This is the definition of a hidden gem. The service was excellent and the food even better. We were in Burnaby for about a week and a half, and it was the best restaurant we had on our stay. We tried the Tenen platter for one with a roasted pepper salad and that was more than enough food for two people. If you are in the area this is a must stop!

So I'm glad I tried out the food which was overall pretty good. The portions are large and the slaw which looks really basic was actually really good. If it wasn't for the fact that the restaurant has ash trays in their ample outside back area (and front) and allowed smoking I would have given it a higher rating. Personally I can't stand smoking and this really turned me off. So if your interested in giving the food a try I recommend seating inside the restaurant.

BIG portions. Meatlover's paradise! I love this place. Came here after work for dinner and ordered the Tenen Meat Sampler not knowing what to get. The serving was huge! Just look at the photo. The plate dwarves the coke can easily! But I wouldn't be giving this a five star review just for the portion! The food is delicious! The meats had a very unique smokey, peppery taste that was very satisfying and comforting to eat. The sides are perfect pairings and helped enhance the main stars of the show. I especially enjoyed the sour cream-like (kaymak?) side. Definitely will be coming back!

No doubt the best representation of South - Central European food. It is somewhat type of "fusion" with what average North American would appreciate, but finally less compromising. So... Yes! It can be called authentic food destination.. But, I have no doubt that you can take any of your business partners there to impress them... It is different, and it should stay different. This restaurant went through several dramatic menue changes, and I believe they are at good spot right now. I sincerely hope they will keep providing authentic pallet, and not try to compromise in future. I also hope that thay will stay consistent. Prices of some items are getting somewhat less competitive lately.

DELICIOUS FOOD! My friend and I were in the neighbourhood and stumbled upon this place. What an amazing find! The restaurant is homey and cute, and the staff were so welcoming and friendly. They explained their dishes so clearly and even offered samples! Great place!

First time here. The service was excellent and the food was wonderful. Had a Serbian version of Greek salad that was very nice, the meat platter for one was excellent. The Karadjordjeva Schnitzel was absolutely outstanding. Portions are very generous, we will be returning.

Ordered the grill dish that has lots of meat but unfortunately they told me the grill isn't working and it will take 30 minutes to get a replacement. Ordered the yogurt sauce lamb dish. Pretty decent size piece of lamb, the yogurt sauce was really tasty. I enjoyed the dish. Will go back again.

They had really great selection of all types of Eastern European cuisine from salads to pastas and meats. The portions are large and the food is delicious! The service was phenomenal! My friend had the grilled chicken and I had the mixed barbecue platter. We will definitely return to this hidden gem of a restaurant! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I have nothing to say something bad about the food. the staff are friendly BUT if you are not smokers you hate this place. I don't see any people smoking inside the restaurant but you can really smell it. I had a bad headache when i got home. The food is great.

A hard to find little gem hidden away at Rumble and Royal Oak, but absolutely worth searching for. It looks like your Eastern European grandpa's basement suite / rumpus room in there (and TBH, smells a little musty like it too) but that just adds to the charm. We had the chevapi (Serbian sausages on this wonderful buttery bread, but then on top of fries!) and the baked beans with smoked pork and sausage. The coleslaw was delicious - a wonderful oil and vinegar style that was fresh and tasty and hit the spot against such a heavy carby main. Will absolutely be back - and you should go too.

The most delicious food we've tasted in a long time. The cabbage rolls were unbelievably amazing, closest to my mom's homemade ones (she's from Poland), the lamb with yogurt sauce incredible, so tender it melts in your mouth and my boyfriend had the cheese schnitzel which is the best he's ever had (even compared to a few German restaurants we've tried). The prices were very reasonable. Definitely recommend and will be telling people about this gem. So extremely satisfied. Awesome friendly service too.

If you are looking for an homestyle Serbian comfort food, this is the place to go. Their patio was amazing and accommodating even a large group. Meat platter was massive with juicy and tender meat, schnitzel was crispy and the cream sauce inside incorporated really well with crispy outsides. Would go again!

