Classic Québécois poutine. Been trying to find a place like this after living in Montreal for a year and getting addicted. Definitely a sloppy poutine, so if your looking for crisp fries with light gravy and some curd- maybe this isn’t for you. But to me, this is the traditional sloppy diner poutine, and I love it. The fry / gravy / curd ratio is on point, and the old (kind of run down) environment adds to the beauty of this simple meal. 5/5 don’t change.

My friend makes a long trek across town to get his poutine here and brought me along. I had the poutine with pepperoni, green bell peppers, and mushrooms (and cheese and gravy of course). When we arrived there were ~ 30 high school kids doing their yearly trip to La Belle Patate. Our order was still taken quickly and all the ingredients were fresh and amazing, and the poutine was delicious. The owner was super nice, as was one of the staff members we spoke with. Don’t expect a fine dining experience, it has basic fast-food decor and you order at the counter.

Destination dining for poutine: that's not something I ever expected to write, but there it is. La Belle Patate is fantastic. The fries are cooked a deep golden brown, the gravy is rich and the curds are generous. The shop itself isn't anything special, but it's serviceable. There's a little bit of seating, but you can get your order to go anyways. If you're in need of a comfort food fix, try this place and I'll bet you'll leave satisfied.

They charge 6bucks for welfare cheese on welfare bread with 2 broke ass strips of bacon on it. I watched 3 drug deals while i was there for 5 minits waiting and one of them was involving an employee. Food SUCKS! Will never go back.

Hands down the best small business on the south island. Mat (the owner) is one of the friendliest people on the planet, and his menu truly is a taste of home for those of us that moved out west from Quebec. His burgers are incredible, his poutine is THE ONLY poutine I've had in BC that tastes properly done (Belle Special is probably my favourite) and his steamed dogs are perfect in every way. Go ahead and support a local business who takes an active role in the community. You wont regret it.

Legitimate Canadian poutine experience. Real ingredients, nearly everything from scratch or authentically sourced. Despite this, the prices are good and the portion value is, too. Rare in Victoria! Vibe in the shop is down to earth, informal, and “come-as-you-are” genuine. Staff are friendly, helpful, and quality conscious. Excellent choice if you’re looking for a good eat.

Went here tonight to order some poutine. They have this cooler in the customer area that I assumed had drinks in it because they have all these posters for drinks above and around it. I take a peek inside and there wasn't. Big guy behind the counter yells at me like I'm trying to steal from him or something. Then he grills me again when I place my order, "what were you doing in our freezer, bud?" Give me a break, why even have it out there in the first place? There's no sign or lock on it or anything to indicate i wasn't supposed to touch it. And your first instinct is to yell at me? This is the last time I come here, thats for sure. There's no excuse for this level of rudeness to customers.

The next time you come through Esquimalt be sure to stop by this gem of a restaurant. Classic poutine done right. From the hand cut fries that soak up the perfect amount of gravy, to the curds which seem to melt just right. The gravy is dark and rich, but somehow manages to be light enough to let the other flavours come through. Do yourself a favour and get an all-dressed steamie. It is a gloriously soft steamed bun gently cradling a hot dog with just the right amount of snap. Topped with cabbage, mustard and coleslaw, you'd better grab two because one just isn't enough. Beautiful potato indeed!

Reminiscent of an 80's bowling alley consession stand, this tiny place tucked in the heart of Esquimalt might not look like much from the outside but it's full of flavour on the inside. A dedicated clientele, both French and English speaking steadily walk through the doors. Only a mere glance at the consistent menu do people take. Poutine, hot dogs and burgers are the only items you'll find here. Some say it's the closest thing to Quebec poutine and they may be right. Full of flavour and squeaky curds drenched in gravy and crispy fries. Don't expect to grab one of a handful of seating areas though. Most grab and take out.

These are easily the best poutine in Victoria. They use real cheese curds and everything is cooked fresh to order. Big portions and good prices. The owner, however, steals tips from employees, so I can't in good faith give more stars. Most of the employees I've seen are teenagers who can't easily stand up for themselves. It's disingenuous and terrible business practice.

FILTHY DUMP - went in for a poutine, one staff member was out front smoking so the smoke was coming into the store. He then came in, didn't wash his hands and went back to cutting potatoes. We then noticed the open scars on his hands. He was also loading potatoes into the fryer and everything that fell on the floor or counter was picked up and used. - absolutely a disgusting place, the health authority should shut them down

When craving a more authentic poutine and/or Montreal smoked-meat experience than can be found at the many fast-food places offering a loose interpretation of the delicacy these days, La Belle Patate is the first place that comes to mind for me. While my choices seldom stray from the classic poutine, smoked meat or all dressed "steamies" hot dogs, there are plenty of other items on the menu to explore. If a cozy ambience is important to you though, you should probably keep looking.

