Overall decent food. Mussels didnt seem that fresh but decent with the sauce. Waitress was very friendly and informative
I am surprised to see this mediocre restaurant receive such a strong rating. Our experience was anything but splendid. We began with the steamed clams. It was too salty and the broth was exceedingly thin. Such a dish does require a certain richness. This had none. One main dish was spectacularly poor. The haddock was dry and quite flavourless. The vegetables were undercooked and lacked flavour. The dish claimed to use basmati rice, but I could detect no such flavour, and we cook with basmati often. The other dish, pasta with lobster and scallops, was somewhat better, but not enough to redeem our experience, nor to warrant a favourable review. We will say that the staff was friendly and our service was good. However, if you visit Charlottetown this might be a restaurant to avoid.
Excellent food and service.
Good appetisers but be aware that some of their mains/entrees have a sweeter taste. If you don’t like that, avoid the chutney glaze (pan-fried haddock) and broth based dishes (seafood broth)
Good food (but very small portions especially with the prices they charge). Nice atmosphere
Food was good, but the setup was "awkward".
Great first time experience at the Merchantman. Had the haddock (big piece!) with a Greek salad and Parmesan crusted broccoli. Very yum! Good menu selection so there is enough choices for everyone. Great service. Will be back!
Went in for lunch with my husband. Sat down and waited 10 minutes for a server to come to the table. Nothing. The restaurant wasn’t busy and we were ignored. Don’t waste your time. Go to Mad Wok down to street. Nice staff and fresh food.
Great patio,amazing food
Pretty expensive. They have great food but the oysters are 3 bucks a shuck.... talk about a money grab
YOU MUST HAVE THE TUNA TARTAR. It will blow your mind. I'm always searching for a delicious tartar and this was by far the best tuna I have had to date. Server was friendly and helpful. Atmosphere was underwhelming. But the food was great and we were very happy!
Best steak sandwich on PEI
Lobster roll was very good. However 2 piece fish and chips is really one piece cut in half and over battered to make it massive. Tartar sauce was pretty good and seems homemade. We had to wait for our chowder for too long, and then even longer for our main course.
Great vibe. Awesome patio. Lovely spot. I had the mussels and a delicious cocktail while enjoying some cool Jams. Prices are alright. Would totally go back.
They got a great deal from 8pm-Close: 10 Oysters for $20
This place is great. I come from the west coast so maybe my experience isn't that wide but the food here was so fresh and fantastic. It was a hot and sunny day and the food hit the spot. The service was fast and my cup was never empty. I felt really relaxed during the meal. Order the oysters, you won't regret it
Excellent food. Service wasn't great.
Nice place but you store your many bags of ice beside the back stairs? That garbage you throw beside it is disgusting. That ice us supposed to be inside in a freezer boys. Digusting. A bum could whizz on it or mice run all over it outside. Grow up we drink that ice. You did catering to a mask less private gathering days ago. Double standards much?
*Highly Recommended* Love the lobster roll and the lobster dinner. It was my first experience with lobster and Bridgette (Lady that works there was so kind enough) made it perfect for me. I forgot to take picture of the dinner but enjoy the roll of you are in town.
Dine in
Try the seafood boil! Baked oysters were delicious as well!
Great service
Great atmosphere. The service was friendly. A busy location but food came quickly. Calamari was an excellent starter. Fish and chips, and pan-fried haddock were major hits. Our kids enjoyed the chicken fingers and the burger was a real burger. Lots of on-tap local and domestic beers.
Food and the service was very good! Recomend this to everyone
Saturday last minute arrival to Charlottetown. Called and reserved a table... loved the atmosphere. Waitress was super friendly and suggested the salmon board for one vs 'to share' as our starter. So grateful! Portions were very large. Highly recommend and will be back. :)
Out with a group of 12 people total and they had us on a call list since we had a big group. They got back to us in a really good time. We were seated and our drink orders were taken. This is where it gets abit low. After our drink orders were taken, it took abit of time for them to come back to us to get our food order and close to an hour to get our food. Mind you, it was busy so i will give them a pass for that. On to the picture you see. That dish was $29 plus tax. Yep, $29 plus tax for what you see. The salmon was very good but the very few potato's and broccoli i got with it was shocking. Abit more of veggies would not have hurt and i was still hungry after which should never be the case when eating out and spending that kind of money. I would get something else the next time i come here.
The place will satisfy both meat and seafood lovers. I ordered thai mussels and Atlantic salmon. They were delicious. We asked to be moved to another table and our request was immediately addressed. The staff are truly amazing. The only one star down is for tables on patio. Our table wasn't leveled, so if you lean on one side, water would spill on the other. Staff were swamped with the number of clients and understandably forgot to bring something to level out. Please, level your tables or give something to visitors to do it yourself
Everything is tasty. Have choice for seafood lovers, meat lovers and vegetarian. Service is a bit slow during peak times. Waitress is nice.
We sat for about 10 minutes before we were offered a drink from our waiter. After that service was better. Food was great. The soup was worth the trip alone. They crack and cut the lobster so that even newbies can eat it without making a mess.
Great service and food. The clams were delicious. Lobster cooked well. Sides of cauliflower and mushroom soup (rich and thick) were very tasty. Would definitely go back.
The interior design for the Merchantman was very beautiful and really gives an elegant, local, and upclass vibe. The calamari appetizer was very delicious for a starter. Also was the Atlantic salmon was very good. We waited a bit longer than we wanted for our meal, we figured it may have been delayed due to the Lobster Seafood Boil dish. This is definitely a must share meal! A huge portion, however the price was very good for the amount of food that is given.
Great sized portions, excellent oysters but small muscles with mediocre sauces that lack luster. They also didn’t have any fresh horseradish, but, their jalapeño sauce was excellent!