It was my first time eating at an Eastern European food. It's a small place at a somewhat of a random place. The outside looks a bit casual, but the interior was decorated well with good vibe. The portion was really big for a reasonable price, but the food was a bit too salty in general for my taste buds. Overall, I enjoyed the dine out restaurant experience here :)

Have you ever been to a restaurant that you have instantly developed an emotional connection to? A place that you will CONSTANTLY recommend and bring up in food debates against your friends. Bro. I’m only 24, but I can so easily state that Tenen is THE best barbecue place I have ever eaten at. Or probably will ever eat at. No other bbq restaurant has injected flavour like this into they’re meat. When you see an older “grandma” figure poking around in the back kitchen, you know with out a doubt you are in good hands. The barbecue meat platter for one, is actually more than enough for two. All the meat is smoked to the point that you slam your fist on the table with every bite man. Just a great, homey feel and everything about this place is inviting. Tenen is the definition of a family love for food that shows. 10/10 would smash.

It's been a long time since I went to Tenen and surprisingly the pricing hasn't changed much. They have shown up frequently on Groupon, however, and with their clever pricing, the $20-towards-lunch adds up to either a cheap yet huge-portioned lunch for one person, or approximately a half-priced lunch for two persons. They do have nearly-$20 main dishes so going solo with the groupon is fine (and it's one groupon per table) but most items are $16.95. Overall the food is comfort homestyle food. Actually on the mediocre side except the portion per plate is probably good enough for up to two persons depending on what you get and your appetite. Tenen does feed you well and isn't skimpy on portions. Even though they have the usual fillers of bread and potatoes, they aren't stingy with the meat. Gourmet Burger ($16.95) 10 oz. patty with bacon and cheese mixed in -Looks like the bread used is a pita sliced in half and pan fried in drippings from the burger. -The seared-on-the-outside patty itself is really heavy and filling, but it's also really kind of rubbery-firm from maybe having ground the meat too finely. It has the feel of an overdone burger patty. -The burger has some cheese, bacon, and chili mixed in for a slight bit of bite to the flavour. -The plate has fries, coleslaw, and a scoop of rich chili-flavoured spreading cheese which you can certainly slather inside the burger. The patty is big enough for this burger to count as two regular burgers that might each cost you $10-$12 elsewhere. It's a very plain burger (bread and patty) but the plate is not skimpy on portions even if you discount the complimentary thick pita that comes to the table. Cabbage Rolls (16.95) seasoned ground beef and pork with rice, stuffed in sauerkraut leaves, served with mashed potato -Looks like a small portion at just two rolls, but the amount of rice in the filling is token, so you're getting basically two burgers worth of meat here. If you're still not feeling full enough you can work in the pita bread that comes to the table. -Overall tasted fine, nothing superlative here. The slight sourness of the sauerkraut really helps with how filling this plate is. OK food with bonus points for generous portions -- something that is steadily harder to find nowadays, especially with newer restaurants.

It definitely a hidden gem in the community. Located in a tiny open mall with very limited parking. Nothing special from outside, but it's an other world once you get inside. A cozy restaurant with very unique and historic decorations! Eastern European foods are delicious. Portion is big. I've ordered an Adriatic style boneless fish, my husband has ordered a meat platter and a soup. The meat platter which for one person is definitely more than enough for both of us! Soup is loaded with meat. No room to try their desserts, will try next time.

This place is for the meat lovers. Really. But, no matter what you order, it tastes great and will fill even the largest human being. There might be some pause before plates land on the table, just bear with it with some drinks. The wait will pay off. The place itself is on smaller size and packed in the evenings, I guess for the good reason(s). Which is food and the Eastern European late XX-century ambience. You can even catch live music on Saturday night. Prices are above average, but there no buyer's remorse - it is so worth it. Definitely try the Serbian beer (Lav) to make your meal complete. Enjoy your night at Tenen Restaurant!

This is the best restaurant I’ve experienced in a while. I ordered the lamb soup AMAZING! With every bite I could feel the nutrients Replenish my body. Then came the entrées, cabbage rolls ! Done perfectly. No need to add anything it’s flavours were hitting my taste buds like a train. Then roast lamb and mashed potatoes, amazing that’s all I can say! Thank you for the extra bread rolls and the huge portions at reasonable prices. This is now my new favourite restaurant. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Everything about this place is fantastic. Attentive wait staff, atmosphere is beautiful and cozy with live music ( not loud however, its fairly relaxed). The food is really the highlight of this place, as it is expertly prepared and plated to look beautiful. The dishes were unique and had a very traditional preparation. Pre-frozen vegetables, the salmon isn't from BC it's frozen Atlantic or farmed and overcooked. Small portions, poorly packaged. The lamb was no better. "Subway would have been better than this" is what the person next to me said just now. If I paid $11 instead of $22 per meal this would be fine but for the price this is just insulting. I'm not sure if the menu for skip the dishes is just different but for being so highly rated this has been disappointing.