Just like home... In Montreal! Finally a real poutine "cantine style" with real fries, real poutine sauce and real cheese curds that squick in your mouth! . Looks old and nothing fancy inside at all but has the real classic taste and feeling of cantine style un Quebec. . The staff was friendly, but expect to wait around 10-15 minutes for your meal. There were people coming and going so you know this place is known for their good poutines. . Will go back again!

Ordered a medium regular poutine. My expectations were a little higher than usual since this is Quebec inspired. I've had poutines in Quebec and Montreal so I do have a bit of a reference.The poutine was okay. The gravy tasted good as it had a nice flavour. The cheese curds were good. The fries were not that good. I found the poutine had too much gravy. Service was good. Parking is limited as next door is really strict about using their spots.

Very well known place to get an authentic poutine experience as if you were in Quebec! They have a large assortment of poutine as well as hotdogs and burgers. I got a medium meat lovers poutine and I was stuffed to the gills afterwards. You could easily share a large between two people!

Such a rare find in B.C. to have authentic delicious poutine — especially with such a huge variety of toppings. The service was fast and friendly, and the serving sizes are huge! The only downside is that they don’t partner with any delivery service, but worth the trip into Esquimalt!

My Fries were all burnt! A guy went out for a smoke, other two employees just keep chatting. There were no customers and I waited 15 to 20 minutes just for a burger and a small poutine. The guy who went out for smoke comes back and he started making my poutine. The poutine was all burnt to black. Nobody cared about the fryer with fries in and the SERVED that BURNED FRIES. I'd heard great things about this unassuming little place. It fully surpassed expectations. Friendly staff, the place looked very clean, and the bacon poutine was friggin amazing! They did not skimp on the cheese, gravy or bacon! I'll report back when I return there and try some of their other food. All in all, I recommend it

Finally tried it after constantly hearing friends rave about it..... this is the most disgusting restaurant I’ve ever seen. Floors are revolting, walls, ceiling, fryer all absolutely disgusting. Covid protocol is non existent, no spacing, no attempt to reduce touch points and the main cook not wearing a mask. I should have walked out but felt guilty about walking in and having all 3 staff stare at me. I ordered two regular poutines and was hoping that the food might make up for the sorry state of that restaurant. Soggy fries drowning in gravy with kids lil squeakers cheese is not poutine.

It is impossible to find Montréal poutine outside of Montréal, however La Belle Patate does their best to smuggle poutine carefully out of the city without being noticed. The proprietors have done an excellent job covering up this operations with large delicious cheese curds and gravy. Geographically speaking, and flavour wise, it might be impossible to get authentic Quebec poutine, but damn they nailed It!

Not sure what the negative reviews are all about but this was by far the best poutine I have ever had. Although I have never had poutine in Montreal, my wife has had it there multiple times and claims it is 100% authentic. Although at first I thought it was a bit expensive, when I got my large order I realized that with the portion size and the abundance of toppings it was well worth it. My wife and I shared the large and it left us both satisfied.

Great poutine. Best in Victoria by far. It’s authentic. When I worked at the base it’s where all of the French people would go if they wanted poutine. Poutine is very filling as you’d expect so a small was usually good for me. Smoked meat sandwiches are also a good choice.

Classic poutine is the best - the place is somewhat dingy looking (it really is in need of a renovation) but it simply has the best poutine that I've had in the greater Victoria area. Don't expect to get it for super cheap (I think that a small starts at around $6 or $7, and I usually eat a medium for closer to $10), but the price is worth it.

As a Belgian person, I have high expectations when it comes to french fries (we invented it, it's our national dish, don't know why it's called french fries and not just fries...). The fries were overcooked at a temperature that is too low in what looks like used oil. The result: soggy fries, orange to brown in color. We had a poutine, fries and a burger and none of it was good. I don't understand the hype about this place in the reviews. We will not go back. Go to Belgian Fries in Vancouver and you'll see what I mean.