PEI Oysters, green curry mussels, Halibut sandwich and Lobster roll were great!
I see. So kevin murphy didn't wear a mask or do 6 foot spacing entering his own kitchen at merchantman. We got eyes you know. INTERESTING.
Beautiful spot. I love the patio especially. And the food is delicious!
Good staff and service. And the food was delicious, especially the lobster ????
Great staff, great service and very good food. Amazing portions; it was our 1st seafood experience on the Island and we were extremely happy. Happy visitors from Vaughan, Ontario.
I had a superb experience at this restaurant. All the dishes ordered at my table were excellent. The entree I ordered however, the seafood linguini was not great, and so I let my waiter know. It was totally unexpected when he came with my bill and the entree had been removed. Not only that but he thanked me for providing the feedback. Appreciated this so much. Kudos to the Merchantman! Fantastic location, great food, and helpful staff.
Unique cocktails and good selection of oysters. The hickory potato chip nachos and lobster roll were amazingly delicious.
This was my favorite place to stop for food on our trip to PEI. Everything rolled up into a perfect dining experience. We went in being told ahead of time that there would be a wait on food. But the friendly service and atmosphere definetely made the wait not an issue in any way. Plus the food was well worth it. #1 spot from me for this trip!
I had read a lot of good reviews for this restaurant prior to visiting to Charlottetown, and was quite excited to give it a try. While the location itself is great, everything else ended up disappointing me a bit. The food was just underwhelming for the price. We had the Halibut with quinoa but both were very dry. The pasta was just average but had with very little scallops. And the service was just average. I had this restaurant quite early on in my trip to PEI, and I think especially after trying many other restaurants after, this restaurant was both the priciest meal I had during my visit and least enjoyable. There were a lot of other seafood restaurants after that were a lot less expensive and much better.
You may be denied entry here like us, just because you are a couple as opposed to a group of four or more...
This was my favorite place restaurant while visiting Charlottetown, PEI. We The wine, oysters and our meal combined with the friendly service and atmosphere definitely made for the perfect dining experience. I would visit again next time I am on the island :)
If you don't have a lot of time in Charlottetown, be sure to make this as one of your stops! The atmosphere is certainly inviting and the patio has just the right amount of breeze. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by a very helpful host who seated us quickly and offered to get us water as we perused the menu. When our server (Emma) arrived, she was friendly and welcoming. She was knowledgeable about the oysters and made a few recommendations. The oysters were fresh, well shucked, and presented nicely. When we finished, Emma promptly brought over the check and asked how we enjoyed our time. You can tell that she was engaged and obviously loves her job. She is certainly an asset to Merchantman!
Tried the lobster roll, chowder, crab cakes and mussels. Lobster roll 3/10, chowder 10/10, crab cakes and mussels 8/10. I'd go back just for the chowder. It was the best I've ever had. The service was really nice and the interior decor is nice. It's a little more upscale than I was expecting. You wouldn't stand out if you dressed up to go here. The waiter had a tie on. Would definitely return and definitely recommend.
Food was delicious, serving staff was great.
Wonderful place with great service. We ate outside and had some amazing food. We asked for a recommendation from the staff and she was spot on with the fish and chips. We will be back for sure!
The seafood is fresh, the burger is not bad, the staff wasn’t friendly.
Really enjoyed my meals here. Have been twice, my group of 6 all enjoyed their meals. Fresh oysters are perfect. Twice I had the panfried haddock and loved it. Nice, warm cozy atmoshphere and pleasant staff. I would return, no compaints at all. Deserts were amazing also.
We had the oysters, the crab cakes and the spinach and artichoke dip: everything was delicious! Very enjoyable terrace and great service.
Good service good food, The scallop sliders are worth the visit, say Hi to Steve great server.
Used to be my favourite place to go when I was living downtown, in the summertime you have a choice of relaxing in the sun or next to a fire on the patio or you can choose the cozy more intimate indoor dining room. The fish and chips is great along with many other menu items
Really nice place and delicious food????
Great outside, perfect evening, kid friendly staff. Dinner made our perfect vacation.
All round great experience... Service was exceptional, menu options were extensive and the food was great... Inviting restaurant, lively but not noisy in a good location. Only disappointment was there were no Canadian wines available by the glass!
We have eaten here twice and both times it has been delicious! We've had the raw oysters, salads, chicken tacos and fish tacos, fish and chips and the Mac and Cheese. All prepared to perfection. If you haven't eaten here...you need to! We will be back!
Great outdoor patio to enjoy the downtown of Charlottetown in the evening. the lobster roll was amazing ! service is great, good place to eat in the city I've been there a few times and I shall return again thanks you guys great Maritime hospitality. T.
Little surprised that mussels were so small given they are grown in PEI ...we get better ones in Halifax. The pricing is way off in this type of seafood.
great food and great drinks!
The Thai Curry Mussels were to die for.
Food was amazing... Service was a little inexperienced but nice.
Service was good but meal quality not above average.
Food was pretty good. Little bit pricey. I've had better seafood chowder i found it lacking ingredients and it was a little bit bland. Everything else was great.
Great food and excellent service
Food was excellent. The only reason for the 4 star review was we waited for and hour and a half which could be to the seafood boil. Could easily serve 3 to 4 people. We barely made it half way through.
Delicious lunch menu. White white mussels excellent and calamari perfectly done.
One of my go to spots when I want western food that's not fast food or pub food. Prices are reasonable and food is good.
Your service is quick, most of the waitresses are pretty hot, the prices are fair, but you lose 2 stars for playing into this COVID hoax for so long, does murphy group have no self respect? Laughable and shameful.
Very good food! Loved the potatoe chip nachos but spicy chicken burger lacked spice.