+1 for the service alone! Warmly treated by the owner, service was excellent. The food was great, the sandwich delicious, though the fries were a little too salty. The meat platter was awesome and filling! The interior of this Serbian restaurant is great, walls are all adorned with pictures, painting and other eastern european nick-nacks. They even carry rakia, a selection of fruit Brandy.

We dropped in last minute, no reservation on a Friday night. The restaurant was extremely busy. They got us a table within 10 minutes. The first time for 3 out of 4 of us. Tasty hole-in-the-wall. Eastern European food in a small location with cosy ambience and a wonderful selection of foods. My friends and I had the lamb, chicken roulade, goulash, trout, and cabbage rolls. Meat was tender and filling, the portion sizes were well fitted to $15 to $20 an entree. Waitress was friendly and food came pretty fast. I found my cabbage rolls too salty but my friends liked it. Favourite was the lamb, goulash and roulade. Will definitely go again to try their other dishes.

I watched him multiple time brush his beard with his hands and then touch food he was preparing. It was disturbing. I hope management does not ignore this issue. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME GOING ANYWHERE ELSE. THIS IS THE PLACE YOU WANT TO HAVE DINNER TONIGHT. The restaurant is nice and cozy. The staff are genuine and friendly. THE FOOD was so GOOD. This was easily the best cevapi I've had in as long as I can remember. The spice mix for the meat was so flavorful and the bread was a shining example of crispy perfection. Another great point is the included sides were also fantastic. The slaw was light and fresh and even the French fries were cooked in clean fresh oil. Looking at their menu, I can tell I will be back to try more. But of course my first time at a Yugo restaurant.. I had to order the cevapi and I'm happy I did.

No idea what happened, but just today someone I know said the same thing, so the word is out. I hope they sort it out fast.

Food isn't awful, but very oversalted. Still a terrible addition to the local neighborhood. The restaurant often hosts parties anywhere from 3 pm to 3 am, with live amateur performances and extremely loud speakers. Just last night cars were coming and going until the early morning, with drunk men spilling out from the restaurant into the public parking lot, screaming their lungs out. To top it off, they also seem to host a "daycare" in their back area, complimentary with screaming kids, just to ensure they're still disturbing their neighbors in the morning and early afternoon hours. I'm quite some houses away so I can only imagine what their next door neighbors have to listen to. If events continue this way with loud late-night partying and occupation of public areas, law enforcement will be called very quickly.

I went to Tenen for the first time tonight, and had an amazing experience. The owner takes pride in his restaurant, and the food was delicious and portions very generous. The artwork on the walls was so interesting, and one picture in particular that the owner received as a gift from an elderly gentleman is beautiful. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for the food, the experience, and to support a genuinely nice entrepreneur who so clearly prides himself on his business.

Problematic part I see in the fact, that group of four people didn't exist for a server. Over all that time I drank only one beer and hadn't seen the server to get the new one. I was here for a family dinner last night, and it was a unique experience for all of us. None of us ever tried Slavic food, but I've only tried Russian dish few times. My family and I came here around 6:40, and the tables were full of customers waiting for their food. We were kind of annoyed that food took around 40 minutes or longer to come. Regardless of the wait times, it was so worth waiting though. Somehow we didn't even get bread until we almost finished eating. We had Meat Platter (2people $38.95), Carbonara ($16.95) and Zlatiborski Goulash ($17.95) and they were all yummy. When it comes to Meat Platter, it was so big that none of us could finish it. Pork chops, chicken and sausage were fresh and tasty. It was interesting how this dish came with plain and red pepper butter. I personally think it was good enough without butter; and the butter was home made and tasty. Carbonara was perfect. Pasta was nicely cooked, and it was tasty. Goulash had big chunks of meat and some veggies along with rice and mashed potatoes. Goulash was SO good. Home made breads were VERY impressive as well. Service was attentive and friendly. We noticed the owner interacting to our next table, and some customers were Russians and Serbians. Because some customers were Russians and Serbians this restaurant knows how to cook Eastern European food well. Just that I felt very thirsty after eating and had to drink so much water. I better go back to try either Schntzel, Roulade or Cabbage Rolls someday. It was an awesome experience trying Serbian food.