Having lived all across Canada, I have had a lot of great poutines. Hole in the wall style joints like this place are usually poutine gold, but this is definitely not the case. I have tried this place twice now. The potatoes they use must be caked with dirt cause every other bite is a gritty sandy crunch. Nothing turns my stomach more than gritty fries. The gravy on the other hand was ok. Nothing tasty but fine. The problem is you almost get more gravy than fries. I mean by the time your done there's a cm or more of solid gravy at the bottom. Being that its kinda ordinary makes the whole thing a sloppy soggy mess. I've had poutines where the gravy is so good you want to drink it. Not here. Finally the cheese curd. These guys claim to use the original quebec style cheese curd or something to this effect, and that they are not supposed to melt. Every decent poutine should be hot enough so that the cheese curds partially melt. I got my poutine fresh to order both times, and both times the gravy wasn't hot and the curds were like rubber with no flavor. Dude, even cheap Wendy's has a better poutine, c'mon! Don't believe me? Go get yourself a $3.99 poutine and put it beside La Belle Patate's poutine and taste them. Tasty gravy, tasty curds, hot non sandy fries.

Is the food good? Yes. It's the best poutine in town and the price is right. The bad: It's pretty gross inside. From my own restaurant experience, it should never get this bad. I actually turned around and left without ordering last time after seeing a customer with no mask. The staff were saying nothing about it (I can understand), but then I noticed the head cook, who I believe is the owner, was completely maskless as well. It's this attitude that is reflected in the state of the kitchen. I don't think I'll be going back if I see that level of disregard again.

The poutine here is ok. It's shocking to see all these great reviews at the same time it's not. The poutine on the west coast sucks, so really compared to the rest of the crap around I guess the poutines here are not bad. However if this place was in Quebec it would be out of business within months. Not only is it extremely over priced, the menu is limited, the place is dirty very dirty and the owner keeps his employees tips. No wonder he has different workers every time you go there. Not mention the food is far below your average Quebec casse croute quality.

A friend and I drove from Nanaimo as a result of word-of-mouth praise, and the establishment lived up to its high-praise. The staff were good-natured and I was happy to see a young man, under sixteen, running the till. My friend and I ordered, and, after a brief wait, the holy grail of poutines arrived right in front of me. The fries were cooked to perfection and I don't think I've ever seen cheese curds so large. Coupled with a cheese burger dressed in their house sauce, I rolled happily stuffed back to my friend's car. If you haven't eaten here, well, you're not livin' life to the fullest.

Rather awful. When I showed up, an hour before the posted closing time, they had already stowed chairs, tables, and condiments away. Nowhere to sit. Anyways. I ordered two hot dogs, one all-dress no relish, and some poutine. Then I used the restroom. When I got back, I stood next to the counter for some quite some time until one of them finally pointed to a brown bag and told me it was mine. I opened it, only to find two hot dogs, both all-dressed, with relish. Oh well. That's a fail. I hate relish. and only wanted one all-dressed. So I turned to my poutine instead. It was a freakin mess. A handful of wet fries, drowning in greavy, and just a few pieces of cheese here and there. Whatever. I asked them if they could cook new hot dogs, as ordered this time, and they told me the grill was already turned off, despite closing time still being 30 minutes away. Then one of them had the hardest time reimbursing me. Or feigned to have a hard time, because even when his colleague told him to give back 7$ (which was just half of what I paid for), he only gave back six. But whatever, I won't get in a fight over pennies, if that makes his day better. And that's how I decided to get McDonald's again this week. Not coming back here anytime soon.

La Belle Patate has the most authentic poutine that I have tried on the island! I lived in Montreal for many years of my life so I can attest to the authenticity. Aside from authenticity, the quality and taste are unparalleled. I mean proper cheese curds double fried fries... yum. I drive over an hour to pick up their poutine and steamies (no regrets). I'm a traditional type of guy but they have so many different varieties to try. To the best of my knowledge their gravy is vegetarian so you can have a delicious vegetarian meal. I'd suggest the vegetarian folks try their poutine with a side of guédille (hot dog with fries instead of a weiner).

Probably the best poutine I have had in Victoria. None of the other places seem to have the sauce quite right. We had to wait longer for our order because they accidentally gave ours to the wrong person after the customer had asked twice if it was hers. They realized after she had already left. Opps.

Seems pretty hit and miss. My girlfriend ordered a house special cheese burger and small poutine, and I ordered the La Belle Special poutine. She said the burger was a bit overcooked and had very thin patty. Both routines seemed like they had over cooked and/or old fries. The bathroom needs a good clean. The time I went before this it was pretty good. I would try it again but if it ends up like this time I wont be going again.

I love that the owners moved here and brought their love of Montreal street food and turned it into a successful business! Nice big cheese curds in the poutine. Years ago I was put off by the saltiness of the gravy, but I tried them again today and it was not over salty but very nice. The steamers are great all-dressed.