Food was good. Service was friendly. Oysters were fresh. My first time having Atlantic oysters, I do prefer Pacific oysters after having both, but that's my preference. The chowder was just ok. It tastes more potato than seafood, I've definitely had much better. The blackened fish sandwich was standard, but still good.nthe Lobster roll was quite delicious! The linguini was a bit dry but maybe that was so you can taste the lobster more, however a litttttle bit more sauce would have made it very good.
What a fantastic place. Oysters are great. The service is excellent. A MUST!!
We were here several years ago but I still think about how great the mussels were and what nice conversation we had with the bartender. Lovely, lovely place.
Can understand a wait to get in, but waited over an hour for the food. Server was pleasant though.
We walked into this place by chance and without reading any reviews. We were very pleasantly surprised as all of the dishes we ordered were delicious. I've had plenty of fish burgers in the past and the one here is definitely a memorable one. The chowder was thick and delicious. The clams and mussels were also super delicious and the portions were generous.
Service was slow/unreliable BUT very friendly. Oysters and wine (sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand) we're delicious.
The best fish and chips in town. Always fresh and friendly service.
This restaurant is fantastic! The food has perfect seasoning and all the raw materials are super fresh! With friendly and lovely service! Can’t miss it!
Great food. Had the lobster roll and the chicken tacos. Both had lots of flavour. Decor is tasteful and thought out. Great atmosphere as noise was taken into account when building to help with sound. Service was a tad slow but considering it was Canada day that is expected.
Beautiful restaurant. Good service. Decent prices according to your meal. Just wish the beautiful lights would have been turned on earlier in the evening. Towards 9:30pm where I was sitting it was starting to be harder to see my meal plus they were so nice I was looking forward to it. Definitely recommanded for a good time downtown Charlottetown.
Delicious and good portion size! Their buttery lobster roll was solid and stuffed full, clam chowder was steaming hot and creamy, and their fish taco is crispy on the outside tender on the inside. Favorite is probably the merchant man nachos which uses seasoned kettle chips instead of corn chips We enjoyed it so much we came back two days later for more. Note that they get extremely busy at night so a reservation is a must, even though we came early October which is end of season. The second time we came during lunch and it was much quieter.
Great food all around, and the bar is great if you're sitting in with friends.
Great atmosphere, it was a beautiful day but the patio was full so we sat inside. The exposed brick and rustic decor was beautiful. Great food, my wife and I shared the smoked salmon board, so I can't speak to the rest of the menu, but the shareable board was great for two looking for a light lunch. Mostly ok service, this is the only part that I felt needed improvement, however it was so bad that I won't go back. Mostly just slow.
Merchant man is good pub food.
Used to love going to The Merchantman. Service was great, as was the food. Due to Covid, it's been a while. Don't know what happened over time, but verrry disappointed with the food. We ordered nachos and added chicken, and also the spinach and artichoke dip. Nachos were on the greasy side, and it seemed that they may have used pressed chicken as opposed to fresh. The spinach/artichoke dip was warm, not served hot as it should be. It also was lacking in taste. Good thing the Murphy's make decent beer...( Beach Chair Lager & 1776 IPA)...so all was not disappointing. Hopefully this was just a "one of" experience.
Had a great dinner here. They were very considerate of all of my allergies (I have a ton). The waitress helped me pick something gluten, fish, pork, and nut free and made me feel comfortable that the kitchen was doing everything they could to keep me safe. Food was great!!
Good food, pretty cozy & good friendly staff.
Great food. Friendly staff
Visited the patio in July, the service was quick and friendly, the seating was spacious and comfortable and the patio and restaurant were attractively decorated with window boxes and planters. The seafood chowder is delicious!
Great food, generous portions and kind service on a delivery order. Thank you!
That was great. From oysters to dessert. The fried calamari is amazing and the sticky date was delicious. Way better than Fishbones…
Good service, reasonably short wait time ~20 mins. Chicken risotto and scallop/mussel linguine we’re both very good. Recommend.
I dont know why the seafood chowder does not taste like seafood but I like how it was made creamy. The patio area was nice and colourful. Staff were nice and accommodating.
Just had a lovely dinner there with two friends. We were seated in a large, comfy booth and our server was relaxed and attentive. The food was very good, from the chowder to the oysters to our mains. They were accommodating and respectful of my Celiac. I would recommend this to visitors and locals alike!
This place has gotten better over the last year or two. Good selection of food and reasonably priced. Good atmosphere for dining or sitting in the bar section.
We visited merchantman’s a few days ago. Everything we tried was simply delicious! I enjoyed the seafood chowder and my pan- fried haddock with rice and vegetables and my boyfriend loved the burger! I have to admit though, the pecan cheesecake with salted caramel on top was one of the best dessert I have ever tasted...! -it is served with whipped cream but I don’t eat it so I asked for vanilla ice cream on the side instead- it was...deadly....!
We are there in the evening. The inside was full so we had to sit on the Patio. It was freezing. I wish they had some haters outside to keep us warm. The food tasted good. They had vegetarian options.
Our waitress was really good! Maybe slow but it's Island pace. :) Food was quick and good! Nice location although parking is a bit of a hassle (as tourists). Oh ... and waitress gave great suggestions on other places to go eat etc .. That turned out really good! Best advice!
Really good food, atmosphere, and service. Their "smoked salmon board" was excellent. We were very impressed.
the service was excellent. The hostess, server, and trainee went out of their to be awesome. The food was perfect .Thank you for a great experience.
Great food, service, and amazing dessert. Great aesthetic of the restaurant.
Delicious food and great service. Chowder is the best. Recommended.
Nachos are amazing. The chips are unique and well seasoned. The staff looks like they are very depressed.
