Wow, so much food. My son had to take some of his home too. They were short staffed, and we learned this after our meal that they were short two chefs, but it was well worth the wait! We'll be back!

Great Sushi and Japanese entrees. My family likes the Bento boxes, Katsu and the "Monkey Brains"! Each meal includes a complimentary appetizer (usually spring rolls) and a small piece of fruit for dessert. We usually have Green Tea but they are licensed. They offer a variety of beverages including Sake and Japanese beer. Service is prompt and welcoming. Relaxed environment great for adults and children.

COVID-19 Safety requirements are ignored by the chef. I am a long time regular customer and never before have I had a negative word. No longer will I set foot in this establishment. I sat down today expecting the excellent service and food I have become accustomed to. Ordered my meal and then noticed the chef, the person preparing my food and the food of the other patrons, not wearing his mask properly. Wearing it on your chin or under your nose is not acceptable. It is disrespectful and illegal. My health, although obviously of little concern to Sushi Story, is of great concern to me. As I told my server, whom did not seem concerned at all, every other patron in earshot put down their chopsticks in horror and stopped eating. The food is delicious, the consequences of catching COVID-19 from the careless actions of a restaurant could be deadly.

Very good Japanese food, the restaurant is run by Japanese immigrants so the food is actually quite comparable to the food I had in Japan. There can be a bit of a communication issue due to English being a second language for a lot of the servers, but they are extremely polite and very kind.

Very quick, very fast service. Restaurant decorated contemporary and clean. Food came out so fast I'm sceptical that it wasn't pre-made. Gomae salad was not the standard I'm used to. Had iceberg lettuce included. Monkey Brain was excellent. As was the spicy tuna and red dragon roll. The chicken teriyaki had a really nice crust on the outside from being pan seared first.

This is truly a gem in Esquimalt! Had the monster lobster roll (absolutely amazing plating job by chef), monkey brain, miso, Cali, GoGo roll, and appy sashimi. Don't let the location or decor fool you. It is one of the best spots for sushi in town. Came here for Father's lunch. It was fantastic. Super fast service. Friendly and attentive staff. Food is excellent but the service is horrendous. I have gone there about 10 times and everytime it was like pulling tooth and nail to get someone to fill up tea or take our order but everyone around us was served and order before us (even people who where seated after us). Not to mention they now have put call buttons on the end of tables, in my opinion if your servers can't check on customers properly without needing to be buzzed then you should get yourself new servers. I would not recommend this as a eat in restaurant but a pick up and take home type restaurant. Like I said service horrible but food was spectacular the chef definitely knows what he/she is doing!! I loved the presentation and the flavours were tremendous! I hope if you go to dine in you get a better experience then I have.

This is our local go-to Sushi places. In the Victoria market Sushi is everywhere so being a stand out is a big accomplishment. The service is excellent for eat in and we typically have to call ahead about 20 minutes for take out. My personal favorite is the Crazy Boy (deep fried California) which is ridiculously cheap at $5.95. Other places make this a ‘premium’ roll at $7-10

Delicious but we had an issue with them serving gluten. They serve barley tea and didn’t tell us. One of the members in our party with a gluten issue - soon became ill and couldn’t eat. We had thought the tea didn’t taste right but when I inquired discovered they serve barley tea! ...which has gluten. We thought it was green tea that tasted off. He said if you want green tea you had to request it. I said the default should be green tea. The food taste good to the rest of us but put a damper on the evening especially for one in our party. We were not compensated at all. The service was good and fast. Prices were great.

My one experience here was great! If you've ever been to nearby Victoria Sushi, the menu seems quite similar although I think that Sushi Story is slightly cheaper. Great service and very quick as well. It's a quieter part of town so I'm guessing the service will usually be fast!

Menu is very large which can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on perspective. Service was somewhat uneven but they were very busy so that can be somewhat forgiven.

What I ordered: tea, Miso soup, Bara Combo (Kappa roll, california roll, yam tempura roll), and prawn and yam tempura. The miso soup included the usual miso base and cubes of tofu but also had some Enoki mushrooms. This raised my expectations for future miso soup experiences. The rolls were filling and presented on a little boat dish and I was extremely impressed by the tempura as the yams were cut at the perfect thickness and were hot and crisp when they arrived at our table. Our server was attentive and friendly, and the atmosphere of the restaurant was comfortable, spacious and clean.

Great to have a neighbourhood Japanese restaurant for when you'd rather not slug it out downtown for parking. Victoria Sushi at the Westside Village used to fill that bill but service has gotten downright rude that I've stopped going. Service at Sushi Story, on the other hand, is always polite and friendly. The food isn't great, but it's good, and certainly no worse than at Victoria Sushi. Prices are reasonable.

Bento boxes are delicious, large portions and a great price. Service is kind, accomodating and quick! Not as many gluten free options, but I appreciate that they take the allergy seriously and waiters are knowledgeable about the contents of each dish.
