This Restaurant belongs to the category of Southern restaurant (US).
Having lived south of the 49th for a good portion of my life I was amazed to have found a true southern restaurant just outside of Saskatoon. Having had home cooked southern food, my first visit snapped me back to 20 years ago to my family friends dinner table with hot hush puppies and catfish. The smells and flavours that come out of the kitchen is nothing less than bayou heaven. You will not be disappointed.
Back for a second visit. Thanks again Chef for a great meal. The fried catfish was great and the cheesecake was a huge success. The sweet tea perfect. Won't fined better food and service anywhere. Great service and the food was unbelievable. Will definitely go back every chance I get
Great place ... will be returning ... big tasty servings
My husband and I drove an hour to eat here for our anniversary. It was hands down the best authentic Southern cuisine we have ever had. Well worth the drive to Dalmeny, very reasonably priced, and AMAZING food. We will definitely be returning.
Delicious food! Great service! I will be back!
Food was fresh and tasty. The French fries were a nice fresh touch - they taste like home made. Haven't had gator sice I last ate in Houston almost a decade ago, so this was a nice surprise to find in rural Saskatchewan. For the price you pay, though, you'd think you'd get better quality bread for the po boys.
Perfect dinner after a short hike at River Ridge. We ordered the coconut shrimp, cheese dip and beer battered fries, and chicken and sausage gumbo to go. The southern sweet tea drink wasn't sweet at all. Everything else was good! The coconut shrimp will bring us back. We'll be back to dine in!
Frog legs were okay but the fries, coconut shrimp and hush puppies were amazing. My son loved the alligator. Portions are huge. Would love to go back if/when they have a crawfish feast available.
Awesome food and service
Super friendly service although a little slow at times!! The French onion soup is WAY too salty, and I love salty. It also was cold when I got it and cheese wasn’t melted which I was sad about. Although, my boyfriend was impressed with his appetizer he received I just forget what he ordered! Will continue to come and try other menu items!
An awesome experience. Amazing food. Highly recommended
Dine in
Glorious!! Is the word from my wife. Amazing food, highly recommend the PoBoys, but bring your appetite!!! My new favorite place to eat. Licensed and excellent company.
Great creole food. Friendly, quaint restaurant. Owner will make GF meals for you.
Southern Roots is absolutely amazing! The food is extremely well prepared and tastes delicious. I am a typical prairie boy when it comes to my food palate but Southern Roots authentic creole cuisine fits right in. Not too spicy and full of flavour!
First time going was amazing we had the fried alligator and frog legs with fries and onion rings food was top notch service and staff was awesome definitely go back to try more menu items ????????
We were less than impressed with both food , service and pricing. The waitress didn’t know the prices of market items. Returned an uncooked potato and received a cooked one after we paid the bill ! Ended up leaving it after waiting too long for a take out container.
The price for the food here is higher than a standard restaurant, but that's because the food is very much in a different tier than your standard restaurant. The blackened Catfish was crispy where you wanted it and soft where it was needed. The flavor was excellent and I don't think I've had better prepared Catfish, even after spending a good amount of time in Louisiana myself. My wife had the Chicken and Sausage Gumbo and it was packed with savory meat and the spices complimented the broth and meat perfectly. Very filling and very delicious. Our appetizers were gator bites and froglegs, as my wife had never had either. We were very satisfied with the frog legs, but we're quite surprised at how good the gator bites were. The sauce paired with them was good enough I may have taken the small disposable container of it home. Sadly we were too full for Dessert immediately so we instead ordered some Chocolate Cobbler with ice creme for the door. Can't wait for that!!! The staff are very good at their jobs as well. The waitress was very welcoming and warm even though we obviously were out of towners. The cooks, well spoke through their food and deserve all the praise I can give them. Drove 40 minutes out from Saskatoon to eat there and will likely do so again soon!
This place is incredible, service is so genuine with generous portions and genuine cuisine
Fantastic food..... huge portions ???? ....my 16 year old even noticed how passionate Karl is on the foods he’s prepared. Worth the drive for anyone but love we get to have this ???? in our back yard.
Amazing good, great service . 100% worth the drive
Felt welcome as soon as you walk in. Very helpful with food allergies. Everything fresh made, so can improvise. Wine and beer. No hard liquor, yet!! Chef was friendly and Miss Charity and staff were super friendly. Go there. Enjoy!!