Best experience in PEI. Been here two times for our 4 days stay and both were fantastic. Food was amazing and service was bestest. Will definitely come back when we are in PEI next time.
Over priced for the amount of food served. Still hungry when we left. Outdoor patio had a great atmosphere, staff were friendly, just not pleased with my meal.
There were a load of empty tables, but we were for some reason seated at a table that was about a foot away from another couple which was a bit awkward. Great atmosphere, we went there for burger love and it took a little bit longer to get our food than I would have expected but it was really good!
This place is fantastic! Great menu, amazing service, and the food is absolutely delicious.
Service
Super good food and service! Loved the terasse in the back! The dribks were really good also
Went here with my husband and baby while on vacation. Service was friendly and accommodating. We tried the fish cakes, tuna tartare, and oysters — they were all delicious and well above average. Nice atmosphere. Fairly priced for how good everything was! I would definitely come back.
We have had two great meals here so far and can't wait to go back. The value is apparent and quality is undeniable! Nice light options for lunch with beautiful local ingredients that do not overpower the plate. They keep it simple and delicious. Two thumbs up!
Probably the best/my favourite pub food establishment in PEI. The flavours in every dish are complex enough to be interesting with only enough pretension to make them relevant. The service is good and the prices are very fair given the location. Any place with high quality disposable napkins gets an extra star from me.
They supply three great things that will make you want to keep coming back. Great food, drinks and atmosphere. Check out their restaurant "Next Door" for an amazing outdoor experience
Great food and delightful atmosphere. Nice outdoor deck to eat on, and a lovely inside.
Food was good. Loved the chowder. It's a big restaurant so there's lots of places to sit.
The Lobster Seafood Boil was delicious, and the staff was friendly and experienced. It was an amazing experience.
Higher end pub. Good was good, good selection of drinks as well. Little up there in price
Good food, friendly, good place
One of the best dinners we have ever had. The summer salad, calamari, steak sandwich and risotto were all spectacular. Each one individually were fantastic. The Merchantman is now on our list of must visits when we visit Charlottetown. I wish I took more pictures but we were enjoying everything too much.
Very nice patio. Friendly service. Extensive list of beers and cocktails; somewhat limited selection of wines. Nice place to hangout on a summer day.
Excellent Haddock tacos and garden salad. Service was good. Husband's fish was good too with a nice batter.
Get formal dinning, but also a great place grab a pint of your frosty beverage. Also have $3 oysters and held price oysters after ten if your a seafood lover.
Good service and fresh seafood.
Great selection of local fresh oysters. Excellent service and they have a kids menu. Would definitely recommend if you are looking for PEI seafood dining.
The service was mediocre, a few minutes after sitting down we asked the waitress a question about the menu to which she answered walking away from us.... Weird! We then told her that we are ready to order, she told us: wait! She went on to take orders from other tables who had arrived after us although they asked her to have a few more minutes, she just waited for them to be ready and took their order and then came back to us. We had ordered raw oysters, salads and cooked fish. The raw oysters arrived soon enough then we waited 20-25 min for the rest of the food. We asked for the salad in between but were told that everything must arrive at the same time as the cooked fish...again weird! When it came time to pay, she finally asked us how we were doing! Needless to say that the overall experience degrades the rating of the good food!
There were 8 of us and each one had an amazing meal! Seafood and steak were fabulous. Great atmosphere and excellent service. Thanks to our server, Jaimie
Tasty seafood and friendly service. Had to wait a bit past our reservation time to be seated.
So good! The oysters were fresh, and shucked perfectly, with little debris. Service was kind and polite, even taking 10 minutes of her time to give us the details of the touristy stuff in PEI.
The curry was wonderful and the staff great to accommodate such a large group of hungry cyclist. Beautiful end to the Grand Fondo
This restaurant was Awesome! The food was delicious and the service was top notch. I would definitely recommend it!
Pan cooked Halibut here at Merchantman is the 'bench mark' for PEI. Superbly prepared and presented. As an Islander, seafood chowder here was good but not the bench mark. Covid safety standards high. Staff always pleasing.
damn good food. loved ???? the place and food.
Very solid choice, great setting and food was great!
I like the new menu and service is courteous but how you you guys justify wearing masks when you have 50 customers sitting around face to face no masks all day at tables? I bet none of you burn your biohazard used masks.
Had the burger love. So yummy.
The most amazing vegan taco ive ever had Hands down..thats all i have to say
Fresh seafood, adorable staff with warm and elegant atmosphere
Not sure how my wife and I managed to finish it, but we shared the seafood boil and it was so good. A huge serving of one full lobster, one crab leg, mussels, quahogs (our first time trying them!), and scallops. My only suggestion would be to leave out the crab leg when it's not fresh in season, as it's out of season right now so it was clear to us that it was from frozen. It was much drier and lacking flavour compared to the incredibly fresh and succulent lobster, mussels, quahogs and scallops. Nonetheless, still a fantastic meal!
Dinner
The sea food boil is a must have masterpiece.
Such an awesome spot for fantastic food to share; relaxing outdoor area with comfortable seating, lighting and great selection of drinks. Super staff. Great summer night catching up with family.
Best fish & chips I've eaten! Had to go to C'town for work and popped in to Merchantman for dinner the first night. Had fish & chips with a local beer and a glass of wine and it was perfect -crispy beer batter with light flaky fish and tasty fresh chips. Tried another restaurant while there but wasn't as good so ended up eating at Merchantman for the rest of my stay. Beautiful decor and great service too with great selection of local beers. Highly recommend!
I would say that Merchant Man is a must do in Charlottetown! Especially in the summer for their patio! There isn't a bad choice on the menu! I especially love the tacos and sweet potato fries! Drink menu is great as well! Tons of comfortable seating. Fabulous seafood.