We went there on a Saturday evening, and it was busy! So making a reservation beforehand is recommended. This is not a place to have a quiet talk with someone as it was somewhat loud, but the food was excellent. We had the beef tripe soup. It was tomato based with a kick, but the spices was not overpowering so you could still taste the tripe. We ordered the karadjirdjeva schnitzel, which was a rolled up thin pork steak stuffed with kaymak cheese, and deep fried. The cheese was gooey and runny on the inside. The outside was nice and crunchy. It is a little rich because of the cheese, so it is worth splitting with a friend. We tried the smoked pork neck, and it was flavourful. It came with a roasted pepper dip which added a nice flavour to the meat. In the end, with 3 people sharing the dishes, it cost about $22 per person.

Discovered this off a Groupon. Very reasonable pricing, and tasty food. Very filling. Small cozy dining area, with one waitress working her hardest to serve everybody and does so with a smile on her face! Very knowledgeable about the menu and helpful. Drinks are quite cheap. There is some parking on site and also in nearby streets. Very close to the skytrain, easily accessible. They accept cash, debit or credit payments.

Super great spot! The place looks very unassuming from the front entrance, the dining room is lovely and cozy, but the real gem is the back patio! Big and open, you feel carried to somewhere new. Our server Marija (?) was lovely and funny, and very helpful when ordering. We had insane amounts of delicious food, (great value-price level) and had enough leftover for another meal. Highly recommend, we will be back!

This place is a hidden gem! A family business serving serbian cuisine. Don't be fooled by the outside look and make sure to ask to be seated in the patio as they have a lovely patio in the back. The only drawback is that customers can smoke here and it is so annoying.

The service was good in the beginning, but it became really slow after. What a hidden gem! I was hungry after apartment hunting. Thought of going to Metrotown but decided to give this place a try. I'm glad I did! The place is small but warm and comfortable. A Serbian couple runs it. It's probably the only one of its kind in Vancouver. You get all the usual Balkan food plus Lav beer, and eight flavours of Rakija! Very cool. Typical menu dishes are Goulash, Fasulhe etc. Be prepared for a longer wait than usual because they prepare everything fresh. Unlike other places where the basic stuff is ready and they just have to mix it. Kill the time with a Lav or Rakija. The chicken soup was wholesome and nutritious. I loved the interiors, they have old photos, dresses, and vinyl records from golden times of Yugoslavia! However I thought they can employ atleast one wait staff as right now only the owner is managing the whole place and she could definitely need some help! I liked her service and she is friendly. Will recommend and visit again! A slice of Balkans in the PNW! If you still haven't checked off your bucket list this is the closes you'll get!

Chicken breast wrapped in bacon and stuffed with cheese. This place is absolutely amazing. The food is cooked with skill and love. The portions are huge. The atmosphere is amazing. Me and my wife have ordered from there at least 10 times, and once the potatoes were slightly over cooked. Whether you want a coffee and a sandwich, or a beer and a meal, this easily one of the best European restaurants in the tri-city area.

Wow. This place was an experience. It’s obvious that this place is around because of the passion of sharing Serbian food and not just the money. It took quite some time to receive our food but it was understandable after eating the food - it tasted like it was made with so much respect and prudence! The goulash was incredible, rich sauce enveloping the melt in your mouth tender pieces of pork. The rice paired with the goulash was a bit undercooked however. The karadjordjeva schnitzel was unbelievable. This is a must try at least once in your life. After cutting into it, cheese flowed out like lava! Everyone at the table was staring at this dish in amazement. The place feels so homey and warm, and is decorated with unique trinkets and pieces which all seem to have a story. Even the washrooms were decorated so well! They have a cute patio in the back which feels like you’re in your friends backyard.

Authentic Eastern Europe cuisine with a menu of wide choices. The place is local with friendly staff. Internal decore is mesmerizing. Sitting in the place is a time travel to Eastern Europe in 1900, almost. Sewing machine, tapestry, wall plate, gray-scale photos, rugs, and all made me feel great. Food was very good, a little bit greasy which I assume is part of the cuisine. Oh and there is a patio to throw a party of ~30 guests!

I love the food but not the service. My favorite is the Bruschetta. It has an interesting sweetness that is like a touch of buttercup candy and a mixture of fresh flavors that make it delicious. A true hidden gem in Vancouver serving some of the best food in town. My wife and I had a strong craving for cevapi and were so so glad we found Tenen. Their cevapi were perfectly juicy morsels of grilled umami flavour, and went perfectly with their buttery lepinja bread. Such pure and utter deliciousness that will cure all your emotional woes. The nicely acidic and refreshing cabbage salad on the side makes you want to keep eating more and more too. We also had the Karadjordjeva schnitzel and my goodness it was crispy (and not greasy), with delicious pork rolled inside and oozing with kaymak cheese filling. It was rich, yet light on the palate, and a mandatory eat. You can tell every dish is prepared with love. Definitely recommend!!