The food is amazing. It's an awesome home cooked meal every time. The atmosphere is so much fun and Karl and Charity are the sweetest people ever. And don't forget to take a selfie with Alphonse!
Fricking awesome. First time out. Will definitely be out again. Well worth the 20 drive.
Second time at this place, first time I get they we’re just opening but it took 2 hours for Our food and you could hear the cook yelling at the poor server who was doing a great job. We decided to try it again cause we love Cajun food but again disappointing to hear from this new person that they replaced the nice server who went above and beyond to keep us happy our last visit with someone who isn’t very friendly, barely checked on us as we waited too long again and our food was cold. Will not be going back- a small place like that hearing a cook yell at staff and not Treating them right is no place we like to frequent especially when we see someone working hard, we really went back cause we at least knew we’d be getting too notch service with a smile needed in a place like that. #disapointing
An absolutely delicious experience with amazing service. Frog legs were amazing, onion rings on point and the chicken fried steak was an absolute behemoth. Will be back to specifically try the Po Boy!
I've been here a couple times by now. It's a smaller place so when it's busy it can seem loud. Food was excellent, with large portions. Even though it can take a while for food to come out, you can definitely tell it's all house-made with passion and love by Chef Karl! Our party had the boudin balls, blackened catfish, top it off salad with chicken, butcher boy burger, and fried frog legs. Super filling and fantastic flavors. Chef Karl went above and beyond for us. As we were celebrating a couple of birthdays, I asked before I made the reservation for a special order of dessert - apple pie. Chef Karl delivered and the result was one of the best apple pies I've ever had in my life, and we had plenty leftover to take home. Will definitely be coming back.
If you love Southern food.... This place is definitely worth the drive. Better to
Amazing food, good drinks, friendly staff. I will make the trip back.
Great local restaurant with so many creative options! Not something you see often in Saskatchewan, the food was delicious
Great food, and HEALTHY portions. Love the staff and love the homey vibe. Worth the drive if you wanna get fed good!
Had a chance to try Southern Roots for the first time today. YUM! Chicken fried steak, garlic mashed potatoes, white gravy and corn on the cob. Can't wait to try something else on the menu. Good, homestyle eating. ????????
Stopped in for the first time for a quick breakfast and couldn’t have been more impressed! First off the decor and vibe is super cool- a unique mix of rustic vintage with reclaimed items and Louisiana memorabilia and art adorning the walls. They serve a local, delicious, high quality coffee- Rampage Coffee Co. (They also retail it there!). I had the biscuit breakfast sandwich and can it’s probably the best I’ve ever had. The in-house made sausage patty was thick, juicy and seasoned to perfection and stacked with a perfectly cooked egg and gooey cheese on an in-house made homestyle biscuit. It was hot, fresh, filling and hit all the taste buds. Staff was friendly and personable and they seem to really take pride in the quality of food they provide. Will be back for more soon and can’t wait to try the supper menu. I’m a local and happy to have this little gem here in Dalmeny, so to you out of towners- it’s worth the trek out! Keep up the awesome work guys!
Dinner
I am hesitant to give this place a rave because I am scared that more people will find it and then it will be too busy to eat there. The BEST cajun food ever, amazing service, incredible staff. I went for lunch and wanted to stay forever.
A must visit restaurant for an authentic feeling, and delicious southern meal! We were very impressed and pleased with our meal at Southern Roots. Delicate hush puppies started the meal off, as well as a platter of very fresh oysters. Our entire group was so pleased and excited about our meal we were talking for days after. We were especially impressed by the blackened catfish, coconut shrimp and mac N cheese. Top notch food, in a cute little town just a short, and worth while drive from Saskatoon. Can’t wait to go back for a gigantic Po Boy.
Just wanted to say that we had a wonderful experience tonight, I had the Shrimp Po Boy, it was amazing, huge portions, I will definitely be back again soon. It was well worth the drive.
It has taken me too long to try but it did not disappoint
Awesome! Food is the best! The catfish po-boy sandwich is my favorite. The portions are a lot and I like that gives me a treat to bring to work for my lunch break makes work more bearable knowing that I got a awesome meal waiting for me.And that home made Southern Tea complete the meal.People you got to try it, bring your date or your family and enjoy the atmosphere and great food. It's a five star restaurant.
Food was amazing had 2 entrées, the frog legs and chicken jambalaya. Finished off my meal with a chocolate cobbler.