Ordered the seafood boil and it amazing!
had an amazing meal! we are here from ontario and my son had eaten here with family friends earlier this week and highly recommended merchant next door- food, service and atmosphere all outstanding- cant wait to go back!!! thanks so much Tanner for your amazing service!!!!
Fantastic. Had the seared scallops and seafood chowder. Would recommend. A little pricey but worth it
Incredible food. Definitely worth to stop by and try it out .
We had a great late lunch. I really enjoyed the Nashville crispy chicken sandwich. We will go again next time we are in PEI
Tasty!
Had the chicken sandwich. Not bad, not super good, had some sweet barbecue type sauce and pickle which kept taste a little bit different. Do clarify about the sides, you get charged for premium.
Upscale dining with a casual, relaxed atmosphere and incredibly friendly wait staff. The food is above average with some selections standing out as being particularly crave-worthy. My partner's and my steaks were seasoned and cooked perfectly. Best steak I've had in recent memory, honestly. Always consistently good; I'm yet to be disappointed by this restaurant.
Do you guys do 6 foot distancing precautions in the kitchen? No. So the whole virus distance precaution is as much as a joke as the whole story itself.
Although other good reviews food is not fresh as other seafood restaurants
Awesome service and very friendly staff. What a fun experience. Prices were fair market value.
Due to the time of year of our visit to PEI, we were limited on the choices for lobster restaurants. Certainly glad a local suggested Merchantman. It was the highlight meal of our trip. Thank you!
Great food. Great service. Great place!
Love oysters! You can get different places oysters in pei. We had the seasonal menu that was top-notch.
Ordered a $35 striploin, it said it’s a 10oz steak but really looked more like a mini burger size. Worse is dry and probably had been in the fridge for a century. Not only does it taste awful but the side dishes are all reheated and difficult even chew. Definitely not recommended.
Best spinach dip in PEI! Food was delicious!
Just ate here this Summer on their back deck it was a great experience
Excellent food and service! The seafood blow is soooo yummy
We stopped in here for lunch last June as we spent 3 months touring the lovely Country of Canada! Such a gorgeous day! I had some of the best awesome steamed fresh local mussels, oh my! Doris chose one of her favorites, Spinach with Baby Potatoes, which she thoroughly enjoyed with a Red Sangria while I went with a pint Blue Moon Draft to wash it all down. Our server, Sarah, was attentive, courteous and friendly. Our total bill came to $ 64 CAD ($ 48 USD). Super spot to grab some grub! We liked it so much we returned here again a in few days. When we returned, we splurged as Doris started out with a glass of Sterling Chardonnay, while I had a pint IPA followed by a pint Island Red. We both went with the special of Chicken Rissotto, small spinach salad and baby potatoes for Doris, I went with seasonal veggies. For dessert we split their fabulous cheesecake pairing it with a cup of Irish Coffee. Once again our server, this time Kathy, was awesome. The food was superb and well worth the tab which came to $ 150 CAD ($ 113 USD). Kindly click the like button if this review or my photos are useful.
The staff is very nice and the food is good.
Unfortunately we were disappointed. We ordered Calamari and Fishcakes, immediately after tasting the Fishcakes we both felt that they were spoiled. Staff was great, immediately our server took them away, we were offered other options and apoloizies. To our amazement there was a lady being served Fishcakes after we said they were off! Hope she survives. Stay clear ????
The salmon board was delicious and so was the pan fried haddock. Our waiter was Steven and he was amazing.
Wonderful service and fantastic food! Recommend the island boil!
Excellent food and great service
The seafood boil was good. It needed more of the delicious cream sauce that on the dish. All of the seafood was good, but the lobster was slightly over cooked.
We gave this restaurant our buisness 2 days ago. Our bill came to 180$. I hadn't been back home to pei in over 2 year, I ordered take out for MM to surprise and treat my family. This establishment put the wrong sauce in with my mothers Cesar salad, she opened it because it was within the salad container and poured it all over her salad which was then ruined ( the sauce didnt go with anything else we had ordered ) The lobster rolls we ordered when we opened the containers they were a mess all over the inside of the container, like someone just scooped and dumped it inside the container and then flipped them all upside down. They are 25$ each. I ordered a two scallop appetizers and the sauce leaked out of the styrofoam container all down the inside of the bag so our burger order container was all sticky. They didnt put napkins or utensils in a takeout bag during peak tourism season. The foods flavoring was delicious however the presentation and appreciation of the customers takeout buisness is lacking. I'm not sure if I'll be giving them my buisness again on my next trip to pei. I was so disappointed. *****Also when I called to order my food over the phone the staff didnt want to assist me with my choices !!! ******* I haven't ordered there since the new owners took over the restaurant. So I wanted a little guidance of what were popular dishes so I could provide my family different choices for food selection for their treat out on me !!!! They rushed me off the phone, continuing to repeat my order would take 1 hour- 2hour before it's ready and the menu is online. ( update; they do not have an updated menu online it's the menu from the previous owners. The staff member I spoke with over the phone didnt know the menu and told me over the phone they didn't serve scallops atm. I walked out of my hotel and across the street and made my order inside with 2 orders of scallop appetizers, 2 lobster roll dishes , 1 burger dish, 1 artichoke and spinach dip.****** I only recieved 6 of the 7 items I ordered. ****** I didnt call back to complain I decided to make a review which isnt something I regularly do. But my experience was so disappointing not only to my family but to me personally. I work very hard for my living wages and to be left feeling unappreciated as a well paying customer after tipping for take out I'm just appauld. I dont recommend this place. Perhaps dining inside is a better experience however I highly doubt I'll be a returning customer. CUSTOMER BEWARE WHEN ORDERING TAKE OUT.