It was a great experience. Apart from the delicious food and dessert, I found the attention to details outstanding regarding the lighting, sound, presentation of the food, and the creative decorations that told stories of the balkan countries. The restaurant is run by a very nice couple. They were so kind they treated us with a free packed dessert when they found out that we wanted to order dessert but we had to leave earlier.

I hadn't had Eastern Europen food before and was blown away by the palette of flavors from the lamb soup (very savory and comforting) to the flavor of the Cevapi (serbian sausages) and version of coleslaw (super thin slices and mild flavor). Placed in a small little strip-mall (seems like Burnaby has many of these) many of the patrons spoke in a language I had not heard before and seemed like regulars. Everybody was warm to us visting gringos from south of the border. Definitely in the top 2 or 3 meals I've had in 2018. Thanks Tenen!

I love their old and antique collection on the walls and furniture. It is friendly, lively and beautiful Serbian restaurant that basically serves almost all eastern European cuisine. Thanks to Open Table, we found this quaint neighbourhood gem. Quality food and great service, especially when ones comes in with a pre-existing burn that required attention. Miss going on vacation during Covid-19 times? Check out Tenen. The atmosphere of this place (i.e. music, decor, clientele) will make you feel like you traveled to some Eastern European country. Apricot rakija: Tong Tong says it is similar to brandy with a hint of sweetness??? I think it tastes like any other liquor, there's no apricot or sweet aftertaste (I ain't a drinker though ????). Pork Shoulder Goulash: tasty and they don't skimp out on the meat. Make sure to soak up the stew with the complimentary bread! Chicken Roulade: not bad for a cordon bleu wrapped with ba-ba-bacon! Bacon was crispy. The chicken underneath didn't taste greasy at all. This dish is on the drier side because they use chicken breast but the melted cheese spinach filling compensated for the dryness. Tong tong: I'll be back.

Tenen is a super relaxed, quality restaurant. The first time I visited, even on a holiday, the food was ready quickly. Everything was flavourful and served in perfect proportions. Most people took some good home. I can recommend the Leskovachki Ushtipci, a tiny bit spicy, with lots of meat and potatoes. The second visit I had Adriatic style trout, a whole side of fish with lots of rice, olives, and other veggies. It's great to see a lot of the owner's friends coming in as well, and it adds to the familiar atmosphere!

The food tastes great. However, the service leaves a lot to be desired. In particular, the restaurant's refusal to honor a Groupon voucher for take out. On Groupon, each voucher has a section called "Things You Should Know", where the terms and conditions of a voucher are listed. This typically includes how many vouchers can be purchased, how many vouchers can be used at a time, the frequency of repurchases, and etc. Normally, if a restaurant only allows the voucher to be used for the dine-in option, it is listed under this section. I called for take out and upon arriving and attempting to pay with the voucher and a credit card (because my order exceeded the voucher value), the server said that the voucher cannot be used. This was not stated on the Groupon voucher at all and I showed the server a voucher for another restaurant where the "Valid for dine-in only" was explicitly stated. The server replied that ordering take out constitutes as a special "promotion/offer" and that makes the voucher invalid for use. Faced with this, my only option was to pay for the food. The food tastes pretty good, especially the cabbage roll (yums) and I purchase Groupon vouchers to try out new restaurants, however, I am disappointed with this restaurant's refusal to honor its own terms and conditions and will not be returning.

Got take out dinner from here since my place is near. I always wanted to see what's with this place because their decor is good. Night time, I got scared because there were men sitting outside the door. Not sure if they are the owner but that's just my honest take on it. It would be good if it was the owners and not just the usual costumers who hassle other customers or pickup girls. Girl at the bar as my cashier wasn't really interested in serving me. It's the first time I didn't feel welcome at all in a restaurant so -1 ????. Inside is very unique. At night it's really dark like a pub. So maybe that's the feel they are going for. The kitchen has bright lights and so does the washroom. The washrooms are very clean and they even have reading materials! Very unique decor everywhere. Food. I got pasta so I was expecting something like Anton's or something of what I'm familiar with. But for me it was oily and bland. Not sure if that was how it was supposed to be. Paid a lot but it had a small serving. Compared to Anton the money I paid would have given me 2x meals for left overs. So it wasn't filling as I had hoped for. so -1 ????. I will try to order something from here again or bring someone with me. For now, I will stick to Quick Bite until I have the courage to come back here.