A small place that fits around 20 but I doubt you will be disappointed. The staff are caring and the cooks will come put to greet you if you have allergies you need to speak of. My first taste of Southern food and I was not disappointed with the gumbo or the hush puppies. Will be back soon enough!
Heard great things about this place but was disappointed. Our server was improperly wearing her mask, and the cook who delivered our meals to the table didn’t even bother to wear one. Their menu looked delicious but they were out of everything I had my eye on...beverages, soup, po’boy bread. No desserts available either.
The service is always so friendly, and they are clearly so passionate about the food they serve! The food is absolutely delicious!
Great food & friends, well worth the drive. Alligator bites & then the Blacked Catfish, delish.
Very neat vibe. Friendly staff and the owner/chef came out to say hi. Food is so so. Maybe I don’t love Cajun ????♂️. Lots of deep fired and the batter didn’t have a lot of flavour. Good serving size and interesting menu.
Southern Roots was truly a wonderful experience, the food was beyond amazing and the owners Charity and Karl were awesome hosts and showcased their food very well. the interior dining area was beautiful and well thought out. definitely will be back to try the rest of the menu!!
Really good food. The building doesn't look like much bit the food more than makes up for it. A great addition to Prarie dinning options
I had the shrimp po boy and it was great! The shrimp were big, was still crunchy and not over cooked! The sandwich itself was made really well - not overloaded with sauce that it’s messy, fresh veggies and good bread. It reminded me of eating a Po boy by a river landing in NOLA. Worth the drive to Dalmeny for some southern Cajun cuisine!
Amazing food that will fill you up! The menu was easy to read and gave good descriptions of the dishes.
AWESOME, soooo looking forward to go back.
The food is awesome!
I was suuuper impressed with the meal I had today! Everything was so delicious. The homemade bun and tender, juicy beef was absolutely delicious. So flavorful and such a huge portion! I'm hooked! :)
Dined at your restaurant with some friends, I had the catfish Po Boy sandwich and homemade fries, serving was huge, it was tasty and awesome! Loved the southern vibe in a great vintage building ! We'll be back to try your breakfast menu. Great addition for all you foodies to try out!
What a great destination restaurant with amazing food and amazing owners!
Amazing, unique food and friendly staff! Must try if you are in Saskatchewan!
Just went for the first time and I cannot stress enough how AMAZING it was! So authentic everything was cooked to perfection. Great portions and fair prices. The owners were so friendly and attentive. Cool atmosphere. Can't wait to go back and try the rest of the menu!
What a wonderful little place. Well worth the short drive to Dalmeny. The seasoning on the batter is to die for. We will definitely be going back again.
The food was incredibly delicious. The staff were so friendly and kind and checked up on us to see how the meal was, even when there was a full house and few staff. Definitely will be coming here again to try more dishes!
Onion rings are delicious. The other food we had wasn't very good and it was expensive. The owners were rude and unfriendly. We won't be back.
We were sooo disappointed with the food on Thursday night. I look at the menu beforehand and was excited to have crawfish etouffee. When I ordered it, I was told it was a special order that had to be order at least two days ahead of time. Nowhere on the menu does it say this. So I changed my order to the Shrimp Jambalaya. When the Shrimp Jambalaya came it was quite bland and the rice was very mushy. At the end of the meal we decided to try and pick up our spirits by ordering the Bread Pudding. Unfortunately, the pudding was so under cooked that it was almost running off the plate. It looked so bad that no chef could not have known there was an issue and it should have never been served. When I mentioned to the waitress that the bread pudding was very undercooked she said sorry, removed the plate as she walked by and that's the last we heard about it. It was still on the bill when we went to pay.
My family had a great meal here tonight. I really love the po' boys. I had the roast beef debris po' boy tonight and it did not disappoint. Nancy always has a friendly smile. The chef usually comes out to chat and make sure everything is going well. Their menu is quite unique with not everything being available every night but who cares because you just get to try something new then.
Absolutely awesome meal every time we have been here! Tonight we had a wonderful time and was treated to an amazing blueberry/peach/strawberry? cobbler! Looking forward to trying more items on the menu! Dalmeny is lucky to have you!
Great local place, decor is awesome but the real star is the home cooking, Chef Cantrelle knows his southern cuisine inside and out! Check it out you'll be back again forsure
Amazing food, and atmosphere.