Inconsistent COVID-19 rules. Would be nice to know before entering that a party of 7 is accepted.
Service was amazing! Lobster roll and sweet potato fries were delicious.
Absolutely LOVED the crab roll and baked Oysters ! Best experience out in P.E.I !
The seafood boil is a mountain of mussels, clams, scallops, potatoes, arugula, crab legs, with a full lobster sitting on top. We shared between two people and crushed it!! The sauce all the seafood sitting in is delicious. Scallops were pan fried to perfection. Mussels were on the smaller side but there was an abundance of it. Crab was fresh! Clams were good too (even with the occasional grain of sand you'd get with it but that can't be helped). Lobster was a tad bit chewy/overcooked but still really good!! Crab legs were my favourite bit. Service was friendly and attentive! Really loved the ambiance and chill music of sitting at the back patio. Glad we came here for our first night in PEI!
Beautiful restaurant/Pub with a varied menu! You can definitely find something good for every taste!
Delicious fish and chips! Friendly safe!
Great atmosphere, delicious food and excellent service.
This place is great. If you go to PEI, you have to go here. The food is great, the draught is cold, the summer mule was excellent. The Salmon board was amazing. Mussels top notch and the Haddock tacos nice and fresh.
Food good but service very slow.
My first visit was in spring 2017 and I came back today. Both time food was satisfying. I was tired from the long drive and had less appetite. So I only ordered linguine. My partner ordered fresh oysters, fish tacos with seafood chowder. Service was slower than expected even for drinks and row oysters. This is the reason for 4 stars. If you're rushing, this might not be your best place. I loved my linguine. It was flavorful and came with decent amount of mussels and a lot of scallops. I was not hungry but it was easy to finish. (Seafood chowder was amazing as well.) I ended up ordering desserts. We had chocolate mousse and strawberry shortcake. They both are fresh and not overly sweet. I really enjoyed the mousse. I thought their food prices were pretty fair and right. I would definitely go back again. (We are not drinkers so I don't know about alcohol though)
Good quality, but not delicious! And a flay enjoy my burger????
Food and service excellent! Local cab driver recommended while I was visiting. Great choice! Be sure to stop by. Prices were very reasonable.
Lobster rolls best so far of all Atlantic visited so far. Very friendly staff.
Meal was delicious Server was awesome Restaurant was perfect inside...rustic decor. Really enjoyed my dinner experience
Everything was very good. Place was packed but service was fast and efficient.
Delicious food and perfect service. The seafood cakes with the salsa and slaw were tender and very tasty Salads and dressings are generous and unique.
Not a good experience! Dinner on a Monday night. The "host" looked like he was not happy being bothered with another client. We were initially seated in the bar - above the machine room - buzzy, vibrating table and subsonic noise. The waitress seemed distracted and really didn't seem to care (although she pretended to). The burger was dry and on a stale bun, the kettle chips were soggy and greasy, there was debris on the floor (fork), Fish taco's were just acceptable. The Oysters and Chowder were good though!
Great atmosphere, friendly and prompt service and delicious menu options.
Good is good and service has improved. I do enjoy the fish n chips
A quiet resturant, one of the open late restaurant in town. Patio is available. Friendly waitress.
I had an excellent dinner here. The atmosphere was warm and inviting. The service was excellent. And every bite of the food was delicious. I had the fish and chips, and my partner had the salmon filet. We split our meals and every bite was delicious. We took a cheesecake to go and it was equally wonderful. Too bad we were just visiting Charlottetown. I'm still thinking about this meal!
Stopped in this afternoon for lunch! Got nachos and the Nashville Chicken Burger, both were delicious and the service was also great! I never think to go to Merchant Man but I’ll definitely be back before the summers gone:)
5⭐ Food 5⭐ Service 5⭐ Atmosphere
Great service from Trena and the food was fabulous. Love their fish tacos ????
Lovely restaurant with both inside and patio seating. We had a reservation and were seated right away after arriving. All courses were lovely and the waitstaff were excellent! Would go again!
My daughter and I went to dinner there for the first time and enjoyed a wonderful meal.
Some of our staff visited here for Burger Love. All of the food was delicious and we'll prepared. The wait staff were efficient and helpful. Local craft beer was available. Would definitely recommend the Merchantman.
Make a reservation, this restaurant is extremely busy. Excellent food and service.
Had the smoked salmon board and it was amazing. Our waitress was very nice and catered to our needs (we have a 2 year old) she quickly brought out a high chair and got him some chocolate milk. If we lived in Charlottetown we would be back weekly. Lastly, the booths were very comfortable and the art work was quite original.
Went here for a fancy dinner - they made amazing cocktails too! Loved the scallops, especially. The different tastes of the oysters made them really interesting to try!
The patio restaurant itself is fantastic! The staff were more than accommodating when we asked to move tables because we were right next to a speaker and had two young children. That being said; the restaurant itself was busy, but from what I gather it's a fairly popular outdoor venue eatary,so I don't think this is out of the norm for them. As I said before we had two young children and when we arrived there was other young children already there dinning with their families. Our food took at least 45mins to arrive at our table after our appetizers were finished. Our server wasn't very friendly and approachable, barely cracked a smile until it came to the payment. I also work in the restaurant business and have for many years,I understand you're busy, and have a lot going on but it's take nothing to crack a smile to your tables make them feel welcome specially in a city that is over run with tourists. Also three men were constantly smoking right in front of the door, more so the entrance as its'open concept/patio restaurant they might as well have just smoked at their table. Our food was very tasty and everyone enjoyed their meals once it arrived.
Excellent seafood, top notch service, and a cozy, timeless atmosphere. I had the scallops, which were perfect, and my partner had the haddock; also excellent. The seasonal vegetables, in mid May, were beets, and surprisingly good; done just right. Overall: recommended.
Pretty good food and decent service but the red wine was warm…had to ask for an ice bucket. A bit underwhelming when you’re spending $50 on a bottle.
We came here after dinner around 9:30 for wine, oysters and desserts. They have an awesome deal for oysters after 10 pm, 20 oysters for $30. The oysters were so good! We had an awesome time. The staff were really nice and attentive but not intrusive.
Great seafood at good prices. The scallops were amazing and the boil is amazing.
The restaurant interior is modern and well designed. We had super customer service which is so important. A couple of us had the fish and chips and found the portion to be on the small side for the price... We left still feeling hungry. Good beer selection though!!!
We had a table of 12 people. It took forever to get our drinks and our appetizers. We didn’t get our mains until over two hours after we got there. Once we got our food, not one person was happy with their dish, regardless if it was a lobster roll, a burger, fish and chips or tacos. The prices are not cheap, but the quality of food and service was cheap!
Staff is super friendly. Food is very good. Their nachos are made with home made chips, nice spin! Their non seafood entrees were excellent. Chicken mushroom risotto, and island burger were delicious. They also serve hand cut fries.
Delicious seafood, huge portion! We ordered the Island Seafood Boil dish (Market price that day was $93) for 2 and we were stuffed. Highly recommend when visiting PEI
Great pub food. We had fish tacos and fish and chips. They know how to cook fish. Perfect portion size. Exceptionally friendly staff.
Good food and helpful staff but very poor wine list, no PEI wines or even Maritime wines. Would have given 4 stars but too many boring ubiquitous Australian and Californian wines were listed. They celebrate local sourced foods which is good but they give a choice Canadian wines too. Others places give better choice.
Great service n great food esp the ribs...second to none!!???? loved the outdoor patio n music ...beautiful spot ❤ loved my special drink ????
This place was amazing, the atmosphere was great. It really lives up to its name, I could tell the seafood was caught and served straight to my table. The service was super fast and friendly. I loved my meal, and so did my partner. Even in a busy place my table was always attended to and we were checked up on. 10/10 would recommend.
Always amazing food - not just okay, like seriously amazing! 10/10
What a feast! Started with soft shell clams and oysters and both were delicious. Lobster came next and that was cooked perfectly, accompanied by mushroom soup and something else I forget now but very satisfied with overall meal and service. Will me back if in PEI.
Great Cioppino. Spinach salad had a bit too much cheese for my taste and I love cheese. Good service.
The food was delicious especially the nachos! It's made with kettle chips instead of tortilla chips and it was amazing with every bite ???? would definitely return here next time I visit PEI!
Friendly staff,great food, reasonable prices
We had a great lunch! Fish tacos and open face steak sandwich. Very pleasant server also!
Great place. Awesome food and service
Great service, friendly staff, delicious food
Great food, and great service
Friendly staff, nice atmosphere, great food. One of the best curries on the island. Veggie burger sound delicious and is soy free. Good pricing.
On giving 2 stars because the service was decent but that was only good thing about our meal. Ordered a calamari to split, fish tacos, and crispy chicken tacos. Calamari was in the fryer too long and came out overdone. Chicken in the taco was overdone, sauce was tasteless. Fish in the taco was also overdone and tasteless. We decided to skip dessert.
Food was either overcooked/dry or underseasoned. Oysters were mutilated but fresh. Beer was nice and cold. Service was good.
Wonderful staff, very helpful and great food. Nice finish to our trip to PEI.
Overall good experience. Staff could use a little more training. Yes I would recommend
PEI is synonymous with amazing seafood. We did a lot of research and read many reviews of restaurants to visit and we were hoping choosing Merchantman for a Tuesday night dinner would be a hit. Sadly, it did not meet our expectations. We ordered oysters and crab cakes, both of which were excellent and made us excited for our entrees. Unfortunately, it seemed that the order was either missed or forgotten because we waited 40-45 minutes for our entree after the appetizers were brought out. The server was apologetic about the wait and we were patient without raising an issue. The dishes looked delicious, but looks were deceiving. The Cioppono's broth lacked the depth of flavor I was expecting for a dish that took so long. I wanted to dip a crusty piece of bread in a flavorful broth but was not impressed at all. Furthermore, I tasted cold canned tomatoes; this is something I would not expect for something you charge close to $30 for. The chowder was decent but there was nothing special. The biscuit was the same. The server was polite and kind but after the entree, there was no urgency to get desert. It may have been an off night. Most people who dine here enjoy their meals, unfortunately we didn't and will not return.
It was a very good burger and salad. Very nice staff and clean restaurant.
exceptional food and service. a little on the pricey side.
We had the burger from Burger Love. Burger was excellent. Service was nice and professional. Atmosphere and decor was good. I suggest going at night.
The food is so delicious we ordered fried calamari, fish burger, chicken Nashville burger and it was beyond expectation
Loved the oysters, beautifully prepared fish tacos were excellent, definitely will go back when we go to PEI again.
The service at this place was truly terrible. Our server was not friendly until she likely overheard us saying she was not friendly. We had to ask who our server was after 20 minutes. Food quality was cold and burnt (both at same time). The one shining star is for the drinks on the Happy Hour menu (which they tried to overcharge us for). It was not super busy but we waited forever for everything. Lacked quality and service, we were tricked by the decor! Hope it was just an off day, not that we will ever test that theory.
Seafood cakes were the best we've had. The (delightfully large) mussels were served in a Thai Green Curry sauce—both are tasty, but they didn't blend together well—as such it was just okay. It was like having plain mussels with a side or green curry soup. It was also served with garlic bread which didn't make sense given the chosen flavouring. The chowder was thick without having an overpowering cream flavour. Served with a buttermilk biscuit, which is too soft for soup, so I recommend asking them to swap out for a thicker crust bread. Overall, it's okay but don't have 4-star high hopes.