Fabulous food, friendly service highly recommend
Service
Meal type
Have no doubts...EAT HERE!! Not only is this authentic Cajun food, it’s quality food. You will eat in a comfortable setting, and you will leave with a full belly. Not only that, but the prices are fantastic too. The Boss Man in the kitchen and the Boss Lady in the dinning room are genuinely nice folks too. Can’t say enough good things...take the risk, if you like good food, you will love it
What a great hidden gem! Super friendly people, very different cuisine compared to the rest in Saskatoon. HUGE portions one some but not all of the menu. Really enjoyed the evening and definitely worth the trip out from Saskatoon! #supportlocal ????
We drove up from Moose Jaw and it was sooooo worth the drive! The food was incredible and the atmosphere was amazing!! The owners were very attentive to the notes I had put in my reservation about my sisters birthday and how far we had traveled. I will definitely be back and recommend to anyone that wants a fantastic Creole experience!!
Food was great . Chef and staff very friendly .... love the ambience
Drove an hour to check this place out after hearing many good things and they did not disappoint! Delicious homestyle Cajun Cuisine, made fresh to order. Very friendly service and top notch chef. Can't wait to go back and try more menu items, reasonably priced too!!
I made reservations months ago for my birthday and it was an amazing experience! I really recommend doing the trip from Saskatoon to try real cajun food! The food was amazing and the owners were checking on us and chatting. You need to try it!
This is the most legit Cajun food you will find in Saskatchewan, and possibly all of Canada. Chef cooks with love and passion making memorable food that will transport you to an entire other place. The Biscuts are like clouds, the Jumbaya is exquisite, and the service is personal. If you're going to Saskatoon, make the 30 minute drive to Delmany to eat this food.
Overall a very unique experience. We had some po boys and they were really great. Was quite interesting to have Alligator again after so many years. Would love to go back and try more of the menu for sure. Dine in by reservation only though right now so call ahead or go online.
Just ate here for the first time and it was fantastic! Will be back again for sure!
Amazing Service and Top Notch Delicious Food. I highly recommend their Alligator On A Stick! Sorry no photos, was to good to stop and take one.
Really great food, awesome owners!
Absolutely delicious food! The staff were very friendly and I felt like I was transported into the south!! And it was a very awesome and unique experience!
Amazing food and service. So much food. Ordered takeout for a small group. We all plan to go back. A little hard to get a hold by phone . Plan to pre order. We ordered via email a few days in advance. Added an extra meal last minute...chef Carl actually apologized to ME for the delay. But only after giving me a hard time about asking for extra hot sauce. Will definitely be back for the dine in experience. Highly recommend.
Interesting menu, friendly staff and loved the food
Yummy food, very pretty little restaurant, good vibes, good and friendly service. Fries were god-tier delicious. Will go again :)
Had a great meal here. Service was very friendly. Food was very flavourful. Chef came and visited. Excellent addition to the community and worth the drive from the city.
Food was amazing. Bit of a wait but definetly worth it.
This place is a hidden gem, the food is simply wow
My husband and I went for my birthday and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Friendly staff, cool atmosphere and the food has so much flavor, definitely a memorable birthday! Will be going back for sure...coconut shrimp appie is amazing!

Great food! Friendly owner/cook! Thanks for fab dinner last night! We will be back!
The food is awesome the service is awesome and the price is very awesome we'll definitely be returning and letting everyone else know about the food in the service
Great southern food. Just ask first if some foods are available before picking out your meal
The food is incredible. I mean incredible. A unique menu and prepared by a chef that is from New Orleans. Friendly and so passionate about the food. If you are looking for something unique and truly different than the norm in saskatoon and area - take the drive. It’s worth every mile !
SO GOOD!.. our family shared gator bites, hush puppies, coconut shrimp to start! All were amazing! I had the chicken fingers!.. BEST EVER!… the fresh battered everything is awesome!.. skinny fries and onion rings are delicious !!!….. GREAT VALUE !… we will be back!!!!!
avoid the jambalaya, i had in a mountain of rice,2 small dime sized chicken pieces, and 2 small slices of sausage. Drink menu is small, nothing on tap. Very slow service, decor is tacky and cheap. Save your money and your gas and go anywhere but here.
Absolutely amazing food! Phenomenal service. Excellent joint! 5 stars without a doubt 200%!
Best little gem just a short drive out of Saskatoon very friendly and large portions of the best flavors of everything. We will be going back for sure.