Excellant food, every dish is tasty. Best, light battered, thick white, fish and chips, in town. Nice, inviting ambiance to relax in. Never tire of visiting there!
Food & Service Was Very Good. Overall it was a Great Atmosphere & Comfortable Surroundings.
Such incredibly poor service at the grab and go area of the restaurant beside Merchantman tonight. The server was visibly upset we were put into her section at 7:30PM and proceeded to clean tables around us for 20 minutes, serve other tables and not even come to take our drink order. We left without the server even speaking to us and took our business gladly to the John Brown, which was 5 star service.
Omg their house salad is amazing
Have been there a few times. Today I have lobster and scallop linguine which is creamy, rich, and a little bit sweet. However the first few bites taste a little bit weird to me (maybe because of the big chunk of goat cheese) but when i become familiar with it, it is fine. The highlight of the dish is lobster meat. In the summer, I like their lobster roll (better than some other similar locations in town). Service is ok, depending on the day, I have experienced both good and not so good service here. Come back this time for a lobster roll, seafood chowder, and raw oyster. Better than the previous time for both service and food quality.
Nice service
We try and pop into the Merchantman every time we visit Charlottetown. And by pop in, I mean, sit in the outdoor patio. Their seafood chowder is one of the best in the Maritimes anywhere, in my opinion. Their fish and chips are also excellent, though not exactly what I would call English or New Zealand style. Mussels are also superb.
I was extremely disappointed with the service. When we arrived there was only one other couple finishing their meal. The waitress took us to a dark tiny table at the back hidden from everything. I was not happy and asked for another table. I was told then that only two stools at the window were available. That all others in the restaurant were reserved. Not the case entirely. We sat at the window and then waited and waited to be served. Finally the waiter arrived and took our drink orders. Not alcohol and our meal orders. The drinks arrived but then we waited for our meals..25 minutes and the only meals to be prepared. What happened was the two parties who had reserved some of the tables arrived and all the staff focussed on them and totally forgot about us. Obviously it was because they were ordering alcohol beverages. Then we had to hunt someone down for our bill and were told it would be a minute. We will never go back. Poor service and the food was just ok. I wouldn't recommend. Don't waste your time or money. Oh and the only way I could post this was to give a rating. I don't feel the staff or restaurant or food deserve 1 star
Great food and service
Perfect fresh seafood in nice and customer-focussed atmosphère
Great, friendly service, and an atmosphere that adds class and charm to any gathering.
First stop for a family trip of 11 people. They accommodated us extremely well and it was very family friendly. They do have a kids menu! Food wasn't quick, but it sure was tasty. My fish tacos were great and are still a stand out of the trip.
Delicious! Great patio and meals. Would recommend. We also have a nut allergy and they made us nut free desserts - what a treat!
Really good tacos :)
Fish was good but the batter was too thick and under cooked. Good beer selection
Always great service, fresh food, comfortable atmosphere, and good music. Patios are gorgeous, but inside on a rainy day is just as nice. They'll happily do substitutions (I learned today as I substituted out tuna and replaced with chicken), and have vegetarian and gluten-free options. Great for a group too - lots of menu variety.
This restaurant is very busy, we waited over two hours for a table on a regular Monday evening. The portion size is small but delicious.
I always make a point to have at least several meals here when I am in PEI. The food is outstanding
It's a lovely place to hangout with friends...loved the fish tacos ????
Fantastic meal, Had the seared scallops, perfection. Food was hot hot and well presented. Highly recommend this restaurant
From the atmosphere to the food, I absolutely love coming here and "next door". Hands down one of my favorite restaurants on the island.
Meal type
Excellent service and fantastic food! Thanks for making our day great!
I had the fish and chips with their homemade tartar sauce which was awesome! Well definitely order that again!!!!
super slow to get drinks/food but the food and atmosphere was really good
Really good food and reasonably priced considering the location. Mussels are awesome, both Curry and garlic style. Chowder and the Italian style cioppino soup were amazing. The Cesar drink (bloody Mary) was the best mixed drink on the island. Also the salmon board is a must try. Friendly service
The fish in the fish &chips was suboptimal tasted like an old fish and was dry. The chips were good the slaw was tasty. The batter was tasty. The seafood chowder was very tasty not alot of Substance..
Wide selection of gluten free options. I noticed they had a dairy free menu too!
Food was good as was the service. Decor a little dark though
My husband and I traveled to PEI from Toronto and this was one of the first restaurants we went to. There was a line up and it was crowded but the food was great and we would go back if we returned to Charlotte Town. (I ordered the tacos and really enjoyed them!)
Great restaurant. Lobster roll and haddock tacos were delicious. Staff was very friendly!
Great food and great service! We saved by visiting during the Dine & Save promotion. Everything is fairly priced even without the promotion. All of the food was delicious. I got the Island Burger and we also got chips and dip for an appetizer!????
Incredible seafood chowder! Very confortable place to have a drink as well. Nearby all major hotels.
Awesome serving size! Great food
Apps were served quickly but it was a really long wait for mains. Drinks refills ordered and never received. Tomato and red pepper soup tasted like marina sauce. Lobster was rubbery and steak (ordered medium rare) came well done. Fish and chips were good, salmon bagel was good, as was seafood paparadelle. Overall, a mediocre experience when we were hoping for an amazing seafood meal for our last night in PEI.
The burgers are first rate, the waitresses are the hottest iv ever seen, the place is relaxing, but I learned this place has several employees working 12 hours days and multiple jobs. I can't come back with a clean conscience. That is outrageous.
